Guest Reviews
- Nathan (10/5): - The hotel is fantastic, it's in great condition considering it's age. The staff are more attentive than at most of the 5 star hotels I've stayed at and the food options on site are exceptional. Especially the small bar. The rooms are a little dated but it's more like being in a movie set during the showa period than run down everything has been kept up well.
While it's in essentially the inner core of Tokyo its in a quiet location, you don't have endless bar and restaurant choices in the neighbourhood but you can get to places like kanda station in a 10 minute walk and it's only a 5 minute walk to the chuo line which is incredibly useful.
I think the Hilltop is actually quite special.
- Peter (10/5): - Stayed in a traditional room and it was a great experience with enough space. Breakfast was excellent both when provided by room service or in the breakfast rooms. The three restaurant had excellent food.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (4/5):
- carlosk582 (10/5): This hotel worth historical stay - The hotel is very close to the station and you can see it when you go up the slope a little.
The quiet entrance has a very calm atmosphere and elegant customers hang out.
The furnishings in the room are also old and have a historical feel, but they seem to work.
It's a good idea to stay overnight and try the famous tempura
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything I go there 2 orv3,times a year and it’s all perfect. Due to bad weather I ate at one of there excellent restaurant often and they were all superb. The staff really look after your needs without a lot of fuss.
- Verified traveler (10/5): impeccable - impeccable. it is always lovely to stay at yamanoue.
- TS (10/5): - Small hotel with excellent quality of service. Amazing Japanese breakfast.
- GAAAG9 (10/5): Old fashion, very clean and amazing breakfast - Rooms are a bit old but very clean. Very good service and conveniently located. Walking distance to metro station. Option of Japanese and western breakfast. Definitely go for the Japanese, traditional and very tasty.
- Anna (10/5): - Small mid-century style hotel. Excellent staff and amenities. Rooms are small but clean and comfortable. Great location for local restaurants.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): - 1.
- id (10/5): Nice and quiet hotel in the center of the Town - Nice hotel close to all touristic places. A kindly staff and a good breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- 697danael (8/5): Good location, good service - This hotel is 15 minute-walk from Tokyo Station and 20 minute-walk to Akihabara.
Nice and cozy, great service and good breakfast with western or oriental options. It has kept it's original decoration which gives it a good atmosphere.
- philip (10/5): boutique - I always say there and am always remembered by the staff and looked after
- Anna (8/5): Eccentric and Charming - This hotel is 1950s throw back in style. Rooms are small but comfortable. We loved the eccentricities but it may not be for everyone. If you appreciate mid century furnishings and are not in need of business conveniences, this is a lovely place with fabulous staff. It's a good break from generic corporate style hotels. Location is away from main hotel areas.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Julaberry (10/5): Friendly, old-world hotel with impeccable service - We stayed at Hilltop Hotel for one night only prior to flying out of Tokyo. If you google Hilltop you can read a little of its history but despite its age, everything was well-maintained and the exceptional service was of a level rarely seen in hotels nowadays.
The staff were extremely accommodating, allowing us to check in earlier so we could enjoy one of our last days in Tokyo and delivering our luggage to our room in our absence. They also stored it for the day after we checked out which meant we could enjoy the day out without worrying about bag storage!
Upon arrival we were shown to our room by a really lovely man (unfortunately we didn't catch his name but his service was exemplary) and asked if we would like to enjoy some traditional Japanese tea in our room. The tea was delivered shortly after with some Hilltop cakes which I think you can also purchase as a souvenir.
Our room was tastefully decorated in an older style but everything was clean and the room had been modernised.
Location wise, the hotel is situated close to the university, "Booktown" and an area filled with music shops. We also noted many shops specialising in snow and ski wear. Although the area is fairly quiet it is quite centrally located and we found many cheap restaurants for eating and drinking about 10-15 minutes walk away near Kanda station (the area is called “guard-shita and is under and around the station). After dinner I had a long bath in our room and relaxed in our Hilltop yukatas. I wish I had asked if we could buy one of these as they were really comfy!
We chose the bed and breakfast option which meant we got the choice of a western or Japanese style breakfast in the morning served in a beautiful dining room.
My only regrets of our stay were that we didn't get to try to Bar Non Non (which only seats 9 guests) as I was unwell with a head cold and that we only had one night.
The bed was a little hard but the most comfortable of our trip to Japan.
Overall, a really pleasing stay - thanks to the staff of Hilltop.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- fiwirose (8/5): Nice hotel for a 2 night stay - We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights at the beginning of our trip. The location was fairly decent, not too far walk from the nearest train station (Ochanomizu) although as the name suggests it is at the top of a very steep hill so taking heavy cases was a challenge! The staff here were very helpful and lovely (as most of the people are in Japan). We stayed in a Japanese style room with tatami mats but a bed rather than futons. The room looked like a film set, really beautiful with an old writing desk. I did find the room to have an odd smell to it (there was an ashtray provided on the table) so I think it may have been stale smoke. I did get used to it eventually. As soon as we arrived we were served green tea and biscuits to the room which was a nice touch. The bathroom was dated and while not unclean it was a little aged. We didn't find there was much in the way of restaurants or nightlife around the hotel, so generally always took the train somewhere else. Nice stay for the 2 nights we were there, was lovely to stay in such an old building. Not sure I would stay again but that's down to the location and not the hotel itself.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wow, Wonderful Quality & Impeccable Service Hotel - Excellent Service, Beautiful & Perfect Room. Breakfast was Superb in Quality, Service & Attention to Detail.
- Exnewyorker9 (10/5): Helpful, Friendly, Comfortable - On our first evening in Tokyo at the Hilltop Hotel, we asked the desk clerk for a sushi restaurant recommendation. He gave us one, and then realized we would have trouble finding it. (It was downstairs in a mall.) So he guided us to it on foot (about 10 minutes), told the sushi chef about our preferences and desired cost, and went back to the hotel. We were astounded. Plus, it was a very good meal. Hilltop Hotel is an older building, but has been modernized. The room was comfortable, the lobby was comfortable and welcoming, and I had a very fine traditional Japanese breakfast in the hotel restaurant. It's not as imposing as it looks in the official photograph (I had expected it to loom over the neighborhood - it doesn't), but it's next to a large university and the neighborhood is lively. We (a couple in our 70s traveling for pleasure) highly recommend it.
- Fransje_12 (10/5): A great step back - This hotel was truly old fashioned! The service was absolutely wonderful as it used to be in the "olden days" when service was what hotels were all about. We were very impressed by the total attention to our wishes and needs, even though we had language difficulties.I would definitely stay there again, having mastered the subway so we could go all over Tokyo, the station was quite close and easy to get to.We did find that the bed and pillows were very hard, but that was normal for Japan,we were told. The room was quite big, with easy chairs, and tea making facilities so we could sit and read if we didn't want to go out. Many restaurants and a lounge with newspapers, one in English.Thoroughly recommended.
- Susanlam2015 (10/5): charming and great service - This hotel is next to One of the Meiji University campues and very centrally
located. Short walk from a few different train options. It is old but well maintained and has a definite old world charm.
Our room was large by Japanese standards and the bathroom in particular was the largest of any we have had during a number of visits to Tokyo. we were on the fifth floor and it was quiet with a lovely view of an enormous ginko tree in a small park next door.
The staff are extremely attentive. The western breakfast was generous and tasty and the service during the meal immaculate. The breakfast room is full of beautiful objects - a very peaceful and satisfying start to the day.
This is not a cheap hotel but if you don't mind spending a little more and want a great location a little more space and old world charm it is a great choice.
the hotel also contains a number of lovely restaurants. We ate in the Tempura restaurant - wonderful experience but very pricy.
- jonathandQ1247VP (10/5): I love this place - Cool and classy not too expensive for Tokyo..in a vibrant neighbourhood near the park
but hotel is very quiet.. excellent but expensive tempura restaurant..i suggest going for the
Japanese style rooms...nice wood furniture ...great service
- Verified traveler (8/5): A classic - The Hilltop is the antidote to hotel life in the modern metropolis. Set back from the street, it is quiet and charming in the old style. Art deco/art nouveau furnishing touches, gorgeous little restaurants (imagine breakfast surrounded by stained glass and classical music). Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. It is a gem!
- StellaHobo (10/5): Wonderful tradition hidden on hill - I have stayed here 3 times over last 7 years. It is a get away to a small hotel famous among a generation of writers. In the old book area of Tokyo can walk the alleys for great traditional cafes from the 1940 s where coffee and a cigarette is still part of the ambience to new start ups. A special place while not a boutique hotel has one of the best tempura restaurants in Tokyo.
- Aethelred (6/5): Lobby and tempura review - I did not stay in the Hilltop Hotel, but I had a lunch in the famed tempura restaurant and some talks and coffee in the lobby.
The hotel is surrounded by Meiji University and it makes sense to stay there if that is your focal point. The annex has been sold to the university and I think it is closed already. The main house conveys, as everyone has said, a frayed, genteel-poverty, say *** Brighton hotel impression, which does have its charm, especially in Tokyo. But there is no seclusion or being-away feeling or anything like that left; the hotel is fully encircled by highrises and modernism as such by now.
I found the tempura restaurant (we had a full business lunch at the counter) underwhelming. Surely it wasn't bad, but by service, atmosphere and taste, it was also not worth mentioning. The cherry blossom desert wasn't very good. The highlight for me was the clam miso.
Altogether, both hotel and tempura restaurant seem okay to me if one is invited or booked there, but for neither would I make any special effort.
- Kxyz (8/5): Charming, albeit frayed at the edges - The eyes of Tokyoites light up when you mention the Hilltop Hotel. "Oh that's a good choice! Many famous Japanese writers stayed there in the past." And indeed, the hotel is like something from the past with old pieces of furniture and a charm which is hard to find in the hotels of Tokyo. In addition, the service is very good indeed. From another viewpoint, the Hilltop is in need of updating with worn carpets and a bedroom window which was like something out of a caravan. We stayed in a standard room in the annex. I liked it - it was light and clean and had character. However, it may well not appeal to individuals who prefer something newer and more modern.
We had dinner in the tempura restaurant, which is famous amongst Japanese for its high quality. The food was excellent, but at 10,000 yen per person + drinks, for a fairly quick meal at the counter, i thought it was expensive. The bar is excellent...the barman certainly knows how to make a good martini!
- Bill_and_Yoko (10/5): Charming with Wonderful Service - Only stayed one night but thoroughly enjoyed it. The room was spacious, clean and had all the old fashioned amenities. Very comforfortable. wonderful bar in the main building, western breakfasr reastaurant in the annex. A good experience.
- pk104 (10/5): Amazing peace and quiet in central Tokyo - The main building was originally a girls finishing school but then was taken over by the US occupation forces and later became a hotel. It retains many of the prewar architectural features of the prewar building and is a place with character and charm. There are some trees around and, being set on a hill back from surrounding roads, is surprisingly quiet and peaceful. Strongly recommended.
- 334Giacomo (10/5): Charming hotel, great experience - This hotel is charming, it an old (by Tokyo standards) structure, with "old-fashioned" service and amenities. It is quite different from the mainstream luxury chain hotels, providing a relaxing diversion from the frenetic rhythm of Tokyo life. It is located very conveniently, close to major subway and train stations, and surrounded by shops and restaurants, many of which are conveniently priced to cater to the students of the nearby Meiji University. But the hotel itself is tucked in a side street, and is very quiet. Service is impeccable, though the staff is not all well versed in English (better to speak slowly with no slang).
- bureaudechange (10/5): So cosy and not messed with - It was so nice to find a hotel which has kept its original historical charm and which hadn't been overly modernised. As someone who is always disappointed by unnecessary and usually soulless updating of older hotels this hotel is a gem. We had a Japanese style room which was great and our welcome to the city was wonderful. The staff were extremely courteous and we adored the deco (the table lamps alone throughout the property were worthy of an Elle Decoration article). We only had breakfasts here but both western and Japanese were good. Its very convenient from Tokyo station as its minutes away from a JR station.
- DriftwoodB (6/5): Nice Hotel - I really liked this hotel. It was ideally located and the staff were super. I would have liked to rate it higher, but it needs some face lifting. The restaurants are very nice. A great steak place on the premises. I cannot say enough about the staff, everyone went out of their way to make sure we had a good experience. They were really good in explaining to us how to get around, as we had no knowledge at all of Japanese. Great coffee.!!!!
- Wendy Wei (10/5): Service is great! - Like it a lot!!
- Bob (10/5): Art Deco Hotel - Great if you want what you get - I would recommend staying here if you are interested in Art Deco, Tokyo's 20th century past, or just an interesting experience. I stayed here because it has a beautiful Art Deco exterior, and was (is?) a hangout for the literati of Tokyo. The hotel interior gives the impression of being a bit tired. But that is because it is all from the 1950s (?). My room was comfortable; but a bit dowdy. The area around the hotel has many trees. It was a novel experience to wake up in Tokyo to the sound of birdsong! At night I was lulled to sleep by someone playing jazz in the Meiji University dorms adjacent to the hotel. Don't stay in the annex; nothing to recommend it. I'm not sure that I would stay here if you are just coming for tourism and want a modern affordable hotel.
If you are coming to Tokyo on the Narita Express, get off at Tokyo station, and change to the Chuo JR line. Go to Ochanomizu (Water for Tea...nice name!). Go out of the station at the Meiji University side. The hotel is 10 minutes walk. It's a hilly area (hence name of hotel). It's an easier walk if you go past the Kandasurugadai post office, and take a left. Have a look at the map inside the station before you exit.
This is a great area. There are many used book stores, some of which specialize in European languages. Also many musical instrument stores. Since it is a university area, there are many cheap restaurants; Japanese,Indian, Thai, Chinese, and hamburgers. There are also many bars and coffee houses.
