Guest Reviews
- Andreas (8/5): Lovely street, convenient house. - Very lovely street, close to the subway, comfortable living room/kitchen, in total very convenient.
- R M (10/5): Historic Home - Excellent experience and this lodging was very quiet and clean - - away from the noise and hassle of the city. 1 minute walk to the subway station. Excellent for this trip - - easy access to the subway was a definite plus. Would highly recommend this lodging. The owner was very helpful and courteous.
- Debbi (10/5): Charming historic street - peace and quiet - Fantastic place to stay if you want to be in the Washington Heights area. Charming historic street - quiet and private.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Close to subway and Morris-Jumel Mansion - More breakfast food would be appreciated. Bananas and non-dairy milk would be a good idea.
- Linda (10/5): - Great place which met my needs perfectly. My room which was the least expensive was an amazing bargain. It IS very small but I was prepared for this having read other people's reviews. I wasn't there much so it was fine for a place to sleep and briefly hang out. The block MichaelNY is located on is absolutely gorgeous. The shared bathrooms weren't a problem in the least and I need a lot of time to get gorgeous in the morning. There's only 4 rooms and there are 2 shared bathrooms so there was never any competition for the bathrooms and I hardly ever saw the other guests. Michael offers a real bonus which is a common room downstairs with comfy chairs, a TV, and a kitchenette. He provides coffee, juice, cereal, milk, and everything needed for toast and guests can use the mini-fridge and microwave. This really made my life a lot more convenient. The street is very quiet and I slept like a baby at MichaelNY. The only issues I had were that I would often get back quite late at night and it takes forever to get all the way up there on the train, since after hours the train doesn't go express, and during the first week I stayed at MichaelNY the tub could've used a mid-week cleaning because one of the other guests was a very hirsute gentleman who shed while showering and neglected to wash away all the hairs he left in the tub. Otherwise the place was spotless. I would stay at MichaelNY and highly recommend it to others.
- Milani (8/5): Apartment Hotel in Harlem - It was a good, safe, and comfortable stay. I had the largest room on the 2nd floor because I stayed there for a week. The guy Michael made sure I knew how to get there when I arrived to New York and was hospitable to me whenever I saw him. It was very close to the bus stop and train stations. I got to and from Columbia University in about 15 minutes everyday. I would recommend anyone to stay here.
- anonymous (8/5): review - It looked like a residence rather than a hotel. I Didn't like that the tv in the room was very small, it looked like it was 19 inchs. The heat in the room didnt work, so we had to use a plug in heater, and that barely worked. overall, it was a good location and place to stay at.
- sas (10/5): Great historic treat in nyc - I have worked and stayed in NYC for 30 years, and have never found anything like this. It's a small area that feels relatively untouched by the wrecking balls of progress. If you love historical buildings, this is a treat.
- Grahame (8/5): Great for a quick stay - Michael is a great host (as is his daughter, who helped out). I had the smallest room, which is really just a single bed in a tiny room. I was barely in the room because I was out touring the city, so this was all that I needed. The little laneway where the guest house is located (Sylvan Terrace) is adorable, and is located half a block from a C-train subway entrance.
It's not the nicest neighbourhood in NYC, but it's perfectly fine - especially if you're used to traveling in big cities (and have basic street smarts). There is a great grocery store very nearby, and a subway line that will take you down to Times Square in 30-40 min. For those needing an affordable and clean place to hang your hat while touring NYC, this place is fantastic. I will definitely stay there again.
- Guangyu (10/5): - close to subway, quiet, and really different experience from other hotels, can you image this in Manhattan? excellent for staying few of days.
- Susan (10/5): Exactly what we wanted - Clean, comfortable, friendly, and really well situated, this was the perfect place for us. We met lovely people there, and Michael our host did all he could to help us out.
- katharine (10/5): the owner was generous & helpful - This small apartment with shared bathroom was a delight to stay in & suited us very well.
- Eric (10/5): Great Place to Stay - My stay was great, I had no issues with anything other than the wifi never working. My room was clean and the air conditioning work well. The shared bathroom was also cleaned and I was provided with towels and soap & shampoo. The breakfast in the morning is pretty good, the owner provides a good variety of options and usually hangs around the kitchen in case you have any questions. The neighborhood is good and not dangerous at all, the subway is right around the corner along with a small market. Overall a great experience.
- Venshard (8/5): Convenient, safe, clean - The hotel itself is in the Washington Heights neighborhood, with Harlem directly to the south. It's a safe neighborhood, just take precaution when walking alone late at night. There is a subway entrance literally less than a minute away on foot. The hotel is secure and there is hardly ever any traffic on the street. The room was EXTREMELY small. I'm not complaining, all I need is a bed, but for those expecting anything bigger than a slightly oversized walk-in closet, I would look elsewhere. The bathroom is shared and clean. The host is nice and helpful. For smokers, there is no smoking in the building, around the building or on Sylvan Terrace street. You have to walk to either the corner of Sylvan and Jumel, or walk to the stairs that lead to St Nicholas. Overall, a good experience that was fairly priced considering the convenient location.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A friendly place to stay - This is the second time I stayed at Michael's guest house and certainly look forward to stay there on my next trip to NYC. Four guest rooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 full kitchen. The bed is comfortable and the place quiet. The guests have always been friendly and interesting. Michael is a nice and helpful host. Great for solo traveller or young couple. The place is located in a beautiful private street of historical houses and about 50 meters from the subway.
- Mary (10/5): Convenient, clean, peaceful - A lovely place with exceptional host Michael, who greeted me at the door and helped me with my bag. A few rooms with shared bathroom. Stairs leading to very pleasant upstairs rooms. On a non-thru street. Very quiet, safe, peaceful. Birds are chirping outside in the morning! Subway is just at the corner, so convenient. Other guests are respectful and cordial. TV and a/c in bedroom. Fridge, microwave, coffee and tea, toaster, fruit, yogurt, juice, cereal etc in common room with TV, games, books, sitting area. All rooms are impeccably clean and inviting. I was delighted to stay here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good deal for Manhattan. - The architecture of the street is awesome. You won't believe finding a gem light that in that neighborhood.
The rooms are very quiet, no traffic noise whatsoever, respectful guests. Bathrooms are very clean.
Near from 2 subway lines
Some little details could be improved though: longer bed, more comfortable chair-desk to work, and better bath towels.
- Mario (10/5): They don't have private bathrooms - Everything was great except for the fact that hotels.com lie about the bathrooms!!! In the website they clearly state that the rooms have private bathrooms but once you get there, no, it's actually a shared bathroom and that was not cool.. Basically you pay for something and then you don't get it, so I was very unsatisfied about that
- Joan (8/5): Friendly Hosts - Michael and his daughter are helpful with navigating NY, and flexible about check-in & check-out hours. Lots of amenities supplied, and upkeep is good. The place is near a major street, and the sirens and street noise carried quite a bit. A sleeping mask is a must since there are not black-out curtains. Since it's a historical home, floors aren't even and the stairs are high and narrow, so carrying heavy luggage up them can be a bit of a challenge. Supermarket and drugstore down the street, so it's fine to stay a few days.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Excellent staff!
- Jerome H. (8/5): MichaelNYC was a pretty good place to crash. - My trip was basically for a Christmas getaway and to see friends. Everything was clean and in order and all that I needed such as fruit stands, a laundromat, and transportation was literally half a block away. The Host, Michael, was very welcoming and I even got a chance to meet some people from Sweden and Italy. I had a good time and I hope to frequent his business again sometime next year.
- Kevin (8/5): Historic neighborhood. - The most interesting place I've ever stayed in in NYC. The street and the buildings are important historically as well as leading up to the Morris-Jummel Mansion.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Rundown place, bathroom upstairs in need of renovation, towels and bed linens not clean, a real disappointment given that it's not cheap!
- Patrick (8/5): Very untypical for NYC. - What you'd never expect to find in Manhattan: a real B&B. Michael provides breakfast as well as thoughtful conversation.
- S (10/5): I loved staying at MichaelNY - I read as much as I could before choosing MichaelNY for my recent 4 night stay in NYC. I was very pleased with my choice.
MichaelNY is perfect for the independent and fit traveler (stairs, both in house, and in subway).
There is a charm to the structure, and the quaint, historic, cobblestoned street.
MichaelNY has 4 bedrooms, 2 shared bathrooms, a common kitchen/living room--always available, milk, orange joice, yogurt, bread, fruit.
Michael makes himself available every morning, and you can always call him if you have a need.
I was quite impressed with the unique locks and doors system for the utmost safety. No "staff"--consisting of Michael and, right now, delightful Alexandria--is required to let you in. However, Alexandria was keeping an eye out for me, and quickly met me, and gave me a quick and thorough orientation, so that I could be on my way.
For those who commented on no sheet: MichaelNY has the European "system" of bedding, a very comfortable comforter totally encased in a clean sheet. I found the bed very comfortable.
Having read reviews, I chose not to take the smaller single, but the larger one. It was just great! So spacious.
In my room, I could adjust heat/AC to suit myself.
Bathroom floors are "real" tile, and other floors are wood. I did hear other doors opening, closing, but it never bothered me. While I was there, all guests were respectful.
I would certainly choose this delightful spot again. Even very late at night, I felt safe.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - good choice for if you do not wan to spend your budget on hotel, and still require comfortable accomodation
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fair price for the place. Michael is a very friendly guy and I enjoyed being here for 5 nights.
- Mylene (10/5): - I had a pleasant stay at Michael NY for 4 nights. Charming homelike lodging_I like this quaint, quiet neighborhood in Harlem. Safe to walk to the hotel even late at night from NY Presbyterian Hospital. The site is convenient to Subways,Bus stations and stores.Friendly neighbors. Inside the house I had the cozy big room with 2 single beds ,fireplace and big chair. I was pleased that Michael allowed my daughter to stay one night and use the other bed for extra charge. The room was clean so is the bathroom. I was not inconvenienced with the shared Bath & Toilet because it was always available whenever I get to use it. The house is so quiet, I could hear footsteps or door keys sounds at times but never met any guest in hallways or kitchen. I only have to call Michael when I have question and he was attentive. Personalized service.
My small complain when I booked myself I overlooked a past due date free cancellation.Meaning you are hooked once you book yourself and even if they do not charge you yet till you check out. You can't cancel days before check in date without a fee.
- Trap (6/5): Great place if you're staying alone - This place is ok if you're staying by yourself in NY. As the house and neighborhood is extremely quiet, I couldn't imagine kids, or even a couple staying here. Although I was alone (there for work), the house was clean and the shared bathroom facilities were basic at best. The rooms are very close together with thin walls, so this is definitely not the place for a romantic getaway. The owner of the property, Michael, is very nice and welcoming. But only go here if you're staying alone and just looking for a quiet place to rest and wash up.
- Ginger (10/5): Great experience - Single woman traveling alone, it was excellent. Will be returning
- Patricia (8/5): Quaint and sparse - Quaint and sparse but perfect if you don't plan on spending much time in your room. Tiny TV that I didn't need. Vibrant diverse neighborhood. Excellent host. Bed was little more than a cot but room was clean.
- Harriet (8/5): cute B & B in historic Washington Heights - Michael was there to greet us when we arrived and carried out luggage up the stairs to our rooms. He was pleasant and courteous as he explained how everything worked including the shared kitchen and living space. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, although I would have liked to have had a top sheet on the bed.
- Michael (8/5): NYC - Great place for me to stay as I went to Yankee Stadium twice and it's only a 10 minute walk from there. A more chic neighborhood would be nice but there was a new coffee/food place 1 block away on Edgecombe. Easy subway access. Hotel owner very friendly and informative.
- sagarika (6/5): Upper westside economic option - Stay overall was good. I felt safe in the house but it is the spanish harlem and one has to be careful in the neighborhood if walking late at night. Michael is helpful and very affable as a host. However there is not much interaction unless you call him. When I first booked the place I did not realize that it is a common bathroom. The kitchen has fruits and yogurt and bread for a continental breakfast. What I liked is that it is walking distance to the Columbia Presbyterian hospital and to the Metro.
- Pamela (8/5): Good place to stay - I spent very little time at the hotel; however, it is a great place to spend the night. I enjoyed meeting Michael as he was very helpful with directions. I would recommend staying at Inn Michael.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hôtel the street is Nice - 30 minutes OF the centre the Subway is 1 minutes to walk
- Louise (2/5): Don't stay here. Dirty, uncomfortable, unfriendly - Having read the reviews before booking, I was extremely disappointed with MichaelNY. The room was dirty with thick black dust across the windowsills and grubby marks over the walls and doors. Due to the dust I would strongly recommend that travellers with asthma do not stay here. The bed was uncomfortable with hard pillows & thin duvets. The room was poorly furnished, was cold & the TV did not work. The towels were stained with brown marks & were tatty & ripped. There was mould in the bathroom in the shower & windowsill & a dirty bath mat. Despite being advertised as a hotel, the towels & sheets weren't changed & the beds weren't made at all during our week stay. The bathroom was shared & we found we were frequently delayed in the mornings waiting for the other guests to finish in the shower or toilet. On a number of mornings there was very little hot water which meant we had cold showers. The wi-fi was frequently disabled or broken which meant we could rarely use it. The breakfast selection was extremely limited & on some mornings there was only enough to have a slice of toast each. The food that was there was cheap and of poor quality. Guests had to help themselves to food & wash-up themselves. The kitchen & dining area was filthy with thick dirt and dust balls & was extremely cold. The proprietor did not tell us where the bathroom was, where the kitchen or food was and was generally unhelpful and rude. This was not a hotel, this was an extremely poor hostel
- Helen (10/5): The right place for me - Rooms were basic but clean. Everything was exactly as promised. As a single woman traveling alone, I was a bit concerned about safety but always felt completely comfortable in this neighborhood. Enjoyed chatting with Michael. Yes, the subway ride in and out of midtown was about 25 minutes, but it was easy and part of the New York adventure. I'll return here next time I'm in town.
- John (8/5): Cheap NYC room - I was visiting NYC for three days and wanted a cheap place to stay. I hate to spend a lot of money on a hotel room when the plan is pretty much only to be there to sleep/shower. After reading a lot of the positive reviews, I decided to book a room. I'll break down my thoughts for you about MichaelNY:
Convenience: You CANNOT beat the convenience of this place! Like the other reviewers mentioned, there is a subway station literally a half minute walk from the front door of the place. Once I would leave my room, I was in the middle of the action in downtown Manhattan in about 10 minutes. What really sold me on this place is the convenience of the subway.
Cleanliness: In general, it is clean and I felt comfortable during my visit. However, there is room for some detailed cleaning throughout the place. (Walls have various fingerprints, walls have cobwebs in the corner, etc...that kind of thing.)
Cost: I thought the cost was reasonable taking into consideration what a lot of other places are charging in NYC!! Regarding the room, it's nothing fancy, and you won't find any real frills or perks. However, I didn't really care about that. Like I said, I spend almost all of my time running all over NYC and seeing the sites.
Advice: Buy a Metrocard for $30 and you get unlimited riding on the subway for 7 days. From MichaelNY, you will use the "A" train a lot which is the express subway to downtown. However, you first have to take the "C" train from 163 st to 145 st.
- Graeme (6/5): Intimate New York Experience - My son and I really enjoyed our stay here. It was relaxing, clean, very friendly and close to a subway 20 minutes away from Downtown. Our only quibble was that some of the fixtures obviously needed renovating - (room TV, wifi and bathroom plug). Would stay there again.
- Mohamed (10/5): A nice quiet hotel in New york
- it was my first time in NYC, the place is good , clean. Michael is a helpful person .
the subway to everywhere in NYC is just 3 min walk
the shared bathroom was not a proplem to me always clean and vacant
I loved the experience and sure i would like to go again
breakfast is good : toast , milk , cereals , fruit, coffee
when i was there he had to paint the front of the house little noisy morning but i could handle it
- FM (10/5): Great place to stay! - The proprieter made this visit a breeze for me. The facilities were clean and attractive. The street is a cobble-stoned view into New York 100 years ago - especially as George Washington's 1776 house is at the end of the street! The location is close to subway lines, and the surrounding neighborhood is true New York: full of positive thriving culture and folks from all walks of life. I would be happy living in such a neighborhood, so of course staying there was a pleasure.
- jane (10/5): Great, friendly hotel for lone travellers. - Michael looked after our 18 year old son while he stayed in New York for 2 nights after finishing his camp America experience. He gave him advice regarding tourist attractions and subways.
The room was comfortable and our son had a great nights sleep.
Thank you Michael.
- ahw (10/5): Excellent european-style boutique hotel - This is an excellent place. Quiet and clean, in a great neighbourhood, and seconds away from the subway. I was very impressed.
- Verified traveler (10/5): New York - Great accommodation. Fantastic price with all facilities required to see this amazing city. Subway is only 30 sec walk away. Supermarket and laundromat very close.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The owner of the house was nice to us, trying to meet our needs. One unfortunate thing to note was there it had no private bath offer. we thought, it had had when we reserved it from Hotel.com.
- Mary + Zbig (10/5): Great location quiet historic uptown location - We found MichaelNY at 15 Sylvan Terrace to be clean, comfortable, quiet, peaceful, and secure. Nina was waiting for us when we arrived and Michael, the owner, was available and friendly. MichaelNY is steps away from a great grocery store and the subway. There is a kitchen and coffee to get our day started. At the end of the day, we came home to a hot shower and comfortable bed. Don't miss the Palladian style Morris-Jumel Mansion and garden, built in 1765, and at the top of Sylvan Terrace.
- Kris (8/5): - I booked the smallest room in the house and it was plenty big enough for one. Michael provides ample storage in the room for a short stay. All four rooms were booked while I was there, but the house was still quiet. I had no problems getting to sleep. I also had no problems getting time to take a shower, etc. in the shared bathrooms. Michael was a gracious host and even printed something for me in his private residence when I needed it. There were problems with the a/c in my room and he felt so bad about it, he refunded part of my payment with no prompting from me. Breakfast options were slim, but you should eat out on vacation in NYC anyway - there's so many good places to eat! The small refrigerator was packed and probably needed cleaning out. Wi-fi worked every time I needed it. House phone was available with free calls in the US. I felt safe in the area even at night. Sylvan Terrace is is not really a thoroughfare and was empty except for the people who live there. The main streets nearby were lively with locals hanging out in front of shops, etc. but I never felt threatened or worried. Police have regular walking beats in the area as well. All in all a very enjoyable stay, at a great price.
- Retired adventuresome couple (8/5): Wonderful location; quality service - Lovely, quiet neighborhood. Hard to believe one is in NYC! Owners very quick to respond to needs of guests. Would definitely stay again.
- Joe (10/5): Historical Location with a Pleasant Host! - The room fit what i needed in NYC. It is up north and outside of this gorgeous neighborhood, is a high crime area. However, it is patroled by many cops at night and the home is safe and is on a safe street. Michael is a geat host and the house is about a 15min subway ride from everything in Manhattan. I was in town for an interview and this was a perfect place for me.
