Guest Reviews
- Breffini30 (10/5): Booking Fahrenheit Restaurant - We delt with a wonderful staff member. Her name her is Sinead Moloney.
Sinead managed our booking from the moment we came to the hotel reception desk. She made our booking very straight forward.
We booked the Fahrenheit Restaurant for 5:30pm.
I would highly recommend asking to deal with sinead as she did an excellent job.
If you are planning a Birthday, Wedding, or even a Surprise Party. Sinead is your person to go to.
We had a fantastic time in clontarf castle celebrating Sophie’s big day for her confirmation on the 12th of march.
The service and food was outstanding and we couldn’t have been happier. One of the managers towards the end of our meal gave Sophie a beautiful lion teddy bear from the hotel staff to mark her day.
It was such a beautiful touch and ended the day perfectly, it's little things like that, that mean the most especially in times of uncertainty.
It was a lovely experience and sinead offered to do us free personalised menus they were absolutely perfect so thank you so much for doing them for us. We really appreciate it.
Clontarf castle is a very special place along with amazing staff, food and atmosphere. We will most definitely be back again and from Sophie, myself, Alan and all the family thank you so much for making the day so special.
I can see why many people choose to come here.
Kind regards,
Breffini Mooney
- forteinvestigations (10/5): Beautiful & Quiet - Beautiful place to stay. Saul & Silva made our breakfast an excellent experience.
- iindeng (10/5): A great welcome to Ireland - The stay was incredible!!! The rooms were comfy but the most important part was the staff where I met two lovely hard working ladies named Yvonne and Helen and they made me feel so welcome to Ireland and better yet made my experience even more amazing at the Clontarf Castle Hotel.
- Galway_MaureenB (10/5): A magical stay in a real Irish castle - My husband and I recently spent two nights at Clontarf Castle Hotel, and it was truly the highlight of our Dublin trip. If you’re looking for somewhere with a bit of history and character that doesn’t compromise on modern comfort, this is the place. It’s just a short taxi ride from the city center, but it feels like a peaceful world away.
The hotel itself is simply stunning. Walking through the original stone archways into the beautifully designed lobby was such a 'wow' moment. They’ve done a marvelous job of blending the historic Norman architecture with very chic, contemporary interiors.
Our room was wonderfully spacious and impeccably clean. The bed was incredibly comfortable honestly, I haven't slept that well in years! We had a lovely view of the grounds, and the heavy linens and plush pillows felt like such a luxury.
We had dinner at the Fahrenheit Restaurant on our first night, and the setting under the vaulted ceilings was so romantic. The food was top notch, especially the local seafood. We also spent a very cozy evening in the Knights Bar, which has a crackling fire and a fantastic atmosphere for a nightcap.
What really makes this hotel stand out is the staff. Everyone we encountered was so genuinely friendly and professional. From the concierge who gave us excellent tips for exploring the local Clontarf promenade to the breakfast staff who were so attentive, we felt very well looked after.
It’s the perfect spot for a special occasion or just a more unique stay in Dublin. I’ve already told my sisters they have to stay here when they visit next year. A five-star experience from start to finish!
- V4963WKloria (10/5): Excellent stay; excellent service - Leandro has been excellent! Not only as a server but with recommendations.
- C9462MWsuzanneh (10/5): Doesn’t get any better than this! - The Clontarf Castle Hotel is stunning! My friend and I were there for a total of four nights and we loved it! The beauty and history alone make it worth it! However, the staff take it over the top! Everyone was so kind and truly cared about their guests. Our room attendants, Helen and Yvonne are a dynamic duo! They have been there for at least ten years and are the sweetest souls! We loved them! I highly recommend the Clontarf Castle Hotel!!!!
- gretchenman31 (10/5): A castle and a hotel that are just grand! - This is such an amazing hotel!!! The castle part is just so amazing.
All the staff was delightful -- especially Yvonne and Helen (the maids for our room), they just took the time to talk with us and just make sure all our needs were taken care of. The location was great and the rooms were clean and just lovely.
Special shout out....we left Dublin area for Killarney and then we were coming back 2 days later to the same hotel. They were so sweet and let us check in our bigger bags so we wouldn't need to take them on the train!
All in all....one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in!
- H7913GKmaureenl (10/5): 25 yesrs - We have been visiting Clontarf castle at least 25 years
Can not praise the hotel enough
Fabulous in every way
Last stay 29 feb
Highly reccomend and look forward to our next stay assp.
- miguelmQ4079XM (10/5): Awesome! - My fiance and me had a great stay. The receptionists were all lovely and competent, just like Saul and the other servants at breakfast! The appartement was awesome too. I can totally recommend to stay there, we also ate some good steaks and had some fine wines there!
- nicholasbC6974ZF (10/5): Best Experience Ever - Stayed this beautiful hotel in North Dublin 2 weeks ago for 1 night and ended up staying 3 more nights, the experience was so good….and then went back this week for 2 nights.. both times our stay was just unbelievably good.
First of all the staff and the front desk , Mirko, Vigay, Yana, and Gustavo, could not do enough for us. They were kind, very obliging, sorted out any little minor thing we needed, quickly and efficiently… and were extremely professional… (one of the reasons we will definitely book this hotel again..
Bar and Restaurant:
Food excellent as well as staff and a welcoming atmosphere..
Breakfast
Again food excellent, huge choice of breakfast items from porridge smoothies and cereals to hot items such as a full irish.. and the restaurant supervisor was very friendly and accommodating (no queues) and the serving staff the same..
Room
Very clean and the bed was very comfortable as we had a great sleep every time. The bathroom and shower great as well..
Gym
Small but had everything to work every muscle group..
Situated in a beautiful area, you have the seafront, St Annes Park (long walk) , Fairview park all walking distance from the Hotel. Also in Clontarf Village there are loads of artisan shops and a lot of very good restaurants all serving Italian, Thai , Bar food and Carveries.
We will be back!
- I1102GUkevine (10/5): First visit to Ireland - My wife and I came here for our honeymoon after getting married and had a wonderful stay. The attention and warm welcome we received from Mirko from the front desk was delightful. Breakfast was delicious and was very well taken care of by Leandro and his staff. Never felt rushed even if we arrived right before they closed. Knights Bar was nice and cozy and food was marvelous. Thank you guys for an amazing experience at this wonderful castle hotel.
- LimaMonaghan (10/5): Superb - On arrival at the hotel ( my wife and I ) were greeted by a very professional and very helpful gentleman receptionist who showed all his experience of dealing with customers. The ambiance in the foyer was great with a large fire glowing in the fireplace. Our room on the third floor was bright, clean and warm. We dined in the Knights bar and Elaine and the staff couldn’t have been better. The food was superb. The interior of the hotel is fantastic with so much to catch the eye. We had breakfast in the Fahrenheit restaurant and again the staff members were superb and the breakfast delicious. This was definitely one of our best hotel stays ever. From start to finish our visit to Clontarf Castle hotel was excellent. Highly recommended.
- martingH5824FD (10/5): Recommend - Beautiful food very good atmosphere
- koreac2026 (10/5): Such a lovely breakfast - Everything was lovely for breakfast. Leandro was so nice and attentive, and we would definitely visit again.
- shaz3466 (8/5): Good but not perfect - Our stay at Clontarf Castle was good but not perfect. I perhaps had to high an expectation after staying in Castle Leslie. The location was disappointing in the middle of lots of houses I had imagined Castle with wonderful grounds. I read reviews but my own fault I didn’t do more research. We booked in all very easy and friendly.
We had booked bed breakfast and dinner with wine and chocolate in room. However when we got to our attic (4th floor) room no wine or chocolate. After a long journey and hold ups we decided to go to Knights bar for hopefully a sandwich. It was busy but still free tables, lots of staff but not great service. No sandwich!
Room had a a glass bathroom door which I personally don’t like. Room was freezing however maintenance did attend twice and got it sorted. Our wine and chocolate did arrive after I asked.
Just all these little lapses made me wish I had gone to spend my 320 euro somewhere else.
- 905ajc (10/5): Another Great Visit. - I just got back from another great stay at Clontarf Castle, my go-to hotel in Dublin. It's tucked in a lovely, safe spot just outside the city with plenty of easy parking just outside the door.
I've stayed here many times, but this is my first review. Check-in with a friendly young lady from Ukraine was really smooth, thank you for the warm welcome after a complicated flight it was so nice to have such a pleasant check in, and the very helpful chap at checkout made everything effortless. Despite the chilly, wet weather, the hotel felt cozy and the inviting—rooms were spotless as always, beds nice and firm, and housekeeping was quick with extra towels and big smiles.
Breakfast was outstanding, a solid 10/10 with fantastic variety. The host and servers are genuinely the nicest folks! Shoutout to Albert from Barcelona—your cheerful help made our morning special, thanks so much.
I can't recommend Clontarf Castle enough—it's just perfect. Looking forward to May!
- Deisemum1 (10/5): Lovely Stay - I stayed here recently with my husband and had a very enjoyable time. Our son had recommended this hotel to us and it didn't disappoint.
All the staff we engaged with were very welcoming and friendly. Our room was lovely and the bed and pillows were very comfortable and I had one of my best night's sleep.
The food was great, the buffet breakfast was extensive.
I look forward to staying here again.
- Y7238KAjosepho (10/5): Bank Holiday in the Castle - We booked a night in Clontarf to celebrate the Bank Holiday weekend and our recent engagement. We've had an exceptional time and wanted to highlight the excellent food and service in the Fahrenheit restaurant - our server Sophie was exceptional!
- thebigmushroom (10/5): 5 Star service in a beautiful Setting - Took the dine and stay with B&B for our wedding anniversary. I was pleased with our choice. Food was great room was comfortable and the drinks weren't quite as expensive as I expected for such a lovely setting so close to the city.
The staff here are attentive and service is excellent. The bar was very busy the evening we stayed, but the staff noticed we were sitting in the little snug, and came around to make sure we had everything we needed. Our room had a lovely 4 poster bed, coffee and tea were provided and the iron was a steam one, very handy. The only thing I would change would be to have a bath.
I would like to thank the staff for reuniting me with a bit of lost property, they very kindly sent in the post.
Can highly recommend a stay.
- Q8458MGaaronk (10/5): Amazing - An absolutely stunning place with very friendly staff my room was immaculate and the breakfast was amazing ... will be back again
- RichardH290 (10/5): Super Clontarf Castle - Clontarf Castle breakfast service is second to none. Staff are friendly and professional, especially the manager Evan Watson.
- Tourist33290254939 (10/5): Staff are the most valuable asset - Staff are exceedingly helpful and genuinely nice. I would highly recommend the fahrenheit restaurant for a beautiful, relaxing meal. We have additional needs and the staff help us in a quiet manner not drawing attention to us. Reception are super efficient and always remember the special addition requirements so there is never a fuss. From reception to breakfast and even the young gardener, staff could not be more friendly and helpful. This is the perfect place to stay in Dublin.
- theob181 (10/5): My favorito place in Dublin - A local told me this was the best hotel in Dublin that no many People know about and he was absolutely right. Clontarf Castle is a dream come true, you really feel in a medieval castle with the amenities of a 5 star hotel. Every corner is a piece of art. The restaurant is amazing specially for breakfast. But what I think makes this place even more special is the staff. Everyone was amazing, specially Amir from receptionist made my staying even better. Thank you Clontarf Castle Hotel for this amazing experience.
- gailcK6755HX (10/5): Lovely hotel - Lovely hotel, room was great with some corner seating which was a nice bonus. We were there for a chilled night and that was what we got. Staff where really nice and nothing was too much bother. Special thanks to Catherine on reception.
- followherdream (10/5): Absolutely stunning hotel, perfect in every way - The place is beyond our expectations. Initially we just thought it’s cool to stay in a castle but the entire stay was way better. The castle is beautiful. The hotel is very nicely decorated. The room is decent sized and the bed is super comfortable. The food is very good for both breakfast and dinner. And last but definitely not the least, the hotel staff are amazing and the service level is top notch. Strongly recommend it.
- PalaceJohn2011 (8/5): Stunning Property - Stunning property, a real castle. We stayed in December and the hotel / castle and grounds were beautiful dressed for Christmas. The property has a reasonable large car park. Our bedroom was well equipped with comfortable seating area and table to sit at. We only eat in the evening once, in the bar area, we were happy with the food choices, quality and service. Breakfast was very good with a large selection of hot and cold food.
The castle / hotel is situated about a ten minute walk from Clontarf Road where bus run into the City. There is a bus stop near the hotel but that goes around the houses!
- C8983JZchristopheb (10/5): Just fabulous - One of the most beautiful hôtel I have ever seen. The staff is very professionnal and very kind. Special thanks to Yvonne and Helen for help and sympathy.
- alinded2022 (10/5): Galloping to Clontarf Castle again! - For the second time we stayed in this lovely hotel. Beautifully decorated for Christmas and New Year. The food was excellent. With a special thanks to Yvonne and Helen. Bus 130 around the corner brings you to the city centre.
- T8735DZtomm (10/5): An Exceptional hotel . Do not pass it - From the moment we stepped into the castle. We experienced sheer luxury . Our visit was enhanced by the professional staff . They were all friendly , courteous and took time to give us great recommendations and advice
The food was exceptional. Breakfast had a wide and varied menu. Everything from smoked salmon and capers. Meats cheeses . Artisan breads . A full hot buffet with a section for gluten free guests . Dinner was an a la carte menu . Great choices served in a beautiful dining room.
Oner staff member warrants a special mention
Thats Cristian. He patiently helped me with my card payment.
We were 4 friends celebrating a special birthday. We had never been to Clontarf hotel before. On our journey home we agreed we will make this an annual trip !!
..
- FarAway32051640338 (10/5): Great stay in the castle - This was a first time visit to this fantastic hotel for both my wife and me, this was a birthday treat for my wife. The hotel looked fantastic with the Christmas lights on it and in the lobby, check in was very fast and the staff were so brilliant with everything. The room was amazing with a four poster bed really a big hit with the birthday girl. We had dinner in the Fahrenheit restaurant and the food was amazing and same again for breakfast this is such a fantastic building and I would highly recommend this to anyone thinking of a break in Dublin
- Cruiser452108 (10/5): Wonderful stay - We stayed last night on the Winter Retreat special offer, which included dinner. We expected a limited set menu, but that wasn’t the case at all — and the food was genuinely outstanding.
I had the venison to start, followed by the beef and then the chocolate tart. My partner had the mushroom pâté, sea bass, and panna cotta. Every course was beautifully cooked and full of flavour. The venison was the standout for me — exceptional — while my partner said the sea bass was incredible. Nothing disappointed.
Service at dinner was excellent: friendly, professional, efficient, and never intrusive.
On the hotel side, I had booked a deluxe double room and was upgraded for free to a junior suite with a four-poster bed, which was a lovely surprise. The room was beautiful. The only minor drawback was the lack of bedside sockets for charging phones, but that’s a small issue overall.
Breakfast was fantastic, and the staff throughout the hotel — reception and restaurant alike — were genuinely warm and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We were also given a complimentary one-hour late checkout, which was a really nice touch.
Overall, we had a brilliant stay and couldn’t recommend this place more highly. We’ll definitely be back.
- I7858XXannec (10/5): A Christmas Eve Delight 2025 - I had a superb night after arriving at Dublin airport at this stunning hotel. It was a dream come true as it was on my list of things to achieve. I left in Christmas Eve lunch time to visit my Irish family. The Christmas lights and decorations were amazing. Breakfast had loads of choices (I'm gluten free), the set up up was very classy with tea served in a silver teapot. I'm definitely planning to stay for longer next time. 5* experience, Thank you Clontarf Castle *****
- PrincessCatherine497 (4/5): Knights Bar for a cosy ambiance - Was looking forward to my Christmas Eve fish and chips in knights bar, disgusting… like maybe it had gone cold twice before serving and refried twice. Very oily and hard batter. I was very disappointed. I’m glad I had the soup to start which was good. They were busy but not as busy as past Christmas eve’s where food was good. Service was ok. My friends main course was served with our starters. How hard can fish & chips be
- Bro2010 (4/5): Disappointing - On arriving early we checked in with a lovely male employee who informed us our room was ready which was a nice surprise. The room was lovely.
As part of our package, a three-course meal was included. We were informed that bookings were not possible as the bar did not take reservations, which resulted in a lengthy wait to be seated. When we were eventually shown to a table, the seating area was extremely small and uncomfortable, with very limited space. Given how long we had waited, we did not feel comfortable complaining at the time. However, we later noticed a “Reserved” sign on a more suitable table, which was confusing as we had been told reservations were not available.
Breakfast the following morning was equally disappointing. We queued for approximately 30 minutes (from 10:20 to 10:50) and were told there was no seating available. This was despite the fact that the table directly in front of us in the queue had empty seating that had not been set up. After eventually ordering coffees, we waited a further 10 minutes and they never arrived. There was also no hot food left, resulting in guests queuing again just to obtain food. At this point, we chose to leave, check out, and go to a local restaurant for breakfast. I appreciate that the reception staff refunded the breakfast and apologised, which was handled appropriately.
Following our departure, I realised I had accidentally left my coat in the wardrobe. I contacted the hotel to arrange for it to be sent home and was told someone would call me back. This did not happen. I called again later that evening and was advised I would receive a call the next morning, which again did not occur. I subsequently provided my details via email as requested but received no response, despite sending two follow-up emails. After further calls, I was finally informed that my coat was still at the hotel and would be sent, but not in time for Christmas.
While I fully accept responsibility for leaving my coat behind, the prolonged lack of communication significantly delayed its return. Had I known it would take this long, I would have driven back to collect it myself.
The hotel receptionist informed me I would now not have to pay the postage- which I was happy to pay. In the mean time I got two emails to ask for the payment.
The whole experience has put me off considering a return to this hotel, which is a pity as it is a beautiful hotel in a lovely area.
- rose1116 (10/5): Enjoyed our visit...will return! - My son and I stayed overnight at the Clontarf Castle Hotel July 2023. We returned July 2025 for two nights at the start of our Ireland trip. We enjoyed our first visit so much, we wanted to return.
We received a friendly reception upon check-in.
The room was well appointed and comfortable. Hotel dining served delicious and fresh food with excellent service. Housekeeping were proactive.
The hotel property is beautiful and unique located within the outskirts of Dublin. Thank you Clontarf Castle Hotel for an enjoyable stay. Will return!
- Meerkat28 (10/5): Superb service, lovely staff, delightful atmosphere! - It’s been a while since I had the opportunity to visit this superb hotel & I’m so delighted to see that the exemplary standard of service is still very much evident.
During my visit I found every staff member I encountered went out of their way to provide a truly impressive level of sincere & friendly customer service.
From the charming Fred who greeted me warmly to the delicious food served by Fiona to a second order taken by Pelin all provided gold standard service.
Upon leaving I wanted to purchase a small gift for another patron & Vijay at the front desk went out of his way to add some ‘festive sparkle’ to it. This type of ‘going the extra mile’ attitude is what sets Clontarf Castle Hotel apart from the rest!
Bravo to all the team, I won’t leave it too long before I visit again!
- Y655JUritas (10/5): The service at the bar, conducted by Mr. Bruno, stood out for his exemplary dedication and high standard of professional - The common areas, including hallways and dining spaces, were maintained to an exemplary standard of cleanliness, reflecting meticulous care and attention to detail.
- Spousaltravels (10/5): Treated like the king and queen of the Castle! - What a beautiful Castle Hotel. Professional and engaging front desk staff. Great breakfast selection. Lunch and dinner were superb. Attentive waitstaff. Staying at the Clontarf was everything and more than what we expected. Truly a lovely experience, a memorable experience that we will fondly cherish.
- JavierDeIMundo (10/5): Great Place To Stay With Top Notch Service! - What a wonderful time! The perfect ending to our second trip to Ireland after a long drive from the West Coast. We had a fantastic dinner in the Knights Bar thanks to Adrianne who was an absolute delight and treated us like a member of her family! She took such good care of us and the food and hospitality was top notch. We highly recommend Clontarf Castle, you will be in great hands as we were! 5 Stars!
- margaretmD252RU (10/5): Over night stay - What a wonderful stay. Such a beautiful hotel. A big 'thank you' to Catherine on reception for the lovely gifts & birthday card left in our room John & Margaret Morrissey
- p_draigc2025 (10/5): Visiting Dublin - Great spot to meet local friends. Staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Plenty of quiet locations to chat and good food.
- dearbhlao892 (8/5): Very relaxing getaway - We stayed here in October and really enjoyed our stay. From the moment we checked in, the young man on reception was so lovely. He even walked us over to the bar to relax with a drink while our room was being prepared.
The only downside of our experience was the bar man/manager (in the suit). His attitude was quite off-putting — when I politely asked to see the drinks menu after he asked what we wanted, he almost rolled his eyes at me. It wasn’t the nicest first impression and wasn’t the welcoming atmosphere you’d expect.
Our room itself was lovely and spotless.
Dinner that night was absolutely exceptional — the food was unbelievable and the service was top-notch. Adrienne (I think that was her name) was amazing and went above and beyond for us. After dinner we sat in the lounge area by the fire to finish our night which was so cosy.
Breakfast the next morning was also gorgeous — loads of choice and everything was fresh. The man hosting breakfast was so nice and welcoming, which really added to the experience.
Also, a mention to the housekeeping team — my partner forgot his razor and they were more than happy to help him out, which we really appreciated.
Overall I’d give a 4/5. The negative attitude from the bar man/manager was disappointing and wasn’t the nicest start to our getaway, but every other part of our stay really made up for it.
- LoveTravel583035 (8/5): Clontarf Castle - Stunning venue, reception area is beautiful, front of house staff were very professional and friendly. We ate in the Knights Bar on Wednesday evening, bar manager on the night wasn’t the friendliest and we had to ask for our order to be taken, our waiter was very polite and attentive. Our room was lovely with great housekeepers Helen and Yvonne, who always had a kind word, made us feel right at home, and shared their knowledge of Clontarf Castle and things to do in the area.
- KatiJR (10/5): Romantic Stay! - Beautiful hotel and elegant accommodations. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful stay. Absolutely would stay here again!
- karenmZ6388CL (10/5): Expect amazing service! - You can expect the absolute best of service from everyone at this hotel. I have to give a big shout out to Gustavo! He was an angel to us and went beyond all our expectations to help with our car rental. Be sure to ask for him if you need assistance with any car rental issues. It can be confusing if you live out of the country.
- kaza123 (10/5): Wonderful - My husband and I stayed one night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Upon arrival we were welcomed by a lovely lady who wished us happy anniversary and informed us we had been upgraded to the Royal Suite. When we entered the room we were both blown away especially with the anniversary card. Such a lovely personal touch. The room itself was beautiful with a stunning view, everywhere was spotless and the bed was one of the most comfortable hotel beds ive slept in. The food in the Knights Bar was lovely and such a nice atmosphere. The ambience throughout the hotel was just wonderful. Thank you to all at Clontarf Castle Hotel for making our wedding anniversary so special. We will definitely return!
- Discover58276499093 (10/5): Fabulous Stay in a Beautiful Castle - What a beautiful place, I didn’t know where to look next! Our deluxe room was really lovely, comfortable bed and good linen. It’s clean - beautiful furniture and artistic finishes everywhere that doesn’t detract from the historic building
- K5386JZcatherinem (10/5): A new Dublin experience - The Clontarf Castle was such a wonderful experience. A very historic building that has been transformed into a hotel. Rooms were comfortable, the Knights restaurant and bar was perfect. The entire staff was so helpful!! A beautiful area of Dublin close to the Irish Sea.
- Minnemom1 (10/5): Historic escape - My husband and I loved our stay here! It was so neat for us (from the US) to stay in such an old and historic place. We had fun admiring the decor in the lobby and around the hotel. We ate in both the restaurant for breakfast (included with room, highly recommend…so nice to enjoy before heading out for the day) and in the Knights’ Bar for dinner, both were beautiful and food great. Our room was the deluxe king and was well appointed and clean. The only suggestion I would have would be to offer bathrobes in keeping with the “luxury” designation. Appreciated the standard noon checkout. Staff helpful and pleasant. The surrounding neighborhood is quaint, safe, and a 15 minute walk to the train, and another 20 minutes to Howth where we did the Cliff trail and enjoyed the village, highly recommend! We took the bus a few times, about 25 minutes into central Dublin. Hailed taxi through uber, never more than a 3 min wait, cost $15-20 to get to center of town and about 15 minutes. Would recommend for those wanting to enjoy Dublin during the day and retreat to a relaxing environment at night! We honestly enjoyed just walking around the neighborhood and felt like we actually lived there as opposed to the throngs of tourists in Temple Bar, lol!
- 619kimo (6/5): Disappointing Anniversary Meal - Let me preface this by saying that Clontarf Castle IS a lovely venue. It is in a wonderful location and is perfect for afternoon tea or a nice lunch or a wedding. But our meal for our first wedding anniversary could have been a lot better.
My husband and I got married in Clontarf Castle a year ago, and part of our wedding package promised that we were entitled to a free meal in Clontarf Castle for our first anniversary. So we thought 'That would be nice. Let's book a room for that night and we will be able to tie in a short stay as well as the meal'. We were told when booking the room that the Fahrenheit restaurant would actually not be available for our anniversary meal because we would be staying on a Monday, but that we could have a meal in the Knights Bar. We accepted this as the Knights Bar is quite a cosy location.
At reception when we mentioned the meal as we were checking in we were told that as the Knights Bar doesn't require bookings, we could come in at any time that night (we had already booked a reservation for 7), so we thought we could drop in at 6 or so, or whenever we felt hungry. Our room was a wonderful suite, so we were very happy with it. However one slip up was that the reservations team got my husband's name and gender wrong. Initially this was kind of funny, but he was quite annoyed by this, particularly since we had been married in the castle last year and he expected for our details to be on file, and the name on the card we used to pay for the room is his actual name. The card they sent us to congratulate us also had the wrong name on it, as did the screen in our hotel room.
We went down to dinner in the bar at 6 and were standing at the host stand for a few minutes before someone greeted us and showed us to a table by the service station. We thought this was fine, not particularly special but the Knights Bar is a cosy spot and it was a busy Monday night. It took a while for our order to be taken, even our drinks order, and when we eventually got our food and our drinks my stomach was bothering me so I cannot really comment on the meal itself. I wanted the salted caramel cheesecake for dessert, but they were out of it by the time we gave our dessert order. I ordered the apple tart instead - do NOT order this. It is small, it is cold, and it is bland. Go for ice-cream instead.
So the meal was lackluster but still, it was fine, because I had been able to chat with my husband and enjoy his company, so I was content enough with that. However, when my husband went to see about the bill, he was gone for some time. And when he arrived back, he said that he asked about the meal and they charged the the food to the room, and he decided not to push it as we had already gotten a discount on our hotel room.
Now, the ONLY reason we were spending our first anniversary in Clontarf Castle was because we were promised a complimentary meal. Otherwise, we could have, in theory, gone on holiday or stayed in another hotel like the Shelbourne or something. Instead, we came back to Clontarf, and then it turned out that we did NOT get what we were promised. And we were were in a different restaurant to where they usually service people, and the staff kept getting my husband's name wrong, and we were sat next to the service station. I was annoyed. I said as much to my husband as we sat there.
Then as we rose from our seats, a manager showed up. We had not seen this manager all evening. He approached, sheepish looking, and asked us if we were celebrating our anniversary. We said yes. He said that a table had been set up for us in the back part of the Knights Bar (the cosier part). He also said that the meal should have been complimentary. I said yes, I know. I was visibly annoyed by this stage. He then apologised and we explained that we were told we did not have to come to the bar for a certain time, no-one checked for our names or made any indication that there was a special table laid out for us. And then we were charged for the meal anyway. The manager asked if we were staying another night and we replied no, we were only going to stay for the anniversary. That was always the plan. He then refunded the meal, apologised again, and that was that really. The following day we were able to pick up a mug and teddy from the reception, and we were not charged for these as a means of apology. We were also given a box of chocolates.
All this is to say that Clontarf Castle did not make us feel special on our first wedding anniversary. We felt like an afterthought, forgotten about. So if you are planning a wedding in Clontarf Castle, please do not be swayed by the promise of an anniversary meal, because you will not get what you were hoping for. I decided to write this as a kind of warning. Again, Clontarf Castle IS a fine place to stay, and we still had a lovely anniversary. But the meal kind of soured the experience, which is ironic because it was the whole reason we decided to spend our anniversary there. I appreciate that a number of things were done to apologise and to mark our anniversary, but they felt tacked on and poorly organised. The staff themselves? They were polite and nice, but there were some communication issues and a lack of attention to detail when it came to our experience.
- sus2012 (10/5): Beautiful and historic accomodation with modern amenities - Clontarf Castle was great! Such a beautiful place to stay. The staff was helpful and friendly; the restaurant had great ambiance and good food and drinks. We loved the fireplace in the lobby and the "secret" rooms/cubbies you could sit and have a drink. The suite was so spacious and well set-up. The amenities were great, and I loved that the room had electrical outlets for multiple plugs/countries. Very thoughtful. I would definitely stay here again, and only hope to stay longer next time!
- Simon (10/5): - Lovely bright room, immaculately clean and well decorated. The bed was extremely comfortable and so were the sheets and pillows.
This is a very well ran, professional hotel
- 568emerf (10/5): Couples break! - Wow what a fabulous hotel. From the minute we arrived I was blown away with the decor, the rooms and the staff. From reception to dinner to breakfast all staff we met were so attentive and couldnt do enough. I have stayed at many 5 stars and this is definately as nice. Would highly recommend and will be back!
- Beatriz (10/5): - Clontarf Castle Hotel was an unforgettable experience! The blend of historic charm and modern comfort made our stay so special. The staff were attentive, the rooms were beautiful, and the overall atmosphere was magical. Everything was perfect from start to finish — highly recommend for anyone visiting Dublin.
- Paul (10/5): - The Clontarf Castle Hotel was wonderful! From the ease of checking in, the friendliness of the staff, the beauty of the interior, and the amazing room! Absolutely loved staying here! I would definitely recommend staying here when you have time to appreciate the facility and the area.
- Tina (10/5): - Unique stay
- Ashley (10/5): - This was such a cool experience. The hotel was very cool, the dinner was very good. Not too much to do nearby but would stay again. The stay was very friendly. Thank you for the amazing experience
- 4foolsofwonder (10/5): A Perfect mix of an old castle but with modern rooms. - I highly recommend this hotel. It's just a 15 min drive or bus/train ride from Dublin Templa Bar area but tucked into a nice neighborhood right off the Dublin Bay. It's a short drive to several restaurants and pubs and only 25 minutes to the Howth Lighthouse walk. They have a restaurant and bar in the hotel with intimate rooms tucked into the old castle nooks. It's beautiful and modern inside but with the charm of the old castle throughout. Beds were clean and comfortable. Request a room on floors 1 and above, not the grouond floor if you want a view. Great stay!
- Jennifer (8/5): - We very much enjoyed our one-night stay. It was too windy and rainy to check out the property but the inside ambiance was warm and cozy. We found our room very nice and clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food in the Knight's Bar was just okay and service was a bit slow. Expected a bit more in that area for the money. Was very happy with the in-room breakfast we got before leaving. It arrived in time, was good value and tasted great.
- JE (2/5): - Very expensive hotel and we had a nasty surprise. There was wedding in the hotel and we were not informed when we arrived. After returning from dinner at 10:30 pm we went to bed and the noise from the music at the wedding was atrocious. We could not sleep. When my wife complained we were offered free breakfast the next day!!!
- S8055TOkateg (10/5): Beyond expcetations - We had the most wonderful family celebration at Clontarf Castle, where we marked a family member’s 70th birthday in the beautiful Indigo Lounge.
From the very first day of planning to the post-event follow-up, Jordan Arotzarena, the event manager, was absolutely outstanding, attentive, professional, and a true pleasure to work with.
Our guests couldn’t stop praising the reception canapés and buffet selection we chose. The lounge was beautifully arranged, creating the perfect atmosphere for the occasion.
On the day itself, the staff were exceptional — warm, efficient, and always attentive. They ensured every guest felt cared for, glasses were never left empty, and everything ran seamlessly.
We will come back for many more events and stays.
- Cheryl (10/5): - The property was beautiful! Very clean, spacious rooms and comfortable bed. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
- Jennifer (2/5): - Staff and food were terrible. I got food poisoning from their salad.
- Matthew (10/5): - Everything was immaculate, beautiful and comfortable. We had everything we needed or wanted during our stay. The view as you pull up front just amaze every time. I would absolutely stay here again.
- Debra (8/5): - The room was very comfortable and everything on the property was immaculate! It was such a pleasure to stay there!
- billloree (10/5): Vacation Heaven - Absolutely a fantastic place to stay while visiting Ireland. A close walk to the harbor, village shopping and places to eat. The staff, every single one of them, super helpful and friendly. Our room was immaculate clean. Places of historic interest literally right behind the hotel. I cant say enough about this beautiful experience.
- brentdS8030CN (8/5): CIE Tour - As part of a CIE tour I enjoyed my visit and greeting on the TV set. Rooms were comfortable. The only disappointment looking back was the sausages on the Full Irish breakfast. Compared to other places we stayed, the sausages here were more oil and fat and very lean on meat. With all the history, fine decor and great service this was the only negative that stuck out.
- Thomas (10/5): - The check in was easy. Our flight got in early and they were able to accommodate us with only a short wait. Rooms were clean. Service was good. I would definitely stay here again.
- Tracy (10/5): - The staff were fantastic. We arrived early at 9:30am and weren’t scheduled to check in until 3:00pm. The front desk suggested we get breakfast first and once we were finished, they were able to have our room ready at 11:00am. This allowed for a quick nap before our Dublin adventure. The room was clean, quiet and the hotel was far enough away from the heart of Dublin but an easy 10 min taxi ride to city center. Would recommend and would stay again.
- Tracey (10/5): - This is an amazing property and the rooms are absolutely beautiful!
- jeff (10/5): - Great location. Easy access to staff
- Craig (8/5): - Unique blend of historic/modern hotel. Front desk staff were exceptional.
- Robin (10/5): - It was a wonderful overall experience.
- tomgV4078FV (10/5): A Royal Place to Stay - Castle Clontarf was amazing. The food at the Knights Bar was terrific. The staff was fantastic, in particular, Jefferson at the front desk, Louise at the Knight’s Bar, and Marta who served us there. Housekeeping was efficient. The room was comfortable and quaint with a four-poster bed. The entire place is first-class and steeped in history. Parking, although tight, was ample. We would stay there again.
- Jennifer (8/5): - The clontarf Castle hotel is a beautiful property. It was fun to walk around and see all of the little seating areas and nooks to have a drink in. All staff was very nice and helpful. There were two small downsides to staying here. The first one was that we were placed in a room with a door that combines to another room. We were able to hear our neighbor's conversations through the door. We also opted out on having dinner in the castle because there was a strange smell (almost that of canned cat food) coming from the kitchens that was very unappealing. Other than this we had a beautiful night. The hotel is beautifully decorated and it was nice to sit in the lobby by the fireplace enjoying a cocktail.
- PharmDinME (10/5): Wonderful Place for any Celebration! - We booked the Castle experience for our 30th wedding anniversary. I highly recommend it. The experience included Prosecco and chocolates in the room, a 3 course delicious dinner and full Irish breakfast buffet. Robert checked us in and when he learned it was our anniversary he exceeded expectations and sent the attached handwritten note with Champagne and chocolates to our room. Thanks Robert for making our celebration that much more fun!
- Kim (10/5): Fun castle to stay close to airport - Beautifully restored castle with quirky artwork. For the cost I expected a bigger room.
- Li (10/5): - I enjoyed my stay, the pub was welcoming, staff is friendly.
- William (10/5): - Great hotel
- Lara_Janeen (10/5): SPLENDID!! - Our stay was splendid. The hotel is gorgeous and they have done a great job turning the castle into a hotel. The customer service was excellent. Mirko took amazing care of us and went above and beyond. We had issues with our rental car and he smoothed things out for us. The decor and the restaurants were also very unique.
- Paula (10/5): - The hotel was beautifully done, combining the look and feel of a castle with modern amenities. A very cool experience!
- F6597LPpeterk (8/5): Very nice hotel - We stayed here for 2 nights in room 242 on Sept. 13 to 15,2025. The hotel includes part of the original castle and looks grand from the outside and public areas. There is a small garden in the front of the property and a large parking area in front of the hotel. Parking can be tight.
Room 242 is nice, well appointed, but a bit small. There is a nice smallish bathroom that has plenty of counterspace and good water pressure. The king bed was comfortable and there was a/c. The internet was slow.
The room overlooks a roof top covered in solar panels. There was a tea pot and tea in the room( no coffee) as well as a fridge( note the fridge is labeled mini bar but is empty and intended to be used as a fridge).
There is no clock. There is a hairdryer in the bed area which is were you need to use it as there are no outlets in the bathroom.
Breakfast came with our room rate and was very good.
Housekeeping was automatic and they did a good job.
Note to visitors from the USA the electric wall outlets have on off switches you need to turn on to get power.
The staff and check in and out were fine.
The hotel is in a residential area, so you need a car or taxi if you want to do things off-site.
We had a nice stay and would recommend the hotel.
- Heather (8/5): Castle "themed" hotel - Nice big chunk of castle has had a more regular hotel built around it, with a castle theme. Some castle rooms used for the bar and breakfast dining rooms, which are great. But not the guest rooms. We didn't *feel* like we were staying in an actual castle, which was a bit disappointing. Also had a rude experience at Wednesday's breakfast with the short shaven head concierge man pushing our bill at us at our table while we were still eating, and then coming to collect payment while we were still drinking our coffee. The other mornings had a different concierge at breakfast, a quite tall gentleman who was nothing but polite, friendly and professional regardless of how busy it got, and was happy to issue the bill and collect payment on our request when we were completely finished.
- Road61002020002 (10/5): This was a great starting point for our trip! - After an all night flight, we arrived in Dublin and th front desk graciously allowed us to check in early. It was a lovely place - comfortable and rich in history. The restaurant was good for both food and drinks and our server, Marta, was fantastic. The front desk booked our cabs and answered my question we had. I do wish we had been able to stay longer in Dublin and would certainly book the Clontarf again.
- Kathy1101 (10/5): Superior Service standard at Clontarf Castle - Step into Clontarf Castle Hotel on an overcast Dublin day and be warmed immediately by the efficient care and staff greeting. The Medieval-themed decor transports you to a time of majesty and chivalry.
My husband and I had one of our finest meals ever at Fahrenheit restaurant. The service there as well as the Indigo Lounge and Knights Bar was exemplary.
Our room away from home for four nights was welcoming and exceeded our needs. We look forward to a return trip down the road.
- Shannon (10/5): - Beautiful property.
- smdailey929 (10/5): Wonderful Property with All the Things - Beautiful property. Absolutely beautiful property with all the amenities. Hidden in a good location that is quieter than city center but within an easy uber ride to Temple Bar district and city centre. All the touches, fast room service, comfortable beds (except the pillows- they were really uncomfortable for me) and very clean. Service can be a bit slow in the restaurants but all in all, a great experience and we ate there several evenings during our stay. Great bar service with a good selection of cocktails and beers on top. We enjoyed hanging out in the "cave" when its available. The entire hotel is beautifully decorated and highly recommended. I would happily stay there again if in the Dublin area.
- Diana (10/5): - Nice looking hotel, clean comfortable room, breakfast area very good, friendly staff.
- Shannon (8/5): - We enjoyed our stay here. The castle is quaint with nice period touches. Staff were more businesslike than friendly but that did not affect our stay. Our room was mostly clean but the bathroom could have been cleaner. There were a few long black hairs on the floor & they had not emptied the trashcan under the sink.
- William (10/5): - Beautiful property. Great pub and food
- Jennifer (8/5): - The hotel has a lot of character. Dinner I. The bar was excellent!
- Brian (8/5): Great Stay in Clontarf - Great hotels and staff. Location outside city centre which was fine for me but taxis are needed to get to city centre.
- Christine (10/5): Wonderful - We have stayed here several times. We love the history, the decor and the friendly people!
- Jodi (10/5): Beautiful castle hotel - We have had a very nice stay at the Clontarf castle hotel as we are celebrating our 40th anniversary! The staff are all so welcoming. The knights bar food was fabulous. Very comfortable room, slept so good. Looking forward to Breakfast.
- Karen (6/5): - Way overrated !!
Room was subpar. Noise from wedding kept us up past 1:00am - we were on the third floor.
- Anne (10/5): - Beautiful hotel, lively rooms.
- Katherine (10/5): Clontarf Castle hotel Dublin - This was a perfect Castle hotel
- JOSEPH (10/5): - Beautiful hotel
