- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great location very close to Kings Cross station. Check in was via the hospital next door and was easy enough. Overall hotel is tired and grubby - there were piles of dirty linen on each floor by the stairs when we arrived at 9pm.

- Stephen (4/5): Tiny, very tiny - I stayed there for one night because I had an early-morning train from King's Cross. This place has the smallest rooms I've seen. They've squeezed in every millimetre of accommodation space: the shower is over the toilet, the bed occupies so much of the room there's barely space for a backpack (certainly not for a suitcase), the halls are narrower than a normal person's shoulders. The reception desk is three buildings away. It's clean and the receptionist is professional, but the building is ridiculously cramped.

- Verified traveler (8/5): Pretty good - We actually dealt with the Hotel Melville. There are many small hotels all in a row next to each other, all near the King's Cross train station, and some of them seem related to each other, perhaps under the same administration or ownership. As we were four persons with a lot of baggage, we were actually assigned a place around the corner called Flat No. 1. The staff were very considerate in putting us there, because we needed the room. The flat was in the basement but had its own entrance by a stairway down from the street and was huge. We had two bedrooms with two double beds. The bedding was fresh and clean and the beds comfortable. The flat appeared to be freshly cleaned as well as possible. There was also a kitchen with a long computer workstation with lots of plug-ins, and there were lots of various kinds of outlets in the bedrooms. The only complaints were that there seemed to be a small amount of mold around the light fixture in the bathroom, which was otherwise well cleaned, and the kitchen faucet dripped. On the whole, however, it was a nice place for tired travelers.
- James (8/5): Excelsior - Business Trip - I was a little bit nervous of the location - dodgy looking park over the road. KX & St Pan just 200 yds away - loads of eateries & new bars. Overall a pleasant enough experience at a reasonable price.

However, the hotel had no air conditioning and we were located on top floor which was 6 flights on narrow steps especially when packing luggage. No breakfast was included and WiFi strength was very poor. The bathroom was only big enough for one to turn around in. The bathroom ceiling appeared to have been duct taped in a spot above toilet? When we went to check out and we turned in key (yes they still had a key) the gentleman just looked at us. Not to mention the TV would not program in the room. The hotel was definitely overpriced for the room you would have expected

The bedding has lots of stains, even though it is washed (I hope). Just imagine staying at a cheap college dormitory where genders are not separated.

- Richard (2/5): True service shows when things go wrong - I'll start by saying that I've stayed with this group of hotels a couple of times before and its been OK, however on my stay this week things were very different... When I arrived on Tuesday evening they had lost my reservation. There was some scrabbling around and suggestions that a relation of mine had rung up to cancel (they hadn't). Eventually I was told I could stay in a flat they had nearby and have a room in the hotel the next day. It was a basement flat about 1/4mile away. They gave me a code and key for the doors to get in, when I got there the code didn't work. I had to ring the reception, it took about 10 mins for them to pick up and they then found the right code. Then the key didn't fit. Another phone call and this time I needed to wait for the receptionist to come over. When he let me into the flat it was well over an hour after I had first arrived at the hotel. The flat was basic, dark and damp. The TV didn't get a good enough signal to be able to watch and there was no wifi. Back at the hotel in the morning I asked about leaving my bag and I was told that it was fine, but there was no proper storage (I could see others just left in the hallway) and the receptionist wouldn't give me a receipt, so I kept my bag and said I expected some form of refund for the first night. I arrived back at the hotel in the evening to find that instead of finding me a room they had cancelled my reservation! So I was left at 7.30pm in London without a hotel... UNBELIEVABLE.
- Mark (4/5): Good for a night out not for families - We checked into our room late on a Saturday night and were given a room on the ground floor. The room itself is perfectly fine but sadly the noise outside meant we were unable to get much sleep. Location is excellent and if not for the noise I believe this hotel could be rated a lot higher. If you are on a night out and just need somewhere to crash late on I'm sure this would be perfect.

We have stayed there before for that reason. You get what you pay for, a modest room with basic en suite facilities. It was quiet and clean and the bed was very comfortable, but it was down very steep stairs. The owner agrees that the bathroom is due for an upgrade.

- Zak (6/5): Cheap, Perfect Location, Minor Problems - The hotel is litterally a 30 second walk from Kings cross station, ideal for travel anywhere in London. Few minor problems include the shower which you could run at either scolding hot or not at all as the water seemed to stop if you tried to turn it down, lack of tea/coffee in the morning despite their been a kettle in the room nothing was supplied and the blind not fully covering the window causing a mini Blackpool illuminations. In summary, cheap and cheerful with easy access to the rest of London, pros outweigh the cons.

- B (4/5): Excelsior Hotel King's Cross - Staff friendly, very informal check in process. ROOM IS MICROSCOPIC AND TOILET/SHOWER ROOM EVEN SMALLER. Ok for Hobbits but normal-sized humans just would not fit. No soap provided. No tea or coffee but had mugs and kettle. Note on door said tea/coffee pack available from reception but not clear if it cost extra. Fire emergency instructions incomplete - no fire escape at all! Basically a fire trap. A bit scary. Lots of fire extinguishers placed strategically on the stairs. Window would not latch as the handle was locked down. Blind was broken and had to be rolled up and down by hand.

- hannah (2/5): fraudulent!! - Booked this hotel as it said 2* On booking the conformation it said check in at another hotel which was a couple of stops down the road. on checking in we were asked to sign in. once we had signed in we were told that there was a problem with our room and they have booked us into another property at no extra cost. and we were told that is was a more expensive room! what a load of crap! on entering the other hotel I asked if the room was a quiet room, and I was told its one of the 'better rooms!' again, a load of crap. we were facing the street had homeless people asleep outside, noise all night and people shouting drinking outside. we were moved to another hotel with no star rating! seems that this hotel is scamming customers and using excuses that there is a problem with the room. we should have been informed prior to even getting to the hotel that no room was available and then to con us by getting us to sign our check in card and then move us! the area around the excelsior hotel is full of young people smoking drugs outside. lots of homeless and not at all anywhere you would feel safe. we booked this for a night stop before getting an early Eurostar - never again!

- Tina (2/5): Close to Eurostar. Got no sleep. - We were looking for a place at walking distance from the Eurostar we were planning to take from Paris that night. Didn't realize we would be making such a tremendous mistake. Cons: 1. Our room was on the third floor with no elevators and a very narrow stairway. Not suitable for travelers with large suitcases. 2. Rooms were caked with dust. Not sure when they last vacuumed the carpet. 3. Walls had stains and cracks. 4. No hot water to wash with. 5. Mattress is probably 20+ years old. Sinks in the middle, and jiggles at any movement. Sheets had hair on them. 6. We had to keep the window open as the room was so dusty in order to breathe. Sadly there was no screen, and outside noise went from a football game at 10pm to loud arguments at 3am. 7. Unsafe part of town. If I'd known, I would've shelled out an extra 50 pounds to not walk those five minutes to the hotel under the gaze of random idlers. Pros: 1. Staff was well mannered and helpful and checked us in fast. 2. Location? Although due to the miserable way we spent the night, a better option would have been to hire a minicab that night to a nicer hotel near the airport. We ended up spending the night not being able to shower or sleep, and regretting booking this so very much. I got a cold, and my husband's foot sprain got a lot worse from all this stess. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. I wouldn't stay there again even if they paid me to.
- Andrew (10/5): Great budget hotel - Don't stay here expecting a fancy hotel. It's cheap and cheerful and doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. The staff are friendly and the rooms are fine (small, but so is the price)
- Alison (6/5): Clean but uncomfortable, lumpy bed - My room was clean but the bed was so uncomfortable. The springs were poking through the mattress and it was hard to sleep. Also the light switch over the bed was half hanging off the wall. At one point no water came out of the basin taps and the water pressure in the shower was very weak.. I was very disappointed. The first requirement of any hotel is surely to supply a comfortable bed.

- Alan (2/5): - Worst room I have ever stayed in. Tiny, dingy,stuffy,noisy. I have never seen a bathroom so small, I opened a cupboard door and there it was sink, shower, toilet altogether! You have walk on wet floor to get to the w.c.. I couldn't get my bag past the gap between the bed and the door and the only place to hang clothes is a cupboard on the wall which even my shirts would not fit into. You cannot see the TV because it is high up t lovehe wall at the side of the bed. The interior photos on their website appear to be of the foyer of the hotel next door. All this for only a little under £100 per night
- Verified traveler (2/5): - My experience in this hotel was terrible. I wasn't in the Excelsior, but in a 'sister" hotel, Albion house. It was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The room was like a cupboard, with barely room for a bed. There was about a foot of space beside the bed, into which was crammed a shelf for kettle etc & a sort of box hanging on the wall, which was meant to be a wardrobe. The shower was actually above the toilet in a minuscule bathroom. But the really worrying thing is that I was bitten quite badly. I am prone to mosquito & midge bites, but this is something different. All over my back, lower left leg, left arm & isolated bites elsewhere. I squashed a couple of insects in the room but fear there may have been more. So hotels in Argyle Square are definitely to be avoided, The Melville, the Excelsior & Albion House are all under the same management. The room I was in bore no resemblance to the ones on the website.

- Karl (2/5): Disgusting!! - Avoid at all costs!!! The reviews are spot on it's dirty dusty and small. The first room they put us in the shower head flew off and nearly hit me in the head and it was all downhill from there. They then took us to the top floor where the room wasn't big enough to swing a cat around it was so cramped it was astonishing. There was toilet paper left in the toilet the shower was so small you had no chance of movement so you had to keep the shower curtain open and then the floor got soaked because of this... there was no tv remote there was dust everywhere there was a t-shirt that someone had left behind that had previously stayed in the room before behind the bed dirty marks on the cupboard the safe was already locked so we couldn't use it. There was only one tea bag and water left in the kettle so god knows how long that was there for and for £154 for two nights I'd expect ALOT better
- Verified traveler (2/5): Will definitely not being staying here again - I would not recommend the Excelsior or any of its partner hotels (Melville and Albion). The beds were uncomfortable, the shower was so low that anyone taller than 5'10'' would need to duck, the room was quite warm despite the radiator being off, and there were no security locks on the doors. Also, my first booking did not have a bathroom in the room and I had no idea that this was not included in the room cost. So, if you are booking at this hotel, know that "Shared Bathroom" does not mean that the bathroom is in the room and perhaps open (like the sink is outside of the toilet), but is indeed shared via the hallway with other guests.

There was a water drip over one of the beds when the upstairs tenant showered. Floors were dirty, shower drain didn't drain as it was full of hair. You hear everything, room was beside the front door which closes loudly and all conversation is heard.
- Jason (8/5): Great budget option for Central London - The hotel has a variety of rooms and depending on which you are allocated the sizes vary dramatically with some incredibly small, like other central hotels in London. In saying this, we have stayed many times at this hotel and the staff are attentive, the rooms modernised with comfortable beds and extra little amenities, showers have good pressure and hot water and the wifi system has been upgraded to cover the entire hotel. Given its great location near Kings Cross, this is a great option for those wanting a comfortable budget stay in Central London
- Amanda (6/5): No breakfast here, but close to King's X tube. - This hotel does not offer an included breakfast as was advertised on Expedia when I booked it; in fact, they have no dining room. However, the room was clean, if cramped with three beds. The shower leaked terribly, but when we reported it the manager had it fixed that day. One day the staff forgot to give us clean towels, but the person on duty got some for us when we asked. Wifi works well. Our particular room was at street level. Wednesday and Thursday nights were peaceful, though we overheard a lot of partying and one ugly domestic fight on Friday and Saturday nights.

We had to go to another hotel next door for the night and move back to our room the following night. However, the staff are very nice. It is a good place for budget travellers
- Paula (6/5): The man thing it has is location - On arrival, like most of the reviews, we learned that we had been allocated a room across in the Argyle (I think). We were very disappointed and were adamant we wanted what we had booked, so we viewed "the new room" on offer, but also asked to view the "only room left" at the Excelsior. As it turned out we opted for the room at the Argyle as it was much more spacious. The room at the Excelsior you could hardly swing a cat in. The most frustrating thing was that the man at reception stated they didn't have any rooms at all to fit our party size (3 adults 2 kids) at the Excelsior, which I found strange and would like to learn where the advertising picture showing a family room with 3 double beds comes from?! The style seemed the same as the rooms at the Excelsior?! The man at receptions manner was awful, but I must admit he redeemed himself over the couple of days by opting for a more professional approach than on the first night. The room looked nice and had plenty of room, but on closer inspection I must state that it could do with better cleaning and upkeep. Surely it can't be hard to wash a dirty cup and give the shower room a good scrub?! All in all the location is great if you want to get out and about with Kings Cross 2 secs away and a short walk to Euston and Russell Square. Although if you are concerned for things like drunks or groups of people in the area, I would steer clear. Prime location to get the head down and go out and explore, but not much else I can say.

Felt like a bad college dorm. We moved hotels after the first night.
- Laurie (6/5): Great location - worked for us! - My daughter and I booked a basic room with shared bathroom to save money. It was fine for our needs. Very convenient to Kings Cross tube station which made seeing London easy. Room was very small, but that's what we expected. View from window of a small park was nice. We didn't spend much time at the hotel, but it served our purposes. Staff members were friendly & allowed us to store our bags both before and after checkout.
- jeffrey (4/5): Wouldn't use again. - Tiny little room and bed was tiny as well and uncomfortable. Did complain at reception ( which was 2 doors away but guy wasn't really interested) Only saving grace was it was close to St pancras station and we were able to get onto tube easy to get to a convention we was attending on the Saturday. But that's all it had going for it. Wouldn't use again I'm afraid.

- Jonathan Garrett allsopp (6/5): wasn't bad but very small - to be completely honest it was a nice place it was very clean but if you want a bathroom or a shower inside your room this will not be the place to go if you had a ground-level it would be okay but we are on the 6th floor and were required to walk up the stairs due to there being no lift or elevator which was fine because it was only a three-day short stay there was no breakfast included they were very hospitable and cleaned the rooms daily the room was probably the smallest room I've ever stayed in in my life the bed was uncomfortable but overall it wasn't a bad place to stay the neighborhood was good the tube station was near as well as bus stations places to eat and directly across the street from the train station if you're wanting to get to the London Eye or Tower Bridge or Tower of London it will be required to get on the subway or a bus that will take about a half hour if you're good at the tube maybe 10 minutes

- Brenda (6/5): A very quiet street in good location to kings cros - It was a positive experience. Extremely quiet street. Super close to kings cross station. Felt lucky that the hotel was not too busy so it was quiet. People staying on our floor and sharing the bathroom with us were as quiet and respectful as us so it was a good experience. Bed was big and room was clean. Bed was not super comfortable but was not uncomfortable. We slept well. It's not a hotel to hang out in. It's a place to stay after long days of sight seeing. I chose it because of the price. I could not find cheaper. I would stay there again if I had too. But would also know that the potential is there to hear people coming in and out in the night if it were busy. Bring earplugs. But good hotel and stay for value. Clean. Not too old.

- Kaye (6/5): Good value for money - Considering this is only 400yards from kings cross station it's in a great location. Especially for the price your paying considering it is in central London I could not complain. Shower could have done with more power. Generally clean. Rooms were smaller than expected but again for the price and the stay I could not complain. If you just need a place to sleep especially if you are just out and about this is ideal. Staff were friendly. Reception area is nice.

- Verified traveler (2/5): This is a Hostel not a Hotel - The best thing about the hotel was the central location. The room was TINY, the size of a walk in closet. Bathroom and shower is shared between 3 rooms. One of the days we had no hot water. The hotel is OK if you are on a tight budget but if you expect anything decent this is not the place to go.
- Jonathon (4/5): Suitable for drunk students only - If I'd had a hard night in the nightclubs at ~18 years old then this would have been perfect. Arriving off the Eurostar and lugging suitcases up narrow stairs to find a room that was considerably less comfortable than a train seat was not.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Easy access to train station - The hotel served it's purpose as we were travelling between Wales and France and needed a stop over close enough to walk to and from St Pancras International. It worked very well. The service when we arrived was good and the rooms clean. Just very small for 5 people! The park outside had some unsavoury characters but inside we felt safe.

- Christopher (6/5): - The hotel was average for London, the staff was PHENOMENAL. I wish I recalled their names but we arrived early and they found is an available room. I lost my phone in the lobby and the desk staff found it and returned it to me. With holiday pics and some of my children on the media card in that phone...I was ecstatic to have it returned.

- paddy (6/5): Get what you pay for ! - For an overnighter this place is ok. Felt a bit like Harry Potter in his room under the stairs as the room was the tiniest I had ever had pleasure to stay in. Seems this hotel group have a number of properties on this square. Like I say for an over night stay where you a bed, a bathroom and some privacy it's fine. If you want a nic essay experience then not a place I would recommend.

- Hannah (4/5): Hotel close to St Pancras - Small box room, bed was smaller than a double. I know it was cheap accomodation but i have never seen a room like it before! It was clean, altho the plug in the sink did not come out so we had to tell reception, a guy who didnt speak much english took the plug out completely. We had to share the bathroom which was just like a walk in wet room, along with toilet, which smelt very unpleasant! and didnt look clean, with two other guests.We needed to check out very early the next morning, we were told reception was manned 24/7 but it was pitch black and no one was around! We had to ring the bell until someone came, grumpily to take our key! Personally the money that made the reception look so plush should of been spent on the rooms!! The place is fine if you want cheap, one night stay thats close to the station, but other than not for me!
- Lynn (6/5): Overnight stay - Very nice polite and helpful reception, room was very pleasant, no plug for wash basin, bed was not comfortable as 2 beds pushed together and kept rolling into the middle. When I was in bed a man knocked on my door to look at the heating this was not convenient so refused to let him in, I was already in bed. a little noisy due to room being opposite door at the top of the stairs so heard a lot of people talking and arriving.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Fine hotel in the Russell Square/St. Pancras area - I enjoyed my time at the Excelsior. I stayed in a 4th floor room with a shared shower and toilet. The room was small but it served my purposes. The street was quiet and the bed was comfortable. The shower was in an adjacent room and the water pressure left a little to be desired. The room was heated by a furnace that I was able to control, which was nice.The hotel staff was very accommodating and patient and they allowed me to check in a couple of hours early, which I appreciated. The building that I was in did not have an elevator, so that meant lugging my luggage up a few flights of stairs, which I didn't mind but could certainly be a burden if you have several heavy bags. All in all, I think I got what I paid for and I'd recommend it for any short, economy visit to London.
- Verified traveler (2/5): A hostel would've been better. - When booked I was told air con and en suite as well as free breakfast then they changed it’s £60 extra for a toilet and breakfast “was never free” no air con or fan as promised, no soap or toiletries only towels, room so small was made for two but bed wasn’t much bigger than a single, up loads of stairs weren’t offered any help with luggage, wasn’t cleaned daily like promised, water smelt like faecal waste, toilet was clean but tiny and shared. I honestly believe a hostel would have been better. Photos on here and the official site were of their neighbouring hotel. Came back yesterday and planning to complain as they would not listen at hotel. It basically ruined my parents weekend away and their birthday’s (week apart)
- Daniel (6/5): Basic accommodation, excellent location. - We were only there for one night on our way to Cambridge. Were looking for a clean, safe, comfortable place to stay, and the Excelsior was quite adequate. We were on the top floor, so if you have a lot of luggage, it's a bit of a haul, but that is the case at most B&Bs. Breakfast was very good - typical English breakfast. Staff was very pleasant.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not again - If you don't mind carrying your luggages from ground Floor to 4th Floor via a very narrow stair and share toilet and raindrop like shower with neighbours, you can try. For me, it was my last time.
