Guest Reviews
- yi chang (10/5): - Just in the center and with everything around. Prepare for the noise of Cairo, you will get use to it for a while.
- marisa (6/5): - Noi abbiamo soggiornato per 2 notti
Il personale è gentile, reception (24 su 24)
zona centrale ben servita, silenzioso
Stanze rifatte ogni giorno, letti comodi, camera grande
Propre
Acceuil top Un peux chere (qualité/prix)
Pensione pulita e accogliente in pieno centro, personale gentile è quasi come stare in famiglia.
- Nathan (10/5): - Pension Roma is not your typical hotel—and that’s exactly the point. If you’re expecting polished luxury, look elsewhere. This is an old-school downtown Cairo building with character: creaky floors, a slightly intimidating elevator, and a mix of rooms—some with private baths, some without. But if you understand what you’re walking into, it’s part of the charm rather than a drawback.
What makes this place special is the atmosphere and the people it attacks. Pension Roma seems to pull in travelers who are curious, thoughtful, and more sophisticated than the average tourist. It’s rate to see a hotel like this these days. You’ll probably also meet writers, backpackers, academics, and people who actually want to experience authentic Cairo.
The location is centered in an area with lively streets, local food, and zero of the overly commercial “tourist Egypt” feel. Yet inside, it’s frozen in time and calm. The breakfast is simple and the staff are genuinely kind and helpful in a way that feels personal.
- Marco (7/5): - Great great staff. Right in the center of the city. Excellent value for money and the feeling of being an archeologist in the 20ies. Rooms were very very noisy. Bed bugs on the mattrass.
- Juliette (10/5): shhhh... a gem in Cairo. Magical place. Only for the chosen travellers... - shhhh... a gem in Cairo. Magical place. Only for the chosen travellers... imperfection is perfection. Especially when you travel in time.

- yi chang (10/5): - Good location and helpful staff !
Always come back . This is the place for this price.
Not perfect but it is Cairo !
- James (10/5): - Great location in downtown Cairo. Very helpful and attentive staff Knowledgeable front desk.Very quiet.Arranged departure taxi Very nicely. No dislikes
- Jean (9/5): -
- yi chang (10/5): - Good location and friendly staff. Old-fashioned hotel with comfort. The mosquito could be annoying if just for few days.
Besides, traffic noise is around the street although it will calm down after midnight.
- Anna (8/5): Excellent value for money. - Good service, clean, friendly, good value for money. Bathroom very tired and shower not great.
- Judith (8/5): - People, pleasant, helpful Noise of trafficl
- Olga (5/5): - I had the most amazing balcony with the stunning view (if you don't mind noise, it's worth it!) but also I must say that for such an old building the windows were very isolating. Most of the pension staff are very lovely people and were here for me. I loved my old furniture, giving my stay a special Cairo touch. For those who book through booking - the property does not issue a receipt while it's their obligation. I am a very frequent traveler and it never happened to me to be refused an invoice while booking through booking, especially while traveling for work it's a bummer.
A perfume that has a lot of sentimental value for me, has disappeared from my room. The computer was there too, but it stayed! So I guess the cleaning person loved it as much as myself.

- Brigitte (10/5): Beautiful Jugendstil hotel with very gentle owner family, a gem not to miss! - Leaving busy Mohammed Farid Street and taking the elevator to Pension Roma in the 4th floor, is like a time travel to around 1900. Pension Roma is a quiet oasis built in wonderful Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style with each room differently. Wooden parquet floors and plenty of gorgeous details which you won't find in Europe anymore as most of theses houses are renovated. Simple beauty with very high ceilings and a touch of Wes Anderson.
The owner family are truely heartfelt, caring people and staying at Roma felt like a gentle family gathering.
Breakfast is simple and continental, though we would have preferred Egyptian humus and bread. Three lovely cats live in the hotel and make the living room even cosier.
The location is perfectly downtown with many sightseeing option in walking distance.
Highly recommended! I personnally would prefer a local Egyptian breakfast instead of continental.
- Vincent (9/5): Au cœur du Caire ! - Ambiance rétro ! Petit déjeuner à améliorer…
- Dominique (8/5): Bien.
- Niko (1/5): Didn’t stay there since we had a miserable first night - The building is beautiful inside but not in good condition
Room was cold and ac didn’t really work to warm up also no covers on the blankets and they were dirty
Towels were dirty as well
Mattress was very thin so it was impossible to sleep in we ended up checking out after one night and going to a different hotel The building is beautiful inside but not in good condition

- Hilde (9/5): Home away from home - I visited the pensione a couple of times 25-23 years ago. The place remains unchanged. Its a beautiful beacon of authenticity and oldy worldly charm. For us its a home away from home. Staff are the best, great spacious rooms, excellent location downtown.
Nothing better! I dont care the shower tap is difficult to navigate and Breakfast is the same everyday. It is home.
And for Cairo this is the only place we would stay.
We hope to be back with you next year, inshallah!
Kindest regards, Gurbe and Hilde
- Max Frew (6/5): - There is a certain 'old world charm' about the place. And it's relatively comfortable. To my mind 2 single beds pushed together doesn't constitute a double bed. Wifi isn't really available in the room (unless you stand next to the door). I stayed at Pension Roma in 2016 and the breakfast is the same.
- Catherine (7/5): -
- Cecile (5/5): - Emplacement central pratique.
- Jane (8/5): Excellent - Staff very courteous at all times. Very quiet calm atmosphere. Super clean bathrooms. Breakfast sadly. Gone are the days when people eat sweet buns and jam. Would be nice to have egyptian bread and turkish coffee.

Also duschten wir kalt.

- marianne (9/5): An authentic place in Cairo - It was my 4th stay in this hotel and it was very good like the previous times. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the location downtown is excellent and the atmosphere is very pleasant.
I definitely recommend Pension Roma !

- Theresa (7/5): Affordable accommodation in Downtown Cairo with extremely lovely staff! - A traditional hotel in bustling Downtown Cairo, with very welcoming and accommodating staff. They were quite lovely and gave many great recommendations. It was extremely affordable, including a small breakfast of tea/coffee and bread with cheese, eggs, and cookies. I stayed in a room without an ensuite bathroom and toilet. There was only a ceiling fan, so it was quite hot during the height of summer. Also, the noise of traffic and people outside could be heard constantly. If you come during colder months and do not mind hearing the hustle and bustle of Cairo’s streets, then this is a very good option.

- Piccolo (10/5): -
- Massimiliano (8/5): -

- Steve (10/5): Cosy, beautiful, warm welcoming and friendly staff! - Everything!
The hotel was very central, the room beautiful, the staff absolutely lovely and caring. I totally recommend pension Roma to anyone that wants to have a good rest surrounded by a good energy in Cairo . Thanx to the boss for lovely talks too :) I loved everything!
- Abderrahmane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matt (8/5): A good, cheap option for accommodation in downtown Cairo - A great little hotel right in downtown Cairo - that maintains a feel of being transported back to the mid 1900s. The rooms are fairly basic - some have shared bathrooms - but it's clean and atmospheric and the staff are very friendly. It was good, budget-friendly option for a 3 day stay with our young child. The breakfast is not really worth getting out of bed for - you'd be better off heading outside and finding somewhere serving ful and falafel!
- Thimios (9/5): Superb - Very kind and polite people, perfect location, nice vibe.
- Lucie (6/5): Old world charm - A traditional pension with old world charm and a very reasonable price tag for a family of 5.
A basic room with everything you need.
Lovely staff.
Great location.
Fab wooden lift to access pension on 4th/5th floors. Breakfast was a bit too basic for us (rolls, jam, cheese).
Rooms were not very soundproof and had a few mosquitoes so ear plugs and mosi spray was a must.
- Joyce (7/5): Meh. - Staff was great! Decent location. Outside noise was terrible! Had 50 bites - probably mosquitos, but??
- Jan (7/5): Good - Very noisy from street. No WiFi in room. But nice room very central.
- Abdelmonem (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wildeman (8/5): A joy to be back at Pension Roma with such kind staff and always meeting interesting fellow guests - Breakfast was fine Egyptian style, good coffee!
- Sedef (10/5): Pension Rome - A hidden gem in Cairo - Our stay at Pension Roma was absolutely wonderful! Unlike a traditional hotel, it occupies only two floors of a larger building—something we found to be quite common in Egypt.
Exceptional Service & Atmosphere
Out of the six different accommodations we stayed at during our two-week trip across Egypt, Pension Roma was our favorite. The service was exceptional, setting a new standard for hospitality. The staff was always polite, attentive, and ready to assist with anything we needed.
The hotel has a charming colonial-style living room, which added a nostalgic touch to our experience. It was a cozy space where guests could relax, and the staff was more than happy to serve whatever we needed.
Rooms & Comfort
Our room had a unique layout with an entrance area leading into the main space. It was spacious enough for three friends to stay comfortably, and the small balcony overlooking the street was a lovely addition.
Breakfast & Amenities
The included breakfast was simple yet sufficient—a hot beverage of choice, sweetish bread, cream cheese, and jam. While it wasn’t a full meal, the warm hospitality made up for it.
On our last day, the building’s elevator broke down (unrelated to the hotel), but the staff kindly offered to help us with our luggage, which we really appreciated.
Location – Perfect for Exploring Cairo
The location is fantastic—just a short walk from the Egyptian Museum (the old one, not the new one in Giza) and only 10 minutes from Tahrir Square, the heart of the city. It was an ideal base for exploring central Cairo.
Final Thoughts
We truly loved our time at Pension Roma and even asked for their contact cards for future stays. If you’re looking for a charming, well-located, and hospitable stay in Cairo, we highly recommend it!Bonus Tip: If you stay here, check out Stephenson’s Pharmacy down the street! It’s a vintage pharmacy selling modern medicine alongside their own blends of oils, perfumes, and remedies—a unique find worth visiting.
- Hamada (2/5): Very poor - Noisy, no water
- Hamada (2/5): Very poor - The style Very noisy and no water in the shower
- Stan (8/5): Very good - The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and really made us feel at home. The beds are very hard which required some getting used to. Rooms on the street side are also very noisy, but the staff will try to accommodate you if you want to switch.
- Nadia (10/5): I had a fantastic stay and would go back to pension Roma if back in Cairo! - It’s retro style, how friendly the staff was, the excellent location, nice breakfast The bathroom was a bit old but still working.
- Nadia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (8/5): Great, a good place to be connected with the city - Pension Roma offers a good value for money balance. Staff and location are great
- James (10/5): Great place to stay in Cairo - Great place to stay in Cairo Shower could be better
- Johan (6/5): Pleasant - Good location, nice building and classic vibe. Friendly and helpful staff. And you get what you pay for. To small and few towels (no problem to get extra towels on request though). Little dirty and the bathroom would need a refresh.
- Ignacio (8/5): A charming place in the middle of Cairo's Downtown - It is very well located in Downtown Cairo. There are many restaurants, shops and cafes around. The hotel is in a very busy street which is great to see Cairo's daily life. The room was quiet enough for the location. The room had a nice balcony with great views of Cairo's Downtown. The hotel is very close to the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir Square. It is in walking distance form Ramsis Station and Old Cairo.
The hotel has quite some charm, you feel like you are back in the 1930s. The breakfast was nice. The room was a bit dark and the shower overflowed a bit (I guess it'll be fixed very soon).
- Biruta (10/5): Wonderful affordable, central accomodation. - Relaxed, calm place to stay with immaculate bedding. Kind staff. Stay too short.
- Andrea (6/5): You could do better, you know! - Location is good and staff is really gentle. They ask for make up the room, give us the breakfast at 7am (1 hour before the standard time) and set up for us an expensive but efficient taxi to the airport.
We didn't manage to turn on the heating system but it wasn't so cold. it's not possible that we have to ask for hot water for shower
once the hot water arrive it was impossible to maintain it constant, so it comes 10 seconds really hot and 20 seconds really cold.
WIFI dind't ever work!
No hair dryer in the room: we ask for it, but at the reception they said they don't have any. So we have to buy one.
Reception is on 4th floor and room on 5th, with open door all day long as per building main door: probably nothing happens, but it feels not so safe.
Breakfast is really poor: long conservation bread, cheese and jam is in my opinion not up to the name of the hotel. Everything more like a simple omelette is by additional fee.
Hotel windows were always closed so no daylight inside. And after that very weak lights inside! Why?
No credit card accepted for omelette, but euro accepted (rest in egyptian pounds)
I booked a 35m2 room and had a smaller one, half size more or less.
- Corinne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mario (8/5): The art of excellent value for money - The privileged location in the historic center of Cairo allows for a radical immersion in the routine of this city, which is one of the largest urban concentrations on the planet. The Roma guesthouse is one of the rare examples of how it is possible to offer affordable accommodation without compromising the quality of the services provided. If I return to Cairo, I will definitely visit the Roma guesthouse again.
- Phileas (6/5): Old-fashioned, atmospheric hotel in a lively district - If you're looking for an atmospheric, old-fashioned hotel in downtown Cairo this is it. It seems as if little has changed since it opened in the 1940s. Breakfast room, smokers' lounge, hallway and reception are refreshingly 'dated'. Sometimes it seems as if Agatha Christie's Miss Marple could walk in any minute. The staff are friendly and helpful with questions and organising trips to the pyramids etc. But the greatest advantage of "Pensione Roma" is its atmosphere which appeals to people who like to travel back in time not just in the museum but also in the choice of their accommodation. It's noisy but that's to be expected in the middle of a very exciting and lively city. The bathrooms could do with a thorough renovation and the wooden floor in our room looked clean but when you walked barefoot on it your feet were quite dark afterwards. Some scrubbing with water wouldn't harm. The breakfast is very basic. The beds were clean but if you're squeamish about 'house guests' you should book somewhere else. I counted some fifty odd bites of unclear origin after the first night. I suppose they were bedbugs, a thought that unsettled me quite a bit and spoilt our return as we had to disinfect our luggage and clothes for fear of importing Egyptian insects to Europe.
- Antonio (9/5): Superb -
- Elsa (5/5): to feel the old fashion cairo atmosphere for short stay - Well located in downtown, with a certain old style charm. The people are nice and speak english perfectly. The room was big, with a sink, a balcony and big wardrobe. Separated toilet from the bathroom is a real plus. The bathroom is shared and outside the room. it was not a problem for us but it was not mentionned. and both bathroom really need a complete refresh/rebuilt because of their disfunctional aspects.
- Scott (9/5): Superb - nice Mosquitos in the room
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Emma (8/5): Great location if you're traveling on a budget. - Very cool colonial style building. Feels like you're stepping back in time when you walk in. Great location in downtown Cairo with lots of restaurants and bars in walking distance. Staff are friendly and don't try any on sell of tours etc. Rooms are very big. Breakfast was very basic and showers could have been better. Wifi only works in some areas.
- Marianne (9/5): Superb - Pension Roma is a great address in downtown Cairo ! The staff is very helpful and friendly. The building has got a lot of character and I love it.
It was my 3rd time and I hope to stay there again.
- Arlyn (8/5): Very good -
- Somicha (10/5): Always great to return to this safe harbor where time stood still - More then 20 years this place is an oasis in the Cairo jungle. The staff is fantastic and so is the vibe of this place The cleaning ladies really should clean the bathrooms too
- Pamela (9/5): Loved my stay at Pension Roma - I loved the classic ambiance of an elegant guest house from a bygone era. I also loved the staff who were so helpful, humorous and friendly. The location was perfect The facilities were well functioning but basic
- Maria (8/5): Very good - Very nice atmosphere, very friendly staff, perfect location, the breakfast could be better!
- David (8/5): atmospheric and friendly place to stay in heart of downtown - breakfast was basic. fruit would have been good, maybe eggs. too hot at night
- Shuang (10/5): Exceptional -
- Miquelaltadillrovira (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elpida (9/5): Superb - This is one of the best places to stay in downtown Cairo. Location is great, rooms are very spacious and the place is very clean according to egyptian standards. It is a place with very special character and architecture. The staff is also lovely and quickly responded to a change we wanted in dates. In general, we were very pleased. Breakfast could be better.
- Maciej (7/5): Stylish time-lapse into the world otherwise already lost - Quiet and stylish place in the central Cairo, which could probably exist in its current form already at the beginning of the 20thc century, of which you are reminded of by the old English style double faucets in sink, one for hot water, one for cold water. You can meet there guests from the world around - Egyptians, Gulf Arabs, Europeans. The personnel is not intrusive unlike in many other places in Egypt. In other words, they don't try to sell you anything. the head manager is both professional, cheerful and friendly, but not TOO friendly; he is always ready to explain some Egyptian custom like paying the agreed price in taxi whatever it is, not just the fair price. Some of the personnel working there (reception, kitchen) arerather grumpy. Tea is not unlimited during breakfast - they charge you 25 Egyptian pounds for the next mug of tea. After the breakfast you will get for free only hot water (well, at least that, even though other Egyptian hotels offered me tea anytime I wished). Breakfast is very standard otherwise - the kind of breakfast I got in two other hotels I visited during my in Egypt: "European" roll of bread, jam, some kind of cheese, an egg.
At the beginning of my stay I had a small single room which was hard to live in due to heat - temperature inside oscillated around 40 C degrees (I had a thermometer) in May despite two fans inside. Later I changed for a larger, spacious room which was more bearable. Nevertheless, they don't seem to have air conditioned single rooms.
- Dipti (10/5): Amazing - The rooms are very clean and well maintained. It is located on the heart of Cairo All was good
- Eung (9/5): Back into old days - Good location, professional staff & special atmosphere Facility is bit old and renovations would upgrade hotel’s reputation
- Sau (8/5): Very good -
- Richard (9/5): Fin de Siècle Hospitality in Contemporary Cairo - This is my go-to place in central Cairo. I've stayed here on three separate occasions. I wouldn't stay anywhere else. The place exudes charm and eccentricity. It's locked in a sort of 1940s time-warp - the kind of place my grandparents would've recognised - with dark wood panelled corridors, spacious rooms with ceiling fans furnished in brown and beige, aging liveried house staff floating about, a dining room full of the echoes of past voices and laughter. The general manager is a particularly pleasant fellow lending the place a venerable air. It's in a good central downtown location within quick walking distance of the 'hub' metro at Attaba, and only a 15 minute walk from Ramses train station. The included breakfast is fine and filling - the cold boiled egg is an inspired touch! They were good enough to look after my luggage when I disappeared for a few weeks. When I returned the manager welcomed me 'home' - they don't do hospitality like this anymore! The rooms I stayed in were all over or near Mohammed Farid and therefore tremendously noisy as the old windows and shutters do not shut properly/fully. At times, it felt like staying on a traffic island. Having said that, I believe this is part of the character and eccentricity of the place; I quickly got used to it. Rooms are 'serviced' daily, even over a short stay, which is rare in mid-level hotels in Egypt. However, this only extends to making the bed and emptying the bin; (ancient) dust and dirt resides elsewhere. The shared bathrooms could also do with a more enthusiastic clean now and again. The long-term French guest on the 5th floor has verbal diarrhea who is liable to subject you to a seamless and relentless monologue over breakfast if you're not careful. She'll tell you she's writing a book on the hotel and its guests but since she doesn't pause to listen I doubt it will be any good.
- Dipti (10/5): Peaceful and Comfortable - This is a nice old building with lovely antique atmosphere. It has a homely feel. It is very lovely. Nothing. Very happy with the premises and had a wonderful stay here. Looking forward to be back here.
- Isabel (8/5): Hotel with wonderful atmosphere in Downtown - Nice hotel in Downtown with a wonderful athmosphere. The room was big and comfortable. The hotel has a beautiful living room. I was sitting every morning here and drunk my coffee. A wonderful start in the day.
The area around is busy, lots of shops and some nice cafes and restaurants.
Its a good area to stay in cairo and metrostation near by.
Very friendly staff in the hotel. Thank you for everything.
- Omar (8/5): Very good -
- Benjamin (9/5): Superb -
- Albert (8/5): Very comfortable and great service. - Very clean and very quiet. Very helpfull and friendly staff. Nothing really.
- Amani (10/5): Exceptional - The most decent place we stayed in Egypt. The opposite of the scammers that lure Cairo. Old but in a very good condition. The sourrounding neighbor is typical of the city center. No fancy stuff, no misleading pictures, no promotion for excursions.
- Xavier (10/5): Perfect dtay - Well kept and friendly
- Sara (8/5): Very good - I loved the building, the location, the breakfast room and the staff.
A little noisy because of Iftar, but my parents had a back room and it was very quiet / and it isn't much more in terms of price!
- Anette (10/5): Like coming home ! - Every time I am in Cairo I stay here. I have stayed here more than 10 times!!! It should be recommendations enough! I love the old charming vintage style and all the staff is very friendly and helpful. Especially Ezzat in the reception is a gold mine of information and help. Everything is fine.
