Guest Reviews
- Daire (8/5): - Lovely staff, handy location and great value for money. A little noisy, but that can't be helped given the location.
- Amy (7/5): -
- Diane (10/5): - Lovely staff, place was very central to where we wanted to be.
- Pauline Anderson OBE (10/5): - Great pub nice staff Room a bit small but it was all I needed
- Francisco (8/5): - Clean and well equiped. I could here the music from the pub in my room when I went to sleep. I know that people go out on saturday night but please ask them to lower the music after 11.

- Naomi (10/5): A great stay and very welcoming staff - Great location and friendly staff

- Priscilla (10/5): The staff was extremely helpful. The service was excellent. - Clean and neat
- samantha (10/5): Lovely staff. Lovely room. Lovely food. Great check in. Near the overground railway - Everything. Amazing little find in the heart of Hackney. Maybe squeaky floors above us but that wasn’t much at all
- Neil (8/5): We had a great night at the Empire next door and our stay at the Old Ship enhanced the evening! - The pub is lovely and well run with friendly hardworking staff. The room was spacious and exactly what we needed. Everything met our expectations and was as advertised. We would definitely stay there again. There was a slight cooking smell in our bathroom which was above the kitchen.
- Michelle (9/5): - People and atmosphere Too hot on the top floor
- Ross (10/5): Perfect place for a night away if you’re seeing a show at the Empire - The location for the Hackney Empire was amazing. A literal stones throw from the stage door.
Food and drink in the restaurant was very good and discounted for hotel guests too.
Comfy bed too!
- CARA (5/5): - The staff. The quirky decor. The pub. The distance from the overland train. The distance from the venue. No coffee machine. Climbing up 2 flights of stairs with a heavy suitcase. The lock malfunctioing locking me in my room with no means of exit8
- gary (10/5): -
- Lucy (8/5): A cozy place for a cold weather stay, with great staff - As others have said the staff of the Old Ship are great. While the single rooms are small mine was cozy and comfortable. It was cold outside, so with the window closed at night the room was completely quiet (might be more challenging in warm weather). Carpets and bathroom were very clean and looked recently refurbished. Nothing!
- janet (10/5): Excellent staff and great food. - The staff were friendly.lovely room very quiet and clean with everything we needed. They were kind enough to open the bar early so the family could meet for a drink before my sons wedding. We had a meal excellent burger and great recommendation for our breakfast just across the road. Nothing.
- charles (10/5): -
- Richard (5/5): Some positives - Clean rooms Very small
- Michael (9/5): Perfekt in Hackney!!
- John (8/5): Quiet room yet in the heart of Hackney close to key venues. - Location Creaky floor, tights stairs, no decaffeinated tea or coffee. No breakfast on site. Mind you, excellent breakfast across the road.
- Terence (9/5): - All good
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Jonas (10/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): Really lovely and perfect location - Really lovely, staff friendly, room lovely and discounts on food and drink purchased from the bar. The location is perfect for the Hackney Empire and The Moth club. Bus stops near by going straight to St Pancras, couldn't ask for more really
- Kerri (10/5): Great food and lovely stay - Great location great place and lovely food
- claire (10/5): Excellent value for money - Lovely great location
- isabelle (8/5): -
- Jacqueline (8/5): -
- Josephine Dylan (1/5): This is rooms above a very noisy pub. Not a hotel. - Staff Everything

- Meri-Tuuli (10/5): Great location and cozy, clean and stylishly furnished small room with a London vibe. - We really liked our room - it was furnished nicely, the beds were very comfortable and it had the London vibe we love and came to experience. The room was also very quiet, which was a delightful surprise as the pub downstairs is popular. The staff was very helpful and professional.
- Tatiana (9/5): it's definitely worth the money I paid - It was all fine, as ecxpected for the price. When I opened the window and the room is tiny so you need some air, there was a lot of noise coming from the pub at the ground floor.
- Nick (10/5): -
- Tim (8/5): Excellent - Very comfortable Nothing
- Geraldine (10/5): -
- Wil (9/5): - The Old Ship Inn is situated in really central location, with easy access to all local amenities. It's very easy to get around London from here, by tube or uber. The atmosphere and staff are all really lovely, and can't do enough to help. The mulled cider for Christmas was a really nice touch. Only that we wish we had stayed a bit longer to see more.
- Gary (9/5): -
- Joe (10/5): A great place for a short stay - The room was clean and snug, the location was great with just a 2 minute walk to the nearest overground station. The staff were very friendly and helpful
- Martin Balm (8/5): - Location. What for service.
- Caroline (8/5): Very quirky hidden gem - Location, comfortable, clean & lovely pub below the accommodation Nothing
- DIMITRA (8/5): -
- Maarten (10/5): -
- Andrea (8/5): -
- John (8/5): - Great location for our needs Room was very comfortable but a bit hot
- Nikolaus Vollmer (9/5): - Lage top, alles sehr urig Steckdose im Bad hat leider nicht funktioniert.
- Daniel (7/5): - Staff were great, location was great, room was comfortably furnished and the whole establishment had a cosy, fun atmosphere. Would stay again. Bathroom towel rail was extremely hot and couldn't be turned off. Had to sleep with the window wide open. This was the only issue.
- Stewart (10/5): -
- Kristin (10/5): Great value, quiet and way above expectations! - This was a great value and an awesome location! Very quiet. Nothing. It was honestly really good
- Wendy (9/5): Great little place, with great staff and good location for Empire. Good food and drinks available. Would use again but a - Great location for the train and the Hackney Empire, in a quiet back street with a great pub, food looked delicious and hotel guests get discount on food and drinks.
Comfy bed and tea and coffee facilities with plenty of bottled water.
Heating was on but we opened the windows which made it more comfortable. Very narrow, winding staircases to all the 10 rooms. Room was comfortable, double bed and sofa bed in room.
Bathroom door wouldn’t shut, so wouldn’t lock, but we were only there one night and we are family, so not huge problem.
Shower was over bath, but it was in a tight corner so you had to climb into the bath to access it, no hand rails or slip mat, so getting out, for me, was difficult. No shower curtain so the shelf and floor got soaked.
- Trevor (8/5): -
- Sarah (10/5): - Friendly staff
- Bionic Ann (9/5): Small but perfectly formed - Staff welcome, friendly, accommodating.
Small but perfectly formed single bedroom.
Full length mirror. Bedside reading lamp.
Sparklingly clean en-suite shower room, wardrobe, hairdrier and plentiful hot drinks coffer. Water carafe and bottled water. TV and comfy chair.
Blackout blinds. Free internet.
Bar and food pub available. Guest discounts. Stairs only to 2nd floor.
- Jacquie (10/5): Good value for money in a great pub - Our stay at The Old Ship Inn was great. Bedroom small but comfortable, nicely decorated, spotlessly clean and equipped with everything we could need. The staff were lovely and we enjoyed dinner in the pub before walking the two minutes to the venue we were going to. We were delighted - this is a real find and we’ll certainly stay again next time we’re in this part of town. Nothing, it was very good.
- Stefanie (8/5): -
- david (9/5): -
- Anne-Marie (10/5): Perfect cosy stay - Perfect room size.
Clean and cosy and just upstairs from an excellent pub and good food. Nothing
- Catherine (10/5): Excellent hotel - great location! - Friendly staff, clean and very convenient for Hackney empire!
- Giannaki (10/5): -
- Steve D (7/5): Great location,Nice room and shower.Shame the private function went on far too late. - Room was ready early.Clean and presentable room.Comfy bed.TV.Nice shower.Tea,cofeee, water available.Great Location. Private party in the function room with loud music and external strobe lights that continued until 12:20 a.m. The private function prevented the use of the restaurant and bar facilities, which would otherwise have been utilized. The radiator didn't work. The window only opens an inch. It would be beneficial to inform potential hotel guests of any pre-booked private functions on the night(s) of the proposed stay and/or offer a reduced booking fee to compensate for reduced facilities and not being able to sleep until well after midnight. Attempting to generate income from functions with late-night loud music AND the hotel on the same evening seems quite mercenary to the detriment of the hotel guests customer satisfaction levels.
- Alan (9/5): Excellent staff, nice and clean, lovely restaurant. - Went for a wedding reception and the food and staff were excellent. The food was great very good, and the staff hard working and attentive. Only the shower. It was either to hot or to cold. Very hard to adjust if I had to moan.
- Shane (8/5): -
- Sylvia (8/5): -
- Christopher (8/5): Great place for a short stay in Hackney - Right in the middle of Hackney Central. Good pub below for food and drink.
- Mathias (6/5): Nice pub and nice room, comfy and clean, but a little pricey. Food ok for Vegetarians, but pricey. - The room was nice, but a little small. I liked the tea and coffee facilities. Also, nice bathroom and towels. Lock on door was a little sticky. Staff v pleasant and helpful. Food was fine, I m vegetarian and there were a few options, just a little pricey for my taste. Door lock sticky. Food ok for vegetarians, a little pricey. Also, the room was a little pricey for what was on offer, I was disappointed that there was no breakfast on offer. Sadly, no capuccino, only coffee. Staff a little too busy with bar duties to fully attend to guests.
- Wallace (9/5): - Had character and the staff were lovely, comfortable room too with two fans! There were a few areas in the room that had been scuffed or damaged. A few dings and dents here and there. Maybe needs a small refresh
- Sian (10/5): A lovely little secret in Hackney - It had great charm very insulated which was remarkable. Staff were fantastic The stairs but to be fair they did warn me about them and offered to help take bags up
- Clark (10/5): I love staying here when I'm down for work!!!! - Boutique rooms above an inn. High quality facilities including powerful fan. Staff are friendly and helpful and took my bag to my room. Trouble free in the ideal location. Nothing
- Aidan (10/5): - Really lovely room and pub, comfy bed and nice bathroom. The 20% off food is a really good bonus too. It didn't personally bother me but the pub below is open until 1am so it might not be for everyone
- Max (9/5): -
- Craig (8/5): Brill. Will use again if required - Location to the empire was ace. Music a tad loud but it is above a pub so to be expected.
- William (8/5): No complaints great stay - Staff were great , location was really convenient , great to get 20% off food and drink in the bar Breakfast in house would be convenient
- Richard (8/5): -
- Marie (7/5): -
- Glita (9/5): Brilliant! Will definitely come back. The staff was amazing as well! Thank you! - I loved the location. Literally 2 minutes walk from Hackney Central, probably not even that. Close to breakfast places, gym just around the corner and the pub on top of which the hotel is located has amazing beers and even better food. The only thing that I could say wasn’t ideal it’s the fact that the pub is open until 1am which is completely fine with me, but people with sleeping problems might have a tough time.
- Takuo (7/5): -
- Kathy (10/5): Great room, friendly pub - We paid a bit extra for the room & I was glad we did - it was lovely, bed was comfy & everything was clean. Food in the pub was good & we liked the ambiance, staff were very friendly too.
- Debbie (10/5): Very pleasant - Very nice staff. Lots water in bedroom. Easy to get in and out. Comfortable . Good for tubes
- Isabel (6/5): Pleasant - Despite being a small single room, there was plenty of space for a suitcase, hanging clothes, comfortable bed, easy chair, TV, tea facilities and good bathroom the biggest problem was lack of air-conditioning. I was unfortunate to stay during a London heatwave - I was perhaps unusual in staying a week (most people I believe stay 1 or 2 nights). There was a fairly good fan but this was totally inadequate for the continued heat over the whole week. Heatwaves in London will occur every year & it is essential you put in air-conditioning - my room faced west and the evening sun was intense. You also risk your 'boutique' status degrading to 'budget/shabby' unless you keep on top of more detailed cleaning (eg grubby doors, carpet & skirting boards)
- Keith (7/5): Good -
- Jodie (8/5): Great 1 night stay. Everything you need and nice staff - Very near Hackney Town Hall as we went for a wedding. Staff allowed us to check in early and it was nice having pre drinks in the pub. Fan in the room was needed and very much appreciated. No Breakfast which I think should have been included in room at that price or at least a few welcome drinks
- Rebecca (10/5): Exceptional -
- Frances (9/5): Superb -
- Melina (8/5): Great find in a quiet side street - Good location, central to Hackney. Very friendly staff. Location in a quiet side street and you do not hear the pub at all. The room was very nice, very clean, and had everything needed.
- Jesuisrouge (10/5): We will definitely come back again - Fantastic hotel, real hidden gem. Loved everything, no complaints!
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional - Comfortable & clean We were there sun to mon so quiet , maybe it could be noisy at weekends??
- Margaret (7/5): Charming inn with pub downstairs. Rayon was a fantastic host. - Convenience of pub to hotel. Rayon was absolutely the best host. Location - difficulty of Ubers and rides to find the hotel. No elevators.
- Alan (5/5): Served its purpose as somewhere to sleep but nothing else. - Close to the station. The room was very small. The booking initially was for myself and my daughter but she was unable to come but if she had there was very little room for 2 people.
- Wendy (8/5): Very good -
- Jon (7/5): Clean and comfortable, friendly staff. Easy access to Hackney Central station. Good price too. - 24 hour access. Good facilities with everything you could need in the room - even an honesty box for device charging cables! Not the fault of the pub - my stay coincided with a very hot spell of weather, so the lack of air conditioning meant that the room was quite warm.
- Jordan (7/5): Not bad, good hotel/pub but needs aircon or larger fans for the rooms - Location was ok, nice pub & rooms were clean. No aircon in the rooms and the fan was very small made it a very uncomfortable stay and had to leave early on the morning with it being far to hot in the room.
- Cates (9/5): Superb -
- Gonçalo (7/5): Good - The beds were comfy, good location. The room had plenty power sockets. Staff were nice and polite. Not very soundproof and a lot of noise from the streets or just people walking on the hallway. got a very hot day and there was a lack of adequate cooling systems, just a fan that did not cool properly. The bathroom has a bad pungent smell anytime the tap is turned on or the toilet. Overall ok experience.
- David (7/5): Good -
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ian (4/5): Disappointing - Nice pub. No air conditioning. Mattress didn’t fit onto the base of the bed so not only uncomfortable could not sleep on the edges so a small double was even smaller.
