Guest Reviews
- Julie (10/5): Perfect for solo travellers - highly recommend! - This was my first experience in a hostel and I am so glad I went to NBH. The place is so well equipped and Satoshi takes great care of everyone who is staying there. There were many recommendations on things to do and places to dine at! I felt so at home speaking to other travellers and it felt like Satoshi truly thought about everything to make sure you’re comfortable. The rooms were perfect and the beds were so comfy and clean. Bathrooms are very clean and the shared living space was so nice to sit and relax at. Bonus is that there is a free breakfast, Lawsons is literally a 10 second walk away and the train station connects you to everywhere. I loved staying here so much and I’ll definitely be coming back. N/a
- Kieran (9/5): Lovely owner, would stay again - Staff, information provided about locality and japan, access via trains (small walk, two options), communication prior to check in for times Small common space

- Teresita (10/5): Excellent Service -
- Xu (10/5): - Satoshi is an excellent host! I really enjoyed chatting and celebrating the new year with everyone.
- Dorien (10/5): A stellar dorm experience made possible by an outstanding host. - No Border Hostel (NBH) is now my favorite place to stay in Tokyo. You should absolutely consider a stay here!
The basics- the bed is comfortable, and there is a surprisingly decent amount of storage space around the bed for your belongings. Luggage can be stored underneath your bunk so access is easy, which is rare for dorm-style hotels like NBH. The shared bathroom and shower is always clean, as is the sink and kitchen area. The common area is cozy and I was very fortunate to have met and talked to some great people from all around the world who stayed at NBH at the same time. Wifi was also very fast for big downloads and streaming. The surrounding neighborhood is fairly quiet, and NBH is right next to a bus stop that can take you to a JR station in two stops, as well as multiple convenience stores right around the alley, so it's fairly convenient to get around and get what you need. The value for price per night is absolutely unmatched in the rest of Tokyo.
What makes NBH stand out though, is the host- Satoshi. I've never had a bad experience with hotel/lodging staff traveling in Japan. I've had good hosts, and a few great hosts, but I will never have a host like Satoshi (Ash) again. Satoshi is kind, approachable, and highly professional. He has an attentiveness and warmth that make him a pleasure to talk to, and I am grateful he went to out of his way to help and accommodate me personally before, during, and even after my stay. He is highly knowledgeable about traveling in Japan, so I recommend guests at NBH talk with him for destination ideas and advice. It's also clear he takes great care in maintaining NBH, which is clear throughout the facilities.
I hope to stay at NBH the next time I'm in Tokyo. I have nothing but praise, respect, and appreciation for Satoshi and I wish him all the best. I don't like that there is nothing to dislike about NBH.
- Kadan (10/5): -
- Fransiska Citra (9/5): Homey comfy place - Satoshi was very nice. You can tell that the place was carefully designed and thought for guests’ comfort.
The place provided free breakfast during my stay, simple but decent: cereals, bread, jams, milk. There were also free drinks (water, calpico water, and green tea, coffee/tea) and free ice cream. Nothing really. Place was not super super close to the station but still walking distance (~20 min to Gotenba station)
- Asif (10/5): - The host Satoshi has been very polite, helpful and resourceful. I had felt like a home comfort while there. Nothing
- Ikeda (10/5): -
- Guest (10/5): Cozy, quiet, clean, welcoming atmosphere — best hostel I've ever stayed in!! - The hostel was cozy and relaxing (only sleeps 8-10 people max), super clean, and lovingly well-stocked, thanks to the warm hospitality of Satoshi san the host. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were very quiet, with sound-proof doors. Free breakfast (and free ice cream) was wonderful too. There's only one sink, which is in the common area, making it a little awkward for foreign guests who aren't keen on brushing their teeth or washing their face in a shared space.

- Calvin (10/5): - Has everything you’d need. In a good quiet location basically 30min from anywhere in the city. Ash is an awesome host who is very knowledge and speaks perfect English which was very helpful. 10/10 recommend!
- Wing yee (10/5): - Satoshi San was a great friendly host. Everything was as described, clean and tidy, cozy space. Breakfast, tea & coffee, drinks & ice cream. Happy stay! -
- Sam (10/5): Stay here! - Proper hostel. Loved it - it is a walk from Gotanda but that means it’s a really nice and chill neighbourhood. Great when you need a break from the bustle of Tokyo. Satoshi does EVERYTHING to help you too - thanks again and see you next time! Nothing
- Vincent (10/5): -
- Igor (6/5): - Very convenient place in Tokyo, very helpful staff. Nice free breakfast!!!! I find it difficult to breathe in those cupboard like beds..
- liliana (10/5): Perfetto!
- TZU YEN (10/5): -
- Murtier (10/5): Fantastic ! - I really loved the welcome — the service was excellent, and our host was incredibly helpful and pleasant. He recommended all the best spots in the neighborhood, and they were all great suggestions. It’s easy to enjoy some quiet time in your room, but you can also seek out sociability and good vibes in the common area! I honestly don’t have a single negative point to mention!
- WEI-HONG (10/5): -
(Petit dej, glace, boisson)
Et l’hygiène au top Ras
- Luke (10/5): Cute and cosy hostel. Well maintained and staff are great. - Cute and cosy little hostel in Ebara. Very clean and comfortable. Shower and toilets are clean and well maintained. Cooking and laundry facilities available. Owner and staff are considerate and very helpful. Beds are cosy and private. Nothing
- María de la Paz Alejandra (10/5): - The hostel was comfortable and pleasant.
The owner Satoshi is very friendly and attentive. Everything ok.
- YURIKA (10/5): -
- Michal (10/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): Highly recommend - Location and peaceful place. Great host! Nothing
- Kei (10/5): The best hostel in Tokyo! - Amazing hostel, if not one of the best places you can stay in Tokyo. Extremely clean, comfortable, and has everything you need. On top of that, the staff and owner are super nice and always glad to help. The hostel is small, but there's no stairs, enough room for luggage, and it's cozy too. I had a long stay at this hostel and made some incredible friends while I was here! - Only one shower, but it was spotless and there was never a long wait for it
- It's in Shinagawa which isn't as close to the main tourist spots, but an easy 15 min walk to Gotanda/Osaki Station on the JR Yamanote Line, which are only 10-20 mins from Shibuya/Shinjuku. Great place for taking a break from busy areas.
- Sandra (10/5): I would stay again! - It is one of the cutest hostels I have stayed. The location is very good, easy to get around but quiet and the owner of the hostel is very friendly and kind, it was also clean and well taken care of.
- Julie (10/5): - Clean, cozy - great landing pad!
- ALARIC SMITH (10/5): Homely family run establishment - The host and family’s hospitality made for a homely atmosphere. The icing on the cake was complimentary ice cream! I’m sure I’ll not find near or far, soon. Thank you and best wishes
- Ole (8/5): -
- Diana (10/5): The best accommodation I've had so far - I enjoyed staying here, the staff was really friendly, the room was clean, the bed really comfy and I loved how the bunk beds were built! The distance was a bit too uncomfortable for me, just because it happened to rain and I couldn't find the accommodation fast. But that was just my bad luck, the place is definitely a 10 out of 10.
- Suzuna (10/5): -
- Emilia (10/5): Super - Super small, coazy hostel. The owner is sooo friendly and helpful. Buy food at the local market near ist so good. Also you get a small breakfast. It was perfect.
- Anju (10/5): This was the best first place to stay in Japan — a warm and hospitable welcome. Thank you so much! - Wonderful experience, such amazing host and such great facilities and comfortable beds Nothing - I would undoubtedly stay again.
- Hind (8/5): Amazing everything, location not so much - Santoshi was super nice, helped all the way. every time I had question or did know something he did his best to find a solution. the location was great for me, it was quite residential and everything was at least 30/40 away walking distance.
- Yuen (10/5): Functional design. - Staff very friendly and helpful. Nothing
- Lin (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely hostel and friendly hosts, the place is incredibly clean and safe. Would definitely stay here again
- Ngọc (10/5): Cozy and friendly! - No Borders Hostel was wonderful hostel ever. Everything was so clean, very convenience and the owner supper friendly. I really enjoyed there. Highly recommendation!
- Rachael (10/5): The perfect hostel - the small details made it feel like home. - This hostel had everything you want. Sathoshi has really thought of everything, the beds were private and very comfortable. This price was so reasonable, couldn’t recommend this hostel enough. Nothing
- Antonia (10/5): Amazing!! - Really great staff and hostel! Nothing
- Kit (10/5): Quiet and friendly hostel - Satoshi (the owner) and the other staff are lovely. Satoshi in particular was incredibly helpful taking the time out of his day to help me (and other guests) ship a lot of goods from the Japan back to Australia. The hostel is small and only has I think 10 beds. So it's nice if you enjoy a quiet and friendly atmosphere. The free breakfast foods are also very appreciated, espicially after a big night out.
- Henrique (10/5): Exceptional - One of the best hostels I've been, the owner (Ash) is very receptive and helpful, the living room is very comfy and clean. The location isn't the best, but not too bad.
- Natalia (10/5): I can recommend this lovely hostel to everyone. Excellent location and a lovely place to stay. Ash is super helpful and - Everything! Everything was great, I just wish my trip was longer :)
- Anais (10/5): AMAZING - It is cute and cozy. The staff are amazing!! It’s a bit far from any stations. But it is in the middle of a bunch of stations. So depending where you need to go you got some options.
- Sarah (10/5): The perfect place for a homely stay in Tokyo! - NBH was wonderful. Ash is frankly on of the best and most committed hosts I’ve ever met. I’ve stayed for ten days in a row. The place is very clean, practical and thought through with great explanations everywhere. Even though the space is rather small, it has anything I could have wished for. Everything I needed was provided: fresh towels each day, any toiletry, breakfast snack, tea and even the possibility to take a bike for free. I’ve left feeling very fulfilled. The beds are big enough have their own light and little desk even. The other guests were friendly, you can socialize without being overwhelmed with too many people. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Make sure to bring warm clothes for potentially cold nights. But there are also extra blankets being provided.
- Christiane (8/5): Clean, small and quiet hostel with helpful owner - Great owner (same for staff and wife!), very helpful (he made an appointment for a massage for me in the neighbourhood - which is also recommended), they even shared some of their food, very clean, comfy beds, quiet (sound proof doors!) and a very quiet residential area, but near shops and a sento. Not anyone’s fault, but no window in the female dorm room - there was aircon/ventilation, but personally I prefer the option to open a window for fresh air. “Only one shower” was totally fine until two American girls stayed who thought it was their private spa - please be considerate of others, then everyone will be fine. :) - Bit far from the metro - but a nice and quiet street/hood.
- Connor (10/5): Exceptional -
- Penny (10/5): Exceptional - The hostel was calm and clean, and the bunk space well-designed. The staff are kind, as were the several guests I met during my short stay. Before my arrival I had slight concerns about sharing just one toilet/shower with many others but in reality this was never an issue. There are also onsens within a short walking distance, perfect for relaxation after a day's walking. This is a very minor gripe but the room does get a bit stuffy during the night.
- Josh (10/5): Exceptional - Our beds and room was very comfortable and we had wonderful restful sleeps. The entire place was very clean and well thought out for our stay. Ash was super helpful and friendly. His check-in details were great for your stay and he also went above and beyond in helping us sort some luggage logistics out. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay Ash!
- Katarina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Abulencia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Santiago (10/5): Worth going for your stay in Tokyo. - Really good experience, the staff was very friendly and helpful on whatever I needed help with; the facilities were very clean and I would not hesitate to stay there if I go to Tokyo a second time. I liked everything.
- Perry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lyndsey (10/5): Beautiful hostel - An oasis in the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Satoshi is such an attentive host and the attention to detail was incredible (fresh towels, super clean everywhere). My room was so cosy and peaceful, a perfect stay. I really loved this hostel! I extended my stay.
- Aneta (9/5): Superb -
- Ela (10/5): I regret not staying for a longer time :) - I had some doubts about the place at first but the reviews did not lie, this place is amazing! I want to start off with owner, Ash, he goes above and beyond to ensure everyone feels comfortable during their stay here, and I wish I could rate this place a 100 stars out of 10 but I can't. Now on to the place itself, it is a bit small but it is comfortable and very homey, from the beds, the common area, the toilets, the showers, etc. everything was designed with the people who are going to use it in mind and I appreciate that because you truly feel like everything is catered to make you feel as comfortable as possible. I was surprised at how spacious the bunks are (there's a table and a place where you can just put down your feet), the bed and the pillows were very comfortable, the shower, the toilets, they were all clean. There's also free snacks, breakfast, refreshments, etc., because the good service and comfortable place just wasn't enough. Also Ash and the other people at the hostel are all very friendly, I am an introvert so I try to avoid any social interactions but it was great to talk to them even for just a bit, it's interesting to know everyone's stories. Basically for every single problem or need that you think you have, Ash has an answer to it. I will definitely stay here again even I am in Tokyo! It's not the perfect place so I only say these things not to talk bad about the place but to keep other travelers informed on what they are getting into. Like I mentioned, the place is very small, there IS a place to leave your luggage inside the room however there is almost no place to unpack/pack or organize your stuff in the room because the space to move around there is small, so you will have to do this in the common area. The top bunk beds are very high, it's a little bit tough to get up and get down, but there's enough extra handrails to guide you (still tough, I personally found it hard to get down but maybe that's just me not being used to sleep on the top bunk). There is only one shower for everyone, it wasn't really a problem for me but just keep it in mind when you book the place. The location itself is a little far from the train station, the nearest ones which are Togoshi-Ginza Station or Togoshi Station are both about 1km away but there's a few bus stops very near the hostel which can take you directly to Gotanda Station and I found this one to be more convenient (just a little more expensive), but you could walk to Gotanda Station too if you wanted. But really these are just some of the things that I found a little inconvenient, there's still like 300 positive things about the place, these are more like nitpicks and I just want to inform other travelers to set some expectations. Overall, I would stay here again and again.
- Adrian (10/5): Very homely place just outside the major areas of Tokyo - I loved No Borders Hostel :) I think all the comments here will repeat how thoughtful a host Satoshi (Ash) is. I stayed only two nights but i really wish i could have stayed more. The rooms are capsule-type, and there's a chill living area which makes you feel like you're in a sharehouse.
I also got to go to the nearby onsen, and Satoshi has prepared bottles of body wash and shampoo, plus a bike you can borrow. We also had a meaningful talk about Japanese education, so all in all a great trip. I'll consider this again when I'm going on a long tokyo trip. For people who plan to be a lot closer to the main attractions, just consider that Gotanda station and the hostel location is a little out of the usual way. It was not a problem for me though! :)
- Urrego (10/5): Exceptional - Best hostel I've stay in within my whole trip. Truly felt welcomed to stay in a traditional Japanese home. Everything was very organized and clean. Ash was exceptional all around. Help with all questions, guidance around town and as well as tips to travel Japan. I really enjoyed our conversations. I felt at home here. The vibe was socialable and nice to share a meal with others. There was breakfast and drinks included, which was very kind. The neighborhood was quite and you could borrow a bike to get around to the onsen or shops. Wish I had more day to stay, definitely would stay again when I return to tokyo Only one shower, but there was never really any problem with that. Never had to wait a turn or anything.
- Tamar (10/5): Exceptional - Ash is the kindest Host Ive had. He helped me a lot. The hostel is very cozy and have a familey vibe to it, allways clean and tidy. I highly recomend.
- Lena (10/5): I‘d always come back! - I started my Japan trip at this hostel and it was the best choice! Everything is clean and Ash, the host, is a very welcoming guy. He truly cares about the small details in this hostel and helped me out wherever he could. We also shared some dinner the other night and he shared some insights about Japanese culture. Everything was great! :)
- Shih-hong (10/5): Exceptional - The owner さとしさん is very nice. Sometimes, he may prepare dinner for the guests. (FYI. that was actually his dinner, but he loves to share)
- Ngai (10/5): Exceptional - Nice amount and quality. There several options to choose.
- Lea (10/5): Awesome stay!! - Very clean and comfy place. Ash is the best host you can imagine! Also easy access to all the important places in the city. Definitely recommend!
- Meisha (10/5): I 🩷 NBH! - If I could rate No Borders Hostel 11 stars, I would. It’s an excellent place to stay - so much so that I rearranged my next visit to Tokyo so I could stay here. The property itself is in a great spot, and has beautiful wooden furnishings (that smell really beautiful in the dorm room.) the host Satoshi/Ash-san works tirelessly to keep the hostel spotlessly clean, get to know every guest, and provide local knowledge and language help. His recommendations are top notch - I tried the nearby onsen and kaitenzushi, and they were both great. Satoshi/Ash-san has also cultivated an awesome community atmosphere. No Borders Hostel is just that - guests share food, stories, and a place to rest and unwind. I was initially concerned about safety when I chose to book a hostel, but this hostel is incredibly safe, and Satoshi/Ash-san provides a secure spot to keep your valuables. If you’re thinking about staying here, do it. I made so many friends and enjoyed my time here thoroughly. There wasn’t anything I didn’t like.
- Luis (10/5): Exceptional - I stayed at 3 different hostels during my stay in Tokyo and by far this was the best, thank you Ash!! 10/10
- Julee (10/5): The most perfect stay - The hostel is super cozy with the studio style layout and Satoshi is an exceptional host! He worked around my late arrival and was always willing to help me with all the questions I had during my 5 day stay. Such a kind and personable guy! I would definitely come back again.
- Fran (10/5): Exceptional - Nice, soundproof room
The host is very helpful
Both the room and shared space are very clean and comfortable
- Wei (10/5): Super clean and cozy Japanese home with great hospitality - I really enjoyed the stay in No borders hostel. It’s super clean and cozy. Feels like you are living in a Japanese house and I love the smells of the place and the room. The owner Satoshi said it from the wood of the bed. It just smells really nice! The bed is the most comfortable bed I’ve had and the bed sheets as well! Btw I forgot my laptop charger after i checked out and Satoshi contacted me straight away and sent it to me! I’m really appreciate that! Thank you so much to give me such a great stay and amazing hospitality. None
- Jessica (10/5): Like living in a tiny house space!!! 🤩🤩🤩 - I loved loved staying here! Ash has put a lot of thought into every single detail in the hostel, and has left notes at most parts of the hostel which was very helpful!
- There was breakfast included which was cereal or bread which was a really nice simple way to start the day!
- The beds were so so comfortable - I haven’t slept until my alarm has gone off in a long time!
- There’s plenty of space in the female dorm, and there was a cute little desk space where you can even put your feet down and a great security box system! It felt very personal and tiny house living-isque!
- Ash also let us use his bikes which was a nice way to see and explore the neighbourhood.
- Parking was really close by and for 1200 yen a day in Tokyo?? Great great price
Ash was very helpful and I would highly recommend this place for anyone with a car and wanting a place away from the business of the main area of the city! It’s kinda far from the main stations but if you’re happy to walk, it’s completely fine 🙂
- Bryce (10/5): Exceptional - Satoshi is an incredible host and even mailed me back something I left behind. A large part of the appeal of this hostel is the friendliness of the owner.
- Brooke (9/5): Superb - The owner Satoshi-san will give you wonderful hospitality.
The area is lovely but also difficult with big luggage to get from station.
I also cant thank Satoshi enough for assisting me when I needed the help. Please make sure you confirm if you need a bottom bunk bed, if you have any mobility issues or are frail its very very difficult to get into the top bunks.
- Pierre (10/5): Exceptional - Shared bedroom with four beds. A common space with all facilities you could need; shared bathroom and toilets; absolutely no problem. The owner (Satoshi) is careful of all details. You can not expect more for this price. Gotanda station (10-12min walking) provides a lot of lunch/diner places and connection to more touristic areas (Tokyo, Ueno, etc...) through the Yamanote line which also connects to the faster Tokyo-Ueno train at Shinagawa. Connecting to the airport is simple too, through Hamamatsucho and connecting with Monorail. Maybe two minor things which could be improved: add a light button at the entrance of a bed; currently it is at the rear so need to move to the rear to turn it on; also, the lock for the box is very very small, not easy to manipulate;
The location is nice, but a bit far off; anyway, metro stations are not so far.
- Lee (10/5): perfect stay for solo travellers - really clean and cozy, and the propergy had everything that a solo travelled could ever imagine and need! ash was really detailed and considerate of the needs of the residents, would definitely recommend this property for solo travellers!
(9/5): Superb - The owner is very kind and enthusiastic!! Even though the space is smaller, I still felt comfortable and relax in these days.
- Wen-jie (10/5): Exceptional - Satoshi-san is really friendly! And the environment is clean and tidy.
- Lingzhi (10/5): Exceptional - Satoshi is a good guy, we have very good talking and sharing for food with each other, the room is really clean, and the public equipments are various and useful, Satoshi can also provide the bicycle to you if you have need, really enjoy the time with no border hostel and Satoshi, I will come here again next time for sure, Thank you so much my friend Satoshi.
Best wishes
George
- Andrei (8/5): Very good - A small, even a tiny hostel run by a passionate guy who is trying his best to make a friendly, home-like atmosphere. I appreciate breakfast, descent kitchen to cook, a free towel every day, cleanliness, and a spacefull bed. Satoshi is very nice and exceptionally helpfull.
The location is in a quiet district, close to shopping streets, supermarkets, and onsens, very well marked on a local map. The weak point of this hostel is its functional design. There is only one small hall, which is a lobby, a kitchen, a dining place, and a social place at the same time. And all the doors of all hostel rooms, including toilet, shower and everything go to there.
Practically, it means that if you sit at the table and eat you sushi, you can enjoy whatching everyone visiting the toilet, showering, cleaning their teeth literally a couple of metres aside. Usually, such places of personal hygiene is more hidden and not located so directly to a public view.
- Elvi (8/5): very sweet place, calm and kind atmosphere -
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional - This hostel offers a truly cozy atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. The owner is remarkably attentive, ensuring that every guest feels welcomed and well cared for. The cleanliness of the place is impeccable. Additionally, the amenities provided are both thoughtful and useful, enhancing the overall stay experience. Highly recommended for travelers looking for a comfortable, friendly, and clean place to stay.
- Ahmed (10/5): I stayed there 3 nights, met wonderful people, and enjoyed my stay either in the cabin or in the commun area. - The owner Satochi did a great job for a relatively small space, very cozy and pretty. He is also very kind and always ready to help and give information. Nothing.
- Ummati (7/5): Good -
- Jacob (10/5): Amazing experience, thankyou! - The owner, Satoshi, is a lovely person! He was very helpful and knowledgeable for someone who has never travelled to Japan (or anywhere out of Australia for that matter!) made my first overseas hostel a great experience. His English is great too! The other guests were also kind and easy to spend time with in the communal area, I think this place attracts nice people haha
- Mark (9/5): Superb -
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional -
