Guest Reviews
- ERIKO (9/5): -
- Frae Valdehuesa (10/5): Convenient stay plus amazing staff - Convenient location, the room was big with balcony and the bathroom was spacious as well. Amazing staff, very helpful and polite. Easily one of my fave go-to hotels in the area since I love staying near Phrom Phong. Looking forward to the next stay! Right next to it is a weed shop so going in and out of the hotel you will have a whiff of weed.
- PASCAL (8/5): Très bien - Bien situé balcon bon rapport qualité prix Un peu bruyant le soir
- CHAI LING (2/5): - There is a small section next to the hotel’s main entrance that is occupied by a cannabis shop, and the smell of marijuana is very strong. This was quite unpleasant and seriously did not match the photos shown in the listing.
- PASCAL (8/5): très bien - bon emplacement et bon rapport qualité prix un peu bruyant le soir
- Tsgo (8/5): - Near BTS station Only little bit warm water in shower.
Only 1 car parking for free...no parking in that area
- fahad (8/5): - Location is wonderful because of the BTS almost 50 m.
The staff were helpful
- Miles (7/5): - Quiet
- Thomas (10/5): - Super Nothing
- Chitlada (4/5): Nah ! Yes for last minute - Only location and staff Weed smell was everywhere. Bed sheet was kinda dirty. AC was so smelly like a curry smell.
- Rock (8/5): The location of Hotel Retro39 is close to the BTS station and the hotel is also convenient. - 1. The location of this hotel is very close to the BTS PHROM PHONG station and it makes it easy for me to move when traveling via BTS.
2. I booked this room at the last minute for a stay of 1 night only and I am very satisfied with the neat and clean room. The room is also spacious for 2 people.
3. The facilities in the room are also provided such as an electric kettle, 2 bottles of mineral water, a mini fridge, a hairdryer and a safety box.
4. There are many shops around the hotel area such as a spa massage center, restaurants, pubs and also a 7-eleven convenience store.
5. This hotel is suitable for solo travelers or small groups. Not suitable for large families because the hotel environment is very narrow especially in the main lobby area. 1. The room booked has no window.
2. The hairdryer is broken. ( Room 503 )
3. The lights in the room are quite dark.
4. A deposit of THB1000 must be paid before being given the room key. The deposit will be returned upon check-out.

- PASCAL (9/5): Parfait - Super emplacement,bon accueil
- Bronwyn (10/5): - Great stay - excellent location!
- Dominic (7/5): Great budget friendly hotel - Hotels in great location, right next to a big shopping centre and BTS train so everything is very convenient. There's a small 7-11 just opposite hotel as well.
Bed was comfortable and everything normal was provided, water, coffee, soap shampoo, and even a toothbrush and toothpaste set which is amazing for a hotel in the pice point.
Reception staff were friendly and helpful, booked me a taxi to the airport. There's was construction going on somewhere near which was very loud. Not the hotels fault of course just unlucky with the time I visited.
The doors on the balcony allow a lot of sound through so can hear traffic noise all night.

- CHIANG HAN (1/5): - 樓下賣大麻,租客在陽台上吸大麻,空氣充滿大麻味,無法休息睡覺😠😠😠
- Jean (10/5): Super - Le Personnel est super. Rien
- Philip (10/5): Nice stay - Good hotel in a great area, very comfortable, stayed here before
- Rushy65 (10/5): Great value great location - Great friendly staff, very helpful.
Great location. Nothing
- Robert (6/5): Not for me again - Noisy outside, try to pass me off with room I did not book
- Sayed (5/5): Budget/backpacker's hotel - Biggest advantages is the location as the Em Quarter & Emporium mall as well as Prom Phrong BTS sky train It was completely wrong selection for me, it's more of a budget hotel, good for Solo bachelor travelers, not at all suitable for couple, the amenities are basic, bed was not comfy at all, most importantly no safety box in the room. Overall experience wasn't good, so I stayed only 1 night & them move to another hotel although I paid for full 3 nights.
- Tabassum (8/5): Very good - Location is excellent and the Staff speaks proper English
- Alexander (8/5): A nice place with balcony (penthouse floor). - The location and food environment near hotel Error in key system, sometimes need to update to customer services in the ground floor.
- Dankat (8/5): Very good - -Location close to Sukhumvit road
-The room was clean and modern
-The staff were helpful and spoke good English. -No window in the room ( I was aware, but no other options were available)
-As other reviewers have mentioned, the water in the shower is not warm. It is not cold either, but if you enjoy hot showers, you won't be getting them here
-I was told that payment would only be accepted in cash as I was checking out. I thought it would be processed from my card so I had already used all the Thai baht I had. In the end it turned out it was possible to pay by card so I don't know what that was all about
-The walls are very thin
- Lguirati (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kurt (7/5): Fine for a single night or two... -
- Francesco (7/5): Nice place! - The location is perfect for short say, rooms are brand new and confy Connecting room next to me, can hear everything from the other room.
- Aftar (10/5): Exceptional - They let us check in at 11pm, seem to always have somebody at reception at all times. Very very friendly (I think) Indian people!
1k deposit returned immediately at check out.
Room and bathroom excellent, perfect for the average person sightseeing. Wow at the location, couldn't have done better. 3 min walk from train station, 10 min walk from nightlife on Soi Cowboy.
Yes there is a weed shop nextdoor to the entrance yeah (just like the thousands all over Thailand), so if you want a polite family vacation and this upsets you maybe book somewhere 3X the price. But for a couple of younger guys who are still having a laugh in life, it's perfect!!!
Definitely planning another stay here asap! My own fault : I'm scared of heights and balcony is kinda small so you might have to sit on the floor to smoke your cigarettes lol
- Lim (2/5): REGRET TO SELECT THIS HOTEL - NOTHING ROOM/BATHROOM
- Philip (7/5): Good value in a small retro boutique hotel with clean and comfortable rooms - A last minute booking as due to a Booking.com error. A pleasant surprise, small, probably 40 rooms in retro style but very clean and comfortable and friendly staff was the cherry on top. nothing that I can think of considering the price
- Ben (1/5): Bad - Nothing - this business should be investigated for fraudlent activity Property charged my card $400, I asked to change my room and canceled my reservation, to change my dates, after that the property declined to offer me a room or my money back, even though the room was empty - thai police and embassy were involved - be cautious of Retro39
- Jags (8/5): Very good -
- Sootgetsthemoot (7/5): Good - It was close to Everything Hot water wasn't working
- Ed (5/5): Passable -
- Francis (9/5): Ok - Good and clean, very close to bts Phromphong station No window
- Mark (8/5): Was ok - Location good. Did not do breakfast Did not clean room & did not restock water or coffee
Air conditioning pointing down right on bed so either very cold in bed or if turned off very hot in bed
Could not adjust where flow was directed
- Ben (1/5): ⚠️ SCAM WARNING - Retro39 and its employees are a disgrace to Thai culture and Buddhist tradition - As a long-term traveler and resident of Thailand for over five years, I have come to love and respect the rich culture and warm hospitality that this country offers. I have visited and stayed in over 50+ hotels and accommodations.
However, my recent encounter with Retro39 has drastically tainted this image, showcasing a level of behavior I've never experienced before in Thailand.
I initially booked a 9-night stay at Retro39, drawn by their seemingly appealing facilities and location. However, due to unforeseen changes in my schedule, I needed to modify my reservation. This is where the nightmare began. Despite the hotel appearing mostly vacant, the staff refused to accommodate any changes to my booking. In an attempt to resolve the issue, I cancelled my reservation with the intention of rebooking. Shockingly, once I cancelled, they barred any rebooking options, refused to undo the cancellation, and, most astoundingly, retained the full $400 payment without providing any services or a room.
So to summarize - I was charged for 9 nights, and then after cancelling and trying to rebook, they decided not to give me anything, they didn't want to give me any nights, or none of the money back, so I was left without a room AND without the money.
After talking with Booking.com about this (which they agreed was very strange), they said they have nothing they can do, and I need to work directly with the property.
Faced with this blatant scam, I reached out to various avenues for help, including the local police and the Thai embassy, both of which have now initiated a thorough investigation into the property.
The unprofessionalism didn't stop at just their booking policies. The staff's behavior was juvenile and dismissive throughout the ordeal. This establishment’s practices seem to be deceitful, as evident from numerous similar complaints by other guests. These include unauthorized charges, refusal to issue refunds, and a general lack of accountability. Their responses to online reviews are superficially polite, yet consistently deceptive, further indicating their manipulative tactics.
To potential visitors, I strongly recommend steering clear of Retro39. The risk of falling prey to their questionable policies and behavior far outweighs any potential benefits of a stay. This hotel is a disgrace not only to Thai hospitality but also to the peaceful and ethical principles of Buddhist culture that Thailand is renowned for. Their actions reflect a deep-seated greed and lack of integrity that should prompt serious introspection among the management and staff.
As a parting note, I've attached screenshots of my conversations with the property, which serve as indisputable evidence of their deceptive practices. Let my unfortunate experience serve as a cautionary tale to all. It is disheartening to see such an establishment operate, and I sincerely hope that justice through legal and social avenues will soon address their unscrupulous operations. While I believe karma will eventually address such misconduct, I pray that those involved will come to realize the harm they are doing and make amends.
BEWARE OF HARRY AND THE THAI GIRL THAT WORKS IN THE PROPERTY - this is just my opinion based on my experience, I pray they will make peace with god, and understand that the path they are taking goes against Thai and Buddhist culture
NOTE: They may respond by saying that everything was outlined in their policy, which is technically true. However, having a policy designed to deceive doesn't absolve them from engaging in fraudulent or unethical practices. They should be ashamed of running a business like this.
(I run a very big Thai review website, and will make sure all of my followers are aware of this incident)
- Yaninee (4/5): Good for short trip but will not recommend for solo female traveller - Near cannabis shop, loud noise at night, smoking smell from outside, uncomfortable bed
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Jason (10/5): I found Retro36 very relaxing due to it's quieter than many location and easy to access necessities. - Helpful staff. Clean room. Very sufficient amenities. Great location close to public transport, shopping and plentiful variety of meals just a minutes walk from Retro 39. Nothing. Best accommodation I had in Bangkok.
- Adrian (10/5): clean tidy close to train - excellent location nothing very satisfied
- Stuart (8/5): A good budget option for a short stay. - A really good budget hotel, Friendly staff loads to do in walking distance and the shy train is only a short walk away. No real problems
- shinichi (10/5): - 立地が非常に良く食事も安易に出来最高です。
- Erika (7/5): Good - Location is good, near BTS station.
Easy access to food, transportation, shopping.

- Jc (8/5): Convenient hotel close to BTS. -
- Niklas (9/5): Superb -
- Barry (1/5): Bad -
- Jc (7/5): Good hotel for a short stay in Sukhumvit area. -
- Edward (8/5): Low price comfortable accommodation in a good location of Bangkok with some drawbacks. - Low price. The comfortable bed and good bathroom, specially the shower and hot and cold water with right pressure.
Convenient location that was close to BTS and food outlets. The staff were good. The window that was facing the street didn’t have sound proofing. In the evening the noise coming from the streets was unbearable. This is the main complaint I have. Other problem was that there was no access to the balcony and door permanently locked.
- Tabassum (8/5): Very good - The location is spot on. The staff were friendly.
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Ian (8/5): Very good -

- Masahiro (8/5): - convenient location.
- Lam (9/5): Superb -
- Makhsat (9/5): Superb - Location, staff, facilities. Smallish, but great value for the money. Nothing
- Gesthimani (10/5): Great price, great location !! - The room was clean and the location good . The Bts (subway) is a 3 minute walk , there is a 7-11 across the street and a marijuana joint right downstairs. Not a upscale neighborhood but safe and convenient!! Great price , good room !! Liked everything
- Thomas (7/5): Good -
- Thomas (9/5): Good location and close to shopping centres - Super close to the BTS sky train. Great clean facilities with nice modern deco
Affordable
Close to shopping centres Next to a weed shop.
The TV doesn’t connect to wifi
- Spiros (7/5): Good -
- Tsung-fu (7/5): Good -
- Nur (8/5): All was good just the toilet drainage problem. - Near to the BTS Shower area, the drainage were blocked.
- Rawisara (9/5): Great location! Clean room! Staff friendly! - Great location!!! near skytrain station, convenient store and department store. Staff are friendly. The room is wide and clean. My room is a connecting room. I heard my next door do anything as brush their teeth or talking. They didn't make any noise but I heard. TT
- Elsie (8/5): Definitely will come back to stay here again. - The highlight of the hotel is the location. Easy access to BTS. There's a restaurant, 7-11 and massage parlor nearby. Reception was attentive and available all the time. Our room has no windows and you can hear people talking, walking and even showering. Luckily, during our stay the guest next to our room is considerate.
- Almacala1976 (7/5): Good - The location of the hotel is the best. Near the BTS, Lawson and 7-11 stores downstairs, Street food and the famous IM Chan restaurant is just around the corner. Strong water pressure in the shower, bidet in the toilet. The exhaust fan in the toilet ceiling is super full of dirt.
Only one card key is given, so when one of us is leaving the room, the other needs to leave the card key at the reception when he leaves.
- Almacala1976 (7/5): Good - Location The room given to us on our 2nd stay is noisy as we hear the aircon compressor for the window.
- Avijit (9/5): Superb -
- Matthew (7/5): Good -
- Spiros (8/5): Great price at a great location - Clean
Good value for money
Friendly staff
Great location Level 2 is noisy. Air conditioning just outside the windows.
Also the safe deposit boxes need to fixed securely to the furniture
Besides this the place is great
- Takehiko (10/5): Amazing - Big room, quick check in, and good shop at the ground floor. That is 24h open. No
- Francesco (10/5): Exceptional - Location and room are super nice!!! Nothing, everything was ok
- Stan (9/5): Superb - Staff very helpful. Connecting door to next room, could hear everything.
- Nikola (7/5): Enjoy - Convenient
- Ann (8/5): Value for money. Short short stay is ok - Location and quite quiet The maintenance needs upgrading. The cables and metal bars outside the window are unsightly. Wall paper is torn and dusty.
- Siew (8/5): Very good -
- Senthil (8/5): Good comfortable stay... - Location in Soi 39, near to phrom pong BTS...
Very near to all happening places... Very prime location. Balcony in all rooms... Clean toilets and value for money... Good for both solo and family travellers... No morning breakfast..
Cleaning is done only if we request (actually saves lot of water).
- Jutamat (5/5): Passable - Near BTS Not clean!
- Aaron (8/5): Very good -
- Steve (7/5): Over very good value, would stay again - The price and location Be nice to have a few more coffee and tea sachets and milk
- Keisuke (3/5): Poor - Location I choose room with balcony.
But there is no balcony.
- Marc (1/5): Do not stay here - Horrible even for a budget hotel in Bangkok. Highly recommend avoiding this hotel. Not only does this place have problems with providing a functional bathroom, cleanliness, and general sanitation it also has a problem with theft which the staff are actually engaged in. Place wasn't clean at all. Air conditioning barely worked. There were several times when there was no water so neither the toilet nor the showers would work for long periods of time. They demanded a cash deposit when I arrived. This is irregular even for Bangkok. They ended up stealing this cash deposit from me. Place is ran by a bunch of thieves. There are many better options in many better locations that cost even less. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place.
- Byaoi (7/5): Good -
- Terry (7/5): Good value for money - Mere steps away from Phrom Pong BTS station. Great food at a wide range of prices. Staff were helpful.
- Ian (3/5): Just a sleep & leave place - Good location. Everything old, lack of maintenance and no proper cleaning service. 1000Bath for check in deposit is not a friendly service
