Guest Reviews
- Ermal (1/5): - Nothing Staff
- Reinhard (10/5): - A beautifully restored Kulla in pretty, peaceful natural surroundings with a great garden. The owner and staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was great.
- Eric (10/5): - Amazing accomodation at the end of a winding road with a crystal clear mountain spring, fresh fruit and delicious food. The tower and the rooms in it are worth the trip by itself. Owner and staff were very generous to us. The beds were comfy, the linen smelled amazing. For the duration of our stay a woman was making thana compote over the fire. Just a great experience
- Guest (9/5): - I liked everything, it was a very beautiful place. The food, nature and staff are very good. The road was very narrow and bad. We had to go back almost 300 m, because two cars could not pass on the road.

- Václav (10/5): - This place is truly an experience. You don't have to worry about the driveway - Ford Cmax no problem. The place is truly beautiful and it's a piece of countryside in the middle of beautiful mountains, moments of peace and coexistence with the local nature and local people. Food and drink, from the owners from local ingredients from the garden, absolutely perfect. We spent 2.5 days here on our way across Albania and it was a good choice. Even though the rooms are not very big, it fully compensates for the feeling that I live in a kulla - a historical building beautifully renovated. And you won't want to spend much time in the room, because it will take you out to the beautiful and spacious garden, where you can enjoy the place.
- Eljan (10/5): Eccezionale - Ottima esperienza, sicuramente da fare e rifare! Immersi nella natura con cibo a km zero e ottimo il servizio e l’accoglienza!
- Stelina (10/5): - Staff gentilissimo e disponibile. Struttura magnifica.

- Joris (8/5): Ultimate authentic experience (not your traditional guesthouse) - Its incredible heritage, fantastic location and delightful fresh cooking was a delight Come here for the experience, not the comfort: bonfire is great, but the windows are makeshift and let the smoke into our bedroom.
Communication wasn’t as fluid as elsewhere. Eg: there was a party at the location, keeping us up for a good while.
- Maria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dave (8/5): Very good -
- Karen (10/5): Lovely experience in a wonderful location - We absolutely loved our stay at this wonderful location. The accommodation was rustic but comfortable and so unique. The food was home cooked and delicious. Eating breakfast and dinner in such a peaceful and beautiful setting was delightful. Highly recommend!
- Robyn (7/5): It was good. - Great place and lovely feeling to it. The food was excellent. You can only pay in cash.
- Colin (4/5): Disappointing to say the least - The setting is lovely
The breakfast is lovely The property is lovely but it doesn’t offer any basic facilities in the rooms. There wasn’t a mirror in the bedroom and the mirror in the bathroom is tiny and doesn’t stay in position so unless you were eight feet tall you can’t see anything. The rooms are fine I am sure in the summer but early season the nights get very cold and there isn’t any heating. We were booked in for five days and were moved after day two to a different room this room cannot be described as a double room there is barely room to walk down the side of the bed. This room didn’t even have a mirror in the bathroom. The toilet seat wasn’t attached and there was no hot water to the wash basin. There isn’t anywhere to hang clothes so you are living out of a suitcase. Again no heating. We left the hotel after one night in the new room as not having hot water a mirror heating and having to sleep with socks on is a bit too much.
- Fabjol (8/5): Nice experience, several improvements to observe - Direct contact with property owner, kind welcome. The offroad path that leads to the property, the noisy bricolage works at 8PM (after a long trip that’s the last thing you want to deal with when you deliberately book a quite place instead of an ordinary hotel).
Bed sheets were clean but with several stains. On social media they’d advertise 40 EUR / night with dinner and breakfast included. I was charged extra for dinner, while I didn’t consume breakfast as I left early. Not a big deal, and certainly not a matter of money, but as an Albanian, it leaves you that bitter taste.
It’s a pity they didn’t opt for indirect or diffused lighting, the lamp in the middle of the room was not optimal.
Overall a nice experience, with kind and helpful staff, few improvements to get me there again and rate it with 9/10 or 10/10.
- Malbora (8/5): Very good -
- Björn (10/5): Exceptional - Great food, grear scenery, very nice and welcoming staff. I'd recomend anyone that wants to experience the Albanian countryside to go here.
- Ober (7/5): We recommend to verify with Mr. Hupi the exact arrangements of your stay prior to coming. - The location, the concept of the Kulla in general, the efforts of Mr. Hupi to cater to everyone s needs. We got a free room upgrade and our puppy was welcome. We were there during a nearby wedding. The place was quite busy and we did not feel like we would be able to rest.
- Michal (10/5): Amazing experience, but not that easy to get to. - Absolutely amazing experience. The house is unique and the surroundings stunning. The host was super nice and helped us find the way via a video call. Delicious breakfast. Be careful when getting there, Google and Apple Maps can be misleading. We go lost a bit and had to call the host for directions.
- Joldert (4/5): Gun room very disappointing - We stayed in the gun room. Location is great and the owners take great pride in preserving the family heritage. The gun room was very disappointing. It was just about 8 m2 (not 20 m2) with only the bed. The bathroom was not private and very small. The worst was the open ceiling connected to the shared living room. No privacy at all. It felt we were sleeping in a dorm. We felt very misinformed by the advert.
- Kieran (10/5): The highlight of our Albanian trip! - We absolutely loved our stay here. Everything was just beautiful and we were made to feel very welcome.
- Bård (10/5): Definately a place to come back to. - Kulla Hupi offers a glimpse into albanian rural culture with its location out in the quiet countryside. The host is a very forthcoming guy who happily will tell you about the history of this special type of traditional house, the village and the locally produced food that is being served. He really cares about his guests and he is passionate about giving his guests the best service. The house has a most beautiful garden with all kinds of food growing in neat rows, cats and dogs sleeping here and there, freshly prepared traditional meals made with ingredients from the house garden and the neighbours. The inside of the house has a very special ambience with its traditional rooms and decorations. Due to its traditional construction the rooms are not soundproof, but that is how it is in this type of house and not something one should expect either. The room I stayed in had a big bed with a matress so nice and soft that it will make you sleep long after a big dinner in the evening. The garden has a stream running through it with chairs placed into the stream itself. Perfect for cooling your feet in the cool clear water while enjoying a cold beer. I highly recommend a stay at Kulla Hupi.
- Maaike (9/5): Wonderful experience! - We were impressed with Kulla Hupi! The historical building has been renovated with a great eye for detail, and the location is amazing! It's close to the main road, but it feels very remote. Diinner and breakfast, served in the yard, were traditional and delicious. Highly recommended! Be aware that the ''twin room" actually is a double room (the pictures are accurate).
- Victoria (9/5): Beautiful, historic property with a wonderful family - What a gorgeous property and how much history in some square meters!! It's soooo beautiful and rich! We loved the place. It's in a small village in the East of Albania, where there is not much to do apart from walks, some hikes and the peacefulness of the place. It's very rural and has a really quiet vibe. The house is incredibly beautiful and nicely decorated, there's a surrounding orchard and an enclosure with animals. All produces you eat come from the garden so it's all very fresh and tasty.
Every room is totally different so keep an eye on what you book and make sure you choose what you saw in the picture :)
The family who runs it are absolutely incredible, kind and lovely! We loved the place, but the experience would have been a total 10 with small changes:
As there's no AC (it's an old property and it's understandable) a fan could help, or at least a mosquito net with the door, so that you can open the window/door and get some fresh air, otherwise it gets really hot and we had some trouble sleeping well.
The produce is fabulous, all very tasty and yummy. I would work on small details for the better experience. The burek, for instance, was cold and it tastes sooooo much better when hot, so we felt it was a pity, At breakfast, they bring some tomatoes, cucumber, but they didn't come with a bit of oil or bread, so they were yummy but it felt like something was missing (there was also cheese, but a bit of dressing or/and bread would have made it amazing)
Those two were the major areas that we saw could be improved. Overall we loved it and enjoyed it, but it would have been a complete joy with those two additions.
Thanks for your fabulous hospitality!!
- Friedrich (10/5): A crazy nice location with very friendly hosts - It's a very uncommon hotel with very nice interior. Everything so lovely! Food was very nice too. They mixed up our bill with other peoples order. Still very ok, but a little bit annoying.
- Jasper (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly and helpful family in a beautiful Kulla with great food!
- Lissa (9/5): Fantastic experience. - This is a incredible unique place and would be a lovely base for hikers, cyclists, remote workers, young families etc. who want to explore the surrounding nature and mountains and/or relax in the wonderful shady garden. The hosts are very friendly and grow their own food (it's a family affair!), they provide a wonderful breakfast which you can enjoy at one of the many cosy corners in the garden. There is a firepit as well. The house is amazing, the view from the terrace of my room was absolutely incredible. If I could, I would have stayed much longer than one night.
- Maja (9/5): Superb - The Location is absolutely stunning, the sound of the nearby mountain river and the lush green. The owner is trying very hard to make things work well. The double room with private bathroom is extremely small, should rather be a single room.
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful Experience. Looking forward to going back. - Exceptional Albanian hospitality. Being in nature and especially hearing the sound of running water was a welcome blessing. Great farm fresh breakfast in the morning. We need to spend more time there!
- Nerjola (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nertila (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional - Hospitality
- Tracy (8/5): Lovely historic building and hosts, and fantastic meals! - A really unique stay in a very interesting renovated 200 year old fortified tower house. It has a nice leafy location in the small village of Fushe-Bulqiza. They have a large parking lot for your car which was really nice. We were warmly welcomed by our hosts and shown to our room. We were put into the “gun room”, the part of the tower used to defend the premises, complete with gun ports all around. Really a neat little room, and I do mean little, as the room itself was barely bigger than the bed! Also the ceiling area is open to the adjacent living area so virtually no sound privacy which we didn’t care much for. Also, there is one small shared bathroom for all the house guests, and again, not much sound privacy in there. The inside of the old house is amazing – stone walls, old wooden roof beams, and lots of old relics of centuries gone by – nice renovation job. The grounds are beautiful as well with nice gardens, outdoor museum, and nice, relaxing sitting areas. The food was a real high point, with wholesome, traditional meals, served on a common table in the dining room. There were 3 other lovely couples staying while we were there and we had some great conversations and made some friends.
Now, on the negative side, just so you know what you’re in for: you will have virtually no privacy, even in your room, the sound carries right in through the open ceiling or open stairway. During our stay, there were 4 young children running around the small living area of the house, screaming and crying, resulting in everyone talking loudly so that they could be heard. It was very uncomfortable and we did not enjoy it. People staying up late talking kept us awake, children crying and making noise in the early hours woke us up, and people using the toilet (right next to our room) woke us up during the night. I’m not trying to be critical, I just want people to know what the reality is. If this sounds like your thing, then this will be a wonderful experience! As listed above.
- Robin (10/5): Complete rest and delight. - Everyone here was super kind and helpful. The food was absolutely fantastic, all local, Much travelling no more than about 20 metres. The location is gorgeous and peaceful. We were thrilled with our stay. A few toiletries would have been helpful, but wasn't a big deal.
- Emma (7/5): Fabulous place but allocation of rooms by the Owner needs more careful management - This is a wonderful building in a beautiful, peaceful location and it’s run by a lovely team. Our dinner was excellent. Our bedroom was very small (the old Gunroom) and our bed was extremely uncomfortable. The other guests eating dinner directly outside our room meant we had very little privacy.
We changed our booking from 2 nights to 1 night a few days before we arrived. This request was not met with any objection from the owner but it may have meant we were switched, quite understandably, to a different room.
This is a well restored, old building and I fully understand that, that means the accommodation won’t be like a modern hotel but I’d liked to have been told about the room before we arrived to allow us to make a choice about whether we continued with our stay.
- Katarzyna (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely place in a countryside, perfectly renovated tower with beautiful garden and animals, great dinner and breakfast. -
- Calvin (9/5): Relaxing and family run homestay - Loved the calm countryside and host giving us fruits and raki. A bit expensive but we loved it.
- Clare (10/5): It was a special experience staying there - A unique and magical place to stay. Nothing
- Vasilika (9/5): Superb - Delicios food. Very friendly owners. It was like a home for all the guests. It was a very beautiful experience
- Svenja (10/5): My whole family loved it - I just loved it there! My little son was super welcomed and everybody cared! The food was excellent and we had the best stay so far in Albania. Best greetings going out to the Nonas! :-)
The spot was perfect and calm for friends of nature! The private nature water pool was exceptional! We come back for sure
- Cara (10/5): A wonderful traditional experience in a peaceful and beautiful setting. - An authentic experience in a beautiful traditional Kulla. The Kulla has been lovingly restored using a traditional touch. The grounds, including the gardens and stream are peaceful and lush. The dinner and breakfast were plentiful and delicious. The owner, Luli and his wife have done an amazing job in transforming the Kulla into a wonderful attraction. This is not a complaint but just for travellers information. In keeping with its traditional renovation the Kulla doesn’t have air conditioning, so in hot weather it can be quite warm inside.
- Julia (10/5): Perfect place for a relaxing family stay - Unique place in the mountains: great food, incredible hospitality, beautiful garden next to the river and excellent value for money
- Alexandre (10/5): A hidden magic place in Albania - Kulla Hupi teach us that a house could be a home and a fortress at the same time in the mountains of Albania.
The arquitecture is brutal amazing and the garden is very well designed.
We arrived late and they gave us a wonderful, tasting and romantic dinner in the garden.
We figure out too that mantain and rehab a kulla house its expensive. All the love, care and money that this family gave to this house and garden for the last 4 years (and it's not finished) it's superb! What a resilience! The future projects are beautiful and fits so well in the aura of this place.
We wish all the best to keep and continue this beautiful dream and for next time we will try winter season.
- Valerie (10/5): A unique experience! - The Wonderfull location, the very special building full of history, the delightful people. The children also loved the puppy, called Panda. The owner was so helpful when our rental car had a problem. Truly a unique experience to stay here! Sorry we had so little time here. We wanted to stay much longer.
- Valerian (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (10/5): Exceptional - Wow, what an amazing place! The owner/host has done an incredible job renovating this historical building and developing it into a guesthouse. The owner speaks good English, was very welcoming, and explained something of the history of the place and how he is developing the business. His wife made me dinner in the evening and his mother brought me breakfast in the morning. I was the only person staying at the time and was very well looked after. I was surprised there were not more guests. The property includes some beautiful outside seating, with a path down to a little stream, and super views across the valley to mountains. I'd encourage anyone to go and stay here and support this independent family business - they really deserve to succeed with their project to increase visitors to the area. I have no negative comments. It may be worth noting that the style of building is such that it has few windows. The views can be enjoyed from the balconies and the gardens.
- Koceku (10/5): An unforgettable experience in Northern Albania - Great location, yummy food and very kind people! It is an mesmerising old traditional house of the mountains. Museum room, very clean, very delicious local food, the family was super welcoming and nice. The views are great even from the toilet’s window!!
- Clemens (10/5): unique and unforgettable - Kulla Hupi is unique stay within stunning peace of nature. Great hikes around the property, amazing place to hang out and have a fire or chill in the garden. Lul himself is a super nice host who will make everything possible for you to have a nice stay.
- Anonymous (10/5): kendshem - kulla eshte shume e bukur,e ruajtur tradita dhe ushqimi, kulla kishte dhe nje muze te vogel me aksesore te vjeter. asgje cdo ishte perfekte
- Olena (10/5): great hosts, family atmosphere, as if visiting relatives in a country house - really liked the location. energy, fantastic nature, mountains, rivers, forests
- Norman (8/5): Tip top - Beautiful original homestay in the heart of Albania. A very traditional house where is worth staying and enjoying the tasty local food.
- Sadat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anastas (10/5): The best place we stayed during our entire 3 months in Albania! - The best place we stayed during our entire 3 months in Albania! Amazing hospitality and meals from the owner and his family, in a spectacular historic 250-year-old kulla (fortified tower house) with authentic historic features and a wonderful traditional vibe. The property is amazing too, with a stream, fruit trees, and lounge chairs to relax with, listening to the sounds of nature. They also gave us upon arrival and departure delicious fruit compote. Everything was very clean with perfect renovated bathrooms. One of the most unique places we've ever stayed in our travels around the world. Highly recommended!
- Griet (9/5): Superb - The trip is worth it for the hospitality and personality of (mama) Sofia alone! We had a great stay.
- Richard (10/5): A very special place. You must stay here! - Our favourite place we stayed in Albania. The location is peaceful, beautiful and traditional. The hosts were extremely friendly and made us feel welcome straight away. The food was excellent also. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
