- Iloveredwine1 (8/5): Prime location - Shanghai was our final stop after visiting four cities in China, and we were so pleased when we finally encountered reception staff who spoke English. It’s a good hotel for its value and has an excellent location. The neighborhood is cozy, with nice malls, charming cafes, and lively bars. The breakfast was decent, although there weren’t many options, it was fairly satisfactory. It would be wonderful if they upgraded the coffee machine, as the current one is quite old. One suggestion I have is for the staff to be a bit more friendly and welcoming. For instance, it would be nice if they made more eye contact and greeted guests with a smile instead of just looking at their phones at the front desk while guests are passing through the lobby.

- P9007PNsandeepa (10/5): A perfect hotel for foreigners in Shanghai. - I have stayed in howard johnson huaihai many many times in last few years - and I keep coming back to this hotel everytime I am in Shanghai. Apart from 5 star comforts and fantastic location, perhaps the best part of this hotel is their extremely well trained and courteous staff. Specially, Ms. Shirley Liu, Front Desk Manager is highly professional in her approach and we were really impressed by her patience & conversation skills - and the way she explained and helped us everytime we had any questions about travel in shanghai. Overall a very comfortable and warm attitude.

For the money this is an average hotel priced for business travellers. Nothing luxury here but as I said before the location is ideal.
- frequentflyer68 (4/5): Do not stay here - The best to be said of this hotel is that it is very Central to Shanghai and within walking distance to the pedesterian mall and the Bund. Customer Service is poor and the food is dreadful. Cigarette smoke pervades the entire hotel.

- wenchaoz933 (8/5): Beautiful resort to stay. - This hotel situates at the center of Shanghai - the famous Middle Huai Hai Road. It is so convenient to everywhere by the public transport, for instance 3 subway lines are nearby within 200 - 300 m, not to mention many buses are also available on Huai Hai Road. Restaurants offer good service and food are also in a few hundred meters walking distance. The location of Howard Johnson is great, we stayed there for two weeks, and we love it!

- gisjac (8/5): Very Shocked with Howard Johnson Hotel - Considering Howard Johnson is an Old hotel, this one was beautiful, understand that dignitaries stay here. Very comfortable rooms, Be prepared to give up your Passport, they make copies and give it back 2 days later. Mini Downtown close by, not much restaurants, But had a nice stay. would recommend
- lexter266 (8/5): Great location, beautifully renovated - This is a beautiful hotel right in the heart of Shanghai. Recently renovated, the hotel looks beautiful from hallway to guest rooms. Executive floor is well done, with open view to the city. Couple of problems: language barrier and food. Not all staff can communicate in English, asking for anything can take time, be patient. Food at buffet breakfast are cold, bland, less choices, and boring! I stayed at the hotel for 5 nights, food menu was all the same!

- Markus (8/5): Tolles Hotel in zentraler Lage - Gute Lage (div. Bars und Restaurants sowie die U-Bahn sind fußläufig zu erreichen), ausreichende Zimmergröße mit vielen Staumöglichkeiten, sauber, freundlicher Service, bequeme Betten. Effektive Klimatisierung. Die Zimmer könnten allerdings mal renoviert werden (Teppiche teils fleckig, Möbel angeschlagen, Fugen im Bad etc.). Das WLAN funktionierte erst ab dem 2. Tag unseres Aufenthalts und war auch teilweise instabil und langsam. Aber sonst rundrum alles klasse.

At the moment it is a bit noisy due to refurbishment, hoping that is a start to a beter revamp... But... There is a nice new corner at the back, called La Galerie...!! Nice niche place with a mixture of comtemporain art, selected wines and cool music. All of that making a nice place to be and to relax. The manager, Mr Lionel is very welcoming and knowledgeable about wine, always ready to give advise considering your taste and budget. Simple tasty food is also availble to accompany the wine, pending on your appetite... In a nutshell, La Galerie is a nice place to be and relax after a long day work and worth the visit... A+
- LLG7806 (10/5): A new kept secret addition to Howard Johnson HuaiHai - Staying at Howard Johnson HuaiHai on a regular basis due its central location, convenient for both business and access to Shanghai vibrant food scene, I recently came across to a new and somewhat kept secret addition of the Howard Johnson HuaiHai lobby with a small and cosy Wine bar called La Galerie. They cater art, furniture, food & wine and music under one roof. Their wine selection is quit eclectic revolving around French and around the world cool climate. Worth to check out!

- Keith (6/5): Good location, early wake up. - Location is great. Lots of eating and shopping options in neighborhood. Room could use an update. Air conditioning not on yet so we had to sleep with window open. Construction started on building across the street at 5:00 AM evert morning, so it was an early wake up for us. We were scheduled to return a few days later, but cancelled and selected a different hotel.
- Simon (4/5): - Service is just TERRIBLE! The people in reception speak absolutely NO ENGLISH. The most simple things they cannot understand, which makes everything impossible. They keep making mistakes, they charge the wrong amounts, and are just unacceptable. It is cheap, but it is cheap for a good reason. Many better alternatives in the area.
- adeandyo (6/5): Distinctly Average - Stayed 4 nights (I stayed here last year too). Location - great! Room - cold. Opposite a building site that starts at 5.30am and above the hotel restaurant that is closed for a refurb and where the workmen start banging and drilling at 7am. I couldn't be bothered packing everything up to change rooms but the point is that such rooms should not be given to guests until the internal refurb has been completed. The room was also cold with no way to warm it up. Breakfast- relocated to a poky room on the 3rd floor during refurb of the main restaurant. Limited choice, bland and unappealing so I went to Spread the Bagel around the corner every morning! WiFi - no problems but it did take me 1 hour and a discussion with check-in to get it! Room safe - not working when I checked in. It took a few hours for it to be fixed - the repairman was very nice and said he would need to get new Duracell batteries for it! Why doesn't the hotel just do weekly checks and save guests a lot of unnecessary hassle? Housekeeping staff - lovely ladies. Overall, I can just about put up with this hotel for a few nights while on business but there is absolutely no way I would stay here if I were on holiday and paying out of my own pocket!

Staff is very helpful and friendly and always arrange our car to go out and booked restaurant for us. Will go back to stay. The only comment is their aircon which was not allowed to adjust, so the temperature was so warm that we almost could not sleep.

You would get better hotel quality for the same price a bit farther out of the city. Its a no frills business hotel that is located in a nice location. The cash amount was 25% less than hotels.com reservation. English.... Not so much. The room had a faulty TV set that was broken. I didn't want to go through the Hassel of changing rooms and dealing with the staff member again so I just stayed in the room. They found the reservation the next day and refused dead the cash. However I am slightly disturbed that the cost was considerably lower than the price I paid with hotels. There are plenty of hotels in the area and for the price paid there is better value and less hassle to be found.

- sasquatchsf (8/5): Very good business hotel, clean, excellent location - Don't be misled by the Howard Johnson branding -- this is a Marriott/Hilton quality hotel. My room (a Superior King) was surprisingly large, with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was excellent, with enough room for a large shower and a separate tub. Some minor complaints: While there is a thermostat on the wall, I was not able to actually lower the temperature. Later I found out it was centrally controlled, and I found it a bit too warm. Also, I noticed that the carpet was starting to get a bit worn and stained in places. The hotel's breakfast buffet was quite extensive and high quality, featuring dozens of hot and cold items (both Asian and western), plus an egg & noodle station. In terms of location, the IAPM mall (one of the nicest I've ever seen, with a lot of wonderful restaurants) is about a 3-minute walk down the block, and the Shaanxi South Road subway station is about 3-4 minutes away as well. I would happily stay here again!

However I didn’t get a good rest due to the construction opposite and within the hotel. By 7am, the drilling and knocking was non stop. For now, I wouldn’t recommend this hotel unless u will be up and away from the hotel by 7am!

Just staying here one night for a biz trip this month. The pricing is comparatively reasonable and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. As opposed to other reviewers, I was lucky to NOT stay at the noisy side of the hotel. I expect this to go on for some time, so if you are planning to stay in next weeks, make sure u get a room at the quiet side of the hotel... i would make this a requirement for the booking.

The lobby is clean and the staff is very helpful and kind! they speak English well. The location of the hotel is its best asset. Perfect. In the middle of the French area, 5 min from many restaurants, bars, night life, clubs, metro, shopping mall, super-brands shopping, coffee shops. Wonderful area. The hotel is best value for money. enjoy.

Other than the noise, one can also feel the heavy equipment in action even when lying in bed! A hotel to avoid unless you plan to hold an in-room party!
- Chi (10/5): Lovely hotel! Convenient, new, comfortable! - Superb location, next to huge iAPM mall, but still off the beaten track! It's close to underground. We even walked to Xujiahui within 30mins. The property is very new and comfortable. On our last day, the bell staff helped get a Egobus to airport, which is very reasonable and comfortable. We will surely come back.

- missnorth (8/5): Very good hotel in great area. - Recently stayed at this hotel in one of their suites. The room was very comfortable and with a separate wardrobe area with bath robes, umbrella, ironing board etc provided. The bathroom was large with a powerful shower, separate bath if needed, good sized towels and comoplimentary Occitane toiletries. The location was in a trendy, cafe/small bar/small restaurant area in the old French quarter. The hotel itself was quiet, but there were plenty of nice places to eat/drink in the evening, and the location was also not too far by taxi to the most interesting sights. Very well priced for the location and comfort. Would definitely recommend.

In the day, the area is tame and business like. When night comes, the area is filled with revelers and local residents alike. The hotel room is nicely appointed and clean. Lifts and air-conditioning are efficient. Staff are polite and efficient as well. The lobby is however a little small.

A great hotel and an even greater find :)
- apdemas (8/5): Decent Hotel in a Great Location in the Former French Concession - I've stayed here twice now and it's a pretty good hotel with an excellent location in the Former French Concession. The rooms are comfortable, with a good number of outlets and plenty of space. The bathrooms are clean and well-appointed, with bottles of water replenished daily. The air-conditioning worked so-so the first time I stayed, but worked quite well the most recent time. Same with the Internet-worked so-so back in October of 2016, but in June of 2017, it was quite reliable. No VPN, so make sure you've got one if you need it. Front desk staff was efficient and helpful, and room staff were studious about making sure everything was taken care of. We used the laundry service, and it worked great. Location is fantastic-just a 5-minute walk to the South Shaanxi Station, which is in the basement of a really nice mall. You're also right near a lot of excellent restaurants, and within easy walking distance of nice areas of the Former French Concession.

- THEBONDIGIRL (6/5): Average hotel with poor Wi-Fi but the location is its best asset! - I asked reception what their star rating was and they said, seeing they were a business hotel they had no stars which I found strange? Either way it suited my touring group because there was only business clientele at the hotel and not families. It is a small hotel but it’s greatest advantage was the location. Unfortunately, as the hotel knew we were coming from an early morning flight, they were not prepared for a very large group checking in which seemed chaotic. We had to go away for hours whilst rooms were prepared and we were staying 5 weeks. LOCATION: In the French concession area, which is close to the subway/metro, plenty of café’s, bakeries and eateries close by, a post office, China mobile shop, a high end IAPM shopping centre which had a lovely supermarket. We had easy access to pubs, bars and clubs thus plenty of choice for various celebrations and meeting up with friends. Shanghai isn’t really for sightseeing and it is quite westernised so you won’t get the same China experience as one gets in Beijing. CUSTOMER SERVICE: The staff tried mostly to be helpful (one man in particular was unhelpful and quite gruff) but the guest relations staff did their best to translate and be of service which was much appreciated. It’s nearly impossible to get taxis from out front therefore, one had to go to the busy intersection in an attempt to get cabs. WI-FI: Terrible and appalling for a business hotel. We made complaints which fell on deaf ears, as the Wi-Fi was non-existent but if you were lucky it dropped in and out. At one point, there was an upgrading of the Wi-Fi which actually made it worse. I found buying a sim card didn’t work well either and using VPN’s can be a problem. Local cafés are the only way to go for Wi-Fi but half the time you will need a Chinese mobile number for access? AIRCON: A problem for some people as not all the rooms had good working aircon and it reverted back to the original setting of 25 degrees. BREAKFAST: Was simple and fresh. The staff couldn’t do enough to help out and be of service which was endearing. I enjoyed the simple breakfast on offer: an egg station, fruit, cereals, hot food choices and juices etc. SMOKING: China has a non-smoking policy in hotels but it doesn’t stop people from smoking and the hotel floors could reek of the stench of smoke. I had to move rooms because the smell of cigarette smoke was so strong in the furnishings and as I’m allergic it’s a struggle to find a real non-smoking room. ROOMS: Not large rooms, slightly dated décor but clean and functioning. The beds are comfortable and I was able to get a foam pillow. Whilst they do a good job, the housekeeping staff are loud especially in the mornings and communication to get anything done is a huge problem. Right outside my window were very loud generators which sounded like car engines revving for hours on end in the mornings. It’s an average hotel but we were all grateful for the close location to our workplace, not being on a motorway and having food, a metro station and a shopping centre close by.

- Jeremy (4/5): Utterly Clueless... - This is a hotel that is not only adjacent to my office, but also a short walk from my house and from the outside it looks quite nice and from my experiences in stopping into the lounge for a drink it was pleasant enough, so when my wife and I were packing up to move it was the obvious choice to stay while the movers had control of our belongings… The problem, however starts with the fact that the Chinese Customs Department needs your real passport when you’re moving AND in order to check into a hotel they require said passport as well… While we instinctively knew this, we also know that any reasonable hotel understands international travelers and does there best to find a solution, while staying within their local rules… This does not describe the Howard Johnson on HuiHui Road…. Instead they were difficult, obnoxious and as they made every new demand for various paperwork, which we delivered, they produced a new obstacle… Finally having enough of this, voices were raised and they agreed to call the police for permission to take our extensive library of color printouts as proof of residency, etc… It only took an hour and a half to check into this disappointing, stained carpet, crappy-wifi room… In China, Howard Johnson is a respectable brand, but the staff at this location, from the Manager on down, needs a bit of help with how to solve basic problems rather than creating even more… There are plenty of wonderful places to stay in Shanghai… I just won’t choose this place again.

Used the restaurant once, food was ok but were the only people in there We found lots of reasonably priced restaurants and bars within 15 mins walk, but when we asked hotel staff they had no idea. Maybe there were not locals!!!

- Liam (10/5): Excellent good value hotel in terrific location - I am a regular business visitor to Shanbghai. I spend about 2 of every 6 weeks there. I have been staying inn other downtown more expensive hotels, but had this one recommended to me recently. I was very happy. Staff are friendly and helpful. Room, considering what I paid was excellent value for money. The lobby bar is ok, and the restaurant as hotel restaurants go is also ok. In particular the linch is pretty good. The location is terrific with all kinds of restauramts and shopping within mins. Will I be back...yes for sure!

- Wendy (10/5): Great...with one slight glitch - Lovely and clean hotel in central location, with very friendl and helpful reception/bell-boys (who have taxis waiting even before you're done). Only thing is, after checking me in, I went up to my room and saw an overcoat on the bed and a luggage in the room. Sensing something amiss, I went downstairs and found out that they forgot to update the system when they checked-in an earlier guest. Luckily I was spared any embarrassing moments but they were apologetic and quickly sorted everything out. Highly recommend this hotel.
- JLV (8/5): Good location, needs faster internet. - Very attentive staff always come right out to open your cab door and help you unload anything you might be porting. Some English-speaking staff, though I never had the need to really stretch their English abilities. We had a good rate (50% sale) and for that it was an excellent value, though if I had to pay full price... I think you can find just about as good for much less--though you would probably sacrifice having English-speaking front desk staff and a softer bed (they tend to be pretty firm at the more Chinese-geared, less-expensive hotels you can't find on Expedia). The internet was much too slow for a "broadband" connection... seemed more analogous to dial-up connections of old. However, that is typical of every Chinese hotel I've stayed in. Nice soaking tub in the bathroom with lots of hot water!

The sealing in the bathroom are black and it looks dirty. Trouble was also the parking, parking is underground in the neighbor office building and there is no direct connection to the hotel.

- Mike (10/5): Return to an old favorite - I like this property. And it's not because the hotel is far superior to other similar (and similarly priced) properties in Shanghai. I love the neighborhood. If you want to find things to criticize it would not be hard to say that the breakfast is overpriced, as is most of what you might enjoy in the lobby bar. But it's not ridiculously expensive either. But you can find excellent alternatives nearby. It's all about the neighborhood. Everything from quick, easy, & cheap to some of the finest dining in Shanghai is within walking distance. There are two subway lines close by (the #1 and #10 lines) and if you're like me you'll love the metro in Shanghai. Cheap, clean, efficient, and MUCH SAFER than your typical Shanghai taxi ride!!! Try The Camel bar just up Fenyang Lu for decent pub grub (good specials several nights) close by. El Patio, in the same direction as The Camel only closer, you'll find an intimate atmosphere and great spanish cuisine. Maya (you'll have to look up the location , but you can walk there from HoJo's) may be the best Mexican food in Shanghai, but don't expect your typical mexican restaurant, this is a VERY upscale Cali-mex spot with absolutely wonderful food. Try any of their ceviche options, joyous!! But you won't get out without a serious dent put in your wallet either. Anyway, I highly recommend the HJ Huaihai Hotel. The staff is great, the rooms are very nice, and the neighborhood is one of the best in Shanghai!!
