Guest Reviews
- marypanou (2/5): Zero Flexibility and No Understanding in a Time of Crisis - Unfortunately, our experience with Hotel La Fenice was extremely disappointing. We had a reservation for early March 2025, but due to the nationwide strike in Greece following the tragic train accident in Tempi, all transportation was suspended, including our flight.
Despite providing full documentation and kindly requesting either a rescheduling of our stay or a partial refund, the hotel showed no understanding or flexibility whatsoever. They refused to accommodate our situation, even though it was clearly a case of force majeure, and not a personal cancellation.
As 25-year-old students, this trip meant a lot to us, and losing the entire amount without any empathy or effort to assist was truly disheartening. We would not recommend this hotel based on their lack of customer care and rigid approach to an exceptional circumstance.
- FRANCISCO (8/5): - Many things to do around the area
- Stephanie (2/5): Bed bug infestation - Bed bug infestation. Horrible. If I could give 0 stars. Stay away. I had to wake up early for a tour and was met with a bed bug on the bed. I immediately grabbed it with tissue and put in the a ziplock I use when traveling. I called downstairs and the worker said we will take a look later.
When I returned from my trip I went to front desk to request a change of room. The man had an attitude like he didn’t want to give me a new room and said they found nothing there and why I came so late as if I was supposed lose out on our tour of 600 I paid for my kids and I.
I moved my room from 401 to 101. Next day found a bed bug there. Found out they were cleaning the other room and ran up to cleaning lady to alert her. They got staff and they found a third bed bug full of blood in the new bed.
They switched me to the sister hotel around the block. It was my last night so everything was so fast. All I did was moved around. I requested a refund and laundry service as I do not want to bring these bugs home.
The hotel said I have to wait a week since manager is on vacation so they have no answer for me. Hotels.com only wants to give me 150 rewards. I have been a loyal customer for years.
This is all around a disgusting hotel. I saw they placed another family that same night after having found the bed bug. They did not care. They did not even have enough time to fumigate. They are spreading and leaving the bugs there. Unacceptable
- Boris (8/5): - Excellent location. Friendly staff. Needs updating
- Adradas-Shanghai (6/5): Clean, good location - Clean and decent hotel in a very central location, but in a quiet street.
Hotel has no reception which is a bit inconvenient, as you need to go around the corner to their sister hotel for check- in and check - out
Air con functioned well
Bathroom is spacious and renovated, shower with enough hot water and pressure. Besides the bathroom the hotel is a bit outdated,
- Michael (8/5): City Break - Hotel situated very convenient to city centre. Hotel staff were very friendly. Reception at the hotel was not staffed and had to use the reception at nearby Hotel Concordia.
- Grettel (4/5): - This hotel is not what it used to be. I had stayed in here, and I remember friendly staff. Now you have no contact with them unless you go to a different property/hotel. There is no one at the front desk. You have to go to a different hotel to check in or any other issue you may have. I would never come back to this hotel again.
- Edward (6/5): - Sean in the breakfast terrace was excellent.
Housekeeping was helpful.
Service at the desk at the Concordia was not very helpful.
- deanwzorad (2/5): Hotel Le Horrible - Well where do I start…
We arrived in the sweltering heat to be greeted with a sign on the front door that we had to go to another hotel, Hotel Concordia, to check in, as there is no staff at reception for Hotel Le Fenice.
Upon receiving the keys to the property, Room 202, we made our way to the room and immediately smelt a strong odour of mould. There were mould stains on the ceiling with little flies around it. We turned the aircon on to try and get rid of the smell as the room felt very damp, but this appeared to make it worse.
The aircon was on some sort of timer, which switched off every 5 minutes and sounded like a small jet engine when starting back up.
The shower filled up water and took a while to drain, and due to slow drainage, the shower left dirt behind in the tray.
The sink was cracked and looked very poor.
The bed had a mattress topper on top, which was too big for the mattress, so when you slept on the edge it felt like you were going to slide off the bed. My partner and I were very itchy laying on the bed, which we were concerned about as we had previously read reviews about bed bugs.
The Wifi does not work in the room, you need to go out into the hallway.
Due to the strong odour of mould I could not sleep and spent most of the night/morning in the hotel foyer to get away from the room.
I advised the hotel staff at Hotel Concordia the following day of the foul mould odour and everything else wrong with the room, and that we will be checking out as we have found alternate accomodation, to which the hotel staff said “ I’m sorry about your stay”.
There was no offer to move into another room, nor was there any offer of a refund for the second night, or a partial refund for the first night.
Do not stay at this property.
- R7625YTcarmenf (4/5): NOT AS ADVERTISED! - Hotel la Fenice is not as advertised!!! The pictures are a lie! There is no front desk reception. You need to lug your luggage up the uneven road and around the block to Hotel Concordia. The place smells like mold. I booked a 'Basic' room with a double bed. I expected it to be in a full service hotel with a front desk/security and to not be musty. Do not trust the pictures!!!
- Carmen (4/5): - I booked a room at Hotel la Fenice in Metropolitan Rome, through Expedia. The pictures online were nothing like the hotel or room that is advertised on line. There is no front desk service at all-EVER(so, no security), despite the pictures on line that show a beautiful reception area and a person behind the desk. The tiny room was musty, moldy, and very, very basic. The outside of the building was dirty and disgusting. Don't trust the pictures for Hotel la Fenice 'basic room'. I expected more going through Expedia. Very disappointed.
- msjsnow (2/5): Bed bugs. Enough said. - If you like service men walking into your room without notice, moldy food at the breakfast buffet and - to top it off- bed bugs, then this is the hotel for you!
We really wanted to like this hotel after it was recommended to us. The location is excellent and the staff are so kind. That is the only positive thing I can say about our stay.
The first hiccup was when three maintenance guys tried to come into our room without notice. We had gone back to our room to freshen up and because house cleaning had already come by, I didn't think to put the "Do Not Disturb' sign on the door. My bad because we got a shock when three guys opened our door and were about to come it to check out our air conditioner. Not really a big deal but it was weird.
The biggest complaint is the bed bugs. Enough said. We're working with the hotel on a partial refund but this experience was just the worst. We met another family in the lobby who also had bed bugs in their room.
The people who referred this hotel to us visited years ago and they had a really charming stay. When we're looking for places to stay, the location and cleanliness are our main concerns - we don't need anything posh or fancy - just a safe and clean place to sleep.
I really hope this hotel can get the bed bug situation taken care of because it is really cute and, again, the staff were excellent.

- ElenaBeverley (2/5): This is more like a hostel ! - In my experience the hotel and service are very poor, will not stay again.
We had a room for 3 adults so they put a chair-bed that was very clumsy and stable (imagine sleeping on it ) . The mattress kept sliding down keeping me awake.
There is nobody in reception , for anything you have to go to another hotel.
I came back late from work and found that the cleaner left only 2 towels , no shampoo or toilet paper . I called reception at 11pm and was told to go to another hotel to sort it or tomorrow .
Air conditioner didn’t work or literally didn’t work so was suffocating in the heat.
Breakfast hardly any choices …
And stairs is all stained and dirty.
Shame as this hotel is in the amazing location !
- Rebecca (6/5): - Hotel was very conveniently located for sightseeing and for the price was fairly good value. The staff were also friendly and helpful. The property seemed fairly clean until we were biten by bedbugs during the night, which means we wouldn't stay there again unfortunately.
- Beverly (8/5): Great little place. - It should have been clear that we needed to check in at another hotel down the street. They forgot our third bed, but promptly brought it. The room was immaculate. They allowed us to store our luggage and it was in our room when we checked in. The young man at the front desk was wonderful. All the employees we encountered were nice. The rooftop breakfast buffet was great as were the girls that served it. Location was great. Overall a good experience and I would recommend it.
- Rudolph2011 (2/5): Bed Bugs in the bed! And personnel on duty was not cared about my concern - he room was gloomy. Dark. We arrived at night from southern Italy. Then my daughter, sitting on her bed, saw animals coming out of it. They were bedbugs. They grow in dirty and humid environments. What interests me the most was that the person in charge of the mob doesn't care. The room was in the shade. Dark. We arrived at night from the south of Italy. Then my daughter, sitting on her bed, saw animals coming out of it. They were bedbugs. They grow in dirty and humid environments. What bothered me the most was that the person in charge of the mafia didn't care about me. He told me that everything was full and that he could not do anything. I asked him for my money and he told me qje until tomorrow for something from his payment system. I never imagined that I would see more insects in Rome than in South and Central America. Do not come to this hotel! They sell it very well but it's a lie! It's midnight and I didn't get my money all back and I couldn't do anything. It was not chep
- Trip426971 (6/5): Basic Accomodations - To check in to the hotel you will need to go up the street and around to corner to another hotel, then walk back to Hotel La Fenice.... a bit tedious especially with luggage. Room was clean, but tiny. The breakfast is served on the rooftop, also a bit cramped and small but not too bad. Thankfully I was only staying for 1 night.
Wi Fi was terrible and not reliable.
- Jane (4/5): - first day in hotel could not get wifi. Found front desk lady rude. Bed is not comfortable and room is small. Street entrance is rough.
On plus side, relatively well located for access to places to see. The breakfast was decent and fellow looking after it was great.
- Arkadiy (8/5): - Perfectly located, clean and cosy hotel. Friendly staff.
- Dhruvsky (4/5): Stay elsewhere - We booked for two nights this past week, with the free cancellations and also free bottle of sparkling wine & breakfast package. This hotel is not as described- the reception area was at another hotel a few blocks away. Our room phone was broken, making it challenging to communicate with the off-site reception. We also had to walk there to checkout in the dark at 4 am with luggage. We never received the sparking wine & were told housekeeping ‘forgot’ and that we could get it the next day (which we couldn't do bc we were flying out early). When we had to unexpectedly check out a day early they were unwilling to give us any refund or discount on the room despite the above. The upshot is that it was an easy walk to both Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. But, so are many other hotels.
- dalia (10/5): - Perfect location near Spanish steps and Trevi fountain
- Dennis (6/5): - Great location. Small room. Beds were hard and uncomfortable Staff was friendly but located half a block away in a different hotel. The breakfast was good and good nearby restaurants. It’s just a sleeping spot in a good location for is
- Rosy (8/5): - The rooms are pretty small and you can hear what’s going on in the rooms next to you. Location is okay. Some of the staff are not very friendly
- jbelle030 (8/5): Small Hotel in great location - Small older hotel in a great location, has all the basics for a short stay within walking distance to so many Rome attractions. Bathroom outdated but included breakfast on rooftop was pleasant as was happy hour with complimentary Prosceco. Ideal for a short stopover before our cruise, staff most helpful.
- ahmed (6/5): - Staff friendly, rooms very small,
Spent two nights, the second was sleepless because of the noise from other guests likely partying too much.
Check-in at a neighboring hotel.
Breakfast was good.
Location great,
Overall convenient for night stay while exploring Rome
- janhug0e (6/5): Nice roofterrace, gloomy room. - The roofterrace, the breakfast and breakfastroom was very pleasant.
But the only acces is by a tiny lift. Our room had a little window towards a small, ugly backyard.
The room interior definitely needs an upgrade.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The property was quaint and space limited but comfortably and unique. Old world charm and the space was efficient and warm.
- Richard (8/5): Nice Place - We stayed one night coming in to Rome. Room was in a good location with lots of options for food and shopping. Bed comfortable and decent space in the room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel was good and in a good location. Staff very accommodating.
- Ian_Pratt (4/5): Old and very basic - I stayed at the Hotel La Fenice for 2 nights in March 2019.
Check in was far more complicated than it should have been as it was conducted at another hotel around the corner from the Fenice...you're then sent back into the night with your bags to find where you are actually staying.
The Fenice is in an old, creaking building with two or three rooms per floor. My room was a decent size, but has seen better days (and it saw them quite some time ago). Bathroom was small and in need of work. There was a welcome free minibar (even with a beer in it for me!), and wifi was fast and free.
Sleep quality was badly impacted by a small, yappy dog in the room next to me, which I presume had been left there by its late-dining owners.
Breakfast was served on a pleasant roof top area, but was really not worth bothering with.
Check out was back around the corner.
So, just OK. There are literally hundreds of hotels in the same area, and I can't think of a particular reason to choose this one.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel is perfectly located so you can walk to the most popular tourist attractions. The staff is very helpfull and treats the guests in the best way. The only inconvenience was checkin/checkout in the other property about 200m away but this is not smth crucial. Overall it was perfect stay. Value for money
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel is perfectly located close enough to the most popular touristic attractions. The staff is very helpfull and treats the guests in the best way. The only inconvenience is chick-in/-out in the other property located about 200m away but this is not crucial. Highly recommend this hotel for everyone who cares about value for money.
- ODED (10/5): Great! - Great staff, great location, great service!
The room is very small, but that's the only downside I can think of.
- Almog (10/5): Surprisly VERY good. AMAZING location - Location super amazing.
Device was great.
Walked in just one wall had lots of shoes marks on the wall looked dirty and upseting at first. But honestly everything was clean.
Shower super clean and comfortable. Room little small but that’s the price for great price and amazing location. Breakfast was super romantic everything was just great definitely coming back. And my brother already booked it for two months from now because our recommendation:)))
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice little hotel. Although it’s not the main building (check-in/out and after hours’ service is at the Concordia Hotel, located few meters away), they offer some free amenities that make up for this. Great location. Close to Spanish stairs and Trevi Fountain.
- karenpQ4620IF (10/5): City break - After being let down by another travel company, the staff at Hotel Finice came to our rescue. They were very helpful in finding us a room and for extending our stay with them. All of the staff are polite and friendly. Room was clean with quality bed linen and towels. Continental breakfast was good and the young man serving could not have been more helpful. Good value for money and would definitely stay here again.
- EllaOscar (10/5): Great location - Great location and easy access to Metro, or walk up the hill to the top of the Spanish Steps, or down the hill to the Trevi Fountain. Adequate rooms, fabulous roof top breakfast and a complimentary mini-bar.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Everything was great except the shower water was freezing and they couldn’t fix it. Lucky it was hot outside.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Hotel Pincio - We were actually moved to Hotel Pincio around the corner from La Fenice.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The check in was not in the same street had to walk around the corner to another hotel to check in. It’s a 3 Star, I think it’s more like a 1 star. Room smell was so bad had to open the window.
- Rome Treveler (6/5): Awesome location near da trevi fountain - The Hotel is cosy, without a lobby, however the location couldn't be better.
Absolutely in the center of rome, a walk away from all the big attractions.
- The Room was OK, not the biggest but not small at all.
- The sheets weren't so clean so we asked the reception to change them.
- The reception is available 24/7 and the staff is really nice and helpfull.
- The breakfast is a bit poor but it's on the roof and it's pretty nice to sit there.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice quant hotel. - It was a small hotel but helpful staff. The room was very drab and the mattress was a little too hard..
- Sy (10/5): "Happy Hour!" - This is a cute, boutique style hotel in a central location in Rome. First of all, I am so pleased with our welcome fruits and wine. They gave us and refilled 3 cans of soda, beer, regular and sparkling water. They also have a happy hour from 6-10pm where you can have free apps like chips, bits and drinks including red and white wine. They have a huge breakfast buffet from 7-10:30 am with eggs, slices of ham and cheese, bread, pastries (lots of it!), fruits and veggies, cookies and of course coffee. They really feed you well you don't have to go out and spend for your meals! I love this hotel!
- Linda (8/5): Small hotel ideally situated for touring Rome. - Wonderful break. Very nice clean hotel. It would of been nice if there had been a reception/bar area where we could of had a drink/coffee etc. We loved the rooftop where we had breakfast and complementary drinks were provided early evening. Highly recommended.
- Margaret (8/5): Nice, classic, old-time hotel in excellent locale. - Our two rooms were clean and functional. Lots of built-in furniture. Great breakfast each morning on the rooftop terrace. Also included afternoon "happy hour" with wine and snacks on the same terrace. Located in very handy area for easy walking to many sites. Good restaurants nearby and also an ATM.
- Margaret (10/5): Rome stay - Clean and comfortable hotel. I stayed here for two days before my flight out of Rome. The staff were very helpful and accommodating for my short trip. I also truly enjoyed the mini bar drinks that were included in the room. The hotel also had a complimentary happy hour with wines and snacks on the rooftop deck. The hotel is less than a 5 minute walk to the Trevi fountain. On another note the receptionist that was there on our last night was so nice and noticed that we were up very late before our early morning flight and called us in the morning to wake us up when he didn't see us downstairs. It was very sweet.
- Steven (8/5): Great location and great service - This is our second time staying in this hotel. Friendly staff , and great location.
- sherry (10/5): Highly Recommended!!! - Close to almost all the tourists attractions.
Close to Metro.
Breakfast is very good which is included.
Staff esp Kevin is very helpful.
Frée drinks. Wine & chips for free from 6pm to 10pm.
I will definitely come back the next time i visit Rome and will highly recommend it
- sue (10/5): The hotel was awesome - Hotel Fenice is in a brilliant location between the Spanish steps and the Trevi fountain, it's also close to the main bus routes.
The staff were faultless doing everything they could to help us from helping getting me soya goods for breakfast to recommending the best pizza restaurant. They helped direct us to key sites and were very attentive to detail.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting Rome especially if you want a smaller hotel rather than a chain which would be my preference.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - shower tube not work properly
- Verified traveler (8/5): Central location close to all sites within walking - We would not recommend the BLUE hop on hop off bus as the commentary was not in synke with the sites, most ear phones did not work in the sockets.the bus ran every 20to 25 minutes compared to the other buses.
- Karl (6/5): A decent hotel - a very small hotel. The room would have been ok as a double - but they sold it to us for a triple. By the time the 3rd bed was in the room, it was really tight. Also the bathtub was quite inconvenient for showering. The location is ok. The staff was very friendly and helpful. So overall I probably would choose it again. It served the purpose of a good night sleep in the historical center of Rome.
- Ian (8/5): Lovely quaint hotel, helpful staff - This is a lovely small hotel, it could do with a little TLC in the rooms but the friendly staff in particular Asif, he is a mind of information. This makes up for the little it lacks in its attention to detail, after all you dont come to Rome to stay in the room, its such a magical place. The roof terrace is a lovely way to relax with a free glass of Proseco after a day exploring. This hotel is ideal for the location of walking distance to the majority of the main sites of Rome. An ideal place to stay if you are not to fussy and want advice and help from very friendly staff.
- Emily (10/5): Perfect stay, beautiful location!! - Had an amazing experience at this hotel. Arrived early and room was ready for us. Location was beautiful right by the Spanish steps, metro and hop on/off bus a stones throw away. Couldn't fault the service As staff were friendly and helpful with booking trips. The breakfast was just lovely, fresh coffee and pastries were just filling. Wine each evening on the balcony was a treat, the fridge was always full with drinks and room cleaned daily. The only downfall was the noise of the traffic, but a pack of earplugs resolved that no problem. My next trip to Rome will be here!!!! 5*+++++
- Teresa (6/5): Great location - The staff at the hotel is great. The hotel itself needs a bit of upgrade.
The room was standard, the only downfall was the the bathroom door didn't close, we were three in a room and
they kept giving us two towels and not three,, i needed to call them on a daily basis to bring a towel, as for toilet paper, they give you a roll a day, and someday nothing. The breakfast was really continental... I dont believe this hotel was rated proplerly.
It did the job for us for our 8 day stay...Not completely satisfied.
- Debbie (6/5): Well located, great rooftop deck. - Enjoyed the free wine on the rooftop deck in the evenings. The staff were wonderful. The rooms were a little tired but since we were out all day and the location was great, all was well.
- Imran (10/5): Excellent - Good hotel, ideal location to all sights, staff were extremly friendly with the added bouness of being very very very helpfull.
A excellent bargin for a three star hotel. You can not go wrong with this one....
- Michelle (2/5): DO. NOT. STAY - Will never stay at this hotel again! Our stay was very unsatisfactory- upon checking in we found many issues with the room. The biggest issue was the broken air conditioning unit. Because of the broken unit (which they told us about after we complained in the evening), the room was too hot to sleep at night. We spoke to the reception about our issue and they said they "should" have the unit fixed by the next day, but were very dismissive about the complaint. We asked for ice to cool us down and after 45 minutes they brought us a bowl of 5 ice cubes. Later when I called down they said they couldn't bring me anymore. For the price we paid for the rooms, the hotel should have provided each guest with a fan or been much more understanding of complaints. The room also smelled like sewage, the ceiling was flaking off and the bathroom door had a hole in it. We understand maintenance issues occur at hotels, but the management needs to handle it in a proper way instead of making guests feel bad for not being satisfied with the room. We did have one great employee help us move rooms for the last few nights (even though the AC was not working their either, it was higher up that we could crack the window open without it being too loud). I have emailed a complaint to the hotel and they have not responded. Would highly advise finding another hotel in Rome thats more worth the few hundred dollars!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice hotel close to Trevi fountain - It was in the 70s and 80s but the hotel didn't turn its air on yet so we were melting in our room.
- Verified traveler (2/5): La Fenice Needs Repair - We booked 2 rooms at this property for our family of 5. After 3 weeks in Europe in various hotels this was by far the worst hotel we stayed in. The lobby itself smelled like sewage. By day 2 our entire family was showering in only one of the room's bathrooms because the other bathroom was nearly unusable. The tub was cracked and had obviously been cracked for a significant amount of time. There was black mold growing in the crack and water flooded onto the floor when you used the shower. The other shower also flooded onto the floor. After our room had been "cleaned" the puddle of water was still on the floor. It became a running joke placing bets on whether the puddle would be there throughout the duration of our stay. We weren't going to complain because they are obviously aware of the maintenance issues. These aren't problems that can go unnoticed by staff or owners.
On day 2 after a long day of sight seeing we realized that the room had not been vacuumed and the "free mini bar" was restocked at half of the contents of the previous day. Sounds insignificant, but by day 3 when your room still hasn't been vacuumed and you have 3 people in and out of the room the lack of vacuuming is pretty apparent. Our room was not vacuumed once during our stay.
Positives: Reception is friendly and the hotel is located near restaurants, shopping and sites. Taking that into account I could not consider booking at this property again after our stay.
- Chris (6/5): Central hotel - Very helpful staff but the overall hotel was a bit rundown. But against this, it is in a good location for metro and areas of interest.
- Nabil (6/5): Excellent location - We stayed over for 3 nights. When we checked in, we were disappointed. What we got was very different of what the photos at the website suggested to be. Although clean, the room we had was modest and overlooked a dark place. Despite this disappointment, I would say that the staff is very friendly and always willing to help. The breakfast is served on the roof top of the building in a nice overlooking space. The breakfast was quite good. Overall, It is a good place to stay if you don't care about the room standing. Enjoy Rome.
- Diane (10/5): Good value for money - It was fabulous!
Reception is a little on the small side but its clean, bright and welcoming. We arrived earlier than the stated check in time and were greeted by the smiling young man on reception (his name is Asif). We were fully prepared to have to go for a coffee till check in time but Asif had our room ready and let us know the times of breakfast and that the mini bar in our room was free.
Our room, The Palatine, was on the 4th floor, so we used the elevator. Again a little small and I suppose it would be a very tight squeeze if we had larger luggage. On opening our room door we were pleasantly surprised. It was a good size, clean, well laid out and the bathroom was spotless. The fridge mini bar had a few cans of soft drinks, a beer, a couple of bottles of water and was replenished daily, this really was a lovely touch. The wardrobe had a safe (In facilities it only mentions there is a safe box at reception so having one in the room was an unexpected bonus). .Wifi was free, signal was good in our room, a little patchy on the terrace and non existent in reception.
Breakfast is on the 5th floor roof terrace in a VERY small sun room. While it was clean, and a lovely room to eat in it was difficult to get to the buffet if there was more than 4 people in there. Breakfast was a selection of small bread rolls, ham and cheese slices, pots of yogurt. bread for toasting, pastries and boxes of cereal. Although we enjoyed breakfast I'd image more than 4 days it gets a bit boring
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great Stay - Got into Rome late due to flight delay at Helsinki. Had to spend the first night at the sister hotel Concordia (down the road from La Fenice). The room that I was to be at La Fenice was under maintenance and the staff was kind enough to assure me that my room would be available the next morning. The room at Concordia was a far cry from La Fenice. The shower space is really tight and had a cold shower before moving to La Fenice after breakfast, as the hot water did not work.
The room in La Fenice is spacious and the open mini bar well stocked. Breakfast at the rooftop terrace is simple and the staff was kind to help disposed my burnt toast (which I had forgotten) and made me some perfect toast to go with the cappuccino that the hotel offers to all hotel guests.
Hotel staff was helpful to offer advice on how to get to the tourist spots and metro stations near the hotel. Restaurants aplenty within walking distance and McDonald's too to suit the mood for different cuisine.
Would book the same hotel next time when back in Rome for vacation.
- Gabrielle (6/5): Better value for money elsewhere - Hotel La Fenice was fine. Location was good but service was lacking. I think we could have found more value for
money elsewhere.
Breakfast left much to be desired. Bread and croissants were stale, fruit juice was artificial.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The rooms are a bit , but very clean. This was the cleanest hotel that we stayed at in italy. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Strange beginning - When we arrived we were told they had overbooked and did not have a room , but they had booked us in a 4 star hotel not far away. We were shocked and apprehensive needless to say. They paid for our cab and the upgrade and sent us over. It was fabulous!! I do not know what Hotel la Fenice was like, but the hotel we stayed at was wonderful!
- Gail M (10/5): Dental location - The location was fantastic, close to Metro, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps, couldn't ask for more. The staff of the hotel were awesome! Nothing too much trouble and very attentive and friendly, a credit to the hotel. Free happy hour and free minibar was a bonus! :) would definitely return and recommend to others.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Hotel La Fenice - Nice hotel in a great location. Roof top terrace was excellent.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice hotel in centre of Rome - Pleasant hotel in great location in Rome. Staff were more than helpful and free wifi was accessible even on the roof deck. Would stay again if they fixed the bathroom!
- Girl (8/5): - Great little hotel. Room really small, but very nicely arranged. They serve wine and light snacks in their veranda every afternoon. Very nice. Great location, we walked everywhere .
Would definitely recommend for someone who wants a small nice city hotel. Their breakfast was simple but tasteful.
- Tracey (8/5): Small and friendly - Small hotel, excellent location by the trevi fountain and Spanish steps. The hotel staff were very friendly we had a top floor room which I recommend. There was an adequate continental breakfast which kept us going most of the day. We could help ourselves to free drinks fizzy, Red or white wine from 6.00 pm on the small roof terrace when it was dry unfortunately we had thunder and lightening two nights. There was also a free mini bar. I recommend this cosy hotel.
- Julia (8/5): Genuine 3 star hotel in good location. - The hotel receptionist was very welcoming and helpful. Rooms (there were 4 of use each with our own room) were a little shabby but clean with good facilities. Free mini bar with beer, soft drinks and water replenished everyday.
The complimentary continental breakfast was served in a small room on the rooftop. It only had 4 tables but we never had any trouble getting a table.
The only disappointment was that the promised Happy Hour only happened on one night of our three night stay. It's held on the roof top terrace so rain stopped play with no provision to move it to a drier location. Shame as otherwise this is a good little budget hotel. Very close to the Spanish Steps and a with a great choice of bars and restaurants in the local vicinity.
- H (6/5): Basic with benefits. - This is a basic hotel, that pushes itself up with the added extras. The location is excellent, central, with metro easily accessible.
The hotel offers a free mini bar, with water, fizzy drinks and a beer which is replenished daily. A nice touch. Every evening there is a happy hour on the well positioned roof terrace, with free wine. However, be warned, if it rains, the happy hour is cancelled. Not great, particularly as there is a perfectly usable conservatory which could be used instead. However, that said, on the one night we were able to make use of happy hour, it was very pleasant.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly Little Hotel - This is a lovely little hotel, ideally situated near to the Trevi Fountain but not in a quiet street. All of the staff were really friendly and helpful and the roof top terrace is a lovely way to start the evening.
- Italy lovrr (6/5): Close to trevi fountain - The first night we had a tiny room which smelled of sewer gas badly. We were moved to a nicer room m the next night which was odor free and larger but the shower stall only had one door so we you showered water got all over floor. Staff nice and helpful
- Rome Newbie (8/5): Great location and staff, but room small for the price - We have just returned from a weekend trip to Rome and stayed at the Hotel La Fenice. The hotel is in a great location, close to the Spanish steps and Trevi fountain and close enough to a main road so it’s easy to get around and easy to find your way back to. The windows are good enough that you aren't disturbed by traffic noises either. The hotel staff were very friendly and very helpful (i emailed a couple of times before the trip to get ideas of places to visits, restaurants etc#, also very happy to give advice on the best way to get around town etc.
The room itself was disappointing for the price paid. It was small and quite cramped, with the bathroom tucked into a corner. While it was all clean, the bathroom needed updating and redecorating #marks on the bath etc#. Oh and the shower was no good for anyone close to 6 ft. tall. There was also quite a bad smell of sewers which you noticed when you first walked in the room. We asked about this and were told that it was due to the sewer system in the city and that when its warm the smell comes back up through the plumbing. They said they would put some 'product' down the drains to stop this but we didn't notice any difference.
Other good points were that there is a free minibar in the room #limited selection but still it’s better than nothing#, free Wi-Fi throughout the whole hotel, continental breakfast buffet included #although only a small selection# and the rooftop terrace was very nice where they serve free drinks in the evening.
Overall, the good points far outweighed the bad, especially as we didn't spend much time in the room anyway. I would stay here again, but I’d want to make sure I booked much earlier to get a better price.
- Sherry (4/5): Disappointed with our stay for our honeymoon - I booked Hotel La Fenice based on Hotels.com reviews & was disappointed. This was our longest stay in Italy on our honeymoon, 4 days in Rome over Easter. We arrived on Easter morning & our room wasn’t ready. We went to the Vatican for the Popes blessing so they said they’d bring our bags to our room when it was ready. We came back at 1pm, our bags were still in the lobby, but our room was ready. So we brought them up ourselves. Within a few minutes, I noticed a lot of problems. In the bathroom the toilet seat was falling off, the shower door was broken, the tub was dirty, & the sink had a broken stopper so the water couldn’t drain. There was a broken power outlet & crooked lights on the walls. The room smelled awful, like a mix of bad cologne, smoke & air freshener. I was furious & demanded we change rooms. We left for the day & came back to a new room which was better but still smelled bad & had a broken drain stopper they had to fix. The fan was also broken in the bathroom & the first night kept buzzing. Over the next few days, my biggest complaint was the maid service. For some reason they didn’t refill soap, toilet paper, plastic cups, etc. I kept having to ask for things. The wireless also randomly shut off, & I had to ask for them to reset it. They had a rooftop area, but it was tiny & messy. Couldn’t enjoy sitting there. The free breakfast was tiny, which got really boring after 4 days of the same few options. I wouldn't stay there again.

- Verified traveler (6/5): Disappointing start, better after - Room we were given on arrival was barely acceptable, very cramped with a tiny frosted window looking out to a grubby space behind adjacent buildings. Sleep that night was not good, smell mentioned in another review was evident and an extractor fan kept clicking on and off rather noisily. We were moved to a much better room the second day after our daughter complained on our behalf. This room was light and airy with room to move about more, some traffic noise but we would expect that in a city centre hotel. Breakfast was good.
This is not a high price hotel if you want better than this you'd better be prepared to pay more.
- Sue (8/5): Nice hotel, great location - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel La Fenice. The staff was very, very helpful and friendly. The room was comfortable for the three of us and the breakfast on the roof had beautiful views. We were close to the metro, the bus and to the major attractions in Rome. We would definitely stay there again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent location, lovely breakfast - Really nice hotel, close to the Spanish steps and other destinations. The room was a little small but this did not matter at all. There was a mini bar in the room that was stocked daily with a couple of soft drinks, water, a beer and snacks. This was topped up every day free of charge. There was also free wifi with a really good signal which is an added bonus.
There is a lovely roof top terrace where breakfast is served and you can take a few drinks up and make the most of the view. I would definetly book again.
- Mary Jane (6/5): Fantastic location, very central. - First visit to Rome; short stay, chose hotel for its prime location and advertised features, however discovered roof terrace had no refreshments or happy hour facilities. Was looking forward to enjoying skyline view, drinks and chatting to other guests after long day of walking; sadly not available due to previous weeks weather. The hotel staff were always friendly, helpful and doing their very best but could not resolve terrace amenities for my warm & dry four nights.
Rome is glorious, everywhere is walkable from this point, however the cobbles are hard on your feet! The bus ride from airport was good and cheap, with downhill walk to hotel; short uphill taxi ride back to bus terminal worth extra Euros! There are many excellent restaurants within a short walk; can recommend roof top bar by the top of the Spanish Steps, great at sunset with lovely nibbles and a glass of cold Prosecco, enjoy!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Small, friendly hotel in good location - Helpful, friendly & knowledgeable reception staf. Only 9 rooms ,complimentary mini bar -snacks & soft drinks. Buffet breakfast with reasonable slection of items. No bar or lounge for sitting but a small, pleasant roof terrace. Complimentary wine as read in review only available in summer months (from April) . We asked and on April 1st a bottle of Asti was delivered to us on the roof terrace. Very good location.
- Claire (10/5): Excellent location - small but well appointed - Stayed for 5 nights in March 2014. Had requested a twin room in advance, which the hotel confirmed we had been allocated when we emailed them the day before arrival. Room decent size. Beds very firm but comfortable. Bathroom well appointed with toiletries provided. Shower head was a little tricky to keep in the wall fitment but got the hang of it after a couple of tries. Fridge in room with water, 2 cans of soft drink, 1 beer, peanuts and biscuits, all of which was free and replenished daily. Small TV with only about 4 channels in English (news or music channels). Room quite warm but did have windows that opened. Staff very friendly and willing to help. Continental breakfast with good range of options. Only 4 tables inside - so if everyone arrives for breakfast at the same time there are not enough seats, but this only happened on one occasion. Excellent location about 5 minute walk to Trevi fountain and numerous restaurants. Walked to all major sights (including the Vatican) without difficulty. Overall excellent small hotel in brilliant location.
- james (10/5): Nice hotel great location - Hotel was in excellent location to all attractions. We walked all over the city. Staff there was tremendous in helping us out with booking tickets on train .( web site was in Italian) morning continental breakfast upstairs was great. The room was Alittle small but fine!! We would definetely go and stay there again!!!
- sarah (8/5): Great location - Small lovely hotel. EXTREMLY well located.
Absolutely loved it!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect mid-tier hotel - Good central location with lovely staff. Great value for money. Would recommend to anyone visiting Rome.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very Good - Small hotel, small rooms but good position and exceptional service and staff.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Hotel La Fenice Rome - On arrival at this hotel we were given the keys to our room which all I can say was disappointing to say the least. The room was a box and you could not swing a cat in it. The cleanliness of the room was terrible and smelt of sewage. In addition to this the TV did not work, we asked one of the staff to help to try and fix it but with no success. Thankfully we are given another room which was bigger but the smell of sewage was still apparent.
It was also disappointing that there was no bar to relax into after a hard days sightseeing, on the website it states happy hour on the terrace which they did not do and you can hardly call it a terrace with breath-taking views of Rome!
Breakfast was ok, but the whole experience was what not we expected.
- Lucy (10/5): A small, warm and convenient hotel in center Rome - The hotel is small, the room is small but everyone works there are very warm. They try their best to make our stay comfortable and satisfy. The morning breakfast is very memorable. Although the dinner room is small, the food type is plenty and have all most every thing we can think of. The cappuccino is fresh made for every guest. The dinner table is beautifully arranged. We like the fresh boiled eggs. It's so much better than American organic eggs. The apple taste great (also much better than American organic apple). The dinner room is always full. No one skip breakfast. The good breakfast is great help to start our daily activity during our stay.
We especially appreciated hotel staff tried several times to find us a right type of AC adaptor. We did bring two adaptors and two extend board. But only one adaptor is the correct type. Both extend boards are not fit the adaptor. It made our life so much easier. Otherwise, we would only have one outlet to charge our camera, ipad, and phone. I cannot think how hard that will be.
Hotel La Fenice is sweet. We will recommend this hotel to friends and wish to come back.
- Karen (10/5): Great location - This is a great little hotel. The rooms are clean and the minibar is restocked daily. The staff is excellent. We booked several excursions which left early in the morning and they had breakfast packed to go with us. The continental breakfast is good and the cappuchino is great. The location is very convenient to the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, shops and restaurants. We walked nearly everywhere. Would definetly stay here again.
- Maria (10/5): The location of the hotel is perfect - The hotel is close to the metro Trevi fountain spanish steps and many other locations. clean surroundings. friendly staff. Thanks to Gabriel, Alexia and Estefania staff of the hotel the stay was super. great recomendation of what to do and where to eat. very clean rooms and bathroom. you can smell to clean linnen of the beds. we were a group of 8 and all of us recomend this small very family oriented hotel. on the roof is the breakfast. small but nice. we came from Aruba with very nice and big hitels but still enjoyed this small hotel very much
- Verified traveler (10/5): Something special - Absolutely amazing hotel, fabulous location! In the centre, really close into trevi fountain and Spanish steps. The most amazing surprise was the roof terrace, at night it's lit up with complementary wine which is gorgeous with a fantastic view. Breakfast is also on the roof terrace in a stunningly quaint glass room, lovely and intimate.
The rooms are fairly basic, however, very comfortable and clean.
Definitely recommend this hotel!
- jill (4/5): Not as expected!! - The room was very small, no ice, plastic glasses, old towels, nothing like the webpage. The terrace was great, flowers, wine etc, but the rooms were just not up to what we paid. We had high hopes because the location is nice, but a taxi , with another hotel not in the center, would save money.
- patti (8/5): Very Convenient Location! - The Hotel La Fenice is a well maintained hotel in an excellent location. Our room was quite small which was no problem for us as it had everything we could possibly need -- free Wi-Fi, Sky TV, a complimentary mini bar with a few snacks, soft drinks and water. However, the shower in our bathroom would not have suited a larger person. I am not particularly big, but I had to step in and out of the shower sideways. However, our room was spotlessly clean with fresh sheets and towels every day. Do not expect tea/coffee facilities, we rarely find them in our travels in Europe and you don't need them with excellent coffee shops close by. The staff were absolutely lovely, really helpful and friendly. Above all else, the location is excellent. Just a few minutes walk from the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps and about a 15 minute walk from Termini. It is the perfect base for sight seeing. A little note - we had to pay a 12 euro city tax upon checking out. Also, a little tip - around the corner we found a 'Spar' store.
- jacki (10/5): Lovely hotel close to sites and main streets - Just got back from a three night stay and all I can say is what a lovely hotel, the staff were exceptional, the roof terrace beautiful, the room small but very comfortable and very clean. All in all a wonderful stay will definately stay again.
- Jose (10/5): Hotel Centrally Located - Arrived very early (9 am) so room was not ready. However, front desk personnel advised me to leave suitcase and they would take care of it and to go sightseeing. It was great since I was able to change clothes right there in the bathroom located next to elevator in the lobby area. They even invited me to go up to the Terrace to enjoy a cappuccino prior to leaving the grounds. When I came back, my suitcase was in my room and the minibar was stuffed!!!! The mini bar is free!!! The breakfast was very well done and it was beautiful to be able to go up to the terrace and enjoy the view before starting the day! Then at the end of the day, they had a great happy hour from 6 to 10 pm!!! It was great to be able to sit in that terrace and enjoy the view and sip champagne while munching on potato chips. The room was very nice. The bathroom was super clean and very spacious. They even have a bidet which is very common in Europe, but no so much in states. There are lots of room in the closet and it even has a great desk to be able to work on the computer. They have free wifi all over the hotel even in the hallways! I wished I knew the names of the people that helped me, but I only remember Gabrielle. Thank you Gabrielle. He helped me with my television because I did not know how to turn it on.
- Charlotte (10/5): A SUPERB STAY! LOVED LOVED LOVED! - The hotel and their staff were absolutely fantastic. I have nothing to complain about and will be staying there for future visits. It was our first time to Rome and the staff were extremely helpful in giving us advice for the best deals to see all the sights. They recommended places to eat and how best to keep ourselves safe in and around the city.
The hotel was immaculate. The service of the room each day was done to an exceptional standard and the toiletries provided were of a fantastic quality. I was so impressed that I left a tip just for the room service staff. The little extras were what made this hotel. The complimentary mini bar, wine on the terrace in the evenings and the beautiful breakfast, all added to a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Nothing you asked was too much trouble. I have recommended this hotel to several friends and family and will be booking to stay again next year. I would really recommend this hotel for first time visitors because it is within walking distance of all the major sites, so if you are not too familiar with the language, you don't have to have the added worry and expense of having to use taxis and buses etc.
I was genuinely surprised it was a three star hotel because in my opinion you could not get any better!
