Guest Reviews
- Marina (10/5): Perfect - Really lovely and friendly staff. Room was very large, design was unique and charming. Quiet location only 10mins drive from Halstatt. Room did get a bit hot during the day so had to keep the window open which was fine for me.

- Attila (10/5): Hibátlan!!! - Gyönyörű helyen található! A szoba csendes, a kilátás pazar! Voltak magyar alkalmazottak, akik segítettek mindenben. Nagyon kedvesek a tulajdonosok. Korán indultunk haza, és készítettek, csomagoltak reggelit! A tulajdonos még hajnalban kávét is főzött! Külön köszönet érte! Nem volt ilyen!
- Γεωργιος (10/5): Good overall experience - Nice room with antique touch, clean,
Good breakfast and great restaurant, Free parking
Great location for visiting Hallstatt just 10 minutes away by car. Quite expensive at the time of our visit. Poor room amenities.
Vso osebje zelo prijazno, še posebaj Marija. Vsekakor se še vrneva.

- Yoshi (5/5): - Title: A bit of a mixed experience despite the wonderful atmosphere
I feel somewhat conflicted writing this because there were so many wonderful aspects to this stay. I booked three nights here before Christmas because visiting Hallstatt has been a dream of mine for 20 years. After comparing prices and reviews, I chose this place for my 3-night stay. It was not a cheap investment, and I had high expectations.
I must admit, I was likely an unusual guest for the hotel. As a business owner for the past 10 years, I often work on my laptop even during dinner—it is simply my lifestyle and how I exercise my personal freedom. However, this is where my first disappointment lies. Because I was working, I ate very slowly. The waitstaff repeatedly asked me, "Are you finished?" or "Can I take your plate?" throughout my meal. This happened not just on the first night, but at every single breakfast and dinner throughout my stay. It became a significant source of stress.
Even putting the work aside, I came here to relax from the bottom of my heart. Eating slowly was an intentional choice. In my daily life, I eat faster than anyone, but here, I wanted to savor the moment. Looking up from my desk and realizing I am deep in the mountains of Austria is, for me (and likely for any traveler), the ultimate stress relief. Being rushed at every meal significantly marred that experience.
Additionally, my room lacked a proper desk and chair for working. The table in the common area on the second floor was fully covered with Christmas decorations, leaving no space to work, so I had to use the restaurant on the first floor for all three days. I felt the restaurant staff didn't understand that I was forced to be there due to the room's furniture layout.
Visiting Hallstatt has been my dream since middle school; it was the one place I wanted to see before I die.

- Ahmad (8/5): Very nice place, great location, but poor sleeping quality - Location is perfect for sight seeing around the area, free car park , very friendly staff, good breakfast and has a great restaurant, always full of guests It’s not a hotel, it’s a family run guesthouse, with only 4 guest rooms, the rooms are small and because it’s an old building ( well preserved) it didn’t have any AC and we couldn’t sleep at night, couldn’t open the windows because there are no insect nests,
Lokalizacja rewelacyjna.
- Sulaiman (9/5): Superb -
- Tala (10/5): I would highly recommend eating there not just breakfast but lunch and dinner as well ,all food is fresh 100% and super - Everything was perfect from staff to room to food to location to scenery Nothing
- Tony (9/5): Very peaceful and comfortable setting. - The hotel room is surrounded with hard wood decor. Our room is next to a river with a beautiful mountain view. There is not a desk inside the room. But there is a big common area right outside our room. Breakfast is freshly prepared in generous portion. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We had our rental car and it was about 10 minutes scenic ride to Hallstatt.
- Simona (10/5): Amazing staff in a gorgeus setting - Great location and food, a beautiful historical building, near the water with wonderful staff, always there to help you and make your stay as good as possible. The matress and pillows should be harder to have a good night sleep
- Zuzana (10/5): Exceptional - The room was super charming and cozy with great view on the mountain and the river. The bed was comfy, probably the best sleep I got in a long time.
Shower had good water pressure.
The staff was nice and helpful. The food either for lunch/dinner or breakfast was delicious. Just a small suggestion, a small fridge in the room would be welcome, and maybe an electric kettle. Tho the staff was very nice and accomodating, i think if we needed something to store in a cold place they would help us out.
- Diana (10/5): Great experience and planning to be back! ❤️ - The accommodation was an experience in itself!
- lake and mountain view out the window
- the mainly log style interior was very quirky and considered, i loved it!
- super clean and comfortable
- the staff were so friendly and very attentive
- superb location, 7-minute walk away from the train station, the bus stops to and from Hallstatt (centre) were in front of the accom, very convenient
- and the breakfast was excellent
(food and service wise). You go down and the table is set for you. - not major, as I’m alone and staying for just 2 nights, but not sure if new towels will have to be requested for each day
- Giwrgos (10/5): Awesome - The room was exceptional! Everything was so beautiful, a wooden room with an amazing view at the lake & the mountains! In the morning there were even swans swimming outside of our window! It was very clean, spacious & had all the amenities even a very powerful hairdryer! Also when we got there we found sweet treats! The breakfast was very good and so was the dinner & the sweets too! All of the staff was very nice, polite & helpful! Totally recommended!
- Arda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shelby (7/5): A charming family-run accommodation! - Staff were very friendly and accommodating. My dog was able to join and he is a bit anxious/fearful, which they were mindful of. Breakfast was tasty with bread, cheese, meats, and fruits, plus made-to-order options and coffee. Beautiful, calm area - all you can hear at night is the river, despite being next to the road. Not much around the property to do, but easy access to Hallstatt, Bad Goisern, and Gosau. The dog fee was a bit much just because there was no extra or daily cleaning - a one-time fee vs nightly charge would have been better, but I would still stay there again.
- Alex (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hailey (9/5): Cozy place for a visit - Located in a quieter neighborhood, it was a lovely place to spend a couple of nights. The room is beautiful with carved wood furnishings and stone floors. They decorated the room for us, the shower was exceptional, the toilet was in a separate room from the shower which is a bonus. The place itself was clean and the view of the river was beautiful. The restaurant was really good! the breakfast was very filling and they made eggs upon request for you. One thing to watch for is that there no reception, so you have to say when you arrive and stick to that time. The room was warm and there was no fan to cool it.
- Christopher (8/5): Clean, quiet hotel. - Friendly staff, quiet room, clean, good breakfast. Small room, no refrigerator in room, bottom bed sheet was rough, towels were thin.
- A (10/5): Wonderful welcoming place to stay and dine! - This was a really beautiful and cosy hotel. I was a solo traveller here and I felt very well looked after by the owners and staff.
My room was beautiful, with a view of the river and mountains. There was even a view of a waterfall from the shower!
There's a very nice place for swimming just a few minutes walk away from the hotel and it's about 7 minutes walk to the train station, which is well connected to towns and cities in the region.
Breakfast at the hotel was very good, with very generous portions. And I would recommend eating at the restaurant, which had a really nice atmosphere and fantastic traditional dishes.
- Tanya (9/5): Location, staff and great food make the Welterbe-Wirtshaus Steegwirt a great vacation spot. - The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast that is included with the room rate was far better than we had anticipated! Everything was fresh, very tasty and more than we could eat. There was a variety of fresh breads, fruits, jams, assortment cheeses and meats; and they even offer additional hot items if you want any.
We also had two very good dinners at the restaurant, which is very popular so make a reservation and eat outside by the water. We knew when we booked that there was no air conditioning in the hotel but we thought that there would be a fan to help circulate the air. There is a window and when we opened it at night, the room was comfortable. During the day it was very warm even with the window opened so it was not comfortable to stay in the room during the day and up to later in the evening.
- Julia (9/5): Excellent - The hotel is small with only a few rooms but with a thriving restaurant. It is situated at the side of the Traun at the opposite end of the Halstattersee to Halstatt which is one of the most visited towns locally. We had a bus stop right outside and it was very easy to get to Halstatt or any of the local towns using the local service.
The restaurant provides a wide variety of extremely good quality Austrian food and appears to be a popular place for locals to eat. The staff are very approachable and helpful.
The hotel rooms are rustic in style but fully modernised. The modernisation has been completed very thoughtfully and in keeping with the 450 year old history of the building. I was extemely pleased with the accommodations and the location which also provides a private balcony for the rooms and a green space with easy access to the lake. It was extremely hot when we visited. Unfortunately there is no air conditioning though the windows can be opened and due to the location it can cool down quite quickly. Having a free standing fan would’ve been a bonus.
- Cristian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place, staff and food.
- David (10/5): Exceptional - The location was second to none, the room was beyond anything we've been to in Europe so far. The whole experience was just incredible. If you want to experience Austria then this is definitely one of the places to go. I can't say anything bad about it.
- Bogumil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hui (9/5): Superb -
- Fredbbl (7/5): Very good place but too expensive - Localisation
Personnel
Style Restaurant is really too expensive. Example: tap water bottle for 3 eur!
No drinking glasses in the bedroom (to force client to buy water bottles)
Few tv channels (news in english) cannot be watched and need a code ?!
Dust in the bedroom (200 eur per night!) the daily cleaning consists of making bed
- Tengiz (10/5): Exceptional - The place is beautiful and convenient. It is accessable with public transport (bus stops in front of the guesthouse). Also, convenient to visit Hallstatt (5 min by bus). The restaurant has a great chef and food was delicious 😋. I enjoyed my breakfast with a beautiful view of Alpes. The room was a fairytale looking, spacious with a comfort beyond imagination. The view from my room was breathtaking. Also, would like to thank hosts for such an amazing hospoitaltiy. It was amazing to stay there!
- Jim (10/5): Wunderbar. Hervorragend. Wir sehen uns wieder! - The family Grampelhuber were wonderful hosts. Mom, Dad, two sons, two daughter (in law), and two grandchildren, along with a fine and attentive staff. The food, both breakfast and dinner, was outstanding. Music filled the house. We will long look on our Austrian visit to Bad Goisern and Steegwirt fondly. A nightlight for middle-of-the-night bathroom visits would be appreciated.
- Dudarev (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zhen (10/5): unique and comfortable - Unique old house in a very quiet and beautiful place. The restaurant is really good, almost the best local food we had in Austria.
- Loudmila (10/5): Amazing - Amazing place, the stuff so nice and caring
The room so cozy, the bed super comfortable and view unbelievable!
It’s great that you have a restaurant, that serve high quality food
super fast service
10/10♥️
- Horst (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was good, nice room In the room there could have been one comfortable chair to sit in
- Wioletta (9/5): Superb -
- Anna (9/5): I truely reccommend stay in this magic place. - Wonderful family atmosphere. Long tradition of heritage - very impressive. Incredibly fancy and inspirative room. comfortable beds. Very good food. View to the lake, mountains and stream. Green-blue heaven. Too much smell of cooked souerkraut everywhere in the hotel coming into room.
- Gwenael (10/5): An extraordinary experience - The rooms are decorated in a very unusual and clever way, playing on the culture of wood from the region. The choice of high quality materials makes the place totally silent (when windows are closed) and you can just enjoy the view on the Traun river and the lake. Having dinner outside was quite a treat.
Make sure you stay for lunch or dinner: the award given by Gault&Millau is perfectly deserved, this is the best place to eat in the region. Make sure also to book in advance, the place is famous in the region. Despite the vicinity of the lake, there is no equipment (such as a pier or a sunbathing place) to enjoy a dip in the lake. Breakfast is served at 8 am, which was fine for us but may be late for others.
- Jane (10/5): Excellent place to stay if visiting Hallstatt and the surrounding area - Excellent location, beautiful views over the river with a mountain backdrop. Rooms very comfortable, hotel tastefully restored with a lot of character
- Giuseppe (9/5): Fantastic, to be back. - Lovely location, really authentic with a special strategic spot to reach all the good places around. I think the rooms are really nice, big and clean. Breakfast it's pretty centered around savory one, would have loved to see something more in the sweet area. Nothing major, everything excellent.
- Angelica (10/5): Exceptional -
- George (10/5): Very nice, quiet hotel and a great restaurant - The location is amazing. We also stayed on the day when the restaurant was closed, which meant that there were no people around and everything was very quiet. It's a great stay if you want to avoid other "touristic" locations. And the restaurant is a must to visit.
- Aznh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dorota (8/5): Very good -
- Omer (2/5): Very poor -
- Nenad (9/5): Superb -
- Nassim (8/5): Relaxing, comfortable stay with delicious food - Location next to the river is beautiful. The food was excellent. One of the best restaurants I've ever been to and worth the price. Quality ingredients, in the summer the fish is fresh caught from the river. The trout was outstanding. It was not really within close walking distance to much, and is just off the road, but we would still recommend it.
- Marion (10/5): A perfect stay near Hallstatt - This guesthouse is really special. The rooms are very imaginatively decorated and the whole place was refurbished beautifully in 2017. Bathroom was excellent, bed and the room were both huge and cosy.Luisa was so friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Breakfast was great, a good selection of meats, cheeses, breads and sweet items, plus eggs cooked to order. The guest house is a short walk from Steeg-Gosau train station and is well placed for a visit to Hallstatt. Bonus: the lovely resident black Labradors :) Nothing. This is one of the best places I have stayed in many years of travel.
- Xiaoyu (9/5): Superb - The hotel locates at a perfect position: a few minutes' walk from the train station Steeg-Gosau (which takes only another few minutes to the Hallstatt train station). Foods there were pretty good (we took dinner and breakfast). BTW the view around the hotel is already quite fascinating :-) Probably you might need to take a few efforts if you want to go to a supermarket
- Tomas (10/5): Litte Austrian fairytale - Very cozy rustic cabin close to the water. The history “screams” at you from every corner. All the staff are very polite, friendly and caring - highlighting the fact that its a family business. You really feel like at home. However, theres one thing that deserves an individual praise on its own - the kitchen. The menu is amazing. Every dish we tried for lunch and for dinner not only looked great but tasted great as well. Simply awesome. Hats off to the chef for the presentation and the taste. These kind of dishes one would expect in a high end restaurant in Vienna for example. For us best food we ever had in Austria by far. The weather, but unfortunately we cannot influence that (yet). :)

- Viktoriia (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Our stay at Steegwirt exceeded our expectations. Everything was simple great, starting by how we were greeted by one of the owners, and ending with the fascinating view from the window of our room. A river is running at the foot of the hotel and right after it is a mountain with a waterfall🗻 what a view to wake up to!
The food is also delicious with a number of Austrian dishes made from local ingredients, and the breakfast is one of the best we've ever had during traveling.
There is pretty much everything you need in the room, and the staff will give you anything you lack. The rooms are clean and designed in a traditional Austrian style with a modern twist.
Thank you Steegwirt team for an amazing Christmas stay!
We hope to come again one day! -
- Elizabeth (10/5): just amazing - super clean with excellent food nothing
- Holly (9/5): We had a great time here and would've like to stay longer! Very charming - This is a beautiful Inn next to a river. The renovation on the property is beautiful and very "alpine". The room was charming, breakfast and dinner very good and the staff very attentive. a bedside table would be helpful and face cloths in the bathroom and a few more hooks on walls for coats or clothing
- Irit (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing hotel!
All the facilities in the room and around the hotel - the view, the food . We really wanted to stay longer!
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kristýna (9/5): Nice stay in rustical hotel - Stylish rooms, very gently renovated, still having
the comfort, nice views, close to Hallstat town,
the sound of the River is very calming The towels could be bigger, having a condicioner
in the shower would be nice and costs nothing
i would appreciate having regular door to the toilet
with no hole in it :) the breakfast was served, was OK, we reallly did not appreciate the restazrant
although it is rated No.2 in the area, Austrian cuisine is not the watermouthing one
- Petra (10/5): Exceptional - Location, room design, delicious breakfast, big TV with streaming apps. The room is small, but cute! Our room looked onto the river, and the water was a bit loud, but only with the windows open.
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Yellow (10/5): Perfect stay in a beautiful place. - Exceptionally beautiful place with great breakfast, nice staff and dogs are welcome. The WiFi is quite slow and there is no airconditioning in the room.
