- frequentt248 (2/5): A unique experience in a dingy establishment – the so-called Accor hotel - I'm taking the time to warn you against staying in a place that dares to call itself a 4-star hotel – Novotel Athens, Accor group. It doesn't matter that, as a status customer, I've received early check-in, late check-out and a free upgrade to an executive room on the 5th floor. Why? I encourage you to read about my experiences during my stay at this establishment and my experiences with Accor Customer Care. Of course, it is difficult to blame the hotel for its surroundings, but the view from the small balcony on the 5th floor (as a reminder, executive rooms #513 and #514 – received as part of a free upgrade for Gold members) is not very optimistic and can even be depressing. But this is only the beginning of this detailed review. 1. When you have spent over 1,000 nights in various hotels, you can be prepared for almost anything. Nevertheless, I have never experienced anything even remotely similar to what I experienced in this case. 2. Despite such extensive experience, I have never, ever been robbed in a hotel! At the Novotel Athens, it happened twice. The hotel staff stole my personalised luggage tag from room 513. According to Accor Customer Care, it was allegedly a mistake... (you can compare my luggage tag vs room key card in the pics attached.) A packet of plastic toothpicks I brought back from China was stolen from room 514. What is Accor Customer Care's position on this matter? The room is equipped with a safe... 3. So, remember to keep everything in the safe, including your toothbrush, because it may disappear! Now, analysing the attitude of the hotel staff and Accor Customer Care, I wanted to express my gratitude to them for stealing a packet of plastic toothpicks only, rather than an iPad or an electric toothbrush, which they could just as easily have taken from my room. 4. The condition of the room and its cleanliness are below any standards. But since a picture is worth a thousand words, I recommend that everyone reading this review form their own opinion. 5. For the sake of formality, I will add that when reading reviews from other travellers, I often did not believe their stories about being robbed, but this stay changed my mind on the subject because, unfortunately, I experienced it myself! 6. Not only did the hotel management not deign to meet with me for two days, but they did not even contact me by phone. And that is still the case today... A typical avoidance strategy... 7. The biggest disappointment is Accor Customer Care. I choose international chain hotels because, as I say, ‘if there are any issues, at least there is someone who is interested in solving them’. Unfortunately, this was not the case. 8. The Accor Group holds its Gold status customers in high regard, however not in this case, so I can’t imagine their attitude towards less frequent travellers, after the stay like this at Novotel Athens. 9. Looking at the attached photos, I think you will agree with me that this establishment, which considers itself a hotel, a 4-star one!, should be inspected and then closed down by the relevant Greek health authorities, because staying in such a room full of dust mites, for which dust is a breeding ground, poses a serious health risk to anyone staying in such conditions. 10. I am sorry to say that the hotel staff focus on stealing items belonging to hotel guests instead of cleaning, because, unfortunately, they have no idea how to do that. They probably don't want to either... To sum up, and to paraphrase the warnings on cigarette packets, staying at this hotel poses a serious threat to your health and carries a serious risk of being robbed. Do not count on Accor Customer Care for help either...
- arunima23jan (10/5): Excellent service, great views & thoughtful birthday surprise - We stayed at Novotel Athens for 12 nights and had a truly lovely experience. The hotel team went above and beyond to meet all our requests, including assigning us a room with a fantastic view. We were celebrating our honeymoon and my husband’s birthday, and the complimentary birthday cake was such a kind and memorable gesture. The staff were consistently warm, polite, and helpful, making us feel very well taken care of. We also really enjoyed the food at the hotel restaurant — everything we tried was delicious. While the surrounding area can feel a little rough at night (we opted for taxis in the evenings), it was perfectly fine to walk around during the day, and transport was always easy to arrange. Overall, a comfortable and memorable stay with great hospitality. We would happily stay here again.
- malikamQ1869KR (2/5): Not a four start experience. - ⭐ 1 Star – Extremely Disappointing: Not a Real 4-Star Hotel We stayed 9 nights at Novotel Athens and paid over €1000 for the stay, expecting the quality and service of a 4-star Accor experience. Instead, we encountered issues closer to a neglected roadside motel: Major Comfort & Cleanliness Failures: Air Conditioning was broken for the entire 9-night stay, forcing us to sleep with the window open every night. The sofa bed mattress was heavily stained (photos attached), and the carpet was dirty and full of stains. The entire hotel had a neglected, old smell. The rooftop pool and bar were closed with no prior notice before our arrival. Basic amenities expected at this price point were missing: The minibar was empty, and there were no slippers, bathrobes, or a dental kit provided. 🚨 Disturbing Safety & Service Failures: Upon my 2 AM arrival, no staff were present at reception. I was unable to check in or provide my passport, meaning I spent three nights unregistered—a serious legal and safety lapse. On a separate night, I was locked out when my key was demagnetized. I waited at the unattended front desk for over an hour. When an employee finally appeared, it was visually evident they had just woken up, making the service failure deliberate. The area surrounding the hotel feels unsafe, with people openly using and selling drugs visible right outside the entrance. The staff's repeated absence significantly compounded these security risks. Poor Staff Response: The reception staff’s English proficiency was limited, and they consistently refused to make any real effort to assist with our comfort requests (e.g., providing an HDMI cable). Verdict: The safety and service failures were unacceptable for any hotel, let alone one charging over €1000 and claiming a 4-star rating. Highly disappointing and absolutely not recommended.
- wintersc (8/5): Good but imperfect hotel - I had a generally pleasant stay at the Novotel Athènes. Staff were friendly. The room was well-equipped and for the most part fine. Breakfasts were excellent. The hotel’s location was perfect. It was less than a ten-minute walk to the Larissa train and subway stations and maybe a twenty-five-minute walk to Athens’ central business district. And I kind of enjoyed the gritty, economically heterogeneous neighborhood where the hotel is located; I did not find it threatening at all. But there were some signs (as other reviewers have noted) that the Novotel Athènes isn’t quite as well-maintained as most Novotels. The thing that bothered me most was that there was a strong smell of stale tobacco smoke in my theoretically “non-smoking” room (513). I realize that, in a room with a rug and cloth curtains, it’s hard to get rid of the smell, but one expects a four-star hotel to have done so. I dealt with the problem by keeping the window open all the time, even during chilly nights. Another issue: One morning there was no hot water. I complained and was told the problem would be fixed. It was, but still. And, while I wouldn’t ordinarily mention the stains on the rug at all, they certainly added to the sense that the hotel’s not quite what it would like to be. But I repeat: I had a pleasant stay.
- Keithw532 (4/5): Save you money and safety by not staying here - Don't be fooled by the fancy photos and central location, this hotel's in the middle of a ghetto, gritty by day and just plain dangerous at night. Our room was quite shabby and dusty- more cheap motel than a so called 4 star Novatel. Everything just seemed either broken or tatty, with bed sheets and towels full of holes, not even a decent cup in the room just a paper one. I've stayed in a few Novatels for work and found them to be wonderful but this place just didn't live upto expectations, very poor I suggest finding another hotel.
- nunocm (2/5): Overall terrible experience - I was scammed by the hotel. Because I arrived for the first night after midnight (after having called and sent an e-mail do the hotel they put that night as a noshow to avoid claim of points and status nights under AccorHotels membership programe. It was not a no show and they even tried to charge me the breakfast for the first night (which was already paid). It is ridiculous that the hotel didn't tell me to make the booking in any different way when I called and sent an e-mail but they completely ignored the first night. Apparently you are required to go to bed soon or you loose your PREPAID reservation. Also reception was terrible, always full of people, gym is in bad condition and staff is mostly rude. Housekeeping was extraordinary and breakfast was quite good, which is all that can be said on a good note about this Novotel. Overall a terrible experience and I don't recommend it to anyone.
- 1Regardt (2/5): What a Primative Hotel - What a unfriendly primative hotel. Notsure thats the attraction but the only good thing is the Curios Shop. Breakfast Food is boring and staff not very attentive. Room primative en not very clean. Hotel poorly located. Lack of airport shuttle..aircon issues. Smelly air in bathrooms when other people flush. Wouldnt recomment if you need a good nights rest
- Krmcg51 (6/5): Not my first choice if I ever come back - If you don't mind an older hotel in a questionable area of town, and don't expect the A/C or heat to work, this is the hotel for you, and also don't expect hot water. It is OK if you don't spend a lot of time in the hotel but it definitely needs some upgrades. The staff was very attentive, just not helpful. Breakfast was very good, and you are within walking distance to 2 metro stations and even a 22 minute walk to the main squares and shopping. Would I use it again, not before checking all my other options.

- bhayward7 (4/5): Nice Hotel in the Wrong Area - Stayed at the Novotel Athens for 2 nights. Booked two adjoining rooms for a party of six (3 adults/3 kids) The rooms are small but clean. The views from the rooms were awful, abandoned buildings, graffiti and garbage. We had the breakfast one morning, it was hectic, and the staff were yelling at eachother which made it awkward. The pool area is a great feature with a nice view of the Acropolis. The taxi from the ferry port was 60 euro, the taxi to the airport was 80 euro. As mentioned in previous reviews, the area of the hotel is described as sketchy at best. After we arrived we googled where to find a decent restaurant which was a 12 minute walk. Upon leaving the hotel the 1st person we saw was smoking from a glass pipe, the 2nd person was injecting themselves. About 6 minutes into the walk my Wife suggested we get a taxi as she didn't feel safe with the kids. No other females were seen, shattered glass and uncapped needles were prevalent in the streets. The walk to Monastiraki Square is about 20 minutes however you don't even feel like you're in Greece and sadly I spoke better greek than most. When asked where all the greek people were the taxi suggested most go to the Greek Islands to work for the summer leaving Athens in total plight.

- sonyac90 (4/5): Disappointing for a Novotel Hotel - Sitting here at rooftop Pool and bar and watching to everyone's frustration that the Pool has not opened as the lifeguard has failed to turn up. Opens at 9am normally, but it's now 11.30am. Many kids sitting here waiting. Just another thing that has made this a less than satisfactory stay. Not a 4 star hotel anymore. Rooms dated, door key needs to be reactivated every day, paper cups in room, broken tap in shower, breakfast service is subpar and location of hotel is in an area known to locals as "dangerous". Seriously rethink if you going to stay here.

From start to finish, the service was absolutely brilliant — every staff member went out of their way to make us feel welcome and looked after. The food was delicious, with a great variety to choose from. We especially loved the rooftop bar — a stunning setting where we celebrated our engagement! The team even surprised us with a complimentary bottle, which was such a thoughtful touch. Our room was beautifully decorated, thanks to Catrina, who added such a personal and elegant touch to make the occasion even more special. It honestly felt like every detail was taken care of with heart. Can’t recommend this place enough — perfect for a romantic getaway or special celebration. We’ll definitely be back!

The hotel is old, poorly maintained, and far below the standards expected from the Accor group. Rooms were dirty and outdated, the staff unfriendly and unprofessional, and even basic services like water were charged. Breakfast was low quality, more like a budget hotel than a 4-star. This hotel is a shame for Accor – absolutely not recommended.

- CortoinCanada (2/5): Giving a new meaning to the NO in NOvotel - We often stay with Novotel (did so in the last 12 months in Spain, Belgium, France,...) because it is a child friendly chain. This one was horror. They have a fully equipped restaurant which they no longer open for lunch nor dinner so they tell you to take your kids and go find a restaurant in a neighbourhood which is sketchy at best. Even our first taxi driver warned us for the area. The hotel has a very small pool with a far away Acropolis view but they don't provide service at the pool until 10.30am so the 1 staff present tells you to go 7 floors down to get coffee in the lobby. They then close the pool around 6pm so you won't get to witness the sun go down over the Acropolis. Drinks by the pool? No can do. I guess the staff need to go to bed early? In the rooms they provide 1 bathrobe for the 4 people staying in the room. The whole team is very grumpy and lazy. Some serious mismanagement going on here. Rooms are also too small to stay with a family. If you try to use the sofa bed for the kids forget about unpacking suitcases. You'll have more space in the notoriously small Tokyo hotels. Room key cards demagnetize every day. Shower stalls are patched up with silicone. The whole structure is tired with staff to match. Everything is just "No we can't do that" "No we don't have that" " No we don't provide that".
- 64Mojo (6/5): Top floor Suite with terrace - Overview As an ALL Gold member, chose this hotel for a 5 night city break Hotel Do not be put off by the location of this hotel. Yes, it’s not central and in the more desirable areas of Plaka or Monastiraki, but the Athens metro is a short walk away and all areas of Athens are easily reachable. The area felt safe to walk even at night and we never experienced any issues. The front desk staff are pleasant and helpful at all times. For airport transportation, the cost of a taxi (in March 2025) is a fixed price of €48 in either direction. Suite Probably originally 2 rooms now combined to create a suite which a huge terrace. Not everything was ideal nor perfect, but no room will meet everybody’s needs or wish list. Everything worked - bathroom, air con, lights etc - and we enjoyed a good sleep quality during our stay. Breakfast A bright and light breakfast room, plus an outdoor space, with a large choice of hot and cold breakfasts foods. There wasn’t much variation in the food choices from day to day. The coffee from the machines was awful. During the more popular breakfast times, tables were slow to be cleared though food choices were replenished. Summary A superior good chain hotel providing good value in a European capital city.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Warm hospitality but disappointing overall for a N - The highlight of our stay was the hospitality of Costas at the rooftop restaurant – truly warm and welcoming. The view of the Acropolis from the rooftop is beautiful. However, the food was very overpriced (e.g. €22 for a basic souvlaki) and didn’t match the setting. The pool was a nice addition, though small and often crowded. Rooms were clean but dated, and the surrounding area felt unsafe at night. Overall, underwhelming for a Novotel.

While the rooftop pool and the staff at the restaurant upstairs were great, there’s limited dining around the hotel. Also, there’s a lot of graffiti in the area of the hotel. The hotel itself is nice, it’s just very dated. I did have a small issue at the very beginning when we checked in. Even at check-in they did not have my room available and left me waiting in the lobby for over an hour past check-in. Upon entering my room, I had to call housekeeping back because there was hair in the shower, on the floor, and in the sink.

The ambience, the fragrance that welcomes one once you enter the property. The restaurant on the 7th floor by the pool with an mazing view esp for sundown and great background music. The delicious meals and the clean, spacious with great view rooms. The friendly staff with a positive passion and drive.

Couldn't do enough for us even though it seemed as though they were very understaffed. Great team up there!

- AlexH824 (6/5): Sad Hotel in Need of Massive Overhaul Both Customer Service and Decor - We stayed one night in a family room, which was pokey to say the least but ok for 1 night as a family. Probably 3* when compared to other European hotels. The pillow was tiny and lifted some of the hairs on my head off the mattress. The hotel does need updating and the corridors are pretty old looking but generally the interior is broadly speaking 4*, but only just. Arrived very late evening and were checked in quickly by a helpful attendant. Tried to order room service but was redirected to reception and told the room service guy was busy but would call us back. He did but odd given that the reception team could have taken the order. We decided on room service rather than venture out on an evening, as like the other reviews say, the area does have a feel of being unsafe, however the hotel is obviously trying to address this feeling among customers and had security outdoors the hotel the next morning. We only travelled in and out by taxis which the front desk called. They were very helpful with taxi services. Breakfast was good but busy and area too small for the numbers of people in the hotel. Rooftop pool was full at 10am so would also be impossible to get a bed (1 of the 14 or so available). Rooftop has nice views but so do most rooftop places in Athens, so nothing special. We’d actually booked to come back for 2 additional nights on our return to Athens from an island but decided to cancel the booking and find somewhere else given our first experience and that it took 4 emails over the course of a month, in 2 languages, to try and book a table at their rooftop restaurant. Eventually the Asst. F&B manager replied with a confirmation of booking but customer service starts before you arrive and combined with our stay was enough to put us off returning. The price of the hotel is low for Athens standards and you see why having stayed there. It could be good but wasn’t and would need to improve hugely for us to return.

- MichaelaBoca (2/5): Unhygienic - Really shocking stay at this hotel and stick there because I had prepaid via Expedia. The room was shabby and something was badly wrong with the a/c. The ducts were filthy and I developed a cough which disappeared about an hour after leaving g the room. There was never a clean table at breakfast and while there were reception and cleaning staff, one person seemed to be occasionally cleaning tables but didn’t like to be asked to do it. Insufficient serving implements so people just took food from communal bowls with their hands. My first and last Novotel experience.

- muraritodi (2/5): Terrible experiance at Novotel - We were three senior citizens couples and arrived at hotel on 9 June at about 2.45 pm with our luggage. We got out our cab and spotted a Novotel man standing on the footpath on other side of main gate. We had to call him few times before he lifted his head from his mobile phone. He came over glaring at us and we requested him to help us with our bags. He rudly said that he was security person and can not do anything. We said allright but requested him to watch for our bags as we take our bags inside and again he said it was not his duty and walked back to otherside. This was our first encounter of Rudeness and unhospitability at the hotel. We went to reception for check in and a lady started the process of checkin but left it in between when we were giving her our passports. She took up another white couple and told us to wait again in the que. Thereafter another lady opened anothe checkin counter and we went there for checkin. It was a horrowing experiance to complete the checkin with all the rudeness There was only one 750ml water bottle kept in the room and when we checked they said this waht we supply on day one and thereafter they do not give any water with a very rude tone buy it. I asked them we are staying for seccond day at the same charges so why not on seccond day also. Its their policy was curt reply. Went for shower and there was no soap in the liquid soap container. They do not have any cups or glasses for tea coffee or drinking water. They give papar cups only. This was height of, I dont know what to call it, but it was to say least absurd Only good thing was a decent break fast ( with curt and not helpfull servers)

Rooms had what you needed, with the exception of an ironing board), and everything was clean. We had breakfast included which we had each morning. The surrounding neighbourhood is dodgy, and run down. That said, an Uber to the nice part of town costs around €10, so that negates the area a little bit. Overall happy with the actual hotel.

Not a good start. Then on Sunday our toilet would not flush and they had. I maintenance - so we had to switch rooms - pain. Why no maintence at a hotel that was very busy? When we checked in they had out luggage and when our room was ready the gentleman at desk said go ahead and get luggage and the lady at desk started yelling at me and then security came out from back and started yelling that we do not work here and cannot get luggage but then the First Gentleman came back and said wot theme get it. It was a shitshow and very unprofessional since we were told to get it. Not a good start to our vacation in Athens.

The hotel is nice, quiet and close to Omonia and Larissa Metro Stations (lines red and green). Breakfast is perfect for families with kids. I totally recommend to spend time in the lounge at 7th floor, it has a wonderful view of the city.

It was still very cold to swim in the pool. That was really pity. Staff in the reception and dinning area are very nice. All the public facilities and spaces are very good, but all the rooms are very old and need update. The carpet in the room really need change and clean, just so dirty. I can live with an old hotel room, but I worried about the location of the hotel when I was there. It located in a poor area in Athens. When I walk back from the tour bus station to the hotel, we can smell pees and rubbish on the street. Many of the buildings around the hotel are in very horrible conditions. Some of the streets are very dirty, and some people on the street were wired, some of them were digging through the rubbish bin.I felt very sorry to them and a bit nervous. I would not recommend hotel to people come with young kids for a holidays. You can definitely find somewhere nicer,. This hotel could be a perfect and cheap option for travellers who just stop by Athens for a night or two and use taxi as a transport. It is a cheap and not bad option, if you want to save some money. Mainly because the hotel itself is good. However, if you want a perfect holiday, you need to spend some more money and find else where. In the end of the day, you get what you paid for.

- drmithi75 (2/5): Pathetic - Appalling Service at Novotel Athens – Room 317 | Stay Dates: 10–12 April & 19 April 2025 If you’re considering Novotel Athens, think again. We stayed for 3 nights from 10th to 12th April and again on 19th April 2025 (Room 317), and the experience was nothing short of disgraceful. During our first stay over the Easter weekend, the hotel refused to provide any food for my 2.5-year-old toddler — even though everything outside was closed. We weren’t asking for anything elaborate — just mashed potatoes or boiled vegetable, as my son could only eat that .The staff showed zero empathy, zero effort, and absolutely no concern for a hungry child. They brushed us off with cold indifference, offering no support or solutions. This is not just bad service — it’s inhuman. For a hotel that claims to be “family-friendly,” this is completely unacceptable. Do not choose Novotel Athens. If you’re traveling with children, or simply expect basic decency and hospitality, avoid this hotel. There are far better places in Athens that understand the meaning of care and service.
- rupankars (2/5): Extremely Disappointed with the Service - We had a truly horrible experience during our recent stay. Despite traveling with a 2.5-year-old child, the hotel outright refused to provide basic boiled potatoes, citing it was “against hotel policy” as it wasn’t on the menu. This level of rigidity, especially when it comes to children’s needs, is unacceptable and something we’ve never faced in any hotel around the world. To make matters worse, the restaurant staff were extremely unprofessional. They were rude and easily offended if you tried to clarify or repeat your order — basic customer service was entirely missing. We’ve travelled extensively across the globe, and this has by far been one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve had. I would strongly advise against choosing this hotel, especially if you’re traveling for leisure or with young children. Absolutely not recommended.

- jesperbV5546HV (4/5): Novotel Athens - a two star hotel - We stayed at Novotel Athens in April 2025, booking a family room for four. Unfortunately, our experience did not meet our expectations. The rooms were quite small, which made the stay less comfortable than anticipated. We were assigned a room facing the street, and with the air conditioning not functioning, it was challenging to get a good night's sleep. The receptionist informed us that the air conditioning was not turned on before May, leaving us with the only options of sleeping in a room that felt like a sauna at 27 degrees or enduring the noise from traffic all night long. This made for an uncomfortable and restless stay. Additionally, the hotel’s location is in a less desirable part of town, with a noticeable presence of homeless individuals and a lot of abandoned buildings nearby. The swimming pool area was mainly closed during our 7 day stay. The staff mentioned various reasons—sickness among employees, seasonal closure, and repainting—though it was unclear which was accurate, especially since the hotel website states the pool is open from March. The pool ended up being open 2 days out of our 7 days. The pool area - when open - was however nice. Overall, our experience was disappointing and did not align with the expectations set by the Novotel brand. Instead of a four star hotel I would rate it a two star hotel - far below the usual standard of the Novotel brand.
- Vaishali (10/5): - Fab hotel with the kindest staff. Whilst the surrounding area was run down, we never felt unsafe. Fab cafe next door and 8 mins walk to the metro for a quick journey to the city centre. We return again.
- Anne (8/5): - The buildings around the hotel are very run down and when the taxi driver dropped us, he warned us to keep our belongings out of sight and not come back too late. There were a lot of “men” on the streets around the hotel. I was glad I was with my husband as I wouldn’t have felt safe travelling with other women there. After the initial disappointment that the pool and roof top restaurant/ bar were closed as out of season, and that our room did not have the desired view of the acropolis as advertised, we actually enjoyed our stay. The room was comfortable and clean.

Not in the best area of Athens but a short walk to miniature Greece and a friendly restaurant/cafe next door too.
