Guest Reviews
- Dov (10/5): - Bar and jam music, can smoke too. Ambiance and price very nice. Koenji wonderful for music, ambiance and party. Cheaper than other place in Tokyo. Go go ! Nothing
- Arnaud (10/5): - this hostel is the best in KOENJI, and the team is great !!
- Romain (1/5): - The location Don’t go there : the owner is very strange and entered my room in the middle of the night.
I stayed there for 5 nights. On the second night, I had drinks with the owner and some Japanese guests at the bar, which was actually really fun.
The next day, I didn’t see him. The day after, I greeted him, but to my surprise, he didn’t respond and seemed annoyed. I assumed it was because he was cleaning the hostel, which, by the way, was very dirty (lots of hair in the shower and humidity everywhere).
So I thought, “Okay, maybe he just doesn’t like cleaning and is in a bad mood.”
At 11 p.m., he was still cleaning and making a lot of noise next to my room. Since I hadn’t slept at all the night before due to jet lag, I politely asked him how much longer it would take. He just replied “cleaning” in an annoyed tone, so I understood he didn’t want to talk.
I went back to sleep, and this is where things got really bad.
I was alone in the room (actually, I was alone in the whole hostel!), and around 3 a.m., he entered the room without warning to change all the beds. This was extremely weird and made me feel very unsafe. I asked him what he was doing, and again, he just muttered something without really answering, almost aggressively.
It felt very intrusive and unsettling. I’ve never experienced anything like this before in a hostel.
The next morning, I immediately looked for another place and left as soon as possible. I lost money, but I just wanted to enjoy my holiday. At that point, it wasn’t even about sleep anymore, it was about feeling safe and respected as a guest.
Summary: It might go well if the owner is in a good mood (and if you can tolerate the lack of cleanliness), but it can quickly turn into a very uncomfortable experience if his mood changes, like it did for me.

- Moira (10/5): One of the best hostels I ever stayed in. The guys who work here are super fun and friendly.. definitely recommend and d - Loved everything about this place. Friendly relaxed welcoming fun atmosphere and awesome staff!
- Mickey (8/5): -

- Ayumi (6/5): - Had a room to myself which was great! Simple accommodation, great location, nice that there was a bar downstairs. Freedom to come and go as you like Quite dirty, people encouraged to keep shoes on in the bedroom and sinks always had hair in them. Never saw anyone in the bar but could've been the days I was there.
- Matti (10/5): -
- ayumi (5/5): -
- Richard (10/5): Excellent value, rough and ready hostel - Beds have all the essential features: plug sockets, personal light and curtains. Friendly vibe; good powerful shower; hairdryer; excellent location in Koenji. Great bar at ground level. Excellent value.
- dtgjuedrthsefgsaedfh (7/5): - Staff was helpful and accommodating. Everything was helpfully labelled. The first floor is a bar with a bunch of musical instruments set out for anyone who wants to have an impromptu jam session. On my final day, the hostel gave my bed to another person. I actually had to leave early anyway, so there wasn't an issue, but as I was gathering my things I noticed there was another person's stuff in my bed. Also, guests should be aware that the hostel has a very steep staircase, and there's 1 shower that's shared between all guests on all floors.
- Maya (10/5): - Exactly as described . I felt at peace here and in deep comfort .
- Sophia (5/5): Passable -
- Sjoerd (9/5): Superb - Hostel with great vibes in a lively area.
- Christophe (10/5): Perfect - Yoshi the Hostel owner is a very nice person. Thanks to him I have been introduced to many local people, had great nights and made new friends.
It was the best vacations I've never had.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Aud (4/5): - No bed bugs, and the price was like $30, so it was a good deal, but it was on the dirty side and the owner was a bit rude and unprofessional.
- Marie-lee (4/5): Disappointing -
- Yeo (1/5): Lackluster and unorganised - Good location, good vibes The owner’s lack of care and consideration of the customers wellbeing and helpfulness in answering our queries, in my case the hostel was overbooked and i was left without a bed for the night
- Filip (2/5): Very poor - Room was smelly, roof was leaking water at multiple locations.
The place was cold and humid. All my luggage and clothes got smelly.
Completely unlocked, anyone from the street could get in to the room anytime. No lockboxes either.
No staff, bar looks cool in the pictures, in reality it is not even open.
I don’t understand how this place can have good reviews. By far worst accommodation I have been in Japan.
- Burke (8/5): Very good -
- Jacob (1/5): Bad vibes - Dingy Stay away from the staff. Top tier rudeness
- Anibal (7/5): Good - Self-service literally, no staff for check-in nor check-out The location kinda sucks, lack of security makes it a little creepy
- Kevin (9/5): Superb -
- Rachel (10/5): A wonderful hotel , beautiful rooms and the location was great for restaurants, strolling and local vibe - Location location ! The rooms we're comfortable and had all the modern features
- Lucian (8/5): Very good -
- Marco (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (2/5): Find somewhere else - Close to the main cool areas of Koenji The location is amazing, Koenji has many vintage shops and many cool bars and restaurants and this place is great for getting there!
After that it was all pretty piss poor.
We had asked before if we can drop bags off before check in which we were told it was okay. We received no further instruction after that so we turned up on check in day and there was no one there. We called the number and the staff pretty rudely told us to self check-in.
We came back at 3pm to properly check and and there was still no staff. We waited almost an hour before someone turned up. The staff member in question turned up having already drank a fair bit of alcohol by the looks of it. We’ve been travelling all day and wanted to go to bed but there were no clean beds available.
I told the staff when we checked in there were no beds and he insisted there was two, when I told him there were none left he refused to move from where he was sitting drinking alcohol and to help remedy to situation.
My friend took the one bed that looked kind of clean and I left. The staff then changed all the beds and woke my friend up to tell her the bed she was in was dirty and not clean.
I had explained to him earlier there were no clean beds, he refused to believe me and now my friend was in a dirty bed and this is disgusting.
After cleaning beds the staff member left again and wasn’t around at all when the supposed bar downstairs was to open so I went somewhere else.
The vibe of the staff overall was that he didn’t want us to be there and trust me I never will go again.
The bedrooms were pretty dirty overall. Shoes are allowed all over. Where Amenities like towels are weren’t explained at all. The beds aren’t very comfortable and the room was cold.
The whole place stank of cigarettes. There is no area where you can relax or chat to others so you’re awkwardly standing in the hallway.
Wouldn’t recommend at all
- Daniel (7/5): Good -
- William (8/5): Cozy spot in a convenient location. Friendly owner, comfy beds and a great bar. - The owner was very kind and friendly, the bar downstairs was awesome too. Ended up arriving in time for a Xmas party, which was a blast.
The bed itself was comfy and clean, and I had plenty of privacy.
Overall, it was a very fun place to stay and great value for money, especially for a short trip.
Even better if you're a Muso, the owner has a collection of various instruments and he's more than happy to jam with you too. The shower/changing room was a little cramped but otherwise was perfectly adequate.
- Keaton (9/5): Superb -
- Adi (8/5): Very good - I like the strategic location in the Koenji area which is famous for its unique and vintage shops. I got a bunk bed on the top. It was a bit difficult to get in and out of bed. The pantry area has no heating so I was very cold.
- Alberto (8/5): Very good -
- Gunnar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adam (9/5): Superb - Amazing little hostel in every way, great location, great layout and great bar downstairs. The hallway is very cramped if you have luggage.
- Rajawadha (6/5): Pleasant - The room, bathroom and kitchen were good with facilities Needs more maintenance regarding cleanliness, there is no different kitchen sink and wash basin, you need to use the same for the washroom and kitchen.
- Ferris (8/5): Very good -
- Nicholas (8/5): Very good -
- Ibrahim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (7/5): Good -
- Harris (10/5): Fun and inclusive. Great music and a wonderful area to experience Tokyo. - The place is located in one of the best neighborhoods in Tokyo for foreigners and people looking to experience the hip side of Tokyo. The beds are great and bar is wonderful. Yoshi the owner is a super cool dude and excellent bartender. I met a lot of nice people here as well as in the area. That I didn’t stay long enough!
- Maksym (7/5): Good -
- James (7/5): Good -
- Vedrana (6/5): both sides of the coin - Koenji is one of my favourite districts in Tokyo and the shopping street can't be more charming and cosy - it is the reason I booked this place. The atmosphere in the hostel is very relaxed and easy going, complete freedom. Maintenance is OK (most of days) and even if there is only one shower area there was no waiting... it works. I'll start with this: I found someone sleeping in my bed one night - and all of my personal belongings on the floor! The owner woke everyone up in the middle of the night... shifting beds... some of my stuff was missing (later it was found)... It was unpleasant (nicely speaking).
And unfortunately, this is not the only confusing experience during my stay - firstly there was noone at the reception, then I was told to take any bed, then the following day I was told to move to another room (in a not very polite way). Meanwhile, there was a zero flexibility to change and adjust my booking...
I don't mean to be too negative, even knowing all this I may reconsider going back. But just wanted to make it clear that the management of this place is unfortunately very bad and that the communication with 'the manager' is almost impossible (even on rare occasions when he is there)
- Rory (1/5): Bad - Late check-in Out of the last 50 places I've stayed, this was the worst experience. Woken up by host at 1am for no reason. He was rude and very aggressive to a female visitor.
- May (8/5): Always stay here when I’m in Tokyo. Close to the train station and lots of vintage shopping. - Great location. Nothing
- Benjy (7/5): Good -
- Julee (9/5): convenient and economic! - super cute location, great for seeing areas outside of the bustle of the main metro tokyo area! comfy and spacious, this was my first dorm-room style, and a very positive one. :) other stayers were not abiding by the quiet hours, there was a man speaking english loudly on his phone at about 0200 for a solid 30minutes, but that certainly isn't fault of the property!
- Chadha (2/5): Very poor - Worst experience
- May (9/5): Clean and near the train station. The vibe in Koenji is always great. - Clean and near the train station. The vibe in Koenji is always great. Nothing
- Choompol (7/5): Good -
- Sonja (9/5): Superb - Great staff. Fun vibe.
- Kate (6/5): close to train stations, but low security. - The location was good, in between 2 convenient stations that directly serviced Tokyo station and Shinjuku station. The room was large, so there was lots of space to put your bags and items other than your bed. They provided free washing and drying, new face and body towels daily. Kitchen was small but had good facilities, with a microwave and toaster oven. There was minimal security- though a locking door for the hostel area was advertised, it was kept unlocked and accessible from the bar the entire time. The stairs were super steep, which wasn’t necessarily bad, just something to keep in mind if you have large bags. One thing to keep in mind, there are no lockers (as expected) but it would’ve been nice.
- Justine (9/5): Superb -
- Nicholas (10/5): Very affordable stay right in Koenji with an amazing host and hostel vibe! - The atmosphere is very enjoyable. Yoshi, the host, is very friendly and considerate. Amenities were perfect for what I was looking for (clean bed, clean showers and plenty of bathrooms). Very close to the station. Plenty of cool shops and restaurant/bars in Koenji. I plan to stay here again on my next visit! Nothing
- Uddhab (8/5): Very good -
- Mm (9/5): Will come back. Price is good and comfortable to sleep. - Location is great. Quiet and clean facility.
- Amelia (6/5): Pleasant -
- Varun (9/5): Superb -
- Lotusleaf (8/5): Very good - clean, comfortable. a bit expensive for the dormitory without security, no luggage deposit.
- Leo (10/5): Amazing - The atmosphere was full of good times with the owner hanging around the bar chatting with the locals. The rooms was fine I slept well. The bathrooms and showers where clean and very usable. I don't have much to say. I guess that I had to walk 10 minutes from the JR Station?
- Amy (10/5): Exceptional - It's in a very cosy residential area, not super touristic and gives off more of a homely hostel atmosphere. Koenji is a really cool area with lots of cool shops and bars, the downstairs being one of them. I really enjoyed my stay here and the staff were very friendly. It's a bit too far away from the centre so if you plan on going out at night time be prepared for figuring out how to get home.
- Pearl (9/5): Superb - Nice quiet neighborhood, near everything The stairs are very steep it’s hard to go up if you have big luggage
- Fedor (10/5): Fun and Accomodating Hostel - Wonderful atmosphere. All the staff are genuine and fun loving people. I felt really appreciated and catered to. A bit of a trek from central tokyo but it's really not a big deal because it's really close to 2 train lines
- Michael (6/5): Pleasant -
- Sylvain (8/5): Laid back, no frills hostels in the coolest part of town - This laid back backpackers hostel is great for a couple of days. You'll get a perfectly fine bed, very late checkout, easy self check-in and even a small communal fridge in the room in case you want to keep something close.
It's in the coolest place in Tokyo, Koenji, which in of itself is a MAJOR selling point. You'll have everything you could want nearby - restaurants, grocery stores, watering holes... Despite some complaints, the main station is just a brisk 10 minute walk. Hardly a big deal. Plus, you get to see the cool spots you'll want to check out later. Well, obviously this place isn't for everyone.
The hostel has these tiny stairs that aren't great for larger luggage, not to mention having to get them through the bar at the entrance.
The owner tales care of everything by himself AND runs a bar until late at night. Don't expect anyone to be there until the evening at least.
You won't really have a lot of options for keeping your stuff safe, so you have to keep valuables on your person.
- Cindy (10/5): Absolutely loved the room and location. - I love the decorations and set up of the female dorms. Very cute and cozy. Towels provided which is nice, and air conditioning in the rooms really helps during the summer. Bar in the first floor is quite nice too. Would definitely stay again ! The stairs were a little steep so careful after having a few drinks.
- Valeryia (8/5): Cool location close to Shinjuku. Enjoyed it! - Super chill atmosphere. You can use everything, like towels, toothbrushes, etc. Noisy. The location is full of bars so at night it was a bit noisy inside (until 2am)
- Melissa (5/5): Passable -
- Jose (8/5): Very good -
- Abi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roos (8/5): Great place with everything you need in a good location. - Everything you could need was there: towels, toothbrushes, a hairdryer, plates, cutlery, glasses, a microwave, cocktailshaker... The rooms were clean and had an AC. |They also had a small table and some stools. There were many great people in the hostel, but there was no common room for everyone to chill. So you would have to visit the other room, or disturb others when they might not want to talk. There was a bar downstairs, though, but personally I didn't have the money to sit there every night.
- Holly (9/5): Superb - I Loved the location and all rounder facilities at the hostel, some may find the walk a bit for but I thoroughly enjoyed the neighbourhood of Koenji. I enjoyed that the guests I stayed with were super respectful with sounds so it was a very comfortable stay for me. Nothing at all!
- Hugbear.nagano (7/5): Good -
- Luke (10/5): Best Hostel in Tokyo - Bro the vibe in this place is top notch. Bar at the entrance and good music (you can even chose if you want) Yoshi is the owner and a good dude.
Spent most of my nights drinking and smoking at the bar because there's always people there in the evening. Always fully booked so there's gonna be people you meet at the hostel. Dried flowers, herbs and hops hanging from the ceiling at the entrance and lights/mini discoball which gives the place a cozy vibe. 10/10 place
I've revisited this place multiple times this month.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
