- Porte1111 (10/5): A reliable old fashioned gem - Always just right. Very friendly, off the beaten track and therefore quiet, comfortable. Old fashioned charm, reminds me of 65 years ago. Tiny rooms (this is Venice after all) but well designed bathrooms nonetheless. VG breakfast. Good value. Been here 5 times and counting. Not grande luxe - and so much the better for that.
- MMM8 (10/5): All Around Great - La Calcina is a wonderful hotel, with exceptional staff, spectacular views from those rooms looking out over the Zattere, and the perfect location. I stayed there for a week in late January/early February and, while my room could have used some fresh paint, I could not have been happier with my stay. The housekeeping staff kept my room immaculately clean, the bed was comfortable, and the front desk staff was patient and friendly, ready to help with whatever I needed. On top of all that, the food and service in the dining room and on the terrace were both fine. There is also a cozy bar/lounge for coffee, a spritz, or just settling in with a good book on a rainy day. Would be a great place for couples and at the same time, I was quite comfortable there on my own.

He was So helpful - the way Samuel presented details on map on how to reach Murano and Burano are standards for any tourist) Exceptional staff - thanking also other reception staff, cooks, stylish waiters, cleaning personal, security guides - you do fabulous team work and I have now second home in Venice.
- 407briant (10/5): THE place stop and dine in Venice. - After many visits for lunch at La Calcina over the years, we decided that during our 2 night stop-over in Venzia, we would stop there for those 2 nights. Thus we were able to enjoy the service, the food, the decor and the ambience of this delightful hotel for 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts. It was up to all expectations! Our room with its majestic views over the Giudecca Canal was just a delight. We cannot recommend this wonderful hotel and its dining experience highly enough.
- ChitownFCM (10/5): A serene hotel for your stay in La Serenissima - A wonderful hotel that fronts the Giudecca Canal. I’ve been a guest three times and the staff and hotel have never disappointed me. The rooms are charmingly appointed, super clean and spacious by European standards. And the restaurant, be it for the complimentary buffet breakfast, lunch or dinner has excellent offerings. We happily dined there both of our nights at the hotel this visit. The area is walking distance of all of Venice’s sites yet removed from the overcrowding of St. Mark’s Square, Rialto Bridge, etc. It is a very short walk to the 5.2 vaporetto that takes you either to the bus to the airport or the Santa Lucia railroad station in only about 15-20 minutes and is only a 5 minute walk to the all important #1 vaporetto line near the Accademia Bridge. Every staff member, from the front desk, the bellhop, the cleaning staff to the waitstaff was professional, friendly and helpful. When you chose your room, realize there is no elevator, so if you have any mobility issues, reserve a room on the first (second American) floor. We will definitely stay there when our travels return us to La Serenissima.

The employees are all lovely, welcoming, fun and concerned that you have the best time!! They were thrilled to speak with me in Italian, which was such a pleasure! I heard them speaking multiple languages with their wordly guests. It is an absolutely gorgeous hotel with plush old-world decor that feels luxurious! The inside dining area feels like living in a mansion. The waterfront setting with the incomparable blue colors was a punctuation mark! It was our second time at La Calcina and we will be going back again!

- 28jenniferv (10/5): Absolutely wonderful stay - What an absolute gem!! I travelled solo to Venice and stayed for four nights. The hotel is ideally located on the water right by a Vaporetto stop as well as an Alilaguna stop which goes to the airport so it was super easy to get there. The hotel was clean and charming. The staff was so incredibly kind and friendly. I felt like I was so well cared for being there alone. Breakfast was great and varied, and at night it was so peaceful after a busy day of sight seeing to sit outside in front of the hotel with a glass of wine looking at the water. The staff always welcomed me back in with a smile. I absolutely loved the Dorsoduro neighborhood. It was close enough to everything without being in the center of hordes of tourists. There were plenty of restaurants and things to do there, yet an easy walk or Vaporetto ride to any other part of Venice. I had a twin room with a bathroom. It came with a mini fridge and a small terrace, and most importantly, some excellent air conditioning. I highly recommend this hotel. If I return to Venice this is exactly where I'm staying again.

- swisstraveller002 (10/5): My perfect place in Venice - This was my 3rd stay at La Calcina, and I honestly cant think of any better hotel for me in Venice. Everything here is just wonderful ! The location is fantastic: its on the Zattere, with view of the Guidecca canal and Guidecca. In the best Sestiere of Venice (for me), Dorsoduro. There are plenty of restaurants in walking distance. A fantastic gelateria next door (Nico). Two lovely osterias as well just around the corner. The Zattere and Accademia vaporetto stops are just 1-2 minutes away. Its central, but not touristy, and its great. Having breakfast (a small but good buffet) outside on the Zattere is fantastic. The restaurant is very good. There is a nice lounge with antique furniture and a small courtyard. The place is soaked in history and lovely details. Staff is extremely friendly and multilingual. This time, I had a small but comfortable single room, with everything that I need, and a tiny balcony with a view over the small canal next to the hotel.

- Happiness723399 (10/5): An Authentic Venetian hotel With outstanding service - My wife and I spent three nights at the hotel in mid June. Not your Hilton, Hyatt or Marriott but a GREAT European/Venetian style hotel with all the feeling of old Europe. The staff were the friendliest I have ever encountered at any hotel. They went over and above to help us navigate Venice and make our stay most pleasant. The lobby and the garden were exceptional for its it old world charm and warmth. The rooms were a bit old fashion and a bit small for our liking but clean and comfortable with updated bathroom. There was no elevator which requires climbing stairs so be aware if your room is not on the ground floor. The location is superb situated on a large canal and board walk surrounded by very nice restaurants. We found the food at the hotel restaurant to be very good and not too expensive. A very nice breakfast with a hot breakfast choice is included with your stay. Thank you Lorella, Martine, Samuel and Johann for making our stay a memorable one. We hope to visit you again one day. - Mala (2/5): - I booked this hotel for my mom for 9th June, 2025 via Expedia. I even got a message in Expedia by the reception staff telling how to reach the destination. When my mom went to the hotel for check in, the night staff there said they don't have the reservation. My mom called me (overseas) and my brother and we tried to talk with the staff. His name is Anthony, and he clearly said that there is no reservation. I sent the email and message of confirmation to hotel's email. He then said that it is a fake Expedia. I was shocked, as I have used the same link to book hotels in Santorini and Rome and they both were confirmed. The staff then insisted us to pay for the night. I asked him to call the manager may be and ask him about this as there might be a confusion. He said his manager does not work until next day evening. He said to pay now and then talk to the manager tomorrow. I told him that we just booked for the night and my mom is leaving to Rome tomorrow. He just kept on saying that we have to pay. Later, I don't know what happen, he said he will check another computer and was talking to his manager. He then at last came to my mom and said that he finally found the booking. This was terrible. I was on the phone with this staff for hours and he at last did not even apologise. I don't know whose fault was this, hotel or Expedia but I think there is a way to handle this situation and I can clearly say that he was not handling it well professionally.
- A833QXlindad (10/5): Another fantastic stay - just as good the second time! - Great location away from the busy streets but close enough to walk to everything or vaporetto just outside hotel. Accommodation comfortable and decor very opulent. Beds comfortable, towels etc good standard only thing lacking was coffee/tea making facilities but that is a personal preference of ours. Staff are fantastic, they cant do enough for you. The restaurant is great, food very good and lovely atmosphere. Have stayed here before and will definitely stay again.

It’s old-school elegant, with staff who are as lovely as the accommodations. Conveniently, it’s also quite near a vapporetto stop. At check-in, we were greeted with Bellinis while staff whisked our luggage away to our room, so the fact that the hotel doesn’t have an elevator is no problem.

The staff are very friendly and helpful, and were happy to assist with restaurant recommendations, tips on navigating the water transit options and suggestions for museums and sightseeing. The view of the canal from our room was gorgeous, and the restaurant at the water's edge was a lovely way to spend the evening. The breakfast was delicious and the dining area very comfortable and beautifully decorated.

Great gelateria Nico right nearby. Beautiful canal view from room windows, old world charm, great service. Nice sitting room and dining room with water views. Stayed on second floor-steps did not bother us and they helped with our bags. Staff very helpful and let us check in earlier when our room was ready. Highly recommend.

The zattere vaporetto is a stones throw away. The restaurant has a lovely setting on the water and it is minutes to the grand canal and Sam Marco. From our large windows we could see the Giudecca canal and all the boat traffic, but it’s perfectly quiet at night. We had dinner in the hotel one night and the food was the best we’d had in Venice. Can’t wait to go back!
- Blobbvvvvvvvvgssss (10/5): Great location and wonderful staff - I have just spent a week at La Calcina on the 3rd floor of this beautiful historic building. There is no lift but luggage can be transported by staff. The beds are very comfortable and, as my windows faced due east, I could watch the sunrise on the Redentore, and see the lively stream of morning water traffic from my pillow ! Serve yourself breakfasts are delicious. The hotel location is perfect. It is in a quiet area.. The Zattere vaporetto stop is very nearby or you can walk a short distance through to the Accademia stop on the Grand Canal. The very best thing I found about the hotel is that all of the staff, but particularly the reception staff, are most kind and thoughtful.
- kittykai (10/5): Wonderful hotel - We loved this hotel! We took the water taxi from the airport to the hotel dock, which is just steps from the entrance, couldn't have been more convenient. The desk clerk was very welcoming, giving us bellinis while checking in. There is no elevator, but our bags were taken up to our room, so we had no complaints! I had asked for a room with a nice view, and we got it! Windows on two sides - loved the view of the Giudecca Canal. The room was small, but comfortable and the bathroom was nicely appointed. We enjoyed breakfast each morning; not a huge buffet, but eggs, sweets, meats and cheese - you really wouldn't want more. The location is great; we had stayed a few blocks away on a previous trip so knew the neighborhood. An easy 10-minute walk to San Marco Square and not much longer to reach Rialto Bridge. Our stay was the weekend before Ash Wednesday, so lots of Carnivale costumes to be seen and admired! We lucked out on the weather with just one day of rain. You never know what you'll get, but you're in Venice, so how can you not have a great time? Would gladly stay here again!

- janetfY6967AF (10/5): Lovely boutique hotel in perfect location - I was well looked-after during my 6-day stay at La Calcina by the small team of warm, kind and helpful staff. The more you look into the history of this former pension, ('Ruskin's house') the more its special character emerges. Rooms are nicely appointed, including single rooms - no supplements to pay. Restaurant recommended for good quality, reasonably priced meals. Central to Dorsudoro, major attractions are within walking distance with two vaporetto stations nearby. After two stays there, I would definitely return to La Calcina as my first choice hotel in Venice.
- theotQ3774EI (10/5): Must-Stay in Venice :-) - We stayed at La Calcina and absolutely loved our stay. we had a room at the upper floor with great Canal / Ocean view and a very cute bathroom with cool bath tub. It is not handicapped accessible but if you have no issues definitely worth walking up the stairs to have a room at the upper floors. the staff is really nice and wonderful kind. we have been at the La Calcina many times before for a drink, they offer great drinks or oysters but finally we also stayed there and it was definitely worth it. breakfast almost surprised us, it was definitely more "german" or "western" than typical italian, had great choices and variety. we will definitely come back, it was so worth the wait and we enjoyed it. GRAZIE!

It was a complete hotel experience with friendly, super-polite and considerate staff; tasteful interiors, comfortable beds. The location on Venice’s Zattere is unbeatable, free from crowds and offering beautiful vistas. The included breakfast was delicious and wholesome. A beautiful time at a beautiful place.
- Nina (10/5): - Staying at La Calcina was a delight from start to finish. We were greeted by Samuel, who made check-in very easy and welcomed us with a much appreciated Rossini. He continued to be very friendly and engaging throughout our stay.The whole reception team were a pleasure to deal with. The staff in the restaurant were also a real credit to the hotel. Vera , Mary and all the waiting staff were delightful and provided excellent service. We dined on the restaurant terrace three times and had excellent service each time, including a very busy service on the night of the Redentore fireworks. Our room was beautiful. It felt very Venetian. We had amazing views across the Giudecca and were able to watch the fascinating activity on the water. The hotel is in a brilliant location. The journey from the airport was straightforward and quick. You are very close to Zattere water bus stops, making getting around very easy.It has a stunning position on the waterfront and feels away from the usual tourist hustle. However, it is a short, direct walk to Accademia Bridge, so you are close to the centre. Overall , it was the perfect place to stay and we can't wait to come back.

I suspect that the only reason the hotel doesn’t have 5 stars is because it doesn’t have an elevator. This is not a problem as luggage is taken to and from guest rooms by helpful staff.

- Susan (10/5): - Charming hotel in Venice overlooking the Grand Canal. The staff is fantastic, very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. The rooms are charming, comfortable, with all the modern amenities. The breakfast provided was a great way to start the day. You could walk to a couple blocks and use the bridge to get to San Marco or a couple hundred feet away catch one of the water buses.

- Ihor (10/5): - As a last minute find, this place is brilliant. The staff are really friendly and welcoming, it has great connections to the centre and a walkable distance from most iconic places in Venice. There is also an easy transport connection. Number 2 will take you on the scenic route if you have time or one stop across the canal to the southern part with some local restaurants. The area is less crowded but still really close and there is a stop just outside, which will take you directly to the airport. Overall we are really pleased with our choice for the two night stay, the breakfast, the rooftop terrace and for Concierge suggestions on places to visit. Grazie!
- Andria (10/5): Love this place! - This was the perfect location- on the water out of the busy tourist area but an easy walk to everything. Loved the views from the roof deck. All the staff were friendly and helpful from reserving a water taxi from the airport, making dinner reservations, answering our many questions, taking luggage to our room to storing our bags on the day we left. We want to mention Lorella at the front desk and Kowsa (not sure how to spell his name) at meals. We were very well cared for.

- Carole (10/5): A great find ! - Amazing venue, historical with a literary tradition. The rooms have AC. We had a corner room, so we had a view on 2 canals, which was incredibly beautiful! The staff is multilingual, very competent, reliable and extremely friendly. The private garden is lovely, and the breakfast was delicious. A great find !
- Paul (4/5): Look elsewhere. - Not the best stay. Call it bad luck. Door key broke in the lock, no second key. No hot water first day. Second day it was luke warm. We-go didn’t work. Breakfast was so so. staff were friendly but if you don’t want to worry or think about anything we would suggest looking elsewhere. We payed full price for our three days but left for the last two days and took the hit, but we’re glad we pulled the shoot.

Where I was aware that I had selected a room with a twin bed, I had thought that the bathroom would also be in the room and not across the hallway. Guessing the hotel is refinishing things room by room. My private bathroom was literally all 3 fixtures :sink shower toilet all overlapping each other. Use your imagination. It was, however very clean but wasn’t at all comfortable. The room, was sweet and had some antique charm but, honestly, the time it took to literally tack the aged border to the wall, they could have painted the room, it would have been better. It was a surreal experience, but the staff were very nice. The breakfast was good.

The rooms are clean and well decorated but were quite small but probably typical for Venice! The restaurant served some lovely food and the breakfast buffet was well stocked. The simple breakfast was of high quality with good coffee. Comfy beds, plenty hot water and spacious simple unpretentious rooms. Mine had a bath which I enjoyed. Minutes from the Accademia and Peggy Guggenheim galleries with an easy route to the Rialto. We hope to return. Grazie!

The restaurant staff (breakfast and dinner) however were quite unfriendly, unhelpful and disorganised which was disappointing given that all other aspects of the hotel were quite pleasant.

She gave us a map and recommendations on where to walk & shop. The hotel has a courtyard and nooks where you can relax. The tower room was quirky in an Italian way. The bathroom had a wonderful view with a balcony as well. Room was clean bed.. okay. The location was on a quiet side of the city 15 to 20 min walk to St Marks Sq.

- Stephan (8/5): Nice place - First I want to start this review as all others to say I am reviewing this as a 3 star Hotel, so it’s judged based on those expectations. The hotel is well located very close to an activ boat stop and the views and sound of the water was great. The staff was excellent and hands down the best part of the hotel. The breakfast was also good and included in my stay. The room was a bit dated but still comfortable enough. Some rooms have a bathroom that is not connected, they are still private but requires going in the hallway to the next door. which is generally fine except in the middle of the night. I would definitely recommend the place as value for money was excellent. When in Venice you will spend almost no time in your room as there is so much to do, so given price and quality I would return.
- Nancy (10/5): A serene stay - This is a wonderful hotel located on Dorsoduro, in a quiet but convenient part of Venice. My room had a view of the Giudecca canal and a delicious breakfast was served each morning outside on the quai, watching the boats go by. The hotel is where John Ruskin lived when writing The Stones of Venice and it is now, as then, a pleasure to look across the canal toward Redentore, Palladio’s lovely church on the Giudecca. The hotel is beautifully appointed, with a friendly and helpful staff and is just enough off the beaten path to make one’s stay peaceful and quiet while being within easy distance of all one’s favorite sights.

Straight after check in we complained but hotel was fully booked so they couldn’t offer an alternative room sadly. Very small, dated and in need of some repair work. Staff are lovely and very helpful but sadly a rare break away was slightly tarnished by the room we had.

Desk and restaurant staff were friendly and very helpful. Room was clean and quite spacious. I would have expected a better mattress, given the room rate. Not the worst but not good. Also wish the cleaning staff would not leave windows wide open every day after cleaning the room--lets mosquitoes in. We closed them when we left but they kept opening them.
