Guest Reviews
- 284thear (2/5): Worst hotel experience of my life. stay far away! - I stayed at Grand Colony Hotel Rome for 10 days, and it was honestly the worst experience of my life. The room was dirty, the furniture was old, broken, and looked nothing like the photos online. Every single day there were bugs and insects on the walls and even in the shower.
When we complained about a terrible smell in the room, the staff simply told us to “open the window” — which we had already done. The entire place, including the reception area and elevator, had such a strong, disgusting odor that it was hard to even stay in the room or sleep properly.
Upon arrival, we also had to pay 7 euros per night in extra charges plus a 50 euro deposit. They are very sneaky and will find any excuse to keep your deposit. We accidentally got a small makeup stain on one towel, and they immediately took the entire deposit without discussion. I have stayed in many hotels before, but I’ve never experienced anything like this.
When we tried to talk to the receptionist about it, she was extremely rude and unhelpful. She refused to take responsibility or even try to resolve the issue. We ended up calling the police, and suddenly she started acting innocent and “victimized” herself. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much the police could do since we were leaving that same evening — but if we had stayed longer, we would have filed a formal complaint because this hotel clearly violates basic hospitality standards.
I strongly advise everyone to avoid this hotel at all costs. It’s dirty, dishonest, and completely unprofessional. This place should honestly be shut down.
- follas (2/5): A HORROR MOVIE - THIS was by far the worst hotel experience of my life. The conditions were unhygienic, unsafe, and completely misrepresented.
• Bedbugs were everywhere, and we found new ones every day.
• Furniture and beds were old, broken, stained, and unfit for use.
• The sink barely worked, and soap was never replenished.
• Air conditioning, advertised as part of the room, was unavailable.
• The fitness room, also advertised, was closed.
• The room smelled terrible, and cleaning staff only sprayed a generic cleaner that did nothing.
• The hotel had a dog and a cat, never disclosed. The dog barked constantly, and the lobby reeked of animals. LIKE WHO HAS A DOG ?? It’s was traumatizing for us guest and probably for the animals as well to stay there.
We even contacted local police, who strongly recommended filing a formal complaint due to the severity of the conditions, which could have led to an investigation or closure of the hotel.
SO I URGE YOU TO CONTACT THE POLICE OR FILE A COMPLAINT BECAUSE THEY WILL SHUT DOWN THIS NIGHTMAGE.
This hotel is a health and safety nightmare. I cannot stress enough: do not stay here. The facilities, hygiene, and service are far below any reasonable standard, and it is completely unacceptable.
I REPEAT DO NOT STAY THERE IT WAS LIKE A HORROR MOVIE!!!! FOR YOUR OWN SAKE AND SAFETY DONT GO THERE. I AM TRAUMATIZED FOR LIFE!! PLEASE DONT GO THERE
- Thanya (8/5): - The hotel is beautiful but in need of some maintenance. The bathroom had some frequent issues with foul odors coming through the drain.
- Trevor (6/5): - My only qualms regarding the location are two, and they deal only with the fee structure and the apathy of management.
There is a 50€ deposit that must be paid in cash for potential damage to the room and incurred fees. These “incurred fees” include a 10€ per hour fee for every hour past the 10:00 a.m. checkout for a guests stay. However, Colony Hotel sends a private message to the guest upon reservation and payment via Expedia that states clearly the checkout time is 11:00am.
When I arrived at 1:00am from a days travel, I found myself at the desk reading a policy sheet that states a different check out time, 10€. I also found myself needing to provide a 50€ deposit for deposit, which required me to walk down the street to withdraw cash and incur a 5€ transaction fee from the ATM.
I spent about 20 minutes requesting a check out time of 11:00am without an additional cost of 10€. The attendant informed me it’s not possible, management is aware that they have their own message sent through Expedia that contradicts their current policies. Additionally, I was told the attendant would have to pay the 10€ personally if he was to permit a guest an exception.
In the morning I attempted to speak to the manager about this discrepancy at my check out of 11:00am. The manager was apathetic and unsympathetic to my request. Overall the customer service was poor.
I think it is reasonable given the contradictory information to have granted an exception.
- aaroncO2566YB (2/5): DO NOT BOOK! Scam hotel!!! - DO NOT USE THIS HOTEL!
They take a €50 deposit from you when you check in and will find any excuse to not give you it back.
On our last night we got back to the room around 10pm and decided to turn the tv on and found it was broken (had multiple lines down the screen). When checking out they said we had damaged the tv so refused to give us it back. Bearing in mind the tv is about 15 inches and is located right in the upper corner of the room so impossible to have been accidentally damaged! I’m presuming they do this with a lot of guests as a way to scam your €50
- anthonycY3109LI (2/5): Very very poor accommodation and service - I recently stayed at the Grand Colony Hotel in Rome, booked through LoveHolidays, and unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing.
We booked as a couple but were placed in a twin room, which already set the wrong tone. The condition of the room and facilities was far below what is shown in the official photos and online listings.
Room & Bathroom:
Cracked walls, peeling paint, scuffed and dirty surfaces.
Broken and damaged lampshades, marked furniture, and rough filler work.
Bathroom was unhygienic – chipped toilet, mold and grime around the shower tray and tiles, rust around the sink plug, and a corroded shower head.
The shower drain was blocked and the light broken on arrival (eventually fixed, but only as a minimal gesture).
Public Areas:
The lift was covered from floor to ceiling in scratches and graffiti, creating a neglected and unsafe impression.
Management Response:
When I complained, the manager/owner told me:
“What do you expect from a 3-star hotel?”
Asked how much I had paid, implying I was “getting what I paid for.”
Admitted she couldn’t move us because “all the rooms are like this.”
This was incredibly dismissive and unprofessional. Instead of addressing the problems, management essentially admitted that the whole hotel is substandard.
Overall:
The photos online show bright, modern double rooms and clean bathrooms, but the reality was dirty, run down, and not as advertised. A couple of small fixes (a light and a drain) did nothing to improve the overall poor standard.
I would not recommend this hotel. It does not reflect what is advertised, and the management’s attitude towards complaints makes it clear they have no intention of improving.
Personale arrogante e maleducato.
Rapporto qualità prezzo SFAVOREVOLE!!!
DA EVITARE
- shinnyw2025 (2/5): DISGUSTING ABUSIVE AGGRESSIVE STAFF - Absolutely awful experience. Came in from an evening out to find our sink had come off the wall and smashed on the floor. We reporting this the moment we got back but was told ‘it’s ok we will sort in the morning’. We were dragged out of bed and marched down to reception where our passports were confiscated until we paid the €300 they were demanding for the sink. We were screamed at but the woman on reception, called disgusting, vile English. My partner was called a disgusting animal because she had come on her menstrual cycle in the night and had to the slightest bit on the bed sheet. We ended up having to pay €300 euros for something that we didn’t do and which also made us miss our transfer, this cost us another £62 then to get to the airport. We’ve never been spoken to like this anywhere we have stayed, the woman was absolutely vile. We called the police but they were no help at all, language was a big barrier in this situation. The aggressive woman behind the front desk quickly calmed down and started to play the innocent victim once the police arrived. Avoid this place at all costs it is literally what I’ve seen on another review FAWLTY TOWERS.
- kirstyo386 (2/5): Faulty towers - a shambles to say the least - We recently stayed inThe Horel Colony , I have to say as you walk in the door the sweet / sickly smell hits you , you are met with the very unfriendly reception staff ( I do not think I spoke to anyone in reception who was friendly ) . You are asked to pay a 50 euro deposit …. This will not be given back to you , as they seem to find excuses so they can keep it . When trying to sort this issue , was told it was the managers decision , yet the manager was never available to discuss . The room was clean and basic . The shower was a disaster, The first night there it flooded whilst one of us was showering / uses towel to clean it , accused of ruining towels … hence 50.00 of deposit kept by hotel . All the bathroom fixtures were in very bad condition , toilet seat half off Moat of the plug sockets in bedroom did not work . I would definitely not return. Over all this hotel was awful / staff awful … Do not book …
If you do stay … there is a great bus service into the city .. that was the only positive .
- O1520EMhollyc (10/5): AMAZING TBH - Honestly, after reading the reviews, I was quite worried, but the staff were really helpful as we had a broken window handle but they moved and upgraded our room no problem.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room was very clean and the staff made check in and check out speedy and stress free. I liked that the reception was 24/7. Only downfall was that the restaurant didnt serve food in the evenings so when we arrived we had to find alternative food places but the staff were helpful in recommending some good food places.
- Lisa (10/5): - The staff is very kind and attentive. Great cappuccino every morning!
- Daniella (2/5): - shower didn’t work and they refused to change our room. the place also only accepts cash in 2025!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Works for the price - Check in process was smoothe, the rooms are clean but have scuff marks. The bathrooms were my main concern as the shower had some mold and the shower head was broken and spraying all over.
- Marie-Christine (8/5): Joli - + Personnel sympa, restaurant bon, decoration 1900. Bel endroit.
- pas de clim. Trop chaud.
No tengo queja alguna..
- Saif (6/5): - Mixed Experience - Some Room for Improvement
We chose this accommodation based on the photos, but unfortunately, the room we received on the first day did not match our expectations. The cleanliness, especially in the bathroom, was not up to standard, and the air conditioning did not work well.
However, we appreciate that the staff promptly addressed our concerns by moving us to a better room, which was an improvement, though still not quite as expected.
On a positive note, the workers were very friendly and helpful, doing their best to make our stay more comfortable.
One thing to keep in mind is the location-it's quite far from the city center, so traveling there by bus takes at least an hour and a half.
- Eleonora (4/5): - "Hotel" 3 stelle SI DEFINISCONO. Esperienza pessima. SCONSIGLIATO.
Pulizia pessima, cortesia pari a zero.
- Extraordinary812136 (2/5): Please do not stay here. - Please please please book something else. This place is awful. We booked a sports package and this hotel was included (we didn’t look at reviews when booking unfortunately) the smell when you walk in the door is utterly disgusting. I couldn’t even breathe, I held my breath walking from the lift to the outside, it was awful. The place is filthy, so dated, not cared for. We stayed one night and found somewhere else to stay for the remaining nights. Please please do not book.
- Michael (6/5): - Property is old and smells of garbage in the lobby. Shower flooded and property looks like a haunted house from a distance.
- Daniela (8/5): - Buone accoglienza e pulizia.
- F2162SXdebbiec (8/5): Colony hotel experience. - Spent a week here and we have no complaints! Rooms cleaned daily.
Staff were extremely helpful and pleasant!
We ate in the restaurant every night, the food was delicious, and very reasonably priced.
For the £ we paid, we cannot fault neither the staff or accommodation.
Going back 2026!
- Michael (8/5): - The staff where really good hotel was in a quiet area easy transport to centre of Rome 👍
- emiliarW4276OZ (10/5): Very pleasant stay! - Before our stay at the Colony, my friend and I were very nervous due to the plethora of bad reviews about the staff, the smell and the condition of the rooms. Our fears were unfounded- the staff were beyond lovely and accommodating. There was no smell in the lobby and the dog behind the reception was very well behaved. The rooms were in good condition and cleaned daily. It definitely isn't the most luxurious hotel but for the price and for it being a 3 star hotel, I have no complaints. The location of the hotel is quite far from the centre but we found it quite easy to use the public transport- it took about 50 minutes on the bus to get into the centre, which was quite tiring at times. Near the Colony Hotel, I would recommend Gradito al Fleming to eat as the food was lovely.
- darrenfA2023DM (10/5): The stay was Pleasant - After reading all the reviews, I was a bit worried about staying here—but to my surprise, the hotel staff were really kind and friendly. Fresh towels were provided every day, and the room was cleaned daily.
While the hotel is a bit outdated, it's still in good condition. The room I had was nice, the bathroom was clean, and the sheets were fresh.
The only downside was that you had to leave your key at reception when leaving the hotel. There's a safe inside the cupboard for valuables, which was helpful. Also, there were no "Do Not Disturb" tags, so housekeeping came in every day whether you requested it or not.
Overall, it's a good hotel.
- Grace (4/5): - Different reality to what I saw on images advertised to me on skyscanner and on Expedia at time of booking
- Claudio (10/5): - 👍
- S5890WFclairem (2/5): Avoid, avoid, avoid - Avoid at all costs
It was smelly, dirty, worn out, dark and dingy
Breakfast was lousy too, didn’t help there were a load of Italian footballers using the breakfast area at the same time.
Can’t see why anyone would stay here
Staff not too helpful or welcoming tbh
Make sure you have cash to pay the tax or you get sent out to find some
Overall dreadful
- Andrea (10/5): - Great value, helpful staff and good breakfast buffet. Transportation into Rome makes this a good choice.
- Sarah_Argiro (2/5): BED BUGS!! BAD SMELLS HEALTH HAZARD!! - The hotel is plagued with BED BUGS!!!
We had to move rooms three times before we finally left! It was disgustingly dirty, with broken toilets and broken fridges and no air conditioning.
The bed bugs were awful and appeared in swarms once the light was off, we complained and asked for our cash deposit back but was told they couldn’t refine at the desk and we had to email which we have never heard back from.
We did inform the city though of this health hazard and we will also been informing media outlets once home so that everyone is aware of this disgusting place that needs shutting down.
- X6240JRanab (2/5): Horrible place to stay - I would not recommend this hotel. The room has bare minimum, no kettle to make coffee or tea and soap is not always provided. We were told to get coffee in the breakfast room as the bar was closed in the morning. There’s a horrible nauseating smell in the reception area, The room did not have a luggage holder so I have to leave my suitcases on the floor for the 8 days I was there. Closet had 2 & 1/2 hangers in the room for my clothes. Had to ask for Soap two days in a row, as it was not left in the room. The bed was stained along the edge.
When my friend reported many damaged areas in her room, she was accused of causing the damage, told she would have to pay for the damages, and was met with angry hostility by the reception and owner on the phone. Fortunately, she took many photos as the room was disgusting.
All in all it was a very uncomfortable stay, not relaxing at all, not worth the value they charge.
- kayleighc550 (8/5): Great experience - I’m confused by all these negative reviews to be honest ! Yes the hotel is slightly dated but it is only a 3 star , you’ve not booked the Hilton 🤣. That being said for a 3 star it is really good , the two ladies on reception were so lovely and helpful and ruby the dog too. The waiter in the restaurant/bar was a lovely young gentleman and always happy to help. For a cheap hotel we had a good stay and comfortable nights sleep. Buses are cheap and easy to get where you would like to go.
- rachelo471 (2/5): Smelly reception, rude staff - Unfortunately the reviews are true. The hotel reception stinks, I would say it’s on par with gone off fruit left in a fridge far too long. The staff are rude, grinning replies to basic questions, they speak prefect English when demanding extra money for “city charges” but if there’s an issue nobody understands you.
The hotel room is basic, it has a bed and a small tv, it’s dated but it’s only a place to sleep. The hotel is too far away from all the places you’ll be planning on visiting and taxis are required making it expensive.
The bathroom is basic and again requires updating, there isn’t a bath and the shower is small. I wouldn’t recommend staying here and won’t be back.
- Tourist05039098530 (2/5): AVOID AT ALL COSTS. - Upon our arrival at the hotel, the receptionist informed us that we could not check in until we withdrew cash to immediately pay the city tax. After a long day of travel and a flight, we were forced to leave our luggage behind and walk 15 minutes to a nearby ATM. To make matters worse, the hotel had an unpleasant odor, reminiscent of garbage and animal food.
Once we finally accessed our room—after struggling with a door that appeared to be jammed—we discovered that the lights were not functioning, and the air conditioning was out of service. The only source of light was a small lamp in the corner of the room, providing little illumination. Due to the rude staff and the pervasive stench, we decided to leave and dine elsewhere.
When we returned in the evening, we found the shower was unusable; it flooded the bathroom, and the showerhead was coated with limescale. As we tried to close the curtains, mould fell onto the floor, and the wall behind them was covered in it. The bed consisted of a double mattress with only one thin pillow each. When we requested additional pillows, the staff member made a scene and refused to accommodate us.
I raised concerns about the state of the room, the non-functional shower and lights, the mould, and the overall discomfort. I was told that, as it was a Sunday, nothing could be done. When I inquired about potential compensation, I was met with laughter and a dismissive attitude, leaving me feeling humiliated.
The next morning, we went to the breakfast area, which came at an extra cost, only to find a plate of cold, fried eggs and open boxes of cereal. There were no other options available, and we had to ask where the milk, bowls, and cutlery were. The waiter’s watchful gaze made us feel uncomfortable, and as a result, we chose not to eat there again, losing money in the process.
Unfortunately, multiple concerns raised during my visit were not addressed appropriately, which led to significant distress and frustration.
On several occasions, I approached the staff regarding issues with my room, and I was met with rudeness and a lack of professionalism. This was particularly troubling as I suffer from anxiety, and the confrontational manner of the staff only heightened my distress. On one instance, I was promised that the shower would be fixed the following morning at 8 a.m., but when I returned, no action had been taken. Furthermore, when I spoke to another staff member, I was informed that the handyman was unavailable for the week, leaving me with no solution. I was even advised to seek alternative locations for a shower, which I found both unreasonable and dismissive of my concerns.
This situation caused me considerable anxiety and prevented me from enjoying my time in Rome, as I had to repeatedly address issues with your staff without receiving any adequate resolution. Instead of feeling at ease and able to relax, I found myself worrying about the state of my room and the lack of communication.
Overall, I am deeply disappointed by this experience, which has significantly impacted our trip to Rome.
- paddyb381 (2/5): Avoid - What a dumb nothing close in the middle of nowhere would not stay again I would not like to be there a week the room was dark gloomy . Don’t understand why they don’t put a bit of money into the hotel avoid i was getting taxis in and out of Rome so cost me in the long run
- maddeb (2/5): Kip of a Hotel - We arrived in this hotel Monday 3rd October 2025 & left Thursday 06th. When we arrived into the hotel, the first thing that hit us both was the moldy, musky & damp smell. Because we had arrived too early to check in (10.30 am approximately), we couldn't check in to our room. We left our luggage in the storage room which was way too narrow, (I would hate to see it during the summer time). We couldn't have anything to eat in the restaurant until 12.00. So we asked the receptionist where can we go for food & how do we get to the city center. She told us to go from the hotel & turn left.
When we arrived to our room later that evening, I was actually in a rage because of the state of our room. I have a medical device that needs to be plugged into a socket every night. The 1 socket beside my bed was broken & extremely dangerous to use. There were 2 clothes hangers in the filthy wardrobe which we could only hang our coats up. The bathroom was totally disgusting altogether. The shower had a filthy shower curtain in the middle, the rest was covered by a plastic screen which was also filthy, the tap in the shower was the same, as was the main sink. The toilet seat had a huge crack & the toilet brush was also absolutely disgusting. I also had to try to charge my phone in the plug for razors in the bathroom, from there I contacted Love Holidays to take us out of this room or hotel immediately. I went down to the receptionist who was on duty & showed her everything. She had tried to fob me off with a load of rubbish about it needing an update. I told her we want a change of room immediately. She contacted her manager who apparently gave permission for the move. We were transferred to a room with a balcony, it looked slightly better, there was a plug beside my bed at least in which I really needed. But the whole place in general needs to be stripped back to the brick, re plastered, rewired. re plumbed, re painted & certainly brought up to European standards of a 3 star hotel.
We have spoken to a number of guests, Irish, English & Welsh who all have said the same things as us. It is the worst hotel in the world that I have stayed in.
I certainly would never recommend this hotel to anybody.
I will add photos later

- delia (10/5): - Ottima struttura,un po' datata. Riscaldamento insufficiente
- Joshua Antony (8/5): - Overall the rooms were really nice, the balcony had an amazing view, the beds were very comfortable and the staff were very welcoming and polite. The only teeny thing would be that the ac was not working properly. Would love to stay again!
- pietro (6/5): - Buon rapporto qualità prezzo
- Carletto (4/5): -

- M38avis (2/5): BATES MOTEL - STAY AWAY, ive stayed in better bnb's, unfortunately dirty, old and worn with staff that couldn't care less about your stay(exception of one breakfast chap called hassan) . Essentially it was a birthday stay i will always remember for all the wrong reasons.
- Rowel (8/5): - No comment
- Samuel (8/5): - Ottima struttura
- Marti (10/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful neighborhood
- Adrián (10/5): - Buen servicio, flexibles y abiertos a las necesidades.
- Giusy (2/5): - Per carità, hotel molto sporco e puzzolente e personale scorbutico. Non lo consiglio
- Graham (8/5): Recommended - good value if quirky. - Let’s get the slight negatives out of the way first. 1) It’s a LONG way from the city and is over an hour on public transport. (2) the decor is slightly tired (3) The televisions can be on a little loud in the downstairs lounges. Other than that - ITS WONDERFUL! We enjoyed our stay, staff were friendly, it was reasonably priced and value for money. I have seen the negative reviews - each to their own I suppose but there was little I saw to justify the criticism in them. So for me I’d definitely RECOMMEND the Colony Hotel given the parameters above.
- Noel (8/5): - Travelling to and from hotel is a bit ackward as either you take a bus which takes an hour to go more centrally or otherwise a train but with a very bad schedule (every 1or 2 hours).
Etablissement a éviter absolument
- peter (8/5): - Nice comfortable hotel with good amenities. Only fault was Airconditioning really didn’t have any effect and night was very hot in room
Ci siamo trovati molto bene!
- Massimo (8/5): - molto bene più volte
