Guest Reviews
- Cristiano (8/5): - Personale molto cordiale e ospitevole, struttura molto pulita e facile da raggiungere, ottima posizione.
- Rosa (10/5): Uma estadia aconchegante! - Fomos recebidos muito gentilmente e o hotel nos ofereceu todas as condições de uma estadia agradável. As sugestões de restaurantes foram ótimas e nos sentimos em casa.
- Barbaros (10/5): Cosy & Boutique - Great hotel, very near to the train station, rooms are very clean and the owners of the hotel are very kind
- Garia (10/5): - Very friendly hosts. The location of the hotel is perfect.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Convenient value option for railway station - Failed to acknowledge my email advising them of my eta...so I had to call in the end and was met with annoyance from the lady.
When I arrived, they then confused me for someone else...quite noisy in the street outside
- Chris (4/5): - My wife and I booked a four night stay in July. We booked a room with access to the terrace. The terrace was definitely the highlight of this hotel. This was a beautiful area to spend time in. Unfortunately the air conditioner in our room did not work, and it was over 90° this day. My wife and I could not sleep the entire evening because it was so hot in our room. Knowing that there are limited rooms in the hotel, and some do not have air conditioning, we were forced to book elsewhere for the remaining three nights. Hotel staff seemed accommodating at the time, and even offered that we would not have to pay for the one evening we did stay. Unfortunately two days later, I realized that this hotel charged me for all four nights. Management was accommodating, and refunded a portion of the money through PayPal. This whole situation seemed very fishy though. I did still get charge for that one night. Overall, it seems like a cute place in the right time of year, but be careful if coming during hot weather. Also, rooms are small, especially the bathroom. I am over 6 feet tall, so this was an issue for me.
- Alex (8/5): - Really nicely decorated with lovely furnishings, and the outside terrace was nice too. Very clean and the owners were very friendly. Noisy street but earplugs were provided and it didn’t really bother me. Location was also great-really close to the train station.
- Lisa (8/5): First time in Florence - Overall the stay was great. The couple who owns the place are very nice and approachable. The rooms were clean and there was a nice, large open terrace that people could go onto. The room my friend I stayed in opened directly onto the terrace, but unfortunately it was raining when we were there so we couldn't really go out on it. The area is also pretty good. It's the near the train station and the center of the city.
- Sheila (8/5): Good location and great host - Fantastic host, charming hotel with 10 rooms or so, rooftop terrace a bonus. Would have been better had I selected a different room, mine was the single room on the first floor under the stairs and with a window on the street. Rooms upstairs had windows to the terrace which might have been quieter. Earplugs were provided, which usually is a sign that there will be noise. However, the location near Santa Maria Novella train station cannot be beat, and everything was clean and comfortable, and the host was so nice.
- j&j (10/5): An oasis in Florence - Fabulous family run boutique hotel. Beautiful elegant room. We had one that opened onto the terrace. What an oasis! Enjoyed my morning coffee there and a great place to relax after a day of sight seeing. Perfect location. Walkable to everywhere! Close to the train station so convenient for day trips. Great restaurants a few doors away. Staff were very helpful. Just loved our 7 day stay and would recommend to anyone visiting florence!
- Salmaan (10/5): Great hotel, wonderful host. - Amazing host. Lovely hotel. My new favorite hotel in Italy. The hotel itself is located a few minutes from the center (two streets down), it's a pretty hotel that reflects the love that was put in to it. There is a sitting area with a garden above for the guests, it's so peaceful while being away from the noise of the city. What makes this place so great are the hosts, Carmen is a wonderful host and a great person. I arrived early and was checked in instantly. I spent the evening on the patio talking to carmen and other guests. The weather was great, the company was pleasant. It was a memorable night. I would always recommend this place to any guest considering florence, don't hesitate just book.
My only advice would be to check the room you get has a private bathroom, there's a couple of rooms with shared bathroom and a couple with private. While I had no issue with the shared bathroom, it was always empty and private but it might be an issue for some. Depending on the time, you might get one or the other.
- Priya (8/5): Cute and friendly place - A nice place for a short stay. Nice decor. Would have been nicer to have had AC in the room. As a lone traveller, I had my concerns about safety before arriving but I felt totally safe there. Unfortunately, the wi-fi happened to not be working for the majority of my stay.
- Louise (10/5): The host made my stay memorable! - This place is a gorgeous Italian gem .
I came here on my own my friends went back earlier . I had 3 day here the first day I meet Carmel the host she was lovely lady from Boston very warm and funny. I felt very at home . My room was a single room which a suited me fine . my bed was comfy and shower in room . Pino and Carmel invited me have dinner with griefs last night which I will have great memories of Florence . I will definitely be back thanks Carmel & Pino your Irish lady from Canada lol.
- Joe (8/5): Nice quiet hotel - Nice little hotel off a side street a few blocks north of the SMN train station, close to the Mercato Centrale. Owned by a couple; the wife is American. Rooms are quite spacious, although the bathroom is quite small,no tub, just a shower. The room also had a mini fridge. King bed was actually two twins slapped together, but that was fine.
The hotel has a nice patio on the 2nd floor. Immediately after dropping our bags we walked over to the market and bought some bread, wine, cheese, salami, and olive oil, and had ourselves a lovely picnic lunch on the terrace. They offer wine glasses in the rooms and bottle openers on the patio.
Hot water in bathroom is anemic at best, and variable. For your shower you'll wait a long time for it to warm up, and during your shower you'll be adjusting it constantly.
Eco-conscious, they ask you to set aside glass and plastic for recycling, hang your towels for reuse, and have liquid hand soap so you don't waste bars of hand soap.
They have wifi but it's also a little anemic and a bit flakey.
A/C available, but €10 extra per night, cash. Free earplugs, but it's a pretty quiet area so you may not need them.
Needs another small trash bin in the room, not just the bathroom.
No elevator, so if you have heavy bags, consider this.
Don’t forget the sneaky city tourist tax must be paid in cash.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great location. - Staff was friendly. Hotel was in a great location not far from the sites we wanted to see and not far from the train station.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great "home" base - What a great place to stay! Carmel and Pino were so helpful with all the questions, requests, etc that I had. It was close to walk to everything I wanted to see in Florence - and to the train station for everything outside the city - and yet felt like a neighborhood - safe and friendly. As a single traveler it was nice to be able to meet and talk to others on the hotel's terrace at the end of the day and compare experiences; being able to pick up bread, wine, cheese, etc at the grocery store and keep them in the fridge there allowed the opportunity to feel like it was my "home away from home". I would highly recommend staying here...
- Jonathan (10/5): - Florence was beautiful, il bargelino is well placed for the train station and a short walk from the centre
- Ashley (8/5): Cute, home-like hotel - My husband and I liked this hotel, but some things about our experience could have been better. We were on our honeymoon and we got the room right in the lobby and against the street. Noisy, and little privacy. So we weren't always totally comfortable. But the bed was comfortable, and we had everything we needed.
- Randy (10/5): Truly A Gem - Great walkable location - 5 mins. from the train station, 10 min. to Duomo, 15 mins. to Ponte Vecchio. Right in the heart of everything, but on a fairly quiet street a little removed from the constant hustle and bustle of ever more crowded Firenze.
The owners and operators are two of the nicest people you will ever meet in the hotel business -- friendly, helpful, and with just the right amount of professionalism mixed in. They went waaaaaay out of the way to help me out in a difficult situation while I was in Firenze, and I'll never forget it.
The hotel is completely charming, and Oh! The Terrace is a lovely oasis in the middle of the city. It's sunny and bright up there with lemon and orange trees, a fabulous 20 year old cat, and a long table to have your breakfast/lunch/snack on under an awning. Couldn't be nice.
I write very few STRONG recommendations, but I have no qualms in giving Il Bargellino a total two thumbs up Hip Hip Hooray.
- Sheila (8/5): Good place for the money - Owners Carmel and her husband were very accommodating, helped us up and down the stairs with our luggage, and even chilled some bubbly for us in their refrigerator. (A refrigerator is provided in the room, but there's a note that lets you know it's to keep already chilled items cold and thus will not chill things down for you). The room was spacious but the bathroom was tiny, as is common with these older buildings. Also common in this area (but unusual for us) is that the toilet is in the same space as the shower, which takes some getting used to.
There was some dust in the closet area near the baseboards, but Carmel was quick to take care of it when we brought it to her attention. There were some questionable marks on the wall near the headboard, but the sheets seemed clean. They provided an extra towel and pillow upon request, and those seemed clean as well. The bed was a little hard for me, but it wasn't terrible (I'm just accustomed to my Tempur-pedic).
The place is conveniently located with the train station nearby (but not too close), several great restaurants on the same street, and the city center only 10-15 minutes away. There is also a lovely terrace that all guests are welcome to use, but you'll need to book directly with them if you want to request a room that opens onto the terrace.
Overall, a decent place to stay for the money. If you need more amenities or luxury, expect to pay quite a bit more somewhere else.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Wonderful staff Beautiful rooms - Close to the Academia and the train station. The hotel was beautifully appointed but the best part was the staff who was so helpful in terms of finding the best restaurant, shops and places of interest.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Overall Good Experience - My daughter and I stayed for 2 nights. The owner was very hospitable, as his wife was traveling in the US. He made sure we had everything we needed. The hotel is older in a classic Italian style with high ceilings and marble floors and steps. I enjoyed the upper terrace for relaxing and having wine one evening. The hotel itself was very quiet , but a lot of street noise coming in during the night through our bedroom window. Enjoyed the fact that I could make coffee in the room each morning. We felt very safe there..
- Arthur & Kathle (8/5): Return to Florence and the Il Bargellino - We love Pino but were sorry to miss Carmelo who was back in the states. We were close to the market, restaurants, train, and bus. It's a good place to establish a base of operations. We stayed here 7 years ago and ended up in the same room. We shared a toilet and shower, but that was not a problem...specially at the price per night! They now have espresso machines in the rooms and light pastries for breakfast snack.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Quaint Hotel in Downtown Florence - I stayed for 3 days at Il Bargellino, and I would recommend it to anyone. The location is a short walk from key Florence sites. The owners are very friendly and make wonderful recommendations of how to spend time in the city.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Central accomodation - Old but charming, it provides the basics for a short stay in the centre of the city.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice Bed & Breakfast in Florence, Centrally Locate - Great hosts - you feel like you're visiting family when you come to stay at Il Bargellino. Centrally located close to all the city sights in Florence and near many great eateries, as well as the markets.
Although there is no breakfast, there is coffee and snacks in the room, as well as a refrigerator for you to buy items to enjoy on the rooftop terrace.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good - Very good .............................................:.::::::...................
- Rhiannon (10/5): Fantastic Hotel for a City Break in Florence - The hotel was fantastic, located within easy walking distance (10-15 mins) of most major sights in Florence. I chose this hotel for my first solo trip and first time in Florence and was not disappointed. I stayed in a single room and from previous reviews I was aware it was shared bathrooms so it was a huge bonus when i found that my room had a private shower. The room was much more spacious than I was expecting and the owners were really friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The decor is really nice and gives a unique feel to this lovely hotel. I will definitely choose here next time I'm in Florence! Thankyou for a fantastic stay!
- Sophie, (6/5): Basic comfort - Don't be fooled by the one star rating- it serves perfectly fine for a basic, low cost and safe place to stay in Florence. Close to Santa Maria Novella station which was very convenient with suitcases and bags. Top floor terrace is lovely for afternoon, evening or night drinks and relaxing after wandering around Florence all day. Close to markets, and not far at all from the Duomo and the central sites.
Top tip: head down Via Nazionale and find Tutto 99¢- everything is that price including bottles of Peroni and other beers. Save on buying so many out and get them here to enjoy on the aforementioned rooftop!
- emma (10/5): Great location, cute hotel - Everything worked really well.
I was in the single room which had a sink and shower, plus fan - which was definitely required.
Very friendly couple who run the hotel, gave me some great ideas re where to go in and out of Florence. Lovely terrace if you want to eat in or have a break from museums, etc.
Would stay again.
- Luís (10/5): Amazing Firenze - Really nice hotel, great location and very helpful staff
- Verified traveler (10/5): A charmer! - Affordable charm and hospitality, Il Bargellino was the perfect combination for me. As a solo traveler, my room was small, but just what was needed and the shared bathroom never felt shared. I slept well every night with the aid of earplugs (those Vespas make a lot of noise sometimes) and the provided fan- even during the heatwave. I'll stay there again of given the chance to return.
- Daniel (10/5): Great location near the train station. - We had a wonderful stay here. Very friendly and helpful staff. The patio was comfortable and inviting and the room was just what we were looking for.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok - Pros
Amazing patio
Great hosts
Great location
Good value
Cons
No sound proofing you can hear everything that is going on in the house and on the street
Constant beeping of door bell from people going in and out during the day
I was very excited to stay at this place due to the amazing reviews but this place is not a 5 star accommodation at all. 2-3 at the most. You are basically sharing a house with the owners and other guests. We stayed in one of the cheaper rooms that was on the noisy street side and had to share a bathroom/shower. I wouldn't stay here again unless I was placed on the quieter side of the building. The fridge in the room didn't work, and you couldn't use the blow dryer as the fuse kept blowing. The highlight is definitely the amazing patio where you can hang out and relax.
- Bronwen (8/5): Friendly home away from home - It was so refreshing to use the Terrace, after a hectic day travelling it was great to relax on. The room was spacious and comfortable. Using the shared toilet down the hallway wasnt a problem.
Carmel was so friendly and helpful. I would definately stay again, and recommend to friends.
- Geoffrey (8/5): Very good value for money and convenient location - I stayed here for a couple of nights before going on to do some work in Florence. Friendly owners and very clean room.Great big radiators bashing out plenty of heat this being winter.
Ideal location for walking to the 'great sights'and not far from the train station.
I would definitely stay here again.
No TV in the room but pardon me-you are in Florence- so what are you doing wanting to watch TV. There is a great terrace but being winter I was mostly out and about.
Overall very good value for money.
- San Diego home (10/5): Good location close to train station. - Very personal and friendly owner originally from the US. Therefore there is no English language problem. Close to train station and quiet neighborhood. Great price for Florence hotel. Easy walk to see Michael Angelo David. Not in the main tourist area but all very manageable. Would gladly stay there again.
- Rachael (8/5): Welcoming with a lovely terrace to relax on - Carmel was lovely and welcoming. It feels like staying at a friends house. It is only a short walk from the main areas and is close enough to the station to make it easy to walk with bags but far enough away so as not to be like the station.
There is a large terrace with chairs and lounges which was lovely to relax in the afternoon when you've walked enough. Grab a bottle of wine and some deli items and take some time to rest your tired feet in the warm sun.
I think some rooms don't have internal bathrooms but ours did. Compact but clean.
There is a few nice little restaurants just down the road and Carmel is great with suggestions of things to do and where to go.
Highly recommended. Good value for money.
- Booboo (10/5): Great stay - We had a brilliant stay at the hotel. Pino was a great host and Carmel was really helpful. It was a home from home. The terrace was a great way to meet other guests. The location was ideal for Santa Maria Novella train station where you can get many trains to the rest of Italy and only a short walk to many attractions. Invest in a room that overlooks the terrace for the best outlook and make sure you visit the indoor market. :D
- Derrick (10/5): A quiet no fuss hotel. - A stay at the Bargellino is a pleasure. This small family run hotel is a comfortable walking distance from all the major historical sights in Florence as well as being near to the railway station. It is in a quiet street with little or no traffic. In fact the noisiest thing during the day is probably the pet parrot. There is a large terrace available to guests on which they can enjoy an aperitif though this would have to be their own drink as there is no bar. The owners have, however, conveniently provided cork screws.
The hotel does not provide food but there is a good selection of restaurants and bars close by and they are on the edge of the tourist area so prices are low and quality high.
We would certainly try to stay at the Bargellino should the opportunity arise.
- James (8/5): Nice Hotel, Close to Everything - This hotel was a perfect introduction to Italy. The owner (Pino) was great with advice to get around and always pleasant. The rooftop terrace is a fantastic way to start or end your day. No crazy luxuries but just a very welcoming place that you are happy to call home while in Florence.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful Friendly Place - I chose this hotel because of mentions of its terrace in several reviews -- and it is a marvelous plus. It's a small hotel (10 rooms) run by a very friendly couple (wife raised in Boston so English is good) -- guests gathered on the terrace in the evening and visited and shared wine and snacks, got to know each other, etc. No breakfast is served but there is a supermarket about 2 or 3 blocks away where we bought pastries, fruit, and juice which we ate on the terrace. We also bought food for dinner (pizza or ham and rolls) and ate our dinners there too -- most others went out to dinner but we were too hot and tired after walking all over Florence all day.
All rooms are off the second floor so lack of elevator is not a problem. Bathroom was small but there were shelves to put things on and plenty of hot water (items lacking in our much more expensive room in Venice). About 3 blocks from train station (also, airport bus). Free Wi-fi. Fairly spacious room with large closet -- shelf in closet large enough for both of our large suitcases to open on. Small refrigerator. Hair dryer.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Thanks - Great v friendly owners and extremely personal service which was just what I needed when traveling alone. Perfect for my few nights in Florence. Would stay here again next time. Good location with plenty around, very near central market so could go and get fresh fruit everyday.
- Jen (4/5): Disappointed and Mislead - 1st id like to start by saying this was my 1st trip to Europe, so take all comments as you will. My husband and i were traveling though Italy on our honeymoon and i would have to say this was by far the worst hotel we stayed at. I think the over all dingy and old hotel over powered whether or no this place was actually clean or no so i wont really talk about the... my husband was semi pleased with the cleanliness so i'll leave it at that. Upon booking our hotel we read that there was AC and bought and paid for a room with a private bath and terrace entrance. Upon arrival we were given the option of a terrace room or a private bath... We opted for the private bath which lead us to our second MAJOR disappointment... No AC in our room. Apparently there is AC in the upper rooms that you have to purchase the usage of at an additional price. Mind you it was 100+ degrees the entire time we were in italy. We never would have stayed in a hotel with no AC willingly on our honeymoon.
I could keep making a list but i guess over all we were disappointed in the fact that we were mislead in what this hotel had to offer. The one plus side to this hotel was the terrace, It was very nice to layout after a long afternoon of sight seeing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great place, friendly people! - Very friendly staff, made me feel at home. Rooftop terrace was lovely and a great way to meet other travelers. Clean and well-maintained. Easy walking distance to train station and other public transport. Very good value.
- Andrea (10/5): Convenient - I was literally out of the room from 8 to 11 so the room was just fine. The owners were friendly and funny and there was a nice outdoor terrace for guests. The best point of this place is that it's close enough to the station but on a street with less traffic.
- Gayle (10/5): Great hotel, great location, great price - Great location, minutes from the main train station and a short walk to the city centre. The hotel manager Pino was exceptionally helpful. The hotel also has a roof top terrace with beautiful flowers - a place to relax after a hard day's walking around the city.
The only less positive thing to say is that the noise from the road at the front of the hotel can be disruptive, but all in all, a great place to stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): II Bargellino - Such a wonderful, quaint place to stay in Florence. Would definitly come back to this hotel. Carmel was wonderful to have made reservations at some of the galleries for us. Wish we had been able to stay longer. A small breakfast would have been nice, since we had trouble finding a place to eat at an early hour.
- Claudia (10/5): Charming hotel centrally located. - My husband surprised me with this trip and the hotel. Our stay in this hotel added to our perfect trip. The proprietors were very attentive and helpful. I honestly didn't feel like I was staying in a hotel. Instead we were visiting some good friends in a beautiful city. In the morning we would have coffee on the terrace planning our day, in the evening we would enjoy the cool night air. This hotel is close to all the major sites and the central train station. Their is good restaurants a stones' throw away. The bed was comfy and the room spacious. Free wifi and loved the interior decor. Simply lovely hotel. We are already planning our second trip there to finish our tour of Florence. We stayed for three days and nights. Staying anywhere else is out of the question. My highest recommendation.
- Justin (10/5): Il Bargellino - Great place with very friendly staff.
