- Kateřina (10/5): - Skvělý personál a komunita lidí. Ranní jóga a společné aktivity pro hosty. Potkali jsme tu spoustu krásných a milých lidí.

Ansonsten alles top.

- Jelena (10/5): - Wonderful location outside of palomino, endless walks on lonely and clean beaches possible, staff is awesome, helpful, friendly and the vibe is super chill.
Food is very good and they can cater very well to vegetarians. Shared kitchen is rather small.
- Therese (10/5): Highlight of my Colombian trip - Peaceful hostal with direct access to beautiful and calm beaches. The staff and the volunteers are super nice and organize morning yoga and other activities which creates a great social vibe.
Don’t let you scare of the distance to Palomino, there are great moto taxis doing the trip in 5 min.
Definitely one of the best hostels I have stayed at in South America.
- Mats (10/5): A great place to relax and meet lovely people! - It is the most serene place you can find, with great people and nature!
- Omar Alonso (8/5): -
- Carlos Esteban (6/5): -
- Paula Alejandra (10/5): -
- Kieran (10/5): - A hostel with a very laid back, friendly, chilled vibe. The location is top class immersed in nature. It is it's own slice of Colombian paradise. Everyone working there was super friendly and they did all they could to make my stay as enjoyable as possible. Good music, good food and only a 5 minute moto taxi to Palomino
- Lucia (8/5): - The river and the basically private beach are beautiful and quiet. The gym space is big and there are lots of spots to relax. Our room was nice and clean. Volunteers and other hostel guests were friendly and group activities were run every day like pizza nights, movie nights or trips to waterfalls. The price to get a motorbike from town is now ~8,000 pp or a 15,000 tuk tuk so costs can add up quickly. Also on the Friday and Saturday night very loud heavy club music is played from 7:30-11pm which doesn’t suit the relaxing vibe of the place - no one was even in the bar area where the music plays from. Some of the hostel staff at the desk were unfriendly. Wifi is weak so cannot download music or videos - you can pay 10k per day for better wifi. Kitchen is very basic and missing things like plates, cutlery and pots with handles. No yoga was held on any of the three days we were there even though it was advertised.
- Caroline (8/5): -
- Mailys (10/5): - Tout ce qu'on attends d'une auberge bel environnement, propre, bonne nourriture personnel super
- Berta (10/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): Peaceful and quiet - Ample breakfast with optional extras, very pleasant to dip into the river on a hot day. Area for exercise and yoga.
- Guerra Arias (10/5): Excelente - Lo natural
- Adrien (10/5): -
- Michelle (8/5): - I loved the activities that the hostel planned for the guests, the staff was very great and very helpful for any questions or things that we needed. Price-quality of food.
- Denis Daniel (10/5): - Todooo Nada
- Nicole (9/5): We love it! - The location, the staff, the food, the vibe some mattresses are not comfortable at all. Also, some fans are not working good enough, and it can get hot at night
- Karen (10/5): I would stay longer if I could. - It’s in a perfect location. There’s a river right next to the hostel and everyone is so welcoming and friendly. The beach is a short walk from the hostel. You can float down the river, have the beach to yourself in the morning. There’s something magical about Jaba Jan. They have activities and it’s a great community. Everything was perfect.
- Lina (10/5): Great special place, wonderful vibe - Lovely place, great vibes, peaceful atmosphere Het comfort van de matrassen is suboptimaal. De matrassen zijn wat doorgezakt
- Ariel (10/5): Exceptional - Great place next to the nature of palomino. We went to the beach next to the river, was amazing.
Food was very tasty. Lots of places to chill. Warm staff. Having to take a moto to town.
- Reuben (10/5): Best hostel in palomino/colombia - Amazing location just outside of the town with its own access to a quiet river and a short walk to the beach , surrounded by wildlife.
Staff and volunteers all super friendly such a great atmosphere and set up we extended our stay by an extra 3 days wish we could've stayed for longer
Kitchen is available although the they have a set menu (burger chips ect) and a special menu that changes daily for a cheap price
Events every day
Social but not a party hostel
Great place to spend a few days or a few weeks
- Aleix (6/5): Overrated - The feeling of a welcoming community! The food was really tasty, and cheap! The location is calming and close to some beautiful nature, beaches, river and forest ! Often we didn’t have water and electricity. The place feels a bit forgotten, old dirty buildings. Our room had broken windows and a broken shower! The shared kitchen is also very dirty! The people in this place is amazing! And work really hard but the place on its own is ready for renovation :)
- Elsie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Catherine (8/5): Fantastic location next to the river / beach and very sociable and fun! - - great location right next to a river for swimming and a beach
- such a social vibe, I met so many great people
- great food options for lunch and dinner to buy for reasonable price
- fantastic activities including painting a mural, pizza making and a fire show
- you can rent a kayak to paddle into the nearby mangrove which I would 100% recommend
- wonderful volunteers and staff, all very welcoming and kind - the bathrooms and kitchen areas were quite dirty
- my bed was dented in the middle and the sheets appeared old
- the power went out both nights which was fine for the first time but the second time we didn’t have a fan running for the first half of the night
- Catherine (9/5): Fun, friendly and sociable hostel in nature - Super friendly staff and volunteers, lots of activities and events (perfect for solo travellers), beautiful location in nature (jungle, beach and river access) while being close to the fun of Palomino. Delicious reasonably priced food and shared meal times. I can see why people extend their stay! It’s rustic, which is to be expected for the price. But the social aspect, food and facilities on site make it excellent value for money. Perfect for international solo backpackers.
- Andre (6/5): Pleasant - The Personal was quiet nice. the food they cooked was good and had a fair price. The close by beaches are georgious. The hostel had a nice social vibe. This place is falling into places and rotting. The storage room in the shared kitchen was covered in mould, I didn't dare to turn the light on. And the kitchen was to small for the amount of people wanting to cook there and was always dirty. Everything else also was pretty run down.
- Hannah (9/5): Superb - The community vibe here is amazing. You pay for what you get but the staff here are all super nice, theres an event or session of some kind going on every day. Its totally chill. The beach is a 10min walk down a private path
- Neeley (7/5): No sleep by the San Salvador - Staff and community were awesome. The location is ok. It's right near the highway, so it's easy access. But you also hear the road noise. The beach is amazing. About a 20 min walk from the hostel. Good actives. Yoga was awesome. The beds were awful. No privacy curtains, sunken in foam pads for a mattress, and the bunk beds are very noisy and wobbly. Showers were sad. Not working in my room. There's a TV outside in the common area, so you have to listen to the TV instead of birds/animals at night.
- Leire (10/5): I'm repeating - A wonderful place to disconnect and connect with nature, yourself or others. River, jungle, wild beach. Activities and places for socialising. Staff and volunteers are kind and helpful. Good food. Very clean. I've seen people extend their stay!
Howling monkeys wake you up. You cross the jungle for 20 minutes to arrive to a wild beach. One hour walk on the beach to Palomino. Kayaks. Yoga.
A motorbike can take you to the village anytime for 6,000 pesos.
Breakfast included (7.30-9.30h). There's a daily menu for lunch (13.00-15.00h) and for dinner (19.00-21.00h) with vegetarian option (falafel 20.000 pesos), chicken or beef (25.000 pesos) or fried fish (35.000). Unlimited water refill for 5000 per day. :-)
- Karen (9/5): Great relaxed spot. - Great relaxed spot to chill for a bit. Near some beautiful quiet beaches. Friendly owner. It's a short moto ride from Palomino if you are wanting to be more in the village.
Bad weather can limit the options of what to do there.
- Gianluca (8/5): Very good - The staff Is friendly and helpful, the vibes very nice. Close to a small, isolated , beautiful beach. Nice food available. Maybe they should improve a bit the facilities (e.g. increase water pressure in the pipes, include a few chairs / tables in the private rooms, renovate and keep clean the common kitchen, etc.).
- Lewis (10/5): Great stay - Beautiful facilities away from the noise. Great for beach, yoga, music. 100% would recommend
- Teresa (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful secluded place with great community activities, good food & private beach/ river access! A little far away from palomino, so u gotta take a motor taxi & the Moskitos
- Cristofer (10/5): Exceptional -
- Scott (10/5): BOOK THIS PLACE - Great location. Super well run and friendly staff. Great kitchen providing breakfast lunch and dinner but without a doubt the best things about this hostel are the river and private beach. This place is super peaceful and fun you won’t want to leave The mosquitos
- Ellie (10/5): Exceptional - Loved this place so much we wished we could stay longer! Family meals and activities like salsa and a bonfire made for a lovely chilled social atmosphere. Staff were fab and had loads of advice, and we grateful for the expert spider removal :)
- Katja (10/5): Amazing Place where the River crosses die ocean!! -
- Máté (10/5): Simply the best! - It's hard to express how good is this place. You plan to go there for a few days and want to stay for months. The breakfast is different everyday, lunch and dinner are amazing and cheap. Has it's own private beach! If you are around please try this. It's just perfect. -
- Acacia (10/5): Relaxing hostel with great vibes in the jungle! - Such a relaxing hostel in a beautiful location. All the staff are incredible and the food is amazing with great vegetarian options. Beautiful beaches a short walk away, along with a river next door and surrounded by ju gle where you can see animals like howler monkeys! Other guests are always the nicest people as this hostel attracts a great vibe of travellers. Also really good value for money. Very easy to accidentally stay here for much longer than you planned!
- Grace (9/5): Great hostel in an incredible location. - The thing that makes this hostel so special is the location, right by the jungle where there was howler monkeys and leaf-cutter ants, on the river and not too far from your own private beach. The staff were friendly and helpful, especially the lady who cooked lunch, she was so lovely. Just loved my time here. If you like more rustic places, this may not be the hostel for you - the shower didn’t have a window and faced the main walk way to the beach, so everyone could see in. The rooms were hot, so it would have been good if each bed had a fan. Some of the volunteers weren’t that friendly. I also think the family dinners were expensive for the standard of food you were getting.
- Matteo (10/5): Exceptional - Easily the best hostel of my life so far
- Hatmi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jakob (10/5): Jaba Jan is an amazing place and an experience you will not forget :) - This hostel is one of the best hostels we have been on our travels! The atmosphere is so relaxed and you can have a great time there. We loved the activities like movie night or mangrove tour, parties or pizza night. The location is perfect with the river and the sea very close by. The room and facilities were cleaned every day and the chill space was really chill 😃 Every day there is food at fixed time frames and it makes people come together and it’s easy to make connections. The staff and volunteers are super nice and it was a pleasure to hang out with everyone. It makes sense that people stay here for more than a few days. There are a lot of mosquitoes and spiders, but you get used to it :)
The rooms get quite hot, but you can sleep with the door open cause it’s pretty quiet at night.
- Nicole (5/5): If your in your early 20‘s it’s a fine place in your 50‘s not so - Near the river and sea Hardly any water from shower or sink
- Kaan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Courtney (10/5): THIS is Colombia - Amazing place set in a jungle on the bed of the San Salvador river that leads straight to the ocean!
Incredible people, incredible food, and incredible vibes! Home away from home! Leaving :(
- Philippine (10/5): one of the best hostels i’ve been to in Colombia - the location, the people, the food, the vibe… everything is perfect :)
- Anna (10/5): Home from home - Honestly my favourite hostel I've stayed at in my 6 months of travelling.
The place is a bit run down, but the atmosphere completely makes up for it. A really relaxing and chilled out place, where its easy to socialise. They have activities each day, that are actually really nice e.g. fire on the beach, mangrove walk, pizza making night. A world away from the 'beer pong' type vibe you might get at some other hostels.
It seems to attract really nice people.
We loved not having to choose from a menu and had set dinners and lunch (veggie and meat options) each day, that were reasonably priced. Food was either great or good each day.
Good mosquito nets over the beds.
Clean (but basic) rooms.
Great locarion next to the river and a 15/20min walk to the beautiful beach. The sunset from the beach is something else 😍 The rooms were very hot! They have fans. But they still get very hot.
- Fabien (9/5): Quiet and peaceful place to chill - The staff is super friendly and helpful
They organise lots of activities during the week
They cook delicious meals
The private beach is super nice and quiet It’s a bit far from the center of Palomino, so be careful if you go to the center from Monday to Wednesday, the tuktuks and motorbikes are not running after more or less 10pm.
- Miriam (10/5): Exceptional - The Jaba Jan Hotel is located 15 min outside of Palomino (or 30 min walking down the beach) close to the river, and a quiet beach area after a 15 min walk through the beachy forest. You can get all your food there, take yoga classes, play volleyball, or - as most people - just take a break and relax in one of the hammocks.
- Rendon (8/5): Good social hostel but also gives you space to be in nature alone if you desire. - I enjoyed yoga and salsa class while I was there. I like that their meals were not a fixed menu . As a solo female traveler I appreciated that the hostel would call a moto 🏍️ to pick me up at the hostel so I didn’t have to stand on a lonely road to wait for one. The bus from Santa Marta also drops you off right at the entrance of the hostel conveniently. I enjoyed the type of travelers that come through. Loved the walk to the desembocadura del río San Salvador. Beautiful place with sounds of monkeys and eagles . The place could use some work the kitchen situation was not so pleasant. Beds were alright but really love the nets over them. Restroom could use some space to place your belongings while you brush your teeth or take a shower.
- Valentin (9/5): Great place -
- Isabella (10/5): Exceptional - I loved this hostel! I went with a group of friends and it was an amazing experience. The staff are sooo nice and food is so yummy!
- Godden (7/5): Was reccomend this place by a few people who raved about it but I really didn’t see the appeal unless you just want to s - great yoga teacher, fun to hire kayaks, lots of space Wasn’t very clean, nobody was helpful about helping us to organise activities such as tubing
- Peter (10/5): When a hostal becomes like a family - Amazing place, fabulous location. But most of all, totally extraordinary on a human level - the staff, the volunteers and, not in the least, the fellow travellers: the Jaba Jan family. A very warm gracias to everyone! It’s fairly basic, but that adds to the charm.
- Emilse (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bo (10/5): Great and chill - The vibes here were awesome. A whole bunch of travelers from around the world. Great people to connect to. Great beach, river, food and activities. I would highly recommend. That I couldn’t stay longer
- Lee (10/5): The coolest hostel ever - Everything was perfect! Such a relaxing hostel with a great vibe and incredible staff / volunteers There’s nothing to not like about it
- Paweł (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place, if I had more time I would spend there few weeks :)
- Kristine (5/5): Dirty and in poor repair. Don't trust the photos. - The staff were lovely, happy people who helped give a good atmosphere to the place. It's very easy to meet people and have conversations at the hostel because they have a communal table for meals where you can easily make new friends. The meals themselves were delicious and cheap, and we loved the fresh fruit juices that you could buy at any time. The hostel is located a 10-15 minute walk from a wonderful beach where the river and ocean come together. The main reason for my low rating was the facilities. I have stayed in many hostels in my life, but the facilities in this one rank it quite low on my list, despite the aforementioned pros.
The most frustrating was the water. The water kept turning off (we lost water completely three times in two days), and it took a while for it to come back once we notified the staff each time. When the water did work, the pressure was very poor and barely sufficient to shower off the sunscreen and bug spray of the day.
The light in our room didn't work properly. It would flicker, but only stayed on if you flipped the switch with a very specific technique and held it there for a few seconds. It took us a while to figure this out. We asked the hostel to take a look at it before we figured out the technique, but they never did. The electrical outlet near the bed didn't work at all.
Everything in the room and around the grounds was old, dirty, and breaking down. I kept looking at the pictures on Booking.com and other websites, trying to figure out how they were the same place that we were at. Chairs broke when people sat in them, the dirty hammocks smelled like stale body odor, the walls were stained, a kayak paddle was broken, and in general everything was in poor repair. Lots of biting sand flies all day and mosquitoes at night.
Our biggest reason for booking Jaba Jan was the proximity to the beach. The beach was the best that we found in the Palomino area, but it's also a 10-15 minute walk through the forest (not comfortable in sandals). The ocean part of the beach was small and the currents were too dangerous to swim in. The river part of the beach was lovely though, after making the long walk. While the hostel is located right on the river, no one swims there because it's shallow and not that pleasant. All the pictures are from the beach of the river 10-15 mins away.
- Laura (8/5): It is not luxurious but a great adventure and I will return! - Great party vibes. Easy to meet others. The natural setting was amazing. The dorms had no privacy and there were no laundry facilities.
- Alport (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely group of staff and also amazing breakfast Mosquitoes
- Emily (10/5): Great vibes, great people, lovely hostel. - Loved my stay in Jaba jan, it is incredibly good value for money with a delicious breakfast included. It has access to two of the nicer beaches I’ve seen on the north coast and a river you can float down to the beach. All staff are lovely and Deano is a really welcoming host and kind person. Couldn’t rate this hostel more highly! Thank you Slightly out of town however this was not an issue.
- Tereza (10/5): Great place where you will meet community of travellers and life enthusiasts. Surrounded by beautiful wild nature, you c - Nature, activities, community.
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional - My favourite hostel in 5 months of travelling! Very kind staff - super helpful, warm, friendly and welcoming. Great food, lovely common areas, beautiful private beaches. Best value for money - wish I could of stayed longer in this beautiful place. 100% recommend to everyone.
- Mara (10/5): Exceptional - such an incredible stay here and met the best people ever
- Muir (9/5): Superb - The staff here were incredible and so helpful, I booked for 3 nights and stayed 3 weeks! I loved that it wasn’t in the city, the private beach is nicer than the main beach in palomino, and the river was ideal for a cool down every day. The family dinner of 18k was always delicious and I loved the breakfast too! The hostel is eager to organize any tours you want and also provide cultural activities too (crocheting with ladies from an indigenous group, and a tour of the mangroves)
- Madison (10/5): Nice - Nice staff. Accommodating with food allergies. Nice beaches nearby, it's quite a hike because of the heat. Events for guests, quite social. They have a very basic kitchen, so don't expect much but it's nice they provide it. Showers are separated by wood slats with big gaps so you can see the person showering in the shower next to you. The dorm gets extremely hot at night even with all the fans going. The hammocks are nice but they should add more for the amount of people who stay there.
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jordan (10/5): Hidden gem and a special space - Incredibly welcoming and beautiful space. Free morning spanish lessons and incredible local tour of the surroundings with Kai a local indegignous legend. The hostel is a very inclusive and relaxed atmosphere.
Thanks Dean, Pedro and team for everything I'll be back when I'm in the North. Only had 1 night but managed to fit so much into that which is credit to what is offered here.
