Guest Reviews
- ZHENGJIE (8/5): - This hotel is located in the center of Sydney downtown. It is very convenient to everywhere, and many tour attractions are in walkable distance. Its price in this CBD area is properly lowest - best value! But the hotel condition is quite old, in addition to sharing-bathrooms - you need to walk through the hall-way to bathroom from your bedroom. Also no "front desk", the AC in our room was not working, I reported to the staff in bar and we did not get the AC fixed until we checked-out 2 days late.
- Crystal (10/5): - Easy check-in and check-out. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I loved how many places were in walking distance. We would stay here again.
- Scott (6/5): - Check in was challenging; no one to contact and phone numbers wouldn’t work. Luckily someone was there to assist. We arrived on a Sunday - no staff, the bar and restaurants where the website directs were closed (also closed on Mondays). They need a better system.
- Consuelo (6/5): - Shops & tours close by
- Michael (8/5): - Great start y
- John (2/5): - We were disgusted with the noise all night into the early hours, we had no hot water in the shower or the hand basin, no hairdryer, the air conditioner would not heat, when I called downstairs to hotel manager, he eventually came to our room and stated the sign on the bathroom wall explained......the sign read, Due to low water pressure, you need to run the water for at least 10 mins before it will come through hot, sorry for the inconvenience !! Well, the water pressure was great, not a problem, worst is what about the amount of water being wasted.
I request a refund for our 2 night stay. The room also had a musty smell.
- Bjorn (10/5): - Stay here often and great value for money.
- KAREN (10/5): - Atmosphere
- Glenn (8/5): - Great location
- Fiona (6/5): - Thought the hotel was open Sundays, but wasn't. Called the noted numbers upon arrival to gain access.
- Jennifer (6/5): - Fabulous location, quirky heritage building, however, no hot water and large informal rough sleeping community in abandoned building next door.
- Debbie (10/5): - Very clean and tidy, staff very helpful
- linda (8/5): - Great place to stay
- Les (6/5): - It was nothing fancy, just a convenient, clean & cheap room for the night
- earl (10/5): - Great for the price. Read description to be sure its what youre looking for. Located next to everything.
- Ross (10/5): - Staff was great for checking in and helpful with the whole process. Shared bathroom was very clean & tidy.
- Michelle (8/5): - Cheap nice rooms clean and good meals
- Adrian (10/5): - It's excellent value for money. The rooms are comfortable and clean and Wynyard Station is a block away, meaning you can roll out of bed and jump on the train to wherever you want to go. Would definitely stay there again.
- Kristen (8/5): - It was a community style bathroom that was unexpected. It was all clean enough and we never had trouble accessing toilets or showers when we needed them. Our room was a little too small for all the furniture they had in there. You could only open the fridge part way as it hit the bed. It was tight to maneuver around each other and the furniture.
Still the amenities were nice to have. We were able to store our luggage there after check out while we waited for our flights the last day. That was very helpful. The staff were helpful and friendly enough, though not easily gotten hold of. The price was very great. We would consider staying again. We loved the area. It was easy access to loads of everything.
- Kevin (10/5): Budget hotel for the discerning traveller - This hotel is ideally situated for my occasional visits to Sydney. It is a true budget hotel, pretty basic and shared bathrooms, toilets etc. I only need a bed for the night and a base camp for my luggage on my visits to Sydney and the price is right for my needs.
One of the last true bargain hotel deals left in Sydney.
Ideal for the older travellers who are not keen on backpacker lodgings.
It's nice to have a fully functional old style Sydney pub downstairs as well.
- tony (6/5): - Great location right in the centre of the city walking distance to all the sites including, Sydney harbour Bridge, opera house and Darling Harbour. Just remember this is an old budget hotel so don’t expect modern facilities.
- linda (10/5): - The bed was ok
- Shubham Subrot (10/5): - Great stay
- Darren (6/5): - An old building that needs updating, room was a good size but again needs updating, there was hot water but it takes at least 10 mins to come through this was explained to us as low water pressure, an inconvenience but not a problem, the bar was its saving grace, very good beers and food
- Graham (8/5): - Did what it said cheap and cheerful accommodation when just want get your head down
- Donna (8/5): - It's cheap, clean, relatively quiet and staff always helpful. Shared bathrooms very rarely saw anyone else. Place is old but clean.
- Rogue (8/5): - Exactly what they advertised, clean, local and a bit noisy. Would stay again!
- Emely (4/5): - I liked how convenient it was to public transport and city center. Hotel is inside/on top of a noisy pub and place feels old and worn down. A place to sleep and clean sheets at a cheap rate.
- Ria (10/5): - Gooe
- Karin (8/5): - Great value in a perfect location for a walkable Sydney. Stayed with family of 4, 2 teen boys. Very clean. Staff were very polite but only present and available at limited times. Only real complaint was the window did not block noise from the street at all and the boys had trouble sleeping.
- Geoff (6/5): - .
- Andrew (10/5): - Unique original historic property.
- Jean (8/5): - Nice hotel in a nice area of Sydney CBD n close to
Everything
- Brent (10/5): - Great economical place to stay in central Sydney
- Logan (10/5): - -
- Eamon (10/5): - Great stay
- Verified traveler (4/5): Bring earplugs - What this hotel has going for it is the price and location and that's just about it, where you must bring a pair of earplugs if you are staying.
It is in dire need of a thorough makeover, especially the windows that are so old and of such a poor quality, that you can hear everything going on at street level, including the sound givers by the traffic lights for the seeing impaired. Add to that the constant rattling if there is just a bit of wind and then imagine the horror concert you are in for if there is a minor storm going on, which my companion and I experienced in each of us' rooms. It was so bad that I had to use one of the towels to try and keep the window in place in my room, to try and keep it from keeping me up all night.
And if it wasn't the windows, then between the rooms are flimsy (locked) doors through which you can hear most of what is going on in the adjacent rooms plus the water pipes that run through the rooms from top to bottom also make noise when used on the other floors.
The shared toilets and bathrooms should therefore be the least of your worries if you choose to stay at this hotel, but having been subject to the concert of horrors for multiple nights it does want to make you contemplate to just go in the sink...
Whomever has given this hotel 3 stars here on Google must either not have stayed here overnight or been so inebriated that nothing could wake this person up.
2 stars is therefore all I can give it.
- sharon (6/5): - Nicè and close to the OPT, perfectly situated for sleep over before our cruise.
- Christopher (6/5): - The room I stayed in this time had cracks in doors and black tape around the adjoining door with a small latch lock. It might be heritage listed hence the old doors but it was a little creepy for a five hour sleep. Shared bathroom and shower area with two of each is large.
- Travis Livingston (8/5): - The staff were very friendly, and the rooms were always clean. The property is older though it's kept up nicely. Hot water was in consistent, and the room heater didn't always work.
- Colin (6/5): - Good location. Good bar and restaurant. Room okay. Good cheap stop-over.
- PETER (10/5): - Excellent stay with everything as described. The beer and food served in the pub was fantastic.
- Christopher (8/5): - Full microwave kitchenette. Rustic. Beds comfirtable. A little street noise.
- Justine (10/5): - Great place to stay in the city. Right next to Wynyard Station
- Natasha (8/5): - Close to Wynyard station, and pretty central.
It was a bit odd to check-in, I wasn’t sure where to go and had to wait a bit for the manager, but no issues with customer service.
The facilities are decent and overall clean. The toilet and showers are separate.
I would have preferred to have an internal lock in addition to the key lock, but that’s more a preference.
I would stay again, definitely a good budget option.
- Anne (8/5): - Great place for the centre of the city, can be a little noise at times. Rooms are clean. Staff are friendly and helpful. Would stay here again.
- Mark (10/5): - Comingfromtheairportitissoconvient
- Maria (4/5): - Poor maintenance. Our window wasn’t working ok. Quite smelly room, lift and all place. Walls are super thin. We had people in next door rooms staying up till very late and we couldn’t sleep with the noise. Service was good. Location is great close to main Sidney places at walking distances but I wouldn’t stay there again.
- Dylan (10/5): - Wonderful place to stay, location is so convenient for transport and shopping. House keeping do a great job
- Grace (10/5): - Very comfortable, I had no issue with the facility. Pub style room, made me feel close to home.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - This magnificent 175 year iold grand lady was a delightful place to stay in. Location was superb. Transport at the door to cbd, airport, Central everywhere. Outstanding value for money in Sydney. Helpful friendly staff and very vlean bathrooms. A range of Dining options very nearby including at The occidental. We loved the grace of this beautiful heritage building.
- Jisan (10/5): - Location was greet
- Cary (8/5): - Good position and friendly staff.. room very basic but clean. Overall good value.
- sang (8/5): Location is great - Price ok. Great location. Washroom was conveniently.
- Deborah (8/5): - Great location and easy to get to public transport. Very popular pub, basic accommodation but great price. Will be back
- Ann (10/5): - Polite staff ,great meals and very reasonable priced
- A (8/5): Good short stay - Old but modernised hotel in very convenient location. Long time for hot water to arrive and lot of traffic noise but otherwise a good stay.
- Kevan (8/5): - Pros :- ideally placed location to explore the famous city sights
Good size bedroom (the 3 beds version) with clean comfortable beds
Nice clean shower room
Helpful friendly staff
Cons:-
It’s more of a noisy pub downstairs with rooms above than a hotel
Can be a bit noisy at night (best if on 4th or 5th floor)
Decor, carpets etc a bit worn out/tired
Verdict: ok for short stays and very central
- Christine (10/5): - Was good for price and dropped bags off before checkin was very convenient thanks we were going on cruise so was easy to get to cruise terminal recomend hotel
- Donna (8/5): - Suited my needs, excellent staff and perfect location
- David (8/5): Great value, just control smoking better - Great calue and location! Please enforce smoking better. Guests were smoking in the showers and bathrooms. Disgusting!
- Abigail (4/5): - Go somewhere else - it’s cheap and nasty. Rooms are very dated, shared bathroom isn’t very clean, there is no reception so you have to go to the bar staff to make requests,it’s quite loud outside and overall wasn’t very pleasant
- Stephen (8/5): - Cheap, solid and convenient last minute stay early in the week….painless checking, will use again!
- William (8/5): - The staff was great, provided a place to drop our bags prior to checkin time. The internet was spotty on the morning we left, but it may have just been a bad day because it was fine the day before. There were only bath towels, no hand towels or facecloths.
- WAI YEE VERA (8/5): - No reception
- David (10/5): - Good hotel for the price, it is in an amazing location near everything, however it can get a bit noisy sometimes.
- Winston (6/5): Best about The Occidental Hotel - The hotel is in downtown area, easily access to train, light rail and buses. Nearby (within 15 minutes walk) major attractions of Sydney (Opera House, Queen's Victoria Building, cruise terminal......)
- Eduardo (8/5): - A small table lamp would do wonders for them. Other than that, everything was as expected. Would recommend this place to anyone who's only staying in Sydney for a few days and doesn't mind sharing bathrooms or loud street noise till 2am.
- Cheree (8/5): - It was Mardi gras weekend, so it was noisy. But it was good for the price.
- Stephen (8/5): Good location - Good location. Cheap affordable price. Use shower and toilet with other users.
- Deborah (8/5): - We enjoyed our stay. Unfortunately our Room 31 was a bit smelly. It was very clean. I don’t know if it was the ventilation or the fact that the hotel is old. All the staff were friendly and the room was comfortable.
- Brendon (10/5): - Great for a quick stay
- Geoffrey (8/5): - Needs towel rack or hooks to hang towels on
- Angela (8/5): - Very convenient for our needs.
- Sam (6/5): - Check in was difficult as we arrived early and there is no one there until three to check in. Wasn’t a major issue but as the hotel is a pub first and hotel second was difficult to get new towels and shampoo etc. however was clean room and staff did respond to any issues. Location is amazing and overall was a good place to stay
- Steven (10/5): - Great hotel in the perfect position. Highly recommended.
- Maree (6/5): - Great location, comfy bed, good sized room and very clean but too noisy ; super loud from street and road noise all night and shower took ten minutes to get hot! Overall I would not stay again as I'm a light sleeper.
- Ardian (2/5): - Not hot water very noisy on Saturday, no cleaning the bathroom
- Lorene (10/5): - Close to a lot of attractions . Friendly staff
- Wayne (8/5): - Room was on 4th floor and there was traffic noise, mainly sirens, which was to be expected given city centre location.
We had a private bathroom which made it.all the more convenient. Hot water took a long time to come through but this was shown.on signs so you were.aware.on arrival.
Would stay again. Less than a block to Wynyard Station.
- Russell (10/5): - Well priced , great location , convenient , great staff
- Mark (8/5): - I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the bed and cleanliness of the room. The shower took 10mins to warm up. There was signage to flag this which was appreciated. I would stay here again.
- Celia María (6/5): - Perfect location
- Jonathan (10/5): - Convenient, good location, friendly staff
- Joel (6/5): - Clean
- Jakub (4/5): - I'm sorry to say, but the room was dirty and did smell like cigarettes, what I hare. When we talked to manager about it he said it's a 'hotel smell'.
- Karen (8/5): - Great location close to all transport.Clean tidy rooms recommend this hotel we stayed a friday night very noisy people out till 3.30 am enjoying themselves .
- Rowena (6/5): - Was not a bad stay. Liked the pub downstairs was busy but staff not that friendly🙂
- Melanie (8/5): - The staff member who checked us out was very helpful, the rooms were clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Thought I’d find a shared bathroom challenging but it wasn’t an issue at all
- Ofelia (10/5): - This is an awesome nostalgic hotel. It is 175 years old. The manager Jamie was very kind and courteous. Gave us a history lesson on the hotel. If you like nostalgia, this is the place,
- Bernadette (8/5): Very good youth hostel type private room - A cheap private room youth hostel style (shared bathroom). It was our choice. Good bedding and private space Good area close to tourist area.
- Glenn (10/5): - Fantastic location, friendly and responsive staff, good price, great pub downstairs, you can't beat it!
- Karen (10/5): - Good for the price
- Lynn (8/5): - This hotel room was very impressive for an economy room. Had good air conditioner, microwave, fridge, tv, window with greenery outside, tea and coffee with jug, very clean, confortable bed. Shared bathroom facilities good and safe. Also a lift. Close to Martin Place and Wynyard so excellent location. Staff pleasant and helpful. You are given a room key and a key to get into hotel after hours. Am happy to stay again.
- Kristian (8/5): - A great budget stay. Clean, quiet with vintage appeal.
- Beth (6/5): - Staff were quite rude at check in however I think this may be because it’s also a very busy pub.
Good happy hour in the bar.
Showers etc were good.
There was a leak from the aircon and one outside our door - I did contact the hotel whilst we were there however as it was a Sunday no one was on site and I didn’t get a reply
- John (6/5): - Friendly staff. Jackhammer works after midnight a nightmare, outside hotel. What is the city thinking?
- Geoff (8/5): - Bit of rubbish behind bedside table from previous stays. An Iron would be good in room; Friendly staff, very comfortable.
- Trevor (8/5): - Basic but comfortable, warm showers and very comfortable beds and one of the best stakes I've had in a long long time.
- Dyan (8/5): - We choose this property because it is close to the light rail, close to the Cruise Terminal and train from the Airport.
