sarahfarnon (8/5): Great spot and wonderful staff! - Cristaly at the desk was so so lovely! So courteous and gracious with her time when I was asking for tips for what to get up to for the day definitely deserves a raise! Hotel was also super central which was great and all the staff were so helpful during the heat in giving us free water bottles whenever needed. Only docked a point for small things like water pressure for the shower but likely just due to it being an old building. Rooms were very tidy and the bed was extremely comfortable which was needed after a long day of sightseeing. Highly recommend

dhamj2023 (8/5): Stay here!!!!!!!! - The location was good. It was convenient to tour the highlights of New York. The room was a little bit small by the way. And I could hear the noise from outside. But hotel staffs were very kind. Especially Prisulla! She was amazing, the best staff ever! Thank you!
Nate (2/5): - I was traveling with students with 4 total rooms. When i called to confirm our stay the day before I was told by the person who answered that that the hotel was closed as of the previous afternoon. I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY PRIOR NOTIFICATION FROM EITHER THE HOTEL OR EXPEDIA. After more than 90 minutes Expedia was able to rebook the rooms in a hotel that was in a good location, but was not as noce as was indicated in the previous booking or the second booking website
Discovering (10/5): - Loved it! Quiet, clean and affordable
BILLY (6/5): - Listen...it's a real great convenient spot to stay. I don't really mind that the sheets weren't changed—they just made the bed—or that the candy wrapper I left on the night stand was swept under the bed. I was confused why no one told me that the hotel would unlock my room for an engineer to come in within the few hours that I left for dinner to remove my deadbolt. I came back trying to secure my room for my own personal safety and could not do so. The point of a lock is so that I could prevent strangers from using the hotel key card to creep up on me while I'm asleep. What was even more unsettling was that a tall man in a black suit who I have never seen before, knocked on my hotel door minutes after I went down to the lobby to ask about my deadbolt "assure me that he is watching the floor". During my conversation with staff at the lobby, they found out that the e-mail I had written down on file during my check-in was also entered into the system incorrectly. Even after the staff corrected the e-mail telling me that they would investigate, I have no follow up on the incident by any staff or hotel e-mails. Personally, I wouldn't bothering helping out either but any contact would have been nice. Great experience overall. Take nothing from my experience, except the fact that I do think it's a great hotel with friendly service. Be vigilant of your surroundings so that you and your belongings don't go missing. If you're looking for a cheap place to sleep this is it.

When I asked for anything they would keep talking to each other and I would have to ask twice for anything. I would avoid unless you’re super desperate. The rooms were sad and small and the bed sagged in the middle.

Katherine (10/5): - We booked this hotel based on the reviews we had read that said it was excellent. And those reviews were accurate. The location is fantastic. You can walk to the MOMA, Central Park and Times Square from here plus there are multiple subway stations nearby so you can go anywhere. The hotel restaurant and bar are also excellent too. The staff was super friendly and accommodating, as we were there earlier than check-in time. For the price, you won’t find better than this place. Finally, the rooms were bigger than we expected. We have been coming to the city for years and have seen smaller rooms.
Namoi (6/5): - Staff is friendly during check in. The place itself is pretty shabby. The room is small and the air condition smell moldy. It was around 50 degrees outside but it still felt warm inside because they have the ac setting locked. It works for 2 seconds then stops. It felt stuffy.

The location was perfect, as we were in NYC to see Wicked, which is playing at the Gershwin, right across the street from the hotel. The only issue we encountered was that the cleaning staff attempted to open the door while we were sleeping.

Every time we walked in someone greeted us and made sure we had water to drink when we left out. Dahlia was AMAZING!!!!! I would stay again due to her outstanding customer service. Look its not a large, or foir seasons hotel so do not expect that, but Dahlia makes up for it with her smile and how accommodating she was. I like smaller hotels and staying in a hotel woth 20 or evn 40 floors is a no for me, but if you want a nice boutique hotel that is clean, this is it!

tickles23 (10/5): Lovely family 5 night stay - I cannot believe some of the negative recommendations this hotel has received from other reviewers. My family (wife and two young kids under 7) stayed here for 5 nights recently and we can only have complimentary words to say about it. We arrived at 10pm and were warmly welcomed and quickly checked in. Our room was fine. Nice and clean with plenty of storage space. After a good sleep on comfy beds we were up early next morning to explore. The hotel is ideally situated. Close to the South Ferry and the Downtown C subways. Time Square is just a few minutes walk, and there are lots of good restaurants like Don Antonio, Gallaghers Steakhouse and Ellen's Star Diner only a short distance away. I've seen people write that there is a smell of weed at the hotel? That's very unfair because from what we discovered, a lot of New York city smells this way nowadays! Our room was cleaned every day and any encounter we had with the staff was always very pleasant. They could not do enough for you when asked. Other reviewers also complained about the noise? Really? You're talking about a hotel situated in the middle of Manhattan near Time Square. What are you expecting? Thank you to all at the Square Hotel for a wonderful stay. We will hopefully have an opportunity to stay here again in the future when we next visit NYC.
Sarah (8/5): - I liked how close to Broadway it was, and a parking garage located so close. I didn't like that they didn't have accommodations for the stay. Breakfast, forks, straws, napkins... Etc.
Larry (6/5): - The location is excellent for shopping, within walking distance of the various theaters and the subway is at the corner. The staff is pleasant and helpful. On the negative side, there is a lot of street noise and bright lights because of the theater on the opposite side of the street, the desk chair is too big for the size of room, there are not enough pillows for the size of the bed, and a small refrigerator would be nice. Also, the cable options are very limited with no News channel available.

Samantha (4/5): Great location BAD beds - Great location. Very nice decor. The room for the price just like all NYC hotel rooms was shockingly small. But there was no bathrobe like the description suggested, no table to sit at, no cups or ice bucket, however someone from the desk did bring us cups and ice. There was free water you could ask for more at the desk throughout your stay. The bed was super uncomfortable. I should have asked for more pillows. They become like squished little pancakes and it was top five worst nights of sleep. There are no blackout curtains and the streetlight comes though pretty strongly. The Venetian blinds were missing pieces in a couple so that made it even worse trying to sleep with all the light coming through. Even with the great location I still would not stay here again. Sleep is necessary.

williem63 (8/5): Great hotel with easy access in the theater dist. - This is a excellent choice for a hotel with east subway access. It is very close to all of the theaters. It is one subway stop from Times Square on the 1 line. It is also east to get to/from LaGuardia (1 hour on subway). It is 2 blocks from radio city music hall. The rooms are not large but we spent very little time in it. It was a very clean hotel. They have a sushi restaurant off of the lobby. This is the second time I have stayed with them. I will look for them on my next stay.

BMbale (8/5): Location, location, location - Cozy Hotel in a very good location in manhattan. Times Square is just around the corner on Broadway. The hotel is clean with average-sized standard Queen rooms. Warm and friendly staff especially Sean who goes out of his way to help his guests. Plenty of shops for memorabilia, clothes, food and theatres for your entertainment What the hotel lacks in terms of views from the rooms it makes up for with its location and coziness.

Jane (6/5): - The hotel was in the midst of being acquired by another owner and the phones still had the previous mention of the last hotel name. We had to keep calling the front desk as we had no hot water every night. I think they turned off the boiler to save cost or something as everyone we called them, we suddenly had hot water available. Room was very small and hardly can fit with 2 medium sized luggages. Public parking was right next door but comes with heavy price tag. Other than that, the location was right in the middle of the action, just near 50 th St subway station and walking distance to Winter Garden theatre and Broadway/Times Square.

The staff where fantastic so can’t complain there however the room was shocking nothing like the website it’s was a box room with a bathroom which was the size of a shoe box the bed was so hard and uncomfortable and I got bit from Somthing on the bed outside stank of weed and so does all of NY the location isn’t exactly on time square either
Sophie199528 (2/5): Disappointed on our first visit to NYC - First time in NYC - and we were disappointed with this hotel. Partner booked a surprise trip for us both to NYC and we were super excited as you can imagine. We arrived after such a long flight and a delay at the airport to our hotel, which made us tired and wanting some rest. Receptionist was friendly so no issues there. We were assigned our room and we were both looking forward to having a look at what we had in store as the photos looked lovely. DISAPPOINTED ISNT THE WORD. Our room was tiny, with a small double bed and the tiniest bathroom ever, even the bath was so low on the floor it was like a child’s bath and when filled up it would just cover you legs!! The photos were not the same as the rooms and it was so misleading. The room look so much bigger and such different styles on the photos with lovely decor. Ours was not! One of the photos on booking.com that is advertised showing the entrance to the hotel, isn’t even the same hotel! Plug sockets, light switches were not even screwed in the wall properly, the bathroom door was even hanging off. The heating was hissing all night and would wake us both up at stupid o’clock in the morning. We under stand that the price of hotels are expensive in a city like NY but to pay $650 for 4 night, was ridiculous for what we got. Won’t be staying here again! Such a shame as the staff are all so lovely

Andy (2/5): - We arrived on Monday the 13th and the room we were given carpet was wet. The wall radiator was constantly leaking water. We asked for another room and that room was worse than the one we originally had so we asked if we could just tough it out in our original but after the first night we were over it. The water heater leaked water all night you could see steam coming out of it and it was so close to the bed it was easy to burn your self on it. The shower leaked all night. The rooms were nothing as advertised on Expedia. After the first night we called Expedia to see if we could get atleast a partial refund but the hotel did not want to. The staff was pretty rude except for a few people. We couldn’t take it after the second night the rooms just felt eh with the wet carpet non cleanliness that we decided to just take the loss and get another hotel. We moved hotels to the CitizenM which was awesome I’d totally recommend that hotel over the square and they’re right next to each other.
Ruby (2/5): - Room is smaller than my RV bedroom. I had to walk sideways between the wall and bed to get into bed (maybe 8 inches from wall to bed). Woke up to loud construction on the other side of room wall at 730am. No hot water in the shower. Maintenance came and ran it until it turned warm but it went warm to cold (mostly cold) through 2 showers. Hotel phone has name of “Amsterdam hotel” on it. Buttons for housekeeping, front desk ring constant busy. Came back from breakfast off site & our hallway was blocked with construction workers working on ladders. Location is good. Close to subway. Staff was nice. Re: small room. I’ve been to NYC 5-6 times & always stay in Manhattan/theater district. This is by far the smallest room of any I have stayed at.

LeighTHOUV (2/5): DO NOT STAY HERE - I WOULD NOT TOUCH THIS PLACE WITH A BARGE POLE!! Its not boutique, more liike a hostel!! Rooms were small which would not have been so much of an issue if they were spotless and in good condition. We had sockets not attached to the wall full, handles coming away from the main door to our room, hissing radiator, towel rail which had half fallen off the wall, stained bedding, damaged headboard. The carpet looked dirty and furniture was all damaged. The bathroom wasnt any better either!! From the outside the bar is to the right and restaurant to the left and the windows have what looks like plastic on the inside of them. For the same price we moved to the hotel next door which was lovely!

lemongrrl (2/5): NOISE! LIGHTS! Cold, hard bed, cheap reno. In short, terrible. - I can’t believe the ratings for this property on TripAdvisor! This is a terrible hotel. I had much better options but the social media savvy of this property persuaded me that it was a unique indie boutique hotel. It’s a shabbily converted flophouse and, if I knew what this property was really like, I wouldn’t have stayed there. Upon check-in, the staff at the front desk try to butter you up. I was given room 211. If they try to give you this room, reject it or any room that faces the front of the hotel! The street noise is unbelievable at all times of the day and night. Also, the marquee from the Broadway theater across the street produces a LOT of light at night - so much that it looks exactly like daylight streaming through your window. And this is a cheaply renovated property, so blackout curtains are not provided. The air conditioner was on in the room when I entered on a February day - presumably to drown out the street noise. There is a restaurant/bar on the first level of the property with activity into the evening. As stated, the room was cheaply renovated and the wallpaper was already peeling from the walls. There was no desk, chair, or full length mirror like in the pictures. Just a terribly hard bed, TV, nightstands, and a cheap black plastic “chandelier”. The closet had some hangers and a safe. The room was reasonably clean but very uncomfortable. The room was not warm enough at night. Heat is by radiator but on a February evening, it didn’t provide enough heat for the room. No extra blankets were stored in the room. Bathroom was small but reasonably clean. Good water pressure. Wash clothes were not provided. This hotel isn’t close enough to Times Square to call itself a Times Square hotel. It’s one stop north on the subways. It is well located on the local (not express) subway lines. It’s a couple of blocks to Rockefeller Center. There is a Food Emporium, Pret, and other food places in the neighborhood. I would NOT recommend this hotel due to the noise, bright lights at night, the hard bed, and the cold. There is a Citizen M next door and other mid priced and reliable hotels in the neighborhood that are much better choices.

The rooms were clean and also staff was attentive and specially Cristaly helped us with all our questions and she gave us many recommendations. We absolutely recommend this hotel not only for the location but for the staff that work there.
Verified traveler (8/5): Ideal location - I chose this hotel because it was near all of the theaters and museums that we were going to and we were able to walk everywhere. The place is dated, the building is old, and the room was small. The coffee table took up the walk space in the living room and we kept hitting our legs on the platform bed. We asked to order ice in the lobby and they said to call housekeeping from the room; however, the phone didn't work! We asked for a fridge and the plug did not fit through the opening in the cabinet so we had to keep the door open. The outlet in the bathroom didn't work so we had to use the hairdryer in the room. There was construction going on right next door so it was noisy from very early in the morning. We parked across the street and I was able to use a coupon from Park Whiz. The heat was generated by a radiator and it was either blasting hot or chilly since we did not have control over the heat. One morning I had to wait for a few minutes for hot water. There was a "resort fee" because they gave us bottled water and to cover the cost of housekeeping. This place is NOT a resort! All of that said, the staff was friendly and the location was convenient so it suited our purposes. But it was not the lap of luxury.
samanthacU6846IC (8/5): Needs improvement has potential - Stayed here for 4 nights. Location great, room small but expected this. We had several little issues with our room that made the stay less pleasant. Bath didn’t have a plug and was cracked, sockets hanging off wall, dirty headboard, doors didn’t shut well, air con noisy, wardrobe tatty and wedged with cardboard. Bed was comfortable and the mirror was great, decor was modern. We did speak to staff and eventually to the manager Kevin who was brilliant, he listened, apologized and took on board all comments with the view to getting it right. With this in mind and his willingness to make improvements we would give it a 2nd try as has huge potential. The bar area, restaurant and reception areas all really lovely. Staff friendly and minutes from Times Square and so many subway stations. We would stop again.

Terry (6/5): Convenient but small! - The hotel was a great price for a very convenient location for our trip.We went to see "Wicked" and the Hotel was right across the street. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The room was a disappointment, not because it was dirty or anything but it was very tiny. I kept knocking my shins on the bed as I tried to get around the room. If I had realized the room was so small I may have gotten a queen room instead of a King. For the one night we were staying, the room was perfect. If you're planning more than one night, I would recommend finding a larger space to stay.

Mandyshipman (6/5): Great location - Stayed 5 nights in January- location great - helpful staff - following on from recent comments yes the room was a little small and the air con a little dated but for the price we paid we were happy - as for the smell of weed - it’s all over NYC 🤦 the only time we smelt it in the corridor of the hotel the reception staff was straight up to find out where it was coming from - there is a really nice vibe in the bar and restaurant - overall we thought good value for the money paid

The phone did not work so we had to go downstairs whenever we needed anything. The water in bathroom would not run a couple of times for periods of 5-10 minutes. Staff was friendly well the hotel staff. Attached restaurant staff were rude but overall 5-10 location was great, discounted parking was nice! Probably won’t return but it was definitely not our best stay in nyc
Milo (8/5): Character and Charm - A belated honeymoon, we really thought the room was nice, but the end of the bed was problematic for our shins because the room did not have the space for that kind of base. It would also be good for them to check the status of the floors below the heaters in the rooms. Ours was a little damaged looking. Overall we really enjoyed ourselves and the staff was amazing. We would absolutely stay here again for the friendliness and comfort alone. Thank you for such a welcoming stay!

LucyPhelps (2/5): Do not stay here - I recently stayed at this hotel and would not recommend it. Although the staff were sweet, the standards of the hotel are extremely poor and I don't believe the central location makes up for this. It would be better to stay elsewhere. Small rooms ; shabby furniture ; general basic clean but if you looked closely very dirty in corners, by radiators etc ripped headboards; temperature in shower unpredictable ; fittings coming off the walls; constant smell of weed ; phones have the old hotel name on and no info how to call reception ; window didn't lock so total access to my room from the fire escape; not double glazed so noisy ; stuffy room with old rattling air conditioning unit. Sadly on the last morning I developed wheals / hives from either bed bugs or something from the bedsheets. You'd be much better to stay elsewhere and it's totally unsuitable for a business trip.
paulcK2740HD (2/5): Do not go - I stayed there for 6 days perfect location rooms are small but perfectly adequate the issue I had was being bitten to pieces by bed bugs I did contact the front desk all they could do was move rooms but holiday ruined by then been bitten about 20 times on my feet arms hands legs never been bitten by bed bugs before there painful and itchy absolutely ruined my stay saved up for a yr for that trip

The room was clean, but the ac was on the heat didnt work and made loud banging noises all night not allowing us to sleep we kept jumping everytime it would make the noises. Its winter in NY idk why the ac was on or even know why the ac is still in the window when the room is like an ice cube.

Highly recommend!! - My husband and I had been trying to plan a trip to NYC for Christmas since we married. We were unable to go on our honeymoon, then covid cancelled more plans, several anniversaries passed and this year we FINALLY made it happen. We booked last minute and were shocked at the affordability for queen room, given the location (right in the heart of Manhattan, only blocks to Time Square and Rockefeller) and only 2 days before Christmas. Since this was our first time to the city I called guest services prior to arrival with a list of questions. I (over) explained our trip and our excitement to Dalia. Hearing her excitement FOR us made me even more excited for our mini-vacation. (Plus, she answered all my questions!) Upon arrival, parking was super easy across the street in the Wicked valet parking deck. We were then greeted at the front desk by Priscilla and Dalia and advised we had been upgraded to a Superior King room!! While the rooms are rather small, they are extremely comfortable and modern. The bed was like hug from an old friend and although the accommodations were nothing out of the ordinary it felt like a home away from home. Unfortunately we chose the coldest Christmas in 20 years to visit and being an older building there was a pesky draft in the room that made it hard to maintain a comfortable temperature. However maintenance personnel were prompt and knowledgeable in fixing the issue. We ended up staying an extra night (leaving on Christmas morning) I really cannot say enough positive things about the hotel staff. The hotel itself was nice but the staff, in particular Dalia and Priscilla, made our visit that much more memorable.
