Guest Reviews
- Claudio (8/5): Napoli. - Ottima posizione per visitare centro storico e pizzerie, zona tranquilla e sicura anche di sera
- ableuer (2/5): Stay the hell away from this hotel - Upon arrival at the hotel, the receptionist informed us that the hotel couldn't accept credit cards, even though its page on booking.com said it did accept. We didn't have enough cash with us, so we asked if we could pay them later. He said that he wouldn't give us the key unless we paid first, and pointed us to an ATM. The ATM was at a 10 minute walk from the hotel, and when we arrived there it was not functioning, so we had to walk for 1 hour around Naples and try to find a working one.
After we got back, they had already booked our room to SOMEONE ELSE, after making us walk to an ATM so we could pay them! According to them, they thought we wouldn't come back, even though we had a reservation and they knew we had gone to the ATM. This was unbeliavable, they were so hungry to make money that they left two people with a reservation on the street with nowhere to go.
Also, as if this wasn't unbelievable enough, the receptionist had a beer breath when he first talked to us!
Seriously, stay away from this crappy place. There are many hotels in Naples with the same price and better facilities, and with actual professionals in charge of the place.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Bien situado - Bien situado. Esta limpio pero hace frio. Solo ponen la calefacción dos horas por la tarde.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great city center location! - The hotel is in the heart of Naples near the best pizza restaurant, Trianon Del Ciro. The room is not fancy nor does it need to be. It has all that is needed for a pleasant stay. The room was cleaned daily, hotel staff are friendly, caring and helpful guides. We quite enjoyed the location and will likely return.
- Aurore (6/5): Bon rapport qualité/prix - Not the greatest place to stay. It's cheap and you can understand why (it's quite old) but the bed was confortable and the room clean. It's a bit noisy from the outside (well it's Napoli...) but we managed to sleep well. Very old tv that the receptionist didn't want to fix but he lended me a hairdryer when I asked for one. Decent hotel if you're on a budget. However, we didn't enjoy this part of Napoli.
- cristiana (6/5): - No ac only fan.. Part time reception...
- Verified traveler (6/5): Relativ Zentral gelegenes kleines Hotel. - Vom Hotel aus kann Palermo sehr gut erkundet werden. Ein Auto wird nicht benötigt.
Meine Frau und ich waren drei Tage dort und konnten sehr viel von der Stadt sehen.
- Swapnil (8/5): Nice clean hotel, but in an old building - The hotel is great from the inside with clean rooms and friendly staff. The building from outside is really old, but once you get in its okay.
The hotel is located near the Duomo and Via dei tribunali, which boasts of most of the city's good eating joints. Also walking distance from the train station and ferry station.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Neapel erleben - Optimale Lage für Stadtausflüge.Mitten im historischen Zentrum. Metro in 10 min erreichbar. Einfache, zweckmäßige Ausstattung. Sehr freundliches und zuvorkommendes Personal. Kein Luxus, aber "Echtes Neapel" in der Umgebung.
- Ivan (6/5): hotel review - Hotel with good location in the middle of Naples - walk distance to the train station and to the castle as well.
Friendly staff, clean room, great value for money.
- cedrich_11 (6/5): Excellent location, good welcome - My friend and I chose this pensione for its superb location on the edge of the centro storico and for its very good room rate. The scruffy courtyard you go through is a bit off-putting, but once you've climbed to the high first floor (no lift), all is OK. The welcome was friendly and efficient; we did have to pay in cash but I had received an email a few days earlier to this effect, so that was not a problem. The spacious room and en suite bath were clean, and cleaned each day of our 3-night stay. Completely fine, without frills, if you want to be close to all the delights of the old city and within walking distance of almost everything else most tourists would want to see.
- Gabby (6/5): Good hotel, location not ideal - The hotel was good; great staff, very clean (rooms were cleaned every day). The hotel is in a courtyard, so we felt very safe and secure. The hotel was a little old and smelt of damp, and could do with a little facelift, but for the price it had all the basics. Room was very spacious and had its own bathroom which was great for the price.
The only thing that let's it down is the location, which is unfortunate for the hotel. We thought the historical part of the town would be beautiful, however we were very wrong. The place is completely run down, dirty and graffitied. I would not recommend going out alone at night. But, the hotel felt very safe and was only a 15 minute walk from the newer part of the town and the sea front, which we much preferred.
- HarrisD_13 (2/5): Very unpleasant experience - My wife and I booked this hotel after using the Rough guide book as reference for 4 days from the 30/12/13 to 03/01/14. We provided our credit card details when we booked. THe hotel has no lift even though it is on the first floor. On arrival we were curtly informed that we were to pay in cash for the 4 days in advance when there was no mention in either Rough guide or when booking on line! We only had cash for one night and told them we will return with cash for the other 3 nights. On return we told that the room was only available for one night and no longer available!! The double room was dingy and was glad to left after one night. People with luggage should beware. It was a very unpleasant experience. We were nearly penalised by Hotel.com as no show by the hotel through no fault of our own. Hotel. com apologised when they discovered the error. We have photos that my wife took. The TV was even not working. The toilet flush was not working.
- swanlanded (2/5): sleeping next to Niagra - What can we say, we didn't sleep due to our en suite bathroom toilet spewing out water all night. The sound was something like sleeping next to a waterfall. Due to the early closure of the reception we could only complain the next morning. The one worded apology was just not enough and his attitude was as if it was our fault. Stay elsewhere!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Excellent staff, very friendly and helpful, good English, would recommend to any US travelers
- bvas (2/5): Lovely apart from the insects - The service, room and bathroom here were all good and represented excellent value for money. The hotel is also in a good central location. However the bed was riddled with bed bugs so we had to leave after one night. We received a full refund - including for the night we stayed - and have been assured by email that they have solved the problem. We have never had to leave a hotel for this reason before and for this reason I have no choice but to give it a one star rating
- Verified traveler (8/5): Duomo Hotel - From other reviews I was expecting much worse! Hotel was a little difficult to find at first because it was off a courtyard. That said it was quiet and clean. The rooms were large, high and airy.
Not desperately close to anywhere we wanted to go, but only a few minutes walk from the Main Railway Station. We absolutely hated the Piazza Garibaldi and Naples is the only place I've ever been where I felt safer in the back streets than the main road! That's hardly the hotel's fault though. There was a security gate at night and my daughter and I felt perfectly safe.
Don't know if it would be a good place for a person travelling alone and hoping to meet other people. We hardly saw the other guests.
- Mat_Brown_11 (10/5): Straightforwardly excellent central Naples hotel - The Duomo is ideally placed in the old town. Staff polite, helpful and excellent English spoken. Rooms much larger than could be expected for the price and bed very comfortable. Unexpectedly upgraded to a larger room on our second trip after travelling around the south. And most unexpected - the rooms were unbelievably quiet for the central location. Great place.
- Erin (4/5): Very basic - If you are looking for a very basic hotel and a decent bed for the night, then this hotel may be what you're after, although I wouldn't suggest spending any more time in the hotel during the day/night than necessary as I didn't find it relaxing.
The TV in the room didn't work, though I admit we didn't bother approaching reception about it and there was no fridge to store our drinks, but we made do.
The area wasn't great (there was a lot of rubbish in the streets) and we didn't find a great deal of restaurants or cafe's to eat in, but it was in an easy walking distance to the metro and about a 15 minute walk from Garibaldi station which was a bonus.
The hotel shares it's building with some residential flats and the first night there we had problems sleeping, as a flat above decided to have a party with what seemed like a DJ stereo booming from about half 10 until 4 in the morning.
On an end note, the staff were friendly and the room was clean, so apart from a sleepless first night, we pretty much got what we paid for.
- sheepdog_guy (8/5): The charm of Napoli - This hotel is pretty much what we expected for the very low rates. We took a cab from Garibaldi station (a surprisingly expensive ride for the distance) and he pointed our where the hotel was or else we would have had a tough time finding it as others have mentioned. Look for the Albergo Duomo sign outside the building. The street looks rough, but that's just Naples. We never felt unsafe.
Inside, the two fellows who were alternately at the reception desk were plenty friendly and answered a few questions but we didn't really ask too much from them. The lobby areas was surprisingly nice after questioning the outside of the building. The room was spacious and in good enough shape. Everything was clean. The bathroom had some mold around the shower, but nothing terrifying. The shower that would barely drain was annoying. The temperature was fine in September with just the ceiling fan. And the room was surprisingly quiet.
Naples pizza can't be beat and any sit-down pizzeria will be good. Other dishes are just ok. There are plenty of restuarants around Garibaldi station, which is pretty lively in the evening. There are lots of cafes near the hotel. Despite the look of the area, safety was never a concern.
In all, it's tough to find a lot to complain about.
- I_am_de_La_Condamine (4/5): Pensione Duomo, Hotel Duomo, Allegro Duomo? Whatever this place is called, either way its impossible to find - Finding this hotel was a problem in itself, it’s only sign is a very small plaque hidden on the side of an archway, what you need to look for is a sign saying Allegro Duomo hovering over a dark alleyway. We must have spent a good half an hour searching the streets for it, and don’t expect the locals to help out much we didn’t find a single one who’d even heard of The Hotel Duomo.
The reception is up two flights of stairs and without a lift in sight you’ll have to drag your cases up there yourself.
Having seen the rooms on the website and having read the Rough Guides reveiw I was actually quite looking forward to our stay here, unfortunately I was to be disappointed in almost every way. The rooms themselves were fine but it was obvious that a refit had been done recently, but done cheaply and not very well. From a photograph it all looks rather superb but spend anytime there and you literally start to see the cracks.
Only two of the rooms have AC and our room was one that didn’t, it was however serviced by an electric ceiling fan, but that wasn’t nearly effective enough in the heat of the summer. The rooms themselves were a good size and the beds were comfortable enough but the walls in places had mortar falling out and the plugs were obviously from before the refit and didn’t feel as safe as they should.
The Rough Guides’ statement that most rooms look out over a tranquil courtyard is hugely inaccurate, even if your room did look out over the courtyard what you would see is far from tranquil: dark, dingy and depressing would prehaps be more accurate descriptions. Our room didn’t look into the courtyard but infact into a narrow alley on the otherside of the hotel and having the window open, on account of the oppressive heat in the room, meant that we would often be disturbed by shouting, loud scooters or hit by unpleasant smells emanating from below.
The room itself was kept clean and tidy, but the bathroom on the other hand wasn’t kept to the same standard. The shower cubical didn’t appear to have been properly cleaned from one day to the next and as a consequence mould was present in unpleasant quantities. With the shower turned on it would take about two mintues for the basin to fill and start to overflow bringing with it an overwhelming smell of sewage. When we mentioned it to the person behind reception he didn’t seem particularly suprised or interested but said he would sort it out for us. He may well have done something to sort it out but it only made a small amount of difference but at least it meant we could have a shower.
There is a TV in the room but with a screen size of about 8” you would have to sit ontop of it before you could see the picture, but as I’ve said before you don’t go on holiday to watch TV.
The internet is available but it will cost you a fortune, you can either use their Wi-Fi at €10 for 24 hours or use the computer in the lobby at €5 for an hour. I needed to use it so I had to give them €10 for which I got a hand written slip of paper with a code on it (well worth the money I think you’ll agree) and an internet connection that occasionally cut off.
The lobby area has a drinks machine (which was off the whole time we were there) a large TV, some books, an XBOX 360 and a chess set. You get the impression its geared towards young backpackers as an area for them to hang out but it lacks any vibe and in all the time we were there we didn’t meet a single other traveller.
Being almost opposite the Duomo the hotel’s street is horrendous, walking down it is a health risk and to try and drive your car up it is to dice with death. I would VERY STRONGLY suggest against bringing a car to Naples, everything you have ever read about how bad the driving is doesn’t come close to the reality of it.
The staff were not particularly helpful and of all the advice we received it was almost all entirely useless, from the car parks that didn’t exist to the street full of restaurants that all turned out to be take aways. They also refused to keep the booking for 4 nights I had made 3 months before unless I pay the full amount straight away, we were €20 short so I asked if I could give them that and then the last €20 in the morning. They said we would have to pack all our things, vacate the room and go to reception each morning to see if our room was still available for us to move back in unless we paid the full amount - remember though that I had already booked these nights 3 months ago. It wasn’t a problem to get together €20 but it was the owners attitude and his ridiculous suggestion that left a lasting impression.
It is certainly not the worse hotel I have stayed in but I would not recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Naples, for the price you pay you can rightly expect much more. So long as you book early enough you should be able to find similar priced hotels in the same area without too much problem.
- dhkatz (8/5): Very clean and a great value - Given the great rate we got at this hotel, I was really surprised by the value. The rooms were large and clean with hard floors. Only drawbacks: no A/C, no breakfast served, and the surrounding streets/alley can be loud even at night, but if you close the window it isn't that bad. Definitely an all around great choice in the historical center.
- nat149 (8/5): Great Location in Naples - Hotel Duomo was a convenient hotel for the historic district. Very close to the Duomo and other sites. It was also very convenient to the train station. The room was mediocre but comfortable, and looks just like what you would think from the pictures.
I didn't find the hotel hard to find at all. Before I went there, I just looked at the street view on Google Earth, and then you know what to expect the outside to look like. From what I learned of Naples, most of it looks old and run-down, but that is just the charm of the city.
Overall, Hotel Duomo was a great value that I would recommend to travelers who want a nice place to sleep on a budget!
***I would highly recommend going to "Da Michele" (a pizza restaurant) while in Naples. Best pizza I have ever had!
- Dr. F. (8/5): Good value hotel in Naples - Hotel Duomo provides good value for a basic, no frills hotel in a convenient location
- makoli (6/5): good value for little money - we stayed here for 3 nights and felt quiet comfortable. the rooms are spacious though a bit dark, but thats a good thing if you have 30 degrees outside. we were also surprised that no noise from outside was to hear.
staff was friendly enough and bathroom, beds, floors clean. a lil fungus was in our shower but its taken care of. they change towels and sheets everyday.
can recommend and wil stay there again when in naples.
- zampedimare (4/5): Well located, but truly uncomfortable - I stayed here with two others for a total of five nights. While the hotel is well located, very close to the all the important sites, it is very dark, dusty (my allergies went crazy), gloomy and the cleanliness was definitely questionable. Further, the quality of the service was poor. We felt like we were pulling teeth every time we wanted a bit of info (in English AND Italian). I would not recommend this place.
- hikerchick10 (6/5): Bad experience, but not ALL hotel's fault - We booked this hotel through CheapTickets.com. Big mistake! We were only staying there for one night and flying home the next day. We arrived at the hotel at about 7:30pm to realize our worst nightmare--Duomo Hotel did not have our reservation. Despite providing them with proof of payment, the staff person made little effort to work things out for us. He stated that he had never even heard of CheapTickets.com and did not even try and call them to verify the situation. So, here we were at this late hour with no reservation. They had one room left and when I reached for my credit card, he stated that I needed to pay by cash--which we had next to none of at this point. We were forced to go to an ATM machine at 8pm at night in order to pay for our room (again!!!). The only reason I didn't rate this hotel lower is because the room was a really big size for 65 euro--so it was a decent value for the money. This rate gets you a TV, but no other frills. In fact, our wake up call was via a knock on our door. Due to our experience, I personally would not stay here again.
- MardyLardy (8/5): Hard to find but good spot when you do - Good location for all the Centrico sights, shopping and restaurants. Walked from Garibaldi Sq having arrived by train, which was not too strenuous. Luckily I'd used Google streetview before arriving, otherwise I'd have walked straight past the place, which is poorly signed and is tucked away at the back of a gated courtyard. The room was a bit sparse and dingy, but clean and comfortable. Small TV with terrible reception. Average overall.
- NO8DO (8/5): Excellent location and value - This hotel also goes by the name Hotel Duomo and Albergo Duomo. Whatever it's name, the hotel is very well located for tourism and for night-life. It's on a street that is quiet, clean and well-lit (apparently very rare things in Naples). We certainly did not feel even remotely unsafe walking around at night. The hotel is at the back of an interior courtyard and so there was little noise from the street. The room was very large and immaculately clean. It and the rest of the hotel seem to have been recently renovated in a way that might be charming were it not that the furniture is a bit spartan. There's no luxury then but the location and the value are enough to highly recommend Pensione Duomo based on our experience.
- singoLiverpool (6/5): Nice, basic, cheap hotel for visiting naples - If you are planning to visit Naples, this is a cheap and convenient hotel to stay in. The guys on reception all speak really good english and are willing to call taxis and help with sight seeing. Taxi is about 25 euros from the airport. It is about a 10 min walk from the central station through piazza garibaldi (which is disgusting). Would recommend if your on a budget.
- Mike (4/5): Ubderstand where you are going - Essentially this is a one star which meant for me that in my room the air conditioning and safe were broken (though I didn't need them), the heating was not on (which I definitely needed), the shower overflowed, the toilet is half way under the sink, the TV didn't work properly and needs two remotes and there is nowhere to make tea or coffee. The room lighting is not great and the lounge area is barren - however it is quiet and seems clean. The bed was a single bed with old blankets (two single beds in the room at right angles to each other). I was frozen the first night and I got bitten a few times by something on the last night - in fairness I did have the windows open. The cost seemed high for what it is and the season. I paid less for a fantastic five star hotel in Valletta, Malta the week before. Yes it's near everything but frankly so much is run down and dirty that you lose the will to want to visit them. It is near the central bus and train stations and I went out to Pompei, Herculaneum and Sorrento which was the real reason for my visit. So for going somewhere else it is fine. At night some of the cut through areas between the hotel and the centre are definitely dodgy - use the main road. I was on my own and have backpacked in many places - quite a few a lot worse than this (but then I was paying a pittance) so I am prepared to rough it. My wife, however, would not have wanted to stay there.
- donatKalamata (10/5): Great hotel, location, value of money, the friendliest staff!!! - I would strongly recommended this hotel to anyone who wants to explore the city of Naples for five reasons:
1) The location: it's situated in the most strategic point, 10 minutes walk from the train station on via Duomo, a nice and safe street with many coffee and pastry shops where you can taste the real espresso, cappuccino and the tasty Neapolitan sweets (try sfogliatella, babba and pastiera). It;s situated inside the old town and all the great attractions are in a walkable distance. Nearby you can find the churches and the streets of the centro storico, the Archaeological Museum with the treasures of Pompey and Ercolanum and the tastiest pizza you can ever dream...
2) The prices: I went there at Christmas 2008 for five days alone, I slept in a room for two and I payed 45 euro per night.
3) The place: It's located on the second floor of a 18th century palazzo. The interior is fine and simple decorated and contains nice clean rooms with bathroom, suitable for young people, with free internet point in the living room. Of course don't expect any luxuries, the hotel doesn't offer parking services (very difficult in Naples) or breakfast (just go to the bar opposite the street and you would have sweets and coffee of high quality for 2,50 euro).
4) The hotel guys: from the first moment I was impressed by the welcoming of the staff. Especially Luiggi is extreme friendly with humor, a true young Neapolitan. He is also very willing to give information, to answer any question and to make any discussion with you for anything you want to know about the city (also in English).
5) -the most important- The city itself: Naples is magical, wonderful, full of life, history, tradition, sounds, tastes, images and art treasures. Τhere is a large quantity of museums, old churches, castles, catacombs, palaces and panoramas, so that I couldn' t see them all in five days. But most of all I loved the life in the streets of the old neighborhoods and of the town center. The picturesque scenes you may have seen in the old Italian films here is REALITY! You should live suspicions and fear behind, take only the usual care, get in the rhythm of the local people and the city would reward you generously.
I am sure I will be back!!!
- Mythicalsoul (8/5): Great room for good value - After climbing the steps, we checked in and were impressed with the room. Very modern and set up nicely. We only stayed here one night, so not too much input.
The shower was dirty as was the cover on the bed(hairs and all, but no stains). Other than that have no complaints.
The staff held our luggage as we went to Pompeii, but it was placed in the common area where many ppl could have access. Regardless, nothing went missing and there was quite a bit of luggage there.
Definitely would stay here again, as we only paid 50 Euro for the night.
No breakfast included though.
- MTO11 (8/5): Very Nice Simple Hotel - Hotel was in a good location and staff was very nice, Rooms were basic but clean and had everything you need. You do have to bring luggage up about 40 steps to get into hotel...
- NCHawkeye (6/5): good value but noisy - This was adequate for our overnight stay enroute from Pompeii to a flight from Naples to Catania. The room was very large. it was clean and functional.
- perrymiles (10/5): Duomo is excellent - We chose this hotel based on TripAdvisor reviews because it was close to the the train station and we wanted a friendly, helpful staff. The negatives (non-draining showers, sketchy neighborhood) were not too bad. We really were pleased; in fact we stayed there again on our return trip through Naples. The staff was very friendly and very helpful as advertised. The shower drains were OK. The neighborhood was fine, no problem. Not small town America, but fine. Great, inexpensive restaurant (Carmine) around the corner a ways. The place is hard to see from the street, but it's worth looking for. Good hotel, great value.
