Guest Reviews
- shannonaU7149DE (2/5): Hostel Overbooked - Made accommodation stressful right at the start - Although I had booked my single room for 9 days almost one year in advance, I was notified one day before my arrival that the hostel had overbooked itself. I was given alternate accommodation (one night at one hotel and then I had to move to a second hotel for the other 8 days) in the same area, but these places were not hostels. I could not make my own meals, which increased my costs. I would never recommend this hostel to anyone.
- Sky-Snow-Sun (6/5): Reasonable hostel accomodation in good spot. - Convenient location, very small room but clean and adequate for our needs. Quiet as requested. Close enough to tube station to walk with luggage. No elevator but only one flight of stairs for us. Bit warm in summer.
- geniegal (2/5): Very Disappointed! - We cannot rate this property as we did not get to stay! Arrived in the afternoon only to be told by young guests, sitting out the front, that the hostel was fully booked. No rooms available. Why? Simply because it had been totally booked out by an American school group. They were staying for quite some time. Thank goodness one of the girls rang the host for us because we didn’t have a working phone. We were told we had been booked into a hotel around the corner. It would have been nice to have been told this in advance especially since I had reconfirmed, via email, the day before as originally requested. We were to pay the same money and had been upgraded to a full breakfast rather than a continental one. On reflection, the hotel we had been booked into was probably better but that’s not really the point.
- orladunphy (10/5): Perfect - Our private room was so affordable and in a perfect location, I was a bit weary as to how good it was, almost too good to be true! However it was perfectly suited to what we needed. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. Spacious room. Very simple and quite old-fashioned, but it was all we needed. Very clean. Will definitely be returning next time we come to London on a weekend city-break!!
- J8774AXhasana (2/5): Pay more and don't stay here - Place is falling apart... not sure how they are rated 4 star. Aside from the location is kind of terrible. Bathrooms are in very very rough shape. Even if it's clean you cannot tell because it's old as hell.
- JamieM275 (2/5): worst place I have ever stayed - I am not one to leave negative reviews but this place deserves it. Other than the good location and friendly staff this place is awful and should be shut down. Massive stains on the carpets, stains on the 'new' bedding, curtains hanging off the rails, huge holes in the walls both in the bedrooms and in the bathroom, massive water damage in the bathrooms, no lock on the toilet doors, no working lights in the bathrooms... i could go on. Worst place I have ever stayed. please avoid. No idea how this place has over a 4 star rating.
- pony24 (10/5): Home from home...excellent location and value - Was late booking for me and my son what could of been a disaster turn out quite amazing...the nicest people I have stayed with felt very safe with me son...just really nice people and very clean...we stay in hostels alot and I do be nervous when things get messy not here.
- HHighland2 (8/5): Great location, friendly atmosphere - Was very sceptical about this as never stayed in one before but we were met a thecdoor quickly booked in then was shown the dining room and told about breakfast which we didn't use as we are vegan however we could have easily of got our own pb milk. Our room was clean, beds extremely comfortable a wardrobe, big fan, fridge and air purifier. The toilets and showers were on the landing.
Great central location.
I would definitely stay again.
- TIMELORDLeicester (8/5): Great location - Friendly welcome basic but clean room great lounge and contentail breekie ideal location felt very safe only negitive bathrooms need refurbished but I will be back as it's got old world charm and lovely location
- Travellerj9 (2/5): Disgusting, go elsewhere. - Where to start, room infested with ants, stained sheets, rock hard bed, boiling hot room, noisy fridge, tiles hanging off the shower cubicles, stagnant water in the shower tray, just generally disgusting. I hardly got any sleep. If you can afford more, go elsewhere.
- ET1334 (8/5): Calm, nice kitchen and living room. And they have books :D - The hotel is very calm despite located behind the British Museum. The visitors also seems to be of the calm kind, mostly singles or people staying there for work. So no party hordes, which I was very thankful for.
The shared bathrooms are clean, despite a few moldy spots here and there. Only downside is the rug in the room itself, which despite all the clenaing efforts just looks dirty as people enter with their street shoes. The beds are very soft, for heavier persons they might be even too soft.
The all fenale dorm had its own microwave and fridge, which is very pratical. Only there were no reading lamps for each bed, but this is made up for by the very nice living room and the shared kitchen.
The living room has a good selection of books and even in the dorm there are books available. As a bibliophile I found this to be a nice touch. The kitchen has every thing you need to cook your own meal and the staff make sure everyone cleans up properly. They are also very nice and helpful.
Definitely will go there again :D
- Luke_Sweeney_Todd (10/5): Fantastic budget accommodation in Central London - I stayed just one night earlier in the week. This hotel / hostel is just a five minute walk from the British Museum, and around a twenty minute walk into Central London (Leicester Square)
The accommodation was basic but just what I needed so that I could spend the night and return home the following morning.
Continental breakfast provided from around 8am each morning.
- jusjada (4/5): Adequate...improvements could make better - We've stayed in many hostel type accommodations in our travels but found Pickwick to be just adequate. I'll preface this review by saying we were in London during a massive heat wave which of course was NOT Pickwick's doing 😃. While we lay on the tiny beds, soaked in our own fluids, the fan provided was NOT adequate and moved a minute portion of air, cooling absolutely nothing. The window opened only about 5 inches and had to be propped open with our garbage bin. To get more are possibly moving We propped open our room door which apparently invited others (of both sexes) to pop inside to gawk at us...our fault. We were miserable. The bathrooms were tiny and often the toilets were clogged with?? While we realize & appreciate the historical charm and nature of the building, it eventually bacame to much for us to endure and we sought other lodging.
- edels (10/5): Excellent home from home - I loved my stay at Pickwick Hall. Its located in a lovely area which was surprisingly quiet for what is central London within walking distance of Covent Garden, Kings Cross, Westminster etc. The accommodation was like a home from home with a very comfortable lounge with lots of cozy sofas, a good size kitchen for preparing meals and a really friendly atmosphere with very helpful staff. I stayed in a nice clean single room with access to a shared bathroom and happily never had to queue for a shower. The breakfast while basic is a good start to the day and a welcome addition. I'll definitely stay at Pickwick Hall again as its a fantastic place for was was a very reasonable rate particularly compared to other hostels or nearby. I'd recommend visiting the Charles Dickins museum which was a short walk away.
- haleynl2 (10/5): Surprise and Delight!! - Talk about Surprise and Delight - Pickwick Hall does exactly that! I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
We had a complicated situation where I had to move into a female dorm room for one night while my brother took my space in our private room with my husband. On the day I had to swap rooms, Alzira had repositioned our room so the bed was in two singles instead of a double! We hadn't even considered that as a possibility, but my brother and husband were thrilled that they didn't have to share a bed that night. Then, when I moved out of the dorm and back into the private room, the beds were once again moved together. It was a little thing, but it was unexpected and really really thoughtful.
Our private bedroom on the 2nd floor shared a bathroom area (two showers and two toilet stalls). I literally never ran into anyone else in the bathroom or shower area. The room was clean, and had a wardrobe with plenty of hangers, a microwave and fridge, a sink (SO great not to have to traipse back to the bathroom just to brush your teeth!), a desk, a good fan, a nightstand and two lamps. Breakfast was simple (cereal and toast) but sufficient to get a good start to the day. Patrick was very friendly, very very kind, and quick to respond to my emails.
For the cost alone, I don't think you'll find a better place - clean, quiet hostel, friendly hosts, and IDEAL location (very close to Holborn and Russell Station Tube stations and British Museum).
- 125kirah (10/5): Absolutely loved it! - Brilliant and charming place; great value for money, central location, clean room and comfortable beds, friendly and helpful staff and good directions to get there. And tasty breakfast! This place exceeded all my expectations. Really appreciated being able to check in early free of charge after a long flight. Nothing to fault at all, I will come back whenever I am in London! Fully recommend this place!
- lleykifanatic (10/5): A place that feels like home - This is the second time I have stayed in Pickwick Hall. It is a very charming, cozy and quiet place in the heart of London. If you're looking for place that feels like home instead of a regular hotel or hostel, Pickwick Hall is the place. Patrick and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. I felt like they treated me as their guest instead of just someone who stayed there at night. I would highly recommend Pickwick Hall.
- uklarka (2/5): Very dated and photos are misleading - Stayed here for 2 nights. Positives excellent location, price reasonable, bedding clean and staff seem friendly. However the main reason for 1 star review is that the place is in a terrible state; dated carpet not fixed to floor properly, old and odd furniture, lock on my room door was about to come / not secure. Only hot water in toilet wash basin. The place really needs renovation. Sorry.
- Eleri_M92 (10/5): Would stay here again - Great location, 10min walk from Underground, short walking distance to Russell Square park, British Museum and bars/restaurants. Great to have breakfast included (cereals/toast/tea + coffee). Hostel has lovely vibes with shared dining room, sitting room with lots of sofas and books. Shared bathrooms were clean, I stayed in a private double room which was quiet and had a huge comfy bed, desk, fridge, microwave and sink . Free wifi and friendly staff. Stored my bags for me the next day which was helpfuk
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Small room in the city centre
- Verified traveler (4/5): You get what you pay for! - This is a bit of a strange place. The picture DO NOT represent the room I had which was in the basement. It was very dated and need of modernisation. Whilst there was a microwave and fridge there was no tea and coffee making and not even a glass or anything for water. Breakfast doesn’t start until 8 yhoug a slightly earlier start was offered at 7.45. I am not sure whether I was a little paranoid or not but it felt as though my comings and going’s were observed as on one occasions I was met at the top of the stairs on MH arrival back! Just all a bit strange!
- carolinet146 (10/5): A little gem of a find! - Excellent hostel friendly quiet good facilities and easy to help yourself breakfast. My only concern really was that I would prefer a locker or equivalent in the room because I wanted to bring some valuable clothes and shoes with me but felt uncomfortable doing so when I would be leaving them in a room with people I hadn’t even met.
Lovely to have a proper bed in a hostel - so much nicer than a bunk bed. And ensuite between 4 was great!
I will definitely be staying here again and recommending it highly to others!
