Guest Reviews
- Raewyn (9/5): Authentic - Authentic Australian country farming experience.
Wonderful hospitality shown by hosts Richard and Cally. Especially the delicious dinner experience.
- Brian (8/5): Excellent farm stay experience - Amazing farm stay experience. Lots of animals to interact with. This place is perfect for that escape from the city life and allows you to sit back and enjoy some quality time away from it all. We stayed in the Shearers' quarters and the messroom is well equipped to cook up 3 meals a day if you wish. The open fire place is the perfect way to spend the evening and gives you the opportunity to connect with other guests. The host Cally is very knowledgeable has some great tips and recommendations for taking in and enjoying food and local attractions to the area. Star gazers dream of a night. Was a little.confusing making the booking through Booking.com in regards to our room and whether it had an ensuite or not. Although it ended up being just across the hall opposite our room, it is well equipped with everything you need and more.
- Julie (10/5): Rathmore is a fantastic Tassie rural farm experience. Wildlife, farm animals and wonderful warm hospitality from the own - Rathmore is a wonderful /authentic rural experience! We stayed in the shearers quarters with warm comfy beds, spacious bathroom and a well equipped kitchen .Highlights included meeting the owners to feel valued as guests and learn about the property. Dinner in the homestead was fantastic as was rowing in the lake while a platypus swam around our boat. Nothing
- Huang (10/5): Cally was incredibly warm and took the time to introduce everything to us. This has truly been a memorable stay for our - We are two adults traveling with a 14M old baby, and Cally kindly upgraded us to a private room so we could stay more comfortably. The building has preserved its original charm while still being very clean. The farm is huge, and our child could run around safely and freely. Nothing
- Fran (10/5): Magical time seeing the elusive mystical platypus ❤️ - Wonderful place to tick off the elusive mystical platypus as they have 5 in their Riverlet. Added bonus was the Aurora Australis we were treated to over 2 nights. The shared kitchen was a bonus. Cally and John will even cook you a meal if booked in advance. Farm animals for the kids, lots of different sheds to enjoy the view and the wildlife.
It’s just out of Bothwell which has one of the oldest and most comprehensive golf history museums. You can even play a round of golf at Ratho Farms Bothwell Golf Course the oldest in Australia. Nothing not to like it’s a historical property that is exceptionally well maintained.
- Eleanor (8/5): Great hosts, very good accommodation, most enjoyable stay. - Very clean and well appointed room with excellent ensuite
A good comfortable bed and pillows
Everything you could think of in the communal kitchen to assist us with self catering.
Interesting Historic property and woolshed.
Sighted platypus in the rivulet Maybe a chair in the bedroom instead the small valet piece of furniture
Would have liked to see more of the grass cut around the shearer's quarters and woolshed and a better walking track around the rivulet slashed to help us navigate the area more easily on foot.
- Gary (8/5): Fine for a couple of nights stay. - Very quite. Bed comfortable. Sharing a kitchen. I was fine with it but hubby didn’t like it. Very remote
- john (7/5): -
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Hosts were excellent & very friendly. Rathmore is a charming venue, with a lot of history. I have bad hips a ramp would have been very helpful, instead of steps. But not a major problem just took a little longer getting up.
- Pam (8/5): A taste of real country life with a tranquil ambiance - It was tranquil and as we were the only guests at the time, it was peaceful and had everything we required Everything was great so no complaints
- Pike (10/5): Perfect place to stay while exploring the area. - A lovely historic cottage in a peaceful rural setting within easy reach of local towns and the Mount field National Park.
- Chris Putnam (10/5): - Beautiful place and wonderful landscape. The lamb ragu I had was one of the tastiest meals I've eaten. Not even joking.
- Jessica (8/5): a great peaceful retreat back in time - it was clean and very comfortable, the property owner went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed and also, advised us to bring food and where the best places to purchase supplies as not located close to town. The horse and pony were beautiful additions that won over the kids hearts nothing
- Andrey (10/5): -
- ruth (10/5): So relaxing, comfortable and welcoming. - This place is a gem. My son and I stayed here for 3 nights. We felt so welcomed by the owners. The facilities where incredible considering how remote the accommodation is. It was like stepping back in time but with 5 star rating. The animals on the farm where a highlight abs looking for the platypus in the dam was so much fun.
- Anya (7/5): Budget stay - Budget cheap stay, so you get what you pay for. 4 to a room and there is a surprisingly large amount of space to put your stuff. Location is convenient to Freycinet (an hour drive) and Maria island (40 minute drive to the ferry). A bit far for Bay of Fire (about 2 hours drive).
Wifi is fast, but it is only in the common area. Common area is plenty large to find a quiet corner, but it is a hostel.
The staff were nice and trying to take care of the property.
Tons of kitchen supplies.
Mostly younger folks but there were a few older ones as well. The space out back is for camping. The entire place could use some TLC - but then again if that happened then it would be much more expensive.
Other guests didn't really respect the rules, particularly about the kitchen. Fridge space was at a premium.
Wifi is only in the common area. Door to open the room was squeaky so I felt bad every time I opened or closed it if someone was sleeping. The bunks were also squeaky.
- Ross (10/5): An idyllic stopover - A fabulous place, ideally located and with excellent facilities The majority of resources advertised (kitchen, washing machine etc.) were shared with the whole property
- Manu (10/5): - Beautiful place hosted by cally. Wonderful stay. Must do experience Distance from Hobart is slightly more
- Elisabeth (9/5): I was so grateful to Callie who help me as I was sick one day. Gave us lots of support. She was a very attentive host. - Beautiful surroundings , quiet and we even saw some platitudes. Lots of history on this property
- Luci (10/5): Thank you to Cally for being an amazing host! We had the best time - Had an amazing experience. Here are some highlights!
- Platypus!!
- Horses, bull, chickens & ducks
- Quiet location
- Close to National Park & Berry picking
- Gorgeous views
- Popke (8/5): - Beautiful location on a historical site well within reach of a number of national parks. Good value for money Although we are certainly happy with the room, late arrivals did keep us awake. But then again: if you want a perfect stay.. take a room in the Hilton. Will coast you a bi more !
- William (9/5): -
- Burke (10/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): Quel bonheur! - Tout était parfait!!! Le séjour est superbe. La chambre parfaite. Le lieu parfait. Les propriétaires sont très gentils et accueillants.
Merci pour tout.
- Julie (10/5): Beautiful, quiet relaxing location. Perfect for an art retreat - Beautiful, quiet, relaxing location and accommodation. Lots of opportunities for me to do some sketching and explore. Hosts were friendly and welcoming. I'd love to visit again. Perfect place for an art retreat Nothing
- Norman (10/5): - Friendly host the farm was everything i was hopping for as my wife is disabled she was helped in many ways if you need any help just ask and enjoy your stay
- Perry (9/5): - The hostess Cally bent over backwards in every way to make sure we were comfortable. The location was peaceful and relaxing but within easy distance of Mt Field. Platypi in the property's pond were an unexpected bonus: they were not shy and we had a wonderful up close view. Wonderful! The beds squeaked.
- Trang L Phan (10/5): Magnificient Stay! Hercules, Emma, Tim Tam and Glen, we will miss you - We love everything about our stay. Cally and Richard are such an amazing, welcoming and fantastic host with awesome cooking skill. We enjoyed wandering around the property and spending time with Hercules, Emma, Tim Tam and Glen (Rathmore's lovely animals). The valley view drive is so gorgeous.
- james (10/5): An awesome setting and location, with the host doing everything to make our stay memorable. - The location and setting an excellent farm stay environment. Facilities were well thought out and provided everything required for a fantastic stay. The hosts couldn't do enough to make our stay enjoyable and memorable.
Watching the platypus swim around in their natural environment.
- Mary (10/5): Highly recommend a visit. Cally and Richard are so welcoming. - What a beautiful property in a great location with a comfortable country style accommodation.
- james (10/5): - A beauty property.
Hosts went out of their way to please and make our holiday memorable.
Meals that were cooked and provided by the hosts were exceptional.
- Susan (9/5): Tranquil and amazing - We stayed in the Shearer’s quarters, we had a communal kitchen and met some other lovely people from WA. We ordered eweba eats (lamb ragu) from the host for dinner, it was amazing. We also spotted the resident platypus. I would definitely stay here again if visiting from Perth. I will definitely be telling my friends and family about this amazing place. Thank you Cally
- Angela (8/5): Quiet, Warm & Bucketlist Moment - The ability to see playtpus in the wild has been the highlight of our stay!! Plus the family loved the fireplace The electricity would cut out regularly, the kitchen tap was only boiling hot water, and the bathroom sink was slow
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Lah2041 (8/5): Very good -
- Biggles266 (8/5): Very good -
- Marie (9/5): Enjoy this unique experience with access to the delights of this area of Tasmania such as Mt Field national park and Str - Beautiful farm-stay type accomodation.
- Rosemary (8/5): Very pleasant stay. -
- Lyn (9/5): Rathmore is a warm welcoming unique rural place to stay - It Is a rural property with some accommodation set up as though you’re in shearing quarters which is fun (although some people might not like having to socialise in and share the kitchen area).
There are farm animals for kids to feed.
It is well located to visit the Mount Field National Park.
Cally, the host, is generous with her time and knowledge cooking and special home made extra goodies- she really makes it special. Nothing w really enjoyed everything about it
- Dinmari (10/5): Fantastic farmstay - The whole farm stay experience was lovely! Being able to see platypuses up close was a highlight. The homemade dinner, being served at a beautiful set table in an old shed was unforgettable!
We stayed in room 1 (Platypus room), with a huge, full bathroom across the hallway. Call's recommendations what to see and do (even in Hobart) were spoton! Can not fault anything!
- John (10/5): All good will be back. - Location for us was ideal peace and quiet, plenty space and Hercules the Frisian an added bonus.Breakfast with options good choices and you can bring your own as the kitchen has a good range of cooking facilities.
- Les (8/5): really enjoyed our stay as a whole - the setting of the accommodation was great, staff very friendly and helpful and beds comfortable could have another couch and a proper table to sit at, we were glad as 1 night we had living area to ourselves, 2nd night shared with a lovely couple
- Murray (7/5): A comfortable Farm Stay. - Platypus on the dam. Plunger coffee and a well appointed shared kitchen. Having to share the kitchen and fridge. Biting insects in the room.
- Jaime (10/5): A great relaxing time - The rooms and bathroom were great, very clean and comfortable. There's a communal kitchen to make full use of in the sheerers quarters.
The hosts made sure to communicate fully on how the property runs and checked in with me to make sure I didn't need anything.
There are a couple of horses, lambs, and a giant Bullock to make friends with as well as a dam with resident platypus. It is a little out of the way, there's no issue getting to the property but if you forget something it's a bit of a drive to go and get it. Make sure you've stocked up as there is no quick run to the corner store for some snacks.
- Peter (2/5): Dreadful. Misleading marketing - Rural outlook. Sold as a nice B & B not a backpacker lodging
- Jayne (8/5): Very good - Perfect facilities for our group. Loved the platypus spotting in the tinny. Great dinner delivered.
- Farrawell (6/5): Pleasant - Very nice bathroom, friendly staff. Well stocked breakfast. Bed was uncomfortable. Wifi lacked range. Fire alarm too sensitive (guest next room to me set it off twice at night when they smoked outside on the porch.)
- Andy (8/5): A great stay in a historic house in the rural Tassie with fantastic hosts! - The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. The rural setting was great. A good selection for breakfast.
- Francis (9/5): Central Highlands Gem. - Well firstly we got upgraded to a bigger cottage which was excellent.
Peaceful location and very relaxed small farm with a few sheep and a couple of horses.
Nestled in a lovely valley with a lake called a rivulet with platypus we managed to see.
Host was very helpful and discussed meal options which were limited in nearby villages and rustled up a lovely lamb stew with extra touches at pretty short notice on first night.
The cottage was well equipped so we felt at home with extras like home-made jam, plenty of bread, good coffee and tea, and all the extras in the bathroom.
Cottage has a big wood fire which was not necessary on warm nights.
Also was close enough to Mt Field National Park for an easy day visit and check out other attractions. As first time visitors to Tassie and coming from the city we were a little surprised at the lack of dining and grocery shopping options nearby.
- Christopher (8/5): An authentic farm stay in the midlands - An authentic farm stay with lake and platypus. Lack of table in mess area. Also very crafty and cold. Had to pay extra to light the fire.
- Elizabeth (8/5): Very good - Real farm stay in a fairly isolated location. Great that there was enough room to accommodate a multi-family group.
- Phillip (8/5): Very good - Facilities are very good and the attention by the host and hostess most entertaining
- Martin (8/5): Very good -
- Lucia (9/5): Superb - We had a lovely time in Shearers' Quaters Rathmore and even saw a platypus! The host was really nice and helpful and the surroundings awesome.
- Dieter (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable room. Clean, modern ensuite. Great kitchen. There’s nothing not to like!
- Ellis (8/5): True Aussie homestay with 5 star comfort -
- Matthew (10/5): Laid back and Easy - Laid back, comfortable, no fuss accommodation - If that's you then stay here.
- Kimberley (10/5): Amazing - The location, style of accomodation, history and hosts.
- Thomoris (10/5): Beautiful Farmstay - Great location! It's the perfect spot for a totally isolated getaway! The rooms were tidy, with heaters and electric blankets for those cold october nights. The animals were also really friendly. We got to make friends with the giant bullock Hercules and the 3 horses. The host was very friendly and welcoming. Next time, i think i would opt for a private lodge that they have on offer as the shearers' quaters could be a bit noisy at night time with other guests.
- Anonymous (10/5): Dear Cally and Richard I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation - we recently had the pleasure of staying at a farm cottage in Tasmania,Australia, and I must say it was an incredible experience from start to finish. Nestled amidst rolling hills and breathtaking scenery, this farm stay offered a tranquil escape from the bustling city life.
The cottage itself was cozy, clean, and beautifully decorated with a rustic charm that perfectly blended with the surrounding environment. It was equipped with all the necessary amenities, including a fully functional kitchen, comfortable beds, and a spacious living area.
The farm's extensive grounds provided ample space for leisurely walks and picnics, allowing us to unwind and connect with nature. We also had the chance to explore the nearby hiking trails and visit local attractions, all within a reasonable distance from the farm.
The hosts went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction throughout our stay. Their warm hospitality and genuine interest in sharing their farming lifestyle, properties history-made us feel like part of their extended family. They were always available to answer our questions, provide recommendations, and make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this farm stay cottage to anyone seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of nature. Whether you're looking to reconnect with the land, experience farm life firsthand, or simply relax and rejuvenate, this farm stay offers it all. With excellent accommodation, friendly hosts and with a rich history it truly exceeded our expectations. We left with unforgettable memories and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of rural Australia.
- Kathy (9/5): Superb -
- Stephen (9/5): Superb -
- Janiece (8/5): Lovely property - Location and such accommodating hosts they were fantastic. Home cooked meals were delicious. Cottage was lovely. Shower was great but curtain insufficient to prevent wetting a lot of bathroom floor. Heating not up to job and didn't want to have to pay extra $30 to light the fire.
- Robert (8/5): Very good - Quiet rural location, with rustic but comfortable accommodation, with full cooking facilities. Friendly owners and nice touches like marshmallows for the fire pit
- Jean (7/5): Good - Cally was lovely & upgraded us to Shearer's cottage. Cottage was a bit grubby, I think previous visitors didn't bother to wash up their kitchenware properly.
- Graham (9/5): Enjoyably different - This is a different experience which we really liked.
Rathmore is run by a very dynamic and interesting woman who gave us the history and a tour of the grand old house and the refurbished out buildings she uses for functions including weddings.
A feature of staying here is meeting fellow travellers in the shared kitchen or on the verandah for a drink and a chat..
The platypus pool is a bonus. Leaving.
- Rodney (9/5): Superb -
- Robyn (9/5): Superb - Loved the renovated Shearers quarters and the part working farm. Got to meet people in the communal kitchen. Cally the owner showed us through her magnificent house. She was very informant Our room was very small but comfy
- Solomon (8/5): You will be pleasantly surprised - Well presented, the messroom was a great way to converse with the other guest. Well positioned to travel to the Gordon Dam region and tourist activities. The platypuses were on display around dusk. Thank you, Cally
- Michal (10/5): Fascinating and fun - A very special place. Clean and generous hospitality. The woman who runs the place is very interesting, provides essential information and is full of interesting stories about the place. Also, there is a lake with 6 platypus All was very good
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - Had a wonderful few nights at Rathmore. Call generously upgraded us to the Cottage so our little family could have some more space. Cottage is great for kids. Easy under an hour drive up to Maydena to ride. Shearers quarters would be a great location for a group as well. Beautiful property and we thoroughly enjoyed our time. Thank you!
- Dianne (7/5): Good - Loved the serenity and country atmosphere. Nice modern ensuite shower and toilet. Appreciated being able to wash and dry clothes. In a shared kitchen, one stove top burner is not sufficient when all 4 rooms are occupied, considering that there are no restaurants or fast food or supermarkets for miles around. Fridge space was also limited.
- Whitstable (6/5): Pleasant - Bed, lighting and en suite were all ok. Small bedroom with no chair or kettle in it. No privacy, due to lack of sound insulation between bedrooms, can hear neighbours on each side, talking, snoring and using the bathroom. Mess Hall was poorly equipped for 4 couples. A single hotplate placed in front of a combination oven. A small fridge so insufficient room for the food for 4 couples. Little prep space. Only 1 tea towel and nowhere to dry it. Only 2 people can sit at a tiny table to eat. There is a 2 seat sofa and 1 other chair. Would be miserable in bad weather as no guest lounge. Tumble dryer in a guests bathroom, so need permission to use.
- Brenda (9/5): Superb - Cally the owner was great. Not only did she make us very welcome but she also introduced us to Hercules the bull, Pom Pom and Marmaduke the sheep plus three horses. The location is stunning, seems remote yet is very handy to some beautiful historis villages.
- Shirley (9/5): Peaceful and relaxing - The peace and quiet of Rathmore and generally winding down from a busy lifestyle. The ensuite bedroom was very comfortable , the verandah a lovely place to have a barbecue and a drink and the camp kitchen had everything we needed.
Chatting to fellow guests about the days adventures were pleasant and not forgetting Cally, a lovely host up for a chat. nothing to dislike
- Thomas (10/5): Cally was extremely nice host, very helpful. -

- Michel (10/5): A unique opportunity to experience life in a shearers’ quarters comfortably. - Very friendly and helpful hosts, attentive to clients’ wishes and interests. Excellent dinner in their lovely 19th c. house. Introduced me to some beautiful Tasmanian wines. Made interesting suggestions of activities to do in the area. Enjoyed the shearers’ quarters which provided opportunities to socialize with fellow travellers on the covered porch or enjoy one’s privacy. Very well-appointed kitchen in the quarters. Provided a unique experience of life in a shearers’ quarters. Room small but comfortable, well-renovated, clean. Electric blanket appreciated on cooler nights. Enjoyed my en-suite bathroom. Nothing.
- Merv (3/5): Nice and quiet when alone. - Kitchen was well appointed. Bathroom was good.Bedroom very small,no room for bags.Too close to other rooms. Walls thin and outside noise annoying. Seperate buildings for accomodation would make it better.
- Rhonda (10/5): An experience to treasure! - An ideal getaway for the whole family. A gorgeous cottage (converted shearers quarters) with period features retained. Really friendly and helpful hosts who were very willing to answer all our questions about the local community. The platypus that live in the lake and rowing the boat out to see them was the highlight for us. Feeding Hercules a close second... An unexpected bonus was the breakfast supplies (bread, milk, cereal, condiments) which was much appreciated, and especially the marshmallows provided for hot chocolates! The whole Rathmore grounds, with its historical buildings and structures is beautiful.

- Sue (10/5): As above - so wonderful to experience life in the country, open fires, sheep, lambs, platypus, walks and the lovely fresh air. Our hosts are such lovely people who can’t do enough for you and wonderful cooks. The experience of a lifetime. Can’t think of a thing
- Linda (9/5): Something a little different. Traditional shearers quarters turned into comfortable accomodation. - Being on a property and shearers quarters it was different to our usual accomodation. Lovely surrounds and well set up kitchen and huge bathroom. Very relaxing. Bed a little firm for us.
- Sheila (10/5): The hosts, the facilities, the location and the local wildlife made for a perfect stay. - It couldn’t have been more perfect. The chance to interact with the farm animals as well as see the resident echidna & platypus was amazing nothing
