- D9540QO_ (10/5): Good for business travellers - I like the hotel and stayed there not for one time. For business trip it is one of the best place to stay in Shanghai: close to the center, various breakfast choice, tidy and clean rooms.
- MINDA (10/5): - Location of the hotel was it's #1 asset. I love it!
- Chi (8/5): - The size of the room was sufficient, and the bed was nice and firm, but some of the furniture felt worn. It was nice that bottled water was provided every day. Buffet breakfast was traditional Chinese for the most part, but there were several western options as well. Staff was very helpful and assisted with several issues we had. Location is within walking distance to the amazing riverside where there is a dazzling display of lights, as well as Nanjing Road, which is a fantastic and classy pedestrian street. However, a little disappointed that the room with river view does not overlook the side of the Huangpu River, where the skyscrapers are located, but instead, has a view of a river perpendicular to the Huangpu. But otherwise, the hotel is well located and very much recommended.

- Kieran (8/5): Worst bed ever! (But nice hotel location) - Hotel is in a nearly 100 year old building. Lobby felt upscale and nice, service and staff were great. There was a musty smell in hallways and room (all carpeted and “smells” like it may be the original from 1939) but somewhat understandable due to age of building. Service elevator is unmarked and in regular guest areas on floors… we only knew when we were joined in the elevator by a staff member with a large and very stinky garbage can on our trip down to breakfast from a higher floor, and wound up lost in staff area/basement. The bed is by far the least comfortable I’ve ever experienced. Not exaggerating, I contemplated sleeping on the stinky carpeted floor. Have stayed at around 80-85 hotels internationally and this was by far the worst bed I have ever “slept in”. Unacceptable for any hotel in my opinion. The good: excellent and updated lobby, nice cafe and restaurant on ground level, and frankly the location cannot be beat. Hair dryer in the room was very nice and effective. My wife was impressed with it. Would stay again if they updated the beds. Under no circumstance would I ever willingly lie on that mattress again though. Brutal.

- Lianqun (10/5): - It's nice location and views. Historic and cultural. Walkable to north Bund. Most staff are very nice. This our third times stay in this hotel. But would be back again. First day checking the room has some smoking smell. 2nd day front desk gave us changed room. It's great.

- pete_malaysia (8/5): Old but decent value-for-money - 2nd time in china,chose this hotel based on the great location,which is about 1km from the bund. Took the Maglev from Pudong airport to the city.then decided to take a metered taxi from the station.was supposed to be a 20-minute drive,driver took us on a 1 hour 'tour' of shanghai!! Use DIDI at all times! no translation issues and very reasonable rates.Booked a DIDI back to airport at 5am,had one in a minute! Anyway,there was confusion at check-in with regards to breakfast.Seems Agoda used a 3rd party to book and breakfast wasnt included.After few calls and emails,Agoda refunded me partially via Agoda cash.We did try the buffet breakfast our first morning here......all I can say is.......eat elswhere.....lets just say that all that 'hawking' you hear about.....is legit.... Room was of decent size and had partial view of the bund,which was great.Bed was comfy but air-conditioner was stuck at 25 celcius! wouldnt go cooler as it was programmed to go no lower.Staff were not proficient in English.Not being part of an international chain did have its drawbacks.CNY 500 deposit was required at check-in. Housekeeping was great and friendly Contrary to what people tell you,one does need CASH in china.nearest ATM was a km away at the Bank of China on the bund.Googlemaps was outdated! The main draw of this hotel was its proximity to the bund.....although it's facade does remind me of a Batman movie !

Breakfast was excellent with huge choice of western and local dishes and lots of staff to clear and refill quickly. The staff on reception and the concierges were polite, professional and helpful with enough English to understand us and vice versa. The lobby was lovely art deco . I highly recommend this hotel

Wonderful North Bund location, big rooms, overall beautiful art deco throughout, exceptional team working here, and a stupendous buffet breakfast. For what you get, it is super value for money. I would not hesitate to stay again .

It is an older remodeled hotel that has everything a super hotel would offer. The breakfast is the very best I have ever had, anywhere. The breakfast is as good or better than the Peace hotel. The hotel is conveniently located, a short walk across the Waibaidu bridge and you are on the Bund. A short walk (2 blocks) on the Bund and you are across the street from Nanjing Road. Take the subway to the Pudong area, Yu Gardens, and countless shopping. The hotel is clean and comfortable. If you want a treat book the executive room, but you really do not need to. Like shows? The ERA is the best. It is a circus type show. Stroll the French Quarter or Concession Zone, or if you are into it, visit the Jade Buddha Temple. I recommend the Pearl TV Tower, it is the first tall building in Shanghai and offers the best view. If you go up the Jinmao Tower it is so tall you cannot make out anything.

- Jing (6/5): - This is a historic building with an excellent location and view. But the facility is outdated. The AC system is weak particularly in the hot summer days. After being in a room with a temperature of 79 degrees for a few hours, I contacted the front desk. A building maintenance guy and a manager came. Without any inspections, they told me that it was the way in the hot summer then left. I could not imagine that I had to stay in that room for one wk so I requested a room change. Finally, I was placed in a different room with a better cooling AC. The cleaning lady Ms. Peng is very pleasant and warm. She would be the only reason that I will come back to the hotel.

River view is great if room is in the mid or right section of the building facing towards the city night lights. Staff understand some English. Walk to the Yuyang old street and Yu garden is about 20mins.

I was probably the only other Westerner/non-Chinese, but most staff could speak some English. It was indeed clean and the room was pretty spacious.
- V8990UZstevenk (2/5): Stay Clear of this Hotel - The Broadway Mansions is not as it appears. Outwardly it looks high class and very nice; however behind the scenes it has several issues. The common areas are are well presented; however the bedrooms are a dissapointment. They are old fashioned, poorly lit with major electrical issues. Behind units plugs were hanging off walls exposing bare wires, the electrics tripped at least 2 or 3 times a day, and there were iron burn marks on the carpets of both the rooms we had. Despite advertsing amazing views we had none, looking into parking areas or high walls, and the Shanghai blog sites stated that they had NYE celebrations for western guests.This was not true, and there was a distinct lack of said western guests, even in the British Pub onsite; which was only british in name. The hotel is in an excellent location which is its only redeeming point.

I had mentioned that I had an early morning flight leaving Thursday morning and they had organized a cab in advance to drop me off at the airport. I also mentioned that there was a mosquito in my room and they even set up mosquito repellent for me. The service was superb and I would recommend this place for anyone looking to stay in Shanghai.
- Richarda9094 (6/5): Goodl location, poor service - Broadway Mansions is an historic property, dating from 1934. Check-in was relatively smooth, as the receptionist was able to speak basic English. Arrival was during the last weekend of China’s week long national holiday. The large room that overlooked the front of the hotel contained twin beds. The carpet was damaged with that appeared to be cigarette burns and the upholstery of the chair was unacceptably stained. The hotel is floodlit at night and it was unfortunate that the curtains did not meet properly in the centre. The beds were uncomfortably hard. We attempted to eat at the hotel’s Belle Vue buffet restaurant, only to be told that there would be a two hour wait for a table. The only available dining option at the hotel was the Ichibanya Japanese restaurant. The food was reasonably good and was of a high presentation standard. The staff’s command of English was minimal. Room service was ridiculously slow. It took four attempts to order a sandwich. The first three attempts resulted in my being cut off. It then took one hour and 15 minutes for the sandwich to be delivered to the room and immediate cash payment was demanded.

I stayed in room 816, which was fine for one person, as it had a circular bed that might not be comfortable for two people. The breakfast buffet was extensive and delicious, but a bit pricey.
- 877inns (2/5): Horrible hotel. I had to cancel on arrival and good another - When you arrive it seems nice then they send us to the room and the room was not even ready. They asked to wait at leat 30min or more to be cleaned so we asked another room because we just had 10 hours trip. The other room was horrible, smelly and ugly. We asked to cancel and they said ok and they will refund in 1 month and not giving any proof. I called booking at the moment and booking called the manager and it was solved. So don t leave before calling booking to make sure you get the refund
- bijou2006 (6/5): Average - Hotel staff was unable to describe the name of its own hotel in English. Stayed on executive floor but shower water pressure was very low and not enough hot water. Bathtub was okay. Breakfast was wonderful with Chinese, Western and Japanese selections. Omelette was prepared upon request and was fairly good. Had problems connecting with hotel's wi-fi but staff was quick to come to the room and fix it.

- christianw456 (8/5): The Landmark - The venue is located near the world-famous Bund. The hotel was built in 1934 and is one of the landmarks of the city. The rooms are of different sizes and I had the smallest one with on little window only, a little dark in there, and a funny round bed which would be very tiny for two persons. The breakfast is good with a fabulous view on the Bund.
- antonello_supino (8/5): Good value for money - I chose this hotel mainly as it was the only reasonably priced 5 star hotel in the area. Location is great, staff was helpful although English level is not high. When I arrived I was very disappointed as there was no king bed and I was going to be given a twin room, however I was upgraded to a room much larger with windows on three sides and bed. Were large enough. Once entered the room there was a strange smell, initially I thought it was some mould or other but I found out it was a mosquito repellent burner attached to an electric power plug. Actually once I switched that off all was quite clean and good smell. The hotel is historical, some renovation may be needed but I found it in a good enough condition to recommend it.

Our room has a small balcony where you can walk out to and you get a fantastic view of the river and both Pudong and PuXi. They serve Huiyang food and it is presented in a more artistic style sorf of like nouveau french food. Service is OK but overall a great experience and incredible view.

HOWEVER, the bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable. The fitness center is sparse and needs to be updated. The breakfast is just..OK. Bring your own bottled water because there is no water. It is an OK hotel overall but if you are tired from traveling, the bed will disappoint. The proximity to the lovely Bund is this hotel's saving grace. The view at night is amazing.

Bed was a hard slab and I had a more comfortable night’s sleep on the overnight sleeper train from Beijing. The carpet was disgusting and there were several loose floor tiles in the shower. Honestly I have stayed in better budget motels around the world. I’m sure this place was great in the 50’s but do not stay here.
- David (8/5): Great Location - The hotel is exceptionally located in Shanghai. It is close to everything i.e. i.e. Bund, yet the neighbourhood is quiet. It is safe to walk around at night. Transportation-wise it is easy to get to and from. And you can't beat if for the price.
- Verified traveler (8/5): It's the small things that make a difference - Firstly I would say this is a nice hotel and in a great location. I would give the hotel a much better rating but for the niggling small things. I was not too upset by the water leak in my bathroom (which was solved rapidly) but expected better advice from the concierge when I asked about a trip outside the city. He really should be able to help visitors and know about buses/trains. The thing than annoyed me most was that I paid for the executive floor believing that you got some benefit. When I asked if they could print my airplane tickets they said that it would cost me 10 yuan per page which seems extortionate. When I complained the staff said that if I wanted to save money I might be able to find a shop in town that would print the tickets more cheaply! Surely printing a page of text costs almost nothing and should be part of the executive package? Anyway, I would not advise booking the executive rooms as the breakfast offered in the executive lounge is worse than the standard breakfast in the restaurant and the free afternoon tea consists of a few tired looking snacks, rather disappointing, I was expecting more.

- Vince (10/5): Best night view for Shanghai harbour. - Although the hotel is not nearby subway station but we can conveniently catch the Taxi. It has a great view in Shanghai located in front of the ancient heritage bridge. We can also see the night view of the whole harbour from the bridge.
- stuart (2/5): very disappointed - I booked a twin room for my daughters who were with me on this trip, I have stayed here before and find the location very handy. The hotel gave them a double and the very rude guy at reception insisted that a booking for a twin room was a booking for a double and the hotel had no obligation to give a twin room. The room I had was dirty, the carpet was stained in multiple places and the corridor and room smelled of smoke, daughters room on the floor above was the same. Also found locals being dealt with at reception before non locals which was very disturbing, felt like discrimination . I would not recommend this hotel and would not stay here again

Our original room was very small, with a round bed, and not very nice. We switched to an upgraded room and it was much nicer. They also have free food in the executive lounge.

I had already paid for the hotel Room upgrade, where cash was exchanged, but on the day of checking out, they claimed I never paid. They then had someone showing me video evidence of me not paying and quite conveniently 20 seconds had gone missing. So ended up paying for the upgrade twice Not happy with hotel. However the Hotel is very nice, great room and facilities. The view of the river and part of the Skyline was amazing

- charles (10/5): One of the best standard hotels in Shanghai - I have stayed at the Broadway Mansions several times over the pas few years and it is hard to beat. It is not a luxury hotel but it has so much to offer for the price. The breakfast is better than most and the location is superb. You can walk to just about anyplace around the Bund (Yu Gardens, Nanjing Rd E, The Bund, Restaurants) and the night views of the Bund and the Huangpu River are terrific. The price is reasonable.

It is clean and comfortable, the staff at check-in speak very good English, and it is right across the bridge from The Bund. Some of the rooms have lovely views of The Bund and the river, which is especially lovely after dark. The Bund is safe to stroll through in the evenings, and it is also very interesting to people-watch there. There are also several restaurants in the immediate area, so you don't have to eat at the hotel, which is very expensive.
- Lan NH (4/5): The hotel really needs renovations to be five-star. - Location is great as other reviewers said. However the hotel is not five-star, but 3-star, I would say. And there are many hotels in the area with similar great location, as well as good price in Shanghai. First the room is not clean. I had to ask to change the room due to the dirty toilet and it is the first time for me to do this in my hotel stays. The new has clean toilet, but smaller and with similar dirty carpet as the first room ( even worse than the first room), and it is a smoking room. We did not ask to move to another room because we were tired and hungry just want to settle down as soon, and did not want more hassles. Then I have to say the service is not five-star. If the hotel room does not meet the basic criteria of cleanliness, guests should not be downgraded to a smaller room. We booked and paid for a room with king size bed and non smoking room the new room only has queen size bed and is smoking room. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend the hotel to others,as it is not the only hotel in that area.

- Kylie (8/5): Great location and charming old hotel with history - We did have some concerns staying here and there are a number of posts regarding dirty and stained carpets and chairs, so our expectation was a little low. As a result, yes the carpet was a bit tired, it wasnt as bad as we expected so it wasnt an issue for us. The lobby and staff have a very old world charm, which is lovely, we were on a low level room (3), but had we been higher the view from an above level room would have been wonderful. English is pretty good at Reception, but not all can speak good english, but always willing to try and help. The location is very handy to the Bund, you take a short wander over the Waibaidu Bridge (first all-steel bridge in China) and you are at the Bund. We found the hotel and area quiet despite the proximity to the Bund. The beds are a little hard, but this is typical for China, and so not that bad. Would happily stay here again.

- Charlie (6/5): Disappointing stay for a so-called 5-star hotel - Broadway Mansions is located well and is in a pleasant part of Shanghai. Our executive room had an outstanding view of the Bund and the Financial District. Unparalleled to none so far that we have stayed in, in Shanghai. That's probably about all the positives we can give. THe general service in the hotel was very poor- starting from front desk to the executive lounge. The executive lounge needs a total rehaul. The breakfast restaurant was not clean with very sticky floors. The staff had dirty uniforms and looked quite shabby and generally quite disrespectful to guests. My commendations go to the very active and helpful bellhops that were attentive at every sign of our pitching up at the entrance of the hotel. Our executive room was of a good size but the services were nearly not as good as 4-star executive rooms in other hotels. I agree with what others say that this hotel does not deserve the star status it has. At best it would be a three star in my view. Had we not booked a non-refundable rate, I would have not hesitated to change my booking in good time!

Then had to wait 15 minutes more outside in the hall when I got up to the room for maid-service to finish preparing the room. The first credit card (Mastercard) I tried they were not able to take. Despite these things, a pretty good place to stay, if you don't mind the smell of stale cigar/cigarette smoke.

- John (10/5): Classic Shanghai - Just got back from China and this place is great. My second time staying there. It is not a modern, western hotel and that's part of its charm. The rooms are wonderful. Very clean, large, with modern amenities. Breakfast is excellent with great views. And the "British Bar" is a great place for a drink - outstanding service and friendly servers. Location is outstanding. Great value - this place is priced wonderfully.
