- tuotuo (10/5): A Perfect Stay - We have stayed at the Sofitel several times before. To be honest, we encountered minor issues of one kind or another every time. Though they were only small problems, they kept our stays from being perfect. However, Sofitel is such an elegant hotel that we always end up coming back.We checked into the Sofitel again on the final day of our trip to Vietnam this May, and this stay turned out to be absolutely flawless. Our butler, Mikey, had already arranged all the details of our stay via WhatsApp well before our arrival. Since we were traveling with an 86-year-old, he made the check-in process as smooth and hassle-free as possible so we could rest as soon as possible. Even in the evening, he proactively checked in with us to see if we needed any assistance. The doormen stationed at the two main gates were incredibly attentive and professional. The moment we got out of the car, they quickly arranged a wheelchair for us and took full care of our luggage without us having to worry about a thing. Everything was handled in perfect order. We stayed in the Heritage Wing this time. It was our first time staying in this section. Both the rooms and the entire building blend modern facilities with old-world charm. What’s more, the highlight of our stay — Le Club Bar — is also located right here. Speaking of Le Club Bar, let’s start with the afternoon tea. Mr. Thach took excellent care of us. He was incredibly polite, thoughtful and professional. After the perfect afternoon tea, we could hardly wait to come back for evening cocktails. At the evening cocktail hour, we met the lovely Ngoc and the charming Tuan. They were so warm and approachable that we felt like we were with old friends we’d known for years, while remaining impeccably professional at the same time. Ngoc noticed every little need we had and never let our glasses stay empty. The cocktails Tuan made were absolutely stunning. We especially loved how he ingeniously incorporated Vietnamese flavors into the recipes.Together with Mr Thach, they gave us the happiest happy hour. The experience was so wonderful that we simply must return here in the evening for a nightcap or two. The three of them once again made us feel as though we were being looked after in a friend’s home. I’ve said “perfect” far too many times, but it truly is the only word that can describe this stay. This wasn’t just a job done perfectly. It was perfect passion. Perfect professionalism. Perfect hospitality.

The property is truly luxurious, and what made our experience even more special was the exceptional hospitality and warmth of the staff. As vegetarians, we were especially touched by the care taken by the restaurant team. They went out of their way to understand our dietary preferences, explain suitable dishes, and customise meals whenever required. Housekeeping service was excellent throughout our stay. We would also like to specially mention Viet from the concierge team, who was extremely helpful and organised a wonderful trip for us to Ninh Binh. A special thanks as well to Tan at the reception for the personal care and attention extended to us. Overall, it was a fantastic stay, and we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Hanoi.

Beautiful decor throughout and very friendly and polite staff. Nothing is too much trouble. It’s a real refuge from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi. Great pool bar for drinks and food in the evening after a day of sightseeing. Will definitely stay here again and would highly recommend this hotel.

It is packed full of character with numerous restaurants and bars that you just want to linger in. The Bamboo bar provides atmospheric drinking and dining as does the Spice Garden. - Barbara (10/5): Memorable. - The breakfast was the most wonderful selection of food gorgeously presented in the most lovely room. We loved our cocktails in the bamboo bar. In a charming location in the french quarter, close to wonderful shopping (very high end). There are two hotel buildings- one one in the back is nice but basic (our son stayed there). We asked to be moved to the other buildings and paid $300 US dollars more, but it was well worth it. We then received breakfast, tea and cocktails with a 3 tier plate of appetizers included in the price of our room. Well worth it!

- MrsCara34 (10/5): A fabulous hotel - A fabulous hotel in a great location! I do think that the place that you stay is directly linked to how much you enjoy a city, and we loved Hanoi! I'm so pleased that I picked this hotel as our experience of Hanoi was completely different from that of friends who have previously visited and who stayed deep in the hustle and bustle of the old quarter on the other side of the lake. This side, whilst very, very easily walkable to the madness of the little old quarter streets, is much calmer, with wide boulevards and less chaos. Many streets here become walking streets at night, and it is a pleasure to stroll out from the hotel and wander around the lake, watching (and sometimes joining!) the pop-up Zumba, ballroom dancing and disco without the worry of a moped taking you out! The hotel is pristine and it is also a huge bonus to have the tranquility of the inner courtyard and pool to retreat to after a busy morning. Do stay on the executive floors if you can stretch to it - gorgeous Dipytique toiletries and the 7th floor lounge is an oasis of calm with delicious a la carte breakfast service and buffet style afternoon tea and evening canapés plus a very good drinks and cocktail list. My only 'room for improvement' feedback would be to vary up the canapés a bit more (although the smoked tuna slices which were available every night were sublime). The staff in the lounge are such a credit to the hotel - absolutely on top of their game in terms of service, but also in terms of personality and helpfulness. Special mentions for the delightful Gian who looked after us so well, was a pleasure to chat to and who gave great advice on shopping and where to find what we wanted. Also to Tommy who has a fabulous personality and makes an excellent cocktail! And general thanks to all of the Majordomes, front row staff and the staff behind the scenes who quietly make this hotel operate like clockwork. PS don't forget to book on the hotel history tour, including the trip to the underground bunker.

- romanb688 (10/5): The Metropole-There Is No Alternative - Our three night stay at The Metropole was excellent in every respect. We had stayed at another Sofitel Legend hotel (in Panama City) and had very high expectations for our stay. The Metropole in Hanoi met our expectations in every respect and made for a beautiful introduction to Vietnam. Our welcome started with the optional airport transfer in a very comfortable Mercedes S Class sedan. In advance of our travel, the hotel provided us with precise instructions on where to meet our driver. A hotel representative was waiting for us at the given location just outside the arrivals terminal and introduced us to our driver who then took us to the hotel. While this was the most expensive hotel transfer we had in Vietnam, it was well worth it for how effortless and comfortable it made our late night arrival after a long trip. The 125-year old hotel is in a beautiful and calm location in the center of Hanoi, steps from the Opera and the Hoan Kiem Lake, Old Town and so many other sights. The hotel is perfectly restored and maintained and, because it has two separate entrances and lobbies for the two distinct wings (Heritage and Opera), feels very intimate and comfortable despite its size. We stayed in the historic Heritage Wing in a Grand King room. The room was spacious and well-appointed and had a large bathroom. Although our windows faced the street, the windows provided complete sound insulation and the room, with its very comfortable bed and soft bedding provided a serene environment for sound rest. The many amenities included two robes per person, one silk-for use in the room and one cotton-for the spa and pool, a clothes steamer, beautiful drinks and coffee/tea bar, plenty of bottled water, and many electrical outlets, which-like all the ones we encountered in Vietnam-can be used with both the US and EU plugs. The next morning our butler told us about the events at the hotel and made our reservations for the historic tour of the property and the morning yoga. She also made our dinner reservations at Spice Garden, the hotel’s Vietnamese cuisine restaurant, and Angelina’s, the bistro/bar. During our stay we enjoyed the extensive, tasty and healthy breakfast which can be taken in the Club or outside by the pool. We also enjoyed happy hour snacks and drinks in the open air Bamboo Bar, and excellent dinners on the terrace at Spice Garden and at Angelina’s. We also took part in the complimentary morning yoga on the green roof of the Club and shopped in the hotel’s boutique which has beautiful local handmade products, such as lacquered trays. Of special note is the historic tour in the hotel which is very well worth attending. The kind guide gave us an overview of the history of Vietnam from the time of the hotel’s founding, showed us the photo exhibit memorializing noteworthy visitors from Ho Chi Minh through royalty, presidents, prime ministers, and business leaders to artists and stars. The tour also included a visit to the bunker (under the Bamboo Bar) where Jane Fonda and Joan Baez sheltered during the American War in Vietnam. After walking around Hanoi and absorbing all the energy of this magical city, it felt incredibly comforting to step into the world of The Metropole and relax in the care of its incredibly warm and welcoming staff. We thank all the staff of the hotel for making our stay so comfortable and memorable. During our time in Hanoi, I did not see another location or hotel where I would rather be and I give this hotel my highest recommendation.

Un whatsapp qui est imprécis, on ne reçoit que des coeurs en retour et au final rien n'est bien organisé et sûr ! je prends la conciergerie et au final je réserve restaurant / visite bunker... et il faut toujours revalider ! je suis venu 2 fois avec une interruption de 2 jours et j'ai dû refaire le check in alors qu'on m'avait dit en partant que que ne serait pas nécessaire ... que les valises que j'ai laissé seraient dans la chambre ...et au final rien... Ensuite j'ai libéré la chambre et on me dit pas de problème pour régler à 19h quand je pars et ensuite cela a posé des problèmes aux restaurants / bars où j'étais ... bref et ça n'est qu'une infime partie des disfonctionnements ...pas à la hauteur du standing ! et pour finir le niveau d'anglais est assez catastrophique (sauf les bagagistes qui sont les meilleurs en anglais)

- Alexa (10/5): You deserve a slice of Heaven in Hanoi - Gorgeous property located in a quieter area of Hanoi. The hotel is a throwback to elegance; staff are professionals through and through, comfortable rooms well stocked with high end amenities, lush floral decorations throughout and thoughtful and much appreciated personal touches that spell “welcome and enjoy.” I might add we are not usually given to booking high end hotels on vacation but we decided to splurge and treat ourselves to several days of luxury for our 30th wedding anniversary vacation. Going out and exploring a city is our focus and on this trip, it was glorious to come back from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi and unwind on the property. There wasn’t a thing we could mention.

- alanwB4435QJ (4/5): Extremely underwhelming stay, would not come again - Although the hotel works hard to deliver a French colonial experience to honor the historic traditions of the Metropole (Butlers/majordomes wear traditional garb or tails, staff say “bonjour” and “bonsoir”), the end result is haughtiness with a cheap veneer rather than historical elegance. The hotel clearly caters towards a particular type, and perhaps class, of people. For the price we paid, the service, facilities, and food all fell far short from our expectations, and we would advise travellers to stay in other hotels at much better price with better service. Firstly, our check-in experience was rushed and confusing. After arriving from our airport transfer, we met a butler (who was NOT the butler we had been communicating with on WhatsApp prior to arrival), who rushed us into the elevator to complete our check-in process in our room. However, our room (as described below) was so cramped that we could not even all be seated to complete the check-in process. We were left standing awkwardly by the open door to the room. We did not receive welcome drinks. The butler rushed through his explanations and, after swiping our credit card for incidentals, promptly left. We left the check-in process feeling rushed and confused, with very little information about the role of the butler and what was included with the Club Metropole status, and had to confirm and clarify numerous times with the staff. What was especially frustrating is that we saw many other parties during our stay having a relaxed, seated, check-in process with welcome drinks in the lobby with a butler. We wondered whether our appearance as two young travellers may have changed the level of service we received. Regarding the butler service, we met/communicated with at least 6 butlers over the course of our 3 day stay. However, the service we received from them was far from personal or thoughtful. What we understood is that the entire team of butlers support the guests, but that there is no individual butler assigned to each room. This made the whole service feel impersonal and removed - although we could reach out to the service by WhatsApp, we had no idea who was on the other end. We booked an Opera Wing Grand Premium King Room with Metropole Club lounge benefits, the hotel’s signature room according to the hotel. The room, although sized as advertised, feels very cramped with only a single chair at the desk and a small chaise longue and hardly anywhere to sit. For two people, we brought a single checked suitcase, and opening that one suitcase on a bench already made the room feel much smaller. The bathroom is connected by double entrances (without doors - only sashes) to the bedroom, and encloses a diagonally oriented tub, a double vanity and adjoining rain shower. We didn’t receive turn-down service until after 8:30pm the first night, and were already preparing for bed when staff arrived. Importantly, the Opera Wing Grand Premium Room overlooks the street and was quite loud, even from the 6th floor. There’s also a building covered with LEDs across the road that spills light into the room at night. The breakfast was expansive and at convenient hours (6-10:30am). Breakfast was served across three locations (Le Club Bar, Spice Garden (their Vietnamese restaurant) and in the Metropole Lounge (for those with benefits). Diners can choose from Vietnamese options including Pho (beef or chicken in addition to a daily rotating special), Bahn Cuon or other types of steamed rice options, in addition to salads, fruit, yogurt, various juices and smoothies, an egg station and pastries. For beverages, we were also able to order egg and Vietnamese coffee. Despite the expansive options, the quality of the food was mediocre and left much to be desired. For a French-inspired hotel, the pastries were very doughy and stodgy rather than flaky. We also observed flies crawling over the food in both the Spice Garden and in Le Club on two separate occasions, along with many mosquitos in the dining areas. Despite the lacklustre food, the service was extremely attentive and rapid. The online information offered by the hotel does not comprehensively cover the benefits offered by Club Metropole benefits, nor the difference between the Opera (newer wing) and Heritage (older historical wing). The stay would be improved with clearer explanation. We attended the tea time (3-4:30pm) and happy hours (5-7pm) in the Metropole Lounge, complementary with the rooms club benefits. Afternoon tea consisted of a buffet of either small pastries, sandwiches and fruit, while happy hour consisted of canapés, smoked fish, fruits and a few desserts. The drinks are complimentary (a small plus), and for happy hour you have a choice of several wines, liquors and mixed drinks. The servers in the lounge were excellent and attentive; however, the quality of food was again unremarkable. While imperfections/inconsistencies may arise at any hotel, it’s often how the hotel responds that distinguishes a good from a great hotel. We voiced our concerns to the ‘Majordome’ WhatsApp chat, and we were met with a response later from the head butler and two other butlers, Hugh and Mikey. We switched rooms, but there were additional problems in the next: the shower leaked creating a massive slippery puddle covering the floor, the sink stopper was stuck closed, etc. The following evening at the Club Metropole, the butler Mikey was meeting with guests at all the tables while we were there but he did not speak to us. One unique aspect of staying at the hotel is the chance to visit the bunker located beneath the Bamboo Bar. We booked a 5pm tour but had a very difficult time hearing and understanding the guide given the noise in the lobby due to a large tour group checking in. Overall we cannot recommend this hotel. We were confused by the high online ratings throughout our stay as the service, facilities, and food all fell below our expectations given the high price. Coming from other excellent stays at in Vietnam during this trip really made the contrast at this hotel apparent. At this price point, you’re paying for the history and name, not for the service, food, or facilities.

- heathers141 (10/5): Great Stay in Hanoi - We stayed at the Sofitel Legend metropole for 3 nights as part of a pre-cruise land package with Amawaterways. The hotel is fantastic with large comfortable rooms and is within walking distance to Old Town Hanoi. We loved the history of the hotel (our room was at one point the Finnish Embassy during the Vietnam War ) and you can tour an underground bunker. The bathrooms are spacious and we had a large walk-in shower. The staff is wonderful taking time to answer numerous questions and making recommendations for local restaurants within walking distance. The breakfast buffet was a great combination of Vietnamese and western options. We also greatly enjoyed the outdoor bar, enjoying a cocktail by the pool. The fitness center is well equipped. I would highly recommend this hotel.

- OWHKG2016 (10/5): simply lovely - We stayed a night here during Tet in the Grand premium room in the opera wing. Having stayed at the heritage wing and capella across the suite before, I was a bit worried about the new wing would feel less special wing somehow, but I was glad to be proven totally wrong. From the moment we stepped out of the airport, we were whisked to the new hotel limousine and everything was perfect. We loved the cookies provided in the car. The team was there to welcome us when we got to the hotel, and check in was done in room efficiently. We loved the attention to details in the room and all the small touches, including snacks, drinks and a gift which you can choose from the boutique. F&B and service was fantastic. Next time when we come back to Hanoi, despite Capella being a near perfect hotel, I will probably pick Sofitel given the better sleep quality in the quietness of the courtyard facing rooms.

- 82floriann (10/5): Excellent stay at the Metropole! - Stayed at the Metropole for three nights with a friend and it was honestly one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had. Huge thanks to Bách and Lily for the warm welcome—they made us feel at home the second we walked in. We had the Club benefits and they were totally worth it. The personalized attention from Giang, Tommi, and Ann really made the stay feel special. The rooms were great and super clean, but what I appreciated most was how fast they handled any issues or discrepancies that came up. I managed to squeeze in some time at the gym (modern gear, very clean) and the heated pool, which was the perfect way to wind down after being out in the city all day. We also spent a few evenings at Angelina (bar); Oanh, Ginny, and Nhàn took such good care of us there. I actually came down with a pretty bad cough during the trip, and they went totally above and beyond to make sure I was okay. Stella from the butler team was incredible—she basically anticipated everything we needed before we even asked. Also, Van Anh and Nhung at the restaurant provided some of the best service I’ve seen (definitely hitting those Forbes standards). It’s rare to find a place where the staff genuinely seems to care this much. If you're visiting the city, stay here. I’m definitely coming back.

Hang, Dunz, Duc - her fabulous team - made sure we had the most charming experience- friendly efficient service, generous hospitality, lovely wines and snacks and overall, fantastic care! The Sofitel Metropole is a gorgeous hotel, and time in the Bamboo Bar is time well spent.

- cjamesg425 (10/5): Exceptional Hotel Experience - This is top 5 hotels I've stayed at throughout the years. Every aspect of this hotel is beautiful. The rooms are thoughtfully designed with high quality fixtures, the bed is supremely comfortable, the outlook to the courtyard from the room so lovely during the day and evening with the lights on the lawn area. I had communicated quite a bit with front desk before arrival and we were upgraded through my Accor Explorer/ Gold membership to a larger room which was very comfortable. The food is exceptional from the buffet style breakfast, yummy egg coffees, dinner, cocktails, Michelin star restaurant, the service everywhere is of a very high standard, every aspect of this hotel is exceptional. The pool area is so beautifully presented every day with comfy sunbeds, plenty of towels, good service and a relaxed outdoor bar and cafe area. The gym while small has everything you need for a decent workout. The location is excellent for exploring the city. The tour is also worth mentioning as it gives you a good history lesson on the hotel and what the hotel has been through. We loved this hotel and if I was ever in Hanoi again I would absolutely stay here. Already recommending to our friends as it was the highlight of our Vietnam trip. Thank you Sofitel Metropole for such a fabulous stay.

- PingEye2 (10/5): Friendliest Staff/Excellent Stay - I can’t give enough kudos to the Metropole and its staff. Let’s start with the staff. They are the friendliest and most helpful of any hotel we’ve ever visited. They answered every inquiry and went out of their way to make us feel appreciated. When we couldn’t locate our guide which we had booked from an outside agent, the receptionist dialed the agency and communicated with them to locate our guide. The restaurant staff is equally friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet is amazing including both regional and local options. The breakfast Pho bar was a real winner. Upon our arrival at 11:00PM after a Long day of travel, we were told we’d been upgraded to a suite! The butler accompanied us to our room and answered all our questions. My wife used the spa for a facial and was very impressed. Staff excellent as well as the facial. The location is excellent with the Hoan Kiem Lake and Old Temple a short walk away. Hotel is incredibly clean and the pool is also wonderfully located in the central courtyard. We took the historical tour of the hotel, including bomb shelter which provides great information on the 125 year history of the hotel. I’d highly recommend the Metropole for your stay in Hanoi.

I booked an OPERA WING, GRAND PREMIUM ROOM WITH CLUB LOUNGE BENEFITS, KING BED. The service level was amazing, from the personal greeting by your Butler to the ability to just message on whatsapp for anything you needed throughout your stay. The ladies in the club lounge were simply wonderful, im sorry i cant remember their names but all of them were exceptionally attentive, they even remembered what i liked to drink and when i returned for my second stay they even remembered me then, they were by far outstanding and i hope they get recognised frequently for this! I would very much recommend this hotel and recommend upgrading for club access. I should also add the pool area and newly renovated pool bar were also wonderful, just a shame i didn't get to enjoy it more as the weather was a little on the rainy side.# I will defo come back to this hotel when i visit Hanoi again.

- Claudia (10/5): Legendary stay - This is indeed a legendary place, you feel it everywhere, from the entrance to the rooms to the restaurants, with all the pictures of the famous people that have stayed there. We had the most beautiful two nights at the hotel. So well located in the French quarter, much quieter than the old town but really close to every thing. Highly recommended. Buffle breakfast is expensive and noisy but okay. We preferred the à la carte option which was more than enough. You can have it at the bamboo bar which is quieter.
