- jamilaa244 (2/5): disappointing - Our experience with Basilio 55 Rome was extremely disappointing and stressful. My mother and I arrived in Rome on 7 May at approximately 01:20 AM after an international flight. Before our arrival, both our travel agency and we personally informed the hotel that we would arrive late due to our flight schedule. Shortly before departure, the hotel sent an email stating that reception closes at 21:30 PM. However, we were never clearly informed that our entire reservation would be cancelled without refund if we arrived later. After arriving in Rome during the night, we went directly to the hotel, but the entrance was closed and nobody answered our calls. We were left outside in a foreign country in the middle of the night with no assistance or alternative solution provided. As a result, we had to urgently search for another hotel and pay a significant additional amount for accommodation. The following morning, the hotel informed us that our reservation for the full stay had been cancelled and refused to issue any refund, despite: -being informed in advance about our late arrival, -having prior communication with us, -and the fact that we physically arrived at the property. This was not a simple “no-show” situation. We arrived, attempted contact, and came to the hotel, but were denied accommodation. The lack of communication, empathy, and basic hospitality was extremely upsetting. I strongly advise future travelers — especially those arriving late at night — to be very careful.
- Z3905LJmaryb (10/5): Spring Break in Rome with our Family - If I could give more than five stars, I absolutely would—this stay was unforgettable, and so much of that is thanks to MARIO! From the moment we arrived at Basilio 55 Rome, Mario made us feel completely at home. He is, without question, the heart and soul of this place. Warm, attentive, and genuinely invested in making our stay exceptional—he went above and beyond in every way. Traveling as a family of four (my husband, two teenage daughters, and myself), we quickly realized after our first night that one room was a bit tight. Without hesitation, Mario stepped in and arranged an additional room for our daughters, which completely transformed our stay and allowed us all to relax and enjoy our time in Rome comfortably. That level of care is rare and so appreciated. The location is absolutely perfect—truly one of the best parts of staying here. We were able to walk everywhere, which made exploring Rome feel effortless and immersive. Mario also provided fantastic recommendations for restaurants, cocktails, coffee, and of course, gelato—every suggestion was spot on and elevated our entire trip. As for the hotel itself, it is charming, thoughtfully designed, impeccably clean, and an incredible value for the location. It strikes that perfect balance of boutique style and comfort. We left Rome already talking about our return—and there is no question where we’ll be staying. Basilio 55 is now “our place” in Rome, and Mario is a big reason why. Highly, highly recommend!

Cafe next door was terrific and we were walking distance to Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. There is a Metro Station right down the block that connects to the Vatican and Termini Station. Very convenient!!
- Joseph (10/5): - We stayed at Basilio 55 for 5 nights, and it turned out to be just right for us. The hotel is tucked away on a quiet side street just up from Piazza Barberini, making it a peaceful yet convenient base for exploring Rome. The quirky little lift to the upper floors was quite a novelty — cosy, but it added to the charm! Our room was clean and tidy with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom, while a little “tired” in places, was spotless and the shower always provided plenty of hot water. A big thank you to Mario, the hotel manager, who was extremely helpful throughout our stay. He assisted us in booking tickets for the Vatican, the Colosseum, and the Green Line hop-on hop-off bus — things I really should have arranged before our trip. The location was excellent, with a Metro station right at the bottom of the street. At just €1.30 per trip using contactless payment, it was incredibly easy and convenient to get around the city. Overall, we had a lovely stay. As part of an Expedia package with flights, it was also very reasonably priced. Thanks again for all your help and advice, Mario!

- Susan (7/5): Unfortunately I would not stay at this property again. - Two bedrooms and two baths. Had to have 3 keys to get into room. Blew a fuse plugging my charger in. A/C didn’t work well, nor did the one shower with very little pressure.

- Anonymous (10/5): Wonderful authentic Roman bedroom in a central location with friendly, helpful staff - The staff were helpful and facilitated a late check in for us plus a transfer from the airport. The bedroom was very grand and had lovely little beds for the children next to ours, it was cozy and just what we all needed after full days exploring Rome.

They did switch me to twin beds but the room was beyond basic and very small. Not at all what I paid for I was not offered any refund for the deluxe room I purchased. Despite this, I would still recommend the hotel due to the location.

The area feels safe and lively, with great restaurants and shops nearby. Room: The room was clean, stylish, and comfortable, with a spacious bed and modern amenities. The air conditioning worked well, which was a big plus in the summer heat. Breakfast: Simple but satisfying – fresh pastries, coffee, and juice. Not a full buffet, but enough to start the day.

We called and were disconnected multiple times because the wi-fi and cell service was spotty because of the 'old building'. We were given instructions over the phone that were confusing because we needed to access a lock box and the room numbers weren't visible. After 40 minutes someone came to let us in. The key didn't work easily. 2 of the 4 pillows had stuffing instead of a pillow. The toiletries were sub-par and not labeled because the container was old and worn. The ride to the airport was posted on the site as 60 euros but we were charged 75. I asked for a refund and cancellation at check in because of all the issues but was told no.

Additionally, the cleanliness was also good. One aspect I did not appreciate was the check-in experience. As a solo traveler, I was initially offered a smaller room than the one I had booked. The host/property manager explained that the room I reserved could better accommodate a couple who had expressed interest in it. While I was open to the idea, I asked whether there would be a price difference between the two rooms. After some hesitation, the host admitted there was, but instead offered complimentary breakfast in lieu of a price adjustment. However, he neither disclosed the exact price difference nor provided any transparent evidence of the rate discrepancy. I explained that I wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the breakfast due to time constraints, and requested a different form of compensation, which was declined. Ultimately, I was checked into the room I originally booked. This interaction reminded me of several similar reviews I had read beforehand, in which guests described being offered smaller rooms or even downgraded without prior notice. While this did not ultimately impact my stay, I believe it’s important for future guests to be aware and proactive in confirming room details and associated costs. Another issue I encountered was with the luggage storage. Prior to my arrival, I contacted the property to confirm that I could store my luggage after check-out and was told this would be possible. However, when the time came, I was simply asked to leave my bag in a corner near the reception desk and was told it would be remover later to a more secure area, but upon returning two hours later, I found it still in the same place, unattended. Given the automatic entry door and the reception’s proximity to the entrance, this arrangement felt quite insecure. Fortunately, I had not left anything of value in the bag, but it did raise concerns about safety and proper handling of guests' belongings.

- Line325 (8/5): Holidays in Rome - Great location, can walk to Trevi fountain or Spanish steps within 15 mins. Close to many good restaurants. 2 mins walk from metro station. Staffs are friendly and helpful. We need both keys and passwords to enter the building and room. That makes us feel secured. Our family room has enough room for parents with 2 young kids and one big suitcase. If we are all 4 adults, it'll be quite tight (one of the bed is shorter). There are also some lounge areas and terrace which give us space when kids are sleeping. We can use the TV for streaming YouTube. Free WiFi works well. Overall the room had great value and we enjoyed the stay. There's nothing to complaint. Only suggestion: can have bigger rubbish bins in the room. But we put our big rubbish directly to the bin in the building.

He was exceptionally helpful throughout our visit, always making sure we had everything we needed. As travelers from the USA, we truly appreciated his extra care and attention. The Hotel’s location is also a major plus. It’s conveniently located near the main train station, and the hop on hop off Big bus, making sightseeing a breeze. Plus, the iconic Trevi fountain is just a pleasant walk away. We highly recommend this hotel for its excellent service and prime location.

- Luleadey (2/5): A shabby place - The location is good. Angelica, the receptionist, is extremely nice and polite. She’s probably what has given the place some life. Otherwise, the room we stayed in was super small and rundown. The elevator is so small that it hardly fits two people. What is worse, the basin is indescribably small and when the tap is turned on, water flows everywhere (it also leaks)! Regarding cleanliness, it’s extremely shabby. When we asked for our room to be cleaned, they only attempted to make the bed, but even that was so poorly done. If you only looking for the proximity of the hotel to the center, go for it. Otherwise, it’s not worth your money. Watch out!

- Fernando (8/5): For the price we had a good stay - Mario at the front desk was extremely courteous and helpful. He recommended places to visit during our stay and nearby eateries as well. Rome is a big city and he definitely made us feel welcomed. The location was near the metro and was within walkable distances to restaurants, small shops, the Spanish steps and Trevi fountain, roughly half a mile from the hotel. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. TV was not working, but not a huge deal.

Rooms are plenty big enough, well maintained and cleaned daily. The location is excellent with lots of bars and restaurants nearby. A great authentic local breakfast cafe just across the piazza. In just a few minutes you can walk to Trevi! The property has a small elevator that is manually operated. Unfortunately on two of our four nights other guest failed to close the doors leaving the elevator stuck on that floor, and we had to walk up. This may be a problem for less able guests. Absolutely this isn’t the fault of the hotel, but inconsiderate guests.

The place was extremely convenient location and literally a stone throwaway from the Metro Station. Bathroom was in horrendous shape. Mold was everywhere, black and pink. The toilet leaked at the base if flushed more than once or twice in a few hours. Mold was by the entry door as well. Nothing felt clean. Room was clearly minimally taken care of. One bed was shoved halfway under a desk. Housekeeping never took out the trash in our time there. Subpar at best.

- Igor (3/5): Very overrated hotel with minimal standards. - 1- The hotel location was not obvious to find in the documentation so we got to the wrong address at first. 2- The hotel is in a Limited Trafic Zone (ZTL) and we were never told about it by the hotel, therefore a camera flasshed our license plate and got a ticket of 90€ for passing in front of the hotel. The Hotel should have warned us before ti get there. When we told the manager he never took responsibility and said it's our problem. 3- The elevator is old style, therefore very small so we had to make three trips for two people with 1 luggage each and carry-on and purse per person. I have no problem with that but tell the client before getting there. 4- The bathroom was not with the room but in the hallway. You could see that it use to be an appartment converted in hotel. 5- The bathroom and hallway had a bad smell of mold as if someone took a shower and humidity was trapped. 6- The girl at the reception had a very strong indian accent therefore very difficult to understand both in italian and english (I am italian) and was totally incompetent. She did not know much about her hotel and would just know the basic check-in & out pricedure. At the end of the staying said she had graduated 6 months prior. She should have told us about the restricted ZTL street. 7- During the ckeck-in procedure and explanation, she forgot about our passports in the copying machine and when we realized it, the front desk area was closed therefore no access to the photocoly machine where out passports were. 8- At night no staff was available.

All tourist attractions where of walking distance if you didn’t mind a 30 minute walk. When we got back to the room after site seeing we went to get into bed and the sheet was dirty. We were told it wasn’t dirty it was just old but that wasn’t the case, it was disgusting. We were told nothing could be done until the next morning but we refused to sleep in the bed as it was that bad.

The room was warm and comfy, private bathroom was good with shower, toilet and sink. Hotel was in a really good location, only 10/15 minutes walk to Spanish steps and trevi fountain, 25/30 minute walk to colosseum and 50 minute walk to Vatican City. Lots of lovely restaurants to walk to. Weather was not hot so did not have to use air con.

We thought breakfast was included had one croissant and then owner hit us with a 18euro bill for a croissant. would have got out and got one for a euro - albeit it was our mistake but also felt like another charge the hotel could not wait to give. on booking.com booked a room with a bath and paid for it and this was not what we got when we arrived - “subject to availability”
- Ffion (1/5): Bad - The location was a good location central to everything. However the hotel stay was awful. We arrived at the property which was advertised as “Facilities for disabled guests” my partner being a full time wheelchair user this was extremely important. I had previously emailed the hotel to confirm that my partner was in a wheelchair and having the facilities was very important. On arrival we were met by a step. (Not a great start) but lifted him over the step to speak to the receptionist to check in. On this check in we were asked if we could collapse the wheelchair to fit in the lift, also if my partner could get up the stairs. Which was absolutely not possible with him being paralysed. They then went on to say that they had no room for us and that we were not going to get a refund. This resulted in back and forth conversation with the manager being called on the phone. He refused to help. The best they could offer us was a room down stairs which we had to pay extra for. This room was up a step. The room was not accessible, had only a shower over a bath which again my partner could not access. No grab rails. A bed which was so high it was not transferable for my partner. He had to sleep on a small single bed which was definitely a children’s bed. The hotel is not wheelchair friendly, the hotel manager is extremely rude and very unhelpful. I have made a complaint with booking.com and he was even rude to the lady from booking who called up about this issue resulting in him hanging up the phone. The hotel room we stayed in also had mould in it. The plug for the bath was to small so wouldn’t hold the water. I would avoid this hotel at all costs.

Super close to everything you need! Lots of maintenance and upkeep issues. Not the most luxurious spot, but it gets the job done for a place to stay close to the Rome hotspots!

Another staff member said that they could not reserve us a car in off hours, which was before 7:30 am or after 9:30 pm.

- Alkiviadou (2/5): Not a double bed! Tooo small! - If you respect yourself and the money you pay I suggest choosing another hotel. The room fits one and was given as a double room. The duvet is also for one! The 2nd person covers with the duvet cover but no filling! The washbasin is max 25cm diameter, all the water is out and around. You can hardly wash your face. The room very small, not easy to move around. One has to lie on bed for the other to walk just around the bed. There is an elevator. It fits only one person! The breakfast area is quite good. The cheese was dry, maybe left long time in the tray. Coffee was good and the cornetto was fresh. The room cleaning consisted of just emptying the bin! Good location but that’s it.

No upkeep at all with scratches all over the walls, faucets that don't work and everything is just worn and old. Also, if you arrive after 9:30pm be prepared to wait on the street for at least 30 minutes while they come from somewhere else to open up for you. And you'll be charged 20 euros per hour for arrivals after 9:30pm. (their website says free late check-ins). Manager is very rude too. Just do yourself a favor and stay away from this place

As this was a separate bathroom (outside of the bedroom with a common walkway), it made it very hard to cool down or air out the smell. There was no mirror in the main bedroom, which required getting ready in the bathroom (which as noted above was not pleasant). Besides this, the staff were lovely and the hotel was in a great location.

- YUMENG (2/5): - I shouldn't trust the review score. After encountering ridiculous issues at this hotel, I checked the reviews and found everything was mentioned before. And I may find the reason is the manager only cares charging guests extra fees and cutting costs wherever possible 1st, The cleanliness makes me keep feeling disgusted whenever I think I have slept there, and this also made it hard to get asleep. Multiple hairs on the bed once I arrive, which made me doubt whether they have changed the sheet. Also manager, there is so much waste under the toilet rim. Can you please spend some money to hire someone to clean the toilet not only in the most visible areas? 2nd, You can not arrive after 9:30pm. The late fee is 20 euros/hour, but the hours does not depend on you, but depends on when the manager will arrive! So if he is delayed, be ready to pay 100 euros to just get in. I arrived at 10:05pm and called the manager, he said "you have to type in expedia you accept the late fee, otherwise I won't come". I typed but he could not see, so I waited 1 hour in the unsafe dark. When he arrived, he charged me 40 euros because he was late for 1.5 hours?! I had no choice at that late. 3rd, the hotel is in disrepair. The manager and I entered the room and the toilet bowl kept running water which was really noisy. He refused to change the room. I can not get asleep, until 2-hour waiting outside at next day noon for repair. And no compensation!

The hot water in the shower lasted only a minute and did not get any better after I reflected the problem with the reception, which made my sick physical condition even worse. Plus my girlfriend can't even take a shower on a hot summer night because of it. It's a very basic problem and the hotel didn't get it right.

- Michela (4/5): - Cons- I was very disappointed with the hotel overall, and felt that it is not worth the approximate $200 a night we paid. To begin with, our room was poorly lit...we barely had any light. The bathroom was old and dirty...hardly any shower pressure...and a lack of hot water. The worst part was that the air conditioner didn't seem to work properly. The hotel itself is old, poorly maintained and falling apart, it could use a paint job, and definitely some major renovations especially the bathrooms. Pros- The employees I did come across were kind and quite helpful. We met the manager as we checked out and he was so nice, very helpful and gave us some great tips about our travels. Additionally, the hotel is an amazing location as you are pretty much in walking distance to everything.

They gave us coupons for a free breakfast but didn’t mention we were not allowed to eat fruit. We took a fruit and on departure they charged us 5€ saying that there coupon is only available for 1 croissant and 1 coffee. It was dishonest considering the poor breakfast choice. There wasn’t even enough croissants for everyone! The bed were ok but the washroom smelled like humidity and wasn’t really clean. (Mole) Angelika was the nicest person to work there. They are lucky to have her, she was a great help for information.

- Tara (2/5): - Had to check out of this hotel straight away, when I arrived the room smelt of cigarette smoke, they said it was a non smoking room but I could see neighbouring rooms and people were smoking out the windows. Our beds were camp beds. Worst of all and the reason I didn’t sleep the whole night was the air conditioning machine was ancient, only cooled the room by about 2 degrees and made a really loud rattling sound all night. I spoke to the staff about it, but they really didn’t care and wouldn’t refund any of my up front payment for our stay. We moved to a much nicer hotel. This was the worst hotel I stayed in Rome from my many trips.

As soon as we got in we noticed the toilet leaking, sewage smell in the bathroom, the trash cans had not been emptied from the previous people who stayed(bodily fluids), the floors were filthy, the bath tub to walk into the shower was hazardous especially stepping out, we got locked OUT of our bathroom by shutting the door and it locked on us and to top it off there was BLACK MOLD ABOVE THE WINDOW. 0/10 will never be back
