- S4453FQloria (10/5): Best Hotel on the Lower East Side - My husband and I have lived on the Lower East Side since the 1990s and know the neighborhood very well. At various times either friends have come to visit and needed or hotel room, or we've needed a hotel room in the neighborhood ourselves, usually when having work done on our apartment. At the end of November 2025, we were unable to use our apartment for a week and wanted to stay in the neighborhood. Although we've walked by it many times, we decided to try the Historic Blue Moon Hotel at 100 Orchard Street. The reasonable room rates drew our attention, but when we looked more closely, we loved everything about it. It's an original Lower East Side tenement building that the owners seemingly spared no expense to renovate and very tastefully reposition as a hotel. The property preserves a high degree of period detail and offers unique aesthetic appeal that provides an authentic Lower East Side experience that other hotels in the neighborhood cannot match. Maybe best of all, it is a family business with owners, management and staff who genuinely care about their guests' experience. If you are looking to experience the Lower East Side in a way that really captures the historic uniqueness of the neighborhood, and is conveniently located near public transportation and within walking distance of other Lower Manhattan neighborhoods (SoHo, Chinatown, Little Italy, the East Village, etc.) this is absolutely the place to stay.

Cain and his cousin gave us all kinds of tips about the area. I was impressed by the family and how each member was caring, patient and woven into the fabric of this hotel. The bed was super comfortable. I love the windows facing Orchard Street that are deep, and in the window seat I sat watching the school children lining up to go into the tenement museum. I look forward to coming back!
- marisah949 (10/5): Wonderful! - Absolutely loved our stay at this boutique hotel. The staff is incredible and really go above and beyond. You can feel the vibrant history of NYC when you stay. The neighborhood is awesome- great shops and restaurants. Also really loved how secure and safe the building was- you have your own code to enter so no keys to fumble with was a plus! Highly recommend and will definitely be back!
- philippM8333OH (10/5): A True Lower East Side Gem with Exceptional Hospitality - My wife and I return to the Historic Blue Moon Hotel on Orchard Street whenever we visit New York City, and it consistently feels like a homecoming. I grew up nearby on Forsyth Street, so the hotel’s authentic Lower East Side character resonates deeply, but the charm is universal—my wife feels equally welcomed. The property’s location is ideal for travelers. It is two blocks from the IND F line, offering direct access to Soho, the East and West Village, and Midtown, with easy connections to other major subway routes. We used it as our jumping-off point for visits to the NYC Aquarium and the Bronx Zoo. Katz’s Deli, Little Italy, and Chinatown are all within walking distance. The Lower East Side has evolved since the 1980s, yet the Blue Moon preserves the historic feel of the neighborhood. The owner, Randy, and manager, David, are exceptionally hospitable and truly elevate the guest experience. Randy also provides tours related to the Tenement Museum directly across the street, adding cultural depth to the stay. The surrounding area is vibrant, safe, and full of excellent dining and cultural attractions, including the International Center of Photography and the Italian American Museum. The Williamsburg Bridge—just five blocks away—offers a scenic walk into Brooklyn. Rooms vary from standard doubles to a luxurious penthouse, each decorated with Lower East Side memorabilia and named for early 20th-century musicians. The boutique character and sense of history make this property unique. For future enhancements, a microwave in the rooms and improved Android TV connectivity would be welcome. Overall, this hotel offers an exceptional blend of location, heritage, and hospitality and remains our preferred choice in NYC.

Slept like a baby. Staff made the stay even better. Very welcoming and friendly. I’ve stayed at a few hotels on the LES and this is a new favorite.
- anecessaryevil (8/5): Quaint but comfortable hotel. - Perhaps the least commercial hotel in the area and the rooms are somewhat larger than average and it's got some character for sure. The air-conditioning worked fine and the small kitchen area was certainly adequate. The problem is that any rooms that face east particularly have terrible noise on any night that the nightclub on Essex is operating. It goes till 4 am and you would want to avoid any night when it is operating which includes Friday and Saturday nights. That's probably the only thing that would stop us coming back again as it's well located and comfortable and quite reasonable in Price. You are staying in a bit of history as well, which is a positive in our view.

The location was great and had everything you need within walking distance. The room was clean and spacious. The only suggestion I have is to maybe add a small microwave to heat leftovers since there are so many great restaurants in the area. Dovid is what really made our stay special. He was at the front desk everyday of our stay and he was the best. He’s very warm and welcoming and had great recommendations no matter what we were looking for. Dovid will forever be part of our family after our time here. As long as Dovid works here this will be our go to hotel.
- caitlinandjeramyc (4/5): We were double charged and the room fan was filthy, staff did nothing about either issue. - We checked in on Friday 11/21 & had two rooms (303 and 503). We paid for the rooms up front when we booked in July 2025. We paid the non-refundable rate and took the discount. When we checked in on 11/21 the desk clerk charged my card a second time. I immediately told him that we had already paid in July when we booked with the non-refundable rate. He looked and confirmed this was the case & “reversed” the charge, saying that it would fall off before posting. The charge posted today, so now I have to go through the work of disputing it with my card. On top of this, room 503 had an absolutely filthy fan. We told the front desk clerk and asked that it be cleaned but no one from housekeeping ever came by to clean the fan during our stay. We mentioned it again at check out to the person checking us out on Sunday, who may have been the owner, but did not introduce himself. This hotel does not seem to be well managed. A filthy fan in a room speaks to poor housekeeping standards and having hotel staff who double charge accounts and then can’t reliably reverse the charge is unacceptable. We were excited about this property because we were in the city to see Ragtime and were excited about the historic elements of this (beautifully converted) property, but this hotel does not live up to its many accolades and, for a space that’s so proud of them, should work harder to maintain those standards.

They were warm and welcoming, and always available with suggestions for restaurants or places to visit. The location was very good, as the Lower East Side has a lot of history and character. As an added bonus, excellent pickles and bagels were a 5-minute walk away. Highly recommended!

- 681kirstenf (10/5): A unique sense of place with quirky charm - We absolutely loved our stay at the Blue Moon. The owners and staff could not have been more friendly, helpful or responsive to our needs and have created a super warm and cheerful environment with quirky character in leafy walkable heart of the LES-noisy on weekend nights but otherwise quite restful. The rooms are clean, beds very comfortable and the elevator not nearly as slow as we were expecting in this historic space. We shared a relatively spacious double queen room with shared balcony and would definitely stay again.

Only reason I did not give it a 5 Star was because there were no drawers for clothes and no microwave, but these are small inconveniences in my opinion. I loved meeting the owners and learning about the history. I would recommend to anyone visiting NyC who is looking to stay in LES.

- Susanna (6/5): - Know that they are 100% serious about no changes. We were unable to take our trip because my husband’s knee blew out the day before our trip. I called the hotel and they absolutely refused to let us reschedule for a later date. They first made us call Hotels.com to call the property, so I also had to spend the time on that. My bad because I should have gotten insurance, but I was really disappointed they wouldn’t let us reschedule even with a doctor’s note.

The LES location-Orchard Street is a favorite-with proximity to the Essex/Delancey station makes navigating Manhattan easy. The room (King with shared balcony) was spacious and comfortable with all necessities. The team, especially Dovid and Braham,was so full of hospitality. It was a special treat to hear the story of the Blue Moon from the talented and interesting Mr. Settembrini. The stay was like an immersive experience!

- ileanadavid (8/5): Comfy hotel downtown with historic feel - Nice smaller hotel with historic feel located downtown Manhattan in a lively area and close to subway, bus and eatery shops. The room was spacious with all needed furniture and facilities, housekeeping upon request whenever needed, clean, very good Wi-Fi, comfy huge beds. The balcony was a selling point for us, nice to chill in the evening. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful whenever we had a request. The only thing we felt missing were the sockets next to bed, but other available so manageable. We didn’t experience noise as other reviews mentioned, even we stayed over weekend. We enjoyed our stay.

- AllysonHP (8/5): 1st time at the Blue Moon! - The only reason I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars is because Dovid, or someone just like him, couldn’t be at the front desk during our entire stay. Things fell off a bit when he wasn’t there. He was SO welcoming and helpful that I guess we got spoiled and were disappointed when a less communicative person took over at the front desk for a period of time. The hotel is so charming and full of character with a beautiful history, the neighborhood is equally as charming, diverse and absolutely lovely! The view from our balcony was second to none. We look forward to returning to the Blue Moon and hope Dovid will be there for us again next time. He’s an absolute TREASURE

Caring and friendly staff, very large and comfortable rooms by NYC standards makes you feel truly immersed in NYC life. The rooms are not exactly as described, with very limited spaces and extra sleeping spaces sometimes replaced by reclining armchairs. Poor cleaning and rooms not ready on our arrival. Reception that presents very young and inexperienced guys: back in the evening we found one on an armchair , barefoot who did not even get up to answer: it was like on the sofa at home minding his own business. In summary..... we thought much better....

Their warmth makes you feel like a guest of honor in a place that celebrates the city’s past while welcoming you into its present. I encourage you look this place up on Instagram! You will know what I mean... This place is amazing; highly recommend.
- C3621OFangief (4/5): Poor Customer Service, Large Room - I did a lot of research before booking the Blue Moon Hotel. I read so many reviews about how charming this hotel was, and how warm the family who staffed the hotel and restaurant were. I specifically chose this property because of its history that I wanted to share with my teenagers who were seeing NYC for the first time, and thought it would be a completely unique and educational (and fun) experience. Unfortunately we experienced none of this. When we checked in, we were greeted as though it was a pain to bother the staff. When we got to our room my kids looked and me and said "Mom, do they even want us to stay here?" We stayed for three nights, and the restaurant was never open for one of them so we never got to try any of the food others raved about. Most of the time when we passed the person at the front desk he barely looked up from his phone. I cannot tell you one thing about the property's history, but I am very glad that we did an excellent tour at the Tenement Museum across the street so I could share this with my family. I requested no housekeeping but did ask for fresh towels. It took three times asking to get them. The room itself was fine. It was large, which we appreciated, and although we were plainly told upon check-in that we would have absolutely no view, we did enjoy the balcony. Just keep in mind that unless you're high up, you will see none of the city views advertised so much on the website and on the hotel's social media channel. The one aspect of the room that I did have a real issue with was the mold around the bathtub. Again, I booked this property because I knew a soak in the tub would be appreciated after long days of walking. But the mold around the perimeter of the tub and faucet was just gross, and we basically all just closed our eyes while we were showering and got in and out as quickly as possible. This is an easy fix - address it, please, for future guests. We had a nice visit to NYC, but I can't say I would ever recommend this property to anyone. I would choose another hotel in the neighborhood because it's a great part of town, and so culturally rich. Maybe it would have been a different experience with different staff, but I'll never know. I left feeling like I was really duped by the marketing for the hotel compared to what we experienced, and it cost me dearly in both time and money.
- Traci (4/5): - Interesting history but we paid for the suite and there is a club right outside that played loud music until 3 am. There was only one person working at the hotel and when we got there a little early we already had a text that the room was ready and code to enter, but were told we had to pay $75 more if we wanted to go to the room early. If the one staff member left the front desk there was nobody else around to help and no security at all. Already mentioned all of this when asked to leave a review and was told that they don't have a sound meter to document the noise of the club. There is no way that would not be obvious.
- danabP7131AU (10/5): Very Comfortable Historic Hotel with Amazing Staff - We were pleasantly surprised by this charming boutique hotel. The owner, Randy, was there when we checked in and he shared the history of the hotel and the renovation process ongoing 20+ years. The rooms have been modernized but great measures were taken to preserve the original artificats and decorative detail. We stayed in a Superior King with Shared Balcony and the room was very clean and spacious with a well stocked kitchenette including a stove top and frig. The photos you see on the website are 100% accurate. The bed and linens were very comfortable and we had a nice sized bathroom and closet (a plus in NY!). Our room was very quiet so we slept very well. We had the pleasure of having Dovid working reception a few of the days were were there. Dovid was incredibly kind and helpful and we enjoyed our conversations with him regarding the history of the neighborhood, as well the delicious pastries from the cafe. A true hidden gem full of history, but not lacking modern comforts. We will be back.

- 836tamars (10/5): LES Gem! - This historic hotel is a gem of the LES! The prices are surprisingly reasonable given that they are in such an iconic area of the city. While you may be staying in one of the last remaining tenement buildings, the rooms do not feel like it at all! Very spacious and updated (including the bathrooms!) If you get a room on the higher floors with a balcony, you will have quite a view of the city. Don't leave without trying the delicious treats from the bakery, everything is made in house! This hotel has a unique charm that is quintessential New York City!

Our queen/queen room was clean, spacious and very comfortable. The kitchenette with little fridge and Keurig was an added bonus. Very friendly and helpful staff at the front desk. They were knowledgeable and always available. It's a hidden gem in a very vibrant and interesting area of the city. The Tenement Museum across the street has really good tours!

The staff was so kind and attended to my every need. I stayed in room 801. I Highly recommend this room. With its cathedral ceilings and amazing outside patio. The views from the numerous windows captured The City the best I’ve seen. The green design accents were truly calming. Perfect place to recharge yourself after all the awesome stimulation of the Lower East Side . There’s a coffee shop cafe and restaurant in the lobby. The desserts and food are made with care and quality ingredients. Don’t miss Randys marinara sauce, it was so good I took a quart of it to go! He’s the artist that restored the beautiful building AND is the master chef of the restaurant. So much talent and passion about everything he does. I could go on but instead I suggest you go and have the experience for yourself. It will not disappoint.

This hotel is tastefully restored retaining original details with the owner-created-art everywhere and an incredibly friendly staff. The owner greeted us and gave us a detailed rundown of the restoration which he designed. From stairwells to rooms to lobby and dining room the place is unique with a classic yet modern comfort feel. The lobby had coffee and pastries created by the proprietors wife. Locals seemed to go there just for the pastries and coffee...and vibes I'm sure. We booked a room with a balcony off the back and the city views and NYC vibes were unmatched. The location couldn't be more perfect in the heart of the Bowery with cocktails and food every other doorway. He not only served us a tea but also an amazing almond and orange cookie along with many stories about the history of the building area and of NY. "We were incredibly excited to stay at the Blue Moon Hotel on Orchard Street for my birthday weekend, having admired its history and location for years. However, our experience was severely disappointing. We initially booked through a third party but had to contact the hotel directly to upgrade to a junior suite with a king bed and a twin bed for our daughter. The hotel quoted us an extra $XXXper night. Upon arrival, we discovered that the "twin bed" was actually a chair that was supposed to convert into a bed. Not only was it not set up, but there was no bedding provided. As our daughter ended up not staying with us, we requested to be moved back to the original room we booked. The weekend staff was unhelpful and referred us to the manager, who was unavailable until Sunday at 11 am. When we finally spoke with the manager, they were incredibly rude and refused to refund the $60 upgrade fee or offer any compromise. Beyond this, the accommodations themselves were underwhelming. We were constantly disturbed by the sound of doves cooing outside the window, and the noise from the street traffic was significant. Moreover, it took an excruciatingly long time to heat the water for a shower. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend staying at the Blue Moon Hotel. The lack of customer service, coupled with the subpar accommodations, made our stay significantly less enjoyable than we had anticipated."

A guy finally appeared and mumbled about the check in. We left our bags because it was before check in. We returned at 11:00 pm and the guy who showed up ALSO couldn’t have cared less we were there. The place was desolate - we never saw any other guests. The cases in the windows held a sad assortment of cookies that looked like they’d seen their better days.

I’m not kidding. The hotel has a large step and if you’re handicapped they will offer to lift you up, but it’s not exactly handicap accessible. I reasonably contended that this wasn’t the place for my 71 year old crippled mom who has cancer, yet couldn’t get my money back. Eventually Expedia would only get half of my money back as I booked 2 rooms. Paid for a room, never stayed. Never give these people your money.

- Sara (6/5): Last minute 3 day stay- great views on balcony - I had rented the 1 bedroom apartment 701 for 3 nights last minute stay because my other accommodations at The Muse fell through due to city scaffolding and not being able to use the balcony room, they let me know the night before, so I had to scramble and many hotels were already full. When I arrived the Blue Moon hotel seemed closed, the street in front was closed, the Uber had to go down anyway because of all my luggage (I had traveled by train on a10 day Boston trip prior) so I was ready to check in! Turns out it was Passover holiday and the hotel was run on a skeleton crew.Ok. understandable,no glass of wine to welcome us like the website suggested? That's ok. The elevator is slow but efficient and the room is 420 friendly. Everything feels safe, they're nice and friendly, but no housekeeping or ice machine. No breakfast as advertised either, the cafe downstairs looks like a set of a cafe but again it's a holiday week. There's Dudley's cafe on the corner and it's wonderful food. They stay has great views of the Chrysler Building and the empire State Building. There's a comfortable bed. The tub had hairs in it...Eww. I thinkI loved the coffee machine and the mini fridge the most! It's a nice thing to wake up to a hot coffee and a view of the city. The historic Blue Moon has a fresh coat of paint and one can notice little updates and pride in ownership from the big screen TV to providing updated electrical outlets. There's a touch of the classic NYC feel to the place too!

The room was spacious and had a nice balcony but for the money I think we could have done better. Staff was not outright snarky, but not anxious to please either. You can do better in NYC.
