Guest Reviews
- Vicky (8/5): - Property was in between 2 train stations. It is in a quiet neighborhood and away from the busy areas. It was quite a bit of a trek in hot and humid weather. In nice weather, the walk probably wouldn’t have bothered me as much.
The facilities are a bit dated but clean. Staff is very nice.
- Alexander (10/5): - Thank you, visited from the UK, had one night here to rest my head and it was perfect for that - quiet and clean with AC in the room which you need in the summer. Staff very welcoming and let me leave my suitcase there much earlier than check-in and let me leave it there for a good while after check out.
- ?? (10/5): - Soooo good
- paulo (10/5): - Staff are very friendly!!!
Hotel very close to shopping area and JR line and star liner train to Narita airport.
- Wai Kwong (10/5): -
- CHUNFAI (8/5): - N/A
- Tsz Foon (8/5): - Room is Location little bit far away from Ueno station
- Timothy (8/5): - Very pleasant, helpful, multilingual staff; comfortable room. No elevator, but the stairs aren't too bad. Easy access to Ueno Station. Overall a good, reliable hotel.
- Cody (8/5): - Comfortable with good air conditioning. I wish shaving materials were included though. Showers are small but good.
- Ken (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (4/5): -
- A6687DZchrisn (10/5): Entire hotel has been remodeled! - I've stayed at the hotel many times through the years.
A month ago the complete remodeling project was completed. I am so impressed with the results!
The rooms and public areas are all new and bright and fresh. The bathrooms have been totally replaced.
My room even looks larger than before.
No lift (elevator) is the only shortcoming.
The entire staff is still wonderful, too.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The location is close by Ueno and service is great, but can hear people walking and chattering along the corridors even when your doors are closed.
- Bowen (4/5): - Apparently they were doing renovations & my room absolutely wreaked of a sickly smell. Upon enquiring about this smell, they explained that it was because of the new wallpaper that had just been applied.
The room itself was clean & comfortable, but the smell was terrible, sickening.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The best thing about this place is the staff people are very friendly and nice and helpful.
There is no elevator.
Room is small for a single room.
They have been renovating rooms and they will be renewal soon.
- laiking (8/5): 性價比高 - 優點:交通方便、價格優惠、房間面積相對較大;
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- ken356911 (2/5): Old and Smokey dilapidated - Booked the room as non smoking and on checkin no smoking signs were everywhere. But the room stunk of smoke. It must have been a smoking hotel for many years until recently. We had 3 nights booked and paid for but left after the first night. NOT EVEN A PARTIAL REFUND. No lift, Which is not stated. Disorganised checkin. Way overpriced for the standard of facilities. Better, cheaper places nearby.
- ADEPER23 (10/5): Excellent location, staff and value for price - Small hotel with excellent and very helpful - kind staff all the day. Perfect location, near to Ueno station (subway and JR) with Seven Eleven in the area for small food or other super market needs. Very good WiFi signal in the first (Second in Japan) floor, very good and clean the single room with large single bed.
- sxrxhxshim (4/5): Great location. The rooms? - Location: very convenient for seeing around town
Finding the hotel: wasn’t too hard to find. We arrived at night n it was fairly easy to find.
Reception service: 3/5
Room condition: not smelly, moldy, black spots on the wall, dusty at the ceiling area
Bed: too soft and it’s double bed is not suitable for 2 persons as mentioned online. I did not have a good rest.
Aircond: works very well
Toilet: Tokyo n Osaka toilets are small. So the size was fine with me. It is clean too. No smell
House keeping: day 1 they did housekeeping
Day 2, no housekeeping . Fresh towels are provided daily.
Staff: friendly staff
I understand it’s a low budget hotel but maybe in terms of cleanliness can be improved?
I am not interested to stay in this hotel again.
But if u don’t mind the above, then it’ll be alright.
- peeteeteepee (2/5): Old smelly mouldy hotel - Usually Japanese hotels are very clean and well maintained even if they are old. But not this hotel. There's black mould on the wall paper in the room and in the bathroom. The bedspread is stained with what looks like semen, blood and coffee. Don't be deceived by the photos.
- TravelNut12309 (8/5): So convenient, with such helpful and friendly front desk folks - My friend and I, both women on the far side of 60, arrived on foot with all our bags for a month-long trip. Taking the Keisei Skyliner from Narita to the Ueno station couldn’t be easier, and Google maps helped us find the hotel. Granted, you have to keep your eyes out, but the photos at each intersection made a big difference in getting there. This is a quaint little place, but the friendly staff made an enormous difference. The older gentleman carried all our bags, without question, up the two flights to our room. The room is not particularly big, but it worked well for us. To get an idea of the bathroom size, think of the bathrooms in cabins on a cruise ship. Beware of the small step from the floor level in the bathroom and the room proper. There were enough outlets to charge all our devices, enough room for our small suitcases and backpacks, an alcove with a desk area where we could lay out paperwork and such. Just a short walk away is Ueno JR Station (climb up stairs next to the street for the footbridge leading to the station. There are lots of great things in the station - bookstore, toilets, huge panda decoration for spring, Anderson bakery, Starbucks, murals, and a whole bunch of nice restaurants (try Grill 1930for good food at a good price). I would stay at the New Tohoku any time, happily.
- Katsumi (8/5): - The hotel is very well located, the room was comfortable and the staff was nice!
- kahelp (10/5): Locay, location, location! and value for money - This is not your posh hotel, but it's awesome for those on a budget and who wants easy way going to the airport.
Upon reservation, my sister requested to be on the first floor because there's no lift in it. Room size was adequate for two people and three medium luggages so packing up wasn't a problem. The room has a double size bed and a small fridge. The bathroom was clean, and the hotel provided towels, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, body wash, and room slippers. Overall, it's a functional and clean room. It's a dated building and has no views so if you are looking for views, look for posh hotels in Umeda.
The hotel is 400-500m away from Ueno Station and 600m from Skyliner Ueno Station. We chose this hotel because Skyliner goes to Narita airport, and it was an ease to be near it when you have lots of luggages and hand carry. You don't need to transfer stations.
It's one express to Narita airport.
Moreover, there is a nearby Lawson and 7/11 stores for immediate needs. Ueno Station has Hibiya, Ginza, and JR lines so less transfer when you go to key destinations such as Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Akihabara, and Asakusa.
The hotel is also near Ameyoko (food and goods) market and near Yamashiroya (toy shop). Menya musashi is also near Yamashiroya (must try tsukemen).
Your friend in Japan will be Google maps. It will tell and give you options on what train and what platform to board, and GPS shows you if you are on the right path when walking. However, sometimes JR lines may be confusing because of the clockwise and counterclockwise direction. Just refresh your maps on your current location so it will be updated to real-time. If unsure, hey, just ask the Japanese people, they are well-mannered, and they will surely help you.
- Shana (8/5): - The facilities are pretty dated but it is pretty clean and with great access to Tokyo metro and JR. Staff are also friendly and helpful.
- travellerpensioner (2/5): Not a good hotel to stay - The word " new" is very misleading as this hotel is consider very old and smelly carpet. Not advisable to stay even it is near Ueno station. For low budget traveller may be suitable. The location at the back of high building make it not easy to find it.
- SupunA (8/5): Walking distance to Ueno Park and station. - I stayed with my husband for one day at this hotel. Rooms are small. They do not have a lift so if you are travelling with luggage consider that too.
Room (and the attached bathroom) is very small. They had a bath tub in the bathroom. Even though it is small they had all the necessary things in the room. Had a window, but view is the next door building. But if you had luggage, it would be difficult to manage as the space will not be enough.
May be because of the color of the bed covers we didnt feel it is very clean. Saw some stains in the underneath the bed cover.
Felt this hotel is bit old. We selected this hotel because they had attached bathroom. Most of the places at this price would be having shared bathrooms.
This is very close to Ueno park. Also the JR Ueno station is close by. But you will have to use Google Map as it is bit difficult to find the place. We even walked to Asakusa from the hotel in the evening.
They provide free coffee in the morning but we didnt get a chance.
In overall it is value for money. We wanted to book the hotel for others days when we returned back from a trip outside Tokyo. But could not get any room, may be because we went in the peak season (March end).
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Went to visit my family andfound the staff unfriendly and room not quite clean
- lindley2016 (8/5): Close to Uneno Station, greta location. - we stayed here for the first time and had two rooms as we were travelling with 2 children 8 and 13. im not sure if they have family rooms but our rooms were next to each other and that was great. Not sure they have a elevator and so ask for a ground floor room if stairs are a problem. They were very helpful and the rooms very clean and neat. although the rooms are smallthe beds are super comfy and the room has everything you need. You are in Tokyo so who has time for sleeping! The hotel is really close to Ueno station so you can explore central Tokyo on the one train line which runs in a circle, which means you can visit Harajuku and other places all without changing trains. Really good if you dont have a lot of time. You are close to restaurants and some good coffee shops for breakfast so make the most of the location. Definately will stay there again, great place and would recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Tricky to find best way from Ueno station. - We got lost leaving Ueno station's many exits late at night and figuring out which of the many overpasses to use - used several of each.....didn't get to the hotel until about midnight but were thankfully being waited for by a very patient hotel staff man - thank you so much! Our only problem was not figuring out that the air con/heater could be adjusted by us (we thought it was fixed.....at 5 degrees! - very funny when you think about it, and probably reflected the huge travel day, flight delays, and getting lost in nigh time Tokyo full of the first snow for 10 yrs....).
- Juha (6/5): Siisti pieni hotelli Uenossa - Ihan ok hotelli hintaan nähden. Kun tarvitsee asiallisen pienen mutta siistin huoneen aluella jossa hotellit maksavat yleensä huomattavasti enemmän Touhoku on hyvä vaihtoehto. Hyvä sijainti lähellä Ueno ja Keisei Stationia. Olen ollut aiemmin ja käytän varmasti jatkossakin. Hyvä hinta/laatusuhde.
- Verified traveler (4/5): -
JR & Subway
- Joe (10/5): - Always a pleasure to stay here!
- Joe (10/5): - Always great to stay here.. very friendly staff and in the right location for me!!
- Pepusina (8/5): Best quality-price - Near Ueno JR station, 5min walking. We got the small room for two and i was very concerned that it would be very small but it was ok, 120cm aprox. We could also borrow some umbrellas, the staff speaks english... good!
- Picky2traveler (6/5): Friendly owner and staff - We stayed our final night before flying out of Narita and picked this hotel for its location and price. I was a little nervous about the hotel condition, but going in with low expectations helped. Our kids were on the second floor in a large room with twin beds and newish carpeting. It was reasonably nice compared to the room my husband and I were in on the first floor, that was tiny and dingy. Nevertheless, the shower and AC worked fine and the bed was comfortable. The location is indeed very good for access to the Ueno stations and leaving luggage there during the day is secure and easy. The hotel is on a quiet street in an active neighborhood with lots of restaurants nearby. And the staff are pleasant and the owner is chatty and kind. We had no regrets about staying here and saving money over higher priced hotels.
- Ka Yue Alan (8/5):
- Claes (2/5): Foul odor all night :( - The room stank of a foul odor all night. We had s hard time to sleep even with the fan on an window slightly open. Perhaps it is leaking from the bathroom under the carpet in the bedroom or perhaps someone puked on the floor. It was room 207.
Very small room, no wifi and old bathroom.
- lizaflor55 (2/5): My Booking May 22-27, 2017 - This is not a review but a comment, i decided to cancelled my booking at Hotel New Tohoko dated May 22-27, 2017. I change my mind when i read that they have no lift going up on the 3rd floor and that it is not easy to find hotel. We are Retired Filipino Senior Couple travelling and need lifting going up.In just few hours of cancellation they reflected their charges in my credit card despite of many emails..apologies ..appeals they seem to regret my request..can anybody help me convince this Hotel New Tohoko to refund the charges ..to be more considerate to aged travelers who at time make mistakes in booking.Help..
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Chak Hin (8/5): Location, Price, Convinience - Close to all major attractions of Ueno, also gateway to the airport
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- 656richardo (6/5): Good for the Single Traveler Who Is Not Too Fussy - If you're just passing through town after arriving at the airport, this hotel is a good economical destination. Have a look at the user photographs to see what the rooms look like. The location is convenient because the express train from Narita stops at the Ueno Station and you can walk to the hotel from there.
Want to read more about the hotel and the area around Ueno? May I recommend "The Narrow Roads; In Search of Old Japan," available on Amazon.
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Joe (10/5): - Always great there!!
- Thetengster (8/5): Perfect location friendly staff - The hotel is strategically located within minutes from GInza Line and other line. It is about 8 minutes walk from the main Ueno Station. One can easily walk to Ameyoko Night Market. Location is just perfect.
Room size is small but cosy. Cleanliness is good. Sleep quality is good too. There is a small TV in the room with lot of local channels.
Staff (especially the lady) is very friendly and willing to help at any time. She make us feel very homey as she talked to us a like parent. Don't bother ask questions to the young man as he is pretty unhelpful. We didn't try the breakfast there but the coffee was a good start of our days.
All in all, we had a great stay there. We will be back.
- bonnefourchette3 (4/5): Needs update; not worth the price at the moment - Hotel easy to find using directions on website; but with luggage it is easier to exit Ueno Station through the Iriya gate and head for the giant silver gold ball statue towards the right, where there are escalators - hotel directions lead you up and down stairs. Hotel small and very tired; a decor update is definitely needed. Staff very friendly, no fault in service. No lift, but staff carried luggage to second floor (checked in early before room was ready), and helped carry downstairs. Single room a decent size for Japan, but again decor very old. Bathroom had several cracks in sink and ceiling, and several hairs left around sink. Toilet continued to make noise several minutes after using (think it was refilling); happened in next door's room too which kept me awake at night. Street noise outside in morning, no apparent soundproofing. Towels thin and horrible 70s brown colour. Did not try breakfast. Would not stay here again without an update; at the moment it is not worth the price in my opinion - stayed in other hotels for similar price that were much nicer during my time in Japan.
- chellekaren (10/5): Friendly and homey staff - I stayed 1 night in new tohoku hotel before going to osaka.
Hotel is small but clean .its still in ueno area, walkable from ueno station.
I feel happy and grateful that the staff,
Mr.Naoki who is the reception at that time, help me to send my luggage. I couldnt be more thankful for that. Since the minimart dont even trying to help because of language problem.
Once again thank you for the warmness and care
Its a pleasant stay :)
- beo (8/5): tThe hotel is good - The hotel near Ueno JR and metro station. The staff was so nice and kind. Thank you them so much!
- pareja joven (6/5): Un poco justo pero correcto - Muy amables. Hotel cerca estacion y paqrque ueno.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Overall ok, but no elevator.
- nyashafo (8/5): Lovely hotel but hard to find at first - This hotel felt really comfortable to be in, like I was staying with a second family. I didn't get the breakfast included deal but it seems to begin from 6am - 9am from the way everyone got up and left the hotel. Walls are not too thin but you can hear a lot sometimes.
They do start cleaning from around 8 - 10am and do not clean your room if you leave later than that time.
I was going Fukuoka for a few days so they let me leave my suitcase with them until I got back. It can be a bit tricky to fine from Ueno JR station so ask for directions or use Google map.
You have air conditioning able to turn off and on when you like.
- RhiannonD20 (6/5): OK Hotel - This hotel is in a side street so keep your eyes open. The lovely locals in the area will point it out if you get lost (it happened to us!!) But as soon as you know where it is, it is super easy to find. It is a 5 minute walk to Ueno station - very convenient. There is a Lawson 4 minutes away for any food you may need. The hotel isn't anything fancy but it is comfortable and clean and as we stayed in winter - the heater was great!! the staff were nice and helpful. The bathroom was small (they all are in japan) but the shower was nice and hot. If you are on a budget this is a good hotel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Chris (6/5): OK Hotel to stay in Ueno - Price is OK, location is close to Ueno JR, but a bit old hotel, and remind for 2nd floor guest there's no lift that you need to take up and down your luggage on your own.
- ivan (4/5): Not recommended for family trip - The room is small! If stay at 2nd floor or above, you need to carry your luggage by yourself. It's 10mins walk from Metro and Skyliner. It's ok for staying one night for couples
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- kmaleelert (6/5): ok for backpackers - The room was small and smelly. It was good if you're not a fancy traveler.
The receptions can communicate fairly, they were friendly and useful with the map.
It was considered close to the train status and the shopping area is close.
There's a lot of convenient store around that area, you can get food and drinks very easily
- Verified traveler (6/5): 5 min walking from station - Home made county breakfast. It's easy distance from Ueno station. Not new building but clean. There is no elvator going up to your room. I had room on 3rd floor and my suite case was so heavy.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Hotel with great location yet quiet surrounding - This hotel is close to Ueno station but yet in a very quiet area. This is very nice.
Most (not all) Hotel staff are friendly and speak good english.
Room size is big with small bathroom (typical tokyo size). They provide free coffee in the morning and same day luggage storage. You can leave your luggage overnight only if you the next booking, otherwise they charge.
- Joe (10/5): Ueno 2015 - Always stay here when in Ueno..very nice staff & the location is perfect.
- Bruce (8/5): Great value - Not a luxury hotel but a great value for the money, clean, great location.
- 1st time Japan (8/5): Basics for great rate - Spent 2 nights. The staff varies quite a bit in how much English they speak. However they are all very helpful. Rooms are clean and have all the basics. Price is quite reasonable.3 or 4 block walk from the Ueno train station, tons of nearby restaurants and shopping opportunities. Also Ueno park (zoo and 3 or 4 museums) so plenty to do and see
all within a 10 minute walk.
- Doug (6/5): Japan Tripn - Not the easiest hotel to find but once you do, easy to get back to. 10 minute walk to Ueno Station which takes your u everywhere. Bathroom is the one piece unit and at 6'7" I was cramped. No complaint though, this IS Japan! Local eating establishments (various) within a 5 minute walk. (Ask the Front Desk about Yakitori!!!!)
- Thep (8/5): Convenient budget hotel - Convinent hotel close to Uaeno station , Ameyoko market. Too many restaurents are there. The room and the bed is quite small but acceptable. Wifi is strong signal. Receiptionist can speak english a little bit. I stayed 4 nights and I felt happy with this hotel. I will be back
- Wander Woman (8/5): Practical and Perfectly located - The hotel is a basic, no frills place. We got a first floor room with 2 double beds. There's a mini fridge (nothing inside, it's just a convenience for you), a hot water pot for tea (coffee is offered in the mornings at the lobby), and hotel kimonos with slippers for each patron. I didn't notice street noise, but then the road outside the window wasn't really built for cars. The beds were firm, but comfortable. For those that like pillow tops or memory foam, it may be considered really hard. They offered flatter or puffy pillows, just ask.
The bathroom is RV compact, but cute. The bathtub was deep, made for soaking while sitting. When you showered, the length of the tub was about as WIDE as my tub at home, so it was pretty tiny. The shower head wasn't adjustable and felt like needles in spots. Hot water was pretty immediate and HOT. Non-disposable shampoo, conditioner, and bath wash liquid was offered, as was disposable toothbrush/toothpaste and razors.
The nice staff also spoke some English.
The location is a 5 min walk to Ueno Station, which means that it's also a 5 min walk to: Ueno Park, Ameyoko Shopping Street, and the shopping markets of Ueno. Because of the Panda Bridge, which is just for pedestrians and goes over a huge traffic area, you didn't have to worry about cars or even a crosswalk. There were at least 5 restaurants in our walking path between the hotel and the station. AND there's also a 24 hr convenience store within 3 minutes of the hotel.
- Thitaporn (10/5): Nice and Clean - Staff can speak English and nice to help. It's has a food around hotel.
- Andrew (8/5): Good cheap option - Tricky to find but conveniently placed near Ueno Station. Helpful staff, no frills and not exactly modern, but clean and comfortable place to stay.
- Ryan (8/5): Great location friendly staff - Great location moments away from Ueno station with lots of bars and restaurants around. Very helpful and friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice , convinance and good location Hotel - It is good location. Near JR station for easy to travel.
Receptions are nice.
Clean hotel.
- Jerry (10/5): Will definitely stay here again! - Comfortable room reflected the price, Lovely Staff, will definitely stay here again.
- Joe (10/5): Staying at New Touhoku in Ueno - Very nice & near the best area in Ueno Tokyo. Great service & nice folks running the place.. I will stay there again next year..
- PMD (8/5): Nice hotel , close to Ueno JR station - Easy to reach the hotel, just 10 minutes walk from Ueno JR station. There is escalator on the footbridge so it's very convenience for those who carry big luggages.
- Michael Charles (6/5): Well placed for Ueno - The hotel is well placed for exploring Ueno Park and its surrounding shops and restaurants. It is only a mere 10-minute walk from the Skyliner station with direct connection to Narita Airport.
The staff are generally friendly and helpful and are able to converse in basic English. Rooms are spacious by Tokyo standards but are basic. Like most Tokyo hotels, the toilets are small.
The only setback is that there is no elevator in the hotel so if carrying your luggage up 2 flights of steps is a problem for you it is best to ask to be on the ground floor.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great budget hotel in Tokyo - Tokyo is expensive. It is a city that costs a lot an this hotel helped us save. It was affordable in a convenient location. The staff were kind and the facilities (laundry) were helpful.
There is no elevator but it is not a big deal.
The rooms are small but clean. The bed was quite small for the two of us but it was cozy. I appreciated the yukata and slippers for us.
It is just minutes away from the Ueno station. Just take the Irita exist and go across the pedestrian bridge to ensure you are on the right track.
- Will I Am (6/5): Hotel Closes at 2am!! - The hotel is priced at a lower range and hence i didn't expect too much from it. But still in saying that, Japanese never disappointed and still shows their attitude in terms of customer service. The room is clean, bedding is clean and tidy, just the exhaust fan is a bit noisy. Room size is reasonable, but the bathroom is narrow as per usual Japanese hotels. The only thing I could complain is the location - its not that straight forward hence better to pay your patience to look around. The location on Google Map is exactly correct - so just follow instructions ^_^ . The other thing is I was returning at 2:05am after drinking with my friend but found that the hotel was closed - lucky after a while the keeper opened the door for me and advised me about the closing time. If you pay attention on it and you won't have the same trouble as me. In general the experience is not bad.
