Guest Reviews

- Gwo Taur (8/5): -
- János (6/5): - Közel a 10-s metro.
Jó kávézó van az udvarban. Még nem kaptam meg az igért számlát!
- Gašper (5/5): Sadly, profoundly disappointing. - The atmosphere of the garden in front of the entrance is very nice. The location of the hotel is also very nice. The overall experience was profoundly disappointing, especially considering the price point. Communication was a critical issue, as no staff member we encountered spoke English, forcing constant reliance on translation. Our initial room was small and featured concerning brown/red stains on the curtains. Worse, a loud, constant noise later made sleep impossible, leading to a room change, only for us to be informed we’d have to relocate again the next morning due to a booking conflict. Both the first and third small rooms had uncomfortably stiff mattresses and felt damp despite the renovations. Finally, the breakfast offering was severely limited and lacked quality, restricting non-hot-dish customers to basic toast, jam, and minimal fruit. Fundamental improvements in communication, quality control, and dining are necessary to meet guest expectations.

- Esther (7/5): Good value for money - The hotel is located in a quiet area. The garden has a little cafe and a flower shop which is quite cute. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was nice. The interior is quite dark and the place smelled a little damp. (It was very hot and humid when we were there.) It’s also quite far from the main attractions in Shanghai so you need to use a taxi to get around.
- Paolo (7/5): Good -
- graemec794 (8/5): An individual oasis - Arriving in Shanghai from travels in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia we found Shanghai was far more of a culture shock- not set up for western tourists as evidenced by the need for apps even to get a meal in McDonalds. We chose this hotel because it is in the former French Concession, so a low rise area with some interesting architecture. It proved to be in a good location near Jiao Tong University Metro station - Lines 10 and 11. Whilst we used the Didi app if we had luggage or were tired after a day's sightseeing the Metro in Shanghai is excellent. Extensive and good value- the MAGLEV train is far costlier- although still not expensive. Our Didi car dropped us off at the entrance to the hotel. There is a flower shop at the entrance so you walk down a drive past a drive to another building then a wonderful coffee shop and arrive at the entrance. The hotel was decorated for Christmas. We checked in at reception where we were greeted by two women who spoke English. That's not to be taken for granted in Shanghai . Most of the other staff we met at breakfast or cleaners did not speak English but were very friendly and full of smiles. We were told we'd been upgraded and got room 308 so we got the lift up there with our luggage. It was on the front of the hotel and was fine- warm and comfortable with lots of freebies including beer and Pepsi in the fridge.
The hotel is interesting- interesting rooms and individual furniture
Breakfast was a bit of a culture shock- nice coffee and toast and butter but also a plate with boiled eggs and corn on the cob.
One day we asked the women on reception if they could buy us tickets to the Shanghai Greenhouse. They hadn't heard of it so we showed them the web page and they bought tickets on their phone. We took a photo of the QR cade and it was sorted. We paid when we left. We should add the Shanghai Greenhouse was outstanding: world class. It's an essential place to visit.
It was great each evening to come back and have a coffee in the coffee shop. A very friendly young man served us and whilst we were supposed to order off a QR code he helped us. The ambiance was superb- again very individual furnishings and there was Brazilian samba and bossa nova playing . Just a great relaxing vibe that helped us deal with the differences that we found in China
We were very pleased to have stayed at this Chinese owned hotel and would recommend.
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional - I felt that the hotel always took care of me. Very nice stay with kind staff and in calm area.
- Pinn (10/5): A beautiful place to stay in a location close to the French quarter and the city. Highly recommended - I liked the room - they upgraded me to a room with a balcony. I thought the room and hotel looked better in real life than in the photos. The Soho was beautifully designed. The breakfast was great. They made every effort to make sure you were happy with your stay. Nothing, it was fine. I would definitely stay at this accommodation again in the future if in Shanghai.
- Julia (8/5): Perfect neighbourhood for vacation. - The hotel is located in lovely area with lots of tiny boutiques, cafes and clubs. The neighbourhood is lovely and perfect for walking. The staff is very helpful and makes the stay very pleasant. There is also a wine bar at the hotel, which can be a very rewording thing after a long trip. Breakfast is okay, though there could be more options.
- Sue (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dirk (6/5): Comfort missing - The location is 5 mins walking distance to the metro station with the lines 10 and 11.
The Café at the entrance gate is very comfortable. Giving a lunch package of an apple and a banana. The bed was too hard. The light at the mirror in the bath was not bright enough. The possibility of seating in the room was too unfortable, and not suitable for working with the laptop. The closet was quite small and open. Price too high for the rather low comfort
- Changchang (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel service is tip top, very friendly and heartwarming staff, everyone there is smiling and willing to help 😊. location is no question, one of the best in Shanghai, just green and quiet, but meters away you can just find numbers of Bistros, Cafes, restaurants and shops. Will recommend this hotel to friends. Only one thing I'd like to mention, that the room could be more clean, specially the floor.
- Kimmo (9/5): I warmly recommend it for those seeking a refreshing change from international chain hotels. - I had a delightful stay at Rate Shanghai Soho Garden Hotel. The ambiance was cozy and inviting. Despite being tucked away, the location offered a serene atmosphere; I even slept with the window open without disturbance. However, I warmly recommend it for those seeking a refreshing change from international chain hotels. The bed was a tad firm, so if you prefer something softer, it might not be the ideal choice for you.
- Ming (10/5): Great pick for those who want to stay at the heart of French concession - Great setting and location. Nice cat Nothing
- James (10/5): Cute, warm and welcoming guesthouse in Shanghai - This hotel was a very cute and authentic hotel. The staff were super friendly, breakfast was yummy, everything was clean and working. Our beds were comfy and there was a cute hotel cat who hung around in the foyer. Good location, in a more residential district but easy enough to get everywhere.
- Valeryan1999 (10/5): Exceptional - Not my first time in the hotel. Perfect as always. The room was upgraded for free on arrival.
- Di (8/5): Very good -
- worldmaps (8/5): Small Hotel with a "Homie" Atmosphere - The hotel has a homie feeling, and their lovely resident cat adds to that touch. The staff was friendly and helpful, although they did not speak English very well; it was hard at times to communicate with some of them (but keep in mind this might be the case in most hotels throughout China). It was very clean - the lobby, the room, and other common areas. They were very accommodating with our requests. There are few good restaurants around (some non-expensive local foods, and some a little more upscale catering to expats). There is a mall about 3 blocks away (if you have any emergency/last-minute purchases to make). We always felt safe walking out around the area at night. I would definitely stay here again.
- PrairiePaddler (10/5): An Oasis in the French Concession - We wanted to stay in the vicinity of the famous Old Jesse restaurant and the Heydey jazz club and our Chinese host booked this gem of a hotel, tucked away in one of the most charming neighborhoods in the historic French colonial district. We had a room with a large terrace, affording a peaceful outdoors escape for tea in the morning and at the end of the day. The room was well appointed, beds were comfortable, staff was friendly, and the location was ideal. This is a hidden gem of a boutique hotel, a real treasure.
- eleonorav96 (10/5): Three hours to sleep here on a 24hours visa free stay - What a wonderful neighbourhood, the French Concession, for this small but lovely hotel. My daughter and I stayed here for just three hours to have a powernap while transiting Shanghai from Sydney.
Staff was friendly, the manager was kind and spoke English excellent.
Complimentary Latte in the shadow rich and cool green garden.
Lovely small but efficient bathroom. Nice paintings in the hotel. Great relaxing atmosphere, would go there again when in Shanghai!
lovely old green district were buildings are just two storeys high.
- Anette74 (10/5): Great place - This place was recommended to me by a colleague. What a great place! Situated in
a very nice, quiet area (but close to Jiaotong metro station) this hotel gave me the feeling of being at home away from home. It looks more like a big villa than a hotel. Very cosy feel (including fresh flowers and a fat cute cat in the lobby). I loved the fact that milk and fruit were brought to the room each day. Very friendly staff and although not everybody was fluent in English they did their utmost best to help me. WiFi available and nicely decorated rooms. On the premises a great sushi restaurant (Michelin recommended) which also serves as a breakfast place in the morning with a very friendly waitress. Don’t expect a buffet: but she will show you pictures on her phone and you can choose your items (including croissant, fruit, toast, coffee and juice.). Just within a couple of minutes walk you can either have great French food (la Petanque) or typical Shanghai noodles. Would definitely visit again!
