Guest Reviews
- morgene398 (10/5): Lovely traditional futon room in quieter area of Osaka - We arrived and the lady on reception helped us carry out heavy cases up the stairs which was really appreciated. All of the staff were very friendly and attentive the whole of our stay too. The room was gorgeous and the shared facilities were clean and were separate for each floor so you're not sharing with too many others. We got a futon room for the 2 of us and it was so lovely and pretty comfortable. It was cosy but had enough space for our futons and bags. The only thing to keep in mind is the walls are very thin so noisy neighbours can be heard but they do have free earplugs for you to use which was great. We also loved the shop downstairs too and they were kind enough to give us a discount on our purchases. Thank you for an excellent stay :)
- 664jessep (10/5): The best-kept secret. - Fon-Su is so rad! I had a great time hanging out at the bar and became friendly with the staff. There's a record/thrift shop there too and the night I stayed they had a DJ night and ended up buying a bunch of records and getting my fortune told. They also have food, wifi and a crazy shower throne (you'll see what I mean). They even held onto my bag for two days while I went on a 2-day hike! Nice beds in the shared room and felt very private. I will be coming back for sure.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- JIMJIM1990 (10/5): Convenient in a great location - This small B&B is less than 5 mins away from the subway which connects you with the rest of the city and major sites easily. Within walking distance of the B&B there are lots of little restaurants and shops. The staff took the time to explain what was nearby on their homemade map with their favourites marked on it. I chose a japanese room which was comfortable, clean & functional. Breakfast in the morning was good.

- Verified traveler (10/5): - quiet area, convenient location, and kind staff members. I really enjoyed staying here, and am willing to stay again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Enjoyed our 2nd stay at the property! Easy commutes to tourist sights. Bonus is the akira shower
- Eric (10/5): 10 out of 10, would book again - Superb location and very comfortable lodging. Not only are the owner's English skills excellent, but she is very friendly and helpful in offering directions and suggestions of local activities. Breakfast is delightful.
- bwwvanderpol (6/5): Ok hostel at good location - We stayed at 64 on our final two nights in Japan. The architect-owner did a good job refurbishing this appartment building.
Friendly staff, good information on nearby shops and places to eat provided by nicely illustrated maps. We had a hurricane and an informative e-mail was sent upfront, good service.
Good access by two subway lines. Best assett are the great neighbourhoods of southern Osake city centre. We walked in 10-15mins to the best food and great shops. Mainly in the weekend top notch base to search out Osaka evening and nightlife as 64 Hostel itself is outside the crowded areas.
Images on website do portray interior a bit more upscale 'designish' than in reality is the case. Bare in mind night life visitors in the hostel can wake you up at night since Soji screens look nice but hold back no sound at all. Hostel provides earpluggs, they are needed.
Feedback: great refurbishment, now you have to keep it up. A lot of dust in-between shoji screens, stains in ceiling. Don't let it slide! Also maps with tips are outdated since over 30% we visited was allready gone / closed.
- watermelonarchway (10/5): Warm, friendly, authentic and funky - My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights during my first trip to Japan. In short, this place is friendly, welcoming, well located, and perfect for travelers.
The room we stayed in was small (just a double bed and a chair), but that was fine for us. There was a sink and mirror, shower, and bathroom shared with the other 3 rooms on our floor, but we were aware of this ahead of time so we didn't mind at all. The hostel also had free Wi-Fi available, which was helpful for us.
The hostel staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and they were kind enough to translate the instructions on some medicine we bought from the pharmacy. The hostel serves a cheap, simple breakfast with optional bottomless coffee in the mornings, which was a great way to start the day.
In terms of location, we really enjoyed staying in Shinmachi. The hostel staff gave us a hand drawn map with lots of food recommendations, and it was only 2 stops away from Namba station (a major station connected to the airport), and near Dotonbori.
This was a really special place to begin our Japan holiday.
- Blizaed (8/5): The price of a hostel but extra space. - I chose to stay here after a review in a guide book, After looking online, the price was very reasonable during cherry blossom week. Comparing to the other hostels around, there was very little difference in the prices, so I gave it a go.
I was not disappointed. Rather than having bunk beds, the dorm was split into several single beds separated by curtains giving a far larger degree of privacy and space than other hostels. It even comes with a personal safe, stool, writing area and towel heater.
The only negative to the room was that it was in the basement without a window but compared to sleeping on a bunk bed, I know which is better.
The location is pretty good near to some sights but is also only 2 mins walk to the nearest metro station to get anywhere in Osaka. a little complex to get to and from the airport via public transport however.
The service was as expected for hostel, nice enough and offered plenty of advice. breakfast was smal but tasted ok and was cheap. the bar area was cosy with an honesty system set up for 24hr operation.
I reccomend this hostel to anyone staying in Osaka on a budet. No probems with more space than a normal hostel.
- MJFQuin (8/5): Good little hostel in good location - Clean hostel in a location 5 mins away from a subway. Two stops from Dontonburi too which is a must see. Had a good walk around this location and the hostel recommends some good sites to visit too. Breakfast is available for a little extra and you can also hire bikes for a reasonable fee.
- hthwggns (10/5): Third visit, still in love - My 3rd time staying at Hostel 64 and certainly not my last. Stayed in a traditional-style tatami room this time and had a really comfortable night's sleep. Staff were great and the location couldn't be better - I was able to walk to both the Dotonbori area and the Umeda area as well as rent a bike to ride to Osaka Castle. I always recommend this place to friends and will definitely continue to do so. Can't wait to come back again soon!
- DuncanG92 (10/5): 5 Star service - My girlfriend and I stayed in the double bed private room. Spacious, light, with a small balcony, and perfectly clean. Towels and ear plugs on the bed a very nice touch, and unexpected considering the price and that Osaka 64 is a youth hostel. Shared bathroom also good and clean.
The staff are very friendly, and it comes across as natural, not fake, and they are all very knowledgeable about things to do, places to eat and how to get around. So helpful. We stayed 3 nights then went to Kyoto for 2 nights and came back for one more night. There was no problem with leaving our luggage in the hostel. When we came back for the last night our luggage had already been put in our room for us.
Only small criticisms are that the curtains are thin and let in a lot of light in the morning and on one night people chatting loudly in another room could be heard in our room for a short time while were trying to sleep. But it's a youth hostel, not a hotel, so you've got to expect some of that. Hence the ear plugs.
Nonetheless, I recommend it 100%, I doubt you will find better value for money anywhere.
- RobHToronto (10/5): Awesome hostel in Osaka! Small rooms and dorms - Fantastic hostel. Comfy room for us 3 travellers. Clean bathroom and shower. Really interesting aesthetic to the hostel too! Staff are outstanding. Give great suggestions for restaurants and activities. We even worked on sending postcards back to Canada and the front desk staff spent a ton of time helping us with postage and translating English to Japanese! Would definitely suggest to anyone staying in Osaka. A few metro stops away from the busy areas. Hostel also rents bikes for 200 yen a day!
- BounceBella (8/5): Cool place - Really great hostel with knowledgable and helpful staff. Great design vibe and nice place to meet people as a solo traveller. I've stayed here 3 times and it would always be my first choice in Osaka. The breakfast I had when I stayed with home made bread was also really delicious.
- tomche23 (10/5): One of if not the Best Hostel to stay in - One of if not the best hostels I've stayed in! Really lovely chill welcoming friendly atmosphere from staff. Facilities are awesome common room is amazing with great music, bean bags, incredible massage chair & N64! MUST RENT BIKES FROM HERE to cruise Osaka :) Excellent double room clean comfy. Shared bathroom is really spacious accompanied with shampoo, conditioner and shower gel/soap. They supply towels and ear plugs which is useful if you like total silence although hostel is chill.
- SelinaT556 (8/5): Cosy hostel - The subway is around 5 minutes walk away and there are a couple of convenience stores close to the property. The neighbourhood is quiet but for light sleepers, mostly due to the shared bathrooms, it was a lovely touch to get ear plugs. They accommodated us for a late check-in which we were very grateful for and taking our luggage upstairs and down was really much appreciated. Note: there are no lifts. Futons were comfy and the shower was huge.
An uncommon sight was the sun deck where you could dry your clothes or chill out outside.
Breakfast was light and delicious. Helpful maps are available.
- G3998ZHrobv (10/5): Great local experience - Stayed in the dorm for 3 nights. Really nice private space with the linnen in between and double beds, no bunkbeds! Good price-quality. Is a bit chilly in the dorm, but plenty blankets available. They have a relax area where you can buy local craft beers and chill. There is breakfast which is okay, not great. Location easy accesible by Subway and short walk. I know also private rooms available with traditional Japanese decoration, look good, no experience.
- TomB407 (8/5): Great first impression - Room:
We stayed in a J1 tatami room which made for a great first impression of Japan. It's definitely worth staying in a traditionally styled room but remember, as stated on their website, sound can travel so sleep with the ear plugs.
Location:
5 minutes easy walk from a subway station - no problems. Plenty of convenient places nearby including Family Mart, and local bars and eateries. They provide a good area map to set you on your way.
Service, food and drinks:
Really friendly and helpful staff. They offer a simple breakfast for ¥500 with coffee. It would be a nice touch if this was offered free to guests. They sell beers at bar rates (¥500-¥750) so if you want to save some yen, buy 'em from the Family Mart around the corner.
Facilities:
The lobby is well set up with books etc; bathrooms are shared but clean; self-service laundry with sun deck for drying - all the stuff you'd expect from a good hostel.
Complaints/issues:
No complaints. Don't come here expecting hotel standards.
Overall:
This place offers a unique Japanese/urban/retro style in a small building. They seem comfortable with their identity and most travellers would enjoy it. Very good.
- MattJamesGriffiths (6/5): Cool little hostel. - Cool little hostel. Warm, comfortable and cozy rooms that come with a shared bathroom. Plenty of literature in the shared area on things to do in Osaka. Lift would have been nice instead of lugging luggage up and down stairs.
- UWiinblad (10/5): Excellent budget hotel/hostel at the centre of Osaka. - Situated in a 1960' apartment building, run by a architectural/design company.
Well situated at the centre off Osaka, good connections to all parts of the city.
Rooms small and basic but good value for money. Common washing and toilet facilities on each floor.
Staff ver friendly and helpful. Most of the guests a young backpacker crowd.
- 22evanw (10/5): Authentic Experience - This place was exactly what I needed in my trip to Japan. And although you do sleep on the floor of the mattresses are very comfortable.
It was a little difficult to locate so make sure you review directions.
This place was recommended and referred to by friends in Kyoto as being the best hostel in Osaka
- Chris_DJ_Bear_Acton (10/5): The nicest place we stayed in Japan - For most of our trip we stayed in Air B&B's, which was fine, if a little soulless. The same could not be said of Hostel 64, this place had quirky style in spades.
The design was really cool and laid back; all exposed, industrial surfaces, meeting polished wood and stainless steal. The rooms were comfortable, light and clean.
The lounge by the reception was really cozy, a great place to hang out and collect your thoughts, or play one of the board games on offer.
And to top it off, we saw a humming bird buzzing about our balcony.
- Eagle_C (10/5): Wonderful stay - clean and quiet - I like this hostel as it is located in a quiet residential area which is far from the noisy tourist area but only 2 stations away from it. The dormitory is very nice as it is not a bunk bed but an individual bed with privacy. There is a very nice noodle shop, just a block away, which I have been there for 2 nights.
