Guest Reviews
- Catherine (10/5): Wonderful, helpful owner and staff. - Although we were at the pousada for only one night, we enjoyed the hospitality and breakfast. The owner helped us arrange our transfer to Barreirinhas ahead of time. Our room was spacious for the four of us. If we were to stay longer to explore the center, it is a perfect location. Nothing

- ANA CLAUDIA GUERRA DE (10/5): - Excelente
- silvana (9/5): Casa antiga, bem conservada, ótimo atendimento e no miolo do centro histórico!
- A localização é boa porque dá acesso a vários pontos turísticos, podendo fazer tudo a pé.

- anne (9/5): Great unique stay and good value! - Each room had a different name and was unique. Antique furniture was a lovely change! Great location for exploring on foot. Nice breakfast. Nothing- we wished we could speak Portugese so we could converse with the staff!
- Martina (10/5): - Casa Lavinia is a beautiful and welcoming place to stay in São Luís, full of charm and character. The rooms are stunning, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable. Franck was absolutely amazing – he and his team were incredibly reliable, always ready to help, and made everything easy for us, including booking cars and giving local advice. Their kindness and attention made us feel truly at home. Highly recommended!
- Vanessa (8/5): -
- Rolf (9/5): Very pleasant and even better with the São João festivities. - The house and its decoration. The staff very helpful and nice. The breakfast.
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional - Charmingly and very individually decorated rooms in an old house. Very comfortable beds, many pillows. Very clean. Good Brazilian breakfast with ample fruits and very tastily spiced omelets. Great location in the center of the historic district, you can easily walk to all key attractions or to restaurants at night time. Quiet street. Shower pressure was low.
- Patrick (7/5): Ok for a night - The building was beautiful, an old historic mansion. Bed linen didn’t match the size of bed. Mattress and pillows uncomfortable. Breakfast was extremely poor. Tasteless juice. Stale bread and cakes.
- Jennifer (8/5): Good choice for centro historico - Comfortable with friendly staff . Comfy bed and good aircon.generous breakfast
- Fernanda (7/5): Good - It’s good location if you want to stay in the historical center, otherwise you can get better value for money staying outside of it It looks better in the pictures that in real life; the house is very nice, old and has something; but the room had no windows and the air was weird.
- Ian (9/5): Pleasant, traditional building - Very large, traditional room in renovated colonial era house. Big bed. Nice breakfast. 10 mins walk to centre. Nice artwork. WiFi a bit hit or miss. Quiet deserted street at night
- Katherine (10/5): Special stay in a historic property - A gem of a pousada, lovingly restored by its owners in a way that preserves the history and character of the building. My room and bathroom were enormous, comfortable, and equipped with everything that you need for a short stay. There’s an amazing communal living room on the first floor and breakfast is served in a room adjoining a lovely patio area. The owner was a warm and generous host. Only 5 mins walk to the historic centre. If you want to immerse yourself in the history of Sao Luis and feel like you are staying in someone’s unique home, I would highly recommend. A hairdryer would be a good addition. That’s it!
- Emilie (9/5): Exceptional I recommend - Old house with charm
- Guillaume (8/5): Very good - Great old colonial house atmosphere, right where you need to be in Sao Luis. Very good service.
- Giulia (9/5): Superb -
- Frauke (8/5): Very good -
- Salima (9/5): Superb -
- Roger (8/5): Beautiful portugese house - Beautiful tradition house, lots of space. Staff very friendly and helpful. The house is a raw diamond which has not yet been polished. It would deserve a lot of love!
Our family room had windows without glass giving to a walkway where other guests could walk/see/enter, that made it a bit uncomfortable- that seemed to be room specific.
- Konstantinos (7/5): Had fun - The location was great. The traditional house provided a vibe of older times which aligns nice with the historic centre. Laundry services was exceptional. breakfast was sufficient. beds were old and as such they made squeaky noises and the same was also the case of the floors. staff did not speak English but successfully used translation applications to communicate.
- Alessio (6/5): Ha good place in the heart of Sao Luis - The building per se is truly beautiful: an old residence with big spaces and a very nice garden.
I think it has a very big potential... ... Unfortunately it's not that clean.
The staff is very nice, but I had problems communicating, since I can't speak Portuguese and they don't speak English.
Overall, it's a nice place to stay.
- Anna (9/5): Superb - Spacious, comfortable rooms. Nice breakfast. Allowed us to check-in late.
- Kylie (10/5): Beautiful home in perfect location in historic part of town - Fantastic location in historic centre of town, incredibly spacious, clean and comfortable room, decorated with a Moroccan style. The staff were wonderful and even made us a special breakfast as we were leaving at 6am. Nothing, it was perfect.
- Mario (8/5): Very good -
- Cristina (10/5): Relaxing - It’s a beautiful well maintained “casarão “, right on the historical center of São Luiz. It was very quiet, it has a beautiful “varanda” on the upper floor, beautiful back yard.
- Justin (9/5): Superb -
- Jackeline (9/5): Great location, lovely place, amazing staff. - The property is amazing. I loved the atmosphere, the decoration, the room was big. Every was clean and worked perfectly. The AC and the shower were perfect.
Location is also great if you are looking to stay in the historic center.
The staff was amazing. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The tapioca I had for breakfast was dreamy.
I had to leave early to go to Barreirinhas and the served us breakfast a little bit early - amazing people. I only have one concern to share with those staying longer. It’s right in the heart of the historical center, which is great, but it can also be noise. It might depend on your room, but during our stay there was a building just behind it playing really loud music until almost 1 am. Which could be because it was a holiday and the next day was a regular working day. Music can go longer during the weekends, so be aware if you are not a party person and like to sleep after a long day of walking around. The building was so close and the music so loud, it felt like it was inside the room. Otherwise, I loved my stay and would still recommend, having that in mind.
- Henriques (9/5): Superb -
- Anna (10/5): A haven - Very spacious, beautiful, very central, incredibly helpful and accommodating staff- loved it all Nothing
- Cédric (9/5): Beautiful house and bedroom in a great old town location - Nicely decorated room
Beautiful all wooden decorated house
Great location
Very good breakfast Shower drain was not working: water from bathtub spilled out
(6/5): So so - Location As soon as I entered the room, a cockroach was there.
- Patrick (9/5): Superb -
- Arrebol (10/5): Exceptional - O charme do hotel boutique. A amabilidade do dono e o pessoal.
- Henk (4/5): uncomfortable stay in a rundown place. - large room in an interesting house with a great bathroom. no one there when we arrived and had to wait 30 minutes in a sketchy street. location is not great.
breakfast very basic.
rundown feel to the house with broken furniture and (broken) stuff stored everywhere.
lots of noise issues, especially at night.
quite dirty.
uncomfortable bed.
- Maria (8/5): Very good -
- Luis (8/5): Very good - That the bathroom was outside
- Daniel (7/5): Good - Very beautiful building in the heart of the historic centre of Sao Luis, house well maintained. Great location and very walkable area. The check-in could have been much better. I booked the place just before boarding a flight. Because I did not have roaming access in Brazil I was not able to notify the host of my exact arrival time. I understand that this might frustrate the host, but I could detect a very strong sense of annoyance on her part. Understandable to a point, but I really was not able to do much about it and I arrived at a very reasonable time (18:00). Nevertheless, I had the strong feeling that she was quite impatient and wanted to get off work as soon as possible. Again, understandable, but I also don't want to feel like I am a huge burden. Also, breakfast is poor by Brazilian standards.
- Stefan (9/5): Superb - Casa Lavinia is the most beautiful guesthouse I have seen in Brazil. A rather inconspicuous facade reveals a spacious, elegant colonial house with heigh ceilings and floors and furniture made from precious tropical wood. There is a large, comfortable living room with a fine library of selected classics and a gallery with views into the green patio. Our room Padronal was designed in oriental style with a giant bathroom tiled with mosaics and Moroccan furniture. Everything looked very tasteful and exquisite.
For explorations of Sao Luis, Casa Lavinia enjoys a perfect location right in the historical city centre, 5 minutes walk from the market hall around which you will find some good restaurants. The Wi-Fi signal was not very good in all parts of the room, probably due to the architecture of the house. The tv in the living room comes with Netflix but I did not get it working.
- Katia (4/5): Good location and beautiful building but definitely not worth the money. - Huge rooms and bathroom in beautiful old colonial building. Comfy bed nice linen. Property was advertised to have Wi-Fi but we could only get it in the bathroom or downstairs. We informed the staff but they were unable to do anything. The tv in the common area didn’t work - the staff attempted to fix it but all they did was bring the roku box up and connected it - because there was no Wi-Fi it still didn’t work. On the first day the breakfast was good however by our 4th day all the food was stale and very little selection was left. The ham had turned white and slimy. We asked staff if they were going to replenish the food but they said it was raining and couldn’t. The good thing was that they would cook you an omelette or tapioca if you asked. These were yummy but after the incident with the rancid ham we didn’t trust any of the food there…
- P. (8/5): Great stay in the old part of town - Very central location! Very well preserved building. It smells a bit like an old museum, maybe they could work on that. And some of the staff is not very friendly.
- Dan (8/5): Lovely ambience and location but needs a better bed for comfortable sleeping - Awesome location, very friendly and accommodating staff, beautiful restored home with lovely artwork and themed rooms. There is a very cool art scene in the area with many artist creating in their studios as you walk along the streets with beautiful architecture in the streets. So much potential for this city to be a cool destination with Lençios close by (even though Lençios was more touristy than advertised) if investment and more thoughtfulness is applied. The bed was not very comfortable and is in need of replacement as it was not very firm at all and left us with back pain throughout our stay. It was also listed as having an Airport Shuttle but we were told there is no shuttle once we arrived. Important note for travelers: while I would recommend staying here for sure when in Sao Luis there is not really that much to do in the area, especially during the week and the beaches aren’t great either so for one or two nights it’s worth stay here for sure but keep expectations low as far as activities and things to do.
- Douwe (9/5): Excellent - Location historical center - walking distance
Breakfast home made nice, good tasting, plenty
Excellent advice from owner for trips, even in Barreirinhas. Owner booked two sensational trips for us!! One by car and one by fast boat. Safe, professional, Customer focused. All good, what can be expected from an historical building.
- Wolfgang (8/5): Very good - centrally located, lots of space nothing
- Alejandra (8/5): Very good -
- Borjana (10/5): Perfect - Old colonial house, we stayed jn the Padronal apartment and it was gorgeous, perfect for our honeymoon. Location in the old historic center.
- Frederico (9/5): Superb -
- Chiara (10/5): Just perfect -
- Lisa (7/5): Hotel ideally located next to the historical center - - Ideally located next to the historical area, ideal to plan a visit
- The house is very beautiful and there is a courtyard where you can chill
- great breakfast - I was in a room on the 1st floor and I could literally hear the person in the room next door snoring... I could not sleep for the whole night...
- Bed mattress was a bit old, you could feel a whole in the middle
- Cleaning was OK but not amazing particularly in the bathroom
- Szypulski (9/5): awesome place. - great style. Franck is a very helpful host.
- Laura (9/5): Superb -
