Guest Reviews
- Emilie (6/5): -
- Anjali (8/5): Better than tent camping! - If you like camping, this set-up won't phase you at all. It was easy to cook here. There was a nice, covered area with hammocks where the wifi could reach. Luis and Julia were very hospitable. Luis is quite a character with a fascinating background. He is also a good stone and wood carver. I suggest bringing some cash to see if you can buy one of his stone carvings. We wished we had brought some extra. There was a bat in the bathroom. It didn't look anything like the profile picture on the site.
- Katharina (9/5): Superb - Monkeys and Tucans can be seen in the garden. Highly reccomended to book a jungle tour with Luis (the owner of the place) All good, just very basic place
- Rudy (8/5): Basic - Friendly hosts, speaks basic English, gives good advice on where to see animals. Rooms have canvas walls, limited privacy. Shared bathroom and shared kitchen.
- Aidan (10/5): Amazing! - Luis and Julia made my trip accessible and fun. Luis is a tremendous guide! A bit difficult to get to, perhaps write some instructions for public transit
- Fiorina (3/5): If you want to visit the corcovado dont come here. Or at least book a tour with an official guide - In the middle of nowhere They dont really take you to the official corcovado np.
- Norene (8/5): This unique place is a glamping adventure and we are glad we had the experience. - This is a very unique place to stay. The living area is open to the jungle and a hummingbird might fly through the house. The bedrooms are well protected from mosquitoes because the entire area is surrounded by a mesh screen. The room was cleaned daily. The owners are very nice people! Luis guided us on a jungle hike with wildlife sightings and info about the flora and fauna. The beach in the nearby town is enjoyable and town has restaurants and grocery stores.
- Lucie (10/5): Exceptional - Luis and his son are exceptional hosts. They helped us organize a tour. We really loved being in the woods in this apartment with a perfect kitchen. The furniture is amazing.
- Jennie (10/5): Great peaceful spot amidst wildlife - Wonderful location in a small village approx 4km from La Palma. Nice home built accomodtion in the garden of Louis the talented craftsman.
Near to river and national park. Nothing... all was great
- Tijmen (10/5): Exceptional - Bienvendidos is the word! The host is super friendly and so it felt as if we where visiting friends. The room is spacecious and good facilities. Everything you need to make you feel at home! Lovely hammock in the living room :D Don't hesitate.. Just go!
- Era (10/5): Great experience! - It was an open house on the garden of the owner, very cute and well equipped! The bedroom was protected by a mosquito net, so nothing bothers you at night. The rest of the areas are outside areas, which is quite nice. The kitchen is well equipped and bathroom as well. The hosts are very nice! Luis is a guide for the Corcovado and he knows a lot about the jungle! We did a two days tour in Corcovado with him and it was amazing! He booked everything for us in advance. We learned so much because he would explain a lot of things about the jungle you don’t necessarily notice. And he was very kind and funny! He is an artist as well, makes furnitures and little cute statues with stone from the river! Very good experience in total!
- Broken-winged (5/5): Low score because mismanaged expectations. We left one day early. - Luis and his team are very very nice. The area is safe. We liked their creativity in woodwork and making a living from ecotourism.
As others have reviewed, this is essentially a wooden platform with poles for a structure and shade cloth used as mosquito netting to create the 'walls'. As seasoned field biologists, we are used to very rustic and minimal conditions. There is proper bed (the mattress would benefit from being replaced as it was very thin) and there is a simple toilet, sink and shower to wash. The shower is a pipe (no shower rose) and there is no hot water. This wasn't a problem as the weather was very hot and humid. and the water was not that cold. We had booked an 'apartment with a garden view' consisting of a 1 living room, 1 separate bedroom and 1 bathroom with a shower and free toiletries. The apartment was supposed to have a dining area, a balcony and mountain views, come with a fan, towels and linen. In reality, there were no toiletries (which wasn't a problem as we had our own), only one towel, polyester linen (awful in hot humid weather) and no fan. We did ask for a fan after the first night and the owners immediately provided us with one after we asked.
The dining area is shared with another unit about 1.5 meters away, much to the surprise of the other couple as the dining area is attached to their 'room'. Our unit would benefit from removing the extra bed and chairs from the balcony, and installing a simple sink, fridge and kettle etc. That way, both units have their own kitchenette and dining area. The current set up does not reflect what is advertised, and may take people by surprise. Otherwise, change the advert and say dining facilities are shared. Each unit has its own bathroom.
Well stocked supermarkets reasonably close by to get fresh fruits and provisions. We didn't try the restaurants in the area. The two rooms that are available for booking are too close to each other. This is perfect if you rent both units, but not great if you don't know the other group. The proximity and the design of these accommodations mean that in the dark, when you switch on the light in your 'room' you have no privacy.
We didn't have a door, only a flap and there was no nail to keep it shut. This meant that there was a 1cm gap for mosquitos to fly in. The second night we bought a plug-in mosquito thing, which, together with the fan, worked well.
What we didn't like most - and this was our fault - was that the accommodation is about 30minutes drive from Puerto Jimenez where you have to go and catch the boat to go to the Corcovado Reserve. We didn't realise that to enter the reserve you need to use a boat otherwise we would have booked closer to the port.
- Maria (10/5): Wonderfull - Thé monkeys came right next to thé cabin. Thé owners are so welcoming and the cabin doesnt miss anything. If you are looking for a rustic place to pass nights with the jungle sounds, this is definatively the place. Very clean!
You havé to bring food to cook because there is no restaurant.
Thank you Again for a wonderful stay. I sincerely appreciated it. Pura vida Nothing, lives everything.
- Carryn (10/5): Peaceful and tranquil escape - One of the most incredible places to stay in Costa Rica! The cabin is very rustic and surrounded by lush trees, birds and wildlife - we had hummingbirds flying around! There’s a river nearby which is a great place for swimming and we saw lots of Tucan, Macaws and monkeys on the road leading to Los Platos. If youre looking for a quiet escape with no tourists, this is perfect!
The host is one of the most genuine and kind people i have met! he also does guided hikes but these need to be booked in advance.
The internet was fast and reliable (10mbps) and the kitchen was equipped with a stove top, fridge, coffee machine (coffee provided) and all the cutlery and pots/pans you need. So bring your own groceries as there are no restaurants or shops nearby. Theres a fan in the room and only a cold shower but thats just what we wanted after spending the days out in the heat!
We arrived using public transport to La Palma and then took a 3000 colones taxi to Corcovado Guide House which is 2 km from the town.
Thank you so much for a wholesome stay!
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good - It’s very secluded and nicely nestled in the jungle. Luis and his family are very accommodating. Make sure to have a car or a local taxi to explore. You can hike from La Palma but it is a stretch especially when it’s hot.
- David (10/5): fantastic stay - out in the wilderness open plan kitchen cockerel wake us up 3.30 am
- Anna (8/5): Very good - Spacious cabin in the back of the owners garden facing the forest.
Equipped kitchen with fridge and one stove.
Bedroom is a Moskito "cage" all other sides are open to the forest, perfect for those temperatures.
Nice host who offers tours to Corcovado. No warm water, but no problem for us.
- Alice (9/5): Humble home in nature - A simple handmade cabin that lets you sleep so close to wonderful nature that surrounds you. Luis is a very welcoming host and our tour to Corcovado with him was an unforgettable experience! There is WiFi and a gas cooker, the bed is surrounded by a mosquito 'cage'. Amazing birdwatching around the house and also the hammock was great for chilling. There is a little pulpería with basic items about 10 minute walk or a bigger shop 40 minute walk. It was a worthwhile stay.
If this is helpful for anyone arriving from Uvita by bus:
We caught the ~10.45 bus opposite Gollo in Uvita (4 mil colones each) and got off at Chacarita at around 1ish then waited until ~3pm for the bus from Chacarita to Puerto Jimenez and got off at La Palma (3 mil colones each to la palma). Then a taxi took us from La Palma bus stop to Luis's house. Not a problem for us, but be prepared for a cold shower and bugs. It would be easier to have a car but we managed with buses!
- Veronika (9/5): Superb - Very nice stay in the jungle, big and comfortable bed, fully equipped kitchen, very helpful host who was also our guide in Corcovado NP and shared with us a lot of interesting stories from his life.
