Guest Reviews
- Alfredo Jeremías (6/5): - Una de las habitaciones tenía la ducha en la que no salía agua. Las camas muy incómodas, con colchones en mal estado.
- Keith (10/5): - Lovely quiet and historic place.
Bit it's a bit run down in places.
- Rachel (6/5): - A great, if shabby, place to stay on Trelew. We were visiting for the celebration of the landing of the Welsh settlers and just passing through. We didn’t find much to do in Trelew. The Touring Club was friendly, cheap and had great parking. We had a few drinks but ate elsewhere (Welsh Tea). The room was perfectly fine (toilet flush needed fixing). Recommended for a short stay.
- Gregory (6/5): - Overall, it was an okay stay. I chose this place for before my early AM flight, after visiting the surrounding areas. And I chose it because of its history. The biggest downside is that the rooms/halls are noisy. There was one other person staying on my floor/wing and I could basically hear everything they were doing. The restaurant attached is convenient and nice, with a somewhat basic menu. I do appreciate there was someone who does overnight watch that is also available to assist in calling a taxi for the airport.
- Claire (10/5): Perfect for one night at very reasonable price. Gr - This is a charming inn with a lot of history. It’s a great price and ideal if you want something clean and comfortable. The room was quiet. The restaurant/bar did us a great meal which was also very reasonable!
- Jose Manuel (10/5): - Dueños, y personal super amables, el hotel inolvidable,
FELICIDADES
- Steven (10/5): - There is a lot of history in this hotel and it was a privilege to stay there even briefly.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This property need a lot repair the shower is broker the bathroom is really bad.
Very good location and nice staff buy the hotel need repairs.
- BertiePMM (8/5): Amazing Historical Hotel and Cafe/Bar - I hadn't been to Trelew for several decades. Somebody recommended we visit this place for their excellent toasted sandwiches. Well... we got a lot more than that! In fact, I discovered that I had visited this place 52 years ago in July 1967 with my Dad. This place has hardly changed in all these years! It has an incredible ambience, with the walls decorated with dozens of old pictures depicting the history of the Touring Club. In fact, Antoine de Saint Exupery, the famous french aviator, overnighted here on several occasions in the 1920s. We loved the bar and the excellent service, and the coffee was very good too. We did not, however, stay overnight at this hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is an institution in the town. The confiteria is stuffed with historic bric a brac to savour. Staff is friendly and simple food well done. Rooms are all right. Not the Ritz but everything works and there is that superb staircase to marvel at. Stayed there three times over the years and I would go back any time. Great location for bus station and town centre and fhe not to be missed museums across the road.
- MikeLondonSE (8/5): Wonderful historical edifice, attentive staff, great boss who takes you on a tour, central, rooms dated, watch the bill - 19-21/1/19
We three British middle aged guys were starting our last third of our month touring Argentina. Trelew was on our return leg from the south back to BA. We had already visited this town and hotel a dizen years ago. Nothing seems to have changed much in the hotel whereas the town has!
As there are so many good, indifferent and bad points to this hotel I will try to do it in bullet points for brevity. Note it is not the Good, Bad and the Ugly!
Good
On arrival use the central big cafe/restaurant door to go in and head for the far left corner for reception. We used the locked hotel door to the right (with brass plates either side) and had to wait for attention (no big deal!)
We arrived earlier than checkin at 11:40 on a Saturday, but at reception we got a warm welcome and were taken to our room 205 by the bell boy to find it was not ready yet so we descended down again with our 6kg bags to reception and were offered tea and
Dining
Just experience the large space even of mot staying there, they serve food and have a fill bar, and take cards which is a godsend (expensive ATMs) for late night beers to be added onto the overall bill too.
If you ask for more coffees or toast for breakfast you can get a mountain of toast!
In order to recover from the uncomfortable 11.5hr overnight coach journey I needed to relax and have a beer (after noon as it was). I took a table to type up TA reviews, have a litre of Quilmes stout and was given crisps and nuts as nibbles. I was chatting to the boss about amplifying his phone music and developed a cough as a peanut aggravated my throat. Instantly a waiter presented me with a small glass of soda water, which was really nice of him. Great service.
At breakfast you can ask for more toast and coffees no problem.
Room
205 was a fair size with two singles and a double.
Jolly cleaning staff offering to change towels, top up toilet rolls, and clean room on our first morning.
Central lamp/fan combi controlled from door.
Each bed had an overhead reading lamp with nearby switches.
Bathroom
A good size bath with three way tap for bath and shower and shower curtain.
Big sink with cupboard and mirror over with two bright lights over that so good for shaving.
Good water pressure for jetting razors out.
Indifferent
Dining
Music in beautiful dining room is catering to my demographic (baby boomers 50-70) with varied sometimes obscure pop, listening to Squeeze's Up the Junction, at the mo (my home band in Deptford). On arrival the boss was playing traditional music to himself on his phone so I got him to turn the main 'musak' down and put his phone in a box to let us all here his much better music!
The restaurant is popular with older groups of local guys in general relaxing and being friendly to tourists.
The furniture has seen better days but is of a period and part of the charm.
Breakfast
A basic all morning serving of coffee and medialunas, but you have to ask for toast, butter, jam, hot chocolate
Room
Wifi in room was a bit erratic, better in the restaurant/bar with charging points along the wall so keeping ip to date with trends.
Bathroom
70s blue suite is the decor of its time, all clean with a bidet. The hot tap was leaking and I forgot to let the management know
Bad
Dining
There is quite a bit of litter on the marble floor, building up no doubt as to clean the whole place would be a lot of work daily. It is not dirty though.
As the room is hard furnished it is very echoey and noisy.
Wobbly round big table by the window (on it now) which cannot be fixed with a folded napkin unfortunately. It is very old and obviously 'part of the furniture ' so enjoy (disfrutafa as they say)!
Room
Beds a bit soft and old but clean linen (fitted sheets just about fit better than most!)
Noisy fan (no A/C which is fair enough) bit it did get stuffy in the room (it was a heatwave) and opening the window (mosquito mesh side) helped.
Loud squealing door which I oiled with vaseline, the bathroom door similarly.
The door handle was falling off and very noisy on closing. Tolerances Re fine and if not closed properly will open unexpectedly in the wind!
Noisy echoey corridor so all door closing and cleaners in the morning can be heard.
Checkout is apparently 10, pushing it as I have only just started having breakfast and writing this review at 09:50! It is usually 11.
Bathroom
Dripping hot tap which I will tell the management about on leaving
Toilet seat was missing so asked for one which was left by the toilet for us to install. As I am practical I did (the toilet was clean enough but not a nice job, especially as it was very cheap PRC made and did not engage properly after ten minutes of trying it still fell off). They must have bought a job lot of dozens and be regretting it!).
The only bin in the rooms is here, it is lined with a bag, although we could have done with another in the room itself.
Other points
Beware descending the magnificent staircase as (despite anti slip tape) it is slippy on the very edge of each step (where the strip should be!). We saw a chap slide down on his back but not hurt. The staff seem used to it.
The roof terrace is completely underexploited and could be a wonderful space if designed properly to keep off wind and sun. It has a great view over the city and main road. We watched the full lunar eclipse from it on our last night.
I could not find the fabled sweet shop anywhere!
We left our bags behind reception after checking out at 11:30 (the boss was not too bothered about our very late leaving of the room but there is a sign saying 'Early Check Up' on the desk, but no time specified.
After visiting the very good palaeontology museum nearby we returned to collect our bags and I asked the boss if we could visit Butch Cassidy's room. There was an Argentinian couple waiting to do the same luckily so the five of us were given a tour of the old grand dining room, courtyard, Welsh immigrants relief alabaster panel, BC's ground floor room with furnishings and effects of the time, as well as the old collection of tortoises in the raised bed, one of which had laid eggs! The courtyard also had interesting trees, bushes and a vine with grapes from which they make wine. The boss was very proud of his hotel, obviously and as we collected our hags and bad farewell to Raphael and his crew, he was happy to let us take a selfie.
As I am finishing off the review I have ha been sorting through the credit card receipt for the HTC which says 4220, I have no itemised bill. The original rooms were 3100 so I have been working out how three of us spent 1,120 over two days for relatively little. Big quilmes stout Beer, wine, 2 coffees on arrival and a big Quilmes each night as a nightcap only adds up to about to about 600. My friend who paid the bill said they seem to have charged for the extra coffees at breakfast and higher prices than on the door (and we did not use room service). As we have been forced in effect to use Mastercard - as bank ATMs limit you to 4000p (£80) cash withdrawals and charge a minimum of £5 (up to £8 if unlucky) for the privilege - and we ran out of cash early in our month as Argentina was not as cheap as we had expected and credit cards are rarely accepted (unlike Visa Debit which is).
Basically we rarely 'put things on the bill' as rarely in this situation. In this case we have been unaware of things like extra breakfast coffees (odd as nowhere else does this) and elevated prices for guests orders compared to the prices on the door or over the bar that I was basing my estimates on and entering them into my Google Sheets spreadsheet of holiday running costs I keep. I have only a single credit card receipt for 4,220 for the two nights (3100 basic for two nights). No itemised bill was presented and I am somewhat miffed at this. We shall not 'put it on the bill' again!
Still, the place is wonderful and yes, ask the friendly boss for a guided tour. It is an old hotel so you have to forgive it for some technical things.
- Manc-Holidays (10/5): By far the best bar in Trelew - Atmospheric. Great bar, good service. Have a look around the hotel - time has stopped. Also, don't leave without asking to look at the room in which Butch Cassidy stayed. You'll be in for a treat. It's a must on anyone's itinerary
- mamat777 (8/5): Back in time in the nice hotel - Nice and very simple hotel. Clean. The rooms are rather a small as the beds are. The bathroom, the same. This a very typical place where you feel back in time but in the good way. The parking is free and secures.
- ThomDijkstra (2/5): Crappy place - Avoid like the plague if you can. Terribly outdated rooms (and not in a good way) with horrible beds, no sound proofing so lots of noise from the hallways and outside, and the worst and rudest service I have ever experienced in my life.
- 977christineg (8/5): One of a kind - Fabulous bar full of photos and memorabilia, marble staircase, hotel is faded a bit but clean, cheap and such an experience. Very central for museums, parks and the bus station. Room was warm and comfortable if a bit small and the shower was not great but perfect for a short stay.
- Heaverman (4/5): Just visit the bar - True that this historic building is centrally located, close to the museums, parks and the bus terminal. The cafe/bar is worth a visit and there is an impressive marble staircase.. However, my room,116, and bathroom offered the bare minimum of comfort. I hadn't slept in such a tiny bed since childhood.
Most of the staff clearly regarded guests as a nuisance and looked totally surprised when one turned up early morning in the cafe expecting breakfast. I was booked in over Christmas and was not told on arrival that the cafe/bar would be closed for two days and that no food or drinks would be available. Luckily I was able to buy some fruit and drink at the nearby supermarket on Christmas Eve as otherwise I would have had an enforced 24-hour fast.
- ChristinaHind (8/5): Steeped in history, full of character - We loved this place. It was cheap and cheerful but was clean and convenient. The bar/breakfast room was just as it always has been. The walls were covered in photos and memorabilia. Fascinating!
Breakfast was quite an experience because it was like going back in time.
The staff were eager to please
- sjblackman (10/5): Character in spades, great bar, great service. - This historic hotel has played host to Butch Cassidy in 1901 (he stayed with another man and a woman in the same room--who knew 1901 was such fun?) and Antoine de Ste.-Exupery in 1930. and frankly, it doesn't seem to have changed a whole lot since then.
The grand staircase leads to clean, adequate rooms with clean, adequate bedding and clean, adequate sheets. It's quiet and comfortable if unsophisticated and utilitarian. We were comfortable, slept well, and felt secure.
But the bar is an amazing place to watch people, whether at breakfast or dinner or any other time. Standout items are the cofffee, which is amazing, and the Lomito, which is absolutely as good as I have had, an awesome rendition of an amazing sandwich.
The brothers who run the place are friendly, helpful, and genuinely outgoing, and while they don't speak a lot of English and we don't speak a lot of Spanish, they were great and helpful and the serving staff are likewise.
Don't forget to ask for a showing of Butch Cassidy's room and if you're lucky, you may even have a chance to see the Patagonian tortoises in the courtyard, who have evidently been there since the hotel opened.
It's a two minute walk to the Paleontological Museum and about 5 minutes to the bus station and numerous attractive restaurant choices, but do have a Lomito in the bar. You may well be spoiled for life.
- 96phild (8/5): Tired but iconic - Not quite knowing what to expect, I stood and looked around for several minutes, taking in all the items that decorate the bar/restaurant area. The place is 'tired' (I wouldn't call it run down) but I loved it. They also came to our rescue when our flight from Esquel to Buenos Aires was cancelled and we had to travel overnight by coach to Trelew to catch the rearranged one. We turned up at 06:30 and were able to book three day rooms and then sat down for a very welcome breakfast of croissants and coffee. We ate a couple of meals which were basic but tasty (and quite cheap). There is a selection of bottled beers which we also sampled. Free Wi fi is available in the bar area.
On our initial arrival we were taken around to the back to see Butch Cassidy's room. Legend has it that he and his gang stayed here during their heyday. They also have a number of tortoises that live in the back yard.
The rooms are simply (sparsely) furnished but the beds were comfortable and there was hot water for the shower and sink.
I really liked the place. In its heyday it would have been quite special. It is still special now.
- GrahamL (4/5): Not one I'd recommend - This hotel may have been very grand in its time, but is showing major signs of wear and tear. The bedroom was in the main part of the hotel, and away from the bar and hence very quiet.
The bedroom was spacious, but the radiator leaked, as did the sink when you used the taps - clearly long standing problems. The toilet seat was cracked. The towels were clean, but very thin. The bar had some character, but did play host to a lot of flies. The bar snacks were quite good, and the breakfast simple and adequate. Having stayed there once, we would not return there.
- Kymosavvy (8/5): Interesting Bar - We did not stay at this hotel but popped in for a beer as we heard that it was interesting. Spent a pleasant hour here people watching a taking photos of this old bar that seems trapped in time - we half expected Butch Cassidy to drop in and join us. Stick to the Cilmes Beer - we tried the Artisan Beers that they sell here - delicious but very very expensive!!!
- LeBristolUK (4/5): Character ! - Amazing bar – with white coated waiters and a huge selection of dusty bottles, some of which looked to date from before the Spanish invasion ! The unique charm was matched in the bedroom, in a “modern” wing out the back and had a psychedically lurid purple bathroom suite. I can't imagine there is anything quite like it, anywhere.
Other than that it was basic, very basic. And cheap. Trelew is not awful but is not somewhere to linger either.
The nearby charming Welsh village of Gaiman would be a much better place to stay, but there are only a handful of beds there so it is essential to book in advance if you want to be sure of getting in at the inn.
- Tombrasil (8/5): A unique place - This place fairly reeks of history and character. We love to stay in slightly oddball spots, and don't mind a hotel being quite frayed at the edges- in fact, we always choose character over sanitised averageness. Our room, admittedly, lacked the space required to swing a gerbil but the bathroom was surpisingly spacious and had a real bath.
But the Touring Club has something intangible about it- and you're not going to stay there for the luxury rooms. The bar is utterly fantastic- we ordered Campari and soda and a soda siphon, bucket of ice and a full bottle of the red stuff arrived on our table. The Patagonian pioneer spirit is still there. We only stayed one night, but the morning we left the owner was showing a group of about 30 local eight year olds around- it's that kind of place. Plus, there are pet tortoises in the back yard! DO stay here if you enjoy quirky and don't mind battered. In all events, go to the bar.
- TripperHappy (2/5): Not recommended - This hotel has a great bar and interesting history (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid supposedly stayed there) but don't let that lure you into making a reservation. The rooms look like they were last refurbished in the 1960s, the beds have greying sheets and blankets with suspect stains, and the bathrooms ancient, slimy bath mats and threadbare towels. The aircon doesn't work properly and is incredibly noisy. It's cheap (about £20 a night) but I'd only go there if you were desperate: the Rayentray or Libertador looked better, though none of Trelew's hotel options are that fantastic. I'd definitely recommend a drink in the Touring Club bar though. A meeting point for everyone in the town, the friendly waiters serve bottles of Gancia (vermouth), soda, lemon and ice with a few crisps and nuts for £1 per person: the perfect way to unwind after a bit of whale watching.
