Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (4/5): Sleepy workers - I would say the reception was quite unresponsive.
- massimo (2/5): Pessimo, spiacente e molto deluso.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quirky & quaint b&b. Excellent location, 5 mins walk from Coloseum, plenty of cheap traditional restaurants, shops, delis nearby. The family room was spacious & really clean & we found the area to be quiet & safe. If you don't want to pay over the odds for a city centre hotel, The Coloseum Garden is the place to be. We really enjoyed our stay, thank you so much. Grazie Mille.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great local place to stay - This is one of the oldest builings in the area. Close to the Colosseum, Palatine hill and lots of places to eat and drink. The room was updated and comfortable. The welcoming staff was so kind and helpful. We enjoyed being local.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The place was super clean, centrally located and the staff were exceptional.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The communication with the hosts was great, they followed up on my check in via emails and when i got in they were available on whats app and were very helpful with giving me suggestiond on getting around. As a single traveller i really appreciated the communication and efforts to assist me.
- SARMAD (8/5): - Too many bugs
- Lee (4/5): No garden! Basement bedroom with no windows! - So disappointed in this hotel! First of all their website said two double beds and it was only 1 double bed and 2 twin beds. The front desk woman was rude and told me this was all they had! We could not cancel the room despite it being incorrectly listed as double beds. Also it was in the basement with no windows and there is no garden...it is a dirty small area outside your room with dead or dying pots!
- Katy (10/5): - Great communication, checked in before 2pm.
Fridge available, as well as teas and coffee capsules feee of charge. Quiet room. Overall a great stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Rosie is the best!!
Very professional and courteous.
We were running late from and excursion and she waited for us to return so that we could collect our baggage.
She is an asset to the hotel!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This hotel was all about price and location. I was visiting my son doing the summer abroad at the University of Notre Dame in Rome which is just down the street. The room was clean but small. Very different from American hotels, more of a residential building. The best thing was the staff. Rosario was very helpful in communicating details and arranging transportation for me.
- William (10/5): My ideal Roman break, visit to my Daughter. - I was visiting my Daughter, so the hotel was an excellent location and base for sightseeing, restaurants and to spend time with my daughter . Hotel is small and room based. Staffed only from 9am-3pm . Staff very friendly and helpful.
- RAFAEL (8/5): - Fomos muito bem atendidos.
- davide (6/5): Una notte.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Colosseum Gardens - The room itself was lovely and the decor was great. There was a small kitchen that had free tea. But at the time, there was ongoing construction and also there were issues with the keys.
- Nat (8/5): - Nice quiet street close to the Colosseum and metro line B. Our room had great amenities, the bed was extremely comfortable and air con was very effective (I find this is rarely the case in hotels!) which was perfect after a long day walking around the beautiful city!
- Janea (8/5): - Great apartment if you just need somewhere to freshen up & sleep. Very comfortable big beds & good quality bedding. Air con & great little kitchen area. We loved our little private garden area too. Location is fab. 5 minutes walk from the Colosseum & Metro,
- George (10/5): Boutique hotel in centre of Rome - The front desk gentleman was very friendly and resourceful. The room was very clean with the comfiest bed. Very nicely and thoughtfully decorated inside. The location is perfect for tourists, 5 minutes walk from the colleseum, 15 minutes walk to the Trevi fountain. The hotel provided a map with places to eat, and drink which was helpful. There were no crowds and the room was very quiet. English channels on the tv, also ability to connect to Netflix and Spotify were a bonus!
- Janet (8/5): Lovely quirky place with very friendly staff - We stayed in the quadruple room as a family of 4 with 2 teenagers. It was a spacious room with with a small kitchen and small shady patio. This was great and meant we had different spaces to sit in and we could prepare our own breakfast daily. Room was clean and towels changed daily. In a nice quiet location 5 mins walk to Colleseum and 10 minutes to Colloseo Metro. There is a supermarket and a few nice restaurants and bars in the area but it was a fairly quiet place to stay. This suited us fine. The only downside was that the patio was a bit tatty with loose wires and a few comibination boilers that served other rooms. As the patio was really a bonus and our children were older this wasn't really a problem for us but it would benefit from a tidy up. The staff were very friendly and helpful. For the price, this was an excellent choice and we would definitely return.
- Denise (10/5): - Hotel staff super helpful! Lots of restaurants close by and a small 24 hour grocery store. Less than 10 minutes from the hop on, hop off bus stop.
- Cameron (8/5): Super cute hotel~ - We had a great stay with Retrome! The customer service was great. I got an email after booking, explaining that the front desk is open 9-5 and asking when I expected to arrive. They offered to store our luggage.
Upon arrival, checkin was quick and easy. They got a room ready for us early, as they knew we would be arriving around 11am. We got a tour of the hotel and were in our room in 15 minutes. The staff was very friendly.
The room was more spacious than I expected, had two chairs, side tables, a soft and very comfortable bed (exceeded expectations), shelf, clothing rack, etc. There was a kitchen we had access to on the floor.
The hotel was very quiet and clean. The neighborhood is super cute, with great food options. Walking distance to both metro lines, VERY close to trams and busses.
The wifi signal strength varied. Sometimes it was great, sometimes it wasn't strong enough to connect. This was not an issue for us, as we had cellular data. Could be an issue if you don't.
On our last day, there was no hot water. When the checkout time was coming up, I talked to the man at the front desk and he offered to let us stay late until the warm water was back. We went to lunch and took hot showers afterwards. It was a minor inconvenience, but would've been awful had they not let us stay later (or if we had early morning plans).
Overall, fantastic stay~
- john (10/5): Great place - Great location and lots of privacy - like air b&b but not having to stay in a strangers home
- Randy (10/5): Nice place and location - It was a nice property and excellent location close to many historic sites. Short walk to subway. Very good value.
- Ilkka (8/5): Mukava paikka lähellä nähtävyyksiä - Helppo tulla ja mennä. Hyviä ruokapaikkoja lähellä. Huone ei ollut kovin iso mutta toimiva. Erityisesti WC:ssä kunnon suihkukaappi minkä ansiosta lattia pysyi kuivana. Tätä tapaa kovin harvoin.
- Lien (8/5): - We had some troubles finding the hotel, but once checked in it was great. Large bed, clean bathroom. We heard loud noises every day at about 6 am (garbage collection?), which woke us up. Apart from that the hotel is close to Coloseo and is a nice place to relax. We would recommend it!
- Travelers (6/5): Good - Our room And bathroom was very small. The room was ok, The bathroom was clean and quite new. The bed was comfortable. The best thing that hotel is in very good location!
- Sara (8/5): Rome - We were very happy with the hotel. It was clean, reasonably priced, and in a great location. The room was small and basic, but you get what you paid for. The room was clean and met our needs. The staff was very helpful. You can walk to the hotel from the metro. There are numerous restaurants in walking distance and many of the sites you want to see in Rome are within walking distance. We would stay there again
- Sohail (6/5): Okay on a budget - It's kind of like you get what you paid for. It's a small place...good for a 1-3 day stay if you don't spend lot of time in the room. Good for just sleeping there. Bathroom was tiny. Shower was okay..and front staff was helpful but if you check in after a certain time they charge you extra. No room card system..they give you door keys. Wifi was good.
- luca (10/5): - perfetto
- Brian (8/5): Great apartment close to Colosseum - A very relaxed and comfortable apartment located close to the Colosseum and Forum, with several options for nearby restaurants, groceries and coffee shops. The staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed mornings and evenings on our patio with a comfortable breeze.
- JOHN (8/5): No frills, clean and simple... - This place was perfect for us, a non partying 50+ gay couple who are pretty much not into paying for or needing unnecessary frills, located right around the corner from 2 gay bars that cater to a mixed crowd all day and night long til 2 in the morning, so great for quieter socializing in the evening after dinner, plenty of good restaurants to be found in the nearby neighborhood.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Grocery close
- visited rome on (4/5): It's not a hotel, it's an apartment building, - The apartment we got didn't had hot water, Roberto was very nice and was very accommodating and offered an apartment with running hot water at 3rd floor but we didn't use it.
Best thing about this was it's location, it's like few mins walk to Colossium
- Verified traveler (4/5): Room in what seems like an apartment building. - It was in a good location but it was not a normal hotel layout.
- Yvonne (10/5): Budget hotel which meets all basic requirements - Budget hotel room which was very clean and in a fantastic location close to the Colosseum. Reception was exceptionally helpful suggesting great value for money restaurants and offering us refreshments on arrival. Shower had very hot water and the room had heating for the slightly chilly December nights. There was a communal area to make unlimited hot drinks which was handy. Located on a road which was not disturbed by pedestrian or road traffic.Recommend this to anyone who is not looking for 5* star luxury type accomodation. If we are ever lucky enough to return to Rome we would stay here again.
- Veganinmypocket (10/5): A great couple get away! - RetRome are beautiful charming apartments that are geared up for the independent traveler. Compact rooms with a retro twist that are clean, tidy and have access to a shared kitchen which means you can make your own cup of coffee in the morning and a basic breakfast. Great location, only 7minute walk to the Colosseum...what more could you want!
Staff are welcoming and very helpful. They spent time emailing before arrival making sure we knew how to get there and checked if there was anything we needed in advance. If we return to Rome, which I am sure we will as after 3 days we still left feeling there was so much to see and do, we will be booking to stay here again! Thank you RetRome for a fantastic stay!
- Mario (8/5): Our stay in Rome - 2015 - On our arrival Lucia the receptionist made us feel at home, she offered us espresso gave us helpful tips, and arranged taxis for us.She made our stay a pleasant one!
The hotel was clean and comfortable.
It is very well located, walking distance to the Colosseum and all the tourists attractions, grocery store and restaurants.
- Karolis (10/5): perfect stay!!! - Good service, good location!
- Stephanie (8/5): Rome hotel/apartment close to colosseum - We stayed for three blnights in Rome close to colosseum and bus lines clean comfortable and overall great. Only negative was the hours of the lobby ate limited but affordable clean and staff was friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay again
- Kevin (8/5): Great location in Central Rome! - This place was a little tough to find as you access through a multi function building, but once we found it - it was fantastic. The room was great for traveling with two kids and the beds were very comfortable. On entry, the reception offered us a tasty espresso and they pointed us to all the local recommended restaurants and a grocery store. This latter was helpful as the room had a kitchenette that we made use of for breakfasts (we really needed some eggs in the morning and this isn't typically on the Italian menu). On the whole a very good experience!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Excellent location 100 yards from the Colosseum with loads of reasonably priced bars, cafés and restaurants nearby. Room cleaned daily providing you were out at the time but we were not given fresh bedsheets or replacement toiletries. Whilst we did not have much call for assistance staff were very friendly and helpful. Perfect for a short stay in this wonderful city.
- Verified traveler (2/5): HORRIBLE. - stayed in the family room on the reception level. Horrible smell in the room when walked in, ac smelled like mold, kitchen utensils & pots are so worn out & dirty. Reception is closed from 3-6pm & not 24h. Hot water not available all the time in the shower, called the emergency line and no one picked up. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. book a real hotel instead.
- forty something (2/5): retro hotel...nice room shame about the horrendous - Arrived in the evening to be greeted with note on door to say not in as i had not let them know when i was coming. However I had emailed and left a voicemail via their website 36 hours prior. Eventually greeted by someone who I was not even sure was related to the hotel. Could not pay for accomodation as card machine running out of battery so told to pay the next day( more than reasonable). left luggage in room and went out to dinner. came back to hotel, went to bed and here the hell started. Dumper truck noise and yelling drunk passers by went on up until 3am stopped and restarted at 6am..not a great start to the trip. Went to meet the manager (or so we thought) and asked to check out immediately. Would not only charge for the 12 hours stayed as their policy that we had to pay all amount. would not let us speak to manager, all correspondence via text. Promised us a phone call but not received..Girl on the desk was smiling (think with anxiety) but irritating none the less. We left upset, angry and without abode.
- chanandryan (10/5): Super cute and close to everthing. - This place was really cute and very clean. The TV was awesome. The staff were great! Awesome place to stay for a few days. Can't beat the price
- Emily (6/5): Retro Rome Apartment walking distance to Colosseum - I thought it was a good location for our three days in Rome. The office wasn't open the hours they told us so basically there was only staff for check in and check out and no one to answer a question for us when we had one. (We had a phone number though If we'd really needed anything). Don't buy their wine- it was awful.
- Happy Travelers (10/5): Right next to the Colosseum - The hosts of the B and B were so nice and helpful. They made us feel very welcomed. They helped us with maps and places in the area. We will definitely stay there on our next trip to Rome.
- Debbie (10/5): Efficient, clean, freindly - Great communication, terrific dinner recommendation by Sandra who was extremely helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A comfortable, great value room near to the Colosseum.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a very friendly and clean place, great location!
- Manolito11 (10/5): Really Good! - The concept is really cool, the rooms are really nice and really clean!
The bed is super confortable.
Everything is close, you have drug store, wine bar´s, restaurant´s and the Coliseum in a walking distance (5 min max)
The outside of the building has nothing to do with the rooms! When I first arrived I was expecting something old and bad, but big surprise!
I will stay again, no doubt!
- Kirsty (8/5): Very pleasant surprise - We were very happy about booking this hotel and felt very confident, until we were pulling our suitcases up the small hill to be confronted with a dull, brown and unloved building in front of us. Once we were inside, however, our worries started vanishing; the staff were so friendly and the interior has been really thought about (as there is a subtle retro theme). We were shown to our room which was perfect for us, if on the small side. Everything very clean and bright, felt very safe, and staff were always willing to help. They even had a small communal area with a mini fridge and some kitchen utensils which we thought was considerate. The area the hotel is in has everything you'll need, a pharmacy, a small supermarket and lots of restaurants. Overall would definitely recommend.
- 2 ROME-ing lovers (10/5): BEST HOTEL STAFF EVER!! - My husband and I stayed for a few nights at the end of our 2 week Europe road trip. We stayed in over a dozen hotels in Europe and this was our favorite. VERY short walk to the Colosseo and train station. We were able to get free parking right outside the hotel. We felt very safe walking around the hotel at night. The room was clean, we liked the retro decor, WIFI was fast. You have access to a shared kitchenette and courtyard. But the best part was DEFINITELY the STAFF! They were incredibly helpful and welcoming. They gave us several maps, directions, recommendations. Held our luggage for us after check out and offered us coffee/tea/water/bathroom even after we checked out.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Only good aspect is the location. - Hotel staff were rude and felt you were putting them out by asking questions. Bathroom door wouldn't lock and toilet seat was broken. The TV had no signal for channels however it did have a DVD player with a small collection of DVDs to choose from . AC was available. Very close to the colosseum and other landmarks.
- Jacob (8/5): Don't judge a book by its cover! - When my boyfriend and I walked up to the outside door, we were a little scared. However, as soon as we went in we were greeted by Angela, who sat us down and gave us information about the hotel and surrounding areas. I had accidentally booked a 5 night stay through hotels.com, and she was more than happy to refund the last night since we were only staying for 4 nights. The rooms are very modern and cute, and you have your own thermostat, which is nice because it gets HOT in Rome! The location is great - only about a 10 minute walk to the Colosseum metro stop. Give this place a try if you're heading to Rome!
- Chris (8/5): Retrome respite - We recently stayed in the Retrome apartment on the ground floor. The apartment was spacious and airy, although a little subterranean for my liking, not having any windows to speak of. The staff were excellent, greeting us on arrival with maps, information about the area and coffee. The rooms though, could do with an upgrade on the maintenance - the DVD did'nt work, the chairs and the bedhead fitting needed attention, and the shelves in the kitchen were about to collapse. The manner of the staff, the space in the apartment and the location made up for the shortfalls. We loved the area; everything was nearby, the local traders were friendly and helpful and I would recommend a stay at Retrome to others.
- Jean Carlos Herrera (8/5): Excellent Location! - Very good experience. Small hotel with great service; very helpful staff. The location is superb and the hotel perfectly suits the purpose for the sightseeing tourist. Would definitely come back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great simple hotel close to the colosseum - Great room, really clean, great price and really close to the colosseum. Friendly helpful staff that gave us a little map with recommended places to eat and other useful things. The recommended places were great, tasty local and a great prices!! Highly recommend!!
- Xtine (6/5): You get what you pay for. - This hotel was ok for the one night we stayed. As in the title, you get what you pay for. It was a cheap rate for a ok night. The A/C was broken and they had no other rooms to move us to so that was frustrating. Also the walls were quite thin so you could hear other guests in the hallways, but for an older building this should be expected.
The room itself was a decent size and the bed was comfortable enough. If I was in Rome for one night and/or on a tight budget, I would probably stay here again.
- Silverlouis (10/5): - The apartment / hotel was in a perfect location, a short walk to Colosseum and eventually walking to centre of town. I was met by Angela who was a delight and very welcoming. I loved the fact that it is a room in an apartment so there was a separate communal kitchen where I could store large bottles of water and Italian wine... The room was spacious, very clean and the bed was big and very comfortable, I had the room with the orange shower room. This was my first time in Rome and I could not have picked the perfect location. I liked the fact that I had my own keys for front door, I felt like I was living in Rome. I can't recommend it enough because of location. My only criticism is the inclusive breakfast which you need to get from a restaurant round the corner and I did not thing that was brilliant. I had option one which is a sweet croissant, and then cheese and meat in a very white sandwich plus one coffee and some strange looking juice. Retrome, perhaps you need to rethink where we should have breakfast but overall I had a wonderful experience.
- Karl (10/5): Great Hotel Close to all Attractions - It was a perfect family holiday. The accommodation was super!!! The staff (Angela and Sandra) were extremely helpful. The hotel was conveniently located near restaurants, grocery stores, train station and tourist attractions.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good location + good price + good service - The location of the hotel is quite good. The building is old and no elevator, but for Rome standards that's normal. The rooms are very comfortable in terms of size, and they feel renovated with a great sense of retro style. The service is quite friendly, although a bit unexperienced. Overall a great option.
