Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (4/5): My stay experience - The room was good in size but some guys were smoking weed and i couldnt sleep well. The guy in the reception is so nice and welcoming.
- Onne (10/5): - Very nice located hotel, friendly staff and clean room.
- M (10/5): - From the time that I arrived to the time that I left, they really treated me as best they could, also managed to find a room on the first floor due to my health condition. Alway was extremely professional and friendly.
A modest place but clean and well located. Comfortable bed, breakfast was fresh every day. I can definitely recommend it including family.
Thanks a lot for the warm welcome. Def I'll be back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Super sweet, it’s if you would visit your Dutch grandma. The breakfast is so lovely, staff ist super friendly. The location is perfect. Super fair price. I’d definitely book again.
- paulo roberto (10/5): Viagem Perfeita!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This place is awesome, was there for 4 nights with my teenage girls. The breakfast, location and family run. It truly was a treat, 3rd time visiting Amsterdam and glad we found this place. Also huge plus is the 397 airport bus stops at the front door.
- Patricia (10/5): Great Place to stay - Location, Location, Location.......right near the bus line and all of the museums. Direct bus right to other parts of the city as well as the airport, as well as stores and restaurants. Staff is very friendly, accomodating and helpful. The breakfast room is adorable and every afternoon and evening there are cookies, chocolates and cake available any time as well as tea and coffee. The breakfast is the same every morning, but it was very good. All 18 rooms were full the week we were there and yet it was very quiet, except the sound of the street cars and buses and even though each floor has a shared bathroom and shower I never had to wait to use them. Great place to stay, but make sure you can climb stairs. Oh, there was always a bowl of oranges and apples on the stairs for the guest. What a nice gesture.
- Verified traveler (8/5): É bom - Atendimento, cuidados e localização excelentes. Frutas e cha a tarde! Porem escadaria ingreme e banheiros minusculos fazem o estabelecimento perder pontos
- michel (8/5): Amsterdam Funk Hotel - Place is basic.
Bed and sink. Shower and toilet in the hall.
But somehow that was OK.
Not sure how to describe it.
People who ran the hotel were great and the location is perfect.
Steepest set of stairs I have ever seen. Not recommended for anyone with any mobility issues.
3 blocks from Vondelpark (running, biking, etc.) and a couple of blocks from the Rijks and Van Gogh Museums.

- Elizabeth (10/5): - How does this a one star property?!
Yes, it’s semi dorm style with a sink in the room and the bathroom and showers down the hall, BUT EXCELLENCE!!! The staff was great, provided a lovely breakfast, and easy check in/check out process.
LOCATION WAS FANTASTIC. Right next to the Musemplein AND tram station for effortless traveling.
I will be returning:)
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The stairs, were a challenge for me. The breakfast was delightful and staff wonderful. I couldn’t have got my bag to my room without their help.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Simple not quiet - Quaint hotel with simple comfort. Lovely breakfast. Neighborhood is a little noisy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Honestly for the price and location I was expecting a rundown place probably not so clean. The location is unbeatable. I didn’t experience any noise. The place is a hidden gem, absolutely gorgeous. The steep and narrow steps? Historical! The free breakfast on such a charming room? And my single room after 4 days of backpacking at age 57 with only little time to spare to get to the museum and train station ? Unsurpassable! This is a rare finding at this price and location. Spoke to other customers about higher rooms and they were all very pleased
Recomendo
- Christopher (10/5): - Staff is very helpful and friendly, small rooms and bathrooms but very clean. Delicious breakfast.
Great location. Will say again.
- Daniel (8/5): Stairs too stiff - Stairs too stiff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Small family run property just behind Rijksmuseum. First thing that greets you is a staircase that is very STEEP and covers 3 floors. No elevator!! Not for older people and hard slog with bags. The rooms are clean and good but older. No TV in room. Breakfast same every day but good. Free tea and coffee after breakfast in breakfast room. Close to museums and transporttation - bus and tram stop just outside.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - LOCATION is super convienent, interesting historical building with ridiculous staicase... use caution!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good stay if you are on a budget - The hotel is in a great location! It’s very basic and the stairs are extremely steep, but the price was worth it. Sharing a bathroom was okay, probably my least favorite part. Free breakfast was simple and nice.
- Silvia (4/5): - Las escaleras tremendas. Desayuno correcto .
- Thomas (10/5): Nice nostalgic hotel - We liked the location of the hotel, it is near a lot of museums as well as nearby the center of amsterdam. There is a tram and bus stop right infront of the hotel, of course that causes some noise but that was acceptable. The hotel is nostalgic what makes it nice looking but lowers the comfort (e.g. no elevator), however, there is free wifi :).
We enjoyed very much the breakfast :)
- Verified traveler (10/5): A view to a stay - A lovely and well maintained property away from the city center. The staff is polite, helpful, and diligent. The ample and tasty breakfast perfectly compliments the jaw dropping views from the dining room. The twin bed single room was superbly clean and well suited for the solo traveler. The room had a sink with plenty of mirrors, lighting, a closet, desk, and extra seating. I did not use the WiFI and the heat worked perfectly in freezing temperatures. The shared WC and shower were spotless and standard size for Amsterdam. Overall, it was a great experience!
- Ludovica (10/5): - Cozy quiet nice place perfect to unwind in Amsterdam. Looks like a boutique hotel. Fancy surroundings. Their tasty freshly made breakfast impeccably served in the living room overlooking Rijksmuseum is the best way to start the day off! Would definitely enjoy to stay again next time
- Paul (8/5): - It's a lovely hotel in the heart of the museum district and handy to the centre of the city. The accommodation is comfortable and the service excellent. It's not for anyone with mobility issues as there are steep staircases.
- Simen (8/5): - Sentralt og sjarmerende.
Hyggelig personale.
- Gustavo (8/5): Localização, localização, localização. - Pequeno hotel, bom café da manhã, escadas íngrimes e banheiro/chuveiros compartilhados.
Perfeito para caminhar na cidade, localização impecável.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel is an old hotel. In practice, this means the room was small. I expected this. The stairs up to reception are incredibly steep and wouldn't suit people with mobility issues or heavy luggage. There was no TV in the room. WIFI was "pedestrian".
The big plus is the location at the centre of the museum district. That was what I wanted. Transport links were great with both trams and buses near the front door.
No hotels in Amsterdam are cheap. It's an expensive city.
Overall it was fine.
- Denis (8/5): - If you would like to stay in a characterful and quirky hotel within yards of the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum, then this is it.
'Yme'-super nice guy is the Manager and runs the place-was more than kind and helpful.
This without even being asked.
It is a steep climb up the stairs, which is not a problem...unless your are older and not so fit.
- Nikki (8/5): - Nice hotel very close to Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. Great breakfast and charming decor. The hotel staff are very friendly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Super situation, petit dej continental très sympa.
Chambre petite mais plutôt calme.
Bon qualité prix
- Verified traveler (6/5): Too small - Tiny room. No toilet. No shower.
4 steep flights of stairs.
- Bo (6/5): Expensive hotel - Location and breakfast exilent, but the hotel is rather out of date. Beds were like hammocks, there were no ventilation and no AC, wc and shower very small and in corridors. Staying in 4 th floor as we did you have to walk very steep steps all the way up. Not for old people or unfit. If you are lucky to get a room with view you probably have to stand a lot of noise from busses, trams and drunk persons screaming all the night.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value in central location - Small hotel in a central location. Tram station just outside the door. The rooms were neither brand new or very big, but they did what we needed. Comfortable beds and nice fresh air from the roof window. Really friendly staff, who cooked us a nice breakfast. In general good value in a central location in Amsterdam.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Hotel is very conveniently located in front of the tram station and there is also a direct bus to Schipol airport. The stairs were daunting as everyone else mentioned. Would appreciate if staff could offer help (which they did only when we departing).
Breakfast provided every morning was great and rooms and shared bathrooms were kept clean. Would appreciate if they provided new towels everyday and not place our items (like neck pillows or jackets) on the floor as the carpets are very dusty and dirty.
- SHANG-YI (10/5): - 整體表現良好,距離景點近;
沒有電梯,得提行李爬上/下頗陡的2層樓樓梯,頗辛苦;
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great location, quaint. - The staff was fantastic. They were very helpful and also very friendly.
- Valerie (10/5): Great little spot - Loved the feel of the place. Very steep staircase. Shared bathroom and shower room but very clean.
- Anja (10/5): Great hotel, close to centre and next to museums - I stayed in a single room for 6 nights. The room was small, but had everything I needed (washbasin, chair+desk, little shelf, comfortable bed). It was clean when I got there plus the room got cleaned every day. A towel and soap were also provided.
The toilet and the shower were on the same floor as my room and I shared them with the other guests on that floor. The facilities were always clean and I never had to wait long to get in.
Every morning a very good breakfast (egg, ham, cheese, different kinds of jam, nutella, different kinds of bread, fresh orange juice, coffee/tee) was served, I often didn't get hungry again until the afternoon, great! The room where the breakfast was served was very beautiful and had a great view on the Rijksmuseum, which is literally next to the hotel.
The staff is friendly and helpful, they gave me a city map for free and I could ask them if I needed any information or help. Plus there were further informations about museums, tours, restaurants, etc provided next to the reception.
If you're looking for a cosy and clean hotel, not luxury, but rather simple (and therefore quite charming), this is the right choice.
I had an awesome week in Amsterdam and I really enjoyed my stay in the hotel!
Practical informations: Tram lines number 2 and 5 go directly from central station to the stop Rijksmuseum, which is right in front of the hotel. The stairs in the hotel are quite steep, so if you have major leg or foot problems, this could be difficult
- Verified traveler (8/5): - If you think about this hotel more as a guest house than a typical hotel, you'll have the right idea. It's kind of (and I mean this in the most positive way) like a youth hostel for those that have grown out of youth hostels. The place is impeccably clean, and run with a very family atmosphere. The breakfast is generous, and the vibe is very friendly. That said, you are meant to be more self-sufficient than at most hostels. I would absolutely stay here again.
There are quite a lot of steep stairs (typical Amsterdam) and no lift, which is worth bearing in mind (though the staff will help if needed).
- Verified traveler (8/5): Location - Gets terribly hot in the summer. Otherwise, you get what you paid for.
- Peter (8/5): Well located - Enjoyable 2 weeks. Stairs can be a problem. Noise from adjoining trams
- Radovan (10/5): Super rodinny hotel, skvela dostupnost - Rodinny hotel v super lokalite.
- Verified traveler (10/5): I was at a conference at VU. - Friendly staff - very agreeable accomodation!
Breakfast was exceptional.
- ashling (10/5): happy out - my first time there had a brilliant time will re book agaain
- Carlina (8/5): A quaint getaway - We enjoyed our stay. Very convenient to travel around the city as local transportation was right outside the door. Beautiful views. Our only issue was the steep steps with no lift. But after a few days it was a non issue. Also, the shared shower and bathroom were always clean and not crowded which I was worried about.
- Tim (10/5): Perfect if you're done w/hostels but aren't a wimp - I dug this place. Too clean and quiet to be a hostel, but a nice compromise, and Dutch personality. Yes the room was tiny, but you're in Europe. And yes there were 79 steps from the street to the room, but you pay for a gym membership for that back home (and no one made you bring that much stuff). And yes the shower was tiny but if you complain that much, travel might not be for you.
The guys who run the place were very nice, the breakfast was above average, and the location was incredible, right there on Museumplain and the tram/bus line for easy access to/from the airport and city.
I would/will stay there again.
- Susan (6/5): Convenient location. - Very convenient location. Because the hotel was used to be an old Dutch house, the bathrooms and restrooms are very small. Breakfast was very good and staff are helpful. The man in the front desk helped me with my suitcase. Will stay here again.
- Lena Kista (8/5): Great stay with great service - My mother and I had a great stay. The service was in top. Everyone working at this hotel are really kind and helpful and that means a lot. The hotel is charming and is right next to Rijksmuseum.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Hotel...
Consigliato!!!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Location, location, location - Can't beat the location. Room was simple but comfortable. So convenient to museums and tram 5 that can take you either to the central or south train stations
- Kevin (10/5): Awesome Hotel 5* - Amazing location of hotel, in a really nice district, lots of local shops and things to do, so quite and peaceful
- Not Provided (10/5): Lovely (if you're prepared for stairs!) - I was there for 3 nights/4 days, and had an exceptional time.
The provided breakfast is nice but not great for those with any dietary requirements (1 of our group was vegetarian and the other was vegan, and the breakfast consists of toast, a boiled egg, cheese, and ham).
The room was clean and though the bathrooms and showers are shared they're clean and there are never queues.
The hotel is directly across the road from the famous "I Amsterdam" sign and a five minutes walk from a lovely Irish bar, the club Paradiso, a sports bar, several food places, and two museums (particularly the Van Gogh Museum which is just across the park from you and absolutely lovely!).
You can get the 5 or 2 teams from Centraal Station to Museumzicht which run really frequently.
My only criticism of the hostel is that there is an extremely steep staircase leading up to the front door, and then from the front door to reception, and they are not only steep but also extremely high. If you're okay with walking up loads of stairs (including with your suitcase!) you'll be fine.
You can also store your bags in reception for free and they don't mind.
No curfew and they have coffee facilities to make yourself some until 6pm which is nice!
It's really lovely, honestly check it out!
- Aleksandras (2/5): Go and find better one than this. - For the price i've paid, this hotel should be much better. Double room without double bed, tv and any table, small and smelly. Breakfast - well that's just toasts with jam and tea. Not worth to pay this money. Not recommend for any one.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location, right next to major museums and many trams and buses right outside (bus 197 goes directly to the airport terminal). Very friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (6/5): mixed feelings about this hotel - The breakfast is good however the area is very noisy and if your a light sleeper then sleep will not be easy here. The beds are quite small and all singles. The area is close to a lot of the museums and is easy to access by the bus get the 197 bus it cost 5 euros one way.
- Badway (8/5): Budget hotel with great location - Very basic hotel near the museums. Clean rooms and facilities with a decent breakfast. Friendly staff to check in and serve breakfast. Bus stop to Central station and also to airport across the street.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not recommended - Had to climb 70+ steep and narrow stairs to get to the room, which was an attic. Hit my head twice on the beam. Only one small window on the ceiling. Only handbasin in the room.
Hotel had the smallest toilet and shower I've seen. Anyone bit obese will have difficulty turning around in the toilet.
Breakfast was ok but like a ration.
WiFi was strong in the breakfast room which closes at 10pm so useless. Most boring stay.
Not worth the money paid.
- Michael (8/5): 3 night stay - This Hoyle was in a amazing location. Great beds, clean clean rooms and friendly staff, the hotel was booked up full but we didn't hear anyone else there, unlike some other hostels where all you can hear is drunk people screaming. Great great great A++
- Anna (8/5): Awesome people at a quaint hotel - The stairs to this place are intimidating, but the service was spectacular. The breakfast was delicious with a fresh boiled egg, cheese, meat and bread with juice and coffee. The location is great for visiting the museums. Despite the small rooms and shared bathrooms, I would definitely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - There is no elevator and when you are super tired from your flight, it is very hard to walk up their very narrow and very steep and very LONG staircase. Maybe the hotel personnel should carry your bags up when you first get there. Also, you really hear all the traffic noise. Great breakfast and dining room and great view of The Reichtmuseaum out the window!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I am elderly and most of my friends would have a hard time navigating the entrance to the hotel - up two very steep and narrow flights of stairs. The room was of good size but spartan and probably not in keeping with the style of hotel to which my friends are accustomed.
- Seok chin (6/5): Simple and neat hotel. - Breakfast was good.
However, note that not all rooms are with attached bathroom.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great position, beyond stylish. - Comfy bed, hot shower, no televisions in the rooms (heaven!), wonderful view from the breakfast room over the Rijksmuseum, helpful staff (they even lent me a laptop when mine gave up).
If you want style and relaxing comfort, not the driven fripperies of the modern hotel, come here.
- Mike (10/5): Character hotel well positioned. - Friendly staff. Handled ill-behaved obnoxious guests well. Good breakfast and all-day tea and coffee were welcome.
- kev (10/5): Great area
Clean, friendly and happy staff - Really nice hotel
Perfect location
Lovely breakfast
- Michael (8/5): Great for a night or two - Nice hotel that had a hostel vibe. Ideal location and the rooms were clean but not amazing. Checking in and out was easy and free wifi was a plus.
Would stay again but only for a night or two.
- Dejan (6/5): For 65 Euro a room....exelant - Small, cozy, jazz at breakfast, No WIFI on second flour. Overall I'll do it again.
- Erik Ling (10/5): Museumzicht Hotel Taste of Holland - Staff was wonderfully helpful and patient for tourists. Location was great. Not a typical hotel! Get to stay in an old Dutch home. Close to the Tram to central station and all the best museums. Nice staff will bring you some cheese, tea, and an egg in the hotel living room. Staff gives u great info. Shared bath and restroom is fine for the open-minded traveler. Rooms are simple with some great views. Enjoy, i was content. Thanks to the staff for the umbrella when I needed it!
- Andrew (4/5): great location, crazy manager - Fantastic location and room was small but OK. Great breakfast but not served until 8:30. Manager told us we could have coffee or tea anytime in the dining room but yelled at us when we did so at 6:00AM
- Verified traveler (10/5): Comfortable hotel perfect for museums. - A very comfortable hotel with kind and helpful staff almost next door to the Rijkmuseum and Museumplein. It was clean and I really liked the paintings in my room.
The staff helped us find good places to eat, how to get around and to book for a visit in another town. The stairs up to the hotel level were steep but that goes with the territory in Amsterdam.
I'd definitely recommend it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): great neighborhood - Welcoming staff.
- James (8/5): Steep stairs! - Steep stairs and small rooms. However, hotel felt homely and staff were friendly.
The breakfast was decent enough, especially given that this was a cheaper hotel.
The hotel is in a good location -- rent a bike and you'll be minutes from all the sights.
Overall, provided you don't have a hip replacement this place is fine for a night or two of budget accommodation.
- Stefanie (10/5): Excellent little hotel - Clean and well-equipped rooms and bathroom facilities. Excellent breakfast service, friendly and helpful staff and SUPERB location!
I would definitely recommended this hotel as excellent value for money, however it is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues or an excessive amount of luggage. The stairs are INCREDIBLY steep. I'd read this in reviews and still didn't believe what I was seeing upon arrival.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Great location - Awful beds! - Great location, very friendly and understanding staff, but the beds we so uncomfortable we had to leave. For the degree of comforts in the room and the quality and quantity of the breakfast it felt quite overpriced.
- Colin (8/5): Great hotel for museum district - This hotel is in a fantastic position for The Rijksmuseum and The Van Gogh museum. It is right next to the tram stop on the 2 and 5 lines and the bus from the airport (197 I think ) runs right past the door.
So it all about location, location etc.
The hotel is on the third, forth and fifth floors of a typical Amsterdam building from the late 19th century, so no lift and steep stairs. Décor is dutch style with tiles and clay pipes etc. and is dated.
Its functional, if you like Holiday Inn please go there. If you like something a little bit unusual you will enjoy your stay.
Tea and coffee available all day in the breakfast room at no charge.
- Olga (8/5): VERY BASIC ACOMODATION IN A PERFECT LOCATION - The hotel is very basic and poorly maintained. It is marginally clean. People are very nice and polite. You can not beat location: across the street from two major museums, 10 minutes by tram from everything you want to see and next to a bus stop directly to the airport.
- Verified traveler (8/5): muzeumzicht amsterdam - This is a good budget hotel, the staff were friendly and provided coffee and cake when we missed breakfast. Bathrooms good. Only warning is its not for people who don't want o climb steep stairs.
- Calvin (4/5): Cheap but not so cheerful - Good location and staff were polite but the 'city tax' was a fair bit more than expected. There are far nicer hotels nearby for only a small amount more
- Eli (8/5): Perfect Location!!! Modest Price, no frills. - If you are looking for a no frills hotel in the heart of Amsterdam this is your place. You can NOT find a better location. The price is modest for the heart of Amsterdam. However it is no frills. Beware of the stairs.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Rooms are small and stairs are steep, yes, but rooms are clean, tidy and well-maintained. Fantastic location right next to museums and on tram line direct to central station. Very good stay for a very reasonable price for the city.
