- Zahra B. (4/5): Very uncomfortable bed, weak water pressure, and unhelpful and dismissive management - Structurally safe apartment, easy access to public transportation and shops. The bedroom had no window, resulting in poor ventilation. Water pressure was extremely weak. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, each spring could be felt as if they were poking through the cover; causing back and shoulder pain. Pillows were flat and unsupportive. The sofa and its mattress were also uncomfortable. Dishes were not properly cleaned before being stored. The AC was problematic: the remote initially did not work, and when we asked about it, the manager responded dismissively (“why would you want to use AC?”). We explained it was needed for ventilation due to the lack of a window. After replacing batteries, the unit still functioned poorly, and the filters were heavily clogged with dirt and what appeared to be mold, making it ineffective and concerning from a health perspective. Cleanliness was also an issue—there was visible dust and even hair on the floors upon arrival. Despite this, the property enforces a €30 cleaning fee, which felt unreasonable given the condition of the apartment and discouraged us from requesting cleaning during a long stay. Only three toilet paper rolls and three trash bags were provided for over two weeks for two adults, and requests for refills were refused, giving the impression that basic necessities were being withheld to push guests toward paying the cleaning fee. Requests for fresh bed sheets were also declined. Management was consistently unhelpful and dismissive, which made it difficult to address even reasonable concerns during the stay.

- Mary (10/5): - The apartment is located on a quiet street and is equipped with everything we need for a short stay. The photos match the reality. Aytac the host was very kind and hospitable, we enjoyed our stay greatly!
- sezen (8/5): Convenient stay in historic Balat with many attractions, restaurants, cafes and public transportation hubs. - Location is very good. It’s in a quiet street, yet within 5 minutes walking you have mini markets, restaurants, bakeries, bus, tram and ferry. It’s in a historical neighborhood with many things to see and visit. You can take the tram and be within 30min in Sultanahmet. You can take the ferry and again be within 30min in Kadikoy, or other districts as Karakoy and Beyoglu. The kitchen had a proper working stove and kettle. There was a fridge with small freezer unit. There was heating also an airconditioning and tv, however I haven’t used those. Washing machine with laundry rack was available for long stays. There were some cleaning utilities to maintain the apartment. Easy self-checkin process. Overall very good stay. The sofa had stains also the bathroom could be a bit better maintained. The kitchen had scratched pans and pots. However I don’t blame this on the managers/hosts. The sofa issue is that many foreign tourists use shoes in the house. The host cannot renew the sofa every year, quite understandable. Same for the scratched pans and pots. Some guest just aren’t careful. For the price I paid I did not mind it. I bought my own kitchenware and used a plaid for over the sofa. Bathroom can be cleaned a bit better, the cleaning lady is not very careful. I am sure if I had mentioned to the host, they would send cleaning, however I didn’t want to bother. Also I would like to strongly point out that the things I mentioned above are within expectations of the rate I paid.

(5/5): Management came across as rigid and transactional, with little willingness to accommodate basic need - The apartment layout was functional, and the structure felt solid and secure, neighbourhood was nice. The sofa was in very poor condition, with a torn mattress and a loose cover exposing the rubber underneath, making it uncomfortable to use. The bathroom ventilation was broken (with a note asking guests to leave the door open after showering), and the shower drain was nearly clogged. The AC remote was missing. Towels were old and unpleasant, and cookware was heavily worn and did not feel safe to use. Bathroom lighting was partially broken, make it very dim. Management’s attitude significantly affected the experience. Only three toilet paper rolls and three trash bags were provided for over two weeks for two adults, and requests for refills were refused. This gave the impression that basic necessities were being withheld to push guests toward paying the cleaning fee. Requests for fresh bed sheets were also declined. - Rachel (6/5): - Le quartier est vivant et très agréable, proche des transports pour visiter la ville . L'appartement est vraiment très petit pour 4, et pas équipé pour manger a 4 ( deux couteaux, deux chaises, une table toute petite...). Le clic clac n'est pas très confortable, difficile à déplacer et lorsqu'il est déplié on n'a plus accès à grand chose.

- Saveliy (10/5): Perfect gateway in the old Balat - Perfect location in old city - Balat. A lot of restaurants and grocery shops nearby, so you can be sure that you will find something to eat and drink. Just a short tram ride away are the main sight seeing places

- Iraima (7/5): Average - The property was very clean Very old, low quality linen, tiny uncomfortable sofa. The lights in the stairs has a very delayed timer so you are often walking in the dark
- Kami (6/5): Comfortable for a short stay, but not ideal for families or longer visits. - The location was excellent, right in the heart of Balat, making it very convenient to explore the historic side of Istanbul. The self check-in process was smooth, with the keys stored in a locked container in front of the door, which was a new and interesting experience for us. The room design was also very nice and thoughtfully done. Additionally, there was a small electrical issue when we arrived, but it was fixed very quickly, which we really appreciated. The floor is old, and some parts were damaged, which could be a safety concern. It also creaks a lot, especially at night, which can be disturbing when a child is asleep. The couch bed was uncomfortable, almost feeling like lying on the floor. We had reserved a room based on the photos on Booking, expecting it to be on the 2nd floor, but we were given a room on the 3rd floor. With very narrow stairs, it was difficult to carry heavy suitcases up there. The room lighting was dim, which we are not used to, although a small battery-powered light helped a little. The room was reserved for 3 people, but there were only 2 chairs at the table, which was not very practical. Overall, the apartment is fine for a short stay, but since we were planning a longer stay, we decided to move to a more convenient apartment. - Ellie (8/5): Lovely private studio - Lovely little studio on a quiet road in a great neibourhood. It felt so private being on the top floor and not overlooked by neighbours. Having the balcony was such a plus as it was shaded in the hot afternoon. The balcony patio was very dusty and the we the many stairs were tiring after lots of wandering around Istanbul but overall I would recommend it.
- Bruni (6/5): Pleasant - The location was great in the middle of Balat and so closed to many amenities, a bus stop and the tram. The flat wasn't great. There was paint that was chipping off the ceiling and that landed on the cooker. However the owner let us have another flat and although this also had its own issues (e.g. a broken cupboard) it was much better than the previous one in the sense that at least we could cook and use the cooker without the risk of food being contaminated with paint. I have to say that the owner did what he could to accommodate our needs. However, I don't think the flat was worth all the money we paid for a week

- Mikhail (8/5): beautiful and cozy place to stay for a family break - It was a great place to feel the essence of colorful Istanbul - with a lot of traditions, religions, cultures and history behind. Easy to make breakfast yourself or choose a Turkish breakfast from one of the numerous eateries around. light in the kitchen/lounge could be a bit better, as well as water pressure in the shower :)

- Hamza (9/5): Cozy little apartment in a rustic neighborhood, perfect for couples and solo stays - Excellent location, good access to public transportation and amenities like groceries and dining. Historical neighborhood, if a little run down. The host was friendly and responsive to all of our requests, and kept sure the apartment was cleaned regularly every week. Most facilities needed for extended stay were available. The only major negative was the comfort of the bed. The frame was not sturdy and the quality of the mattress was below average. While fine for maybe 1-2 nights, it wasn't adequate for long stays. Other minor points would be the lack of a microwave oven and the location of the air conditioner, which would probably be more effective in the bedroom.
- Antonio (5/5): Passable - I do not recommend. This place looks great online but the reality is it fell below expectations a standards at every level. First, the entire apartment is tiny. There is barely space for 2 people. It should be advertised as a studio rather than a 1-bedroom. The bedroom is small, that you have to walk sideways to get around. To make matters worse, a lot of things broke down during our stay. The shower broke and they replaced it with a plastic one that was insufficient to withstand hot water. The flooring came apart. Lastly, the sofa was absolutely horrific. It so old and low quality, with no cushioning, the middle was caving down. At any moment, it will fall apart I’m sure. Had I known all these beforehand, I would never have booked. The only good thing about the apartment was air conditioning. Look elsewhere if you want to stay comfortably in Istanbul.

- Sadan (5/5): Passable - The images you see on the website are old. The apartment inside and outside was not well maintained. The apartment inside was not well maintained. Kitchen pots and pan were old and filthy. The air-conditioning is old and makes a loud racket when switched on. The mattress was not comfortable, and you could feel the mattress springs as you ran your hand over it. Which resulted in a sore body every morning. The bathroom was not throughly cleaned. We found a random sock behind the washing machine. The amount of stairs was ridiculous, and we had no help with carrying our luggage up at all. The stairs are also a safety hazard to older people.

- Stephen (9/5): great way to experience "real" istanbul life - It's a great way to experience living like a local, in probably one of the last remaining untouched communities in central Istanbul. There is vibrant street life, interesting shops, cafes, and restaurants aside form basic neighbourhood shops. Best of all, the tram station was nearby to get into other parts of the city.
- Summaya (9/5): Our stay was lovely, we were comfortable and very happy with the apartment and value for money. - The apartment was beautiful, provided that authentic feel, stunning views of the city. We used google maps and it took a couple wrong turns to find the property, eventually had to ask a lady walking on the street. Upon check in we had assistance with our luggage, at checkout we had to struggle down very steep, narrow stairs with our luggage.

In all this places are normal prices. Is close to buses and to tram. In the appartment there is washing machine, fridge, hair dryer. Its a budget very nice place. Everything was fine

The owners put together a comprehensive guide to the area, using public transport, using the apartment facilities (washing machine etc) and even some recommendations for local hammami. They were also gracious enough to store our backpacks the day we checked out.

- Maria (3/5): The owners were friendly seamed very helpful but at the end the issues weren’t addressed properly!!! - We liked the location, its a very friendly neighborhood with mostly locals, you don’t have too many tourists, the hotel is situated in between local apartments, in the night it can feel a bit gloomy but in the daytime it really lives up. There are lot of lovely and friendly stray animals roaming in the streets which is hard to watch for a animal lover. Lovely food places with amazing börek and a really high quality coffee shop and best to eat hot meals where the locals eat i suggest not to eat at tourist spots!! Overpriced and not really great tasting food. You can get easily to transportation or walk. Lots of vintage antique shops which i loved. A Turkish fresh food weekly market is also close by and again the locals are super sweet. The hotel looks very lovely from the outside, beautiful colors and detail and seams very inviting. It seams like the only hotel in the area, its in the middle of local apartments. The apartment is smaller then it looks in the pictures die to how the pictures were taking but that’s not the real issue. At the end i want a place where i can rest and rejuvenate and sleep in comfort. Unfortunatly that was not the case, i contacted the owners which were very great in communicating i Must say that was very pleasing, they were really helpful in the moment when i addressed the hygiene of the apartment 1-2 nights later because The pillows, mattress covers, blankets and even the pillow cases, fitted sheets and towels had lots of stains, which is simply unexaptable! I covered myself and my child with my dresses. Though the friendly houskeeper came right away and replaced the pillows and sheets, the mattress cover was taking off the mattress covers to have it cleaned but we didn’t receive it back until two days before our stay ended also the covers blanket which was also supposed to be replaced the very next day. The walls in the bedroom are also stained and have a huge water stain across the ceiling and are stained through out. Also the bedframe missed some wood so it felt like you were falling through when we were laying on the naked foam(without the protective mattress covers)i was told that the apartment gets painted and a new mattress will be bought but unfortunately too late for our stay, we bit into the sour apple. I was offered to leave and get a refund for the remaining days but that was not possible to manage so i had asked for a discount possibly but i was told that i had my child with me which was older(13 years old)and that this was costing more and that was my discount when that specific apartment was specifically for 3 people and i rented it for the people.Also they lived next door which i didn’t know and was surprised ,they should know the condition of the apt!
- Mme.olivier (8/5): Beautiful Balat, we loved to start and finish our days in this colorful district! - We were very happy to be able to discover Istanbul from Elele! The staff is lovely and very helpful, they are always there to guide you. They also offered to book a taxi from the airport - very nice and easy solution to arrive. The apartment was little and simple, but clean and nice. We appreciated folkloric decoration and the district: authentic and vibrant with colors and people! It is quite easy to go to the center by bus, and you will surely appreciate a wide choice of restaurants and coffees in the area! Our apartment was on the 1st floor, which turned out to be a little bit dark and humid. If I knew, I would choose an apartment on a higher floor or on the last one, with a balcony. But still, everything was clean and nice, so it was not a big problem.
- Sergey (5/5): An overpriced apartment run by arrogant people. - 1. No registration desk and the entrance door is normally closed. I arrived exactly as promised, ringing a bell didn’t help much, so I had to call the property and to ask them to finally come and pass me the keys. 2. The property is near Balat tourist area but in a more or less quiet place. You can purchase food in a101, Bim and Sok and fruits across the street from Bim, but that’s mostly it: for anything else decent (baklava, currency exchanges, repairs, doctors etc) you’ll have to walk uphill to downtown 20-40 min depending on what you need. 3. When I arrived, I got room #5. Everything was extremely small there and the only lamp in the living room was hanging so low, that I crashed into it each time I went across those 3 meters. Also, bidet didn’t work on the toilet. It was late already so I prepared some food and measured the apartment with a measuring tape: I booked it for myself and my gf and both of us work online and have to converse with other people, so I expected to get a 40 sq m 2-room apartment. Instead, an apartment #5 was exactly 33% less: 26.7 sq m. A living room + kitchen were 13.2 sq m, a bedroom + bathroom + hall were 13.5 sq m, inner walls included. I couldn’t sleep so instead I double checked my measurements and sent a message to Booking.com. As always, an illiterate rep of local Booking.com team mixed everything up and told me that a 13.5 sq m apartment is not what they expected and they would pass my complaint to the owner. Some guy came around 8-9am in the morning and was very much surprised about my complaint. I had to explain to him that Booking.com hired reps from the ads in the street and they couldn’t read, but an apartment was in fact 33% less than advertised. The guy said it wasn’t true and all their apartments were around 36-40 sq m. I offered to him to measure it, but as many guys before him, he refused: in his eyes I saw that he didn’t have any idea even how to do that. Anyway I knew that I simply couldn’t stay there, so I told him that straight away. He offered me to check apartment #7, but I had to wait till check-out time to come and see. It turned out a bit bigger and better planned, with bigger sofa, with a 2nd table, with better AC and better washing machine. It was far from an ideal, but it was definitely better so I agreed to it, they prepped it for me and in some hrs I moved in. I also got a small foldable table for my laptop. I measured apt #7 and it was 28.7 sq m in total (inner walls included). 4. There are no separate bedrooms per se in these apartments: they just put a wall more or less in the middle of the room so a part with the windows to the street became a living room, and a part with no windows became a bedroom. A “bedroom” is small, if you close the door there will be no air by morning. Also, if you take showers and wash your things, the linen and the towels, humidity inside becomes very high, so you have to always keep the light in the bathroom on because it also switches on an extraction fan. All in all, you had to learn how to organize life there and it wasn’t all pleasant. 5. Check your sheets: they put a cheap waterproof mattress protector over a mattress right under the sheet and they could put it the wrong side up as was in my case so I was sleeping one night straight on PU. 6. Internet could stop working suddenly. Normally they have download speed around 15-25 Mbps and upload around 5-7 Mbps on “Level 3” connection. It doesn’t let you have video calls, but you could talk at least. “Level 4” connection is faster on download, but slower (4-5 Mbps) on upload. Still, sometimes, internet could stop working altogether on all connections and the property acknowledges nothing, they just reset their routers and talk to you as if it worked all the time. When it happens early in the morning, it could go on for hrs. So if you need stable internet buy a local sim card. 7. When they move furniture in an apt above, you’ll hear everything as if it happens inside your own skull.
