• Richard (2/5): - I'm judging this on a hotel scale, not a hostel scale. To say the rooms are tiny is an understatement. Cruise ship rooms are bigger. It's also not cheap. The area is under intense construction. There was a jack hammer going off at 7 am 10ft (4 meters) from my pillow! Having to carry our bags up 4 staircases to check in was something I could do without. Thank God we were only there 1 night!

• Robert (8/5): - Booked online to stay here during a brief stopover in Barcelona, and boy did I luck out in terms of being right in the middle of the action! I walked everywhere I needed to go, and it is right above a metro station. Yes it was noisy on the street at night (and until dawn, really), and the street is all torn up out front, but the convenience for someone visiting the city for the first time made up for it. The room was good and the staff helpful when I needed them. The breakfast was just meh for 10€, but I’m an American used to eggs, pancakes, etc. Would definitely return.

• Belinda (4/5): Great location, hotel not so great. - The location is great, just off Las Rambles. It was over priced for what it had to offer. The reception is not on ground level and you need to carry your bags up a few flights of stairs to get to reception. From there you are able to use a lift up to room. The room was extremely small. The bathroom was also small but the shower was in the same area with basin and toilet with no shower curtain. It was very small and at each shower everything got wet making floor slippery. The air conditioning was just OK but we weren’t there at the hottest time. There was no safe. The reception staff were helpful.

• MikeS9483 (10/5): Perfect situation - Overlooking Las Ramblas and a couple of mins from Mercat Boqueria . . . the hotel is ideally situated, is the Gothic Quarter literally 'over the road', El Born close too. The port and beach areas are a 20-min stroll. The hotel has a small lift . . . trust me, as a 74-year-old sightseeing all day it was welcome relief. Our visit was father-in-law/son-in-law in a shared room. Our room was spotlessly clean, TV, small balcony, plenty of shelves and suitcase storage and perfect for our four-night stay. We were out-and-about by 9 am every day to enjoy the food, drinks, sights and sounds of Barcelona. I cannot comment on breakfast at Hostal Mare because we'd decided to visit three different markets for our start to the day, I can only imagine it would have been good but, as said, cannot confirm. The front of house staff me met, Ivan and Claudio, were extremely friendly, spoke English, helpful and offered advice. Thank you. One issue we had during our stay was a leaking air-con unit in the bathroom. I reported the problem, two mins later housekeeping arrived to clean the leakage, quickly followed by a maintenance man who solved the problem within five mins. We were impressed with the service. Would we use Hostal Mare again? Absolutely.
• MARITES (10/5): - The hotel is very convenient right by Metro Liceu, o Las Ramblas, Latin Quaret and La Boqueria Market. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

I can see where the stairs could be a little tough for people, I had no issues with them, as it is just one flight to the front desk and then there was an elevator. The rooms are super tiny, but had everything we needed, bathroom was very nice. Could not have been happier with our choice to stay there

• 62jessra (6/5): Mixed Review - The entrance to the Hostal has many steps, maybe 15, before you can get to the reception. Even as someone, relatively young, it was very hard getting suitcases up the stairs. This is not made clear anywhere before booking. The size of the room was tiny. Yes, dimensions are shared on the website but who is going to take a tape measure out to check. I think that they have tried to make the rooms look larger on photographs. You just need to be honest with people about the small rooms. We were two of us in what I would definitely describe as a room for one. Hotel is clean. Breakfast was basic but good. I wouldn’t stay again because the room size is tiny and I felt like I was trapped in a box. The reception staff could have been slightly more helpful too. It is a shame when you arrive and the place is not what you expected from the website and it is disappointing too. Please be clearer in your description so people can make a more balanced decision before choosing to stay. It just made me feel a little deceived and if I had known about the steps and the room size and tiny lift I could had booked somewhere more suitable for our needs. Location is exceptional. No English TV channels at all. We weren’t in the room much but it is nice to have at least one channel to be able to listen to in the background and this has never happened to us before. Bathroom is compact but clean and lovely hot water and a powerful shower. The environmental aspect is nothing exceptional. Most other hotels do this but with plastic plants and a lack of plant based options I don’t think that they can state themselves as an eco hotel yet but it is good to see this as a consideration.

• shanellesua (8/5): Wonderful situated in La Rambla - Quaint spot in a great location. My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights while sightseeing around Barcelona and it was easy to get to as there’s a metro stop immediately in front of it. Note that you must leave your keys at the front desk whenever you leave the hotel, and can pick it up by confirming your room number. There’s an elevator but it’s tight (the two of us with our backpacks and carry on could barely squeeze in). Our room had a small balcony that overlooked La Rambla and we enjoyed a great sunrise. They are eco-friendly and you can determine how clean you’d like the room to be by indicating so on the door. There’s breakfast available for 8 euros per person or you can book the room with it included. The front desk spoke a variety of languages, including Catalan, Spanish, English, and Japanese.
• Jessica (8/5): Cozy - Carmen, the receptionist, was lovely, fun, and informative. The room was right on La Rambla and the only drawback was that pur beds were two separate twins. So hubs and I squeezed into one. ;)

• eskolinveeti (8/5): Great location and customer service! - Great location; it's right on La Rambla, but it's still quite quiet at night, so you can sleep well at all times. We stayed here for 5 nights during the Spanish Grand Prix, so our price per night was higher than usual, but our whole experience was still worth it. Great customer service, tasty breakfast selection, and the rooms were always clean. The only bad thing was that we had no mini fridge in our room, but still 4.5/5!

The private room was clean, but the shower and bathroom were quite small. The door to the bathroom was frosted glass, so privacy was a bit of an issue.

• M7804SXolgad (10/5): Kindness and Empathy - We were booked into a hotel with a check in time of 3pm. We arrived at 12.30am!!! No rooms available for the night. We walked around trying various hotels and Hostals in a strange city without success until we saw the sign for Mare Nostrum Hostal. We walked up the stairs and were greeted by Enric who obviously saw our desperation and offered us a room for the night. He even helped carry our luggage up the stairs. That kind of kindness you don't forget. The room was clean and had everything we needed for a very comfortable night. The next morning, we availed ourselves of a lovely breakfast and having confided in the multi lingual Ivan at reception of my infected tooth and extreme pain, he immediately searched for an emergency dental clinic with English speaking staff, obtained prices and booked my appointment within the hour. He was my hero that day! Thank you to Ivan and Enric for welcoming us to Mare Nostrum Hostal and in turn to Barcelona. Olga and Dave

• 13mandyh (8/5): Tiniest Room ever - Firstly the location was excellent located mid La Rambla with Metro right outside the door and buses conveniently close. The bus is the A2 straight from Airport to La Catalanya and then just 10 mins walk. The best way to view more sights is from open top bus. We went to the Dali Museum which is a train from Sants, a few stops along the Metro. So, the Hostal, Room 403 the smallest room ever, no room at bottom or either side of bed - but comfy mattress. I must admit if you like a good nights sleep maybe not book a hotel on the Rambla, it doesn’t sleep and you hear everything going on in the street, and for that matter next door rooms. No kettle for tea making, the tiniest telly on the wall, no wardrobe just 6 hangers in a unit, no drawers, the toilet you could not get one leg round the side while sitting, 1 pillow each and lots of stairs with very small lift. But, the staff were very accommodating, the breakfast was very ample, and there is a fantastic Lebanese Restaurant below called Hummas International.
• janreala (6/5): customer service was perfect - i understand its a hostal. staff were nice. everything was good even if the room smelled a bit like the canals when we first entered the room.there is also a chance that we got our bed bug bites from the bed or curtain in the room. but who knows. i hope not.

• Godofredo (2/5): Lift your suitcases a spiral staircase!!! - Tiny room with tiny bathroom. Thin walls hearing other people in other rooms. This hotel is located on the 1st floor of a bldg which includes going up a 28 step (normally 14 steps/flr in US) winding cement staircase (see photos) to access from the G (ground) floor hall entry. It even includes in the Hotel Facility Accessibility Description: “Elevator” for handicap even including a wheel chair photo (impossible). All Guests are required to manually lift their own individual suitcases up a 28 step spiral cement staircase to get to their 1st floor Check In desk. If you are traveling with heavy luggages (ie: 50lbs each allowance for airline), you will be expected to walk up your suitcases to the 1st floor where a tiny elevator is located to get from Flr # 1-4. Their is no porter service (had to beg for assistance & offer $10 tip). While the hotel discloses that an elevator is available from the 1st floor. It does not disclose that there are 28 steps spiral stairs for the guest to climb up to get to the 1st floor. There are over 70 photos provided by the hotel to show their rooms & facilities. However, no photos of the stairs? They indicate that it is on the welcome email after you book a non-refundable room. I even complained on the "welcome email" which was sent via Hotel.com & never received a rsponse from the Hotel. This false advertisement of “Handicap” accessibility is illegal and should be flagged by Travel websites.
• Colleen (10/5): - This property is right on Las Ramblas. Our room faced the action! We had to leave at 3am for a flight and the staff made breakfast available for us even at that early time. Highly recommend!
• Brian (8/5): - This hostel is exactly as advertised. You need to walk up 2 flights of stairs. Desk staff were excellent. Room small but very clean and adequate. There was a slight smell coming from shower drain which is in close proximity to head of bed. Drain smell does seem to be an issue in Barcelona. The breakfast was fantastic. Lots of healthy choices and “goodies”.

• Charity (10/5): Excellent Location and Management - This hotel was perfectly located on the Ramblas but with high-quality windows and air conditioning, you hardly noticed the noise. We were impressed with the included breakfast, welcome offering, and eco-friendly approach as well as the humanitarian outreach of the hotel’s management. We would absolutely recommend it and would stay here again when in Barcelona.
• Penny (10/5): - This property is right in the heart of old town Barcelona close to everything. The area is beautiful with lots of stores & restaurants. The hotel is only steps from a Metro stop which makes exploring economical & convenient. We cannot begin to express how very wonderful the staff is - so hospitable, kind, and over-the-top customer oriented. Know that there are some stairs to navigate so if you have mobility problems you might not be comfortable here. Breakfast included was good - European style with meats, cheeses, variety of rolls & bread, fruit and coffee/tea/juice. We hope to go back.

We asked different staff at reception to check the AC and got the standard answer that the city requires the AC to stay at 27 degrees. Finally, we investigated ourselves and noticed that many of the vents were closed.This issue could have easily been sorted if anyone had to just come and take a look at the AC. We requested no housekeeping and maintained the room ourselves for the 5 days we were there. On the last day we asked if we could check out half an hour later as we would be too early for our flight, and received a rude NO. After a 4 night stay, half an hour is not a lot to ask. I have to give credit to the man who works at the Breakfast area. He was amazing. Quick,efficient and very polite.
• Amanda (10/5): Clean and convenient - Great location. Some visible wear to the hotel but overall great. Breakfast was excellent with a view. Busy area! Steps away from metro station and nice walk to various tourists attractions. They lock the entry doors at night and only allow guests in the building which made me feel safe during my solo trip.
• Kirsty (8/5): - Great location on ramblas, I stayed for one night which was enough as the room was small. It has everything you need although a smell from bathroom. Which was a wet room - shower over toilet. I had a balcony and view of street and heard no noise, was really pleasantly suprised given the view of the street I had. I think for the price it was overpriced, however barcelona is generally expensive.
• Brenna (10/5): Nice stay! - This hotel was great! The room was quaint and had everything I needed. It was in a prime location and the staff was really friendly. My flight arrived really early so they let me store my bags on-site for free which was great! Breakfast was delicious and a great people watching spot too. I do wish that there was another lock on the doors though. I was traveling alone and people kept accidentally knocking on my door in the middle of the night. I would've felt more secure if so.
• marie (8/5): great location - this is a wonder hotel/hostel. real close to las ramblas. see photo. the breakfast was great. However....if you have a big/heavy suitcase, you do have to carry it up a flight of stairs before you get to reception. otherwise, there is a lift to your room.
• Daire (10/5): - Great stay. Fantastic location beside the metro. Rooms were quiet considering the noise outside. Rooms and beds were perfect for what we needed, small but comfy. Staff v friendly and the breakfast was a nice option in the mornings
