Guest Reviews
- 397amird (2/5): Formal Complaint: Ruined 40th Birthday Celebration - Demand for Resolution - To the Management of Élysée's Hotel & Spa,
We are writing this review with profound disappointment to detail the complete failure of your establishment in delivering the premium experience we paid for, which resulted in the ruin of my daughter’s 40th birthday celebration on Saturday, October 18th. This formal complaint follows an entirely insufficient phone call from your team that offered no solution, no genuine apology, and no action.
Our expectation for a significant family milestone was met with an experience that was unprofessional, medically concerning, and financially exploitative.
The specific failures were egregious:
1. Dismissive and Incompetent Reception: We were immediately made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment we arrived, setting a negative tone for the entire day.
2. Unprofessional and Harmful Spa Treatment: The so-called "massage" was a rudimentary application of oil and sugar that caused an uncomfortable, allergic skin reaction. This is not a luxury treatment; it is a neglect of basic professional standards.
3. Exploitative Billing Practices: The mandatory 20% gratuity added to a bill for subpar and rude service is an insult. It forces guests to subsidize their own dissatisfaction, revealing a policy that prioritizes profit over customer experience.
4. Neglect of a Special Occasion and Poor Service: Despite clear communication of our celebratory purpose, it was entirely ignored. The restaurant service was disorganized, with a salad served inexplicably late alongside the main course.
5. Predatory Waiver: The most alarming practice was being forced to sign a document waiving our right to legal action over poor service. This is not standard practice; it is an admission of guilt and a preemptive strategy to avoid accountability for the low quality you knowingly deliver.
The subsequent lack of a meaningful response confirms that our unsatisfactory experience is not an anomaly but a direct result of your management's culture. The insensitive staff member in question appears to face no consequences, and the hotel continues to profit from these deceptive practices.
Therefore, a simple apology is no longer sufficient. We formally demand:
1. A full refund of all charges incurred for the spa and restaurant services on October 18th.
2. Additional compensation for the complete ruin of a once-in-a-lifetime celebration and the distress caused.
We expect a written response within 48 hours detailing your plan to resolve this matter. Failure to address this appropriately will leave us no choice but to escalate this complaint to the New York State Department of Consumer Protection, the Better Business Bureau, and pursue a chargeback through our credit card company, citing the services not rendered as described.
This was not just poor service; it was a systematic failure that exploited our trust. We trusted you with a milestone, and you broke it. Now, we expect you to make it right.
- Michael (8/5): - Great restaurant next door. Close to best shopping.
- Katharina (8/5): - Great location, friendly staff, very nice breakfast lounge.
- Kristin (10/5): Comfy old school - We will miss this hotel during their 2 year renovation
- Colita (8/5): - We stayed at the Hotel Elysee for four nights in June 2025. The beds were rock hard and the rooms old and shabby. Smelled and looked like a grandmas closet. They are shutting down for remodeling and so to be fair, we got the worst of it. Run down and smelly. Robes were thread bear, shower barely worked, thermostat was analog. Do not recommend.
- Barbara (10/5): - Excellent staff, loved our suite and the Monkey Room and breakfast.
- darrelyn (10/5): - Fabulous location, lovely place to stay
- Nikki (8/5): - Everything was great except the pillows
- Flavio (8/5): - Very well located close to Central Park, 5th Ave and Rockfeller Center.
Check-in was fast and they accommodated us with an early check in without charge.
Parking (valet) for $40, decent.
Room is old, but decently spacious. Shower was great. Mini fridge was not working but they immediately brought a replacement.
Lighting at the room was poor (especially inside bathroom).
Breakfast was included and it was good enough.
Overall a good stay, but as most hotels in Manhattan, too overpriced for what you get.
- N-on-the-go (10/5): Charming hotel - We really enjoyed our 5 night stay at the Hotel Elysee. Our last couple of visits to Manhattan we stayed at the Royalton, which has a very hip, modern vibe. It was nice, but we wanted something a little homier this time, and Hotel Elysee was just right. It's charming, feels like there's a history to it. No, the furniture wasn't brand new, but the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom spotless, the service good. Very good location for visiting museums, the park, and 5th ave, without being too noisy or bustling. We will stay there again and recommend to others.
- Robert (10/5): - Very helpful staff.
- Andrea (6/5): - The hotel is well-located, the staff is professional and the breakfast/snack room and library are fine. Our room had old stained furniture with broken hardware and peeling wallpaper - and while clean it did not feel spotless. This is unlike the other Library Collection hotels which are more updated.
- gina (10/5): - Great sitting room for all day snacks and breakfast. Room was clean, well appointed, and staff was very friendly and helpful
- Michael (10/5): - Excellent staff, very professional, prompt, and courteous. Very comfortable rooms, quiet and clean. Excellent location. Very highly recommended.
- Jamie (10/5): - Charming, clean, private
- Fletcher (8/5): - This is an older property in fairly good condition. The rooms had enough space. Everything in the bathroom worked well, although there was not enough room for all of our cosmetics and medicines. Climate control worked, but was difficult to set for the desired temperature. The room was serviced every day, which was nice. The breakfast was a continental breakfast, with no protein, other than hard boiled eggs. The machine for espresso and cappuccino worked really well. Overall, there was nothing inadequate, but at $450 per night, it was very expensive for what we got.
- J (10/5): - Old world charm but updated and spotless. Don’t close and change to another modern hotel!
- michael (4/5): - Very very disappointed. My sister had stayed here on and off for years on business and was always promoting their excellence. Such a disappointing place to stay. Needs many updates including room working card keys, air/heat working and staying on and not making big noises in the room, breakfast options - pathetic unless you want sweets, pathetic handling of above mentioned problems by front desk and management. Would NOT recommend at this time. Perhaps they will take care of problems which they said they are looking into - should have told us about all the problems when we checked in. We could have then gone elsewhere. Our one compliment would be to Gary, the doorman who gave excellent service in a friendly manner. Thank you Gary!
- Wendy (10/5): - Perfect location
- Shirley (10/5): - We love the Elysee and sorry it will be closed for at least 2 years for renovations. We will miss it!
- melissa (10/5): - Lovely older hotel in the heart of Midtown. We enjoyed the charm, hospitality room and breakfast. The front desk provided us with a great dinner recommendation (and reservation). Despite the fact that some of the furnishings in our room could use an upgrade, it was overall a very good experience.
- Mary Ellen (8/5): - Great staff. Only comment worthy to consider is nobody mentioned breakfast served in 2 nd floor. This delight was discovered accidentally.
Other than that, very kind and helpful team. Clean, well appointed and superb location.
Thanks!
- James (10/5): - Hotel Elysee is like an old friend. It is comfortable, friendly and it is well located in Mid-Town Manhattan. The staff is exceptional. The second-floor lounge is perfect for a quick coffee or soda at any time of the day.
- Raj (10/5): - Outstanding location, great service from the front desk staff.
- Sandie (10/5): - This hotel far exceeded my expectations. It's definitely old, but it has a quaint, cozy charm that I loved. The staff is wonderful, the free breakfast and snacks all day was an unexpected and delightful surprise. The location is perfect--out of the chaos of Times Square, but an easy 15 - 20 min walk to see a Broadway show, and a 10 minute walk to Central Park. Plus, all the high-end shopping you could ever want. The subway station is about a block away, and to our surprise, we could go directly to Penn Station in only 4 stops (which was amazing as we took Amtrak to Boston when we left NY). Highly recommend.
- Yana (10/5): - Great property in good condition. We liked ambience and location.
- Melissa (10/5): - Fabulous location and spacious well-appointed rooms. Decor could use a refresh which we understand is in the works. The lounge with beverage and snack service is a nice touch, and we very much enjoyed a last minute drink and dinner at Monkey Bar before our show. Slept in with the quiet, cool room (and no children or dog requiring our attention - biggest treat of all)!
- Joan (10/5): - Great hotel, great service. Will definitely come back.
- Victor (8/5): - The property is totally fine, it’s just getting older. It’s somewhere in that in between point where it’s clearly dated but not quite dated enough to be an amazing relic.
Nothing terrible, but more of a three star hotel vs the four stars Expedia says it is
- Jacqueline (10/5): - It’s old but charming. It is also about to close for a renovation, I hope they keep the charm.
- Scott (10/5): - I stayed four nights and had a great experience. The late checkout and 24/7 lounge are excellent features. Highly recommend.
- Gabriela (10/5): - Love the place
- Lynne (10/5): - Great location! Quiet and very nice!
- Verified traveler (6/5): A few odd things - The hotel was nice. The light breakfast was nice. The service was nice. What I didn’t like was that the property details says parking was available at 40/day. When we arrived and needed to leave again, the attendant told us it was $40 per occurrence. One of the major factors of booking this go was th $40/ day parking. If it is occurrence, it should be explained clearly on the property details page. Then I would have probably skipped the hotel. Also, there area step ups to the bathrooms which is not typically seen in hotels, causing me to stub my toe and making it difficult to wheel in a wheelchair. I feel that should be mentioned in the property details also.
- James (10/5): - Classy midtown boutique hotel. Highly recommended!
- heather (10/5): - Very pleasant staff and lovely breakfast room!
- Andre (8/5): - .
- Marc (10/5): - A great hotel
- Sarah (10/5): - Wonderful! Elegant! Old New YOrk!
- Zaven (10/5): - Amazing place and friendly staff!
- John B. (10/5): - Great location. Nice lounge.
- michael (8/5): - Old school charm, well maintained, what a NY Hotel should be.
- jim (8/5): Old World Charm with Midtown's Best Shopping - We were in town for a family dinner and stayed one night. Front desk could not have been more helpful with a coffee shop recommendation and check out. We are low maintenance guests. Club room was sublime and a unique New York experience not getting charged for drinks and snacks. Our room was a little tired, some of the wallpaper could use some attending to but it was perfect for what we were looking for: a romantic overnight in an Old World feeling hotel room. Oh, and the location could not be better.
- Chamain (10/5): - Loved the lounge area for breakfast and snacks.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I asked for a handicapped room. It was very small and hard to maneuver a wheelchair. The shower didn't have a shower seat. The commode was very low and again not a big bathroom.
- Dmitry (6/5): - For the price.... a bit run down. carpets, showers.
They try to make it up with a French theme, which is nice.
Nice breakfast/library area and cute restaurant/bar connected to the lobby.
The internet on the 10th floor was barely working even after informing the front desk. As in ok to read the news in some areas of your room ;)
Windows noise isolation is somewhere from 1970th
- Ellen (10/5): - Older hotel that is well maintained with a friendly staff.
- Patricia (10/5): - Everything was excellent.Loved the sitting area where snacks were offered. Nice extra!
- Barbara (10/5): - The outside room is great
- Kin (10/5): - A
- Patricia (8/5): - Quaint, vintage hotel. Quiet and comfortable. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Great location for midtown exploring.
- Bluemango4me (2/5): Sewage backup in shower!!! - Raw sewage backup in the shower in room 81.
“Oh we’re sorry about that”
Only offered half off our room when it should have been comped.
Smelled horrible and what a mess!
Terrible experience! Expected better customer service at this hotel.
Avoid!!
- Harris (10/5): - Loved the second floor guest area with snacks all day and a lovely breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very clean. Staff was accommodating and friendly.
- William (10/5): - Our first time at the hotel and we greatly appreciated the service, the ambience and general appearance of the hotel. It’s a perfect location.
We also appreciated the Club Room as a place to relax with snacks and newspapers to read.
- Michael (10/5): - Location, breakfast, snacks, coffee. nice size room
- Patrick (10/5): - Room was in spectacular shape, front desk remembered your name after meeting you once, very nice experience
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing service, great location. The rooms are older but large and charming. The club house with unlimited snacks and drinks is a great perk.
- michaellV526DH (10/5): Very nice hotel in midtown. - Great hotel with a terrific location - quiet area but near everything. The second floor club room is an exceptional refuge from Manhattan hustle-bustle -an ideal place to relax or entertain friends in the city. The rooms were exceptionally clean and quite large. One of the best features of the place is their very accommodating and helpful staff. The decor is quite old-school and elegant - I love it -but my understanding is that the hotel will soon be remodeled. I hope that when it reopens the place does not lose any of its charm and the staff remain friendly
- tojopop (8/5): Perfect Location in Midtown East - The hotel is wonderfully located and the Monkey Bar in the lobby is pretty terrific. Staff is courteous and the rooms are spotless. It has seen better days and in need of some refreshing with the furniture in the rooms. But it's a great "bargain" for the area and we will be back again for sure. The style of the hotel has kept its charm.
- Susan (10/5): - Fabulous hotel. Staff very helpful. Convenient to NYC locations. Recommend to travellers
- Scott (10/5): - What a nice stay. The staff here was the story. Great service nice people. It’s an older property but clean, comfortable and water pressure!!!
- BYRON (10/5): - Our favorite NYC Hotel. Why? Because it’s always been like a home away from home. Small hotel with staff that have worked there for many years with minimal turnover provide an intimate and welcoming atmosphere hard to find anywhere particularly in New York City. They’re about to do an extensive remodeling in June so we’ll have to wait until they resurface - hopefully without losing the charm that made The Elysee a home away from home.
- Randy (8/5): - A very comfortable hotel with a very nice vibe
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Stay was fantastic. Beds comfortable and service great. Location was wonderful.
- SusanEast (6/5): Don’t Upgrade a 5’1” Solo Traveler to a King Bed - This is one of my favorite hotels in New York yet this visit was not a good one. Note: Tell this hotel ALL your preferences. Don’t just check boxes. I was upgraded! Yet my upgrade was to a king bed. I am 5’1” tall. I had to get out of bed to check my phone as the only outlets were on the other side of the bed away from the bathroom.
I asked for the room I had requested after hearing I had to wait an hour for my upgrade to be ready. The desk clerk selected a room right next to the elevator at the back of the building. When I rejected it the desk clerk said I should have been explicit on my preferences when I reserved.
The upgrade is two doors from the elevator. This is a boutique hotel in a group (The Library Collection) where I have stayed for over twenty years a couple of times a year. The desk clerk, AJ, must have been really tired from checking in quite a few couples while I waited over 45 minutes for my “upgrade”. When I again requested a room he informed me he was not required to give me a room before 3pm. It was 2:55 at this point. He told me to sit down and he would let me know when my upgrade was ready. The upgrade turned out to be two doors (10’) from the elevator at the back of the building with no natural light and the “upgrade” was to a king bed for a single person 5’1” tall.
Hotels! If you are going to offer an unexpected upgrade to a loyal customer of 20 years ASK what they consider an upgrade. My 5’10” friend got a Queen Deluxe with a sitting area at the front of the hotel. We had both asked for Queen Deluxe. It was her first visit so I am happy for her that she got the nicer room as I had selected the hotel.
Also be aware they add a temporary charge for $50 PER NIGHT as security.
- Jawana (10/5): - Quaint hotel central to many tourist attractions. Enjoyed our stay!
- Richard (10/5): - Excellent hotel!!
- Missy (10/5): - Wonderful!
- Cristina (6/5): - The staff was very nice and accommodating but overall hotel was old and very worn. I discovered the property will be closed for two years for renovation at the end of the month ( March) which tells me they are doing the minimal to get through the end of the month. If I had known this information I probably wouldn’t have stayed at the hotel. The beds were very hard and the air conditioning isn’t turned on in the building until mid April. I happen to be there on a few warm days so definitely would have used the AC.
I would skip staying here until the renovation is complete.
- Janice (10/5): - This is my 12th stay the Élysée. It is warm, safe with a welcoming staff. The club room fosters community among the guests. The physical property is very charming with a feel of early 20th century France. It is, however, in need of renovation and will close at the end of the month, for over a year for a complete renovation. Many of the loyal guests are looking forward to the renovation, anxious for the re-opening, and hoping that the welcoming, intimate ambience is preserved.
- Joshua (10/5): - This is our favorite NYC hotel
We’re sad that it is closing at the end of the month for a 2 year renovation
The staff is amazing and everything is perfectly done
- Geraldine (8/5): Charming boutique hotel - It’s a charming hotel in a convenient location with old-world decor. Very clean and quiet rooms.
- Sage (10/5): - Another great stay! Thank you.
- Keith (6/5): - Hotel has not been refreshed TV did not work and front desk simple said “ we know we are working on it.
- lovorn (10/5): Just WOW! Best service and beautiful hotel - Please allow me to brag a bit on your stellar choice of employees. I was on a business trip and my lifelong friend and daughter tagged along to see the Big Apple. From the moment Jesse held the door with his welcoming smile and friendly hello to the gentlemen at the front desk who answered our library list of questions we could not have felt more at home. When we had a small issue with our room, they leaped into action without being asked and offered to move our room. Poor Hector moved us to an AMAZING upgraded room only to realize there was no foldout couch, so he had to come right back and move us a 2nd time to a room that was also an upgrade but better suited our needs. He laughed with us and our silly antics trying to repack so rapidly that he felt like an old friend. Then Mark, wonderful Mark, assisted me in trying to find somewhere to donate extra food we had to the needy and was the one who insisted on making up for the small issue. There were many other incredibly helpful fellows but I, unfortunately, cannot recall their names. I wish I could because they too deserve all the accolades. I am going to post this on as many websites as I can, because I am in the hospitality industry and I've never seen a better staff- way to go. I will be back.
- LAURA (8/5): - Loved this hotel, which was central to every location we planned to visit. The continental breakfast got us off to a great start each morning. The staff were helpful and friendly. Charming atmosphere.
- Kathleen (8/5): - Lovely front desk staff. Great lounge area for breakfast and snacks all day available.
The room was spacious especially for New York but it was a bit worn out. Could use a refresh.
But all in all we had a wonderful stay and I would stay there again.
- Q5346XLjessicam (10/5): Thank you Juan and Hotel Elysee Team! - Hotel Elysee is our go-to place in NYC. Remarkable Midtown location, the Monkey Bar on the ground floor, and highly professional staff. A special salute to Juan at the Front Desk. He's the total hospitality professional and always takes good care of us. Thank you, Juan and team. Jessica
- James (10/5): - Very nice people at the check in desk. I love the breakfast on the 2nd floor and it has such friendly staff there. Excellent from start to finish.
- Julie (10/5): - It was a beautiful European style hotel with a very hip , beautiful, and busy restaurant and bar
- Charles (8/5): - We liked the space of the double room, but the rooms were a bit dated. The bed was great though. Slept very well. Would be happy to return. Great location. Within walking distance of so many things we had on our list of must do list.
- Nancy (8/5): Stayed here many times - Front desk. Not as friendly as usual. Room has all one needs. Monkey bar next door so much fun. Very affordable hotel.
- Donna (10/5): - Upon arrival AJ and Jesse served as warm and welcoming ambassadors for Hotel Elysée and this past weekend’s all around excellent experience staying at the hotel.
- Scott (10/5): - Only downside is lack of room service. Great place.
- Anita (10/5): - Fabulous location for shopping. It's a very old building and the lobby isn't great but the room is in good shape and spacious. The staff is very nice. Attached is the Monkey Bar. Very popular and pretty. I haven't had the chance to eat there but I heard it was good. I did have a drink.
- Sage (10/5): - The staff and hotel is wonderful. Can't wait to return. Thank you.
- Robin (10/5): - Loved it all, loved the Monkey
Bar. loved the location!!
- Mary (10/5): - Loved the service and the 2nd floor lounge
- Rebecca (10/5): - Have stayed here numerous times. Always great!
- David (10/5): - Very friendly and accommodating staff. The breakfast/snack rooms are well supplied with good coffee, and pastries, and snacks and bottled still and sparkling water. Newspapers there are NY Times, Wall Street Journal, and New York Post. Very comfortable chairs and sofas and small tables in snack rooms. Perfect for leisurely breakfast or having afternoon tea. Many rooms have great comfortable chairs for reading. The Hotel and rooms have a seasoned French vibe. The Monkey Bar connected to the Hotel is a must for lunch or dinner--very popular with young crowd.
- DEBRA (10/5): - This is a great smaller hotel and it is beautiful. The staff is so friendly and helpful. It is a great location ans walking seems very safe. I do miss their happy hour but I understand the economics of that.
- Daniela (8/5): - Good place for a trip to Manhattan.
- John (10/5): - Love it!
- chris (10/5): - Nice place
- Thomas (10/5): - Charming design to rooms & furnishings. Very warm & helpful staff.
- Jane (10/5): - This is a comfortable and friendly place to stay.
We liked the club-room where you could always get a snack and hot beverage!
- Jenny (10/5): NYC getaway - It was a family meet up in New York City. He stayed one night. The front desk people and doorman were extremely accommodating. We enjoyed being able to spend some time sitting in the lounge, relaxing having a cuppa coffee. It’s always a plus to get up in the morning and not have to go out for breakfast.
Location was a plus
- Caroline (4/5): - Holes location was great, but hotel itself is very outdated
- Rebecca (10/5): - Always great!
