• Navigator54694617384 (2/5): Basic af - you pay for 0 frills then pay some more - The only reason this hotel gets any stars at all is because I have to rate at least a “1”. I have to say that it is clean and somewhat modern. That’s about the only thing going for it other than location. If you’re trying to do anything other than sleep here though, well f%#
• C3081KLjessek (2/5): Disappointing. - A true disappointment. The overpriced hotel provided cell like rooms, the worst being the ones on the first floor...or you know the basement. They are small, cold and hard and nearly windowless...unless you rase the black shades so people walking by on the street can wave at you. The staff is brusque and the venue is cramped over all. The location directly on House is convenient...but only to 24 hour street noise.

• 422gretchenb (2/5): Not worth your money - My husband and I visit NYC once a year and have stayed in a lot of different hotels (chain & boutique) as well as Airbnb in different areas. This was one of the worst. The website states there is a safe, iPhone clock with phone charger, free WiFi, coffee pot in each room plus 2 bottles of water per night. When we checked in we had to pay a $17.21 fee which we were told was a facilities fee for WiFi (even though it states on the website it’s free), the water bottles we never received and filtered water. We asked 3 different employees about our bottles of water and one had no idea that was a thing, the other one said she’d have to look into it and the last one said they hadn’t gotten their “shipment” in and stated there’s tap water in the lounge area. We didn’t even mention about the safe or lack of clock. Our room did not have a pillow top mattress nor the nice curtains in the pictures. It would have been nice to have had a mini fridge. We also had a major drainage issue in our tub. It took over 10 minutes to drain after just one 10 minute shower. I never leave a negative review but this was not a great hotel and I would not stay here again nor recommend it to anyone else.
• Jenny (8/5): Great spot in the East Village - As someone who isn't fussy about hotels, The Gatsby Hotel was great. The AC was perfection, the bed was comfortable, and the location was exactly what I needed. The walls were a little thin but NYC is a loud city. Housekeeping came every day with new towels, and a made bed. I wish they had swept the floors, but otherwise, no complaints.

• ltarazi (2/5): Nothing Works and No Help or Effort to Fix! - Extremely Disappointing Stay – Would Not Recommend I had an overall poor experience at this property and will not be returning. I chose this hotel solely based on its proximity to where I needed to be. The total cost for a 3-night stay was $1,156.22, with an additional $51.63 charged at check-in—referred to inconsistently by staff as either a “hotel fee” or an “incidental hold,” depending on whom I spoke with. I will return to this point later. Upon arrival, I found the entrance confusing and poorly marked. The automatic doors were locked, requiring guests to either use a key or press a call button and hope for a response. After waiting several minutes, I was eventually let in. I had booked my reservation through American Express Travel, linked directly from my AMEX card. During check-in, I was met by a front desk employee named Samantha, who proceeded to lecture me about the drawbacks of using third-party booking sites such as "Experian" (presumably she meant Expedia), claiming that reservations made through such platforms are not cancellable. My printed reservation confirmation clearly stated that it was fully cancellable, but I chose not to engage as I had no intention of canceling. After a long day of moving a family member into a new apartment, I simply wanted to relax. Upon entering my room, I discovered the following issues: The television did not work. The hotel phone was inoperable. WiFi was extremely unreliable. The main light bulb in the room was burnt out. I returned to the front desk to report these issues. Samantha offered to move me to another room, but I declined due to exhaustion and instead asked that maintenance address the problems the next day. After troubleshooting with my husband (an IT professional), we concluded that the error message on the television suggested the property had not paid its DirecTV bill. The next morning, I spoke with another guest in the elevator who confirmed that his TV and hotel phone were also non-functional. I stopped by the front desk to report the ongoing issues again, and staff acknowledged that there were widespread problems with both phone and TV service, which they claimed they were "working on." That evening, I returned to find that the issues persisted. Again, no resolution. That night, my stay was further disrupted by a loud, unsupervised party involving underage guests running through the halls, slamming doors, and congregating near the stairwell adjacent to my room. I attempted to contact the front desk, but again—no functioning hotel phone, and repeated calls from my cell phone to the main line went unanswered. The following morning, I discovered there was no toilet paper in the room. I attempted to contact the front desk again by phone (cell and hotel line), but received no response. I was forced to go down to the lobby in person. It took an unreasonable amount of time for the attendant to locate a roll. When I asked for two rolls, he hesitated but eventually complied. My third day was equally disappointing: persistent issues with room lighting, no improvement to water pressure, and a shower that alternated only between scalding hot or freezing cold—with no in-between setting. It consistently took over 10 minutes to produce any hot water. I raised my concerns with every front desk staff member I encountered throughout the stay. Samantha, in particular, received multiple complaints from me, though I also dealt with at least two other staff members whose names I did not catch. On the final night, a young male employee assured me that I would receive a partial refund at checkout due to the numerous unresolved issues. At checkout the next morning, I was again met by Samantha, who stated that no refund would be provided and that there were no notes on my account indicating any such arrangement. I asked to speak to the General Manager, Dario, whom I had left a voicemail for on Day 2 of my stay and never heard back from. When Dario was reached by phone, he was dismissive, offered no apology, and reiterated that no refund would be issued. His reasoning was that because the reservation had been prepaid, he was unable to process any refund—even for the $51.63 charge at check-in, which had been described as either a hotel fee or an incidental hold. When I inquired about that charge—pointing out that I had not incurred any incidentals and, in fact, had not even been provided the opportunity to do so—he again refused. Following the stay, I contacted American Express. They spoke with Dario directly and reported experiencing the same dismissive attitude. At that point, Dario apparently agreed to refund the $51.63, though I have yet to receive confirmation that the refund has been processed. Conclusion: This property is poorly managed, communication is inconsistent at best, and guest concerns are routinely ignored. The lack of basic functionality (TV, phone, internet), unreliable staff, and absence of meaningful customer service rendered this stay completely unacceptable—particularly at this price point. I strongly advise others to seek alternative accommodations.
• Kim (2/5): - The rate was ridiculously high for this bare bones accommodation. The room itself had more of an old dorm vibe rather than a boutique hotel feel. The windows are old and do nothing to keep out the noise of a very busy street. There are no curtains to keep out light. Service was nonexistent. The television did not work and there was no support to repair it. I would not stay here again and would advise anyone looking for a decent night's sleep to look elsewhere.
• Komal (2/5): Stay somewhere else - Location cannot be better if you want to explore East Village. The reception staff was very helpful and friendly. However, their bathrooms seriously need work. Sink water has barely any pressure and so does the shower - if you can figure out how to turn on the shower without calling the reception. The water does not drain quickly in the bathtub so you have to stand in your own soapy water while taking a shower - yikes! There was dirt and hair on the room floor so they need to work on that too. I paid $350+ for 1 night because I wanted to stay in East Village but I would rather pay $500 and stay at a better hotel or stay somewhere slightly far for the same price or less.

• 894annettec (8/5): Next to a beautiful park, but…. - This is a great hotel; small, but close to the Bowery area. Room was clean and well maintained, staff is friendly. The only negative is something the hotel can’t do anything about - the noise from the park across the street! Our room was directly across from the basketball court, which was busy at all hours (we stayed 3 nights). Loud music and a few times there was a DJ or announcer of some sort. Just be forewarned to bring good earplugs! If not for the noise this would be a 5 star rating.

• Haley (2/5): So dirty we immediately left - This place was disgusting! We couldn’t even stay here - immediately checked out and found a new, much nicer, and even cheaper hotel. The room had food crumbs all over the floor, stains on the sheets/pillowcases, and just overall dirt and grime everywhere. When we talked to the front desk about wanting to leave, they came up to our room with a handheld vacuum to try to clean the floors… which obviously did nothing. Staff was at least nice so that was the only redeeming quality. Would not recommend staying here when there are so many other options.

The tv did not work. The shower did not have hot water. My room had one window and it was obstructed by a noisy AC unit.

• Lisa (6/5): Items stolen out of my room - An H&M bag with gifts for my family was STOLEN out of my room AFTER housekeeping went in and I told the front desk prior to that I did NOT want housekeeping during my stay. Beds were comfortable, but had to call twice for assistance with TV not working properly at night and TV screen was so dark you could barely see it. It is very expensive to stay here over Fourth of July w/e so getting something stolen from my room is very disappointing. I expect a refund for the $40 worth of gifts in the bag. Complimentary coffee in the lobby was nice but communication from front desk to housekeeping needs to improve and should never be stealing in a hotel room.

• N9849SLpetero (2/5): Awful, charged 315 for essentially a giant middle finger when I arrived. Do not recommend. - Garbage hotel, the hotel canceled my reservation because I showed up 30 mins late from overnight trip from cleveland in the early am. I was stuck in Jersey traffic. I paid for whole weekend and they charged me a day in advance. Only to show up with my room given away because "i was a no show". I gave them notice I was going to potentially be late and they "noted" it but apparently that note is worthless. They held 1st day money and gave refund for remainder of reservation but now I'm stuck in NYC with no hotel. Manager is unavailable by phone, email only. I would give this place a negative if I could for terrible service. I want management to call me, they don't even pick up phone. I called 6 times this morning.
• TOBI (10/5): - This is a great choice for a budget hotel in NYC. It is very clean and the staff was friendly. The bed was super comfortable. They can hold your bag during the day. Rooms are no frills and very small.
• Miron (6/5): - The property is clean and very conveniently located amongst many restaurants. The room was clean but the facilities overall were worn out and you can see and feel the wear. The outlets were so loose they could not hold a plug inserted. The elevator broke down during one day. There was no hand soap provided for the rooms. The body wash was in single-use plastic. The clothes iron had a big gunky stain, and the ironing board had holes.
• Zack (4/5): - It was a really poor experience for the price paid -- staff were super friendly, but upon check in I was assigned a room which someone else was inside. After this was resolved, there was no hot water -- and it took me 3 reception visits and 90 minutes of wasted time to get it working -- I was told the pump doesn't work well. The same happened in the morning, so I was late for my meeting. Wifi was also disappointing for a central NYC hotel, getting average 1mb -- I could barely watch YouTube buffer free. Floors were desperately in need of a deep clean, my feet were black - so many random hairs, nail clippings and dirt from previous guests. If the rate had been 25-30% lower, I would have expected some more of these challenges -- but at this rate it's not acceptable.

• starli3 (10/5): Major shoutout to Kristal, the front desk manager - I normally don't write reviews for hotels but I wanted to write one and give a shoutout to Kristal, the front desk manager. We got into NYC after a crazy day of traveling and were completely exhausted. The room we were assigned was unfortunately unusually loud and I asked Kristal if we could switch rooms. She took a look, did some research, and was able to get us a new room that was significantly more quiet and had a beautiful view of the city! We stayed for several days so this made a huge difference in our stay. She really didn't have to do that for us so I really appreciate that she went above and beyond on this. Major props to Kristal! Overall, the new room itself was great! It was clean and had a beautiful view of the city. I wish they provided a small fridge. Other than that, I would definitely stay here again!

• BrunoN836 (2/5): Room with no windows for 400 usd??? - I had an extremely disappointing experience at the Gatsby Hotel in New York. I booked a room for around $400 for one night, based on photos that showed a bright, stylish space with windows. Instead, I was placed in a basement-level room (floor -1) with no windows, poor lighting, and constant noise—both from the street and what sounded like construction coming from the elevator shaft. The water took over 10 minutes to heat up, and the pressure was incredibly weak. When I complained at the front desk, I was told there was nothing they could do and that no other rooms were available. This is unacceptable. If there’s a chance that a guest might be placed in a windowless basement room, it should be clearly disclosed at the time of booking—and charged at a significantly lower rate. I felt misled and overcharged. This was a terrible experience, and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. It reflects poorly on New York’s hospitality standards.

• A5774VBthomask (10/5): Good inexpensive hotel - This is an inexpensive and well-maintained hotel in a great location on the border of the East Village, Lower East Side, and SoHo. If you are looking for a luxurious spa vacation, this isn’t the place—and that was great for me because I wasn’t. I wanted what I got: a helpful person at the desk, named Peter when I stayed; clean elevator; clean room, bed, and bathroom; functional air conditioning. Will definitely be returning when my travels take me back to New York City.

• Alexis (6/5): - Ok stay. Friendly staff. The tv in our bedroom did not work and I asked for them to fix it or give me another room. Mark, the guy who was working at night told me he'd try to fix it or give me a partial refund. The last day of the stay they got the cable connection to work, but there weren't any stations available that were available to watch a show or movie. The channels that were available were all advertising or promotional channels. I go to sleep with the tv on, so this was an important part of booking a room. I asked the new night guy about it and he had no idea about the tv having an issue. Just seemed like communication wasn't great between staff or managers, however, very friendly to me and trying to get it fixed each time. They just never got it fixed for me to watch a movie or show. I also didn't get a partial refund like I was told either. The property also said it had windows, which I wanted, but the rooms window were completely blocked by an air conditioning unit and if there were a fire, there would be no way to get out due to this. The room I got was on the bottom floor (104) and that is a really place in the building to have a room. It's right by the street and you can hear everything happening, from people walking by to cars, etc. all hours of the day. Did not sleep super well. The room was also very small. It would be hard to have a full sized suitcase in the room to get stuff out of. Thankfully I only had a small carry on. 2 ft on side of bed.
• Diana (4/5): - The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and the location is highly convenient. Very nice complimentary coffe & tea station. However, the cleanliness of the rooms needs improvement. I was downgraded from a ground floor Queen suite to a basement single bed suite due to unclean flooring in the original suite. Unfortunately, the basement suite also did not appear thoroughly cleaned. While it didn’t have visible crumbs or clusters of dust and hair like the first room, the floors still didn’t seem mopped. Based on my experience with both suites, regular and thorough floor cleaning does not appear to be a standard practice. Additionally, there was no hot water available in the evening. I was advised to let it run for 15–20 minutes, but even after that, there was still no hot water. Pro-tip - in the morning you can get your warm shower if you let water run for 5min. Unfortunately, quite disappointing experience for 800 CAD for 2 nights. I know New York is expensive, but still...

• Bryan (10/5): - The room is very small but very clean and comfortable, the staff is very friendly and professional, and the location and price are amazing. It's no-frills, but the service, location, and comfort are excellent.
• Ada (8/5): - I liked that the staff were really nice, they were respectful and very helpful with everything I needed. What I didn’t like was having to call maintenance on the first night on the second day for things that could’ve been checked before my stay. Overall it was a nice spot to stay at surrounded by a lot of areas to shop and eat.

• Z5475TAbiancag (10/5): Very good - The location of this hotel is really great! It’s in the heart of SoHo next to several great bars and shops. The shops down Broadway are just a 10-15 minute walk away. It’s very clean and the people at the front desk are very nice. Krystal stands out at the front desk! Very helpful and patient!
• Amber (6/5): - We had a particular experience with other guests smoking in the room next door and the common spaces. There was a party in an adjacent room, and none of us slept all night. The staff were very lovely and helpful.
• S141IEsharonn (10/5): Small and Perfect !! - This quaint little hotel in New York City was perfect for me, a solo traveler. The front desk had someone there at all times and they were very pleasant. They also had a wonderful room to the side with coffee, hot water where you could sit and relax before or after your day. The extras in the bathroom were organic and very nice. I want to point out that the air conditioning system worked perfectly, which enabled me to sleep very well. I would definitely come back to this hotel again.

Staff especially Kristal were superb,she stored out luggage after checkel out as we had a late flight. Location is excellent. Despite some reviews, it fell very safe. Housekeeping was brilliant also, room was immaculate each day. Can not recommend this hotel and staff enough
• angiewG4321TO (10/5): Amazing hotel.... - My say at The GATSBY HOTEL for 1 night, before getting on the Greyhound. To come home to Warren R.I ... Was amazing the staff was awesome! I got to pay for my booking, a day in advance, was my first Hotel stay in NYC! At checkout Kristal was awesome!

• S9040XOjosephg (2/5): Extreme Last Resort - Small room, everything broken, and they tacked on extra charges at the end that I found on my credit card statement. Only worth it if you absolutely need a place to stay and won't spend any time in the room. Basically a hostel. Asked for an ironing board and it was one of those mini ones that did not good. Dirt and old paint peeling in rooms and gross bathrooms
• alexistJ3560YI (8/5): Great value - Great value for ~$130/night. Didn’t personally interact with staff very much, but when I did everyone was so friendly and helpful. Buzzer / key card access to enter building and room if you’re concerned about safety. Very small snack selection to purchase from inside hotel, but there’s plenty just outside to buy from in the area. Only small issue was with how long it took the shower water to heat up, but I would definitely stay here again.

We didn’t spend much time in the hotel itself but we were on the second floor and neither of us had an issue with noise. Basically right on top of a subway stop.

• Scenic47303186885 (10/5): Great stay at the Gatsby (Lower East Side) - Great location. Close to the subway and NYU Room was clean and the staff is very friendly. Although small, the rooms are comfortable and simply appointed. Kristal at the front desk was AMAZING. Her customer service was above and beyond! Thank you to her !
• 371murrayk (10/5): Will stay again. - Nice and clean. Friendly, helpful service! Will gladly stay here again! We asked about a place to eat for breakfast. The staff gave two great options and we had a nice meal. The location is very easy to navigate walking or taking public transit. Very good place. If you aren’t used to a bit of noise it could be tough to sleep. But that wasn’t a big deal for us.
• 313lalitab (10/5): Great Location, Clean and Comfortable Room, Friendly Staff! - Hotel room was clean and comfortable. Can be a little tight on closet space for 2 people but we made it work. Everyone at the front desk was super friendly and accommodating. Location was very central and convenient, plenty to do and walkable area. We also were able to take advantage of the late checkout option which was super helpful for our travels. Would definitely come back again!
• Chance (10/5): My future reservations - I was greeted warmly by the front desk personnel and immediately assigned to the hotel room. I was very pleased with the set-up and cleanliness of the entire facilily that I had access to. I would strongly recommend that my future stays in the Gatsby hotel room be on the 6th floor, preferably with an inside room away from the street traffic noises.

Clean room comfortable bed I planned for one night and ended up staying two more extra nights and the location is close to everything too!
• KesSmith1728 (10/5): Amazing Customer service - Kristal at the front desk was amazing and very helpful. Gave us a lot of information and what there was to do in the area. We arrived a little early and she was able to accommodate us in checking us in early. The rooms were small but enough space for 2. Beds are super comfy and soft, felt like sleeping on feathers. We will definitely be coming back to this hotel.

Loved the Chris Riggs murals outside & funky foyer decor. So central for transport, super easy to get anywhere. Teensy room & noisy Sat night neighbours & street sounds, but I expected that.

• Verified traveler (4/5): No hot water, loud inside and out - Loud inside and out. The park nextdoor and its parties are out of the hotels control. But other sounds are not: the elevator sounding an alarm as the door closes at each floor. Every room door needing to be slammed shut. The complimentary earplugs on my bedside table were a nice touch, but not nice enough. Also: I had to run the water for 10 minutes before the faucet leaked out luke warm water. No thanks.

• Michael (2/5): - Walls a paper thin. Outside noise makes it nearly impossible to sleep if you're on a street side. Rooms are alarmingly small. TV didn't work. Have to use ring doorbell to enter the hotel and their system was down so it was a 10 minute wait until someone came down and manually open the lobby door
• Nina (8/5): - We had a three nights stay at the Gatsby Hotel. It was extremely clean and conveniently located. Staff were friendly and responsive. The room had two double beds. It was a tight fit for the four of us, but I felt the hotel made the most of the space available. There was a fair amount of street noise, but it is New York City after all.

• Verified traveler (8/5): Weekend stay Jan 4th - The hotel was satisfactory for the price. The walls are thin and the elevator is loud and can be heard from the rooms. A few items were left behind from previous guests like dirty socks in the closet. However, the staff were friendly and kind.

• Paul (2/5): - First night we went in for check-in. The room was a mess. They cleaned it up and the bed still smelled like Body Oder. I asked them for a discount. They said they would give me a discount, but they didn’t. They charge my Visa after I left they never gave me a receipt for my refund.
