- Barbara (10/5): Comfortably at home. - Very extraordinary and comfortable. I loved the location. If you don’t like crowds, this is the area for you. It was just the perfect distance from everything and easy to get to by public bus. Hong was wonderful and provided tea, coffee or juice in the morning and always some variety of fruit. She had great restaurant recommendations. Always so helpful and flexible when possible and easy to communicate. I know that there are a lot of stairs (depending on the room that you’re in) so that might be a reason why someone cannot stay here. However, this is also very typical Vietnamese. Also because it is a bedroom on each floor, I felt like I had a lot of privacy. Nothing.

- Rebecca (10/5): Welcoming & comfortable eclectic Homestay - The eclectic decor & the lovely hostess! We also loved the area, being more quiet than the Old Quarter but lots of food & coffee around. It’s a nice 30 min walk to get to know Hanoi to head to the Old Quarter. The hostess made us coffee & cut fruit for us every morning & made us delicious lemonade when we arrived & when we got back (you have to let her know when you’re coming home to receive the lemonade though!)
She provides a list of places to visit and food to eat.

- Sinead (10/5): - The lady who owns it was so lovely, hospitable and thoughtful. The room was very big. The location was really good. It was ok for us but just to be aware there was no elevator.
- catherine (10/5): A little spot of calm and wonderfulness in busy Hanoi. - Tonkin Homestay is an amazing gem of a place. Hong, our hostest, is wonderfully kind, thoughtful, fun and so helpful. She made our time in Hanoi extra special. The building is incredible. At least 6 floors of artful decorations and personal touches make you feel like you are visiting a collector's special place. The location is convenient to shops, yummy restaurants and small grocery stores and pharmacies. After a busy day of exploring and navigating the busy streets of Hanoi it was so relaxing to return to the quiet oasis called Tonkin Homestay. You need to stay here! There wasn't much if anything to find fault with the Tonkin Homestay. I guess it could be a difficult place to stay if you need an elevator and can't climb stairs.

- Kahrıman (10/5): Amazing, must stay there - The owner was so cuteee, she offered us tea and coffee every time she see us. The house is amazing, details and colors are fascinating. This was our best homestay, thank you for everything. Nothing
- Lien (10/5): -
- Nora (10/5): - Un homestay absolument exceptionnel !

- Jesse (10/5): - Very very sweet owner, near a big Street but quiet nonetheless, Clean aswell
- J. (10/5): Lovely place! - This Homestay was the most special and lovely experience I ever made while travelling. You have to privilege to live with a Vietnamese family in a beautiful, artistic house. I loved everything. The hostess is so kind and welcoming, I felt so comfortable.
It is quiet, the room is beautiful and big and I loved the location. You can see real Vietnamese life in the neighborhood and have a lot of restaurants and cafes. I’m already looking forward to come back!
- Gudrun (10/5): - The landlady was extremly friendly. Our bus was late by more than one hour, so we checked in at 11:30pm. Nevertheless she gave us a very warm welcome. Next day we got a brilliant good-mornung coffee, a laundry srvice, and even our shoes were brushed. However, what made it so special was the design of our room. All designed by her, one can see that we've landed in an artist's home. Her father's paintings can be seen in the National Museum of Fine Arts.
- Ngân (10/5): - Phòng rộng, thoáng, decor rất đẹp
Cô Hồng rất dễ thương, nhiệt tình
- Zámečník (10/5): lovely place with lovely hosts -
- Alexandre (6/5): Perfect for a short stay but less suitable for a long stay - The guesthouse has an excellent location – right in the city center yet not in a touristy area, which makes it very pleasant and authentic. The decoration of the room and the whole guesthouse is tasteful and unique. Everything was spotless and very well maintained. The host was also extremely kind and welcoming. We didn’t feel entirely comfortable using the shared kitchen during our stay. The cost of a single laundry run (180,000 VND - 6€) felt quite high for Vietnam and was not mentioned in the Booking.com listing. For a one-month stay, we were offered the room at €600, which is much above local market prices. Over a longer stay, the decoration might feel a little busy due to the many objects and ornaments.

- Van (10/5): Very sweet host in a wonderfull house with lots to see :-) -
- Francesca (10/5): Hidden gem in Hanoi center - The host is super cute and friendly, she prepared to us coffee in the morning and lemonade in the afternoon, and helped us booking a cheaper transfer from city center to the airport. Slightly 'far' from the most trafficated and lively part of the city.
- Diana (10/5): Everything worth the stay! - Everything was perfect!
Clean, organized and the house is a beautiful museum with every detail and decoration. The owner is such a sweet person, kind and attentive. She will do everything to feel at home. ☺️
- Akemi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Faran (10/5): Amazing place - The most pleasant and caring hostess in all of Hanoi. You won't find such a pleasant and better accommodation. Such a kind-hearted Om, the owner of the place, is pleasant and there is a kitchen and also WiFi in every room.
- Madison (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place, super nice lady. Hot water, comfortable bed and really beautifully decorated house. She let us check in early and never rushed us to check out. So nice we stayed there twice! Incredible, do not hesitate to book. Please be kind to the lovely woman who owns the hotel, she is a real angel.
- Pamela (10/5): I loved Tonkin Homestay - Such a pleasant stay 😍. I have been litteraly spoiled by the host, a lovely, cheerful, friendly lady that has taken so much care about me. The area is absolutely perfect for visiting Hanoi avoiding the crowded old town. The room is clean and colorful, you feel warmly welcomed since you step in. I look forward to staying there again 🥰
- Khalid (10/5): Exceptional -
- Huyen (9/5): Superb -
- Celia (10/5): Exceptional - We had an amazing time at Tonkin Homestay. It felt like home immediately and Hong took such a good care of us. She is such a lovely person and her house is very special and everything is so detailed. We can truly recommend staying here if you want to have a unique and memorable experience!
- Isabella (10/5): The owner here is an amazing woman. She is SO kind and generous. We loved our stay. Thank you!!!! -
- Martin (10/5): We felt so welcome—great location, super clean, and Hong took amazing care of us with delicious breakfasts! - Everything was clean and well-prepared, and the location was perfect. Hong was amazing—she made us coffee and breakfast every day and even washed and folded our clothes. Some might find the bed a bit hard, but for us, it was fine. Huge thanks for everything!
- Valentin (10/5): Home sweet home! - Home sweet home! The perfect place to stay in Hanoi. Hong and her husband really went the extra mile to make me feel looked after and cared for, especially when I had back pain during the trip. Hong often prepared fruit, hot drinks or soups for me when I left my room and took the time to have a conversation with me. She's such a warm-hearted, kind and wonderful person! As a solo traveller staying here made Hanoi feel more like a home than a strange city. The room was excellent too: so much character, beautiful collectables and paintings. Lastly, the neighbourhood is also great: it feels much more authentic Vietnamese and real than the Old Quarter, which has so many tourists and is quite commercialised in my opinion - don't be put off that Tonkin Homestay is not in the centre, it's a hidden gem. It also has great food spots and shops nearby. Make sure to try Phở Gà Bà Lộc ( Phở gà 18 ) right infront of the house. Lastly, my flight got cancelled and Hong sorted me with a last minute room, which was really kind of her!
- Ukjohn (10/5): A wonderful Homestay Experience in a Vibrant Area of Hanoi - A very homely and comfortable stay in an authentic Hanoi area. The host is such a lovely kind and thoughtful woman and does everything to make your stay perfect. It really does feel like home and located in such a vibrant local area but still close enough to walk to Hoan Kiem and the Old Quarter. Even better have a walk to Thong Nhat park and experience a real Hanoi local park. I know Hanoi very well and this is a great location for a first timer who wants to be where the tourists are but at the same time experience the real Hanoi. nothing
- Rachel (10/5): Comfortable stay in a lovely home with exceptional host. wonderful price - Wonderful, friendly and kind host. She went out of her way to help us. The home has lovely art and decorations.
- Susan (10/5): Lovely host and accommodation - Hong is a very lovely host, so warm and helpful and with good English. She made us drinks in the morning and ginger tea for me when I was ill. She even made us lunch one day! She loves to interact with her guests.
The rooms are big, comfortable and clean, full of great art and curios.
The Homestay is 20-30 minutes walk to the old quarter but it is an interesting walk so I wouldn’t count it as a negative and a grab would be only a couple of dollars. It’s definitely quieter than the more central areas but you can still hear traffic at night. I think you’d have to be virtually outside of Hanoi to not hear that. The local area is great. We found it very friendly, lots of cafes and street food full of Vietnamese not tourists
- Madelaine (10/5): Exceptional - Such a gorgeous place to stay and the host was amazing! I would stay here again and again, it made Hanoi feel like home
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ladislav (8/5): Very good - Cozy homestay in a less busy part of Hanoi. Super friendly host, accommodated us arriving late and let us keep the bags there before our flight back home. There's a delicious pho literally next door. Shower was hot and good water pressure. The beds are on the hard side, even for Vietnam.
- Jan-niklas (10/5): Great room and amazing host - The room was very clean and the host was amazing. We got freshly cut fruit and tea every morning and she insisted on cooking us a Vietnamese meal.
When we left, we also got homemade cake to take with us. You can hear the traffic from the street, but it gets rather quiet at night.
The room doesn't come with a washing machine and dryer as advertised, but with a washing service which is cheap at 130k per wash.
- Sean (10/5): Exceptional - Hong has a beautiful home quietly tucked away in a very central location of Hanoi. My stay at Tonkin homestay was pleasant and cozy!
Thank you Hong!
- Carolina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nestor (10/5): Very good homestay and perfect host - The place is beautiful, has a pretty and cozy decoration. The host is incredibly kind and helpful. It has all the facilities that can be needed. The place is really clean and wifi works very well. I totally recommend it. Nothing
- Katherine (9/5): Superb -
- Joseph (10/5): Wonderful host in an eccentric home - The place was so well decorated with things from all over the world. Hong was so attentive, bringing me drinks and fruit all day and sitting with me for breakfast each day. It was great to get to know her.
- Hector (10/5): A true homestay experience in Hanoi - The host Om, is such a sweet, caring and loving person.
She lent me a warm jacket and a scarf, as I wasn't prepared for such cold weather in Hanoi. Besides she'd always be offering hot drinks and fresh fruit to us.
The house is very quirky and full of character, and the room is very spacious and comfortable.
The neighbourhood is nice, lots of cafes and restaurants around, approximately 30min walk to many areas of interest such as the old quarter or the HCM complexe.
Highly recommended.
- Albert (10/5): Exceptional - Incredible host, thank you for the sweet potato, cassava, fruit and tea!
Great location, really beautiful decor.
- Jessica (9/5): Tonkin Homestay is a special and unique experience. Her kindness and hospitality will make it hard to leave. - Mrs. Hong’s family home is beautiful! And like other reviews mentioned very much feels like an art gallery. She was a very kind and hospitable host. Every morning she served us coffee, fruit and a Vietnamese breakfast dish. She was always available to answer questions and helped us find a driver to the airport. The wi-if worked great and the beds were comfortable. There are several stairs which could be an issue with heavy luggage but we had only backpacks. Our family enjoyed getting to know her and felt honored that she shared her home with us! Unfortunately, we stayed during one of the coldest weeks of the winter and most homes, including Mrs. Hong’s, do not have central heating so it was very cold inside the house. She did provide us with plenty of blankets to keep warm at night. It is a good 30 minute walk to most of the sites, which I was aware of when I booked, but the cold weather made the walk less enjoyable and calling a Grab wasn’t always convenient because the traffic around the city was so bad. Mrs. Hong does offer to do your laundry for 130,000 Dong/Kg. That felt very high so we took our laundry to WorldWash (25,000 Dong/Kg).
- Jiajun (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kichka (10/5): Favourite place in Hanoi - Everything! The room was spacious with a little balcony. It is very close to delicious food, supermarket, museums and many things tourist would like to see! The house is museum by itself, it is very artistic and full of interesting things to see! The host is very, very kind and helpful! Everything was excellent!
- Stuart (10/5): Exceptional - Everything! The house itself was beautiful, unique and in a great location, close to the Old Quarter but, in my opinion, in a much nicer part of Hanoi. We were made to feel completely at home by Hong who treated us like family! She made us a different Vietnamese dish for breakfast every day, as well as coffee and fruit. The room was spacious and clean with a nice balcony. Although the bathroom was separate from the room, it was right next to it so it felt private. Overall, this was a perfect stay in a unique Homestay. We highly recommend!
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly and colourful and very friendly host! We got a mango, water melon, tea and coffee!
- Karolis (10/5): Exceptional - It was one of most amazing experience in Vietnam! The host was so incredible and warm that I felt like at home with my own family. Ms Hong speaks english so it was very interesting to hear more about locals lives. The hause was decorated by her beloved husband who is architectur, so the vibe of the house feels like art galary. Ms. Hong and her huband Mr. Binh are verry friedly, teated us with homemade vietnamiese coffee and tea. I and my wife hope that our friendship with this lovely hosts will last in the future.
- Kim (9/5): Art, cozy, warm, quiet - This place is like a small musemum that will take your breath with every step. We was welcomed with great stories from host. It is not so far from the Ho Guom lake and Hanoi acient town, so the price is such a great benefit
- Edoardo (10/5): The very best stay in Hanoi - We loved everything during our stay! Cozy, comfortable and quiet house. The room was spacious, clean and provided with AC and private bathroom.
The very best about this stay is the house owner who is very kind, gentle friendly and flexible with check in and check out. She provided us lemonade, tea, coffee and fresh fruit Nothing
- Edoardo (10/5): The best stay in Hanoi - We loved everything during our stay in Hanoi! The house was very cozy and the owner was super kind, friendly and flexible with us. She prepared us lemonade, tea and coffe every day and gave us also fresh fruit.
The room was spacious and clean with AC and private bathroom.
The house was also very quiet even if located in the city center at walking distance to a lot of restaurants and bar and not far from main attractions. Nothing
- Nicole (10/5): Exceptional -
- Neirin (10/5): Wonderful place full of character and nice touches, a more authentic taste of Hanoi - We had a lovely time at Tonkin Homestay, the lady who ran the place was super freindly and helpful. She made us tea and we chatted about the lovely decorations in the place which all have a story. As you can see in the pictures the design of the homestay is really unique and beautiful. It felt homely but we also had our privacy and needed rest from the hectic streets of Hanoi. The location is great if you want to avoid the touristic Old Quarter and get a little taste of local life. There was still a great selection of cafes and restaurants nearby to choose from and the old quarter is a short taxi ride away too. The nearby lake is also very beautiful and worth a visit.
- Adi (10/5): Exceptional - everything perfect. and the owner is so sweet and humble. the best accomodation in our 3 months adventure in Asia. we will come back here for sure if we visit Vietnam again.
- Prakriti (10/5): would definitely recommend this Homestay to anyone looking to stay in Hanoi - it was very nice staying here, the owner is very sweet and goes the extra mile to help you. we stayed for very long and felt like at home. She provided everything that we needed and more. The location was very quite and away from the busy streets of Hanoi but not too far away. N/A
- Codie (10/5): Exceptional - The kindest lady you will meet! So helpful and goes above and beyond to make your stay comfortable!
Lots of great food and shops nearby and about 30k for a grab to the Old Quarter.
Large homey room with desk and fridge, locked courtyard, so great if you are on a motorbike.
Would definitely recommend ❤️
- Lucy (10/5): hidden gem - I only planned to stay for one night, but extended and stayed for two. The accommodation was so beautiful and the host Hong was so caring and thoughtful. After travelling for 8 weeks arriving at Tonkin Homestay gave a feeling of being at home :)
This place and Hong are hidden gems of Vietnam!
Other parts: my room had lots of amenities including bathroom on same floor, AC, fan, fridge, desk and lots of clothes storage, small balcony and good wifi. The bed itself was larger, perhaps firmer than what I’m normally used to but came with plenty of blankets and pillows. The home has lots of stairs which was fine for me but anyone who struggles with stairs might need to double check this as there is no lift.
As a solo female traveller I felt safe in this neighbourhood and often walked in daytime and at dark to nearby cafes, atm’s or street food stalls trying lots of local food. There is a small convenience shop across the road and the chicken noodles next door also come recommended (the women working there also very lovely).
The water puppet theatre is around 20minute walk at pace and old quarter a little further which I mostly got grab bikes to. Tip for others: There is a quieter train street nearer to central circus (behind Fuji super mart about 6mins south of the homestay) which has more frequent trains and far fewer tourists and good coffee shops.
All in all I would highly recommend Tonkin Homestay and hope to return one day soon! :) bed a little firmer than what I’m used to, but all the other pro’s about this place outweighed this part for me. hence staying a second night
- Han (10/5): A stay that really feels like home ạ I will definitely come back. -
- Agata (10/5): Amazing place in the heart of Hanoi - Wonderful place to stay! The owner is such a lovely, friendly person, sharing her amazing house an heart with us! Although it is located in the centre of Old Quarter, it is peacefully quiet there. We have been invited with fresh fruits and beautiful smile, welcomed like being part of the family. There is no better place to stay in Hanoi!
- Jack (10/5): It feels like home. - Everything. 5 weeks of cycling the coast of Vietnam ended here and it was the most perfect ending. The coolest house, an attraction in itself (you can spend hours just looking at all the cool stuff that adorn the walls)
But the family are what make it so special, so caring, considerate and warm. It just felt like home immediately!! That I couldn't stay longer
- Mario (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dylan (10/5): I loved this homestay so much, the host Huong was the kindest host I have ever met whilst travelling, she was very helpf - The homestay is a very cosy and comfortable place, hot shower, tea / coffee and breakfast provided by the host, very clean and in a good location.
- Feanor (9/5): Homey, artistic home run by sweet family - The owner is a very kind, sweet woman, she will make you tea and do everything she can to make you feel at home. The private bathroom is separate from your room so you have to leave room to use it. There is also both a door and a gate to lock whenever coming and going which can be inconvenient.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - Hong and Binh are the most wonderful and thoughtful people. I really enjoyed my stay at there beautiful ho
use. Thank you both!!!! 😊😊
- Luc (10/5): Exceptional - i normally don’t write reviews, but i was very happy with my stay. The hosts of the Tonkin homestay are incredibly nice and kind people. The house and room are decorated very cosy and homely, and there was hot water in the shower. I definitely recommend this homestay if you don’t mind being a bit outside the city old quarter (and you do have there a lot of restaurants nearby).
- Nicole (9/5): the owner is very friendly and helpful. - it’s clean and tidy
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful homestay. The couple hosting were so friendly and made me feel really at home. Great place O
- Tayyib (8/5): Decent stay - Very nice decorated home, hot water and beds were reasonably comfortable Quite expensive for what it is
- Ron (9/5): Superb -
