- Kaajal (10/5): Great room, location, staff! Perfect stay. - Lovely pub, very nice and spacious room, and the staff couldn't do enough to help. The breakfast was delicious (all made from locally sourced ingredients at The Buxton 2 mins up the road– the pastries are immense!), and the welcome drinks were a nice touch. The area is perfect, it's right on the edge of Shoreditch/Whitechapel and really close to transport links and lots of nice pubs and restaurants. Will definitely book next time I'm in London. Nothing! Wish I'd known this pub had rooms on previous visits to London!
- Clare (9/5): Friendly and warm welcome to a great location, comfy bed, clean room and pleasant atmosphere. - On arrival the staff are super polite and helpful. Rooms are clean and tidy, exactly as per the photos. Bed is comfy, but pillows a bit high for my liking. Room is spacious and well kitted out. Noise from road not as bad as I was expecting, pretty quiet really except for the occasional siren. Free drink on arrival was a great bonus as the pub downstairs was super cool and pleasant. Well stocked bar and good seating. Breakfast was included so made the stay cheaper, but didnt realise it was a 2 min walk away in other sister hotel. I would definitely come again. Worth mentioning to customers when booking that breakfast is not actually in the hotel but a couple mins walk away. Once there, I think we got the real end of what was left so was a bit limited. Staff there were great though. You give no hint at all that it is above a pub. Was not noisy at all but guess you dont want to put people off booking till too late.
- Sarah (8/5): Boutique Bolthole on Brick Lane - I liked the continental breakfast and I enjoyed the fact that there were plenty of vegan options. The beds were so comfortable and the pillows were perfect. Staff, as always, was lovely! The cleaners were a bit loud in the morning when we were trying to have a lie-in so we didn't love that. The hot chocolate served with breakfast was very bland...where was the chocolate?

- Sarah (9/5): An absolute gem - The rooms are very modern and comfortable with lots of thoughtful touches. Plenty of hot water in the shower and a good selection of hot drinks. Loved the linens on the bed! The room was a bit cool for my liking and the toilet lid slammed quite loudly. Also, I really miss the cooked breakfast they used to offer.
- Fiona (10/5): Recommend - Breakfast incredible.
Drink on arrival a lovely touch.
Room delightful.

- Edyta M (9/5): - Lokalizacja super, dach z widokiem na centrum, bardzo miły personel
- Connor (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): - The place was wicked , really friendly n safe, staff were helpful n happy .. loved the space .. great discount on drinks as a guest ..
Just was the old breakfast menu in the tools which you had at the sister hotel down the road .. was looking forwards to the full English but only continental available .. which to be fair was real nice .. just thought was worth a mention. .. would stay again for sure!
- Baroness (8/5): Very good -
- Benjamin (10/5): - Good
- Simon (8/5): Very good -
- Julie (3/5): shabby chic - more Shabby than chic and none of the promised facilities or services are available - breakfast wasn't available at all due to chefs illness. Also, the advertised terrace was closed, the promoted "welcome drink" didn't materialise any of the facilities advertised would have been acceptable the lack of all of them was just not fair given the cost
- Emma (7/5): Food and staff excellent, rooms are unique and clean. - Clean and staff were really friendly Noise from the bar music and the cleaner cleaning the stairs at 7:15am
- Philip (8/5): Lots of character, very clean and friendly. - The rooms were quirky and comfortable but also very clean. The staff are especially nice. Only improvement would be for them to serve breakfast on site. At the moment they have a kitchen and dining room but you have to walk down the street to another place for your breakfast.
- Laura (9/5): Superb city option, friendly staff and great added extras - Every staff member was helpful, friendly, personable and efficient. The value for money was outstanding and set them apart from competitors. The price of the room included a free round of drinks, breakfast and 10 % off food and drink throughout the stay, this really made it stand out, was an unexpected bonus and would definitely make us stay again. The venue itself was buzzing, cute, and perfect for a city break. The rooms are slightly different to what they look like in the pics. A little more basic, but not off putting. If you were a larger person staying in the room we were in, they may struggle in the en-suite and shower. We were fine but it would be tight!
- Kathleen (7/5): Short notice booking, great value for money and location - Great location, vibrant area within 5 minutes of old Spitalfields market with lot's of food and drink stalls. Had a Sunday lunch in the Culpepper, nice food but a little on the pricey side for wine choices. Agree with the other review about toilet seat - easily sorted with a catch to stop it from falling down. Bijou bathroom but good hot shower. Breakfast was nice in the sister pub The Buxton but they didn't have any sausages for the full English which was disappointing, awaiting delivery.
- Alisa (8/5): Overall great 👍 - Great place and the pub offers drink on arrival. The breakfast was great too!
Nice space, looks a bit better in the pictures but overall great value for the money! Comfy bed A bit noisy as pub downstairs goes on until 00:00. But if you have no issues with sleep, it’s doable. Light sleepers probably would want to avoid.
- Manon (8/5): Perfect for a short stay - Easy check-in, friendly staff and quiet room.
Welcome drink is a nice touch.
The location is great, and the room was perfect for 1 person (might be too small for 2 people). Breakfast was ok, but you have to go to a sister hotel that is located 200m. It's completely fine, but it's worth mentioning.
- Victoria (9/5): Just amazing and we loved the welcome drink - A great nights stay in the perfect location Nothing
- Patricia (7/5): Good -
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (6/5): Good location, quirky room, very tiny bathroom - Great location, nice breakfast at the Buxton, friendly staff at both hotels The bathroom was tiny, so tiny that the loo seat didn’t sit up and had to rest on your back whilst you peed! The air con from the kitchen below was quite noisy and the room was so hot, even with the radiator turned down that we slept with the window open meaning we heard a lot of street noise even though staff had kindly placed us in a quieter room
- Calum (8/5): Very good -
- Britt (8/5): Very nice and cosy accommodation on a prime location - The location, it was clean, nice staff, cosy bar downstairs If I would have to name one thing, that breakfast was somewhere else and that quite some things of the breakfast menu were not available. However the quality of the breakfast served was still very good.
- Stephen (10/5): - Simple but comfortable, a I’ve a great pub and nice restaurant… building has a roof top garden bar in the summer as well.
Close to Spitalfields market and Aldgate East station. Great location and fun neighborhood.
- Stefan (6/5): Good if you have no other options - At least the radiator heating worked well. Located on a noisy street with lots of traffic. The room was on the third floor. The two floors below are bar and dinner. You go through the bar, then stair up through the kitchen and then go to the room. All smell and noise form the kitchen and the bar go to the room in addition to the heavy traffic on the street.
I was for 4 nights. On two of them I asked to have dinner with them and they refused: First day "Sorry, we are fully booked", Second try "Sorry, we have a large party". And you have no space for one person? Not a big deal, there are other good options in the area, but is not good.
Very limited furniture in the room. The furniture is pretty old. All the feeling is of a not supported and not taking care about the property.
The breakfast is in another bar 150 meters away. You choose from a menu from 4-5 options. All of them are eggs in different variations.
- Jan Hojvang (8/5): The "real" London - With a central location in Whitecapel, the hotel is ideal for exploring London.
The hotel is located above a pub and a (fantastic) restaurant and that is the main business. Therefore, it is necessary to enter the hotel yourself with a code before 12 noon.
The hotel is located in an old building so expect worn stairs, patina, slightly crooked floors, etc.
The rooms are nice and original. For example, we had a fireplace (that was bricked up) in our room. Charming.
So if you don't want a standard hotel with nice straight hallways and chrome and glass, then the Culpeper is the hotel for you.
In my opinion, we are 3-4 stars.
Would I book Culpeper again? Yes, definitely.
- Aylin (1/5): The worst hotel experience of my life - The hotel was a nightmare. After the pub closed, I was locked out with no clear instructions on re-entry. A code was sent via email, but this unusual system wasn’t explained at check-in or posted onsite. There should be signs in the room, inside and outside the hotel stating what needs to be done. I was left cold and stranded. I demand a full refund for this poorly managed experience.
- Mark (8/5): Great rooms, Great food and Great location - I loved this accommodation, just up my street. Clean and fun rooms with all facilities that required. The food was delicious! Although the room and bathroom were great, the lavatory was a disaster! There is a ledge above the loo that makes the loo seat not open flush to the wall. When using the loo the seat rests on your back. Fine. Stand up and you cannot logistically do your business and stop the seat from closing. It just makes the whole lavatory experience more complicated than it needs to be.
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional - Really comfortable room, with super helpful staff. N/A
- Emma (7/5): Good -
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Alexander (10/5): A delightful stay with friendly staff, a charming room, and a superb breakfast experience. - We had a wonderful one-night stay at The Culpeper Bedrooms in London. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. Our room was beautifully presented—clean, comfortable, and full of character. A highlight was the included breakfast at the nearby Buxton Hotel, which was absolutely superb. The quality and variety exceeded our expectations. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.
- Seana (5/5): Passable -
- Reece (10/5): Brilliant room, would 100% come again. - - Beautiful apartment for the price.
- Free drink on arrival & free breakfast at The Buxton
- Lovely location One member of staff forgot to mention to the kitchen staff that I didn't want XYZ with my meal (and it was a very simple meal). They also seemed like they didn't want to be there.
Weird BO smell in the bathroom, I imagine this may have been mold or something as there's next to no ventilation.
- Marie (9/5): Superb -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Adam (8/5): - The pub/hotel was easy to find. The food looked great, although I didn't eat. The rooms were up two flights of stairs, wasn't too challenging. The room was nice enough, very clean and full of character.
The biggest drawback was due to the very central location in London was the traffic noise. At times it was deafening, I struggled to sleep due to it. Unfortunately a massive drawback but otherwise a lovely pleasant stay. They really need to invest in soundproofing
- Justin (9/5): Rooms are small, but very comfortable - Good breakfast. Welcome drink is a nice touch. Roof top garden.
- Anke (10/5): Great getaway in a vibrant environment - Friendly staff, above bar and restaurant, good speaker, cosy decoration, lovely vibe, welcome drink, good breakfast The bed was maybe a little small and a little hot in the room.
- Sharon (2/5): - Whilst this property looks appealling in the Times photos, the current reality is very different. I arrived at the property and was shown to a room where I was immediately hit by a musty, humid smell. Despite trying to air the room the stale air permeated. The pictures on the website also did not reflect the rough finish with small hole in the corners of the room. The bedding did not look clean when I arrived and I certainly did not feel inclined to sit on the bed or the dinghy and discoloured chair covering. The pictures on the website, which were clearly taken when the rooms were freshly decorated, do not represent the current tired look of the room I was shown. The response from the property owners is that I should expect some wear and tear and the property is described as rustic. There is rustic and there is downright shabby, neglected and in need of a complete refresh.
- Tom (9/5): It was great - Breakfast at the Buxton was great. Room was lovely. Great luck for Shoreditch and the city Fan in the room was dusty - only complaint
- Thomas (8/5): Very good -
- Elizabeth (6/5): - .
- John (10/5): - Unique querky little hotel. Clean well managed. Breakfast just down the road in sister hotel was clean freshly cooked
- Claudine (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (9/5): Superb - Honestly the most comfortable bed
- Anita (10/5): Very cool - Very cool Urban stile
Loved the drink on the house on arrivel!!
Rooftop just opened…. So pretty w view over the City The bed could be bigger
- Luke (8/5): Very good -
- Jamie (8/5): Very good -
- Okosi (10/5): honestly best stay and worth the money lovely staff great location and very welcoming - I love the interior of the room very unique and stylish nothing was a perfect stay wouldn’t fault
- Kyoko (10/5): Exceptional - very near from tube statio.
friendly staff.
spacious for the price in london.
- Louise (10/5): Great stay, would definitely come back - The staff were really friendly and the room was as advertised, clean and comfy. Breakfast was a few minutes walk around the corner and very tasty with good quality food. The free glass of wine and pieces of cake on arrival was a lovely touch. We didn’t receive the details of our stay e.g. Wi-Fi code, breakfast location, door code until the day after we checked out. This would have made our stay much simpler if we received them before as presumably intended!
- Karina (10/5): Excellent pub hotel - I'm really happy I found the Culpeper, much nicer place to stay for the same price (or lower) than a cheap chain hotel. Well located for central London, just a few minutes walk from East Aldgate tube. It's really just a few rooms above the pub, but the rooms are comfy, with much more character than the many overpriced places I've stayed in London. Comfy bed, nice shower, WiFi is good. All I need for a 1 night stay on business. Breakfast is served in a sister pub about 5 minutes walk away. Nice food and really friendly service. I'll certainly recommend.
- Celina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Biju (7/5): Good -
- Fiona (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (9/5): Ideal bolthole for a London visit . - Loved the room and location. Brilliant for the centre of London etc. It was spotlessly clean and the staff were excellent in every aspect at the Culpepper . The only negative was a member of staff at the sister hotel ( where the good breakfast was served) who quite clearly didn't want to be there . Oh ! The sourdough toast was inedible = rock solid ! The breakfast otherwise was good .
- Raphaela (7/5): Had everything we needed and would be happy to return. - Breakfast was very good. Dinner was delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful. Its a great location, perfect for Brick Lane. The Bed was way too small for a couple.
- Adam (10/5): The Culpeper is a great spot to stay in a historic pub with many amenities nearby - My wife & I had a great two nights at the Culpeper. It was really cool to stay above a lively pub and restaurant. The rooms are on the 3rd floor and they were surprisingly quiet for how buzzy the pub and restaurant were down below. The location was great. It’s an easy few minutes walk to the East Aldgate tube station. And the surrounding area has endless options for eating and going out. The included breakfast was tasty and made to order at their sister hotel a short few blocks a way. The staff were all friendly and welcoming even though they were always busy. We like having the coffee and tea supplies in the room. It was mildly annoying to have to leave the hotel to go out and get breakfast down the street but not a big deal. The key in the door was a bit finicky and took some getting used to.
- Andre (9/5): Superb -
- James (9/5): amazing - loved everything, great location, great staff and the experience was amazing the beer is a bit pants in the pub
- Matt (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christine (9/5): Superb - Fantastically friendly staff
Great breakfast
Clean
Nice details in the room such as little flapjacks
The windows actually open! We were a bit anxious in case the keypad didn’t work late at night so an emergency number would have been helpful
- Giulia (10/5): Great location, cozy and clean bedroom, amazing breakfast and the nicest staff 🩷 -
- Madeleine (10/5): Lovely staff, lovely place, lovely food and drink - Excellent atmosphere in the bar, the room was well decorated with great amenities and there was so many nice little touches. The breakfast was great and accommodating, the free welcome drink in the bar was a nice addition and the staff were super friendly.
- Pete (9/5): Excellent location and rooms - I have stayed here before and would again. - Breakfast was in a sister Hotel a 2 minnute walk away. Breakfast there was superb and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Some coffee in the room.
- Armstrong (7/5): Adequate - Thé towels were good and the shower. Main light dim. Noise from the roads. Room walls need painted. Nespresso machine not working. Didn’t get breakfast day I left as too early.
- Angela (4/5): Disappointing - Location, staff, pub, chips Room needed updating. Bathroom shabby. Poor layout of toilet (seat wouldn’t stay up due to shelf)
- Timothy (10/5): Wonderful stay - We stayed here for one night but wish it could have been longer there’s a great bar downstairs and an excellent restaurant on the first floor the bedrooms are really great and the whole building is shabby chic everyone that worked there was very friendly and the wonderful breakfast is a minutes walk to a sister building
- Sarah (8/5): Very good -
- Karen (9/5): Would recommend. Will be back. Oasis in the middle of London. - Decor was amazing.
Staff were exceptional. Went the extra mile.
Christmas tree was put up. I am a sucker for Christmas. Toilet seat needs adjustment.
Heater in room needs looking at.
Wi-Fi code should be printed in room.
- Anonymous (10/5): Brilliant- great staff, great location and great value for money - It’s quirkiness, it’s decoration and cleanliness Nothing
- Matt (9/5): Superb - Very obvious breakfast is made fresh by chefs. Always a big positive of staying here ! Previous visit included little jar of homemade cookies in my room but there were not any this time. Was a nice surprise so only highlighting in jest. No real complaints from me.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Check in was fine, called and messaged to ensure room was clean, because it was a bday celebration, lots of stray hair on bed and throw(on bed) otherwise clean. Good breakfast and terrace bar. Check out was horrible, seems like there is no one person in charge, two girls who had 0 hospitality experience were rude, declined requests to honour a checkout at 12 pm, fine but then act completely pathetic after I hand over the keys, keeps staring at me while I sit in the pub downstairs and check emails, do not thank me for my stay, has a rude and condescending demeanour as if I was paid to stay at their hotel! the entire time. Really off putting the two women were - they need a degree in hospitality and relevant experience.
- Rachel (9/5): Great spot for a central stay with all the home comforts! - Lovely decor, very clean, good amenities and tasty breakfast! The check in wasn’t obvious and unstaffed so we had to first interrupt a staff meeting to drop our bags of and then ask at the bar where check in was. There was also no one at breakfast the next morning so the chef was doing all the work and didn’t know where things were so was a bit rushed off his feet (but did a great job)! Staffing just seemed a bit all over.
- Elena (10/5): Amazing time in London - Location is amazing, staff are professional and friendly, tasty breakfast, comfortable and clean room. We really enjoyed our staying there. No minuses
- Matthew (10/5): - Great atmosphere, quirky
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were beyond anything I've seen recently. They were ready to help and made sure to do everything to help with our stay, up for a chat about what we were doing (travellers from Australia) and seemed to genuine care about us as people, not customers.
The vibe and decor of the pub, restaurant, room and rooftop garden was fantastic and the breakfast was a great start to the day. Could not recommend mor.
Thank you for having us!
- Nicholas (5/5): Nice place to stay but sadly let down by the plumbing in this occasion - Lively bar and lovely room Lovely room but shower wouldn’t work so had to do a basin wash in the morning
- Marisol (7/5): Good -
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Skidmore (7/5): Quirky central location - Room is surprisingly quiet considering it's above the restaurant, it is a bit strange that people have to walk past your room to get to the roof garden.
Breakfast was lovely, scrambled egg on toast with a side of bacon.
Bed was very comfortable with nice fluffy pillows.
Ironing board and iron available on request which is useful. The room was clean on first glance but really could do with a proper clean of skirting boards and radiators etc as dirty and dusty. Also my bin had not been emptied from previous guest.
Check in was OK, I was advised by the bar staff to go upstairs and then I waited for the manager for approx 5 mins. I wasn't offered a welcome drink as other reviews mention.
There is a private entrance with a coded door that you can use so you don't have to walk through the pub which is good, only issue is that at the top of the stairs it's full of boxes and kitchen rubbish. Feels like you are stepping into the kitchen and shouldn't be there.
- Añdrew (5/5): Passable - Room Breakfast menu plus not ready at 730 staff no gd in morning
- Camille (6/5): Pleasant -
- Jack (8/5): Very good - Great decor, and lovely breakfast. Out of hours access was a bit crowded, due to kitchen deliveries / equipment being on the landing of the staircase.
- Stuart (6/5): it’s okay if there is nothing else locally - the location was ideal given my final destination was only 70m away its very average accommodation, the pub is great as is the food but that’s it,
the rooms are on the 2nd floor and the stairs are narrow and greasy, probably due to passing the kitchen each time.
basic and functional !!
- Steve (9/5): Superb -
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Veronika (8/5): Very good - The place is awesome with very nice atmosphere. The location is really great, the pub and the restaurant in the same house is huge advantage. I even got a free welcome drink in the pub! Overall the room has a good vibe. The only minus was the bathroom - the water pressure in the shower was bad and fluctuated constantly. On the first day, there was almost no hot water and water splashed in streams. Fortunately, it was better on the second day. There was also only a small electric heating in the room, but in the end the room warmed up quickly, so it was not a problem. Otherwise, everything was great and I would be happy to come back again.
- Pete (8/5): Excellent service, facilities and comfort. - good breakfast, cooked with kitchen in sight, nice fresh ingredients. Room, very spacious, comfortable and with good facilities. Even though this is above a pub it doesn't affect the experience of the stay in fact it probably enhances it A bit more variety of breakfast choice for a coeliac.
- Rebeka (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (3/5): Poor -
- Amanda (10/5): excellent if you are wanting a boutique style hotel and an east London location - The bed was really comfortable and the tea and coffee in the room were great. The attractive bathroom was well stocked with nice shampoo and wash solutions. Breakfast was excellent too and the pub has a great atmosphere.
