• Michael (10/5): - This was my first stay at I@IP, and it was wonderful. Very welcoming, both staff and structure. Restful, pleasant, gently dignified, playfully so. Like a pleasant dream Perfect East Village location, with quick access to the City by foot, car, subway. And, everything in the room worked very well — electrical, plumbing, even the register heaters, which could be calibrated from off to hi.
• Verified traveler (6/5): - This is a charming hotel and the Elsie room on the first floor was like an apartment. Very high ceilings, non working fireplace. However , the rug and furniture were significantly stained and needed to be cleaned. Breakfast was included but when we arrived in dining room at 10:30 on New Year’s Day ... it was as if they were surprised to see us. They had to scramble to find us some toast, grapes and yogurt. Very strange. Staff friendly and nice , but not run well. This place could be amazing if it had some updating and furniture and rugs were cleaned/ replaced . Someone should take note .
• Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel is very cozy. The decor is eclectic antique, but somehow comes together for a nice atmosphere. The tea room is beautiful, but we only had breakfast there. Downstairs restaurant doesn't match the rest of the hotel and is nothing special, but there are lots of places nearby. Location is great next to Union Square. The only problem is the old radiator heating made it difficult to regulate the temperature, it was just trying different positions of the dial and waiting.
• Jodie (8/5): - The Inn at Irving Place is charming, and ideally located near Union Square, Gramercy Park, public transportation and restaurants. One feels at home, the staff is very friendly and helpful. The room was large and well,appointed. Breakfast is included in the room rate, which is quite competitive for Manhattan. But furnishings are getting worn (stiff locks, broken cabinet handles, creaky furniture), radiators are loud, plumbing iffy, and windows are definitely not soundproof. The property exudes considerable charm, but could use a refresh.
• Gary (10/5): Great Room, Noisy Area - The room was fantastic, but it faced a wine bar which got a bit noisy in around midnight to 1AM. They provide a white noise generator with the room. Recommend you use it.
• Elizabeth (10/5): - We loved our stay at the end and would definitely stay there again I suggested a few minor changes as we were checking out. The television is way too small for the size of the room. The lamp next to the bed had a short and kept going on and off. It was hard to regulate the temperature in the room we had to turn on the air conditioner even though it was in the 40s outside. Lol The best thing about the hotel is the service they really are the best. Very friendly and attentive staff. I don’t understand having two small refrigerators in the room with nothing inside them. It says they have a mini bar but I don’t think that is truthful. It was so wonderful to wake up to such a quiet atmosphere. Hotels, further uptown, don’t block out the noise. Having a free continental breakfast in the morning was a very nice treat. The breakfast room has such a European feel. Next time I will reserve for high tea but we were so busy eating out with several nice restaurants close by. My biggest complaint where the bed pillows. I have neck issues and they only offer hard pillows made from Pharm. They really should offer her the option of feather pillows like fine or Hotels, do on request. All in all, a wonderful experience!

• Judith E (6/5): Disappointing on a lot of levels - The condition of our room was very shabby. One of the sconces was coming out of the wall, 2 of the outlets in the bathroom did not work, the red flocked wallpaper was awful and the floor was in need of refinishing, one of the drawers in the dresser had the front coming off of it. But, it was clean and the staff was great and very helpful. Lots of different people at a front desk that was just a little better than a card table. I just got the impression that the owners are just hanging on. It's a tough business in all ways. But we liked the location even though there was a lot of construction of some type all around us.

This inn's lack of concern for their guests completely ruined our trip to NYC. Beware before you book with them. It's a bait and switch.
• michael (10/5): A happy surprise in a great location - Excellent choice. Gave up my family apartment around the corner when I left the city 18 months ago. Knew this place existed but had not been inside and took a chance. Very happily surprised. Only negative: Lighting was a little too limited. It is an authentically old townhouse and it’s in NYC so it is not as clean as a hermetically sealed space although housekeeping does a great job. I look forward to staying again.

I checked the mattress for bed bugs and it was fine actually looked brand new. The bathroom was very nice and the shower great. Had the breakfast which was adequate as I never eat cooked breakfast. Very handy for where we needed to be visiting family.
• Verified traveler (10/5): Charming B&B style hotel in midst of Manhattan... - Alphonso and the staff were prompt, helpful and courteous. The room (junior suite/king bed) was charming and it being a suite was surprisingly a bonus - nice to have a "living room" High tea was expensive but a nice experience with fun teas and delectable treats. A charming B&B style hotel in the middle of Manhattan was a treat - we would stay again.

• Robert (4/5): Taking charm too far - Excellent service, the building, and rooms were charming to a fault. The people were terrific and helpful. There are major flaws, though, that means that I cannot recommend it. First, that climb up two very long staircases on a hot day is no fun. I felt is strange that that was not made prominent on the website. Second, there was no water pressure. I mean none. It took a long time to fill up a glass of water. The shower was a dribble of warmish water, the bath couldn't have been filled up ins a day. Third, there was no desk. NO DESK. Fourth, the couch was vintage 1900 in every way. The upholstery was original and full of holes. The cushions had all crumbled away with age and so it was PAINFUL to sit on. There was no ottoman so the two other straight and aged chairs were not viable. Fifth, the air conditioning was out of control and did not respond to the provided remote. I had to open all the windows on a 90-degree day to make it slightly comfortable. Sixth, the lock fell out of the door when I turned it. Finally, there is no sign out front and so the Uber driver had trouble. On the other hand, the breakfast was good and charming. Will not stay there again, but may pop in for breakfast.

A very relaxing experience. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Felt that we were staying at a friend's home. Just lovely! Convenient to Union Square and Stay Town.
• MEC (10/5): - The Inn at Irving Place is probably better described as a bed and breakfast. It was originally a duplex townhouse when built around 1835, but around 20 years ago it was converted into a 12 room "hotel". The place is quite charming and well kept. We enjoyed our stay very much. Outside, there is no sign, making the place attractive to folks like celebrities who want a night in the city without being noticed. The lack of a sign threw us off a bit, but we figured it out. If you visit, just look for 56 Irving Place. There is a set of stairs that lead to the door, which makes the Inn as far as I can tell, not handicap accessible. We saw a show at the Irving Plaza which is just two blocks away, making the Inn a great choice. Also, the Union Square subway station is only about five blocks away. If your going to be in the neighborhood you should really consider staying at the Inn.
• A.M.C. (10/5): - The Inn at Irving Place is clean, comfortable and charming. The rooms are well appointed and the staff are friendly and helpful. I received professional, accommodating service from start to finish. Had a most relaxing stay. Additional perks: Lady Mendl's Tea Salon, where breakfast is served, is absolutely delightful, and I highly recommend trying the cocktails at the Cibar Lounge next door.

If negotiating stairs are an issue, then go for the W, or at least make sure you get a room on the second floor, and not the third.

• Sarah (6/5): So So - My stay at the Inn was so so. When I got there I found no one to check me in and spent a good 10 minutes searching for someone. I finally had to go back o the kitchen to ask them for help. When someone did appear they were on their cell phone and still didn't attend to me for another couple of minutes after which they were quite rude. The room was tidy but the antique furniture desperately needs reupholstering. The sheets and towels were excellent and the bathroom was immaculate so they gain points there. However there was a bag of laundry sitting outside my room for 36 hours which was a bit odd. The rest of the staff were very kind and helpful, my room was facing the street so not very quiet and I wish they had blackout curtains instead of shutters, but that is a preference. There are no instructions as to how to work their very complicated TV set up but I stumbled my way through. All in all, I'd say for the 2 days that I spent, it was adequate but not worth the rate I paid. Gramercy is a delight so perhaps its more about location than luxe.

• Linda (6/5): A matter of taste - The staff was friendly and very accommodating, and the room was quite spacious for a NY hotel. The room was furnished with lovely antiques. I would describe them and the hotel as elegant but worn. If you are looking for something with atmosphere, the Inn could be your place. It feels like stepping back in time. I had two issues that would likely keep me from returning, however. The noise from the street was quite loud in my room, and the second morning of my stay I had no hot water for a shower. Even after 5 minutes, the best I achieved was less than lukewarm.

• lawrence (8/5): Unique Experience - Note of Preparation - This is a unique NY experience to stay in an antique setting with soaring ceilings, intricate woodwork, and old-world design. It's a brownstone mansion so expect few modern conveniences (no elevator, slow internet etc) For better or for worse (you choose!), The Inn at Irvington is the antithesis of the W Hotel model as the room is huge, craftsman furniture, tiffany light fixtures, and you'll have a room unlike any other in the hotel. My only complaints are the slow internet and getting the shower temp just right took some getting used to! Other than that, I'll be back.

• Richard (10/5): So charming! - What a charming and lovely bed and breakfast in the heart of New York City! The Inn is a Victorian style brownstone with several guest rooms and attached dining area and separate bar/lounge. Our room was large with attached bathroom and walk-in closet with a small butlers pantry enclosed. The king sized 4-poster bed was comfortable and an additional sitting area was large enough for a small couch, two chairs, coffee table and desk. The service was exceptionally friendly. Breakfast was coffee and pastries and fruit in the most charming dining room. The biggest drawback to the inn is the several steep steps at the entrance, and lack of elevators to the rooms. If this is not a concern for you, check out my new favorite hotel in NYC!

• Mac (10/5): Wonderful hotel in the perfect neighborhood - This was the best stay in New York we ever had. We loved everything about this hotel, and we will be back on our next trip. The staff were great! Very quiet. No elevator, but they were more than happy to carry our bags up and down. It is two old brownstones decorated with antiques. Breakfast until 11:00 am and checkout at noon. Loved it!

• Verified traveler (6/5): Fine, but not as expected - Perfectly nice place, but I was anticipating more. Arrived at night. No lighting or sign of any kind to help you understand you are at the Inn. Taxi drove up and down the street trying to find. Finally I got out. Walked right past it and then found a number, walked back and walked up brownstone stairs with bags, grateful this was a good guess. Carpeting walk up stairs is worn and needs replacement. Room was large and good but very dimly lit. Because I worked through an intermediary (Expedia) I was given a room on the street, level 2. Noisy. Bed was very firm and my only option was a very heavy quilt which seemed appropriate for winter, not for summer when ac was on. Breakfast very nice in the morning.
• BP (8/5): Quaint - Quaint and comfortable hotel but not for those who want modern looks and conveniences. Minor issues with the chest of drawers and toilet but my son and I fared quite well in the junior suite. Quiet location, at least when we were there last month (July).
• Edward (8/5): Quaint hotel. No elevator - Nice old hotel (1930's era). Very clean and in decent repair but somewhat worn. Very classy. Reminds me a lot of the pensionnes I stayed in in Italy. NO ELEVATOR. Very steep stairs.

• Verified traveler (10/5): What a beuatiful hotel! - My husband and I stayed here for a night for a wedding we were attending near Grammercy Park. We were greeted with champagne and afternoon cookies when we checked in. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. The continental breakfast in the tea room was also a wonderful experience.
• Charles (8/5): The absolute opposite of a Holiday Inn. - An antique-filled twin brownstone, off Union Square. Perhaps a little quirky for some tastes (not mine), and the lack of a lift might deter the halt and lame.

• Verified traveler (10/5): Will visit again - Away from (most) of the noise and buzz of the city, this charming inn (8 rooms -- building feels larger and common areas are spacious) offered peaceful charm and a retreat from the pace and constant churn of NYC. Continental breakfast served. I don't like that type of breakfast, but the dining room is so inviting it was hard to resist at least having some tea.
• Mary (8/5): A place you want to go back to - Nice oasis in the busy Union Square neighborhood. Service at Inn is excellent. The room was comfortable with nice clean large bathroom.
• Sarah (8/5): Quaint boutique hotel - This bed and breakfast is unique in that it it like stepping back in time. Spacious accommodations, amazing staff. But be prepared-it is a walk up. There are lots of steps to get to the third floor. Antiques abound and are lovely, but I would have preferred that they would have been reupholstered. The settee felt 100 years old! Great location, nice breakfast. Charming, but don't go if you want modern.
• Terry (8/5): Interesting Union Square Inn - It was a perfect location near Union Square for visiting our daughter. The room, a suite, was dark but very quiet, facing an inner courtyard. It was a bit funky, definitely individually decorated. Very clean. The service was excellent. Alphonse, Andrew and Jose were delightful and so helpful, bordering on doting!
• Kim (8/5): - Pros: Loved the location. The Tea Room was a perfect addition along with the Basement Bar. The room was cute - very Victorian. Cons: The wifi didn't work the best.
• Andrea (10/5): Highly Recommended - I got my parents a night at the Inn at Irving Place. I was EXTREMELY pleased. The room was spacious and big. The bathroom was huge for New York City standards. The staff was very very pleasant and helpful. The tea room is great. The continental breakfast was just what we needed to get the day started. Irving Place is a wonderful street with a lot of great restaurants and close to Union Square. I highly recommend this hotel.

• karen (10/5): - lovely quiet hotel a couple blocks from Union Square. Lots of good restaurants nearby. It is more a B&B than a hotel; very few rooms. Beautiful antique furniture in first floor tea, reception room and breakfast rooms. Large guest rooms also with true antiques- unmatched, reupholstered, very comfortable and beautiful. Non working fireplace. Large dresser and closet. Very nice big bathroom with tub and shower, nice amenities including bathrobes. Nice continental breakfast with good coffee. Very friendly and helpful staff. My new favorite place to stay in NYC. Not for those who like brand new fancy rooms and linens with everything the same; this is for those who like character and the feel of an elegant B&B.

• Kenn (10/5): - Traditionally furnished rooms in a great neighborhood close to dining, shopping and the subway. Staff was unfailingly helpful and warm. Inn has no elevators and pretty steep stairs so those with mobility issues need not apply. the rest can consider it free exercise.
• Michelle (10/5): Beautifully romantic.... - This hotel is truly the closest thing to actually stepping back in time and staying in someone's home. It's two 1834 townhomes joined together in the most beautiful of ways. From the lack of signage (because no one has a sign on their front door, right?) to the sweeping staircases inside, this hotel is unique in so many ways. Lady Mendl's Tea Salon is perfectly amazing and could not be more suited for the "dining area" in such an incredible space. The room space is massive considering you're in NYC....and the old-fashioned key adds another element of charm. However, because the rooms are with wood floors and high ceilings, they are very noisy. Every movement from the people on the 3rd floor above us could be heard as if they were in our room. We will definitely plan on returning, but will request a room on the 3rd floor and in the back. This hotel is truly "a find"!!!!

• Nancy (10/5): An Amazing Hotel and an Amazing Experience - Though I am not, I probably sound like I am a friend or relative of the owner(!) with all of my superlatives. But, here goes. I am a business traveller and have stayed in far too many okay hotels that I even remember. But, I was blown away by The Inn at Irving Place -- a well kept secret in the heart of old New York. From the moment I entered the building, it was a unique and amazing experience. High Tea in the downstairs dining room, a gratis glass of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries to celebrate my arrival. The most beautiful and unique room that I have seen in ever-so-long. I even had some of my business associates come up to visits, and they were equally impressed. The service was nothing less than impeccable -- immediate and with a friendly reception. The Inn at Irving Place is my new go-to place in Manhattan.
• Verified traveler (10/5): Very relaxing hotel with great rooms - My wife and I loved this place and we loved the proximity to union square and many fun things to do. The room was comfortable and so quiet. This was a much more relaxing experience than many of the other times we have visited NYC.

• Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel - Nice hotel close to where I had to be in the morning. Bed was comfortable, antique furniture filled the room. Only complaint was they couldn't shut their heat off. They did have an air conditioner in the window that cooled the room down decently.

• Michelle (10/5): Quaint and comfortable B&B - Overall, this was a perfect home base for a trip to the Big Apple. It felt like I was staying at a friend's home but with all of the comforts of a high end hotel. Breakfast was simple but delicious and the staff was friendly and courteous. It truly felt like they wanted you to fully enjoy your stay. I will definitely stay here the next time I'm in the city.

• Jerry (10/5): Great NYC stay - First time guess in this small, 12 room, facility and we could not have been happier. We are frequent visitors to NYC and like to explore options and were pleasantly surprised by this gem.
• amanda (8/5): Fairy tale hotel in the excitementof the NYC - I think the room and place was beyond any expectation on the website...it was so beautiful, and special, the most beautiful place I've ever stayed in NYC, like upscale bohemian, old style NYC Gramercy hotel style and the staff was really friendly and helpful, small, but accommodating and professional. The location also was wonderful, for nearly everything. It was great to walk to the East Village, Chelsea, go gallery hopping and get to know all the neighborhoods in the process. The only thing that I wish was available was a place within the hotel to get an after dinner drink, or snack. The lower level bar was really loud and boisterous, and I was a woman travelling alone, and it wasn't really my scene, and I didn't want to venture far in the later evening.
