• Willem-Jan (10/5): Local hosts with huge confortable rooms - Excellent location, close to large amount of offices around Roseberg and Sandton but still in a quiet and relatively safe housing area. Big rooms and bathroom with big shower and a bathtub. Exceptionally nice hosts. Clean big rooms with tea and coffee maker in the room and a big television. You can open the large windows and hear the birds singing. Plus loads of storage space - world record for that in a room ever. Definitely coming back. Nothing. Oh, but you do have to like dogs :-) But they were very nice to the me as a guest even when returning late. They love it if you give them some attention.

• Stefan (8/5): Es hat uns gut gefallen. - Das Frühstück war bestens und genügend. Konnten dies bei einem gemütlichen Frühstückstisch einnehmen und wurden bestens bedient. Die Zimmerausstattung ist etwas in die Jahre gekommen. Ansonsten war das ganze Ambiente alles bestens.

The mattress was very comfortable and pleasing decor plys a nice view over the garden and pool. It is worth staying here just for the exceptional design and architecture of the building. Modern, airy, and full of artwork... The location is in a beautiful tree lined avenue in a very good area of Johannesburg. I look forward to my next visit to Houghton Place.

(9/5): Nice experience in a real residential house - The owners are very welcoming, they give you a lot of tips for sightseeing and restaurants and you can basically hang around with them in the garden. The area is very safe but everybody uses uber wherever they go anyway. The room was very comfortable, good bed. Part of the bathroom has a milky glass wall towards the hallway but the hallway is only shared by the 3 guest rooms (so no real traffic on the hallway). I noticed water was leaking from the bathroom to the hallway - it can be fixed. However the light on the hallway was on the whole night so bring a face sleeping mask. Apparently it is necessary to agree the time of breakfast upfront as on my last day, it was Sunday I needed to leave at 8am but there was nobody awake. I felt sorry to wake the owners up to sort out the bill and eventually had to leave without a breakfast. Not a big deal but be aware to sort everything upfront.

The owner, Sam, was warm, welcoming and friendly. The garden and swimming pool are lovely and make you forget that you are in a big city! The bedroom is spacious too, the bed is extremely comfortable, the bathroom really lovely and clean and the room has everything you need. Breakfast was delicious and home cooked. I loved their two beautiful labrador dogs too.

Sam and Sally are wonderful hosts and they make everything, that you feel familiar. The rooms and the house are lovingly furnished. The breakfast is with the freshest fruits and incredibly delicious. I think, it’s the best place in Johannesburg to make from strangers friends.
• Hans-werner (8/5): Great location, good service - The property was well located for my purposes, the room spacious and comfortable and a nice view from the room not the garden. Secure parking is available on the premises and Patricia was very friendly and efficient with the check-in process. The TV was not connected to the internet, so it did not work. Some of the furnishings are showing signs of wear and tear, Similarly, the floor covering in the bathroom requires maintenance. I did not like the glass wall that separates the public passage from the bathroom, it does not feel private and the passage light remained on until 24:00 which meant the room was not dark enough to facilitate a good sleep.

The location within the city is very good, safe and beautifully green. The shower takes a long time to get to temperature but I don’t feel this is something Sam can change. The room was fully equipped with shower and bath so we had nothing to complain.

• Maria (4/5): Had to endure the stay of 20 nights as I had made a non refundable booking. Misleading advert. - Breackfast average. Location very good Advert was misleading. I booked a self catering apartment with private kitchen, dinning room etc. Was surprised when I arrived and found out I only had a room with private bathroom. Everything else I had to share with the owners and other people, including the noise of 2 parties held by the owners during our stay. No TV channels, except for Aljazeera and Netflix but the internet was down so many times that we could not even watch these 2 channels. Extremely expensive. .
