Guest Reviews
- Marples (2/5): Disappointing stay because room not as pictured and various issues. - The location. Room was not as advertised. Dimly lit. No horse picture in room. No nightstands. Toilet button broken so water kept running unless you pulled it out when done. The outlet by the desk didn’t work so had to use coffee maker on floor by the entrance where there was a working outlet and flat surface. Tripped when entering the room because there’s a step down not well marked - Room #14. Including photos of the quadruple economy room we booked, you can compare them to photos from website. Reached out to management, was told day later no other rooms available and they’re sorry for the issues and will have maintenance look into it. We were only there two days so maintenance didn’t look into it while we were there, though housekeeping did enter the room our first morning there and said we were on the list as checking out that day. Maybe just confusion but surprising nonetheless. Missing light in one of the hallways.
- Pauline (8/5): Very friendly small hotel. - Location is superb, walking distance to the museums and restaurants. Direct city bus 397 to and from airport. The friendliest front desk staff and a complimentary cappuccino macine in the lobby.
- Tenzin (4/5): - there was no air conditioning in the room. the building was like a green house with no ventilation.
- Lisa (8/5): Very good -
- Bairon (2/5): - The air conditioning in our room was broken. No one to help us so we had 4 people sleeping in a really overwhelming and hot room. The next day the shower was clogged and only one person got to shower.
- Majd (1/5): I couldn’t stay at all and immediately left the property - I didn’t like it at all, i checked in and everything was very dirty. Not professional at all.
- Elizabeth (6/5): Nice, but probably wouldn’t stay there again. - Great location with friendly staff. There was no air conditioning. We tried turning it on, but no cool air was coming out. We couldn’t even open the window the whole way because the curtain rack was in the way.
- Hu (7/5): Good - Staff is nice, clean No elevator, a little far from train station. Mosquito!!!!
- Karthikkumar (4/5): - AC did not work... No fan...super uncomfortable ...
- Kgs (8/5): Very good - Didn’t have breakfast The room seemed cramped and the stairs was very narrow with luggage especially,
Location was a great plus. Very close to train stations, restaurants, park and museums.
Issue with bathroom fitting was fixed promptly, front desk personnel were helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The room had aircon but this did not work. Would of been happy to open window but they did not open in our room
- Jaedlo (5/5): Passable -
- Pamela (4/5): Really hot room - When we arrived the reception was closed, with a sign saying that there had been an issue and that they will be back "soon". There was a number to call, which we did but no one pick up. We were there tired and with our bags and with no idea of how long it will take for them to come back. Someone did come after around 15min.
The staff were really friendly and nice, the room was ok.
The main issue is that the A/C was not working, it was really hot. They had a big "mobile A/C" that was really loud, but was not delivering cool air, even the "fan" setting was very bad. Between the heat and the noise it was really difficult to sleep.
- WilliamW100 (2/5): Long list of faults. - Tiny room that appeared to be a converted cupboard.
Very little natural light (small skylight), that was covered and required the use of a (broken) stick to uncover.
No natural ventilation - far too hot and stuffy and was impossible to open a window because there was no window. It should not be allowed to rent a room with no natural ventilation.
Shower temperature control was broken (switch spring missing) meant excessive force had to be used to change the temperature. This will break completely at some point, and the persons staying there will have no shower.
Tiles in shower were showing black mould.
Drain in the sink did not drain properly - some sort of blockage.
Shower room did not have a shower curtain or shower door - meant the entire bathroom was wet after a shower.
Shower room had no ventilation, which meant the room got steamy after somebody used a shower.
Asked for a twin room - not a double. Was a double and had to re-arrange furniture and beds.
Have stayed at this hotel in the past and have a good experience. This was absolutely awful and would NOT recommend unless these problems were fixed. It was literally worse than a youth hostel.
With this level of service I expect a refund
- Antonio (8/5): Very good -
- Eemeli (7/5): Good - Location was nice, relatively cheap option The room was a bit messy, dust and spiderwebs, no fridgerator, it was very hot inside.
- John (10/5): - Clean and affordable
- Beijing (7/5): Great location, clean, spacious, but rooms were really hot. - Location was great and the staff was all really nice and friendly. The room is clean and quite spacious. I am not sure if the AC was actually working. It was very hot in the rooms. We had 3 rooms and all of them were very hot even though we turned on the AC. One of the rooms was so hot that they proactively placed a fan in the room when we first checked in.
One of toilet seat wasn't secure, so moved when you sat down. One of the shower backed up water, but the staff was able to fix that relatively quickly.
- Katie (5/5): Passable - Staff were nice, location was great. Air conditioning unit in the room didn't work, and no attempts were made to resolve the situation.
- Cayley (6/5): Good location but quite run-down - Friendly and helpful staff members, capsule coffee machines in the rooms and a convenient location near Vondel Park and the Museum Quarter. Really hot and stuffy in the room without air conditioning (the windows don’t open and the ventilation system is old, so the fan just circulates warm air). Lots of stains on the sheets, curtains, and walls. The shower also didn’t drain properly.
- Huong (7/5): Decent place. A bit pricey. - not too far from train station steep stairs
- Kian (3/5): Poor -
- Anonymous (6/5): Location is good, staff was friendly and helpful but A/C didn't work in our room. - Location, bicycle rentals, room except air conditioner, staff Air conditioner didn't work properly.
- Iqra (10/5): Exceptional -
- H4658RHnicolag (6/5): It’s fine - Very basic accommodation. We were in a triple room. The safe did not work on arrival but this was fixed very quickly. Sink and shower drain very slowly meaning the shower cubicle leaks. Cupboard was unstable making it unusable. One section of carpet at the cupboard was soaking wet, hopefully from being cleaned but who knows. Did not dry out whilst we were there. General damp smell. Nothing to open/close skylight shutter with so had to stand on a chair each time (no window). Walls are really thin making it very noisy. Staff were lovely and location good. I wouldn’t stay again.
- Hossein (2/5): - Not a clean property, rooms are not in good shapes.
- Bustos (7/5): Good -
- Jussi (6/5): Pleasant -
- Aleksandr (9/5): It was a great stay overall - The location was great, near the center, all goods were available. The room was good and more importantly AC was there, which is rare for the Amsterdam. Check-in was easy-go, as well as check-out. A little bit dirty walls
- Wendy (2/5): Very poor -
- Monroe (8/5): Very good - Very conveniently located. Close to Rijksmuseum and trams. Room was decently clean. It was nice that there was free coffee and tea at the lobby and in the room. Staff was nice and present all day. Room had ac which was nice since we were there during a heat wave. Our room just had a view of a roof. There is no elevator, so do not recommend if you have mobility issues or a lot of luggage. Also wish there might have been more shelfs like in the shower for example.
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrea (8/5): Very good -
- Mnssr (7/5): Good -
- Albina (2/5): This stay was extremely disappointing, and for the high price we paid. - posizione buona molto vicino alle fermate del tram, staff si mostra cordiale I rarely write negative reviews, but my experience at this hotel in Amsterdam was far below expectations, especially considering the price we paid. While the staff were polite and helpful, that’s unfortunately the only positive thing I can say.
We booked a more expensive room specifically because it was supposed to have windows that open — but the reality was completely different. The room looked nothing like the photos: it was old, dark, and had a depressing atmosphere. The windows couldn't be opened at all, and the entire space felt poorly maintained.
What shocked us most was the level of cleanliness — or rather, the complete lack of it. The floor was dirty, and under the bed we found cigarette butts, earplugs, and empty bottles. Not just once, but on both days of our stay, clearly showing that no proper cleaning had been done. Dust was everywhere, and one of the lights wasn’t working either.
To make matters worse, the air conditioner was leaking water onto the floor, creating a slippery and unpleasant mess, and the sink drain was clogged, so water wouldn’t go down properly.
After the first night, we went to the reception and kindly asked for someone to clean the sticky stains we found on the doors and tables and to fix the broken light. The light was eventually fixed — but no one cleaned the room. We ended up wiping the sticky surfaces ourselves with just water. It wouldn’t have taken much effort to do it properly, which only highlights how little attention is given to cleanliness here.
This stay was extremely disappointing, and for the high price we paid, we expected at least basic standards to be met. So many services were missing or poorly handled. I definitely would not return and do not recommend this hotel to anyone.
- Elenacrive (4/5): Disappointing - Location is good Totally overpriced for a room without a window in the basement, and dirty
- Paola (6/5): Pleasant - Convenient location, walkable distance to Museum area and city Centrum No window in the room, Uncomfortable mattress and pillow, stains on the carpert
- Suma (2/5): Not worth it - location was the only redeeming quality about this place We came to this hotel with high expectations and were left extremely disappointed. To start off, on the day we arrived, we had to wait outside for 15 minutes because they had locked their doors for their holiday. Only after calling them multiple times were we let in. We were then given no help to get to our room, even though our keycard access was limited. This was just the start of the poor service that all staff members gave us. Instead the people that were keeping the staff busy were drunk patrons outside the hotel due to their holiday
The room was very poor. Our room looked out at a restaurant at a basement level which meant we got no natural lighting. On top of that, one of the two light bulbs in the room was not working, which meant more darkness. The space was cramped, and the bathroom was extremely unhygienic, and it had a FOUL smell.
Unlike most hotels, they were also extremely unhelpful with advice and tips for getting around Amsterdam. This was something we noticed with other guests as well. When we asked them simple questions like where to get bottled water, they shrugged and didn't help us. Additionally, multiple times when we would stop by the hotel, the front desk was unstaffed which was quite concerning considering that multiple people have to leave their bags in the front lobby where nobody is watching clearly.
For people wondering, we would not recommend this hotel. You can get hotels around this area with better service, better facilities. They are unlikely to listen to your concerns or help you.
- Karen (10/5): Great spot - Convenient and clean. Nothing
- Scott (6/5): - Staff was friendly. The rooms were hot. There was no windows that would open and he fans provided were very loud and didn’t work very well. We were there in June and the outside temp was only 12-18 degrees, couldn’t imagine it when the weather was 30
- Filazi (8/5): Very good -
- Fabiano (4/5): Good place Bad beds - Excellent location and easy access from the airport to the hotel.
The staff provided kind and friendly service, making the stay even more pleasant. Highly appreciated! While the service was impeccable and the location truly excellent, we unfortunately encountered some issues that significantly affected our comfort:
The room was very hot, and the air conditioning did not work.
The beds were uncomfortable, and the mattress was extremely bad, making it very difficult to sleep—we even considered sleeping on the floor.
To improve the guest experience and potentially increase your rating, I would recommend:
Replacing the mattresses with more comfortable options
Repairing the air conditioning units
Providing fans as an alternative in case of malfunction
- Monique (8/5): Very good -
- Emela (8/5): Very good - Clean room and everthing one needs for a short stay.
- Mauro (6/5): Pleasant -
- Zeynep (5/5): good location, still expensive - location was fine we didn’t like the bathroom. the ligthing was bad, going to the rooms with stairs was har with bags
- Joseph (2/5): - Very disappointing stay. All of the workers we met were very nice, and the daily cleaning was a highlight. But the air conditioner was not working for us and several other guests that we talked to. And this led to unbearable temperatures at night. At least our room should not be available for use in the summer months until the issue is resolved. Bathroom mold on the ceiling was unattractive, no channels on the old television (though you can stream to it on your device), despite the picture there is no restaurant….I don’t understand how it is rated 3 stars.
- Brandan (9/5): The stay was great loved basically everything besides the hot room with the AC that did not cool - The bed was super comfy and the shower was really nice! The location was good and central and I enjoyed the stay The AC in the room did not work so that was way to warm in the room only reason I didn’t give a 10/10.
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional -
- Natalia (4/5): Disappointing -
- Büşra (5/5): I will not stay here again - Konum Resepsiyon ve banyo
- Nazli (5/5): Passable -
- Luis (5/5): Hi neighbor - Good location The staff was bad, comedy bad staff level. The guy was seeing a tv show when I arrive and that was more important then my check-in. Besides that the walls were paper thin, I could here the conversation of the room next to me
- Arshan (5/5): Passable - Location AC, View, STAFF,
- Oliver (10/5): - Fantastic 3-person room with great bay window and super high ceiling on the hotel's 2nd floor! Only critique would be the bathroom ventalization, which is non-existent, but not a deal-breaker for 3 guys passing through.
- Callum (5/5): Passable -
- John (8/5): - Thé Iron Horse Hôtel is wonderfully situated near many important sites. The staff is exceptional and I would like to especially mention Bianca, Angela, William and Khalid. The room was clean the free coffee much appreciated and room temperature was agreeable. All in all, a highly recommendable establishment.
- Nathan (8/5): Very good -
- johntW8739IM (8/5): A really nice stay - Excellent, efficient and very knowledgeable staff. Special thanks to Bianca, William, Angela and Khalid. Room was clean ample space, everything was fine. Highly recommend.
- Sharon (9/5): Superb -
- Stephen (8/5): Good location for the Leidesplein - Great location for the Leidesplein and museums. Our room was quite spacious and a decent bathroom. Day staff really helpful and friendly. Our room had water seeping in the corner from the rain. Carpet very wet. One of the other rooms the A/C didn't work and the room was hot (windows didn't open).
- Bryan (7/5): Good - The bed was comfortable and close to some good bars The staff member on reception wasn't particularly friendly but was professional
- Aniello (10/5): Exceptional - small but functional room, with everything you need. tram Nearby to move around the city. And Angelica she s a super-owner, kind and helpful. ❣️
- Olga (9/5): Nice and cozy - Super friendly and helpful staff 🧡 cozy room, great location
- Kim (1/5): Bad -
- Spyros (8/5): Very good -
- Mohammed (3/5): Stayed a few nights—location was fine, but the experience wasn’t great. Reception staff were not very friendly, and the - Location was good. Uncomfortable bed
Not very friendly reception
- Anonymous (2/5): Hotel needs a upgrade.not a very comfortable stay - Location. Price. Very noisy, staff slamming doors til 1:30am. 2/3 of the staff were very rude. Room was very Warm. Lots of mosquitoes in the room.
- StevieH1965 (8/5): Good location, clean and tidy. - We were there as a party of 6 adults. The location of the Hotel was excellent for what we wanted. Close to the Leidseplein. We had 3 rooms, mine was quite roomy, but in the corner the carpet was very wet and started to spread the more it rained. ( A carpet cleaner was outside the door the day we left, maybe they were aware of it). I did mention it to the man on reception one evening but I don't think he understood what I was trying to tell him. The other 2 rooms were a bit smaller but good enough for a few nights. One was hot as the A/C did not work ( Windows do not open).
Staff in the day time were really helpful with enquiries.
Overall I would stay here again despite the little problems we had. Rooms were clean with coffee machine/pods in each room.
- Ann (5/5): Passable - The location is phenomenal We had the large room #401 and it was dirty with mold growing around the windows and bathroom tiles. The shower door was off the track and therefore water leaked out. There were no luggage racks or dressers but instead there were 4 random dining type chairs that we used for our bags. The large window about the primary bed wouldn't close and the noise level was incredibly high. The staff don't even acknowledge your presence other than the nice women who checked us out.
- Kathryn (8/5): Very good -
- Diancy (4/5): - Too expensive for the hotel’s conditions.
- Richard (6/5): Perfect location, though we might’ve been unlucky with our room. - What I liked most about the property was its fantastic location. It’s just a few steps away from the city center, making it incredibly convenient to explore everything. Highly recommend for those who want to be close to the center with a cheaper option. Unfortunately, the room was not in good condition. The walls had leaks, the bathroom had mold, and some areas were visibly dirty. To make matters worse, the air conditioning didn’t work, making the room extremely hot. The front desk did provide a fan for the night (which helped a little), and they mentioned they’d send maintenance to check the mold—but no one ever came, and we never got an update. It was disappointing, especially given the otherwise great location.
- Anonymous (4/5): Disappointing - Warm water supply and clean room We were put up on the 4th floor and the stairs were too high…making it very difficult to climb up and down with our luggage….the person at the reception was not at all welcoming and did not really help in most of the queries we had…bad attitude
- Bronwyn (8/5): Very good - Room and bathroom were nice. My room was on the 3rd level. I had to drag my heavy bag up multiple flights of a narrow, winding staircase. I'm not a young person and had booked a basement room. The only staff person I saw was the desk clerk, so no help with my bag. Asked if there was a room on a lower floor and was told no. I had another reservation for a return stay later that week and I cancelled it. Just couldn't see myself struggling with my luggage again up about six flights of stairs.
- The.fucking.panda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anne (8/5): Good stay - Recommend it! - The location was great, very central There is no elevator, only stairs so be prepared to carry luggage up the stairs
- Elena (7/5): Good - Great location and big room The staff was unfortunately quite rude during our stay. Additionally, our room’s windows directly overlooked the restaurant’s garden area, offering little to no privacy, we could clearly see diners from our room. As a result, we felt compelled to keep the curtains closed throughout our entire visit.
- Victor (10/5): - Pretty good, well located, small rooms
- Alaaddin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zoe (3/5): Not very comfortable due to the dingy nature of the room - The location was great The room and bathroom smelt damp as there was a leak , we think from the air conditioning vent, it felt dingy
- Felicita (10/5): - Clean, location walkable
- Amr (7/5): Good - I enjoyed how you could get in the main entrance all night using your room key, handy vending machine on bottom floor, cosy clean room, the cleaners were lovely When I arrived to check in the young woman on reception was in the middle of a personal call and I had to stand and wait until she decided to acknowledge me, she then kept the phone to her ear and tried to keep on with her conversation while dealing with me.
- Ali (8/5): Very good -
- Johan (10/5): - It provided what we needed and staff were friendy
- Martin (7/5): Good -
- Nejla (7/5): Good - The staff was nice, and multiple trams were accessible in walking distance. The room was clean, and the hotel was in good condition in general. For the four friends group, it was ideal for us to be able to stay in the same room. The size of the room was also good. There was no elevator, we had to carry our luggages up and down four floors. The pillows were standard, and it was very high for me to sleep comfortably.
- Hélène (6/5): - La reception, pas tres propre
- Grant (4/5): - No AC. Terribly warm and rather uncomfortable
- Constanza (8/5): Very good -
- Jovana (3/5): Clean and well-located, but overall disappointing. I wouldn’t return or recommend it. - Clean and well-located, close to the city center. Unfortunately, there were several issues during our stay. There was no hot water on the first day, and the room was cold. When we asked to move to another room, we were told there were no available rooms. After insisting several times, we were given a much smaller room that was also cold. The staff didn’t know why the heating wasn’t working, so they gave us a small heater instead.
- Sadie (7/5): Good - Loved the comfy beds and pillows, the coffee machine was great too.stadf were lovely. Sink in our room didn't drain water for ages...! Also some mould high above our wardrobe on the walls.
- Hannah (4/5): Disappointing - Location was good The bathroom had not been cleaned properly. Also the bathroom cabinets had rusted .
- Daryna (9/5): Superb -
- Roger (8/5): great location good price - great location good value, coffee machine, close to transport and main museum hard to use stairs and basement room without ventilation, no breakfas except coffeet
- Shefalee (8/5): -
The hotel is convenient, clean and overall fine. I usually like rooms with big windows and this was perfect, but I realised since my room faced the street, it could be quite noisy till later in the night.
Apart from that, the location is very good, walking distance from the Museum Quarter, and the Leidseplein tram and bus stops. There is a supermarket next door and it helps.
The reception staff at Hotel Iron House was very helpful and courteous.
- Zdravkov (9/5): Superb - I stayed there twice and I am pleased of my staying! The second night I’ve had a big room, isolated from the other guests and I was able to sleep and rest well! The bathroom was big and beds were comfortable and clean.
- Robert (7/5): Comfy, affordable stay in excellent location for those not wanting to pay for unnecessary extras. - It’s a very good value hotel for the location. You don’t get lots of frills like views or extra facilities, the decor is basic and no breakfast facilities. But it’s clean, comfy, staff responded to questions and the location is ideal on central outer ring. Lots of shops, cafes, transport within close walking distance. Also was quiet stay with low/ no noise disturbances.
Room was little noisy with air con but stafff hallled reduce that for me. Had a very nice ensuite too, For the money it’s very hard to be picky. Maybe my basement room was a little unexpected and access to it not great. But Amsterdam properties do have narrow stairs tbh.
Maybe the pre auth of credit card could have been clearer as looked like double charge but again resolved very swiftly by staff.
- Shaan (7/5): Good - Nice and clean and comfortablee No fridge in the room and the rooms r very dimly lit
- Pamela (10/5): The location, price and room size was good for a short term stay. - Staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel and the room were clean. The location is perfect for exploring Central Amsterdam and for a short term stay. There is no elevator but we were offered a ground floor room. The room was small.
