Guest Reviews
- XimenaGomez (8/5): - This hotel is really far from the city, in vaporetto is like a 15 min ride to the St. Mark Plaza. But is really nice and relaxing place away from the noisy city. when we got there they inform us the bar was open til 12 but on two separate occasions they told us they were close and it was like 8pm. The men in charge (manager I assume) was really nice but the lady in the 'cafe' was really mean and rude towards her own employees which I really dislike. She yelled at them in front of us.
The property has a really big front and side patios to walk, the rooms are small and tight and the shower is the smallest that I have experienced in Italy I had to open the door to soap my feet. Breakfast was nice better than most places.
- AntounetteMacke (8/5): - The staff was friendly and helpful ,, my room was in good condition with a jacuzzi tub !! I had a wonderful stay
- Dan (8/5): Quiet From the Chaos - Was a very quiet island; no restaurant at the hotel was a problem. Very helpful staff; however, was confusing to get to and from Venice with the water buses (vaporetto).
- Santosh (6/5): Venice - Overall enjoyed my stay, particularly local area was stunningly beautiful, it was my first trip to Venice.
As the hotel is in an island, getting to and from the city late night could be tricky. Hotel provided a boat service on two nights, that was really helpful. Gentleman at the desk in nighttime was extremely pleasant and willing to help us .
My single room was too small, access to tea, coffee and hot water was limited. Breakfast was only served after 8am, had to miss breakfast when I had to leave early.

- Adel (10/5): Nice simple and clean hotel with very nice staff - I stayed at Certosa for 3 nights, hotels location is unique yet close to central Venice and surrounding islands..very friendly, informative and nice staff
- Bob (8/5): quiet location - Easy boat ride from airport/cruise terminal. Location quiet location (awake to birds singing and green grass, pesky mosquitoes too) on another island (short pubic boat ride to Venice proper) that houses a marinara and a kayaking outfit where you can kayak the canals or bay (recommended). Room was nice, clean, large bathroom with show and tub (jacuzzi portion of tub inop). Bed was comfortable. On sight restaurant and bar. Food and price was good. Mosquito issue in restaurant, as doors are kept open. Nice out door seating for both bar and restaurant, breeze keeps mosquitoes away. Easy check in, check out. Only one clerk, could take a few minutes if busy. Clerk provided a great map and description of public ferry system!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very friendly staff - boat came to pick us up after services had finished at no cost.
- Guido (10/5): Buenísimo - Excelente
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice hotel in a calm environment. Easy to get to everywhere if you buy the pass for the ACTV boats. Internet is not that fast and connection stops quite often.
Breakfast are good but a bit expensive for what you get. 9 Euros
- Philippa (8/5): Excellent Service! - Only stayed here for one night. Was meant to arrive in the afternoon, but my flight was diverted due to a lightening storm and I didn't arrive until 9pm. Staff were great - I rang earlier to let them know I was delayed and my estimated arrival. Once I got there, I was quickly checked in and directed to the restaurant for a late dinner. The room I booked was simple, but very clean and comfortable. As the hotel is located on Certosa it has a very exclusive feel and plenty of grounds to wander round.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Anneve (8/5): Friendly receptionist, beautiful location! - I loved where the hotel was located, it was near beautiful scenery and even more beautiful yachts! The receptionist was very accomdating and super friendly. He walked through how the boats worked on the island which had me at ease when I traveled later in the night.
- ANA MARINA (10/5): Hermoso lugar - Hermoso lugar. Muy cómodo, bonito, habitación amplia y cómoda. Hermoso jardín y muy buen desayuno. Totalmente recomendable. Un lugar muy tranquilo y agradable
- Verified traveler (10/5): Experience Something Different - Pros:
1. located in isolated island, very peaceful if you want to run out of the crowd
2. clean rooms
3. friendly staffs
4. bar and location very cool
5. free shuttle service after mid night (though I do not have to use it)
Cons:
1. Wi - Fi not dependable and very slow
2. restaurant does not have many choices
3. nothing around other than hotel its restaurant and the bar
4. BBC and CNN are the only english channel
- DAIHSUAN (10/5): - Hotel service and staffs are very great, friendly. Any questions, they could give my answers/support. I really recommend this nice hotel. Francois
- Daniel (6/5): Bring ear plugs with you - In general a fine hotel - but the loud motor (aircondition? drains?) on the outside wall, just next to our room, was a no-go! Kept making loud noises throughout the whole night.
- Elaine (8/5): Room too small, good location - The island is great, we see the sunset when waiting the boat
- Jordan (8/5): Romantic quiet island getaway - Excellent service from very friendly and warm staff, delicious meal in restaurant.
Hotel itself is fairly basic but very clean and comfortable.
Nice quiet island perfect for a romantic get away. But check travel times with knowledgeable staff.
- Karine (10/5): super hotel - Parfait!
- Karen (10/5): A friendly, peaceful place - Really lovely staff. Good value. It's a little out of the way but very peaceful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel - Nice hotel, a bit away from the city, but you can easy travel by public boat.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Muy mal ubicado.
- Piyush (8/5): Nice island stay - The hotel offers serene surroundings of a laid back island. The way to the hotel from the nearest boat stop is beautiful especially when you cross a walking bridge over the sea. Restaurant serves limited options and for limited timing. In fact reception desk also operates for a limited timing. The transport to the hotel is difficult at night when you are using public transport. The lawns are not well maintained. There is no room service.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Court mais tres sympa - Lieu magique, conseille fortement, tres bon accueil, grande chambre, salle d'eau correcte, par contre petite douche, petit dej correct, peut etre a amelieurer.
- Demetrius (10/5): Space to recharge - After years of staying in dirty, overpriced hotels in Venice itself, I decided to try something different. I gravitated towards Certosa Hotel for its high ratings and interesting location and I must say that it exceeded all my expectations.
Isola la Certosa is about a 5-minute boat ride from the nearest stop in Venice proper (and about 10-15 minutes from San Marco). Though it may sound like an annoyance, having this little buffer is something that I welcomed. Venice itself is a beautiful place, but overwhelming to say the least. Eventually, you will tire of constant crowds, knickknack stands, and pizzerias blocking you at every turn. Returning in the evening to an island that has nothing but your hotel, its restaurant+cafe, and a nature preserve is a good way to reset yourself for the next day. Boats run very frequently and, when they aren't running due to scheduling or excessive fog, the hotel has a free shuttle service to near the Sant'Elena stop in Venice.
- Tzvi (2/5): Outrageous! - After spending over an hour 'sailing' to this '3 star' hotel from the train station at 1 am, I was horrified to discover a room smaller than a penitentiary cell, with no towels, no heating, no hot water and not even toiletries. Given the late hour there wasn't anyone to talk to since reception desk was closed.
I had a room booked for few nights, however I took off the next morning without looking back.
This experience will hunt me for a while.
- Shan Yi (6/5): location is alittle off the main venice island - The receptionists were very helpful, location is alittle off the main venice island
- virna (8/5): Beautiful Venice island - It's an oasis away from Venice's tourism, after a day exploring the city. It looks like you're in another place. Beautiful little island, easy to travel by vaporetto. Very helpful staff. Good value for money. Room is simple but clean and functional.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Stupendo
- Verified traveler (6/5): Quiet Hotel, Room as advertised - Lovely location with plenty of means to get to the other islands. No problem with vaperetti stopping when needed.
Room was quite basic, but probably deserves the 3* that it was advertised at. So no complaints. Wiuld stay again.
- ilse (8/5): Peace and quiet - Nice to get away from venice's hustle and bustle. A bit of a ride but I loved the boat rides to and from the hotel. Super friendly and efficient staff. To take vaporetto 4.1, go out the train station, walk to the left towards the river. 4.1 is located there, not towards the right with all the others. The ticket booth for 3 day tickets is on the square to the left as you exit the train station.
- Wolfgang (8/5): jederzeit wieder - Ruhige Insel, aber schnell beim Biennale-Gelände
- Tom Eklund (8/5): Fredfullt i Venezia! - 10 minutter fra Markusplassen med rutebåt. Fredfull liten øy, ingen biler. God mat, både frokost og middag i idylliske omgivelser.
- gregory (10/5): an unforgettable experienceS - it was a totally different experience for me ;the
surroundings being different to what I expected ; the hotel staff were warm and welcoming and helpful and added to a most enjoyable holiday.
the hotel is well run and service excellentan
- Verified traveler (10/5): Certosa Hotel = Beautiful - I loved this little hotel that was tucked away in Certosa. It was a great value for what we got, comfortable, beautiful to wake up at, and the staff was very nice. At first we were a little taken aback by the need for the water taxis and how long it took, but when we look back on it now it was part of the adventure and really made our first visit to Venice that much more special. (Walking from the water taxi into Venice for the first time with the music, and the view was one of our favourite moments from our trip.) They even have a free shuttle service available for those who stay out in venice passed midnight (easier to do than we thought!).
- Mihai Viorel (10/5): - We love it.
- Robert (2/5): Extremely expensive youth hostel, not a hotel. - We were disappointed to find out that the Certosa Hotel was actually more akin to a youth hostel. The staff were very friendly however the room was extremely basic. When you are paying ~110 euro a night excluding breakfast, you expect much more. Moreover, the park where the hostel is situated is being completely refurbished so the retreat like qualities of the location are void. This was not advertised on the website. Overall we feel like we were miss-sold.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Remote location but nice break from city - On a neighboring island from the city, but not so difficult to get to. Free boat offered by the hotel all night after public transit boat stops running. Very friendly staff. Bed not so comfortable for my taste. I would stay there again.
- Harris (8/5): Nice hotel, friendly staff, and reasonable price - Nice hotel, friendly staff, and reasonable price.
- Susan G. (10/5): Enjoyed my second stay at the Hotel Certosa! - The hotel is spotlessly clean, reasonably priced, very comfortable, and located on a quiet island with a marina very close to Venice. It is just a wee bit tricky getting on and off the island as you have to turn on a light (and the right one!) to flag a vaporetto during the day, and phone for the hotel's shuttle boat after 9 PM. The hotel staff members are wonderful, speak many languages and are very helpful. I was a little disappointed that they have redecorated the formerly artistic/poetic rooms since last summer, and that they have traded the beautiful wooden motor launch for a more prosaic shuttle boat. Nonetheless, it's a great place to stay in Venice!
- Verified traveler (8/5): 4.1/ 4.2 vaporetto is a request stop for Certosa. - My stay was very good. The hotel and its extensive grounds are very quiet and somewhat isolated from Venice. There is a 10 minute walk from the vaporetto stop to the hotel. The staff are friendly and the hotel is clean. Good and plentiful buffet breakfast.
- Susan (10/5): This is a wonderful, quiet place to stay in Venice - The Certosa is on the Isola della Certosa, one of the islands that makes up Venice. Other than the hotel (with its bar and restaurant) there is just a sailors' marina, sailing school and a park under construction. The whole island is quiet and peaceful, and it's lovely to have breakfast out on the patio with the birds singing. The design of the Certosa is beautiful -- clean lines, nice splashes of colour, lots of art in each room, simple, functional and lovely. My room was not big but had everything I needed and felt spacious. The people at the hotel were very friendly and helpful, and the call-up service for the hotel's shuttle boat worked fine (since I had a cell phone with an Italian sim card). The first time it was a little scary walking to the boat doc at the Stadio Santa Elena, but after I'd done it once it was easy. It's great to have a quiet country retreat to go to after a busy day in the crowds in Venice and the Biennale, and it's only a 5 minute boat ride away from the centre of town. Highly recommended!
- dennis (6/5): Good except WIFI didn't work - Everything was good (even the remote location) but WIFI somehow didn't work in my room (no.25). I had to use the public pc on the 1st floor .
- Verified traveler (8/5): Hotel away from the main Island - The hotel requires boat rides which cost 35 Euros for a 72 hour pass. But it adds to the Venice experience. If you return in the night, the hotel arranges pick up from the nearest island.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Biennale Break - 2 stops from the Venice Biennal this place is a hidden gem with a lovely breakfast!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing place ! great place to stay.. - Very good place! quite, clean and nice..its a very good idea to talk a vreak from the busy city and have a quit dinner or brekfest in Certosa.
- John (8/5): Your sense of adventure will be greatly rewarded - If you know what Certosa is like and can appreciate it, this is really a great place to stay. The lodging is not meant to be formal but is perfectly suited to seeing Venice from a more informal, peaceful and outdoorsy setting. The room was basic but very comfortable, clean and romantic with big windows that opened onto a natural wooded setting. Food was terrific. Staff was terrific. And the experience was unique, especially since we arranged for a guided kayak tour that left from the hotel. The Certosa had the feeling of a very nice lodge -- not too fancy or formal -- but absolutely relaxed and elegant in its own way. We loved it and would return.
- les (8/5): very pleasent - apart from some idiot who decided to have a cigarette at 4 in the morning and setting off the fire alarm a very pleasent stay and we knopw the alarm works ok
- James (8/5): Good hotel to experience the lagoon. - Bar nice and restaurant good. Fine breakfast. I'll return, even though it is a hassle to get to the main areas by boat. The June tornado destroyed several trees and they are trying to fix things, still. Lots of rabbits, if you like nature. The rooms are decorated by a different artist. That makes the rooms somewhat special. The staff could not be nicer and more helpful.
- Mitch (6/5): Great staff, very clean, but NO INTERNET IN ROOMS. - So clean that the floors were literally squeaking! Fresh décor, great service, friendly atmosphere. However, I choose this hotel as it said it had internet. It does have internet, but there is NO INTERNET IN THE ROOMS, only in communal areas. I wish I would have known this before my stay. Also, a lot of reviews talked about the private boat to Certosa Island like it was romantic. It's basically an old, open top fishing boat that could get VERY cold in winter.
- Brittany (4/5): Not a good location, especially for younger crowd - Overall, I was not pleased with this hotel mostly due to location. It is the only thing on the small & transportation to & from the island was a huge issue during our visit. You have to specifically request the shuttles to stop at the island & the boats stop running at 8 pm, which of course means you are limited in the evenings. The hotel does offer an after hours shuttle which is free, but you have to call to get it. Being from the States, our phones didn't work over there so we had to buy an expensive phone card just to call to have them pick us up & we had a lot of trouble even finding a pay phone that worked. The shuttle passes were extremely expensive, so while I thought I was saving money booking this hotel instead of one in the city, I actually still ended up spending the difference on transportation to get to Venice. We are in our early 20s & were the only ones in the hotel that age. Everyone else was older couples or families. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you meet one of those categories and plan to be in early every night anyway. The hotel was very nice & our room was decent size compared to others we stayed at in the UK. The staff is friendly, helpful & speak English. Led to believe that breakfast was complimentary & upon checkout were told that in fact it was not. & it was really expensive which just added further cost. I would recommend staying either in Venice or on Lido where transportation is a little smoother & there is more to do later.
- Tom (8/5): Beautiful hotel but weird location - I really enjoyed the room and hotel, however, the only downside is its location. Each of the rooms have a unique painting with a description from the artist explaining its meaning which I thought was kind of cool. The bed was very comfortable and the room had a feel as if it was new. My room on the top floor also offered an interesting view of the lagoon. The room was very clean, along with the hotel. Before booking this hotel, understand that it is not necessarily difficult to get to, it just takes a lot of time to reach. A journey from the bus or train station will take about an hour using the vaporetto. At night they have a service from the hotel that picks up guests with a speed boat at the Santa Elena stop on the eastern end of the main part of Venice. It is walkable from San Marco but it would take a while to reach. The boat arrived shortly after I called, which was very nice. The woman at the front desk was very helpful telling me which boats I needed to take to get to different islands and also the easiest way of getting to Treviso airport. She also gave me a map and explained the best things to do and how to get there. I would definitely recommend staying here, but I would say if you are only in Venice for one night like I was, to just stay in central Venice. I feel like this is more the type of place that is better for a stay for a couple of days.
- Piotr M. (8/5): Very interesting.... - I spent three nights there as part of a romantic Venice getaway. The hotel is located on an island with regular vaporetto service only available until 20:00 so if you stay in Venice later (which of course you do) you need to call for a free boat to take you there. That felt like having a private motor boat service but could be a pain as boat pickup location was far away from St Marco square. Hotel was excellent in terms of quality. Two drawbacks : very small room, WiFi only in the bar. I recommend it to those not in a hurry.
- Shankar (8/5): Certosa hotel - a (wonderful) departure frm normal - Booked this hotel as it was one of few available in peak season in Venice within budget...but how wonderful the experience became!! The hotel is on its own little island, so nicely near & remote that it requires requiring one to tell in advance about alighting from the boat (lines 41/42 from/to san marco)...speaking of the boat lines, last boat to certosa is at 8pm from san marco, so the hotel provides this wonderful service of pickup anytime after that from st.elena...it felt like one's own private boat!!!
The staff were the friendliest compared to all our stays in Italy during the 2 weeks. Very patient in explaining what to do, where to go etc. Only negative about the hotel (and same in a few other places we stayed in) is the ridiculously small shower area!! Also we never tried their breakfast so cant comment.
All in all a great place to stay during a Venice sojourn.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Hotel Certosa - We were so glad that we booked our Venice stay at the Hotel Certosa. It was such a restful refuge yet close enough to all the action on the main island by just taking a vaporetto over the channel. The hotel staff was extremely helpful and kind. My only complaint is that the air conditioning system pumped cigarette smoke from someone elses room into our room. As I'm allergic to smoke, I wasn't thrilled about that. We would definitely go back, and we've already recommended the hotel to friends.
- Dan (8/5): Unusual Vacation spot, especially in Venice! - The Hotel Certosa is a unique spot to stay, and it gives you a different perspective on Venice. You do have to take the vaparettos often, but getting a 3-day pass or similar, makes you think less about how much they cost. And they were reliable in getting you to town in about 15 minutes. And for those wanting to go to Murano or other islands, it's very convenient.
Even locals didn't seem to know of the island. Part of that is pronunciation--when I said "Ser-tosa" it didn't ring a bell. It's pronounced "Cher-toza." The vaporetto staff will recognize that. The nighttime shuttle could be a little dicey, but both times I took it, after 11pm, there was another passenger or two waiting to go to the Island.
It's true, there isn't much to see out there besides yachts and other boats, but you do get to see how much everything in that city and area happens on the water. The staff was helpful and there was plenty of space to hang out if you want to use the free wifi access in the public spaces.
It was a good value in a very expensive city, and it's incredibly quiet on the island.
- Matt (10/5): Certosa Hotel - April 2011 - This hotel exceeded our expectations by a long shot. At only 3 stars, my wife and I were expecting a low end hotel, but in truth, this place was excellent. Extremely clean, VERY friendly staff, and a great little bar / restaurant in the bottom of the building.
The location, while a LITTLE inconvenient, is a lot of fun. The hotel is actually located behind a boat yard, and the walk down to the waterbus stop is short, but very pretty. The waterbus is very regular, and for after hours, the shuttle service the hotel runs is very fast, and VERY comfortable. (The boat is like something out of a Connery Era Bond film. :) )
The only drawback, and it is a very slight one, was the unexpected size of the shower. It's only 2' x 2' in size, and for a guy like me at over 6' tall, with the accompanying width, it was a tight squeeze. Since you only spend 5 minutes a day in the shower though, it's almost irrelevant.
If we ever make it back to Venice, we would definately stay here again. It was a wonderful experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5): very nice hotel - Hotel Certosa is a very nice hotel. It is a little bit difficult to go around (not because of its location, but because of the transportation). The water bus comes every 20 mins and the stop "Certosa" is not always on the water bus schedule (it's always good to ask the sailor). Overall, it's a great hotel for its price and the staff is very friendly.
- Suzy (6/5): Lost in the Lagoon - Hotel and staff very pleasant with quiet, peaceful surroundings, rooms as illustrated, slept very well, comfortable beds, very clean throughout. At the end of our stay they didn't stick any iffy charges on, we just paid for the breakfasts we had. The hotel is quite a way out in the lagoon and since individual vaporetto tickets only last 1 hour, it is better to get a ticket for the duration then you can forget about tickets and times and just hop on or off as you wish. In 5 days we never had our tickets inspected once, but if you haven't paid you can get a hefty fine. Make sure you swipe your ticket each time. Water travel is expensive, but fun and you can just get 2 or 3 days also. You can then zip around the lagoon. It is time consuming to go back to the hotel during the day and come out again, best to go out and stay out till late evening, there is a free shuttle after 9.00 at night, but you have to phone for it, take your mobile (also charger and plug converter) as local phones are tricky and often don't work. You might have to wait about ten to twenty minutes for the shuttle which is a nice little covered boat. When eating in the city, avoid the menu turistico... usual inedible leathery escaloppe milanese, stick to main menu, can get pizza or pasta for reasonable prices, and wonderful fish. Food is generally very enjoyable. There are many things to see and visit in Venice, all of them full of artistry and delight. The most photo opportunities anywhere.
- Hamid (8/5): A very nice hotel but very remote and not easily accessable - Certosa hotel is in the Certosa Island meaning you have to catch a water bus or taxi to get in/out of the island. There's only one restaurant in the whole island and it's inside the hotel. This is basically a nice little hotel but more suited for mariners since there's a big shipyard across the hotel. The water bus does make a stop but only up to a certain hours, if you miss the last bus from Venice then you have to find your own transport getting there.
The room was descent size very clean and quite comfortable. Breakfast is good (typical European breakfast) but wasn't included not sure if it says it does, but considering this is the only place to eat on the island its no brainier that it's either here or nothing! Also the phones in the hotel only call within the hotel and there's no outside land line as far as I can tell. I was told there's a public phone near the pier but didn't see one. So if you are coming from overseas don't have a cell and rely on using phone card then good luck! Make all your calls when you are in Venice because you won't be able to from the hotel or the whole island for that matter!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Interesting hotel - After reading the reviews, I was a little concerned about finding the hotel but it is very easy to get to if you arrive during the day. Very clean and peaceful. Woke up to birds singing. I would definitely stay here again.
