- g014213gg (8/5): Really happy we chose to stay at Matisse bb. - If youre looking for a place to sleep and shower to explore Rome for the whole day this is definitely a place to consider staying!
We booked months in advance direct at their website and got a really good price.
Location is perfect, every tourist attraction is nearly 15/20 minute walk away. Rooms are clean. We stayed in a ensuite bathroom bedroom which is all we needed.
We did have a small delay checking in as the owner was in a different property and had to wait for him to meet us to give us keys. However you’re best getting in touch and letting the owner know time of arrival!
Owner was helpful. Recommended a local cozy restaurant and few spots in Rome. Many thanks.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Centrale, comodo, personale disponibile, pulito, confortevole
- roberto (10/5): ottimo - Grazie di tutto a Roberto, simpaticissimo e gran brava persona!
- steh79 (8/5): Very clean and comfortable. Great location. - We arrived and were warmly greeted by the host Roberto. We arrived earlier than the check in time but Roberto allowed us to change, then leave our luggage so we could get straight out to explore Rome. Our room was well maintained and very clean and the beds were comfortable. We had a private toilet and shower but these were not in the bedroom, but situated outside the room. Our room had air conditioning. There was a kitchen available to use with toaster, kettle and microwave, along with tea and coffee, pastries, cereals, yogurts, milk, bread and cheese. The hotel is situated on a main route of Rome. It was a 10 minute walk to Termini and a 2 minute walk to Republic metro station. The colosseum and Trevi fountain was a 15 minutes walk away from Matisse. There was 2 supermarkets near by, also a mcdonalds, and many restaurants. The area around hotel was clean, well lit and felt very safe. Roberto was on hand with information and for any advice, and he allowed us to leave our luggage in the property on our last day so we could spend our last day in Rome.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The location and security of Matisse was excellent with a lovely Romanesque courtyard gated from the main road, Rosella greeted us warmly :) But once inside the property was lacking any feel of quality really, not even any doors on the wardrobe.... This was only Bed and Breakfast after all, but we have stayed in better in Blackpool lol. The 'breakfast' was none existent when we left at 8 am to meet with excursions and had it been there only would have consisted of plain plastic wrapped cornettis (plain croissant one per person), yogurt, tea and coffee. To summarise, Matisse gave us a great base to explore from but without any communal area or comfort to speak of and lack of breakfast we can only recommend it as a place to get your head down.
- Suzana Lousano (2/5): Mausoléu - Localização excelente apenas. Me senti num
O proprietário é simpático, mas jamais me hospedarei neste hotel novamente.
- Nico (4/5): - Very disappointing experience. You would expect a nicely prepared breakfast with fresh pastry and cappuccino from a B&B right? Well, it is a self service, no fresh pastries, low quality milk, yogurts and juices; by the way you have to clean your own dishes in the small kitchen that you share with others. Not what you want to do when you pay $300 per night and your are on vacation. The bathroom is separate from your room and the doors are very noisy (old building), so you wake up the ret of the family when you have to go to the restroom at night. There is no TV in the bedroom. The mattresses and pillows are really hard and the room was on a noisy back street (restructuring the building across the street). The only good thing is the location. You can walk to the Colosseum, Palatine Hill/Fori Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona within 20 min. Overall we do not recommend this B&B, especially for older people since you have to climb stairs to go from ground to second floor (no elevator).
- Signe (8/5): Wel.. - Matisse B&B has a very nice location. Walking distance to city center and bus right outside for the Vatican. Difficult to find during the evening in lack of signs on the door (though sign to other hotel in same building). Some of the photos look like it's been taken from the other hotel, since it doesn't look anything like the inside of Matisse B&B. Breakfast was instant coffee/the (you had to heat the water in a kettle) and a plastic wrapped croissant. Not really worth the price and not enough when you have a long day ahead of you. Very clean and no bad smells.
The receptionist was kind to explain the city on a map, but beside that he talked bad about our country and people - don't know if it was sarcasm, but not that comfortable.
The bed was very hard and uncomfortable.
Bedden waren prima. ontbijt was ok.
- 220billiesuew (10/5): Place to stay - I found this place, last minute, but was so glad it found me!!! I stayed there for 10 days and loved it. It is an old convent that was turned into small boutique hotels, businesses, and apartments. Being an older, single female traveling alone, it fit all of my needs of safety. Roberto was such an incredible host!!! He made sure the kitchen was stocked, rooms cleaned, and gave great suggestions of places to eat and go. He also showed me a nice slice of Italian everyday life. I found him gracious, funny and very Italian!!! He arranged transport to the airport. He even took other guests to the hospital and stayed with them all night!!! That was going way beyond what any host would do.
I hope if I go back to Rome, this place will be available.
Thanks Roberto!!
Assez bruyant.
- bettercallsaul2 (2/5): Avoid at all costs - Arrived at Matisse B&B only to be greeted by the Italian equivalent of Basil Faulty but unfortunately he wasn’t funny. He was rude and obnoxious. We were shown to a room on the first floor. On the surface the room looked clean but on closer inspection there were hairs and dust in the bathroom. There was also a strange unpleasant smell in the room which was possibly coming from the drains in the bathroom.
There were no yoghurts as stated on the website only croissants which appeared early in the morning. We were told to use the Irish pub on the corner if we wanted breakfast. The room or corridor didn’t look anything like the pictures on the internet and there was no communal area to sit in as stated. The website suggests that the reception is staffed and it wasn’t. Despite having booked to stay in the Matisse B&B (which appears to be on the second floor) we were put in the Artemis B&B. Having arrived in the evening we were tired and not in a position to challenge him.
We overheard him being pleasant to other travellers but witnessed seeing two distressed females calling the police to resolve a disagreement over the bill. He has absolutely no conscience and I would go so far as to say that he appeared unhinged. I would not recommend staying here particularly if you are a female only party.
- Karen Mairim (10/5): - Bien comunicado.
Recomendado.
- carolemcg18 (10/5): Strongly recommend! - This is not my first time staying at Matisse and I hope i will be returning again very soon. Every time I have been made to feel so welcome and at home and I love the owners approach and kindness.
The rooms and all communal areas are very clean and fresh. As a solo female traveller it is important that I feel safe and am in a central, easy to reach location and the Matisse ticks all of these boxes.
Everything else that’s on offer ie free WiFi, generous breakfast, heating/air conditioning, local knowledge and tips, transport arranging etc are all an added bonus!
Thank you so much to all at the Matisse for another wonderful stay...Roberto, you are the best, I cannot thank you enough!
- Ivaylo (8/5): - Simple set up but good, great location which allows you to explore the city easily.
- Mike (4/5): - Bait-and-switch.
This is NOT what i expected at all. Breakfast was a bottle of hot water with instant coffee bags and small plastic wrapped bread located at the beginning of the hallway. No separate breakfast area as pictured on travelocity. This place is also known under several different names. Guess it depends on your arrival time where you will end up. Reception was not very friendly. Do not book this. Way overpriced for what you get.
Also, i learned to never ever book a flight together with a hotel room! You will get a "hop-on" hotel for way more $$ than you would pay if booked separately. Do not fall for that. Travelocity should ban bait-and switch members on here. This is deceptive and false advertisement.
- GP2303 (8/5): Matisse B&B in Central Rome. - The Matisse B&B is the best place if you are looking to rest of a night, shower, have a quick breakfast, tour Rome for most of the day. We were a family of 4 and Roberto the owner is a very good and helpful man.
It is Central to Rome's bus and train stations 5 to 10 minute walk (we caught a train back to Fumincino Airport only 14 euros per person kids are free on a direct train Leonardo Express first class easy to use automated ticket machines - select English flag to get tickets) and as soon as you step out of Matisse B&B turn right, walk for a couple minutes there is a COOP market to get essentials and a pharmacy which came in use for my 6 year old Nathan.
Loads of shops to eat, drink and buy clothes like Jack Jones on the street called "via nationale."
By the bus station 5 to 10 minute walk, there is also a hop on and hop off tour bus which takes and stops off at all the iconic sites in Rome for 20 euros from 9am to 8pm, Young children on the green bus are free.
Matisse B&B is located in the perfect central location. It is a 2 star but feels like a 3 star as rooms are spacious and have air con and the beds are comfy too. It is reasonably priced and again Roberto helped us out here aswell. The Matisse is also local to the Trivi Fountain and Spanish Steps...
If i ever want to see Rome again with my family. I know where i would stop. The Matisse B&B.
Well done Roberto.

- Verified traveler (6/5): - Don’t recall seeing that the toilet was not ensuite and that you had to walk past communal areas to get to and from the shower
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice Hotel ... great lo
- TravelingCarrs (10/5): Great location, easy walk from Central Train Station - Stayed one night on our way through Rome. An easy walk from the Central Train Station. A bit difficult to find, and a bit confusing once you arrive - but we arrived at the same time as another couple so our host was not answering the bell. Once inside, the place was very nice. The room was small but clean - and the bathroom was great. Wifi was great as well. Would definitely recommend a stay.
- roxanacristinap (10/5): Perfect location - If you want to stay in heart of Rome this is the perfect place with quick acces to all of beautiful places. The host is very friendly and helpful. Also here you are acces to breakfast and this location has good value for money. Well i hope you enjoy this location as much as we do !
- arescattalin (10/5): Perfect location - When i arrived, there was a sweet women who waited us very early in the morning, she gave us a beautiful room.
The apartment was very clean, there was no noise from people in the morning or at night, the staff i would rank them 5 stars because they were always when i needed them.
Nice beds,very warm,no noises,very clean,very good position for what i nedeed.
I can’t wait booking again with them.
- Dieny (10/5): Ótima localização - Hotel em ótima localização pertinho do metrô e do centro. E dos principais pontos turísticos. Da pra fazer tudo a pé. Recomendo.
A única vantagem é a localização.
- Patricia (6/5): Good location, rude host - We stayed at the hotel for three days, when we arrived, we called the host and he received us decently, asking whether we wanted a room with a private bathroom inside the room or a private bathroom outside the room (such things were not specified in the website, we already paid for a private bathroom) but he said that if he wanted to have the bathroom inside, we could pay a bit more to fix it...
He asked for the city tax and our passports to take a picture, I wouldn't recommend anyone to give the passport because he would take a picture of it (to register the people) because it contains a lot of private information.
Apart from that, the location is really good for the price and the rooms are nice. I would recommend to stay in the hotel but not for long.
- M3210NDjackw (10/5): perfect location - Stayed at this b&b for three nights from the 6th of nov 2017. It is in a great location short walking distance from the main station and the main sights. The room was very clean and the breakfast was good We were greeted by the owner Roberto who could not have made us any more welcome .Excellent for a short stay.
Geoff & Jack [ London ]
- RossB1107 (2/5): From Russia with love - Location: Perfect for exploring the city on foot
Room (9): Clean but not comfortable
Ensuite: Perfectly practical except for running out of hot water once. Shower temperature gauge seemed to have a mind of it's own.
Breakfast: individually-packed croissants are great to grab and have as a snack later but when you can eat at a cafe for £2 why would you bother making breakfast?
However, and it's a big however, noise travels. The street noise was bearable with closed windows but it was the noise of fellow residents that ruined our stay. Unfortunately, a pair of terribly rude young Russian men were staying in the adjacent room (7) which did not have an ensuite. As well as playing very loud music from their separate bathroom a foot from our door at 01:30 am, they repeatedly played loud music on the afternoon and frequently through the night. This seemed to continue for the duration of their stay (three nights whilst we were there) despite the efforts of fellow residents. I feel that management should have removed them from the property.
Whilst I appreciate that the management cannot guarantee the quality of other residents, the the noise transfer down the corridor from the living room to the bedroom was such that someone having a conversation would keep you awake.
Overall, I agree with some previous reviews that mention how a few well taken photographs of an ornately decorated room can give the overall impression of a fine establishment. This place felt very cheap throughout and in desperate need of both some soundproofing and some honest marketing.
Would I stay again? You couldn't pay me to.
Would I recommend it? Only as a very basic place to stay and on he condition that they've read this article.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great B&B near all the sites - Loved our stay at Matisse. Our rooms were large and clean, had a nice living area and kitchen to make coffee. In a great location to all the sites! Bathrooms were outside of room but very close and that didn't bother us.
Viennoiseries industrielles. Nous n'avons vu personne le matin . Sinon la literie était correcte.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice. In a good location in the city and secure. - This would be a nice place to stay if you are familiar with Rome already and just want an inexpensive place. The hotel staff were basically unavailable and unreachable. The only person we saw after check-in (for 5 days) was the housekeeper. I needed help with something, but could never get in touch with anyone at the number given in the contact information.
- Noreen M (6/5): Not what I expected. - It wasn't what I expected for it to be. Breakfast was a few minutes walk away from the building, coffee and a croissant is all you get. They tell you very specifically to turn all the lights off and the air conditioning off whenever you leave the room. Someone walks into the unit whenever; early morning or late at night to go to the supply room when we were supposed to have the entire unit to ourselves. It wasn't pleasant; I had to tell my family to lock their individual rooms at night.
- Lionel (2/5): fake pictures - none of the photos on the ads are from the hotel. the breakfast room is a corridor with 2 bar tables.
unhelpful and unfriendly staff.
breakfast is just low cost juice, low cost croissants with hot water (for cheap tea or chimical coffee)
- hermogenes (8/5): Buen precio y buena ubicación - Muy bien
- 481jacquiem (6/5): Birthday treat to Rome - The Matisse B & B is a good, basic accommodation. It provides everything you need for a short stay. The bedrooms are very clean and not all have ensuite but our bathroom was just outside so wasn't a problem. They provide an adequate continental breakfast. Tea, coffee, bread, croissants, yoghurt, Orange juice, jams, salami... it's a good choice. The kitchen is open 24 hrs so you can get a snack or a drink when you want.
The location is fantastic as you are a short walk to a lot of the attractions in Rome. Plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to choose from..
I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great basic accommodation.
- garyfS4670KL (10/5): Gary Fogarty - Had a great stay at the Matisse rooms are very clean and not to far to walk to the city. Will definitely stay here again. Kitchen was clean with breakfast available when you wanted plenty of cereal drinks tea coffee and fruit juice.
- Yi-Hsin (10/5): - Close subways. Located is good
- Blobs52 (6/5): Roman holiday - not as expected - Ok so perhaps with hindsight we were a little naive, looking at the website the images were rather quirky.
The reviews we read were mixed in praise and condemnation.
We are not familiar with the system of hotels and bed and breakfast in Italy, that's part if the journey experiencing different cultures and environments.
We booked a 4 night break as a birthday treat for my 85 year old mother who has never visited Rome before.
Upon arriving we were greeted at the gate by the manager who showed us to the (hotel), located in a large building accommodating a number of 'hotels" and apartments. We were then told that there was an error in the organisation and that my partner and I would have to stay in another part of the building block.
My mothers room was clean, tidy and secure, we were rather hesitant though in leaving her on her own in a strange and unusual building. However, she assured us that she would be ok.
My partner and I were shown to our room - the reception room which was decorated as per the images that we had seen I online. It's surprising how a well taken photograph can deceive, yes the image was correct but the room was significantly smaller than expected. Our room was ok and we did have our own private bathroom BUT was not en suite and extremely small, but again clean and tidy.
The following day we were relocated to a room next door to my mother with no problems and we did have en suite so all was good.
So Matisse appears to have two units in this building which I imagine were originally apartments, the one with the quirky look as seen online is on the second floor and none of the rooms as far as we could see had en suite !
The second where we stayed for the remainder of our stay is much better and whilst it's decor is not as unusual as the unit (as mentioned above), is very nice.
Bed and breakfast - yes we had our own bedrooms and, in the end were en suite, and we had access to breakfast.
In the unit where we stayed for the bulk of our trip has a fridge, cups, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk, juice, croissants and yoghurt and was effectively self service. The drawback being that it was in the (lobby area) and you only had two airpots of hot water and no means getting any more boiling hot water. The airports soon cooled and were not regularly replenished which meant that by the evening you could either have a luke warm drink or go without.
The other unit where we stayed whist somewhat "unusual" did have a separate kitchen where you could also have, in addition to all that's mentioned above, cereal and toast AND A KETTLE !
So did we enjoy our stay in Matisse bed and breakfast ?
Location wise it cannot be faulted easy access to the metro and bus stops, situated in easy walking distance of the main attractions and sights.
A good choice of restaurants and shops in general on your doorstep.
Quiet and clean.
We loved Rome and despite its shortcomings Matisse provided us with an excellent base from which to explore this amazing city.
Would we recommend Matisse YES provided the visitor understands and accepts its shortcomings. This is not a typical bed and breakfast as expected in the UK but we are not in the UK
- aghdasniknjad (10/5): Special experience! - Special decorations! We love the sculpture, carpets and the ambient!
Room was big, quiet , clean . Breakfast was simple but offers 24hours.
Roberto was nice guy , he called driver for us to airport and printed tickets for us .
We will come back for sure
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not as described. No real breakfast. - The room along a corridor is located in a great spot near all the sites we wanted to see. However the "b&b" should have only been called a "b" as there was not a full breakfast as I do not consider yogurt and a cheap Croissant a breakfast. There manager was very rude on our arrival and was difficult to find as it is located in a building along with a lot of other "hotels". There was no table to eat your "breakfast" and no staff on site past noonish if you had any issues. The experience itself was a let down, as we had to eat breakfast out to give us the fuel for a good day in Rome. We would never return here or recommend it to anyone. In fact I will be seeking some money back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice location for sightseeing nice b and b - Very good base for sightseeing shopping and restaurants metro and taxis all close by an excellent base to stay in rome to see as many sights in a short time ie our 3 day stay we enjoyed
- barborah361 (6/5): nothing special, good for one night - Hotel is a bit updated, with no heating (so take a warmer clothes in the winter).
Quite an old-fashion decoration in common living-room area.
Communication with reception was a little chaotic.
On the other hand, you have breakfast included- in the kitchen you can use kettle and make a coffe or a toast.
Location is great, it´s walking distance to Piazza Venezia and Termini Station.
Price is good.
Not a luxury stay, but worth the price.
- Jim (8/5): Close to the center of Rome - Loved being here! It's like a little museum, also very close to the center of Rome! Everything is walking distance!
- Laurajp86 (4/5): Not what was advertised! - We arrived at the B&B, the entrance looked lovely and was situated on a nice street with bars and restaurants. We had to ask someone where the Matisse was as the building was very confusing. Once we were outside we rang the bell repeatedly and waited for 20 mins without no answer. I then called the mobile number provided and a gentleman answered and arrived quickly. Apparently we should have rang the bell c12 at the entrance, but nowhere on the hotel details is this stated.
We started to check in, which was in the lovely room with all the paintings and statues. The gentleman then grabbed my suitcase and asked us to follow him, his English was not very good. He then lead us out of the building and on to the street, we were very confused and asked where we were going and he said to your room follow. We followed him to another building which was on a completely different street in another block of apartments and hotels.
The room was in a tiny corridor with 3 other rooms. The room itself was OK, nothing like the pictures on the website! It came with a private shower room, which had a funny smell to it! We had no access to the main building, which meant no 24 hour breakfast as stated on the website and no access to the lovely communal areas. We were given tickets for breakfast at the local Irish bar, which consisted of a coffee and a croissant! This was definitely not a way to fill up in the morning before exploring and not what was advertised! Also if we had any questions we had no one at the B&B to ask!
The hotel itself is in a great location, but if you are going to book there I would ask before hand which room you are in. We were just grateful we were so busy that we didn't spend much time in the room. I would not book there again!
- evangelosa976 (8/5): Dr - I visited Rome with my wife for a long weekend and we stayed in this small b&b. It is conveniently located near the main station and from there you can access all the tourist sites with a reasonably brief walk. The actual b&b is part of a larger building that fits perfectly the old charm of Rome. We had a small room but it was very clean, very quiet in the evening and the owner had generously provided all the small things to make our stay as comfortable as possible. There is a kitchen which is accessible of all guests and there is always drinks, snacks and light breakfast available 24/7. It is wonderful after a long day and night out to have a cup of tea before you go to sleep. If you want modernity and luxuries is not the place to stay. If your expectations are covered in a safe, well located and welcoming small place you have perhaps got the best of all. I hope you enjoy as we did!

- Verified traveler (10/5): Fantastic location - We came to Rome for my 40th Birthday, we had a fantastic time and would love to come back
- calsilver77 (8/5): Nice place to stay! - Central place to stay~ close to termini and the republicca metro stop but does have the potential to be difficult to find. The b&b has many different businesses in the same complex so ring the buzzer for Matisse. The room wasn't exactly what we expected ~ although clean and basic and I grew to like it. Communal area very lovely and help yourself buffet style breakfast (24hr) all good. The manager explained things very thoroughly and was very helpful with our shuttle service arrangements.
- U9123MAstephenb (10/5): A dodgy start, oh, but what a lovely hotel!! - The taxi driver was unsure he had brought us to the right place (we were unsure!) but it's because the entrance at night time (we arrived after 10pm) is misleading. But, the our driver rang the hotel and confirmed everything and the owner came down to open the door. From there, apart from the inner city tax charge that we were unaware of (keep that in mind, but you do have to pay it by law, 3.5 euros per person per night, so not a vast amount) the room was very nice, the beds very comfortable and the lounge area relaxing and the kitchen was open at all times, not just for breakfast, just help yourself to coffee, tea, drinking-chocolate, milk, sugar, cereals, bread ...croissants (it's all included in the price). It is very central and you can walk to everywhere you would wish to go or see...the man who runs it was very accommodating and the standard of cleanliness very high. He made sure that our taxi back was sorted and allowed us to leave our luggage at the hotel on our last day, because although we had to check out by 10am, we weren't leaving Rome until 7pm....very kind, very helpful and very thoughtful. The price was most agreeable too! Would I stay there again? Yes, I would! most definitely...a big thank-you to all concerned.
- Kim (4/5): Room Clean but that's you can say about this place - We arrived late and had to buzz for the owner as there is no reception. We had booked a twin room and were given a double, when I said that this was wrong, the owner said he would change it the next day. We never got a change, but he did put an extra bed in the room.
The Bed & "Breakfast" is a bit of a joke. There is a very small area where there is a fridge and a counter. From here you have to make your own tea & coffee and there are only pre-packed croissants (jam filled, flavour only) and in the fridge there is a choice of 2 yoghurts and bottled water. That's your lot!!!
There is no reception, so no one to speak to and couldn't get hold of the owner very often; my friend and I had to leave written messages on the counter if we needed anything.
The pictures on the website look great, but we had to ask the owner where the lovely lounge area was, as we couldn't find it. He did eventually show it to us, but we couldn't access it, as it was in a different part of the complex and our keys didn't fit the door for this area.
I definitely would not stay here again or, indeed, recommend it.
Definitely "No Stars" from me
- Robert (6/5): Not my style. - Bathroom down the hall.
Breakfast sparce.
- Mark (10/5): Excellent location, excellent hotel and stay! - Matisse B&B is a nice gem located in a large building with several other hotels. There are several levels of security/locked doors which I appreciated. The hotel is located just steps from a bus stop and about a block from the metro in a location the I consider ideal for accessing all of the Roman sights. Roberto was a great host and accessible to my needs at the push of a button. There is a communal refrigerator stocked with juice, water and yogurt which can be accessed anytime. There are also croissants and coffee available. Our stay also included a daily free continental breakfast at a restaurant across the street. Our room (the one closest to the refrigerator) was spacious and a had a moderately large en-suite bathroom (for European standards).
- Paul (8/5): B&ab in the heart of Rome, what more do you want?M - Matisse B&B is ideal for people that want a comfy bed, a shower and an unhurried continental breakfast,it's clean and you are pretty much left to get on with it, in a fantastic location so you can walk to nearly all the sights and if you don't fancy walking the metro and buses are a minutes walk away, would book again if/when in Rome again.
- Rob (8/5): Great location, comfy bed - Nice basic hotel, staff friendly and explained everything well, especially the cryptic door lock. Ended up in the adjacent Matisse hotel, which was slightly off via Nazionale, no issues though. Had no water one day, but was quickly sorted. Nice little hotel for the price
- Verified traveler (8/5): Hotel is In a very good location - It was a nice stay at the hotel. The room was clean and warm.
- Lewis (8/5): An unpretentius gem - Friendly, helpful staff. Incredibly well located for seeing sights of Rome. Very quiet at night. Clean well kept rooms and public areas.
- Carol and Leo (8/5): Safe, boutique, near train station, walk to sites - We were met by the caretaker who gave us all the information for getting in and out, finding things in town. We were offered an upgrade to a room with a private bath and shower for a couple of euros more a night. It was worth it. Kitchen available 24-7. Walking distance to all attractions including Coliseum, Pantheon, Borghese Villa, museums. Good shopping including local grocery shopping within two blocks. Bed was comfortable and clean, water was hot for shower, secure windows to eliminate street noise at night. We had no complaints at all.
- Jill (10/5): Matisse a little gem - Great host in Roberto who couldn't have done more to make our stay in Rome a memorable one. Room was clean, large, comfortable bed and all day (and night) access to food and coffee/tea made it feel like home. Great place, great host.
- sammy (10/5): Nice hotel, and in the heart of Rome! - Location location location. When staying in rome you cant get any closer to the action then at matisse b+b. Walking distance to everything and beautiful restruants down stairs. The staff were very helpful. And the rooms were very clean and not to mention nice and air conditioned which is need in the hot rome summer. I will definitely be using matisse next year when i visit rome again next year.
- Teresa (8/5): Great stay aND great price - Did a one night stay in Rome and found this b&b. There are room options for an outside bathroom so be careful booking. In a large safe gated building and very clean. Beds a little stiff but you aren't in Rome to sleep right!! They showed us on a map the best places to go to. Free coffee and bread which is nice. Nice walking distance to the sites and great area for food and shopping. On a busy road so easy to find and you feel safe coming back at night. Def recommend
- Verified traveler (6/5): ehh - Not ready for us to arrive even though I emailed him to let him know our arrival time and he responded.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Close to terminal - Good. No elevator to the 2nd floor but then there is. Shared bathroom but clean.
- Mirela (10/5): Great days in Rome @Matisse B&B - We are a couple and stayed for 3 nights. The room was clean, warm and cosy. The area was really protected, since the building was near Defense Ministery. Also we could very easily reach any place since it's located in The heart of Rome. 10 min walk from Piazza Venezia, close to Colosseo. We really enjoyed our staying and we will definitely come back. Oh, and breakfast was delicious. We strongly reccomend Matisse B&B.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location and Management provided good services. Will stay next time. Thanks
- polina (10/5): Perfect location and best host ever! - It was a fast choice for me based on location and cost! And it was best luck: very central and easy place to stay. 7-10 walking from main railway station and 3 min to nearest metro. My room was comfy with simple and clear design, very clean. The host, Roberto was extremely helpful, he helped me with arranging my 1day fast sightseeing tour and gave me many really useful tips! Thank you so much, Roberto!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent & Personalised Service - On arrival we received a free upgrade to the Matisse's sister site bear the Colloseum. This conveniently located Bed and Breakfast was a real treat to stay in. The rooms and en suite bathrooms are nicely furnished and were serviced very well once a day whilst the owener was incredibly helpful to all his guests. Breakfast consisted of cereals, toast, croissants, tea, coffee and yoghurt and most of these items were made available to guests throghout the day.
- Salah Al-Ali (10/5): Great location and fantastic owner named Roperto. - Me and my wife like it so much. In our next visit to roma we will stay in same hotel.
- Verified traveler (2/5): No reservation held! - Turned up to the hotel with a confirmed voucher from Expedia only to be told there is no booking held for us. The hotel claimed to have tried to phone us - not true. They were totally dishonest and such a bad end to our trip.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Lack of info! - Rooms are old but clean. Washroom and shower is separated from room and no privacy since you have to walk and kind of pass the sitting area to get to washroom. No fresh coffee, you can boil water in kitchen and make instant coffee. You also have to wash your own dishes. Hotel.com never mentioned about separated washroom on their adds!
- John Z (10/5): Close to alot of must see sights - Roberto was an excellent host - owner. Can not say enough nice things about this gentleman. He really cared about each one of his guest. I will stay here again in a heartbeat.
- Verified traveler (8/5): A nice place at the right price - Spent one night at matisse and found the accommodation suitable for purpose. Quiet, clean, friendly and private. The basics like coffee, tea, cereal, bread etc provided as well
as a computer and internet access. Really ideal location for sight seeing, shopping, restaurants, bars, train station. The owner was very friendly as well, the B&B did not feel too much like a low budget place, quite lovely actually
- Gina (8/5): - Very central to major sites, bus, metro. Very basic room and bathroom but sufficient. Easy going, friendly, clean Help yourself to breakfast. Roberto very friendly and helpful.
- Lynette (4/5): Three Fat Ladies European Tour - Felt the advertisement was very misleading and accomodation over priced. Location was good, however rooms were basic and private bathrooms were accessed outside your room. The kitchen was very small and apart from nice orange juice the selection was poor and the same loaves of bread, croissants etc. were there for the 4 days of our stay - no fresh supplies. The sitting room is also small, hot and oppresive. We stayed in a wide variety of accomodation during our month in France and Italy and Matisse B & B is the only one I am giving an unfavourable report, it was a disappointing end to our holiday.
- Dick (6/5): An OK B&B close to Roma Termin - The Matisse is conveniently located near the train station and is also walking distance to most attractions. The rooms were clean and the air conditioning worked very well on the hottest Rome August days. Roberto was very helpful and friendly.
The biggest issue I had was that the rooms were not what I thought I booked. My Expedia reservation said that I had reserved a "Two Bedroom Apartment with Kitchen and Private Bathroom - Free Breakfast". What I got was 2 separate bedrooms connected to the reception/common room that is shared with other guests and "private" bathooms located down the hall. There is a small kitchen (shared with other guests) with an assortment of packaged baked goods and milk, fruit drink, cream cheese and butter in the fridge. It was ok but I don't think you can describe this as a "Two Bedroom Apartment with Kitchen and Private Bathroom".
The bedrooms were clean and reasonably sized but were quite spartan and a little run down. Overall, not a bad place to stay but not what I thought I had booked.
- C (8/5): HOTEL MATISSE - CAVOUR - We arrived at the Matisse - Nazionale to be told that we could have a room here, but it wasn't ready and the bathrooms are private but not in the room. We could move to the Hotel at Cavour. The room at the Cavour was small but clean. The location was excellent, Roman Forum and Colosseum at the end of the road, 2-5 minutes walk. The all day breakfast is basic but convenient after a long day sight seeing to come back & have a cuppa and toast. The noise from the road was load and didn't quieten down at night, the double glazing needs to be fitted properly, so if you are a light sleeper ask for a back room. Strange smell in the hall way, but never came into the apartments. Tried the Chinese Restaurant across the road, DON'T bother, poor service, poor food, but cheap. BISTRO 318, was good service and nice food. Reasonable priced & Recommend.
- Megan (10/5): Good, handy location, comfortable room, very clean bathroom! - My husband and I stayed at the Matisse B & B in September. First...it is a great location...walking distance from the train and metro, in a shopping district with easy access to shopping, restaurants, etc. The Matisse B & B is on a busy street, but to get to it, you enter the building, go through a pleasant courtyard, and then go upstairs...so it is more quiet than you would imagine. The room was pleasant, comfortable and clean. The bathroom was spotless. This is a self-catering B & B...again, the kitchen area was very clean, and it had everything you could want for a breakfast: croissants, coffee, orange juice, fruit, cold cereal, etc. This worked out well, also, because you could have a snack when you returned in the evening. For people like my husband and I, who just want to eat and then head out to see Rome's attractions, it worked perfectly. Our room was not fancy, but it was very clean and very comfortable. We had our own bathroom, and while it was not ensuite, it was just across the hall. A plus was that our room was air-conditioned. The owner, Roberta, was very helpful and nice. The courtyard in the building itself is very peaceful and pleasant....you would never know it is there when you walk by on Via Nazionale. We will stay here again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Charmless - This "bed and breakfast" is charmless. The breakfast is packaged foods left in a kitchen that you make yourself. The bathrooms are private however they are in the hallway, you have to leave your room to use them. The location was central and the price very reasonable, everything else was lackluster.
- Jose (10/5): Great stay - Matisse B&B was a great place to stay in Rome.
Central location right near La Repubblica. The room was very large and comfortable, clean and even had a mini fridge. Bathrooms were clean as well. The B&B was spacious and seemed to be empty, which made it feel like you had your own apartment in Rome. Breakfast was a well-stocked counter with croissants, toast and cereal and fridge with water, juice and milk. An iMac in the lounge was great for all internet needs. The guy that runs the place is really good as well.
The only flaw was the lack of wifi, but you can plug your computer (mobile devices are left out though).
Great stay and place all in all...
- Clara & Ricardo (10/5): Great place to stay in Rome - Last month, in August 2010, we were so lucky to visit the city of Rome and stay for a week at the Matisse B&B. It was a wonderful experience, even to meet Roberto the owner, who helped us with everything. He gave us direcction, adviced us on city tours and answer all kind of questions about shopping. The B&B was super clean and the location couldn't be better. Hope we can go back soon and by sure, we'll stay a Matisse B&B.
- Caleb (10/5): A Great Value and Excellent Location - I just spent six nights at the Matisse B&B's Via Nazionale location and really enjoyed my time there. Due to the price I expected much less, but I turned out to be pleasantly surprised.
The facility has many positives. It was neat, clean, and had a lot of character. The owner was extremely nice and responsive to any needs that we or other guests had. The 24 hour access to coffee and pastries was also helpful, and there was a common kitchen that we and other guests used to make meals if we needed to (please note that there was no stove but there was a water boiler). Best of all, although its address is on a major street, the rooms themselves front a quiet rear lane, so there was no noise at night.
The only drawback was that our particular room's private bathroom was separated from the room, with the toilet in one room and the shower in another. However, this was only a minor inconvenience.
