Guest Reviews
- george (2/5): Bad experience - Could have had seperate rooms but it was out of town chickens running around they had a musty smell.we had to share a bath room they never describe the rooms before we arrived!
- shelley (4/5): Not what we expected - Huge hassle, confusion, and expense to get to hotel from airport. No one from hotel available to greet us upon arrival. Person who checked us in was quite unfriendly...don't think she smiled once. Turned out to be a Bizarre stay...was it a farm, hotel, B&B, or residence? Mimo (the chef) was extremely wonderful, helpful, and kind...he was the only good thing about the stay. Got eaten alive by mosquitos. Just happy it was for one night. Should have slept at the airport, honestly.
- Verified traveler (2/5): do not stay at this hotel - This place is a scam
When I called the hotel they told me that they did not have my reservation and that I will not be able to stay also I was not able to find the hotel
I called hotel.com and they called and they al of a sudden found my reservation after that they started calling me non stop to go to the hotel but I was at a different hotel already hotel.com did give me a full refund for this.
- Jan (2/5): - Not good. Would not recommend even for the money.
- Henry (4/5): Terrible Location - Hotel very hard to find, very dark after 8:00pm, I wasn't stayed in this hotel and wondered if they still charge to my account
- Cynthia (4/5): Not near the airport - We ended up not staying here for the final night of our Italy trip because we were quoted 60 euro cab fare from theairport to the hotel and none of the taxi drivers knew where it was. So we canceled and walked to the Hilton.
- Collette (2/5): terrible in a very remote location - nothing like the picture on the email the taxi driver had no idea where to go neither did any of the others cab drivers, it cost more to go to and from the venue than the cost of the hotel if you can call it that , it was not well sign posted , and down a beaten track , I would never recommend this venue to any one
- GP (8/5): Quiet, Country Retreat - I was surprised to find a country retreat type location so close to Rome airporto stayed the night prior to flying out. Dinner was prepared by the farmhouse resident a trained chef who whipped up a dish from farm fresh ingredients. the settings are rustic with upgraded amenities. Wifi is limited to close proximity to the office. Overall, would stay again, a nice quiet get away
- Alan (6/5): Perfect for the airport - Not what you expect when you arrive - it's an agriturismo which I don't remember seeing in the advert and not what you expect inside - nice and very clean. No shower curtain is a pain but we stayed two nights in the two room apartment which was very comfortable.
Breakfast is just ok. A bit disappointed we had to pay 10 euros a night for our little yorkie for the extra cleaning which took about 5 minutes on the first morning. If you are in to pets there are some very friendly cats, dogs, horses, rabbits and a goat.
40 minutes into Rome with one change for the Metro arriving at the Coliseum.
Brilliant for the airport only 15 minutes away and would recommend it.
- Mike (10/5): Beautiful country setting, very peaceful and quiet - We loved this place. Within walking distance to the castle and ancient ruins, and restaurants.
The host was very accomodating, and since we were leaving very early in the morning, she gave us a care package for the breakfast we were going to miss. The only concern was she spoke no English, so we had a little trouble communicating, and the price of dinner I think was 30 euros per person which was out of our price range.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - WE stayed for 1 night before flying out to our destination. Very close to the airport. Dinner was great.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly, family feel:) - Well I actually booked this place because I thought it was really close to the airport and we could save on transportation, but we actually had to spend more to get a taxi there.
However, this place was so cute! Very friendly staff and an amazing dinner prepared for us by them!
Since we had to leave very early in the morning they gave us a breakfast basket:)
I would recommend that anyone who stays here have a car to get around.
I is probably a great place for families that want to have space and let the kids run around.
- SJ (8/5): Charming cottage/hotel in the woods - This place is in the middle of the woods and was not captured by my GPS navigator, which led me to a wrong location.Thankfully, a friendly pizza delivery guy allowed me to follow him in his car to the correct location. We drove through an unpaved road through the woods before reaching the hotel. The office to the reception desk was closed, so we were greeted by the chef and he gave me the keys to my room. The rooms were beautiful. The bathroom was spotless with a lovely large bathtub and all essential amenities. The nights were very comfortable, tranquil and quiet until the rooster wakes you up at six am! Outside of the hotel are various farm animals including a pig, several horses, cats, and a very friendly dog. My 4-year old son and I loved this place so much that we wanted to stay there a few days longer. The backyard also includes a play structure with a swing and see-saw which is perfect for toddlers. The best experience at the hotel were the dinners provided by chef. I have been to the best restaurants in California, and this chef definitely ranks with the best. The cons: Driving through this town is a horrible experience. I recommend leaving the car at the hotel, walking a mile to the train station, and taking the metro train to Rome. Unfortunately, the hotel is in the middle of the woods, so exiting into the streets is about a mile walk.
Overall, if you love nature and the comfort of a great hotel in the middle of the woods, this is a great place!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Far from Rome city, VERY close to old Rome ruins - While we were a little worried driving up (dirt, pothole filled road, older buildings) the inside was clean and filled with antiques! Very well maintained inside, rooms very conveniently laid out. We stayed in the 3 bed, which was actually split into 2 rooms with a private bath.
- Evans Family (10/5): A great & interesting find for family of 6 - We are a family of 6 from Australia and were just finishing a month-long holiday in Italy and the UK. We had an overnight stop-off in Rome en route from London. We had already seen the sites of Rome early in the holiday and wanted somewhere to stay reasonably close to the airport (FCO) that could take us all. We can sleep all in one room but prefer to have separate.
The approach to the hotel is down a potholed road past fields (with poppies and horses). The buildings looked very quiet as we approached and we initially wondered if we were at the right place.
We were quickly welcomed however and were really pleased we chose this. The buildiings are very rural on the outside but our "suite" was enormous with 2 double bedrooms (one with the requested cot) and two more singles downstairs. Beds were very comfortable and the bath/shower good.
We had a fabulous full evening meal with all the couses (antipasti with the best mozzarella all trip) and wine in pottery mugs.
Breakfast was pastries, sandwiches, cereals, juice and coffee with very attentive service.
It felt very rustic and very far from the sameness of big hotel chains (it wouldn't be a natural choice for business trips though).
We would have loved to stay longer to explore the grounds and nearby archeological sites of Ostia Antica but needed to catch our plane.
A good find and we felt we'd managed to have another taste of Italy before we left
- Rock (8/5): decent place but its on country side - Stay was good and reception and staff is very nice. They helped me alot even if we had difficulty in communicating in English. But just a caution its not actually a hotel its like a country side resort/stay. So dont be surprised if you dont find some service you are expecting from Hotel in City side. The room I got was lavish and more like 4 star stay. It was very clean and had all the amenities i needed. But there was no wi fi connectivity.
- Z (6/5): Overnight stay close to the airport - We were looking for a place to stay outside of Rome and close to the airport, so that we would not be caught in traffic for our late morning flight. The room is inside to old city which feels very medieval. It is a very nice experience. We got there late in the afternoon, and I would recommend to arrive earlier and to go out to explore the site and the Roman ruins nearby. The room interior is very special and is not a luxury room by any means. There are mosquitoes in the area and the nets are a bit torn, so be prepared. The landlady and the breakfast are in another location, and you need a car or 10-15 mins walk to go there.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Rome - Very exotic place, nice to be there for a couple of nights to feel authentic spirit. Not enough comfortable to live more than 3 days but great location. Bathroom and beds are very clean and comfortable, from outside looks like an old village house, close to airport and train station.
- Francesca& Igor (8/5): Handy for the airport & Ostia antiquities - The room was on its own in the castle area - very quaint and charming. We wanted to be by the airport because we were leaving the next day - the downside was that planes flew overhead every 3 minutes! Luckily, they stopped during the night. The place had character and the small town and nearby antiquites were worth seeing - and we wouldn't have seen them if we hadn't stayed at this hotel. All in all - I'd go back - its convenient when arriving/leaving Fuilminico airport but I would not choose it as a base for visiting Rome.
- SOS (8/5): Amazingly good experience - Getting there and finding the place was a little difficult and we were not sure how the stay would work out. It was one our best stays. The rooms were clean and located in this amazing old castle grounds. There was a wonderful neighborhood grocer where we bought 1eu a bottle good wine! We ate at the mom and pop restaurant in the alley- the food was superb. It would have been nice if the rooms were better lit and the bathroom a little newer. On the whole the place was charming and Moana the lady at the reception was very helpful. The breakfast room is not very accessible.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful slice of real small-town Italy - This is a wonderful place, but it is very important that you know what to expect and you need to have a little pluck to make it work. This is NOT a traditional hotel, but a family inn with working farm, do not expect Marriot. There are several different buildings throughout Ostia, so there is not always someone at desk; plus very little English. One set of stone buildings is the "country" rooms at the farm, this is at the 18 Via Rainaldo address. The other buildings are in the medieval village in town next to the main castle. The office is at the farm so if you have rooms in the medieval village, go to the farm and someone will drive you to your rooms. We stayed at medieval village. Rooms are like mini-suites; all different. Ostia archeological site is 5-min walk around the corner, perfectly placed.
Do have dinner at La Cucina, the hotel's restaurant. Owner/son will pick you up at room and drive you. When we dined there we were only couple, they opened the restaurant just for us and cooked us the best 7-course meal I've ever had. Many ingredients grown on farm + cook was sophisticated gourmet who know's what he is doing. Fixed-price meal was 30 euros/person, including bottle of wine.
Family is very into personal travel experience rooted in local culture; they do lots of courses, breed rare local horses on farm, etc. Wonderful experience of REAL Italy. Do print out their webpage with map and cell # to show cab driver so they can find it!
- Buz (10/5): A must for Rome visitors - It was an incredible experience staying in a small house in the Borge - the old walled city, with its 15th Century castle, all a short walk from the Roman ruins. Advice: First, the Borge location is just inside the gate. It's associated with the restaurant (not always open) just outside the gate and with the Country location about a mile away. Phone ahead so someone will meet you at the old city gate. Second, the ancient ruins are vast. Allow at least four hours, more if possible. The time flies. Bottom line: the folks at Rodrigo de Vivar are wonderful, the Borge is magic and the ruins are incredible.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Romantic Rome - Located in a small town on the outskirts of Rome, this rustic retreat offers a feel for history and romance. Rooms are available in a rural setting or within the city walls. Although comfortable, the rooms are authentic to their history. Do not expect a full service hotel. However, you may expect personal attention.
The location is within walking distance of the archeological site of Ostia Antica and a short train ride to the center of Rome. Make sure that they are aware of your arrival time since there is not someone on duty 24 hours a day. Also in walking distance are good restaurants and taverns with warm hospitality and good food. This place is recommended only for the romantic!
- Verified traveler (8/5): People were really nice and funny - Really good experience also if it is far from downtown Rome.
- Verified traveler (2/5): DO NOT STAY HERE - This place is a dump. We would not have even stayed here except we arrive late and tired. At 3:00 AM we lost power& water and there was nobody to talk to. The office was closed and they did not ansewer the phone when we called. DO NOT SYAT HERE...
- Verified traveler (8/5): Rustic with a great restaurant and wonderful manager - We were worried about finding the Inn because having been traveling for a while in Europe you learn to not take anything for granted. The metro line that takes you there from Rome was out of order and our cab driver got us lost on a rained out dirt road. We showed up exhausted, starving and irritated. The hotel manager (jacopo) was so sweet and accommodating that we cheered up pretty quickly. We walked into town (about 10 minutes from the Inn) to eat but everything was closed. One kind woman saw us walking around looking hungry and opened up her restaurant to serve us some delicious antipasto and lasagne. That night we went to the restaurant at the Inn (Kuchina) and our manager also was our waiter! The food and service were fantastic and we complemented the chef and waiter many many times in our broken Italian. We would both go back.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Rodrigo de Vivar - The property is well maintained and the people very nice but it is NOT near the airport and while they will "arrange a shuttle" for you, you must pay 30 euros each way to the airport making the hotel cost an additional 60 E. Our room, in the village was nice but very noisy (right on a busy corner) and if you left the windows open, the cats would come in.
That said, if you want to see Roman Ruins showing how everyday people lived, this is extremely convenient to Ostica Antiqua.
- Gregory (4/5): Unfriendly, inaccessible, expensive Italians only - Located on a dirt road too far away from transportation or any other services, we were interrogated about our reservations and put in a suite underneath which a birthday party raged for four hours. Hotel is a mile from the nearest train and is surrounded by animal pens and cropland. Advertises itself upon arrival as agritourism. Only restaurant does not post prices until it is time to checkout and is very expensive. Our reservations were for two rooms and they claimed they were booked up. In the middle of the four hour party they offered to move us, so they did have other rooms. Very little English spoken, they are not used to non-Italian visitors. No air conditioning, too far from Rome to see any sights. Very disappointed. The internet advertisement is misleading and says nothing about agritourism and country approach. Van driver had never heard of it. Reccomend travelers stay in the city of Rome. At least with the noise you have restaurants and services.
- John (10/5): Rodrgio de Vivar - Lovely place to stay a night or several. Warm, friendly service, simple, honest food in a welcoming atmosphere. Do get there in good time in the evening to avoid the disappointment of finding the hotel looking closed (when it really isn't)
- betty (2/5): shabby and noisey - I had booked a room in the countryside. The one I received was in the village, shabby with old worn Louis the 14th gold painted chairs, a camp table in the middle of the room and a peeling huge mirror over a buffet table, a door lock with four dead bolts as you would find in a bank vault, a king size bed too large for the bedroom, a 2 ft tub area where you could slid about, mosquitos as their wasn't enough screens on the barred windows, a broken up sidewalk as the entry where you could park a car after going over the curb, and breakfast was served out at the ranch house which was over a half mile away. The noise came from the buses passing by and the chatter behind the room in a courtyard. Very difficult to sleep. Other folks must have had a different room then I did, but I would NEVER RECOMMEND THIS RIP OFF TO ANYONE.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Location without service - Great location -- no service. We were dropped off by taxi at the address given and found out (via a note taped to their door) that we had to walk a half-mile on a dirt road with our bags to check in. Once checked in -- we were driven back to the original location. Our clerk agreed to get a taxi for us the next morning (we confirmed several times) The taxi never came. We had to engage the help of some local people -- and barely made our flight. It was a frustrating end to our trip.
If you don't care about service -- the location is great -- a midevil village -- very charming.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Rodrigo de Vivar - very remote, inconvenient, services not as stated.
No: A/C, TV, Shower, Microwave, Ice, ....
If you are not able to walk and do not rent a car this is not the location for you.
- Nacho (6/5): Rome - Too far from the restaurant where breakfast is served. good location from airport, only 15 min away.
- Verified traveler (6/5): True countryside - The hotel and its countryside building are 800 meters apart. If you are staying there for the sake of being close to the airport and saving some money on the commute, don't bother, taxi charge is about the same to/from Rome and to/from this hotel, although distances are vastly different.
The place is located inside the ancient/ archeological/ historical town. The ancient village is very small but very cute and offers two nice local restaurants. We had to kill half a day near Rome and it was a perfect spot.
It is a true countryside because it is located among chicken farms and other fields and smells like it, but in a very nice, authentic way.
I think they have lots of different types of rooms. Ours was in a countryside and upgraded, so we had two floors. It is an actual apartment set up with two additional small beds downstairs and a kitchen.
It is a lovely place. My husband thought it was "funky."
And we ate better food than in Rome.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Rodrigo de Vivar--close to airport - This is advertised as being close to the airport. While it actually only is a few miles, the only transportation we could get was a taxi and for less than 5 miles, that cost us $50. Upon arriving, there was no clear indication exactly where the hotel was located. It was not clearly marked. We had to search until we found the entrance. Then that was locked and there was a small sign indicating they were in the country and would be back shortly. We waited 1 hour and someone still did not arrive. We needed to make an international phone call to the hotel and then someone came. Apparently they have 2 locations; a "city" one and a "country" one. We were assigned to the country one yet we did not have a car. We had to walk over 1 mile the next morning to a bus stop in order to be able to get transportation back to the airport. The hotel in the country had a sense of quaintness and intrigue about it, but we felt isolated from being able to get something to eat or transportation anywhere. They do provide meals throughout the day, but that was a significant additional cost.
It ended up fine and a good story, but the hotel needs to be much more clearly marked and staff continuously at both locations. If we would have needed anything, there was no one around. If we had arrived even 30 minutes later to the hotel it would have been closed for the night and we would have been completely stuck, even though this was NOT at all advertised on the website or through hotels.com.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Charming and close to the airport - This hotel is in a 1200 year old piazza. Wonderful history surrounds you. The people do not speak much english but are very willing to try. The village is charming. Across the street the merchant wanted us to try all of his wines. Such a pleasant rest after the fast pace of Rome.
- Smedley (8/5): Extra effort - We had a good experience. They gave us an upgraded room. The Delphine apt was very nice. Being there in the winter however, it was a little cold. The staff went waaay out of their way to get a space heater for us, and that was much appreciated.
A couple of hints: it is NOT a U.S. or even a European city experience. It's charming and you couldn't be closer to the ruins (which are fabulous) but don't expect a Sheraton.
Second, call ahead to make sure someone is there when you are planning to arrive. There are two offices, one in town and one in the country and I don't think they realize that someone arriving may not know that there are two offices, or which one to go to, and if you sit around waiting for them to just arrive (like the sign suggests) you may be waiting a long while. If you arrive in town and the office is closed, just call the second number on the sign right away.
- Ginger (2/5): Don't stay at this hotel - When we were shown our room, my husband and I noticed that it looked lived in.Food in the refrigerator and an unlocked adjoining door so I asked the man who had carried our luggage for a key. He said "You can't lock the door, I need to use the kitchen."It was his apartment and evidently we were expected to sublet from him.I explained to him that this was not going to happen. That I had a confirmed reservation for a private hotel room. The manager at first insisted they were full but then finally found a room. The next day a different person was in the office and we told her what happened. She was suprised because she sd they had several vacant rooms.Bed was so hard that the floor probably would have slept better. It was very cold and there was not heat. Ran out of hot water every time I showered. The light was out in the bathroom and was never repaired. We were miserable. This was the beginning of a cruise trip and I had also booked a night at this hotel after the cruise before our flight home.I cancelled it and rebooked at a different hotel.
- Verified traveler (2/5): No one keeping the store. - There is no one on duty. Family members come and go. There is no phone in the room in case of an emergency. Even if there were, there is no one in the office. The room is primitive...peeling paint on some walls and ceilings. TV mostly has a fee and is difficult to manage. No tables in the living room. I would never recommend this place.
- jacques (8/5): A nice surprise near the airport and Ostia Antica. - A few steps from Ostia Antica; rather a nice country place; renaissance village 500 meters; hostess charming; very good restaurant a few steps. 30 euros from the airport; taxi driver did not know where to find the place, but finally ok.
- Ray (4/5): Hotel Rodrigo de Vivar - I was not pleased with this accommodation. It in my opinion is not a four star facility but perhaps a two star. One bathroom being shared by three rooms is not my idea of a good place to be. There is not a shuttle service to and from the airport as stated on the website and requires 60 Euros for a round trip by taxi. There is a one kilometer ride to get breakfast in the morning whereby the facility will shuttle you to breakfast at either eight or nine o'clock. We spent one month in Italy and this place was one of lesser quality places we stayed and the price was not cheap at this facility.
- Joseph (8/5): Good escape from the everyday - I didn't know exactly what to expect when booking this hotel because of the varied reviews. I was under the impression that I was getting a small cabin in the woods or something very private as I opted for the country rooms. The description made it seem like I would be staying at a cottage or something old and romantic
What is actually there is a rectangular building that's been turned into a duplex. You enter through a main door, have a center room with tv and couch, and each room has their own door to the left and the right.
The actual room was very spacious and was clean. There is no ac and the windows stay open for ventilation so there is a bit of a musty smell I guess, but not like you're in a cellar or anything. Some of the other reviews were a bit too critical on that. It's an old house so the smells are on par with that. The only real gripe I would make is that the bed should be upgraded. It's seen its fare share of use and is a bit springy feeling. Oh, and there wasn't a stand up shower, just a tub with a handheld showerhead so anticipate that. I also had to throw a towel over the bathroom window as it just had a doily over it and you could clearly see inside from the parking area.
Ok, as for finding it...as the other reviews say, none of the taxi drivers know about it for some reason and the taxi drivers in Italy will take any fare as long as they think they can find it so bring a map. If you don't have a map, just remember to tell them that it's across the street from Ostia Antica. They should all know where that is. Oh, and yes, expect to pay between 30 and 40 euro for a trip to or from the airport. I asked for a taxi to the airport and they arranged one to pick me and my wife up.
The surrounding neighborhood is a bit rundown. There is graffiti everywhere but it seems to be the case everywhere around Rome. The country rooms are at least a ways from the town so I doubt if it really was a shady area that anybody would bother going down there.
I was suppose to rent a car but after seeing the insurance fees I opted out. I thought I was going to be stuck in the hotel but it turns out there is a metro station just a few blocks away. This was an great plus for the location. It was about a 15 minute walk from our country room down the dirt road and then across the town.
The hotel staff is not really brushed up on their english but they at least make an effort. There was one girl there that spoke well but she wasn't there all the time.
If you stay here, expect it to be a getaway from all things modern. Do not go expecting internet, phone, TV, or other modern niceties. If you go expecting some country resort, then you will be disappointed. If you go expecting a old worldy experience that's next to an ancient city and is reasonably priced, then you'll be pleased.
- Barbara (10/5): Can't wait to return.... - We did not stay in the main part of this lovely old hotel, but rather a room in the Country-Side ( by choice.) We were "escorted" there by a gentleman from the hotel, but prior to our going - we were provided with a basket of breakfast items that we could take to our room. So nice since were were leaving early in the morning prior to breakfast. The old farm house and accomodations were Wonderful,. The room was much larger than I expected, comfortable and clean. Horses, chickens, gardening on the grounds. A short walk to a restaurant where we had the BEST meal in all of Italy!! The Chef was the host, waiter, and of course cook.....What a Wonderful first nite in Italy!!! I would go back in a heartbeat and recommend it highly.
- Pam (10/5): Hidden Jewel right near Rome's Fiumicino Airport - This was a great stay for us! We chose it because of the close proximity to the airport for our last night in Italy. That aspect was great...in 10 minutes, we were at the airport. But...we didn't expect such cozy and charming accomodations!! We were staying with friends, so booked 2 countryside rooms (the main hotel was full). I am so glad we did! We had two adjoining rooms (suites really) that shared a living room with a fireplace. It was nice and cool at night when we were there(early October), but the cottages DO NOT have air conditioning, which may not be so great in July or August. (There was a fan in the room). They were like cozy cottages...wish we had more time there. Each side had its own separate bedroom and bathroom. The bathrooms were super-modern and clean. There was even a little refrigerator in each room, stocked with beverages (available for a fee). Beds were comfy, although a little hard. Breakfast was very good: pastries, cappucino, fresh fruit...not a whole lot, but it was good.
Some cautions: DO NOT try to find this hotel in the dark...it is very hard to find, even in the day. The countryside rooms are best for those with a car, as they are literally down a country road and away from any restaurants etc. Also note...chickens and roosters next door! Great if you want to get up early, probably not so great if you don't. It is RIGHT NEXT TO the CASTLE Gulio...and many ruins. We had planned to see them but arrived too late...looked very neat and worth spending half a day there.
Everyone in the office that we encountered were SUPER nice!! Francesca, who was there to greet us, spoke perfect English. She was very helpful and even printed out mapquest directions for us to get to the airport! This was a great value, and a wonderful way to end our Italian vacation!
- Lindy (8/5): Quaint - Near Rome airport and Ostica Antica ruins, this is why it was chosen. Walk to the ruins, free if you are over 65. The hotel is 600 years old and quaint really describes it. Paid for a large room, very quiet, 4 poster bed, TV only in Italian. No hot water because it was turned off, fixed quickly (30 minutes). Nice town to walk around in. Good for early flight out of FCO. Must call taxi, none available in town. Lots of places to eat, bank nearby. Hotel is on the castle grounds, very picturesque.
- William (10/5): wonderful hotel in Rome - This hotel is really nice and in an interesting area. i would recomend this hotel for someones last night or two in Rome since it is near the airport. the hotel restaurant is out standing also.
- Darla-Jean (10/5): I stayed next to a castle! - I arrived very late but got excellent treatment, then stayed in a lovely "apartment" next to the on-grounds castle. It was a dream!
- Aileen (8/5): Can't wait to go back. - Hotel Rogrigo de Vivar is an ideal location, next to the Ostia antica Roman ruins and train station to Rome and the Beaches (beautiful beach three train stops away). The town accommodation is in a beautiful old court with antique furnishings. The farm suites, which are also furnished in antiques, are located a five minute drive from the main hotel. These accommodations are not for everyone as they are rustic elegance, and situated in the middle of a working farm.
- Orlando (4/5): Not a four star hotel - Definitely not a four star hotel, maybe a 1 or 2 star. Rooms were dirty, no hair dryer, no air conditioning, fly flying around the dessert table. The only plusses about the hotel were that, the train station was within walking distance and the Rome Fiumicino airport 15 min. away.
- Heather (10/5): A wonderful stay! - I went to this hotel worrying because of all of the bad reviews it had gotten before, but it seems that the staff has read the reviews and taken the time to address the problems. First, we were just stunned by how beautiful the hotel was and the location. Very picturesque. It was close to the airport and easy to find (look for the castle turet across from Ostria ruins). When we checked in, the conceriege upgraded our room to a small apartment in the village with windows facing the medival village. We had a small kitchen and the bedroom was on the second floor. A fan was in the room, which served to cool it down and also drown out any noise. The hot water worked in the morning after the switch was turned on the night before to heat it. It was clean, just the chair coverings were stained and a little tired. The room smelled smoky - not from cigarettes, but because it was built in the 1100's and from years of fires. Parking was free and easy. The ride to the airport in the morning was easy too. It took 10 minutes in rush hour. All in all, it was a GREAT stay. Chocolate mints, toiletries (which we did not see a lot of in Italy), and a picturesque village made for a lovely stay. OH - and there is a FABULOUS restaurant within the ramparts. The food was inexpensive, the hostess was so sweet, and the surroundings were pretty. Would definitely recommend and stay again!
- John & Debbie (8/5): In the country, close to airport, easy access to Rome - We enjoyed staying in a character 2-room appartment.
Hotel staff were helpful enough and complimentary breakfast adequate.
After we found Rodrigo de Vivar (Ostia Antica is well tucked away and not very well sign-posted), check-in was brief; allowing us to head out exploring.
Train station is 5 minutes walk away, cheap all day travel tickets available to make easy sightseeing in Rome.
Close-by to the hotel are a few restaurants and bars and a deli where the staff were willing to help with our late night request for a burger!! An excellent looking pizzeria is nearby - didn't have a chance to taste the menu though!!
The ruins of Ostia Antica are a stroll away and to me were just as much fun as the monuments of Rome - I just wish I had been able to spend longer there.
For our short break (with early returning flight) we needed to be close to the airport ,and this hotel is so, so, so, much more enjoyable than a faceless airport hotel!
Secure car parking compound just across the road.
- Paul (10/5): A wonderful find and real added value to a trip to Italy - Whilst looking for a hotel near the airport to allow a quick look at Rome wasnt expecting much but loved this place. The hotel is actually a small country resort comprising rooms in a castle extension then suites spread in various old rooms around the estate. My guess is the rooms are all quite different. We were in the "country" and had a full suite of 4 bedrooms 2 bathrooms and a living room for the price of 2 rooms, absolutely great for our family of 5.
Positives are- service, location, (lovely immediately surrounding area and also close to the metro -200 yards and cheap 40 min trip to Rome centre, despite other reviews 15 mins to airport), original and interesting buildings and furnishings.
Negatives - best for car hirers, as country rooms 15 min walk from breakfast and also no routine transfer to airport, no aircon (but ample fans). Difficult to find actual hotel reception in the dark (find the castle and you are there, then look for the door next to the opening to the courtyard)
What was booked as a simple way of seeing Rome at the end of main vacation became a highlight of the holiday. Something interesting and different, none of the "ease" of the big chains but great way to see Rome and get an early flight the next day.
- Sue (8/5): Nice historic hotel - I stayed at the country side of the hotel. I was traveling alone and this room is basically a cabin in the middle of the country side. I explained to the owner that this wasn't the room I expected and he was very polite in finding me another lodging to stay in. The room and bathroom was pretty spacious compared to other hotels I stayed in Italy.
- Richard (6/5): FCO Airport Hotel - The Hotel Rodrigo is a quaint hotel within easy reach of the Rome airport (30 euro taxi 15 minutes). It is clean and interesting but do not stay anytime between July and early September... they have no air conditioning.
- Rich (8/5): Rodrigo de Vivar - Not at all what we expected - My wife, 5 year-old son and I went on a recent vacation and wanted to stay somewhere near the Fiumicino airport on our last night in Italy - to save cost and minimize delay.
I searched for a hotel near the airport at a decent cost and Rodrigo de Vivar came up as a good choice.
After arriving back in the Fiumicino airport we figured it would be a quick taxi ride. However, none of the taxi drivers were aware of the hotel! We finally figured out where it was but when we arrived it was not as expected.
What I didn't realize is that we booked a 'countryside cottage' instead of a regular room! Arriving in pitch black, driving into what appeared to be 'the middle of nowhere', and being further from the airport than expected we were a little panicked.
However, after putting our bags in our room, saying 'hi' to a few horses, and sitting down to a wonderful dinner it all worked out in the end.
I would recommend staying here...but know what you ar ebooking and avoid the shock :)
A van picked us up and brought us to reception to have a continental breakfast (included) and the Ostia ruins were only a 3-block walk away.
The sea is about 3km's away which is too far for most people to walk. Keep this in mind as I thought we'd have the opportunity to dip our toes without the need for a taxi or bus.
- JL (4/5): Rodrigo de Vivar - We stay in this hotel because it was close to the airport, but the taxi from the airport was 40 euros, same for a trip to Rome, the train took close to 45 minutes despite the hotel was next to the airport.
The following morning we ask to the manager of the hotel for a taxi for next morning, he told us the airport was next door 5 minutes, It was 15 minutes. The taxi has problems to find the hotel, so finally we lost our flight.
If you want to be close to the airport choose a Hotel with shuttle or from a chain. This is not a choice. Probably if you want to be in the country with kids could work.
- Mary (8/5): Don't settle for boring airport hotel when you can have enchanting historic room overlooking castle - Don't settle for a boring airport hotel when you can have a charming historic b&b in an ancient area. Perfect surroundings. The castle, the courtyard, the castle wall and the Osteria Antica ruins. You must leave time to go walk thru this area. Also, we didn't get to eat at the country restaurant but heard from other guests that it was awesome. That is are only regret. I will say that I splept in the bedroom of unit 19 and it was very noisy due to traffic. But, it was worth it and i used ear plugs to make it thru. Very nice owner. Very reasonable rate.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - rates high for location. isolated area. language barrier in hotel and location. beds were upstairs and downstairs. no air conditioning, tv did not work. no room phone. no alarm clock. if all you want to do is read and sleep - this is your place.
- Peter (8/5): Good choice - We chose the Rodrigo de Vivar to overnight before our flight home. We felt it would have much more character than one of the "airport hotels". We were not disappointed. Our room was located within the castle walls. It was comfortable. Also within the walls are a number of local residents, who socialize on the street and give a lively feel to the experience. The surrounding town was very Italian. Several resturants are nearby - the one we chose offered one of the tasty dishes we had on the trip. If you have time, visit the adjacent ancient Roman exacavations. One note - the only road to Oustie, where the hotel is located, is very congested at rush hour. It took an hour to go only a few kilometers. We expected to find a problem of some sort but there was none, it seems that is the way it is every day. The trip to the airport on a Saturday morning was a breeze - probably 12 minutes but I would ask about it if leaving during a weekday rush hour.
- Brandy (10/5): Do not miss the opportunity to stay in a beautiful hotel with an even more amazing history. - We have been to Europe 6 times in our 14 years of marriage and I have to say that this is one of the hotels we will not forget (in a positive way). The hotel is surrounded by history. The rooms are beautifully decorated with antique furniture and are surrounded by mini gardens. The staff were very welcoming and were happy to assist us in any way we required. The hotel is very close to the airport but you will not hear a plane or feel the thunder of one over head. You get the feeling that you are in the middle of the country when you are only 20 to 30 minutes away (drive) from downtown Rome. Give yourself a gift and stay at the hotel. Tourer the castle and the country ground, they are not to be missed!
- Kathy (6/5): Rodrigo de Vivar in Rome - Rates seemed high for what it was. Room was nice, but lots of dust up high. My husband kept sneezing from the dust. Bathroom shower spigot was non-existant. Room was fairly comfortable. Since there is no outside hallway, we had some men sitting on our stoop having a loud conversation during the evening that made us a little uncomfortable. The breakfast and hostess were wonderful, but for the price we would not stay here again.
- Theresa (10/5): Comfortable way to go back in time - We had a 23 hour stop-over in Rome and decided to stay here because it is fairly near the airport and there were sights to see in our time there. Our taxi driver had a hard time finding it but did not rip us off on the fare. Once we arrived we were put in a room overlooking the castle there. Across from the castle is Ostica Antica, ruins from an ancient city which was an amazing sight to see. There are quite a few restaurants in the area and are reasonably priced and the staff at all were very friendly and helpful. The staff at the hotel were also friendly and helpful, arranging for us to get back to the airport for our early flight the next morning.
- Art (8/5): Convenient to FCO & great ruins - It's a little run down, but the room was a large living with separate bedroom & the people friendly. Charming village with good restaurant & pizza parlor only 1 block. The ruins were fabulous & easy walking distance. They are extensive, but not well marked. The Rodrigo gave us a book in English to take with us giving maps & details of the ruins. Only 10 minutes to the airport! This hotel is not for everyone, but we enjoyed it & will go back.
- Gary (6/5): Really old building - We were told by the owner that the building is 600 yrs old. It is fun, clean, and in a great little town not far from the airport. We chose it as an "airport" hotel assuming it wouldn't cost too much for a morning cab ride to the airport. Way wrong. it was about $40 for 5 kilomters. Don't use this as an airport hotel, get closer to the airport. Highway robbery! Cab's fault, not the hotel's. But it is a cute town & a hotel w/ character and history.
- Kim (8/5): Great for what we needed - We stayed here at the end of our 10 day trip throughout Italy. It was closest hotel we could find to airport that had availabilty. The town is very small so don't expect to do much but it was quaint and nice. Had great gelato and two of best meals on trip. By far the biggest rooms on our entire trip. Loved the decor and the nearby castle. A church right next door was small and beautiful. Sugggest it for a fun place to stay for to/from airport.
- Kevin (10/5): Wonderful Hotel and Staff - We booked the country rooms and did not realize you needed a car to get to them. The hotel manager went ahead and let us stay in the apartments that are right across the street from the ruins without charging us more for the rooms. Also all the staff was very friend and the rooms where very unique. We leave before breakfast, so they also made us a little basket of goodies that we could take. If you travel in the hot summer (End of May to Mid Sept), note that they don't have a/c and have mosquitoes. For Oct. it was fine sleeping with windows open and letting the breeze cool the room, some rooms did have fans (ours didn't and we slept fine). I would stay there again, only 10mins from the airport by car too.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Outstanding Ambiance - Outstanding ambiance. Very quaint! Very old. We'd go back anytime.
- Tom (8/5): Nice change of pace from the standard hotel rooms - This was a welcome change of pace from standard hotel rooms and allowed us to sample life of "natives". Room is in a castle courtyard with a small church. The manager/owner is a wonderful lady who did a great job arranging for a cab. She made a wonderful little continental breakfast and great cappucino. Portable A/C in suite, but the vent for the hot air did not go outside so it did not cool. Convenient to airport-about 30 euro cab fare.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Needs Improvement - The hotel rating and description needs to be reviewed. It is not a four star property.
No hot water in room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Dishonest description, disappointing experience - My husband and I stayed at this hotel on our last night in Italy. The photos available on Hotels.com included two shots of an outdoor pool, and we were really looking forward to relaxing after our two week vacation. The staff member looked utterly confused when I asked about the pool, and then said it was 3 km away and that we would need to take a bus to get there. The room itself was on a very busy street (nothing "resort" about it), and didn't feel completely safe with barred windows and door. It was convenient to the ruins, and close to the airport. The staff did arrange for a 5:30 am taxi for us, but didn't tell us that the 10 minute ride would cost 35 Euro, due in advance with no change available. (The cab from Rome all the way out to Ostia Antica was only 45 Euro.)
- Shelly (8/5): Charming but a Few Problems - This hotel is not really a hotel but a castle. Our room was actually a little suite with a kitchen, upstairs bedroom and a bed downstairs on the first floor. It was pretty charming however there is no A/C or screens on the windows so my daughter got about 70 mosquito bites (she counted them). Hard to tell if it was really clean because everything is so ancient. The towels, sheets and bathroom were clean but the floors and especially the rugs were questionable. The women who run the place are very sweet and friendly so we enjoyed it. There isn't many places to eat within walking distance (only one was open when we were there) but the restaurant we went to had the best pizza we had the whole trip. The Roman ruins are about a block away but we didn't get a chance to go. It is very close to the airport. If you don't mind a few mosquito bites or are visiting at a time other than summer, it isn't a bad place to see.
- Bruce (8/5): Fine for a short stay -Great ruins - We stayed here the night before leaving from Fiumicino. We came from the south and be forewarned, the road signs are awful. Getting to the airport was a breeze. By car it's a 10 minute drive, at least on Saturday morning. The ruins and castle are well worth a visit. The restaurant looked very good but we didn't eat there. Breakfast was far better than I expected. We had cappuccino, fresh rolls, cakes and juice. It was quite adequate. One of the two rooms we had in the main inn was wonderful, very interesting and spacious the other was bi-level, smaller but fine. It was quite hot and there were fans but neither had air conditioning. There are fine toiletries, even travel toothbrushes in the bathroom.
- Andrew (2/5): Not Impressed - No one at the hotel spoke English so it was difficult to get directions. The room had no air conditioning and the windows didn't have screens. Bugs flew in all night biting us.
- jerry (4/5): ok unless stay at farm - We did not feel secure on the farm. Remote, dark at night, no AC so if windows open, at ground level, did not feel safe.
- Matt (10/5): A little slice of italy - My wife and I really enjoyed this hotel. We stayed in one of the apartments with a window over looking a small courtyard in front of a castle. It was a two minute walk to "Ostia Antica" some great Roman ruins. Many good restaurants, bars, and very friendly people.
