Richard (2/5): Closed hotel - The hotel was closed. We had not been told. There were mice running around the reception! We were moved hotel and where we went was lovely but the main reason we booked this hotel was for the swimming pool for our children and the hotel we moved to didn’t have one.

Abigail (4/5): Ok but not great. - It was clear that the room had not had an update in quite a while, other than the decorating. There was a trouser press with a broken ironing board (it wouldn't stay up), an ironing board in the wardrobe that would only go to half height, no outlets in the room to speak of, a hair dryer from the 80s on the wall in the bathroom that didn't work, a towel warming rack on the wall in the bathroom that didn't work, and the cabinet labeled 'Mini Bar' was entirely empty. My husband ended up ironing his shirt while sitting on the bed with the ironing board between the bed and the wall (a space about a foot and a half wide) because that was the only plug we could find. While not devastating, it was certainly irritating for a hotel we were paying £120/nt for. And before you ask, we didn't have time to call the desk and ask for another board, we had a show to get to. Over all, the hotel was alright but nothing special and I would have expected to pay about half what we did. The rooms need a serious update to charge more.

Michelle (6/5): Could be so much better - Nice bar/restaurant, reception area etc. Was in building across the road, one lift broken so the other was packed all the time and only held 8 people. Rooms are very noisy. Windows are single pane and had gaps, so could hear everything outside. Walls are so this I could hear people next door coughing! Talking to others it seems this building across the road was definitely not the standard of the main building. Drawers in my room were broken, old taps and furniture. Good location and reasonable breakfast.

Barry (6/5): Not a very good location and hotel need updating - Was ok - that’s the best I can say. Reception staff good. Room clean-ish - I had to wash up coffee cups as very dusty (don’t know when the room as last used) Toilet flush worked once you got the knack Shower controls ridiculous- you had two knobs which apparently controlled the flow and temperature but neither was quick to respond so plenty of squealing when very hot and very cold water was endured until you got it right. Wardrobe doors needed a lot of effort to open and close. It looked like a bodged repair had been done on them which didn’t help. Basically room needed updating. Having said that the room was comfortable. Location is not great as it’s about a 30 minutes walk to anywhere central. Wouldn’t feel safe doing the walk to and from hotel if I had kids with me.
Oliver (6/5): Not the greatest. - The room itself was fine, clean and tidy. The room was far too hot, you could only open the window a crack as it was on the 4th floor. A huge fan was provided but all it seemed to do was move the hot air as there wasn’t enough fresh air coming in. Both nights we had to sleep with the window open and both nights there were drunken idiots outside chanting, as this was in between the buildings I am guessing they were guests, this went on til 2am without any of the staff moving them on.

Angel (8/5): Meh - Check in to the room was smooth, however the room had a funny smell upon entry and it was BOILING. Yes, it’s December and cold out but it was incredibly uncomfortable. We called reception who said someone would come and open the window (which was locked shut for security reasons). Turns out maintenance were having a break and the manager came to assist an hour later, opening the window by about 10cms. Tried to order room service after a long day traveling but no one would answer the phone. I went to the restaurant to order and the gentlemen was really helpful when ordering food to suit our dietary requirements (allergy to gluten). Parking was full on arrival so I used JustPark instead. The room was fine, clean and tidy and a big TV but even with a fan in the room it was very stressful trying to get ready to go out in such a sweaty atmosphere. Not what I expected for the price.

Bhushan (4/5): Hotel is good for convenience only i.e. location - Check in was ok. when I went to the room and saw the condition of the room, the decor the shower everything is dated. No air condition. the shower was not working properly. The taps were making noise due to pressure problem. Lights are not good enough. The service in the restaurant was poor including the quality of food. I complained about the room and sower to Khalid at the reception the day I checked in . He then gave me 2 free breakfast but after having food in the restaurant I could not be asked for. I booked through Hotels.com for 2 nights and then I directly booked for on extra night with the hotel. I found out that Booking via hotels.com was more expensive than booking directly with the hotel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Perdip (8/5): Good stay and value - Enjoyed my stay and was a good experience. The only thing to note is that the radiator was off by default and you have to turn the dial on them to turn them on.

Stuart (2/5): cheap, you pay what you get - Hotel reception and bar area are in nice decoration where as the bedrooms are in need of upgrade. Service where do i start or the lack of it, no bar staff in both area's waited at least 5 to 10 mins in both to be served no one around then no apology for the wait. Restaurant a que of 2 with about 4 tables in the there and yet there running round like headless chickens considering there must have been 10 staff including what i can guess is a manager who seem to run off when problems no recognition again shame though as the food was pretty good.

We were in the second building which was nice and quiet and we couldn't hear the noise from the parties that were going on in the main building. The rooms are getting a bit tired looking, and the shower in ours was rubbish on the first day and then didn't work at all on the second day. Maintenance did come and fix it but given that my friends had the same problem in the next room, it would appear that this is an ongoing 'upgrade programme' that they are only doing as and when people complain! Rooms are also not particularly soundproofed, so you can hear your neighbours conversations! We opted out of the breakfast and went over the road to the Barbican cafe which was great, really reasonable and great food.

Tony (8/5): Thistle hotel Barbican - Nice hotel. Not there long enough to fully appraise it though. Room was next to hotel’s extractor fans so quite noisy at night 👎 However had a comfy room and got used to the humming eventually.

Unfortunately however we had to go through three rooms before there was one in an acceptable condition. The first room could not open the door and had no window which had not been advertised, the second room could not lock the door properly, the third room was fine. The entire hotel had a strong chemical smell which I could not identify but was quite strong. As I said the good thing was the staff.

Didn't use shower or bath as not very inviting. We used the ones in the spa. Pillows not comfy. Spa was nice. Heated pool, jacuzzi and steam room were nice.

Elle (8/5): - Helpful staff at reception when I had a problem with my key card, reception and room were modern and refurbished, however the lifts were broken during my stay which wasn’t ideal with lots of luggage. Would stay here again!

Kim (8/5): Good - The room was lovely, a good size and everything was in order. The staff were helpful and even printed out my boarding pass for me. Breakfast was fine, although more and better-labelled vegan options would have been appreciated. The one problem with my room was that the street noise coming through the window was very disruptive and I struggled to sleep because of it. When I have previously stayed at this hotel (in the other building - the one where reception is), noise was not a problem. If I stay again I will request a quiet room away from the street.

This time I was on the 4th floor (6th last week) and the room as much nicer and newer than the one on the 6th. Still not great but the shower was half decent and was pleasant to stay in there. Nearest plug socket to the bed was still over the other side of the room. Staff always nice tho

Jeremy (6/5): Thistle Barbican - in need of improvement - The decor of the room was tired, there were stains on the carpet, the room was freezing cold and the shower was pathetic. The hotel itself was equally tired and in need of renovation. The suspended ceiling makes it feel like you are staying in an office. The staff especially on check in/out had poor English, mumbled so you could hardly hear what they said and were not the most welcoming or friendly On the positive side the food both breakfast and evening meal was very good
Verified traveler (6/5): cheap but there is better - Great staff. Old and noisy rooms, desperately needs modernising. Bathrooms are ancient with poor showers. Walls very thin and you can hear conversations in the next room.
Verified traveler (4/5): - Stay here on and off and this week I’m on the 6th floor and rather disappointed. Room is very tired and lacking in most modern amenities. The bathroom is basic with a door that keeps getting stuck when you close it. The shower is one of the worse yet, a dribble is being generous to the force on full power so takes forever to get clean. Room is cold and you can hear your neighbours very loudly. Stayed on the 3rd floor the week previous and was a much better room...still not great but at least it was redone within the last 15 years

jeson (8/5): - We arrived at 12:45pm and was refused early check-in. Was told to come back at 2pm. Returned at 2 pm, another receptionist said the room is not ready. At this point I told them that we were told to come back at 2pm and the room should be ready by then. The guy gave me a room right away. So somebody’s lying or just lazy. But overall, stay was fine. Room was good.
