Instead of apologizing for the mistake, he spoke to me in a disrespectful way and tried to make it sound like it was my fault. That kind of attitude is unacceptable for anyone working in hospitality.
• 849alisons (8/5): Ideal for short stay ! - Location excellent near train and bus station ( not far to drag luggage). Hotel Canal is split with Hotel Walter next door. We stayed in rooms 207 & 209 and ate continental breakfast in Walter. This is basic accommodation no frills. The room with ensuite was clean. Dated decor. Only one plug socket so used an extension lead from home. No kettle in room but a fridge. View over the canal. Great choice for breakfast. Safe in room key available from reception 10 Euro returnable deposit. No lift. Luggage store available in Canal reception area. Staff attentive and polite. Was dubious after reading other reviews but would recommend for a short stay in Venice. Ideal for Vaporetto water bus stations. Co op supermarket nearby. Venice has 400 bridges be prepared for lots of steps. Get a gondola nearby much better experience than near St Marks square.
• 975alexam (2/5): BEWARE - Will not refund your money despite offering free cancellation period - Booked via booking.com cancelled after reading terrible reviews (well within free cancellation period) They ignored my emails and messages. After a month the hotel finally contacted me via WhatsApp and are claiming they can’t process my refund to my credit card and need my pay pal. Now radio silence again. DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM.

• hayleymartin132018 (8/5): You get what you pay for ... - After reading the reviews I was absolutely scared stiff at what I was going to find. Firstly, it's no scam! It's very much a merge of what was 2 hotels into one. Walter and Canal. There are no secrets to this and it's very much open! And remember folks it's a budget hotel, please don't come here expecting more! You'll be disappointed. On arrival, which happened to be right next to the bus stop and taxi rank, we were greeted by a lovely receptionist, he was very welcoming! The first room that we were given was entirely inadequate and full of mould, however the sheets were brand new and the rest of the bedding looked new. The place was clean but tired. We showed him our room and he moved us to something much nicer, he explained that some rooms are problematic due to the humidity. I didn't care at this point as we had a nicer room. If we hadn't of been moved we would have had an issue. Room 108. Photos of the 1st and second room have been posted. After that faff we loved our stay. Lovely location, a big walk to st marks but enjoyed it all. Lovely shops nearby selling food, snacks, souvenirs and canal side restaurants. Back at the room it was clean (room 110) breakfast was warm croissants (mix of fillings) yogurts, breads, coffee etc .. standard continental offering. Dining room looked like it could do with a bit of TLC but I imagine from the location it might get flooded so perhaps they keep it basic for cost. End of the day your not there long your out enjoying yourself! But please! It's 3 star guys .. you get what you pay for
• Perla Noemi (2/5): - Arrived to the hotel and did not get a room, at first they said it’s because payment wasn’t still confirmed by the last time they checked which was same day’s morning, I told them that was not right and showed them emails with date stamp on it that it was all done before already. So they changed the story and was told then I could not get a room because it had rained inside the hotel and they had leaks and flood and I could not be given a room like that, I was sent to a different hotel to make a new reservation at today’s price on the spot and stay there because they were not able to give me a room.

Not user-friendly for older clients or those with disabilities. - No lift, 2 women in our 60's, had to drag our heavy luggage up to the second floor . Little fire safety equipment. • genettej2025 (2/5): Avoid at All Costs – Unsafe, Misrepresented, and Deeply Disappointing - I rarely leave reviews, but I need to warn others about this hotel due to the appalling experience we had. We booked Hotel Canal through Love Holidays based on the pictures, reviews and advertised amenities: a secure room in a central location with air conditioning, a bar, and a garden. However, upon arrival, we were not even taken to the hotel we booked. Instead, we were redirected to Hotel Walter, an unadvertised, unsafe, and run-down property around the corner. The room we were given was completely insecure. Three full-length windows, glass was thin like shed windows, couldn’t lock or even close properly, leaving us feeling incredibly unsafe especially as two women travelling alone. We had to wedge chairs against the windows just to sleep. The tap water ran brown, before clearing, making it unusable for even brushing our teeth. We had to buy bottled water for basic hygiene. The air conditioning was broken and clearly hadn’t worked in a long time, yet the hotel provided fans as if this were an acceptable substitute. The extractor fan in the bathroom didn’t work, resulting in damp and a horrible smell. There were also broken sockets in the room, which were dangerous. The advertised bar and garden did not exist, both key reasons we chose this hotel in the first place. After repeated complaints to hotel, and time soent on love holidays customer service, we were finally moved to Hotel Canal on our last night. That room was closer to what we’d paid for, but by then, two-thirds of our stay had already been ruined. We lost precious time of our short break trying to resolve these issues instead of enjoying our holiday. This entire experience felt like a bait-and-switch, and I would absolutely not recommend this hotel to anyone. It’s misleading, unsafe, and unworthy of the price we paid. Please think twice before booking—there are far better and more honest options available. Love holidays spoke to to hotel and we did end up getting a refund of our hotel cost, after we got back.
• Caracolita40 (2/5): Bad experience - The hotel needs a lot of renovations,shouldn’t even be open. Our room was dirty,with electrical box open on the wall,phone to call to the reception disconnected,bathroom door broken ,bath tube dirty,we could hear everything from the other rooms,windows didn’t open. The only positive aspect is the location and the breakfast was ok. We won’t go back to this hotel.

• grahammapstone (2/5): Hotel Canal and Walter Scam - Beware! - We too are victims of this hotel scam. We booked and paid in October 2024 for a stay in mid July 2025. In April 2025 we were notified by Booking.com that the Hotel was no longer able to accommodate us and the booking was cancelled. no mention was made in any communication of the refund that should have been due. Written communication with the Hotel directly was ignored - no response of any kind. Apart from having to find another hotel - at a much higher price - we had to waste a vast amount of time trying to get a refund through booking.com, who appeared to be obstructing the process at every turn. We did, after a very protracted email marathon, manage to get our money back through booking.com, but not before we had to threaten to bypass the help desk. From the number of comments from people who have had the same experience, it would appear that the Hotel is selling rooms at a cheaper rate well in advance, then cancelling those bookings when the tourist season heats up having resold them at a much higher rate. These people are crooks and con artists, and I strongly advise against booking this Hotel at any price. I would also advise against using booking.com if there is another way to make your booking. A SCAM !!!!
• karennT6806VG (2/5): Scam alert - Hotel Canal takes your booking then sends you to nearby 2 star properties under different hotel names!!! - My booking was at Hotel Canal and when I checked in the receptionist barely could be bothered giving eye contact, didn’t listen when I gave my name, suggested maybe I was at the wrong hotel then finally found my booking. I was taken to a property around the corner under a different name and shown a room which certainly wasn’t what I had booked from pics and reviews on their website - it was a very tiny room with very dated furnishings and maybe 1 star rating??? I went back to reception got eye rolls and some rudeness as I was obviously being difficult, I was then showed a different room in yet again another nearby property under a different name that was also old and tacky but just a larger awful bed. When I went back and said I wasn’t impressed that the pics on the website was for the Hotel canal not the others I was being put in, the manager came and said that’s all they had as they were booked out then proceeded to ignore me. I checked out the next morning after a really ordinary breakfast offering.
• Fambs (4/5): Would not return - The only good thing about this hotel is the location, we were actually booked to stay in ca’dei polo but check in was in this hotel and they said we had been “upgraded”. Air con did not work, they provided 2 fans but the room was very hot, could only open one window and even that was dubious as it felt like it could break at any moment . Bed wasn’t too bad comfort wise but the bed cover was stained . Shower cover wasn’t clean. No rail in the wardrobe (eventually sorted on the last night). Electrics seem like they could trip at any point.

Wish I had read more reviews for here. To be avoided. No apology from the hotel and no prompt refund of my payment from 6 months ago.
• pursonalmail (2/5): Downright disgraceful - We booked 7 months ago to check in on May 9th until 12th. Today I got an email out of the blue saying it had been cancelled. I had booked through Booking.com and can get nowhere with them trying to find out what has happened. Thankfully, I have been able to secure an Airbnb on the Lido. I have been an independant traveller for over 30 years and have never had this happen

As a result, I had to pay more than a double for another booking in another place. No apology or proper explanation from the hotel. They did not even bother to reply to our complaint.
• Mark (10/5): - The hotel is very close to everything you need train 10 mins across the bridge eats down the road ferry 7 mins airport bus 10 water taxi 2 min yes it’s old but so is everything it’s a friendly place staff are very helpful breakfast is good good choice
• Roam46169572570 (6/5): Unfriendly, not competent - Booked a room with “the canal view” in advance. Was “upgraded” on the day of my arrival in another building. They refused to change the room, after I said, that it’s not ok, we had to do a 10 min walk to the breakfast room. One of the receptionist was completely unfriendly. Rolled her eyes, and smirked to her colleague all the time we spoke. The room was good though. The breakfast was not bad for that price. Afterwards couldn’t even leave a review on booking, where I booked a room, because of “technical issues”.
• 137nazmulh (10/5): Great location - Hotel Canal is well-located on the Grand Canal, near the train and bus stations, making it convenient for travelers. The Venetian-style decor adds charm, and the rates are budget-friendly but there’s no elevator. A good option for location.

Later in November I cancelled my booking due to changed plans and still now I did not receive my prepayment back, they are ignoring me, wrote many times!!

Their breakfast is rich and abundant. Staff is always available and are very friendly. Best option, for a few of nights.

Stairs weren’t in the best condition as well. 3. Molds everywhere. It was disgusting. Tiles are cracked, place is very run down. 4. The pictures on the sites are deceiving. 5. Smells awfull

We were made aware of that before booking but it was a little more than expected. The location was excellent, very close to the bus for airport connection and across the canal from the train station. There are lots of places to eat but I think I would stay elsewhere on my next trip to Venice.

The hotel is a bit worn but has lots of charm. the room and bathroom were large. there was a fan for air conditioning and windows that open (not surprising for Europe). the only complaint was no hot water in the morning for a shower.

• Stephen (2/5): - There was a picture of the room when we made our reservation, and we could tell it was the room directly above the lobby. However, when we arrived just after midnight, the receptionist booked us in, and then walked us blocks away to another building. We had our family, bags, and a wheelchair, and there was a non-wheelchair-friendly bridge at the edge of each of those 'blocks.' So, this was not the great end to a long and painful travel day (the airlines lost four of our five bags). The room was clean, and it also faced the canal. However, we had specifically booked a room with air conditioning. This room has air conditioning, but it barely work. So, it was the same as not having air conditioning. The biggest disappointment was the front desk staff. The airlines finally delivered our lost luggage two days later, but the front desk didn't tell us. Good thing we had Apple AirTags! Then, when asking for info to get around town, and to get to our Cruise pickup location, the two front desk staff barely seemed interested. We asked for the best option to get to our destination. Is the bus better? Or water taxi? Or...? They said, 'sure.' Ugh! Luckily, there were other tourists on the street that were more helpful!
• SANDRA (4/5): - This property is not what you expect. no air conditioning Very old and out dated Falling apart Bathroom had mould on shower curtain that was half hanging off stains on the wall cracks in the shower. they need to do abit of TLC and it could be a nice property. it is walking distance to alot of places.

• Amanda (2/5): - DO NOT STAY HERE!!! on arriving requested inspection of the room which smelt of Tabacco and there was mould and water damage on the ceiling. The room was dark and dingy. The entry was down the side of the Hôtel separate from the reception area. We asked for a room change but were told there were no rooms available so we offered pay for 1 nights accommodation as cancellation of our booking however this was not accepted. We lost 3 nights of accommodation and rebooked elsewhere. Look elsewhere as this is barely a 1 star property

• Andrew (2/5): - We had to move out after one night because there was no working air conditioning and we had bug bites all over due to leaving the windows open. The rooms smelt heavily of mold, mildew, or perfumes, which may have attracted all the bugs. We initially thought it might be bed bugs. Still don’t know if it might be. This hotel is similar to a camping ground than a hotel in Venice. Very disappointed. Wish I could get my money back for the night we didn’t stay there.
• Bernard (4/5): - Double bed in a single room was not comfortable for 2 people. Bed sheets barely covered the top of the bed and a/c controls are destroyed so not usable. If the room size had been adequate it would have been more tolerable. Had to turn the bed sheet sideways so two poeple could have a little, an experience!
• Colin (8/5): Nice old style Venetian hotel - If you are coming from the train station you have to go up & over a big bridge with lots of steps. There are guys there usually you can pay to carry your luggage. If you are coming by bus to Piazzle Roma you stay on this side of the big bridge & go under & around to the right & over 2 smaller bridges,once over the second bridge the hotel is on your right facing the grand hotel. Don’t rely on Google maps as it doesn’t work properly in Venice.

• Elier (2/5): - Where do i begin. For starters some of the staff are rude and this is even when u ask nicely. Second the rooms condition is utterly disgusting. Dog hair on the bed, mold in the shower curtains, absolute zero air conditioning so u have to open the windows. Which means u will get eaten alive by the mosquitos. It takes a while for the water in the shower to get warm. Beddings are stained. The rooms look nothing like the pics, having all the walls stained, the chair was about to break. Only one outlet to charge ur devices. This is the type of place where u go when u have no money worse than a motel.
• Alan (6/5): Average at best - Lovely area but the hotel was rustic to say the least, rooms are average sized for the area i would say but the view was awful, the bathroom and bedrooms are dirty, dusty and so dated they must of got the furniture out of marco polos house, staff are lovely and accommodating but a good lick of paint, a clean and some refurbishment wouldnt go a miss, overall 3 out of 5
• Nicky (6/5): A weekend in Venice - Firstly i want to say that the staff at the hotel were lovely. Friendly, helpful and very welcoming. It is in a brilliant location near all the transport links so very easy to get everywhere The hotel is very tired and they seem to be renovating. I think the only rooms already completed are the ones pictured on the website. Unfortunately the first room we were allocated was not suitable for 2 people and should be resigned to single occupancy. I would classify a double room as both people being able to get in and out of bed without having to climb over their partner because the bed is against the wall with a 1ft gap down the other side. We asked to be moved which we were without any fuss. The second room was much better in size though in need of redecoration a more comfortable bed and bedding. The other disappointment was the bar was not in use and neither was the courtyard due to renovations. It was a real shame that we were unable to purchase a drink and socialise a little within the hotel. They had a fridge in which they had bottles of larger, individual bottles of bellini and cans of coke but once purchased at reception the only place to go was your room. Please open your bar and courtyard as soon as possible. If not update your website to say that they are currently closed. I would stay here again but only if the bar and courtyard are open.

• Yunfeng (10/5): Enjoyed 2-night stay and better than expected - Enjoyed our two-night stay and had better experience than I expected based on reviews, which might be due to off season right now. Breakfast space is good, and all staffs were nice and helpful. Definitely I would recommend this hotel.
• RAUL (8/5): - This is a 3 stars hotel located at good distance of the train station and the center of the city. Facilities need some renovation. Staff is kind. Price was convinient.

• Sheena (6/5): - The location of this hotel is wonderful. It was a 4 minute walk from the train station to the hotel. The view from the front rooms was amazing! We had a corner room with 2 windows that overlooked the grand canal and 2 bridges. For the price you couldn't ask for a better location or view. The rooms were what you would expect for the price. They could have used a better cleaning on the pillows & blankets, but again what we expected for the price. There is a safe in the room but you need to pay a 10 Euro fee in cash to the front desk to get the key. We tried to return our key and get our cash back but the front desk was closed and therefore we were told we could not get our money back. If we knew that in advance we would have returned the key the night before. Breakfast in the morning was conveniently location on the first floor of the hotel. It was average with a machine that made the coffee/espresso/cappuccino for you. Overall it was what we expected for the money paid.

• Amir (2/5): - At first we had a room in second floor, but the ceiling in front of the room door was fallen, so we asked for a new room, they gave us a room in third floor which was the worst room ever in any hotel in any country I have been so far. The room was small, the table the chair, windows, airconditioner, all was in a terrible state. I suggest any one who want to rent a room in this hotel to think again, the price is cheap in that area, but it is better to pay a bit more and have a good time. The breakfast was good.

• kate (2/5): DONT BOOK. DIRTY and not as described - tHi hotel was not as described by hotels .com. It was very run down, dirty and trip hazards everywhere. DONT BOOK. I sat on the bed - which was sagging and lumpy!! We did not stay and although we requested a refund we did not receive this. The front of house were rude and did not care. we booked this hotel as we had an early flight in the morning and wanted to be close to get a taxi.
• Graham (6/5): Cheap and cheerful - One night stay due to delayed flight. Went for a cheap a cheerful hotel and that’s exactly what we got. This hotel has a 5* position on the canal but leads a lot of investment. It is very rundown, and the owners just need to cherish it. Perfect position from the train and bus station after a long day it was nice to get to the hotel. The reception was straightforward but not over friendly. Second floor room, no elevator and two steep flights of stairs. A/C working in the room. Canal view but curtains didn’t close. Bathroom mouldy, shower not working, no plug in the sink and flush mechanism falling off the wall. One out of two showers not working. Bed ok and got good sleep. Breakfast simple and chaotic with self help. Checkout easy and they kept bags until we went to the airport. If you want a cheap and cheerful hotel then this is ok but I wouldn’t go back voluntarily
• Paulina (6/5): - Staff is very friendly the Hotel is clean, but everything is very very old. TV wasn't working. WiFi only works in the lobby. Is good if you are staying for 1 or 2 nights. Everything is walking distance.

• Jane (6/5): Stay away - Don’t go to this hotel!! -When we arrived the ladies at the reception were doing each other fingers and having an argument as we were checking in!!! -The room itself is old and damaged. -The air conditioning does not work -We asked for a double bed we got 2 single beds. -‘The view’ is nice but you can’t enjoy it because you are in the street as soon as you open the window everyone can see you -The breakfast was mediocre (bread, some spreads, cakes and the most disgusting juice I have ever drank) -The worst part is the noise you cannot sleep, you can hear everything at night from the street and in the morning you can hear everyone checking out and eating their breakfast. Not worth the price stay away.

• John (6/5): - Breakfast was good. Room location was not what we requested. Two steep flights of stairs carrying our own luggage. We are in our mid 70s. No one to help. Close to aerobus, and vaporettos, but carrying luggage up bridge steps. not fun
• Betty-Anne (2/5): - Do not stay here! The hotel should be rated at less than a 1 star. Only redeeming quality is the location is right on the canal. Other than that, it is filthy, rundown, in disrepair, mold in the bathrooms, filthy floors, wires and cables hanging out of the wall sockets, lightbulbs burnt out, common areas unkept and filthy, furniture in breakfast area falling apart, food was fruit from a can, croissants gooey and uncooked. Hotel wifi doesn't work. Rude hotel staff provided an alternate "public wifi" network to try with weak security. Only worked in lobby, not in rooms. Asked to speak to manager, who never showed up.
• Carl Jack (8/5): - Perfect location. Good breakfast. Reception, I would suggest, needs training to be customer friendly. At least ask how can they be at help.
• MARIA (2/5): - The room was in awful condition air conditioning not working, decaying walls and even mold l checked out right away. Health hazard.

• Graeme (2/5): Ray Hotel - Absolutely disgusting excuse for a hotel. Wouldn’t even let a Rat stay here. Complete room was filthy, stench of damp, mould everywhere, curtains ripped and didn’t close, waited 5 minutes to even check in as the receptionist was too busy trying to decide between KFC or Burger King for her dinner. Checked in and out within 15 minutes. The place should be closed down.

• John (4/5): - Location is very close to the railway station and other public transport. Wifi is not available in the room and is only available near the reception area. They shouldn’t be providing wrong information for the services they don’t provide. Toilet tissue was missing and heater was not working properly and can be a concern during winter. Breakfast was good.
• Karen (6/5): - It was convenient to rail terminal and staff was very friendly. Low rating is due to wi-fi only working couple hours and sheets had stains.
• Lorian (6/5): - The hotel looks old and in bad conditions, it was clean, but the bad conditions of it makes it look dirty.
