Guest Reviews
- Metka (8/5): Lovely Great Wall experience - Convenient location, Japanese toilets and showers with amazing water pressure . The host provides you with clear hiking instructions and real time WeChat support, as well as coordinates all the transportation for you Cats everywhere, limited food options (meals offered are overpriced for what they are - 35 for breakfast, 65 for lunch and dinner)
- Géraldine (10/5): -
- Gergely (10/5): - friendly owner
location close to the wall
bathroom with heated toilet seat
breakfast is nice
comfortable beds the translator machine the owner use is not the best it sometimes hard to understand
smoking is allowed in the lobby
- Svend (10/5): - Best way to see the Great Wall of China. And best place to stay when doing so!
Even from before arriving, we got some guidance and help to ensure that our stay was as good as possible. It felt so much like home and authentic stay as we’ve tried anywhere. Amazing effort from the lady running the hotel itself as well, with everything from guiding us but also the food she cooked! Wow! Highly recommend!
Further, the owner even helped us plan drivers for both seeing the wall, but also our transport back to Beijing. Incredibly convenient, helpful and professional!
- Jerome (10/5): Great hospitality, confortable. Great food! - The place is very cure and comfy. Ms Xiaomei is a very welcoming and pleasant host, and a great cook! The kids loved playing with the 3 cats of the house in the patio. I enjoyed the views to the mountains and the quietness of a good coffee outside in the morning sun. Dinner was brilliant. The kids loved the waffles with fruits for breakfast. We go there after a trek on the great wall, and found it enjoyable and relaxing. We enjoyed the compact family room with en-suite bathroom, though we considered staying in the XXL family room with shared bathroom. Everything is super clean. The guesthouse is in a traditional house renovated to be functional and comfortable. Very affordable imported and local beers and other drinks. We went for a walk to the village (through the arch under a section of the wall, a couple of hundred meters away from the guesthouse, and connected with villagers who were very friendly and kind. We regretted to have booked only one night and would come back! Having booked only one night and having to go back to the city... :-)
- Joyce Lim (10/5): - The host was friendly and the stay felt like home. Meals were delicious yet healthy. The environment was very lovely.
- Jan Jakob (10/5): - It was very nice as usual, the Host lady is very friendly and helps with everything you need! We had a great time and will definitely come back!
- oleg (3/5): Советую поискать другие варианты. - Милые котики Удобства вне номера, завышены цены на всё, не искренне!
- Samuel (10/5): -
- Samuel (10/5): - The manager of the hostel (Xiao Wei) is so so friendly it's unbelievable! I stayed here two years ago, and have now brought my partner and friend here because it's such a nice place to stay.
She even remembered me and was extra friendly. Sadly, my friend had caught a stomach bug (not from here) and we couldn't go hiking the 2nd day - so she let us stay the whole day after we were meant to check out for free!
The food she/ the cook makes is very filling and tasty traditional Chinese food (all vegetarian, but tasty). She gives you several choices of hikes, offers great advice, and sends you detailed photos of where to go to make sure you don't get lost.
The place itself is just so nicely decorated, it's such a vibe and so clean and frankly spot-on. There's beautiful friendly cats to play with, but they don't go into the living spaces, kitchen, or dorms so no worries if you're allergic. Absolutely nothing. 10/10
Niets, wij zouden meteen terugkomen.
- Pablo (9/5): -
- Rick (10/5): - Friendly staff helping you with hiking the wall Location is a bit hard to find
- Tim (10/5): - Right next to the north gate entrance of the wall (5 minute walk), as well as a nearby small town with tasty restaurants and supermarkets, this hostel and our stay here was just absolutely perfect.
Extremely friendly and attentive host lady who cooked us fabulous and very filling dinners and who was always happy to help and answer questions, organize transports etc.
3 lovely cuddly cats, great chats with fellow travelers at the dinner table and community area.
It was a brilliant stay, everything was clean and the facilities in great condition and our private room very spacious and warm. Water pressure was great and its temperature boiling hot for those who enjoy a good burn :D
Don’t do the mistake of only booking one night and arriving here late in the evening, then doing the wall bit the next day after checking out and then having to rush in order to get back to the hostel in time to pick up your stuff and to make the last train back to Beijing at 5.20pm, it’s just not worth the stress and this particular stretch of wall + the relaxed laid back vibe in the hostel are just too good to be rushed through. It really isn’t just a box ticking exercise.
Book it, book at least 2 nights, lean back, have travel memories that will last you forever. Beijing is going to wait for you that extra night, don’t worry. We stayed here for four nights, hiked different bits of the wall and could have easily stayed longer if time would have allowed us to.
Thank you box house, would stay here always and always again with absolute pleasure.
- Lasse (10/5): - The host was so helpful and very resourceful. We had a great time with our children in this place. The food was also great. The location is the best. Thank you
- Marzio (10/5): -
Jajajaja. Recomiendo al 100% Nada
- Julie (9/5): The perfect location to start one of the best hike I've ever done! - Perfectly located hostel, very quiet and comfortable. You can get vegetarian dinner for 65¥, breakfast for 45¥ and it costs 20¥ to get there by cab from the train station. Free tap water but make sure to bring some snacks from Beijing. Very helpful staff who translates everything. The hike takes 4-6 hours and is absolutely stunning - would highly recommend it!

- Camille (10/5): Highly recommend Great Wall experience - The place is great, located just at the foot of the Great Wall, and not far from the train station where the super nice host picked me up. She contacted me after the booking and offered all necessary informations, both in Chinese and English. The place is very cozy, I was staying in the 4-beds female room and it was very comfortable. The optional meals are also very good. The common spaces are great, terrace and a big living space with a table to eat and several places to chill, read, meet others. There are also three very cute cats. The host advised me to get up early to see the sunrise from the Wall if I so liked, and so I did and it was awesome. She showed me a map and gave me all necessary indications. I ate breakfast at 4:30 AM before setting out, and they also could prepare something for me to take away, as I hadn’t brought anything myself. The wall is beautiful here and there aren’t many people hiking.
- Dominic (10/5): A great stay that made my trip to Beijing and the Great Wall! Highly recommend! - Walking distance to the Great Wall, Japanese toilets, home cooked meals available to buy, comfortable bed with great A/C… One of my favorite hostel stays ever!
- Finlay (10/5): -
- Maria (9/5): A lovely peaceful hostel close to exciting Great Wall hiking. - It is so peaceful in the courtyard. There were mosquitoes there when we visited in October that the plug-in devices did not deter.
- daniel (10/5): Awesome place to stay next to Great Wall, staff is super friendly and helpful - Everything
- Jelena (10/5): -
- BEATRICE (10/5): The stay has been great: nice environment , warm stuff! - Very cosy environment Nothing… maybe consider the location
- Siriluck (9/5): - If you want a place that feel like home.. a bit off the beaten track.. and not annoyed by cats 😆.. try this place. The owner and the staff are very hospitable and really helped us with transportation.. (given the location).. Room is great especially the bathroom facility.. come with heated toilet seat 😉.. quite happy about that.!!
- Rodrigo (10/5): Feeling at home, in the country side of China - The staff was amazing and super attentive. They spent hours helping me plan my transportation to the hotel, and also to the Great Wall in Jinshanling. They cooked delicious homemade food for me, which was nicely combined with the comfort of the house (and the nice cats). I hope I can stay there again!

Since the information on the internet is limited for non-Chinese speakers, I have a bit of an advice here below.
If you want a true hiking experience, I would recommend you to follow the Great Wall from Gubeikou all the way to Jinshanling, which can take several hours. The section is Gubeikou is a bit older and less preserved, but from Jinshanling, it gets high up in the mountains and impressively beautiful.
If you want a less intense hike, I would recommend just taking a taxi to the Jinshanling Wall so that you can go straight to the well-preserved parts (it still requires climbing a couple of dozen meters + following the wall up and down). Jinshanling is still far from any crowds, so overall it's a peaceful experience with stunning views.
- Logan (10/5): Right on the wall, cozy, with kind staff! - The owner of this place is an absolute angel! I had a really tough time getting to the place (I recommend taking the train which only runs twice per day or booking a DiDi directly), and when I arrived in shambles, everyone really felt for me and everything was taken care of as a result! Seriously - hugs, dinner (made according to my dietary restrictions), hiking plans - I didn't have to lift a finger! The place is GORGEOUS, by the way! Clean, modern, with cozy reclining chairs, a huge TV in the living room, rocking heaters for fall and winter and comfy beds. This is a quality hostel! Stay more than one night and give yourself some time to actually ENJOY being on the wall! I so loved this place! BOOK IT! Seriously it was perfect. I can't imagine a better trip to the Wall!
- Damon (10/5): - Super friendly and helpful staff!!! Very clean facilities! Only stayed for one night, which was a little rushed, slight mistake on my part.. Definitely recommend two or more nights here if you have time and want to explore that wall more. The sections of the wall this place is close to are amazing!!!!
- Greene (9/5): - The proximity to The Great Wall was fantastic. The hosts were really helpful with organizing transport back to Beijing and local taxis.
The vegetarian evening meal was delicious and was a good opportunity to socialise with other guests.
I would thoroughly recommend this guest house.
- Jarrod (10/5): Incredible hospitality and a fatstatic little getaway for the perfect Great Wall hiking experience! - I’ve travelled for 18 months and this is one of my best experiences. The whole place is like a little oasis nestled in a beautiful little village away from an other tourist spots. The lady there cooked the most incredible dinners for us each night and gave us perfect instructions to hike the Great Wall. The beds and facilities are top notch (including the amazing Japanese toilets and the cute cats). I can’t speak more highly of this place!! They are extremely helpful in giving directions to the property and organising a ride to the train station. 10/10.
- Ruth (10/5): - The family style dining at dinner time- abundance of amazing home cooked food.
Location- 5min walk to the great wall.
14km route over the wall and taxi back to hostel. Loved it.
The staff- kind and friendly.
Our kids felt comfortable and welcome.
The room - warm comfortable and clean. Nothing
- TWALAL (10/5): We had a perfect stay to here to trek the Great Wall. The owners/staff were lovely and gave great tips. The food was - Everything, the location, the owners, the cats, the food Nothing
- Tim (10/5): Een gezellig en aangenaam verblijf - De sfeer.
- Nadja (10/5): Amazing from A to Z - The location is prefect for exploring the wall, the staff was beyond friendly and helpful, the dinner was incredibly fresh and tasty. I'll definitely go back in the future! Nothing, it was beyond my expectations.
- Lottie (10/5): Great value stay - Lovely small hostel/hotel. Lovely people there friendly and helpful. Super clean. Beds were comfty and bathroom and showers were great. Food was also quite nice.
- Matthew (10/5): The best place in china - Absolutely perfect. Emaculately maintained, amazing staff and the most friendly cats. In a perfect location to explore the Great Wall away from crowds. Nothing!!
- PANAGIOTA (10/5): - I chose this hostel as a base for visiting the Great Wall of China. There are a couple of ways to arrive there, the owner provides all the information after booking. My way: from Beijing North Station I took the "Huaimi line of suburban railway" to Gubeikou town. I bought the ticket at the train station 3 hours in advance and it costs 12 CNY. The trip takes ~2,5 h. From the station, a taxi took me to the hostel (~4KM, 20 CNY). It was arranged by the hotel in advance. Once you arrive you find yourself in a kind or yoga retreat. Calmness, tranquility, good vibes. I was lucky enough to have the dorm all to myself. The bunk beds are old styled, no curtains/bed light/bed socket. But my mattress was comfy. The bathroom area is excellent. Lots of toiletries are there for you to choose. And yes, the toilets are Japanese style! For extra payment you can have dinner and breakfast, all chinese style, cooked in their kitchen, mainly vegetarian. And before even settling down, Xiaowei (the owner) tells you everything about the trail you are going to follow the next day. She uses a translation gadget and sends crucial photos of the path through "Wechat" application. She and her assistant Lynn accomodate any need you might have, always smiling and thoughtful. I could write about the actual village where there is not much to do (apart from experiencing the actual chinese rural life),
but on my second day I saw that busses bring people here in order to start one of the Great Wall trails. And this makes a really great reason to come here, spend a couple of days and enjoy the hiking, instead of taking a one day trip excursion from Beijing. There is also a beautiful town (Water Town=Guo bei shui town) nearby, which I did not visit and from what I found out, is great for night strolls and views over the Simatai Wall!
- Alisa (10/5): Perfekter Ort um die Great Wall zu erkunden :) - Super nettes Personal, Unterkunft ist sehr sauber, es gibt leckeres vegetarisches Essen, kuschelbedürftige Katzen und super Lage, wenn man zur Great Wall möchte. Ich hatte eine tolle Zeit, vielen Dank! -
- Ludovic (10/5): Meilleure auberge que j’ai pu faire !!! - Le personnel est incroyable, très attentionné et toujours prêt à aider
- Bjørn (10/5): - Really good atmosphere at the hostel, its also very clean and the quality of the hostel here is much better than Beijing.
They were very helpful with giving routes for the wall, and were quick to respond when we got lost and asked for the way.
The dinner though vegetarian was really good, and plenty enough.
- Herman (9/5): -
- Alicia (10/5): - The host helps explain the different hiking trails in the area of the great wall and it is a 10 min walk from the start of one. The hosts cooking is also great! It was nice to have home cooked meals!
- Lien (10/5): -
- Indy (10/5): - This place is incredible! The rooms and beds are air conditioned and very comfortable, the bathrooms are clean and have Japanese style toilets with heated seats and cleansing jets. The outdoor courtyard and common sitting area are super cosy with swings and reclining sofas to chill out. The breakfast and dinner is delicious - home cooked and healthy. And best of all, the host Xiaowei is so kind, welcoming, and helpful! Highly recommend staying here to check out the stunning Jinshanling portion of the wall.
- Stephen (10/5): Great place to meet other international travelers hiking the Jinshanling section of the - The breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The location was Great Wall Ming dynasty.-ish
- Gijsbertha (10/5): - The manager is an extremely kind and helpful person. I didn't want to leave. The room was very comfortable and has a nice terrace. The food is delicious and very healthy. Great location, close to some stunning, non-touristy sections of the Wall. If you want to see the Wall, go here!
- Toby (10/5): The best place for staying next to the Great Wall with the best host in all of China - This was the second time I’ve stayed here in the last 10 years, and it was just as incredible this time as it was the first. You can literally walk to the Great Wall and see it from your room in the morning - there is no better place to base yourself for visiting this world wonder.
Then there’s the host Xiaowei, who is hands down the best guesthouse host I’ve ever had in all my travels across China. She cooks the most incredible hearty food every day for guests and ran the entire show while we were around. Whether we needed reassurance about weather, help with taxis and Great Wall bookings, or arranging a driver home when trains and buses were suspended - she always went above and beyond to provide the best possible experience for us and every other guest!
- Mehr (10/5): - The property is extremely cute and charming. It’s located very close to the Gubeiku Great Wall entrance. The lady running the place is kind and friendly. There are tiny details in the guesthouse that add to the charm of the place. The food was fresh and delicious. The cherry on the top of the cake were the cats!!
No saben inglés.
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional - Great stay, very hospitable host. Lovely rooms and common area
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional - Incredibly welcoming. All facilities were in great condition and very clean. The dinner cooked at the stay was delicious also and they were extremely helpful with information and making my stay as comfortable as possible. Nothing
- Stanojlovic (10/5): Great hostels - Really good hostel with a very friendly host. You can get fresh home cooked meals which are straight from her garden and the portions are really big. The facilities are really good and it is a 5 mins walk from the start of the hike on the Great Wall. Would highly recommend.
- Dumitrip (10/5): Perfect place to explore the Great Wall of China - We LOVED our stay here! It's fairly simple accommodation, and yet it was one of our favourite during our 3 weeks in China. Very clean and well maintained property, a hidden gem. The owner is so lovely and helpful, and it was great fun to interact with her using the translation device. Loved the cats too! Fantastic location in a quiet village near the Great Wall - you can actually see a section of the wall from your window. This section of the wall is definitely harder to reach than others, but so worth it if you want to experience this world wonder without the crowds - most of the time, we were completely alone as we hiked along the walls. Amazing, varied dinner, and great value for money overall.
- Khari (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carter (9/5): Superb -
- Emeline (10/5): Exceptional - I had such a special time in Jingshanling. Everyone was very kind and helpful. The room and the hostel in general felt like a home. I was only there for 2 days, but I wish I could have stayed longer. Jingshanling is a very special place, and it was one of the highlights of my trip in China. Thank you to Xiaoé (sorry for the spelling) for being the sweetest, most helpful host on top of a great cook!! I definitely recommend this place!!
- Marnix (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephane (9/5): Perfectly located base for Great Wall hikes - Super friendly hosts, three lovely and friendly cats, good meals available for a decent price (LOTS of food at dinner time), located very close to both trailheads, very cozy cabin-like vibe, many places to relax or hangout.
P.S. Although she will advise against the Wohushan trail, it is open and doable, albeit a bit dangerous in some areas Bathrooms are located in a separate building.
- Kelly (10/5): This is a place I’d miss and want to return back again. My first stay was more than a decade ago and the moment we made - The easygoing and helpful hosts; the delicious meals that warms not just your stomach but your heart because every dish is cooked with love; the proximity it is to the wild sections of the Great Wall; the superb design of the property from an awesome common hall/dining area to heated floors (our room had it) to heated toilet seats etc; the comfortable bed and couch; the view of the Great Wall from the room… Ruirui patiently helped me with my enquiries while Xiao Wei hosted my children and I with much kindness, concern and consideration throughout our stay. She’s also the cook and we would slurp up everything she prepares. The calm and serene vibe this accommodation gives makes one wants to stay longer :) our first day we did a night walk of Simatai section Great Wall that included the cable car (expensive! But enjoyable)… second day we hiked up the wild Great Wall. I felt this pace was slow and lovely for my younger children. Nothing. I’d just want to note that I have found it probably most straightforward to take the train from Beijing North (北京北站) station to Gubeikou station, and then asking the host to arrange for driver to pick up. I took the express shuttle from dongzhimen and had a very, very difficult time finding the correct bus bay with the correct bus to catch. The many locals I had enquired with weren’t even sure where to board because it had shifted around.
- Mari (9/5): Great place to be, amazing experience. - I liked the guesthouse itself. Really tidy, clean, practical and greatly decorated. The host is super nice and kind. (Translation can be tiring but nevertheless). Location is amazing, for people who wants to enjoy the Great wall. Just be aware of the train/bus schedule to the guesthouse, as there are fixed times The bed was a bit hard but not uncomfortable.
- Inaki (10/5): Exceptional - One of the best hostels I've stayed at. Clean, comfortable, big beds and a very hard working, smiling host that cooks up a storm. Even if she speaks very little english, she goes out of her way with her translator to help. Big common room to talk with people and get hiking groups together. Really impressed with this place. Not criticism, just a tip if you plan on hiking the wall, she will explain the route on a hand drawn map. Thats good for reference, but make sure you download Maps.me or something similar to find your way and avoid getting lost.
- Paul (10/5): Welcome stay very happy thank you - Very clean, well organised, good facilities, friendly staff. All meals available at good price No complaints thank you
- George (10/5): Huge recommendation - suggest two nights - So easy to meet people, the lady who runs it is the sweetest, delicious vegetarian food and a beautiful part of the wall which is not very touristy. The town nearby is a bit of a construction site but that doesn’t really matter as everything you need (really everything) is in the hostel.
- Isabel (10/5): Extremely helpful staff, peaceful and very clean. - We loved the location, the town of Gubeikou is cozy and perfectly located to hike the trail of the Great Wall. The room and the beds were very comfortable, nice and clean, the bathroom was also very clean and nice. Our host was sweet and helpful. The three resident cats were also lovely and cuddly. We would definitely come back!
- Edwin (10/5): Paradise, heaven on earth - There is only one word that can describe this place: Paradise. I have travelled many countries, and it was at this small little inn in the middle of nowhere that left an everlasting impression. The innkeeper, Xiao Wei, is the most wonderful innkeeper in all of China. She cooks for you like you would expect growing up in an Asian household. The proximity of the place to your own secret 20km length of the Great Wall is the main selling point.
In my 4 days here, I went up the wall 3 times because the wall is just in the backyard of this inn. Pretty insane! I also met lovely people while staying there. Chances are, the people that are willing to come all the way out here to Gubeijou will also be very lovely to other guests. I cannot stress how willing I am to return to this inn for a quick getaway whenever life gets tough. For the rest of mankind, I'm pretty sure this place is classified as "nowhere". 3 hours out from Beijing and no public transport in the village might deter some. I, however, am in the military and this was the perfect holiday destination.
- Kate (10/5): Exceptional - The proximity to the wall especially as it was such a quiet stretch.
Homemade vegetarian meals.
The view from our bedroom window of the mountains and the wall.
- Samuel (10/5): Super Special Hostel Near The Wall - Great location - it’s along a super quiet section of the wall that hasn’t been restored. It’s also close to Jinshanling which is a tourist area that has been restored so you can experience both which is really cool. Super cosy atmosphere with home cooked meals available for dinner and breakfast. Host is very friendly and helpful with anything you need. I really enjoyed the walk that she recommended.
- Lucy (10/5): Amazing hostel - I would highly recommend! - I had a fantastic stay at the Great Wall Box House. The hostel was beautiful, clean and had everything I needed. The host was so helpful and friendly. The food was excellent - a delicious and healthy dinner as well as a great breakfast, which were perfect for before a long hike along the wall. I had a great night's sleep! There are lovely spaces to relax at the hostel and meet the other visitors, plus the cats are really cute :) Nothing - everything was great!
- Martín (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amy (8/5): Very good - I loved my stay here - very welcoming and helpful host, the rooms were clean, cosy and comfortable. The host cooked us a fantastic local dinner and it was a great way to see the less touristy sections of the wall (we had miles of it to ourselves). I would recommend liaising with the host about arrival as it is tricky to find (my Didi from Miyun struggled!). Highly recommend!
- Catharina (10/5): Exceptional - One of my favorite hostels ever, owner is super friendly and cooks amazing. Nothing, was absolutely amazing
- Briar (9/5): Superb -
- Branka (10/5): It was the best stay I had in China! - Everything! It’s the perfect place for the Jinshaling great wall exploration! The place is really nice, the owner is lovely and cooks amazing food.
- Sophie (10/5): Perfect location and Feng Shui - This hostel is a must for any stay in China! Not only is it a walkable distance from the less touristy part of the Great Wall but the owner is also super lovely and the rooms are clean, warm and cozy. Breakfast, lunch and dinner menu is also top quality. Thank you so much for a memorable stay!
- Lavielle (10/5): Amazing. - The person holding the place is very kind, considerate, the place is clean, comfortable, and well situated considering you will most likely come here for the Great Wall.
- Anonymous (10/5): Great place to be don’t miss it - Excellent Hostal, welcoming hospitality and very clean, highly recommended if you coming here it’s a good place to meet others and do the great wall together. If you staying more than a night there is the water town 10m taxi away and its Nice to visit too. Everything was perfect 👌🏻
- Quentin (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect. Good advices, a lot of help. And bedrooms / bathroom / living room were more than expected. I truly recomand for your next trip to the Great wall!! RAS
- Matthew (10/5): Would stay again in a heartbeat. - Everything. The vibe, comfort, location, cleanliness, owner, food. The best Loved everything
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional - Absolute best place to stay if you plan to visit the great wall!
There is no words to properly describe how good the experience is, everything was beyond my expectations, and even more when you consider the standart in China
Rooms are big and comfy, bathroom very clean with all you need (even the mirror fit a European size!), a very nice common room with couches and a table to meet all the guests
But more than that, you have a lovely host that will be there to help you and arrange everything for you, always with a smile! Everything is smooth and easy, make sure you try the dinner with everyone before leaving and don't forget to pet these cats! I could not stay long enough and thats bad
- Jonathan (9/5): Perfect base for hiking the Great Wall - Brilliant base to explore less busy sections of the Great Wall. The common areas are modern and comfortable and facilities excellent. If you stay, would highly recommend the evening meal prepared by the hostess - absolutely delicious.
- Gala (10/5): A Perfect Stay at The Great Wall Box House - Our stay at The Great Wall Box House was nothing short of amazing. My father and I traveled here so he could hike the Great Wall. The decor is charming, and welcoming, and the beds were wonderfully soft and comfortable. I especially appreciated the thoughtful touches, like the heated toilet seat, plush robes, and the cozy enclosed courtyard, which created a perfect space to relax and connect with fellow travelers over stories and travel tips.
The heart and soul of this hotel is undoubtedly the owner, Xiăo Wei, who seems to manage everything on her own. She is so kind and helpful. The hotel is very clean, and well kept, and she is an incredible chef! The moment I heard she was in the kitchen, I couldn't wait to try her dishes—and they did not disappoint. Every meal she prepared was delicious.
And then, of course, there are the cats! The three resident kitties are sweet, friendly, and always around to offer affection, making the experience even more special. Saying goodbye to The Great Wall Box House, Xiăo Wei, and those adorable cats was harder than I imagined. I’ll always remember this special experience and look forward to returning one day.
My father also wanted to leave a review:
“The intelligent cool headed lady that runs this place has created a great place to interact with other travelers doing the Gubeikou section of the Great Wall.
Everything was perfect and the food was delicious. She answered all the questions about access the hiking trail from there to the Great Wall.
I tried to wrestle my bag from away from her to carry out to the DiDi - I lost.”
- Piergiorgio (9/5): Recommend this place - The owner was helpful. Location very quiet but in the village, which is a historical village. Room, common area and bathrooms all good. Breakfast very nice. Lots of walking options around.
- Serafima (9/5): Superb - The stay was great, with a beautifully decorated room that added to the experience. However, reaching the hostel can be a bit tricky, but the host provided detailed instructions, making it manageable. The host also offers a map for trekking along the Great Wall, but I recommend contacting them in advance to check which sections are currently open. We initially planned to hike a certain part, but it turned out to be inaccessible due to damage, so it’s important to verify this beforehand.
The hostel offers delicious breakfasts and dinners for an extra fee, and the food was genuinely tasty—definitely worth trying. The bathrooms and toilets are available but located in a separate building. Although it’s not a long walk, you do have to go outside to reach them, which can be a bit inconvenient.
- Cattylethy (10/5): Exceptional - Loved our stay here! Lovely place, rooms, host and the food was amazing! Recommend eating dinner here as the spread was fantastic. Will 100% stay here again if I come back to the Great Wall!
- Matthew (10/5): Loved this place. Walking at Jinshanling or Samatai? My recommendation is to stay here. - Everything. Like a home away from home. So close to the Jinshanling East Gate. Amazing food. Accomodation around a beautiful enclosed courtyard.
- Julia (6/5): Cozy, but chaotic and expensive service - Small hostel located in a rural courtyard building; the target group are international (western) tourists, which reflects on the pricing of accomodation and food. Meals are taken in a cozy common room, sitting with fellow guests, which creates a nice atmosphere. Beds and shared bathrooms are good, rooms overall rather ordinary (not very soundproof). Check-in was rather complicated and overall the organisation seemed quite chaotic. To our surprise the host spoke hardly any English and information/tips for hiking the Great Wall were limited.
Compared to other places and for the pricepoint more care should be given to managment and food. We would probably choose another place next time.
- Daisy (9/5): Tranquil and comfortable guest house with everything you need and easy access to the Great Wall - The accommodation was very cosy with access to laundry, a lovely lounge area with coffee, bar and vegetarian meals, as well as darts, TV, and space to relax in the courtyard. The guest house is within walking distance of a small town, and a short drive to the Great Wall at Jinshanling. The wall can also be accessed at Simatai and you can visit Gubei Water Town (although it's quite touristy), and there is a third option to walk the non refurbished part of the wall. It's a great base for enjoying the countryside and a nicely designed guesthouse with privacy. We travelled with our 3 children and felt very comfortable and well cared for.
- Shelagh (10/5): What a perfectly wonderful place to stay after a long hike over the Great Wall! - If you are planning to hike the Jinshanling / Gubeikou portion of the Great Wall, this is a lovely lovely place to stay! The building itself is quite beautiful in an artsy traditional kind of way and the woman who runs it (I’m so sorry I didn’t get her name) is a wonderful person who exudes calm and tranquility - a vibe that runs throughout this hotel /hostel. It is a very clean, very comfortable hotel with a beautiful communal space for lounging and eating. We had the dinner that she cooked and it was the best meal I’ve had since arriving in China. The most amazing views of the Great Wall can be seen from the hotel and I would have loved to have stayed an extra few days. We hiked from Jinshanling to Gubeikou, but many people we met in the hostel were going the opposite way - either direction is fabulous, but for sure plan to stay here for at least one night! We loved everything! Nothing to dislike!
- Katsuyori (9/5): Superb - About 10-15 minutes to the entrance for the Great Wall. The hotel owner was helpful and had good travel information around the area. Breakfast was really tasty noodle. I should have taken her offer on dinner which she said was 60 yuan...
- Charlie (10/5): Exceptional - - Property has the best & sweetest cats we've ever come across travelling
- Host is delightful, and despite the language barrier willing to help and go out her way to ensure your stay is great
- Both dinner and breakfast were excellent
- We were upgraded to a private room with ensuite which was spacious, clean and comfortable
- Communal bathrooms and showers are excellent and clean
- Japanese style toilets with heated seats!
- Walking distance from Gubeikou great wall, ideal for hiking to Jinshanling
- Excellent value for money Nothing!
- Matt (10/5): Comfortable stay, close to the start of The Great Wall Hike - The property was clean and had good facilities like a lounge room for guests, and a bar. The host was so nice, she makes all the delicious dinners with fresh local produce (it’s all vegetarian). There was also lots of internationals staying here, so it was easy to share tips for the hike. Nothing.
- Hee (8/5): Very good - cozy, pleasant and clean water at the basin could not be controlled. always too hot
- Stefan (10/5): Exceptional - The location is extremely scenic, quiet and natural. If you come here you will probably want to make the hike along the great wall in direction of Jinshanlin. This is the perfect starting point where you can relax in the courtyard before your start. Everything was fine. It wasn't a luxurious stay, but perfect as a base for your hike.
- Thomas (10/5): Fantastic host, delicious food and 5 mins walk away from the start of a great wall hike - Fantastic host, delicious food and 5 mins walk away from the start of a great wall hike
